:chinhands: i think what really separates hakuno from a traditional hero is that their love is directed towards all (like the world or the broad concept of "everyone") while hakuno's is a devoted love for an individual, it's more specific to the people in her life. this doesn't mean that hakuno doesn't care for others or that she's a bad person!! she truly is very good-natured and kindhearted person, just with a different set of values. she is an "outsider" that doesn't belong, a nobody in the world who has nothing. so it's only natural for her to latch on and prioritize any small connections she's made with a person over the grander scheme of things in the world. she herself says that she can't fight for a grand reason like the moon or the world, because her motivations has always been the people she treasured in front of her. the world is beautiful, she thinks it wonderful, but she's disconnected from it in a way, and any deeper feelings for it usually come by extension of a person. as in: this is the world x lives in / this is the world x wants to protect. it's always a specific person on the forefront of her mind and while she has a naturally kind personality that makes her care for others as well, that specific person definitely takes priority over anything else. it's not a bad thing per se, but damn does hakuno villainizes herself for it and outright calls herself selfish and evil for it when it's ?? not exactly the case.

tho i will say that it's Interesting(TM) because hakuno's selfless in the way that she devotes herself to a specific person to the point where it can arguably be considered selfish.... but that's a whole nother loaded topic! for this post, this is just why i headcanon her to like, or at least have some extent of admiration for, those that naturally fit into the concept of "heroes" and "allies of justice"; not going to want to be like them or put them on a pedestal, but she does have a special respect for them i'd imagine. to be more specific, that brand of heroes that value unity, fighting as a group against a common evil to protect the world; something she can't see in herself as someone who's only ever been fighting alone for her own sake and survival. it hurts just a little because the traits she find admirable in another person (e.g. kindness, self-sacrifice) are all traits she's fully capable of and have displayed time and time again, but she just can't see it in herself because her view of herself is soooo.... facking bad -vague hand gestures- :,)

though my personal hc differs though in the sense that....i also think giann kinda liked his job before he went missing. he didnt like how itd take too much time away from time he couldve spent with marius, he didnt like the very slimy environment of corporate backstabbing, but he liked heading Pax. he liked making it better than it already was.

i think this because:

1) i just think its neat!

2) austin has noted that giann is different from himself and from marius (said in a scene in marius' sweet chapter 4). he and marius tend to be more closed off, keep more of their cards close to their chest, are less trusting. meanwhile, giann was described by him as somebody more emotional and even naive.

and yet in spite of that, canon has showed us giann did a tremendous job heading Pax during his run and was wildly praised by the public for his leadership. so he was different. but different worked. he was dang good at whatever he was doing. i think giann's Difference in how he operates in the business world is a fitting change to the cycle of wariness and endless distrust that made austin and then marius The Way They Are because of the business world, itd mean a more open and transparent future for Pax

....and also because giann would wanna relieve marius of the role that hes been carrying for years

like i know that in a sense, giann taking pax back isnt as ~subversive~ as marius continuing to head it. but idk.....from what i know of giann—both his immense love and protectiveness over marius and his own objective success at being CEO—i would quite dislike it for him to go “bro… you’ve run it so well. better than i ever could… you should continue as the ceo…”

i see him more going like.... "bro....youve run it so well and im so proud of you. you ran it better than i ever could, and thats given me one hell of a standard to live up to. but you can rest now. thank you for helping me. now, it's my turn to help you."

and then marius goes for a phd in art history and becomes an art professor able to pursue his passions and teach it to likeminded individuals while also still moonlighting as "Z" because wouldnt that be such a fun secret identity for an art professor to have HAHA. THATS WHAT MY HEART WANTS!!!!

Frontiers wrap up

Finished the game last night and had time to simmer it for a bit

will still say its first impression so here goes

- Have to debate whether I like the 3rd or 2nd super sonic boss more, they’re both cool set pieces eitherway. I would said I liked how the 3rd ended more.

- 3rd song is the best tho W.

- I’ve been seeing some opinions of how they address Tails’ “inconsistent” behavior its honestly a double edge sword. I don’t like Forces’ direction but I do respect them trying to stick and just grow from it. Its kinda adds to the whole themeing of the game where the main core 3 are reflecting on themselves and what they want to do moving forward. I feel this aspect would be stronger if it this stick so I’m hoping for it.

- I think it also helps when Sonic is moviating Tails they used more a old and modern example (SA1 and Lost World) for his accomplistments so its using the more mixed stuff in a good way.

- Funny since Flynn was known for fixing the pre-reboot Archie direction and here Frontiers its bout refocusing characters to their more well liked portrayals.

- Actually curious since there been IDW mentions in this game meaning their trying to bridge canon between comics and games how its gonna be incorporate here on out.

- You can really tell their were running out of assets by last 2 islands when 4 th island basicially cutscene island. I will say I like the platforming challenge to reach the last towet as well as the buildup to Sonic’s corruption and how he keeps going despite it all. 

- The plot is simple but I do like how it’s show to us, looking back it cool seeing the visions Sonic gets after a titan are the Ancients piloting it u know?

- Frontiers has def been up there for Sonic portrayals for me. Bring back an aspect IDW focus on the least and how he inspires and encourages people around them. Mostly showcase of how Sage is slowly warming up to Sonic and understanding his way of thinking.

- Funny how this consider Eggman’s more interesting portrayals and its mostly through the egg memos. I think Sage brings a dynamic to him we never seen before and lowkey glad it seen they’re keeping Sage for the future. It would be a waste to use it for one game.

- Like I really like the shot at the end of Sonic being around with the friends he been trying to save the whole game and then pans to Eggman being allow and somewhat mourning for the her daughter is sort of accidently created its good stuff.

- But getting ahead of myself I do like how the 5th island been more on level of challenging the player every they know it just collect all the emeralds, its smaller to thank god consider Chaos’ size.

- The final boss.....I liked it bbbuuutt I can understand why some won’t (have some friends or fall on both the pro and con of it) the first half is a cool setup but I feel wasn’t scaled to the appropirate difficultly level as I cheesed it pretty easily. I was also playing Hard Mode so I got the “secret” and I ironicially I think its what saved it for me cause once you figured out the play style its a matter of timing and focus. I felt like I really earned that victory and final cutscene. That said if they wanted this in the end they should have introduced this mechanic sonner and more frequent as its only in 3 minigames. (the minigames were cute btw)

- I love the credit songs but mann why is Vandalize only play in the lower difficulties? The song too much of a banger to cut okay.

- But yea overal I enjoyed my experience with Frontiers, there alot of flaws I can poiint when playing (night challenges, wanting a mini map,some jank, they really need to upgrade the character models now) but overall this game just feels like a love letter to Sonic fans! Your gonna one thing to enjoy about this game and I hope SEGA learns the right lesson going forward.

Okay not to be tgcf on main again BUT I've rlly been thinking a lot abt he xuan post-canon and like... man. Yea what does he have left to live for? Like they established that He Xuan would never kill himself and he clings onto life so stubbornly bc it was denied from him since his very birth so it's very unlikely hed die but what abt his soul dispersing? Like the grudge is mostly fulfilled so what is tying him to the world still? Likely hes still not fulfilled his anger so theres that but also I think he xuan truly wants to help others.

I think back to the parade for the scholar He Sheng and how the people prayed to him to help them get back at ppl who had wronged them in life and I think He Xuan would be happy with that. Personally, I think a really cool thing that could happen post canon is He Xuan ascending as a ghost bc we know it can happen.

Like could you imagine He Xuan ascending after being a supreme ghost king for like 600 plus years?? That would be amazing. I imagine in his original fate he was probably going to ascend as a civil god or as the wind master since that's what sqx ascended as and their fates were switched. But!! Imagine the irony if he became the next water master. Truthfully I'd love for him to get that and also become a god of vengeance. Like having that be an auxiliary thing. Like how xie lian is a martial god but also the scrap god lmao. Id like to see He Xuan as the next water tyrant but with a completely new meaning. He rules over the seas and will aid u if you pray to him to complete your vengeance. As a lot of gods ascended for one thing but also became associated with another thing (like swd and wealth, and fx and fertility LOL). I think that would be so metal.

Now the question is honestly whether he'd accept it? Part of me thinks he would jump down like Hua Cheng did but part of me thinks he might actually accept it bc that's what was owed to him in the beginning. His original fate was to ascend as a god!! I also think its be very interesting if he ascended after helping sqx in the mortal realm as again, we know that he does keep tabs on her so she doesnt die. Imagine like shes in a perilous situation and he saves her and ascends like that. I think that would be rlly cool and maybe they could reconcile as friends again bc I rlly do think they had a friendship underneath it all. (Pls note I rlly mean friendship, beef///leaf is complicated and as it stands in Canon its deeply unhealthy)

unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own: idk, this is less rejecting canon n more just adding on, but taako’s school takes in kids who are typically deemed “bad” or “out of place” and teaches them more than just magic. there are cooking classes, self-defense, money management, shit like that. he lets kids stay there over the summer, especially if they don’t have anywhere to go.

first off anon bless u for being on my fandom blog that takes courage cause it’s a wicked hot mess over there lol and secondly to everyone else yes im about to spend an embarrassing amount of effort overanalyzing an anime man, no u shouldn’t apply this logic to diagnosing real people u don’t know or urself, no its not that deep but yes u can fuck right off if u wanna cry about me headcanoning ur favs with “shitty” illnesses. eat my dick.

But now down to the good shit! So I actually think bakugou has comorbid aspd/npd. But for this since u said u already see him as having npd I’ll just focus on the aspd criteria but im totally down to talk more about npd as well if u wanna. (the rest is under a cut because frankly mobile users would have drawn and quartered me otherwise)

So first im gonna go thru the dsm v criteria that are required for diagnosis that bakugou fits/exhibits (leaving out the few things that don’t pertain to him just for length and also because not every person has to fit every single criteria to qualify)

1. Significant impairments in personality as manifested by

a. identity (self esteem derived from power, pleasure, or personal gain), self direction (goal setting based on personal gratification, absence of prosocial standards and culturally normal ethical behavior)

katsukis entire sense of self is built upon his ability to “win” and to always be number one and come out on top. He absolutely cant stand to be viewed as less than that because if so, his entire sense of self begins to crumble. Part of the reason he’s so antagonistic towards Izuku in the early chapters is the fact that Izuku challenges that identity. He (unintentionally and intentionally) challenges katsuki and wont give way to him (which is the right thing to do, but we see how “well” katsuki handles that). He also doesn’t have a good sense of “prosocial standards.” katsuki has created his own internal sense of morals and values, he’s decided whats worth his time and effort based on his own opinions and not on what society deems worthwhile behavior. He’s constantly getting admonished that his attitude “isn’t that of a hero” because his values are different than the ones of the society around him. But he doesn’t care, as long as he “wins” then everythings good. And its not until he stops “winning” and his behavior begins to get in the way of his goals does he begin to realize that he has a problem.

b. impairments in interpersonal functioning as manifested by lack of empathy (lack of concern for feelings, needs, or suffering of others) and lack of intimacy (incapacity for mutually intimate relationships, use of dominance or intimidation to control others)

I could frankly write a whole essay about just this bit alone but I’ll try to condense my thoughts. So. Lets talk about katsukis lack of empathy. This boy wouldn’t know another person’s emotions if they walked up and punched him in the face. Which they do. On multiple occasions. But I digress. Katsuki is known for his shitty bedside manner, his lack of concern for the feelings of others is literally what cost him his provisional license, but aside from with Izuku (who we’ve established is a source of Baggage for katsuki and shouldn’t be counted among his normal behavior because at the start of the series they BOTH bring out the worst in one another and overcoming that is part of both of their character arcs and growth and a main theme of the damn story. Win and save. Save and win. Ahem. But again I digress) katsuki isn’t vindictive or cruel in an unnecessary way about other peoples emotions. He doesn’t use them against people, it just doesn’t occur to him that they exist. But as we see katsuki grow and begin to try and change his unhealthy behavior, we see that he’s not oblivious of others emotions in the same way todoroki is (who I headcanon as autistic along with izuku (who also has adhd), but that’s a whole nother post lol), he just doesn’t know what to do with them. He can handle things like kirishima feeling insecure, because he can logically talk to him about how strong he is to encourage and support him, but really struggles with more intimate and open forms of emotional support, like with Izuku.

He also struggles with forming prosocial bonds and friends. At the start of the series katsuki doesn’t have friends, he has lackeys he controls with intimidation and fear because he doesn’t know any other way to be. He has trust and intimacy issues and doesn’t like people getting too close to him because he feels displays of vulnerability are what makes someone weak (see those asocial morals and values we talked about earlier). After his time at UA, a few large helpings of some humble pie, and the diligent and hard work of a small group of fearless idiots (aka kaminari whose literally too prosocial for his own good and has zero self preservation instincts, and kirishima who has an endless supply of patience and understands empathy and other peoples emotions to a degree that’s baffling to me) he is able to start deconstructing that idea and realizing that u can be vulnerable and let people close to u and still be strong. That the mortifying ordeal of being known isn’t actually the worst things ever. Also that when confronted with people who aren’t actually afraid of him, he doesn’t know how else to deter them from getting close to him. The fact that none of the other kids in 1-A take katsukis shit and even go so far as to pick on him and mock him and call him out on his bullshit is a MAJOR turning point for his socialization skills.

2. pathological personality traits in the following catagories

a. antagonism, characterized by hostility (persistent and frequent angry feelings, anger or irritability in response to minor slights or insults, nasty mean vengeful behavior), callousness (lack of concern for the feelings and problems of others)

I mean. Do I even have to expand on this point? I feel like no

b. disinhibition, characterized by impulsivity (acting on the spur of the moment in response to immediate stimuli, acting without a plan or consideration for outcomes, difficulty establishing and following plans), risk taking (lack of concern for ones limitations and denial of the reality of personal danger, engaging in potentially risky and self-damaging activities without regard for consequences)

this is a criteria where u have to adjust for the world these characters are living in. but even then, by hero standards, katsuki is still impulsive. His teachers are constantly admonishing him in the early series for charging headfirst into a situation, loosing himself to his emotions and anger, and letting things get the better of him because hes not taking the time to properly assess the situation, this also bleeds into katsukis inability to work with others or ask for help. He charges headfirst into a situation by himself, blows up anything in his way, and then asks questions later. His teammates are often left totally in the dark to his plans, motives, or other moves and have to just play catch up to him the entire time. In the deku vs. kacchan 1 fight we see this behavior come out in full force. He has no plan, he blows up half the building with zero regard for their goals, and leaves iida completely in the dark. Momo pointing this all out and dragging him for filth during the recap is another wakeup moment for him, having to confront the realities of his impulsive and negative behavior whereas before he was only praised for it.

so if we take a look at even just that, which is still about ¾ of the diagnostic criteria, I think u can see where this really starts to explain his personality. Katsuki is hot headed, angry, impulsive, stubborn, selfish, he gets in his own way more often than not, he struggles with prosocial behavior, making friends, and relating emotionally to others. He has a hard time comforting people and usually does so in a blunt and logical way, he isn’t great at sympathy and being soft, kind, or gentle with other people. It takes a considerable amount of effort for him to realize where his world view and his morals and goals are warped and doing him more harm than good, and he absolutely cant stand to be vulnerable or honest about his feelings with others. 

All those things, imo, as someone with aspd & npd, are what make me feel like hes a good character representation of what the complexities of living with these disorders is like. Katsuki isn’t inherently a bad person, and as we see him grow and change, we see the ways in which hes becoming better, but its still hard for him. And despite what a lot of fandom thinks, if u look at the canon, the main person katsuki hurts with his behavior is himself. And I think that’s really important because people with aspd & npd are so often catagorized as abusive villians whose only goal in life is to hurt others. Whereas with katsuki we see where these things and this kind of thinking gets in the way of his goals and ultimately hurts him. and thats what I think makes him the most relatable and makes his growth all the much more satisfying. Katsuki is both fundamentally the same and an entirely different person from when we first meet him. his personality didn’t magically completely change, hes not just a tsundere whose suddenly all mushy feely and hyper empathetic, he’s just learning how to deal with his emotions and the world and getting better at being a healthy person.

idk if its been said before but i genuinely cant stand when people try to argue that archie was trying to do shit for the good of humanity. ive seen him portrayed that way and its like? what would give u that idea? absolutely nothing in either rse or oras ever suggests he wanted that lmao... he cares about the wellbeing of water pokemon immensely and that is his canonical driving force, he doesnt give a shit whether the damage from kyogre kills the entirety of humanity and he explicitly states it AND its his endgame anyway since he says that humanity are essentially ruining the world for pokemon. hes not heartless by any means and he loves his team to bits!! BUT he has a huge dream and he views the general public as an obstacle to it. hes a loveable character and really charismatic (moreso in oras id argue) who is super multilayered but his driving force has nothing to do with liking people at all lmao, even if it would be fitting to his personality to think that. i feel like it undermines his entire character to think that its the case? it may be the case for the grunts but if anything theyre mainly just ocean enthusiasts and jolly dumbasses who enjoy the kinship of team aqua and if anything i doubt they wouldve been told the deeper layer of the plan as even shelly tried to advise archie against going ahead with it after doing her research at the weather institute. she also says (oras)"cant you see that the world you dream of and the world that kyogre will create are two completely different places?!" to archie showing that he absolutely has not been honest to even her about his actual intentions, and they have a friendship that goes back yeeears. he's only told her the superficial truth of his plan not the bit thats like weelll-i-also-kinda-wanna-kill-everyone lmao.. BUT LIKE THIS ENTIRE THING brings on the question of WHY DOES HE SUDDENLY CHANGE HIS MIND SO QUICKLY WHEN IT COMES TO IT??? it makes absolutely no sense going along with his meticulous work to ensure his plan works and that nobody gets in the way of it AND on top of that he manages to pull it off (in sapphire/alpha sapphire canon). one minute hes basking in the glory of wahoo i did it boys and then the next hes begging to protag to fix everything?? i really doubt its because he suddenly realised people are actually worth saving cause that makes absolutely no sense. generations does a brilliant job in visually showing how destructive kyogre truly is for both people AND pokemon. i have 0 doubt that he realised as hoenn and its pokemon were being fucking ripped to shreds by kyogre that hed made a huge mistake. but not only this, im pretty sure he wouldve felt guilty as hell seeing how panicked his his admins and team were and wouldve felt guilty as all hell for lying to them and also manipulating them to help him achieve his dream. i think thats why when hes saying (oras) "save us... the world... and kyogre" to the protag hes truly referring to himself and his team (potentially the protag) when he says 'us', 'the world' being pokemon and the nature they live in and kyogre as in save it from its primal reverted state. SO YEA i absolutely refuse to believe he was ever doing it for humans, even after he changes his mind!! TLDR: archie never liked people and didnt even in the aftermath of kyogre stop portraying him like that i BEG

Overall: We Hunt the Flame is a rich Arabia inspired fantasy with characters that you easily fall for (like the two of us with Altair lmao). Personally, we wouldn’t classify the romance as an insta-love, it’s more of an insta-annoyance and gradual build up to feelings. The story keeps you on your toes and Hafsah does an amazing job at tying in different plot points together. Also, it’s got that amazing unlikely group of friends trope :’) SO if you haven’t already, check out this book we highly recommend it!

The Good: 

→ The Premise and Characters

Kae: So we start off with Zafira hunting in the Arz, a forest that is full of darkness. Once you go into the Arz, there is no coming out. But our girl Zafira is a baddie and she can travel the Arz without much trouble. She can always find her way out. She hunts in the Arz for her village because it is an icy, barren land and it is their main source of food. The thing is, Zafira is a woman so no one can ever find out she is the famed Hunter of the Arz, or she’ll probs get like, banished. But her two best friends, Yasmine and Deen, know her secret and keep it safe. Along with her sister and bedridden mother. Zafira has acquired this wonderful hunting skill from her father, who taught her everything she knew so she could fend for herself and well… Those skills came in hand because he got lost in the Arz one day, kind of went crazy, stumbled out, then tried to kill his family. So Zafira’s mother did what she had to do and killed him to save her daughters. She (Zafira’s mother) has been plagued by nightmares since. 

Geena: Kae outlined the premise of Zafira’s story really well! On the other hand we have Nasir, the crown prince of Arawiya and one of the most feared assassins across the caliphates. He’s also hated by literally everyone in his life… especially his dad. Nasir was raised (See: forced) into becoming the Sultan’s weapon, killing anyone that dared to oppose him. We find out that Nasir’s mom, the Sultana, died ~mysteriously~ when he was young and after that his dad went batshit crazy essentially. Nasir does everything as a means to get his dad’s love and approval (even though he likes to pretend that he’s just doing shit just because ‘i have no life so might as well kill’). Nasir ends up falling for some servant girl, who’s tongue the Sultan serves to him in a golden box. After that he is very angsty like, “I can’t love anyone :( ” Or so he thinks. 

Kae: Then we have our secondary characters. Like, the ‘friends we made a long the way’ characters who all def were trying to kill one another but it’s cool now ‘cause they love each other :) 

Geena: The magical artifact was the magic of friendship :’)

Kae: LMAO YES. So we have Kifah, she is from Pelusia and she is a badass legendary warrior who is fast as lightniiiing, WILL ABSOLUTELY kick your ass with a staff (she won’t hesitate, BITCH) and she’s also really pretty and tall and she brings her own snacks and seasoning. I can relate because I too, bring seasoning and snacks when I know they will be needed. Kifah is funny, sarcastic, and one of the few people that has a witty retort to Altair and his tomfoolery. She also has a thing for Altair. 

Altair, we love him! He’s a big buff boi with pretty eyes and a dazzling smile. He also makes a lot of dick jokes and is an absolute CHILD. But we love him for it and so does Kifah. They have the hots for each other.  My boi doesn’t have good aim and he killed his homie on accident but we’ll get to that later. He is the #1 general in Ghameq’s (Nasir’s father) army and is ordered to tag along with Nasir on this unintentional road to friendship. He is the sunshine in Nasir’s life and Nasir HATES IT BECAUSE HE’S AN EMO BOI. 

Geena: ALTAIR IS THE SUN TO NASIR’S MOON HONESTLY. ALSOO, we got our two best boys that unfortunately didn’t make it to the end :/ Deen, aka the boy that loved Zafira enough to go on an impossible quest with her and then die for her too. He’s Yasmine’s older brother and an absolute sweetheart who wears his emotions on his sleeve when around Zafira. In a way, he was Zafira’s first boyfriend who she didn’t love romantically. Deen proposes to her and she’s like *radio silence*. I DIED AT THAT KAE…. SHE WAS LIKE “NO COMMENT” 

Kae: RADIO SILENCE LMAOO SHE WAS. She pulled a, “okay but like the arz tho…”

Geena: But yea! Deen literally dies in the first few chapters because of Altair’s shit aim…. No one ever hand him another bow and arrow again plz. So like I’m thinking Hafsah made him super sweet the first few chapters just so we would be devastated when he died like 5 chapters later or something.

We also have our wise old Safin (essentially an immortal Elf but like cooler) Benyamin, who is centuries old and a book nerd (relatable). He and Kifah join Nasir, Altair, and Zafira later on in their quest, and he seems to know a lot more than he lets one. We learn that Benyamin is the living embodiment of that one meme “Baby jordans, never worn - for sale” bc of his baby that didn’t make it :/. He wants the whole crew to be like a little family so bad that he enforces the word “zumra” aka gang on them and overall he was sly but sweet nonetheless and he too…. Kicked the can… all for the zumra :’(  

→ The Ride or Die Relationships

Geena: One thing that Hafsah Faizal writes really well is the friendships between Zafira and the small crew that knows that she’s actually the Hunter that’s been keeping them fed for years. Zafira’s absolute best friend, Yasmine, supports Zafira in all her decisions EXCEPT for the decisions where Zafira parades as a man. Deen I suppose is the same as Yasmine, except he’s less snarky. It’s canon that Zafira would lay down her life for Yasmine, and not to sound like a weirdo but Zafira was wildly jealous when Yasmine got married to Misk... like “ugh now I have to share my bestie with a man??” only explanation is that Zafira is bi confirmed. Also, where we had Zafira ready to die for Yasmine, we also have Deen ready to die for Zafira (and he does...😭). IDK how Deen was hot, smart, sweet, and everything in between and he still died. Hafsah gave us the perfect man and was like “yeea FUCK that, the only love interest will be leech-scars sad boy.” ANYWAYS, The Zafira-Yasmine-Deen triangle is a whole “I would die for you” thing, whereas Yasmine is more of a “I would kill for you” and I think that’s beautiful :’) 

Kae: Alrighty, so we also have the relationship between Altair and Nasir. They aren’t as close as Zafira, Deen, and Yasmine. At all. But they kind of have this “if it were not for the laws of this land, I would kill you” thing between them and it’s hilarious. Nasir is constantly like, “I can and will kill you, you bastard brute of a man” and Altair is like “do it bitch, I dare you” and Nasir tears up and stomps away like a brat. But as this journey continues, Nasir gets a newfound respect for Altair because he soon learns Altair isn’t a dumb brute at all and is actually pretty bright. Did we mention they’re brothers? Yeah, that’s a thing. But Nasir doesn’t learn this until the end of the story. Did Altair know the whole time? Yes. Did he swear to their mother to protect him? That as heavily implied so also yes. SO now Nasir is like, “oh noooo, I wanted to kill my brother and was also ORDERED BY MY BITCHASS DADDY TO KILL HIM” then boom goes the dynamite and Nasir finds that he can be a good boi. ANYWAYS WE LOVE ALTAIR IN THIS HOUSE. 

Geena: OKAY SINCE KAE MENTIONED IT, AND THE WHOLE ALTAIR-NASIR THING. See since I have poor reading comprehension, I didn’t realize that Altair had promised to protect Nasir. SO THIS BRINGS ABOUT THE QUESTION of the servant girl, Kulsum, that Nasir realizes is working for Altair. The same girl that appeared around the time Nasir’s mom “died”, so does that mean Altair had sent her to help console his brother 👀 Does Altair feel partly responsible for the Sultan tearing out Kulsum’s tongue?? If so… both Altair and Nasir need mad therapy 

The Bad:   

→ The Sea Monster

Kae: So, this isn’t inherently bad and we honestly have nothing bad to say about the book, let’s get that straight. But we wanted to mention it because it was eh. So we have a sea monster scene when Altair and Nasir are on their way to the island. It’s from an old folktale they’d heard growing up, that sea monsters lurked in the sea. They end up running into a sea monster and it is blind and attacking their ship. It is following them by sound so they eventually realize they need to shut the hell up. But then there is our wonderful golden buff boy, Altair. He starts singing, taunting the sea monster and Nasir is like “BOY IF U DONT-” but then his singing kills it. Apparently, the monster hates music and song? So there’s that. It as a very quick scene and I kind of wish I was longer and more dangerous. I wanted some bloodshed! Maybe a sunken ship! But it was still okay. 

Geena: Kae said everything that had to be said about that scene. And I agree, it was cool to have a monster from the author’s folklore, but at the same time, it didn’t really add much to the story other than the fact that Altair knows how to sing (whether he can sing well is a different story).

The Ugly...Crying:

→ The Lion and The Sultan

Geena: This is going to be very cliche but the ugliest thing in this book was the Sultan, our main villain, who is later revealed to be controlled by the Lion aka some ancient ifrit-safin hybrid dude that was the cause of all of Arawiya’s problems. First off, we find out near the end that the Sultan is possessed by the Lion because Nasir’s mom had a big swig of dumbass juice and gave the Sultan a pendant from the place where the Lion was imprisoned. So, following his mother’s “Death” Nasir watches the Sultan’s descent into a sort of madness and suffers under his dad’s abuse. The Lion is also Nasir’s Mom’s Ex so you can imagine what kind of shitshow that was. The Lion is also coincidentally Altair’s dad, and I’m guessing the Lion was like “fuck them kids” because he wanted Nasir to murder Altair... his only son :/ ANYWAYS, the Lion is a terrible dad 0/10 should ever have kids. 

ALSOOO THIS BITCH WAS OUT HERE CONTROLLING ZAFIRA HALF HER LIFE??? And was instrumental in her dad’s death, since he’s the embodiment of dark magic -- which makes up the Arz (evil forest) -- we learn that the Lion coaxed Zafia’s dad into entering the forest and essentially turning him mad, which lead to her mom killing him. AND IN A WAY, he can control Zafira?? Or at least get into her head.

Kae: Geena said everything perfectly. The Lion is a skank bitch and we HATE HIM. But if we hate him, that means he was written really well so HELL YEAH HAFSAH. Now to the Sultan.  The Sultan, like Geena said, is possessed by the Lion. And upon learning that in the book, I kind of felt bad for him and Nasir. Nasir remembers when his father was kind and loved him. He has watched the decline of the Sultan and this drastic change from kind to 100% evil as fuuuck. The Sultan has no control over this and Nasir just wants to please his father to get that love back from him. He sees small flashes of the man the Sultan used to be, but they are very quick and sometimes he almost misses it. The real Sultan is stomped out by the Lion whenever he peeks through. 

Geena: Like can the sultan see the shit that the lion is doing? BRO THAT WOULD BE TORTURE! Oh my god, when they finally break the spell on him there are going to be so many tears between Nasir and his dad.  

Kae: YOO WHAT IF IT’S LIKE HE CAN SEE EVERYTHING OUT OF HIS OWN EYES BUT CAN’T CONTROL IT? DUDE NOW IM EXTRAAA SAD. 

Geena: What’s sadder than all that? THE FACT THAT OUR FAVOURITE HIMBO, ALTAIR, GOT LEFT BEHIND. At the height of the action as Nasir and the surviving zumra are escaping we find out that Altair never makes it to their escape ship…. Even though it was Altair’s powers that helped them escape. And then we find out that he’s stuck in the Lion’s lair…. Thinking that no one cared to look for him… scuse me while I weep…. Hafsah didn’t have to do him like that 😭 

Kae: OKAY MOOD. YOU SAID IT PERFECTLY. And like, she wrote that part so well. Because you know how sometimes the reader knows something the characters don’t? Like, NONE OF US, THE READER OR THE CHARACTERS realized Altair was left behind until Hafsah mentioned it. It was heart-shattering. And everyone is instantly like “shit shit shit shit we fucked UP. We have to go back.” But they can’t go back. So everyone in this feels horrible. Altair feels horrible because he thinks his friends (and beautiful warrior crush) have left him behind. Nasir feels horrible because he left his brother. And the rest of the zumra because they left their friend. Also, the reader, because we see how all this shit went down. It’s just a whole roller coaster of emotions and ALTAIR IS LOVELY AND WE WANT HIM BACK. But this also leaves potential for him to switch sides and join his evil father. It’s totally a possibility and we do NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO OUR FAVE. OUR HABIBI (because he calls Nasir that and Nasir, the brooding death prince hates that) HAS TO COME BACK SAFE AND UNHARMED... fin

Conclusion 

Geena: That concludes our review, we didn’t really touch on the romance and so on but it’s how you say… a slow burn? Also, we had so many thoughts about the characters because they’re all soo interesting and have their own stories that we LOVED. Hafsah did a great job at world-building and introducing her individual characters gradually, she didn’t just slap us with like six characters at once and call it a day. AND HER PLOT TWISTS??? POETIC CINEMA… As a self-proclaimed dunce, I did not see half of them coming, every single thing I thought would happen didn’t happen. For example, I thought that Benyamin was Altair’s dad at some point. Overall, this is a great Arabia inspired fantasy with engaging characters and a fast-paced plot that keeps you guessing what’ll happen next. I give it 9/10 (-1 for Altair’s suffering). 

Kae: Ngl I totally forgot about the romance. “It means nothing” GAH THE FOOL. BUT YES. I can’t believe we forgot the romance and their collar bone touching. Also the inevitable ‘omg I just caught you coming out of the bath and now I see your scars oooo’ and honestly tho mood because I wouldn’t avert my eyes either. ANYWAY, the world-building is beautifully written as were the characters. Geena is right. Everyone has their own stories and the time was taken out to tell each one. None of the characters were dumbed down and neither were their backstories. They all had their own personalities and interests and quirks. The fantasy, the magic, and the history was rich.  There was never a boring moment. I give it a 10/10 because I was super entertained and the slowburn was to die for. BUUUT. I’m still SICK that Deen was killed off five minutes into the adventure because I would’ve loved to see him giving Nasir the ~death glare~ whenever he looked at Zafira ASJDADKLJK. 

Geena: IM CRYING, YES I AGREE 100% Wish we had gotten that good ol’ Deen-Nasir beef.  

Kae: omg it would’ve been such a good beef because I feel like they would absolutely become friends at some point and HATE that they respect each other. WELP. THAT BE ALL, FOLKS. READ THIS BOOK CAUSE IT’S GOOD.

favorite thing about them

first of all: the fact that Green canonically has a rivals to best friends arc with Red fills me with so much joy and YES they are on their alolan honeymoon you cannot convince me otherwise

okay like. gen 1 Green just perfectly encompasses what it’s like to be a ten year old in a way? like ofc he’s written like a kid bc he is a kid, but i feel like the writing on him just feels so genuine as compared to some of the other 10 yr old rivals you get in other regions. even though he’s kinda a brat at the start, he kinda eases up a bit as you go along your journey and starts giving you progressively nicer/more praise-y end lines when you beat him (going from “i picked the wrong pokémon!” to “so, you are ready for boss rocket!”) but still retains this childlike rivalry and competitiveness and i love that about him

and like. fucking beating him at the Indigo League still completely breaks my heart because even after he did become the champion at age 10 the first thing that happens is you beat him and Prof Oak just yells at him for being bad at things and like. ow. 

this is why i headcanon that Red actually took awhile longer to get to Green like please. please give my boy a chance to be happy and proud

also Red was caught up with Team Rocket anyway so i imagine he must’ve fallen a little behind at some point? anyway

the development on him across regions is so choice!!! he’s so much more mellow and even kinda melancholic when you find him in gsc/hgss, like he’s calmed down over a few years and he obviously misses Red so much but like, it’s clear that Red is kinda the reason Green does settle down and he seems to have worked on his character and become a nicer person - and he still has that sassy flair to him! he’s just got that gradual slope from asshole rival to kinda aloof gym leader to friendly/sassy battle legend and aaaaa i love my boy so MUCH

also huge point: he’s so fucking driven??? he’s got the most drive and the most passion for battles/pokémon in general out of all the rivals i feel. he’s only closely matched by Silver, but Silver seems to be more aggressive than passionate, and somewhat out of necessity too (like, Giovanni abandoned him what was he to do), whereas Green just really like. he genuinely just cares so much about battles and about pokémon in general! he literally calls you in hgss and just rants about how many different kinds of pokémon there are in the world!!!

also in Alola he’s like???? just so sweet?????? he congratulates you and is like hey you’re really strong lets battle like!!!!!!!!! supportive boy!!!!! he has come so far over so many generations and i cry

also on Four Island when you play frlg he legitimately says “Be smelling ya!” when he leaves and how do you not love this idiot

i mean. while i get that you beat Green right after he becomes the champion in the kanto games i feel like there should’ve been more pomp and circumstance for him and i’ll never forgive gamefreak for giving this boy his dream, then making you rip it away from him, and then watching his own gramps yell at him for fucking up like. again it’s that drive, i get why Red keeps such good pace w Green but i just feel like he worked so hard and he deserved so much better than that

like they perfectly balance each other. Green has all this energy and all this spunk and Red is just like… so opposite of him y'know? he’s quiet and he’s more measured in his behavior i feel, he doesn’t really rush into things as much, and yet they both really just took Kanto by storm when they were kids, and i like how they have this foil dynamic and are both still so successful? they’re so different and they complement each other in that way, and they both find success in their own ways

like one of the reasons i hate that Green’s championship gets undersold so much is that he did beat you to the punch, and he has been one step ahead of you, and there’s so much passion there and it’s so loud - and yet you as Red are just as driven, you take down Team Rocket, you’re always right on his tail, so close but not quite there, you’re the only one who can keep up with him and you’re the only one he cares enough about to slow down for

while Red is still living on Mount Silver, Green is not coping well with having him so far away, and so Green massively overworks himself to the point that he keeps just not being in his gym sometimes bc he’s bouncing between the gym, training multiple teams, pokémon research, and ofc going to visit Red whenever he can. this leads him to be kinda temperamental after he’s been working on 2 hours of sleep a day for like a week until he just has an emotional meltdown and crashes, and then he gets right back into it because he has no self preservation

favorite thing about them

by now i guess you know im a sucker for character development, but i think they did a really good job with her!! i feel like her turn is a bit more in moments than it is with Green, who gradually evolves (lol) over the course of Kanto/all the gens overall. you see more discrete moments where Lillie starts to shift and gain confidence in herself and i am so proud of her ???? like the way she gets excited when she sees Olivia doin’ her z-move stuff, she starts buying her own clothes and getting ahead of you, etc etc

and like, she still has moments where she’s scared, there’s still some fundamental Lillie in there yknow? you don’t lose any of that softness that characterizes Lillie, she just like… she gets better, she develops without losing her Lillie vibe and i love that abt her. she overcomes a lot of the shit she had to deal with when she was stuck with Lusamine, she stands up to Lusamine eventually, and ghfdkjsg gah she’s a sweet gorl i love and appreciate her

also like. the writing on her backstory is so subtle in-universe. like yeah she literally looks like Lusamine’s daughter and you see her in the opening cutscene leaving Aether, but as the protagonist - like as Selene lets say, there’s little hints about where Lillie came from, and if you suspend your disbelief and put yourself in the pc’s shoes, there’s subtly to her character arc that i like 

also like. when she changes her outfit and starts being more protagonist-y, like more confident and kinda bubbly instead of shy??? love that shit it’s so cute can i have custody of this child pls

i like. sometimes feel like she’s too soft of a character for me to really get into? like i love her and Hau, they’re sweet good friends, but i tend to personally gravitate towards characters that create a little more tension (ie Green and N)

okay well so first leeeeettttts look at canon content, because i refuse to break canon; icewing society is shit - ultra-conformist, individuality despising, bitter, vengeful, and incredibly arrogant bullshit galore. Why is this? because the government (queens) have enforced this rigid awfulness for millenia. They dislike outsiders to the point of building a GIANT MURDER WALL to keep literally everyone out. they ADORE conformity and cant stand the idea of anything other than immaculate, emotionless, tactical warriors and diplomats. reminder again that all icewings are born into this toxic culture and it is a large part of why a lot of icewing characters respond the way they do (winter is biig proof for this idea). 

but look at this?? glacier isnt an asshole. ?????? how does this happen??? she was born and raised in this shitty toxic culture and even contributed to it as queen how come shes not an asshole in canon??

the answer is blaze, lads. 

okay, yea i know ur like “bitch tf, stop projecting ur got dam headcanons”, let me explain-

Glacier was a pretty standard queen, rlly calm and levelheaded, analytical, actually cares about the advancement of her tribe (strategical or moral, either interpretation works), and wary of any dragon other than a 1st circle icewing. yea, and then blaze came knocking, all sobbing and breaking tf down, offering literally half of her territory (sandwings already have arguably the largest territory, along with skywings) for a win in a war that had not even made the papers yet. and it would clearly be an easy win (icewings already had the cliff, so they could just wait for blister and burn to kill each one, and then the remaining dies trying to reach blaze in icewing territory, blaze wins without a scratch, glacier acquires a quarter of the continent for 0 work at all. duh, of course she accepts. Of course shes a little wary of working with other tribes, but for the betterment of her tribe, its a no brainer. 

so they become allies, yada yada, glaciers still a stone cold bitch of an icewing (tho definitely not so traditional and old-haggy to disregard the idea of some progress), and this is where blaze comes in. 

if you read my LAST long post, you’d get the idea that blaze is a clingy, needy dragon who has literally no one left to turn to, talk to, or even think about; so glacier becomes her idol. glaciers here to save blazes life, so shes grateful, and urges glacier to spend a lot of time together (out of her own loneliness), glacier obliges begrudgingly because she doesnt want to upset her ally, and because she wants to maintain a good image with her tribe and not be a stubborn bitch. 

Well guess what, theyre gay. just kidding (im not), they start getting really intrigued by the differences in culture. Sandwings have a very diverse and creative culture filled with music, art, and color, while icewings are much more structured, advanced, and impressive. Blaze is really intrigued by the caste system of the icewings, though isnt very fond of it; and glacier is very intrigued by all the arts and crafts the sandwings do, and what their purpose is (icewings only have that snowflake wall for art, and they all resent it, so shes pretty confused why people would dedicate their lives to something so “pointless”). 

so they dabble a little bit in each others culture, but glacier gets the bigger takeaway (mainly because blaze is admittedly not all that interested in the circles and stale traditions of the icewings); she gets all this information about individuality, creativity, and a kind of cultural acceptance for things that are perceived normally as “different”. She she starts questioning like everything, has an existential crisis, becomes a lesbian, decides she wants to be the best queen ever, and is ready to kick the worlds ass as the new and improved enlightened icewing queen. 

really shes a metaphor for change because she rose from the bigoted society, was a bigot by her past, but after being exposed to different ideas and cultures and people, she realized being a bigot sucks and stopped and decided she didnt like that the other icewings were bigots either (hence why she fucking hates winters parents). shes like a living example that change is good. i love her so much.

homer simpson? i don’t know how to feel about him. i know enough, but... he’s still fucked up bart with the physical abuse. he hasn’t fucked up NEARLY to the Family Man’s degree, but the constant choking of bart isn’t good. though... he does seem to be supporting of their hobbies. there’s actually an episode (link, BUT READ THE REST OF THIS PARAGRAPH BEFORE U WATCH SO U KNO THE WARNINGS) where bart gets sent to Hell School (like a literal school in hell) and... fits in there?? and does good on his grades?? and both homer and marge are very supportive of it, to the point where the ‘final test’ or whatever for bart is to.. torture homer, and he’s okay with it!! he wants bart to succeed enough that he’s willing to go through physical pain and literal torture by his own son’s hand just for that to happen!!!!!

homer’s a flawed man and has Definitely made some mistakes, but i think his intentions are noble and he Does wish the best for his kids. he actually has a shot of bart forgiving him, or even keeping him within his life once he becomes an adult. 5.5/10 (or 6.5/10 on good episodes)

jerry smith from rick and morty? uhhhhh... he’s... i guess he’s a dad. he’s not.. a Good dad.. but he’s not really a bad one either. he wants morty and summer to stay out of harm’s way, which is good, but... he’s kind of a pansy. the only time he really steps up to the bill is in the cronenberg universe, which means that it takes Very Severe Circumstances just for him to actually do something. he supports summer in her weird Floating Head Religion, he wants morty to get a proper education and stay out of trouble, and his worst qualities are that he’s Fucking Annoying and kinda selfish, though neither of these traits have really put the children in harm’s way.

good person? no. he’s kind of a failure/bum/dropout dad in every sense of the manner. but good dad? yea, i don’t think he’s done anything wrong. 8/10, or 7 cause maybe i’m forgetting something? anyway he’s pretty high up there concerning his kids.

nigel thornerry from the wild thornberries. good dad. kinda oblivious and ignorant, but he’s probably the best goddamn dad on here. 10/10. good dad.

paul blart from paul blart mall cop 2, specifically. i haven’t seen the first one, just the second. he’s.. a wreck. the whole movie is a wreck. he spends like half the movie trying to make his daughter give up her dream college, and he is a helicopter dad who doesn’t want her doing anything without him knowing Exactly What It Is. luckily, there’s no consistency in here, so these things get fixed. 4/10, you can tell they’re acting out the relation and not actually parent/child.

goku from dragon ball z? 0/10. -1/10. bad dad. bad man. is there a hate blog for him yet? fuck goku. i mean.. ok, for those of you who don’t know, it’s apparently heavily implied throughout the manga that he’s from that goku only fights people because he’s just.. REALLY INTO FIGHTING. he doesn’t give a good god damn about the earth or his friends or whatever, not beyond.. them being his friends. it’s a canon thing he doesn’t experience the feeling of “love”, and just accepted chichi’s proposal cause she’s pretty and asked first and also makes good food. he’s a pretty nice/chill dude, but... he’s not a good dad.

piccolo from dbz. ???????? 2/10. better than goku, but that’s not saying much. what the fuck stop throwing gohan at rocks.

vegeta from dbz. i dont remember how he is as a dad but i remember a comic of trunks giving him a cup that says “worlds okayest dad” and that’s canon as far as i’m concerned. okayest/10

professor utonium from ppg. i haven’t seen the reboot so don’t ask me about that, after the transphobic episode i don’t wanna hear it. from the OLD series, though?? he was a good dad. he was up there with nigel on Best Dads. 9/10 he gets a point off because he doesn’t know the extent of the girls’ powers nor does he seem to care to??? which is a big flaw to me. if my kids had magic powers, i’d go out of my goddamn way to see their limits so i can make enhancements for them. he’s a scientist who built them a giant robot why can’t he build other, minor shit for them too..

mr krabs from spongebob? fuck you. 4/10 because you’re higher than goku, peter, and piccolo, but you just pay off your daughter to not be annoying. what the fuck

mufasa from lion king. he’s... uh. 9/10. he tries, he’s a pretty good dad. he’s just not around that long?? but i mean. he died saving his kid. that’s pretty damn good dadding skills.

everyone from the Dad Dating Simulator gets a collective 8/10. they’re all pretty ok. amanda’s really cute, i cried a few times gazing upon her. please support her, she deserves it.

count dracula from hotel transylvania... 7/10. very sheltering, but he means well. at least.. in the first movie? i don’t think i watched the second one.

mr turner. 6/10. he gets pity points, timmy turner is like 50 and yet pretends to be like 10. mr turner has to be exhausted. he’s a good dad despite being stuck in literal parenting hell. as much as you love your kid, being stuck in the same year over and over with your son being Pretty Much The Most Selfish God Ever is... kinda awful.

What brushes do you use in fire alpaca??  i dont do much in firealpaca (esp not lately lol) but when i did use it a lot i just used the fill bucket and the standard/default brush to fill in gaps n such lol! i dont really draw in it, i used flash/adobe animate for the lineart and just fill in color in firealpaca :3

when did you start animating?   uhh when i was around 11 or 12 when i started digital art i guess? i just used photoshop for the longest time then got flash when i was like 15 or so

i really like your art style gosh darn!!! everythings so fluid and stylized and nice aaa (also ur animations are goals) do u have any tips for someone still developing their artstyle????  WAH TYSM!!!!! compile art you already like and incorporate aspects from their styles into yours, BUT dont limit urself to one style! if u like something then try it out! do straight up copies (as PRACTICE, DONT CLAIM IT as your own ofc) of stuff you like to see how they work and what you’re clicking with. spending time on fundamentals is MEGA helpful so keep going back to that too! USE REFERENCES!!! draw …from ur soul…what makes u ..FEEL good

 how do you make that burn effect on your lineart? it makes it your pieces look sharper and even more interesting, it’s super cool!!  when i used to use flash for lineart and firealpaca for coloring a lot, setting the lineart layer on BURN with the coloring layer seeping a lil past the lineart would get this effect automatically 

(like on the whiskers. u can see it gets a brighter brown(?) and the warmer yellow on the ears)

but since then i’ve been using sai+photoshop more so i just do it manually! i’ll use this funny pic of me and my cat as an example lol

^i select the lineart/everything i want the funky color around

^slam that INCREMENT button a couple times

^make a new layer under the lineart

^fill that puppo with ur preferred color! something brighter works best, or even straight up white

that’ll give you something like this

then i open it in photoshop

and i mess with the pink line layer’s blending mode..color burn usually does the trick but depending on the Look you’re going for, saturation, multiply and overlay have some similar effects that look cool. 

i also usually get rid of the outermost edge of pink line that’s visible around the lineart, just so it looks a little cleaner? to do that you just select around your lineart, increment/expand selection, and delete/erase in the selection of the pink line layer

uhh yeah! lmk if anyone needs clarification on this, i have some other #TIPS on makin ur art look crusty and funky so…lemme know if you’re interested :—3

What do you use to animate? And, a more specific question, how do you make transparent animated gifs? adobe animate 2017! (previously flash) i export my animation from flash as a png sequence then open it in photoshop, where the background will be transparent and save it as a gif from there nyaaa

 Hello!! Ur art is rlly pretty and so inspirational and nice to look at!! 💗💗 I was wonderin’ if ya had any tips on choosing shapes for characters? Like, when you draw shapes for a certain character, it looks rlly like it fits with the character’s personality n stuff!! ( e.g: Your Love Live! drawings!! The characters look so good in your style.) I’ve always admired how u did that n was hoping for some tips maybe?? Anyways, have a good day!!💛💖💟💜💝💞💖 HOOGA!! TYSM!!! and YEA you basically guessed it, i mainly just think about the character’s personality and translate that into a shape or Pheeling… 

especially for anime characters i look at the Very Subtle differences in the character’s original design..or possibly canon implications…for example kotori has slightly different eyes (it also says on her wiki page she has soft droopy eyes!) so i make sure to incorporate that Detãile

 anime wiki pages that have details like that is nice, for love live they have cute lil “charm points” which is really cool n helpful! listening to how a character is described in their world can give clues to what differentiates them which you can make more clear in your design

taking into account each characters context is good too, what they do/hobby/personality and how that could affect their appearance/posture/attitude

 YEAH its really fun to figure out certain characteristics and make it evident in their appearance! or. idk thats just what i do lol. hopefully this helps!
