so i read the official dark horse translation of trigun but even without having read the other translations out there i noticed A Lot of mistakes and problems but i cannot for the life of me find a working link to the ultimate overhaul translation due to it not being a secure connection and my browser not allowing me to open it and its so frustrating, theres parts i want to understand, theres parts i know are wrong, but god the official translation is so janky

I wanted to share a translation of an excerpt from this Hunter x Hunter Characters Book, published in 2001.

While I was dozing off in the morning, I hear Gon's voice inviting me to play with him. I’m embarrassed for some reason, so I hit him without thinking.

Another thing I want to note about this book is that it has a full story in it, which you can find translated here! It's an interesting read in general--it's based off episode 46 of the 1999 anime, which deviates from the manga and has its own original story, and this story then expands upon that original story. One thing I think is especially interesting is the story starts off with Gon and Killua sleeping in the same bed, so this book makes two separate mentions of that being something they do, which is cute. ❤️

While Togashi didn't write the story himself or likely the contents of this book, he did write an afterword to it, so I'm guessing he must have at the very least read it over and approved of the contents before it was published, and it's certainly possible he had more involvement than that as well. Take the canon status of it all with a grain of salt, I'd say it's more semi-canon/a different version of canon than 100% canon to the manga (similar to how I consider the 1999 anime additions/changes as well), but it's interesting nonetheless and fun as far as shipping fuel goes!

I post these here because hardly anyone goes to Tumblr lol.

Anyway, the book essentially contains information and images about the characters that are already present in the game. There’s a lot of behind the scenes content that was written. It’s all in Japanese, so I used Google translate to read it lol. The information was quite intriguing on how the characters were conceptualized, how the game was designed, and why some of the returning characters were chosen to be part of SF6.

Some interesting things:

- A.K.I. was going to be a charge character, but the nature of her moves proved to be too difficult, so they changed her to motion.

- One of the inspirations of creating JP was of villain Magnussen from the Sherlock series.

- Ed was a huge drive for creating Street Fighter 6. It is said that his character in SFV had a handsome aesthetic and is easy to use. He was popular amongst new players. And that was how World Tour was created—it was meant to draw in new audiences and players and to ease them into fighting games. Also SFV Ed was the predecessor for Modern controls, despite him becoming a totally different character playstyle-wise in SF6. And his SFV theme song was a big inspiration for the music in SF6 as the theme of this game is hip hop.

Have you read the rebirth Ultimania? If you did, was there something you considerd interesting?

Nope, as far as I know the rebirth Ultimania won't have an english release, or atleast not any time soon, so all I've read are unofficial translations, translations that paraphrase the meaning, and a few translations I've done myself to check if something was accurate. But that's only for small parts since Japanese isn't exactly my native tongue or anywhere close to it. If it turns out that there won't be an english version forthcoming I will probably buy a japanese version though since it would be good training. Problem is people aren't allowed to just post fully translated pages for the ultimania, they're pretty serious when it comes to copyright concerning that stuff. Nothing I've seen so far has really surprised me though, it's basically the same stuff Clotis have been saying all the time. The most interesting thing that has come out to me is that they were hesitant to add an affection mechanic to rebirth. This may seem like a pretty throw-away line but it's actually pretty meaningful. For one it really hammers in the idea that you're not supposed to see this story as a choose your own adventure, they want it to be a single coherent story. And if they were already hesitant to add it to this part, where I think it makes by far the most sense to have one in there, then it gives me hope that there won't be an affection mechanic in part 3. And lets be honest, who do you think has more to fear from there not being an affection mechanic? Us or the Cleriths? I think that in their hearts Cleriths are secretly begging for the existence of an affection mechanic, while Clotis are openly hoping that there won't be one, that really tells you everything. Something that has gotten a lot of attention are the quotes surrounding the dates, where Cleriths have been jumping for joy at the idea that the dates aren't canon, and trying to twist that in something good for Clerith. This has been both intriguing and hilarious to watch. For years Cleriths have rallied around the date in the OG, and prior to the ultimania releasing they've been desperately trying convince the world that the Clerith date is canon and the Tifa kiss is meaningless fan-service. And now that the Ultimania has confirmed they are all equal they're suddenly trying to use that to undermine anything to do with the date XD Meanwhile Clotis went "actually, I think none of them are probably canon, more informative 'what-ifs' that are meant to illustrate Clouds relationship with the different characters". And when the Ultimania said essentially exactly the same thing Cleriths actually took that as a good thing. It's amazing how they can twist anything to fit their narrative, or rather, to not totally disprove it. These people actually took a quote talking about how all dates are equal, and tried using it to prove the dates weren't equal. The most fun part of this entire debate is to watch how over the years it slowly changed from Cleriths trying to attack, to Cleriths desperately trying to defend and explain why "we're not quite dead yet, we might be able to still make a move." It's no longer "Clerith is canon, here is why", no, now its "well, no, the kiss is optional, you don't have to see it, he also held Aeriths hand you know!!!!" They've been checkmated a dozen times already and are now just illegally jumping their king around the board erratically, pretending that they haven't lost.

Hi hi hi everyone! I'm starting a new series discussing J-fashion sub cultures! If anything was incorrect or lost in translation, feel free to comment and tell me, so I can edit it ♡⸜(˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶)⸝♡

Moving on... Today we will be discussing Jirai kei!

Jirai kei is a relatively new fashion subcultre that popped up in the early 2020's that was based off/created in the area of Kabukicho. It has kind of an edgy look, usually paired with colours like black and pink (most common), or white and blue.

Now, where did the name Jirai Kei come from? In Japanese, 地雷 (jirai) is used as a slang term for describing something "dangerous" or "violent". 地雷 directly translates to landmine, henceforth the English name also being landmine girl. The reason why it is called jirai is that it is seen that the women/girls who participate in this sub culture are seen as violent, mentally unstable or manipulative. Jirai Onna (地雷女) is used as a derogatory term towards women. In the sub culture, the women who participate are Jirai Joshi (地雷女子) aka landmine women, and men, Jirai Dashi (地雷男子) aka landmine men.

Following on, the origins come from a Japanese Youtuber SuReRo who went viral in 2020 March, the term has since then gradually turned into a subculture. It is also said that the origins come from Toyoko kids. Toyoko kids are kids who are usually seen in Kabukicho who are "run away kids" aged 10-18.

Now onto the brighter topics, the style comes from other styles such as Japanese girly fashion and yami kawaii. Some of the style basics consist of, high-waisted skirts or shorts adorned with laces and frills usually in colour pallets like black and pink being the most common, white and blue, and occasionally red and black. Mary Janes are very popular considering that most shoes worn with jirai kei are platformers.

For the hair and makeup, the makeup consists of an exaggerated version of byojaku with a red or pink under eye blush. Usually their foundation is very pale, and the makeup exaggerates a tear bag or ageyo sal. For the hair, pigtails with black hair, highlights and bangs is very common in jirai kei but, there are many other hairstyles to try from in jirai kei!

Next off, the reason that this sub culture is seen in a derogatory way comes from some criticism/controversies, such as mental illness, self harm, drug usage, sex work, underage prostitution, and other topics. And unfortunately, it is not uncommon to see most followers of this community participate in these activities.

In the community, most people encourage hyper consumerism and trend cycling, which can be problematic for western people because of the high shipping fees of proxies.

(little comment from me) I think another damaging thing is that a lot of people in the sub culture over use filters and heavily edit their face, which can be VERY damaging to your self-esteem.

if livejournal posts were still real. this would be it.

i started learning japanese when i was 11 years old, around early summer 2000, from my aunt from okinawa. she would practice with me in the gazebo when she and my uncle would come to visit for family reunions in the midwest, and would continue to buy me tapes, movies, CDs to start learning the language.

my school district was one of the lowest in the country growing up. we had a prestigious japanese immersion charter school, and after a disastrous middle school year, i ended up applying and being accepted. grades four to twelve. each year we were in different (sometimes abandoned or condemned) buildings up until halfway through my freshman year. despite occupying abandoned churches and gymnasiums, we had the highest test scores, and most exclusive college acceptance rates in oregon. it was either that good or that bad. we all hated each other the way family hates each other.

i won my division three years running for the oregon japanese speech contest through my ninth grade year.

i moved to japan two days after my sixteenth birthday. the year and a half that followed was not easy. i had a host family for a period of time that constantly kicked me out, starved me, and found other families for me to live with. i had another family where the host dad tried to molest me twice by taking me to remote locations. when i became fluent, really fluent, around the 6 to 8 month mark (long after i passed the JLPT 3 at the time, which is now closer to JLPT 2), after months of isolating myself in the computers at class to speak english to abroad friends for an hour a day, i told my japanese school friends, and they were horrified. they stepped up in ways i never knew. it wasn't usual for someone to be so forthcoming, and yet they all recognized it as an extreme circumstance, invited me into their inner circle. my home room teachers took notice and would take me out for lunch. my host family situation was codename ONI BABA, and even another family that eventually took me in would refer to her as such, when i asked if i could borrow her koto for a public concert (yeah, the one instrument it turns out i'm a prodigy at is okoto. Played my first concert at a local Obon festival within a week of starting. Talk to me about how Hana Kage is a fucking bitch. this version of 回転木馬 was what i was performing after a year. if you can find my old livejournal account, i guarantee there is a really terrible version recorded on my motorola razr still live).

by the time i was seventeen i was allowed to be on payroll to act as a translator for a month-long "jan-term" project with my mom in japan, where we took about 13 students across the main land. back at my american school i was writing all my essays in japanese, in the style i had been taught in japan (it was WILD to relearn how to rewrite english essays when living abroad-- that shit does NOT translate sometimes).

i went to college. i was immediately accepted into the higher ed programs my school provided. they were working toward offering a major, but only had a minor present. i signed on for level 300 with 8 other students.

the professor hated me. that is the nicest word for it. she would have typos on her quizzes. she would make fun of my hokkaido accent. but the worst part was when i was sexually assaulted by one of the other 8 students in the class, went to her during office hours to request that she not pair me with that student out of fear, and then she proceeded to exclusively pair me with that student on projects.

i was also learning i had a learning disability, but the student union health center refused to directly prescribe me medication for my disability, or refer my outwards--what happened instead was i was put on a prescription that had not been recommended outside of extreme epilepsy (carbamezapine), and when i expressed my fear that it was resurfacing suicidal tendencies, the doctor in charge doubled the dosage and encourage me to kill myself.

it was an ordeal. it was an ordeal that i documented. it was an ordeal that by spring 2008, i was accused of cheating on a test i got less than 30% on because i was so fucking out of it by a woman who would only partner me with a man who had sexually abused me. and when i confronted her about it on tape, with a medical transcript of what i had endured for the past year, i have a recording of her saying, "I don't need a piece of paper to tell me that you have problems."

Anyway, she went on sabbatical to adopt a kid the next year. Idiot sex pest remained in my classes, but god, he really sucked. I had to leave through most of my 400-level classes because I was working a lot. Most of my classes were essentially unpaid labor where we were translating books and providing subtitles for movies that were ready for American distribution. Half of my classmates my second year were born in Japan and spoke Japanese better than English but were able to cop out a foreign language credit, and they were honestly my favorite friends in the class, even if that's a steep fucking grading curve. Asshole teacher appeared once my spring semester, but knowing she took the year off, I actually completed my minor degree my sophomore year in early 2009.

And then I never really spoke Japanese again.

And it's hard. Whenever I'm introduced to media, I'm like, god, I forgot that. I remember that. I knew that, once upon a time. I remember conversations in English that weren't in English. And I remember when I was in my senior year of High School, I would be speaking Japanese and forget that I was speaking Japanese, that sometimes no one else except my teacher or friend who were equally fluent understood too. I miss that feeling. I feel shame, sometimes, at letting it go. I know I still have the pronunciation and local dialect, but it's hard to be reminded of how much I forgot.

When I started learning first, very close to when I was still fluent, Indonesian, and more recently, French, my backup language in my head has always been Japanese instead of English. My wife used to tell me I had a Japanese accent when I would try to speak French (fun fact: one of my friends in Japan was learning French and spoke zero English, and only then did I understand the horror of French phonetics), and it took me literally over a month of quietly practicing my R's in my car when I would get home from work for her to be like, oh you sound like a regular Anglo (read: white boy trying so hard and yet).

Whenever I get back into the mindset of becoming fluent in French (mandatory!), and restart the journey from where I left off these past years, I ache something fierce and weird for my Japanese. It is, surface level, a sense of failure. I couldn't hold onto you, I wouldn't have known how to try. There were obstacles. There were so many bad memories. And yet, sometimes I will be in bed with my wife, and she will be watching a Japanese show, and I will be like, "Did he really say that?" and she will say, "Oh God, I forgot that you knew Japanese."

Some things are bone deep and will probably never go away. I guess I'm still in mourning for the language that I lost as I continue to learn a new language. I want to be better, I know I can be better this time! And yet, I'm afraid that every step forward, I'll lose what I have of my second language identity. I have already lost so much.

Can I ask how you learned Japanese? I'm curious about learning it myself but have no clue where to start.

Disclaimer:

I'm self taught (only have one basic class in Japanese) and never took JLPT. I can talk, write and understand basic japanese, but definitely not proficient. Because I only apply my jp knowledge for hobby stuffs (a.k.a i can read a novel about oshi and have conversations with fellow otaku. but none of it is applicable in regular daily life)

I started since 2014 so I've been learning jp for almost 9 years (still am). I dont think I'm qualified to give advice so instead, here's a short essay on how I got to this point;

2014: learnt reading & listening from manga & anime. reading raws while comparing to fan scanlations. same with anime. doing this consistently to get used to the language 2018: peak of my learning -took a basic class in japanese in college. helped a lot in getting used to sentence structure and particles -started translating seriously (short written text only: interviews, tweets, articles) -practice writing and conversing via twitter. started tweeting in japanese and talked to japanese people in same fandom. found kaiwa friends. -also started translating spoken japanese (livestreams), but was not confident enough to translate word-by-word 2019- jan 2021: started translating mobage contents. literally just doing the same things as the year before but more frequently and more quantity. also started translating short spoken japanese without any text/script aid (radio). feb 2021: discovered high&low. met todoroki yosuke. trajectory of life changed. stopped translating for the time being 2022: slowly translating media with real people starting with some kamen rider stuffs. got more comfortable with translating spoken japanese (unscripted). 2023: here i am.

The earliest I started learning japanese was around ~2014 where I was into a very niche series that has no translation so I had to buy the manga and try to read them myself. At the time there's no translate using image function, so a lot of it was me typing in the words in hiragana and hoping that I find the right kanji. During this period I (was forced to) learn a lot about kanji radicals and how to properly write them.

From that day on, Jisho was my best friend

I learnt mostly by comparing anime/manga fan translations with raws and going back and forth to check the words in dictionary. I prefer fan scanlation bc most of them are literal and are easier to understand as someone who isn't an english speaker.

I still consciously do this whenever I watch anything but I can differentiate what's a literal translation vs localisation now.

I started dabbling in translation around 2018

At the time I was into Hypnosis Mic (rap songs). I was better at understanding jp words now and could write simple words. I would tweet in japanese and reply to my fav artists drawings (this template is my origin). I also started posting my drawings with jp caption

I used to help around the fan translation group with seiyuu interviews or magazine articles (mainly written text). And the admin of the group would check my translation before posting them. I tried translating songs myself, but I realised that while I could translate, they don't make sense 😅😅

I made some friends in the fandom who were also learning japanese and we would consult each other with translations. I also made a friend with a japanese person wanting to learn english. So I would talk to them in japanese while they would reply to me in english.

So I stuck around with translating short interviews/tweets. I also started doing livetweets of niconico livestreams. I wasn't confident enough in spoken japanese so I only made general summaries instead of word-by-word translation.

At the same year I also took an introductory class to Japanese Language at my college. It was my first formal lesson in japanese. The book we used was Minna no Nihongo Elementary 1. The class got me used to sentence structures, particles, numbers, time etc etc. The class did not made me translate my anime stuffs better back then but the present me is very thankful for everything I learnt during this class bc it's what people in the real world use.

The next following years (2019- early 2021) were when i was most active bc I got into translating mobage contents. I translated pretty much everything I could from home screen lines to event stories to radio. I got better at making my translation sound better and not too literal. Also helped proof reading friends translations.

I personally think this was the best learning duration for me. Compared to actors, seiyuu (voice actors) have really clear enunciation which helped me got confident in my listening skills for spoken japanese, thus became confident enough to translate it. I could understand and catch up with what they were talking about with minimal text. But I still need to listen to the same radio show 2-3 times before I could fully understand them.

I dedicated every waking minute of my life to this game until it shut down. Then I got so broken hearted, I didn't want to consume anymore 2D media. Depressi spaghetti phase.

On that fated day in February 2021, I watched High&Low on netflix and I fell for Todoroki Yosuke. Started the process all over again by consuming everything i can about highlow to get used to the actors voices, way of speaking, dialect, common words/phrases etc. Also includes stuffs related to exile tribe. During this time I barely translated anything bc I wasn't confident enough with unscripted spoken japanese.

By 2022 I got the hang of it and started translating stuffs for kamen rider. And this year I can listen to fanta's radio while doing chores without thinking too much about it but can still understand their conversation! I read a novel for the first time!

Hello !! If I may ask, how did you get a hold of the Animate Label Fair extra, and all of the other extras ? Have you bought several copies of Sleeping Dead from several shops to get all these or ?

Also, when you say MTL translation, you mean machine/AI translation, isn't it ? Do you or not speak Japanese ? 👀 (My apologies if this is too nosy, I'm obsessed with Sleeping Dead since reading it and you certainly have the most posts in the tag ... and it sound like you got digital copies of the Sleeping Dead book and has read it even as the scanlation, to my understanding, is still on going ?)

(I'm French and we've been blessed with an official translation and release here, so that's how I've already read the entirety of it myself~)

First off I am very envious France got an official translation so quickly 😁. English publishers are lagging so badly, I have no idea if we’d just get a digital release or anything at all!

I was able to get the animate label fair extra on Yahoo Auction Japan with a shopping service. I wound up buying the first volume twice - when it first came out, and another copy with the second volume. The extras for v1 were reprinted when the second volume came out, so I pre-ordered them together. There are two more extras from v2 that were pre-order exclusive, but they don’t appear very often on secondhand sites:

I used the website/app Honto to buy the digital version. The group translating has rips but I only found a download for volume 1 so far.

As for the translations, I use AI/machine translation with an online dictionary. I was able to take Japanese for a year in college, so I can read hiragana and katakana with some understanding of sentence structure. I went back and fixed a few scans that were from before I took the classes because there were a lot of mistakes. I’m nowhere near fluent, so I would take anything I post as a translation with some skepticism.

Elliott's big adventure in Japan, day 2 - short(ish) version because I am drunk and tired 🍶✨️

👺Went to the kabuki theatre!!!!!! We saw two plays, a humorous one and a traditional epic dance one, with a super nice guide (thank you Kazui-san! and thanks again for the recommendation Shin!) The theater was so pretty! We even bought a bento box to eat during intermission! (if you've followed me for a while, you know how much I like kabuki, and I was really looking forward to this!)

🍵Drank proper matcha with a wagashi pastry!! In a very beautiful posh teahouse next to a rooftop Japanese garden. It was raining, it was so so pretty. The tea was slightly bitter and very tasty.

👘Went to the theatre wearing yukatas; a nice staff lady at the theatre fixed our obi belt knots and she was impressed when we said we made the knots ourselves XD

⛩️Went to a very nice shintô shrine and received my first omamori charm! (for shrine and temple items, it is polite to say "receive" rather than "purchase"or "buy")

🎏Also first gachapon!! It's the kabuki theatre's little cat mascot, that has the colors of the traditional kabuki curtain (red black and green)

🗼Tokyo Tower!! You know, the Japanese knockoff Eiffel tower. I ate some tokayaki at a nearby food stall and burned my tongue like every time I eat takoyaki.

🏯Another Buddhist temple, we entered from the back so I thought it was small but NOOOOOO it was fucking GIGANTIC and had ROWS upon ROWS of Jiso statues (Buddhist deity dedicated to protecting young children, they are super cute and have little red aprons and winter hats and wind mills)

👹Went to another Buddhist temple for Bon Odori! It is a celebration for the dead. Lots and lots of people were wearing yukatas and dancing in a circle around a stage with fun music, and tons of tiny food stalls (I bought a whole-ass fish on a skewer), and I ordered food by myself !!! (and I was so happy I completed the transaction in pseudo-Japanese that I fucking forgot to take the food. Watashi wa baka desu). And I complimented a lady on her cute kimono and hairdye all by myself! ("Excuse me... Kimono pretty! Sorry I don't speak Japanese. -points at hair- pretty! Thank you very much! Goodbye!" -runs away-)

🤗We sat at a table and Aime struck up a conversation with some locals and they even bought us a drink, and Aime was so so nice and translated things to French so I could follow the conversation and chime in too. Japanese people are super nice when they find tourists that speak Japanese ❤️

Oh no~ Oh no~! Something REALLY messed up happened today! Right, so, to explain the situation I’m going to need to give a little backstory first: Yesterday I had a super lucky morning and I won BIG at the races for the first time in forever! I was loaded! But I knew if I went home with that much cash my brothers would find out and take it away. Geez, normally they don’t even pay attention to me, but the second I get some money suddenly it’s all eyes on niisan. I decided to just spend it all as fast as I could before I went back to the house, and what better to buy than beer? So I got myself a drink, and then I got myself another, and another, another. I drank so much I could barely stand up, but I still had tons of money left over! I stumbled out of the bar, unsteady on my feet, and somehow ended up in an adult bookstore. I started grabbing every erotic book I could get my hands on. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but looking back I feel so embarrassed about it. God, what a waste of money, my parents should be ashamed of me. I ended up with a lot of really weird stuff like “In the MILF of Madness”, “Hey Diddle Dildo”, “Less than Moral Nuns”, “Junk in the Box”, “Furry in a Hurry”, “Naughty Stewardesses Quarterly review”, “Banging in the Rain”, and “Step on Me Mommy Monthly”* just to name of a few of the gross things I got. I want to make it clear that I wasn’t actually going to USE any of that nasty stuff! Really! I swear! I was just buying whatever I could in a drunken panic! Seriously! After buying the books I had finally used up all my money so I went home. I hid the porn in various places all over the house and then I passed out. The next day…. It was gone. One of the erotic books. A really, REALLY perverted one! Something so dirty I don’t even want to write down the title or even what genre it was! One of my brothers must have taken it! I thought the six of us knew each other better than anyone, but I was wrong. I really don’t know anything about my brothers, and I don’t think I WANT to know! I really don’t want to know who took it. Just thinking about it freaks me out. I don’t want to know. I just don’t want to know.

Translator’s notes: *In the original Japanese version of the text Osomatsu doesn’t give specific titles of the porno books he bought, he just says they’re things he’s normally not into (the only genres he directly name drops are “Mature women” and “concept books”) I thought it might be funnier though if I came up with some goofy titles for sexy books, “In The MILF of Madness” is my personal favorite of the bunch. Man, Osomatsu sure is being judgmental about that porn book, huh? If you ask me a guy who blows all his gambling earnings on booze and erotica doesn’t really have a leg to stand on when it comes to critiquing matters of morality, but whatever. JJK really want to make me learn Japanese just so I can appreciate it in its full glory. Reading discussions on the translation made me realize just how much subtext is lost.

oh mai gah anon! 100%. For me, seriously, the way the translation treats Sukuna? It makes me want to cry how they've robbed his character of that King-like speech he uses. Zero nuance!

And the way Gege uses kanji is just absolute linguistic genius. As a language nerd I absolutely love it.

I wish I had a better grasp of Japanese myself, but translating even a sentence would take me a while if it has complex grammar. I kind of stopped my studies at the "if" grammar pattern and then covid hit and I just never got back to it.

I'd encourage you to pick up the language if you're up for it. I feel like reading a manga you love is a good place to start picking up vocabulary and simple grammar patterns. I actually thought of buying the Japanese volumes along with the English volumes so I could use the Japanese version to study Japanese.

GO! JLPT N1 Grammar(Translated from Shin Kanzen Master i hate the renaming sm)

They are translated into Thai.

If you want to improve your Japanese understanding, people might recommend buying the Japanese version when you are at an intermediate level. But personally, I can completely understand it better when it's explained in my mother tongue, hence the reason why I bought them (plus I'm broke)

I bought them 2 months ago!

I start with TRY! and Sou Matome by reading the vocabs first from Sou Matome, then move on to TRY! doing their exercise as much as my brain can handle, usually not over a chapter.

Here's what my notebook looks like

As you can see, nothing fancy– just a pencil and a sticky note. I write words I don't or barely understand at the top of every page. As for the sticky note, it's for the words from the seventh day of Sou Matome that I can't remember their meanings. You might notice I didn't write their meanings. It's because I want to challenge myself to recall their meanings without relying on written translations.

I also READ the TRY! book in advance, so I'm always ahead of my actual exercise. Why you may ask? It came from when I read the N4 book. I always carried it everywhere because reading it was fun! So I'm trying to keep up this habit (despite taking more effort than before). When I read sample sentences, I try to translate them into Thai by myself before looking at the translations, because I want to practice my interpretation/translation skills too! (It'll definitely be useful in the future).

After finishing TRY! I will start reading GO! JLPT. Hopefully, I can finish this before the exam date.

OH! One thing I forgot to mention, I haven't done the listening exercises in TRY!. The reason is simple, it's a bit of a hassle to use a DVD player so I want to do them altogether when I am done reading GO! JLPT. I use Kanji Study (Play Store only) for studying Kanji. Right now, I'm studying secondary 3's kanjis. Believe it or not, it has been a year since I started learning secondary 3 and never managed to make progress.

Future Plans

There can be a rare case where I finish these books earlier than I expect so here's what I should do (by that, I mean you definitely should because god those books don't cover the skill adequately)

日本語能力試験　対策問題＆必点整理　読解 Ｎ1 This book is incredible imo, because it explains the answers to every question which made me thoroughly understand it when I was studying for N2

Shin Kanzen Master 聴解 Ｎ1

These will be the books I borrow from my university's library. They are in Japanese too that's why I love borrowing from here! I think the CD resource can be found online because that's what I did for N2.

Lastly, if there is still time I'll take a mock exam from the official JLPT handbook.

My Favorite 3DS Downloads Before the eShop Closes

If you follow Nintendo news, you've most likely already heard that the 3DS and WiiU eShops will be closing by the end of March 2023, and if you're anything like me, you're making a list of games to buy before the eShop goes out of business. Sadly, a lot of great exclusive games (and a truckload of shovel-ware) will be lost forever. Here's some downloadable games I've bought before they're never available on the console again!

5: 3D Sonic the Hedgehog / 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ($6 each) Sonic the Hedgehog is a classic; no one can deny this. While many people look at the original 16-bit games with love and adoration, many also look at it with a critical lens. It's true that the first three games & Knuckles haven't aged entirely gracefully, but they're still amazing games, and the Sega 3D series is here to help you relive them in all their glory! Developed by M3, these games are native 3DS ports of Sonic 1 and 2 from the Sega Mega Drive, support emulator options such as save states to save your progress, but also lots of special options like choosing between the Japanese and US releases (always always play the Japanese version btw); choosing whether the stereoscopic 3D pops out of the screen, or falls in; or, my personal favorite, turning on/off the "special" mode which features a level select and the ever-famous Spin Dash. That's right; Spin Dash natively in Sonic 1. 3D Sonic 2 features much the same, except the Spin Dash is already there, so it's basically just level select, but it also features a "Ring Keeper" mode that allows to start an act with 10 rings if you finished the last act with 10+ rings. Unfortunately, M3 never got to Sonic 3 & Knuckles, so you'll have to go elsewhere for that masterpiece. These two games are fantastic, and my favorite way to play Sonic's first adventures on the go.

4: Rhythm Heaven Megamix ($30) This is one I haven't gotten around to playing for myself, however, I've been working through Rhythm Tengoku on the GBA, and Rhythm Heaven on the DS. I absolutely love the Rhythm Heaven series! I've never been good at rhythm games, but Rhythm Heaven makes it so accessible! Megamix features returning games from past titles alongside new games. If you're a fan of rhythm games, pick up this one for your 3DS!

3: Cave Story ($10) Cave Story is a classic Metroidvania originally developed for PC. It's recieved numerous re-releases, fan ports, translations, etc. Most people will probably tell you to get Cave Story+ for Switch or PC. While that version looks amazing, I would highly recommend the eShop version of the game. It's a unique combination of the original gameplay/artwork, but also introduces some of the updates from things like Cave Story 3D and Cave Story+. It's actually listed on the Cave Story Wiki its own unique version! Cave Story is an incredible game, and the 3DS eShop version is my favorite way to play it handheld.

2: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice / Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Duel Destinies ($30 ea.) The Ace Attorney series is by far one of the most popular visual novels ever. Originally released on the Gameboy Advance in Japan, and on the DS internationally, these games have spawned a series of 6 total games in the main series. The last two games in that series are Duel Destinies and Spirit of Justice. As an Ace Attorney fan, it would have crushed me if I couldn't get these after the eShop closes. As of June 2022, these games are exclusive to the 3DS eShop, with no known plans to port/re-release them on any other platform. If you're a fan of the Ace Attorney series, you are in desperate need of purchasing these games before they're gone.

Honorable Mentions These next two items don't exactly fit the criteria of a "game recommendation", but I felt it was right to mention them here nevertheless.

First, DSiWare. The DSi was ground-breaking, as it featured Internet access for the first time on a Nintendo handheld. When the DSi released, there was also a series of software released exclusively to be downloaded from the DSi Shop called DSiWare. Some DSiWare games are still well-known, like Shantae: Risky's Revenge and Wario Ware: Snapped. Some of the games were actually ports of mobile games, like Plants vs. Zombies and Cut the Rope. Regardless, DSiWare is available on the 3DS eShop, given second life on the newer handheld. However, these are going away for the second time when the 3DS eShop closes, this time for good. If there's any DSiWare you're even remotely interested in, now's your time.

Second, Virtual Console. The Nintendo Virtual Console series started on the Wii, but continued on the 3DS. Essentially, it's individually emulated retro games. There's games from the NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Sega Game Gear, even the TurboGrafx-16! There's a lot to be gained here, and for some gamers, it's the only viable way to emulate SNES on a handheld. If you're interested in retro games, then for the love of Arceus, get some Virtual Consoles!!!

Alright, enough honorable mentions. Onto the top spot on my list...

1: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($30) That's right, another Ace Attorney game. Only this time, it's three! The Ace Attorney Trilogy is a compilation of the three original Ace Attorney games from the DS, this time featuring stereoscopic 3D! For the most part, you're just saving money on three individual DS cartridges, but there are some little changes, for example the writing of Case 5 in the first game was edited to make it flow better with the over-arching story of the Ace Attorney series. While yes, this same Trilogy is available on all new-generation consoles and Steam, the 3DS eShop version is the only way to experience it in the original DS format. It was a big deal for gaming at the time, and I just don't think it's the same to play it on one screen (which sounds weird reading that out loud to myself). If you get the chance, I highly recommend getting this on 3DS, even if you later buy it on a new-gen console.

[TRANSLATION] Art and Piece Issue 16 - Andrew Lam about Leslie Cheung

“His 'wooh-oh-o' will last in our memories forever.”

WOOH-OH-O STILL THE MOST AVANT-GARDE

Andrew Lam Man Chung - "Sleepless Nights" lyricist

I am Andrew Lam, a lyricist. I still remember Gor-gor using his unique tone and voice to sing wooh-oh-o - it sounded really good, I really think I'll remember it for the rest of my life. Sleepless Nights remains avant-garde even today; after all, who could forget his unique voice and dancing? I think the first time I worked with him was on the song Liu Lang / Nomad. I used the pen name "Rock Lang" to write the lyrics because I was signed to Polygram at the time, so I had to do it anonymously. I already knew beforehand that the song was for Leslie. It was the theme song for the movie Nomad in which he co-starred with Cecilia Yip, and I liked the song a lot.

In the eighties, Leslie and Alan Tam were two superstars who dominated the whole music industry. But actually, everyone is different, so I tried my best to create songs which fit the specific artist's image. We didn't even discuss anything, they'd just sing whatever I wrote. Performers at the time weren't so fake, they respected writers a lot. In my mind, Leslie's image was tied to dancing. He had a really powerful stage presence and was really handsome, so I could write very colourful lyrics and write words which painted a scene. I feel like his songs had to be lively, maybe because he was good at dancing. His songs Blue Sorrow, Sayonara, Crossed-out Love... you could say that he really brought a lot to the music industry.

Of course, Leslie’s lyrics were also the most experimental for that time. At first, I wrote about a lot of ideas for Gor-gor. I really hoped that I could set myself apart from other lyricists, and a lot of those experiments were very successful. After a while, I wanted to create more fresh, avant-garde works, and thus came Sleepless Nights. It’s a really forward-thinking song, and I must confess that I haven’t been able to surpass it even now, at the time of my retirement. You can’t really find a song more avant-garde than Sleepless Nights because we pushed the limits of the Cantonese language in lyrics to its boundaries. Furthermore, there was a lot of room to play around with the arrangement of the song. It was really unconventional - thinking back on it, I remember Mrs Chan (Leslie’s manager) told me Leslie needed a song to join the Tokyo Music Festival and hoped that I could write it. She also got the really famous Japanese songwriter Funayama Motoki to compose the song. At the time, there were very few local works which were arranged so well.

The song was written on a time crunch. The original lyrics in my draft here have way more stuff than the released version. I still remember vividly the producer saying, “Gor-gor singing the first two paragraphs was already more than enough, so I didn’t ask him to record the other two.”Gor-gor didn’t change the lyrics and just sang it like a professional, even though there were a few “wooh-oh-o”s because I was too lazy to figure out more lyrics. To be honest, he could have easily replaced it with something else but he chose to sing it anyway. Singing it with his tone and beautiful voice, it sounded amazing - I’m glad I didn’t just scribble down four random words. That’s what’s special about him. Other lyrics might not have left a lasting impression, but his “wooh-oh-o” will last in our memories forever.

Despite all this, I didn’t actually interact much with Leslie, nor was I an Alan Tam guy. I was on everyone’s good side.

“If I can work, why not work?” I was lucky enough to write for the biggest two stars of the time. But eventually, I stopped working with them and started releasing my own CDs.
