If you look closely at the sign for Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom, you may notice it looks very cloud-like. This is because the sign's attachment is reused from Delta Dreamflight! You can even still see the notches on the bottom when you go under the sign!

The Fentons go to Disney World and Danny makes it his personal mission to haunt the Haunted Mansion ride. But not all day because he promised Jazz he’d kick her butt with marksmanship on Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin.
Bruce Wayne coincidentally brought his kids for a day of relaxation.
Chaos ensues.

The unmade PUSS IN BOOTS sequel...
Tumblr media
In an alternate timeline, the 2nd PUSS IN BOOTS movie would've been released during the holiday season of 2018... It would've been a significantly different movie, too.
It would not have been directed by Joel Crawford, but rather Chris Miller, who directed the first PUSS IN BOOTS movie, and SHREK THE THIRD as well. He's not *that* Chris Miller of the Phil Lord-Chris Miller duo, but a long-time DreamWorks Animation veteran whose work goes all the way back to their debut feature ANTZ.
The title was PUSS IN BOOTS: NINE LIVES & 40 THIEVES.
It had, you may have guessed it, a 1001 Arabian Nights setting.
The concept art for this picture suggested something pretty damn cool. I absolutely love PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH, in fact it is my favorite film in the entire SHREK franchise and just a new favorite movie of mine, period.
But... I'm not gonna lie, I would really love to see what *this* movie would've been like. I'm sure it would've had a tone and directing style similar to that of the first PUSS IN BOOTS, and the visual style for it would've been about the same: Much more hyper-detailed with ornate textures everywhere (look at Puss' sword in that movie and the other SHREKs, and look at his much simplified sword in THE LAST WISH), no framerate fluctuations, etc.
The SHREK series had often covered European fairy tales, and the first PUSS IN BOOTS movie married such fairy tales like Jack and the Beanstalk, and the Golden Goose, to a more old-school adventure genre: Think Zorro, Three Musketeers, etc. Threw in spaghetti westerns for good measure. It was a sandier side of the SHREK world, deserts, and Spanish and Latin American-inspired towns. THE LAST WISH retains all of that, the magical "Dark Forest" being not too far removed from the European fairy tale aesthetic. That whole storybook-inspired look they were going for put it firmly in the European fairy tale, I feel. Again, best of both worlds... But there's other worlds, right?
NINE LIVES & 40 THIEVES would've taken us more East, and I'd really love to see that in the fairy tale universe of SHREK. Who's to say they can't... take that idea off the shelf again? After all, THE LAST WISH ends with a direct lead-in to a fifth SHREK movie. Perhaps SHREK 5 can incorporate the Arabian Nights setting? Or a third PUSS IN BOOTS movie where we only follow "Team Friendship" on a new adventure?
About that... Very few Western animated movies spawn ongoing spin-off feature film series. DESPICABLE ME scored with the MINIONS movie in 2015, and that got an equally ginormous sequel this past summer. That was the inverse of LIGHTYEAR to the TOY STORY franchise, LIGHTYEAR could've been a big hit and could've spawned more space adventures with the human/actual space ranger Buzz... But alas, no cigar. (I'm honestly bummed about that, I was ready for more!) THE LEGO MOVIE tried to do this, but I feel Warner Bros. made the mistake of having the studio make two spin-off movies - unrelated to one another, LEGO BATMAN and LEGO NINJAGO - *before* THE LEGO MOVIE 2 proper. Maybe if LEGO MOVIE 2 opened in 2017 as originally planned, with BATMAN and NINJAGO afterwards, we could've had plenty of different theatrical LEGO stories to choose from. DreamWorks' own MADAGASCAR franchise couldn't have a side series of PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR movies, the first one - released back in 2014 - was deemed a box office disappointment. Its "flopping" actually lead to a big restructuring month at DreamWorks, which took NINE LIVES & 40 THIEVES off their schedule...
It was very possible that the movie was no more, much like other DreamWorks pictures that got the axe at the time: BOLLYWOOD SUPERSTAR MONKEY, B.O.O.: BUREAU OF OTHERWORLDLY OPERATIONS, etc. Thankfully, PUSS Dos remained in limbo rather than being outright cancelled.
But NINE LIVES & 40 THIEVES didn't make it, we got THE LAST WISH instead.
But now... THE LAST WISH has been a leggy box office success, a record-breaking one at that, too. It's actually the first post-1999 wide-release animated movie since THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE to make more than 10x its opening weekend gross... EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE came out in 2000... So that makes **two**, **two** animated movies released in the domestic market since 1999 that scored 10x their opening weekend grosses... WOW!
So yes, I'd imagine the PUSS IN BOOTS train won't be stopping. I think it's a strong possibility that we get *both* new SHREK sequels *and* new PUSS IN BOOTS sequels. Puss showed with both movies that he can more than hold his own and have his own long-form adventures w/ Kitty Softpaws and Perrito. The original made over $500m worldwide back in 2011/12, and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars much like this film, which looks to finish up with over $450m worldwide. Hey, is it possible somebody else gets a new movie, too? I feel there's a lot of ground to cover in Shrek's fairy tale world that goes beyond Shrek's swamp, Far Far Away, San Ricardo, Del Mar, the lands inbetween, etc.... A magic carpet that's reminiscent of the one in most ALADDIN interpretations appears in THE LAST WISH as part of Big Jack Horner's collection, so maybe that Arabian Nights-style world is still out there and might be featured in a future SHREK/PUSS IN BOOTS movie?
I'd love to see that, honestly. Since the world of SHREK is back in business, I say go explore and expand that world!

Hi friend!! Congrats on your milestone!!! 🥹🫶🏻
My question for you (seeing how much you frequent Disney World) is what would be the Triple Frontier boys favorite attraction/park at Disney and why??? and why is Frankie's Space Mountain heheheh 😉
Oh Madeline - first of all, thank you so much!
This question ... oh boy, friend, do I have thoughts! I'm going to nerd out, so my (lengthy) answer is after the cut.
Frankie - I'm with you that he enjoyed Space Mountain in his younger years, but as he's gotten older, he realizes just how jerky and not smooth that ride is. It hurts his back and makes his head hurt. He's a big fan of Millenium Falcon: Smugglers Run in the Star Wars section of Hollywood Studios. On the ride, there are six positions - two of which are pilot. He lowkey gets really salty whenever little kids are given that role because they inevitably crash the Falcon. He also likes Soarin' at Epcot and Avatar Flight of Passage at Animal Kingdom because they're flying-based and remind him of flight simulators.
Benny - Two rides immediately jumped out for me. Jungle Cruise at Magic Kingdom because Benny loves a dad joke and cracks up every time he goes on the ride. He also likes Test Track at Epcot because he loves cars and going fast. Another one I thought about for him (based on my headcanon for him related to my Delta Landscaping fic) is the safari ride at Animal Kingdom because he is an animal lover.
Santiago - He's a PeopleMover kind of guy at Magic Kingdom. It gives his knees a chance to rest for about 10 minutes. Same thing for Living With the Land at Epcot (a personal favorite of mine). It's a relaxing indoor ride and gives him the chance to kick his feet up.
Will - I struggled with him, but he seems like a competitive guy. Therefore, he likes to kick the guys' asses in rides like Toy Story Mania at Hollywood Studios or Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom. Benny always wants a rematch, but Will has studied the rides and knows all the tips and tricks to get extra points and bonuses. There's no beating him on either ride.

Buzz Lighyear's Space Ranger Spin at The Magic Kingdom may no longer be a pure Omnimover attraction, but the Omnimover track is still the same as it was when it opened as If You Had Wings! Here you can see blueprints for If You Had Wings, as well as Delta Dreamflight and Buzz!

WDW Newsies AU: Magic Kingdom
Jack works at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, specifically at the wheelchair entrance. He occasionally gets to talk to little kids and other guests about cowboys and westerns
Katherine works at Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, specifically at the wheelchair entrance. She loves giving guests (especially kids) tips on how to score the most points
Davey works at Haunted Mansion, specifically in the little hallway between the stretching room and the wheelchair entrance (basically, he works the "chicken exit" for the ride). If things aren't too busy, he'll stand in that little corridor and wait for guests to notice him standing there (he's scared a lot of people doing that)
This was partially inspired by this post from @we-are-inevitable
Crutchie works at Haunted Mansion, specifically at the wheelchair entrance. He loves getting to talk to Disabled guests (especially kids) and scaring bratty kids with Albert
Spot works at Under the Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid. He absolutely hates it, but loves to call Albert "Ariel" because it pisses him off
Jojo works at Peter Pan's Flight
Racer works at Monsters Inc., Laugh Floor, specifically going around with the microphone to different guests (he usually picks kids)
Tommy Boy works in Main Street, U.S.A. as one of the Dapper Dans
Smalls works at the Swiss Family Treehouse. They love telling guests about little easter eggs hidden in the attraction
Romeo works as a face character (probably one of the princes) on parade floats
Albert works at the Haunted Mansion, specifically at the exit. He loves scaring bratty kids with Crutchie
Ike works as a Jungle Cruise skipper
Mike works at it's a small world. He hates it, and Ike constantly gives him shit for it
Mush works at Monsters Inc., Laugh Floor, specifically at the entrance. He gives guests ideas for jokes to send in to the show
Kid Blink works at Pirates of the Caribbean
Henry is a chef at the Be Our Guest restaurant
Specs works at Space Mountain
Darcy is a tour guide for the Keys to the Kingdom tour [Bill loves to go on those tours because he loves how passionate Darcy gets (he also loves how flustered Darcy gets whenever he shows up)]
Sniper works at the Frontierland Shootin' Arcade
Buttons works at Enchanted Tales with Belle, specifically in the room with the wardrobe
Finch works at the Enchanted Tikki Room
Elmer works as a Jungle Cruise skipper

so what rides Would clockboy like
he very much prefers anything gentle; specifically at Disneyland he likes the fantasyland dark rides, pirates of the caribbean (the drop is a little scary for him tho), haunted mansion, and buzz lightyear space ranger spin
basically if it does not spin erratically or have significant drops he's fine with it -- I think you could convince him to ride "starter" coasters and maybe like, Indiana Jones or rise of the resistance, but it's rare. He refuses to go on things that have loops or launches, or drop rides like tower of terror
part of it has to do with his height making some of these rides uncomfortable, but most of it is just he doesn't like to be jostled around and has a low adrenaline tolerance (? Idk if that's the right phrase... it doesn't take a lot for him to have an adrenaline response + he doesn't like how it feels)

Any pictures of the old ride called "If You Had Wings"? Bonus points if you include the song that played on the ride.. Like that other poster, my mom also in Florida in the 80s and has a ton of memories of Disney from that era. That ride was by far her favorite.
What a unique favorite! If You Had Wings was a very interesting attraction, and not only is the ride extinct, but so is the airline that sponsored it!
Eastern Airlines was a popular budget airline in the 1960s, and a year before Walt Disney World opened in September of 1970, it became the “official airline of Walt Disney World”.
Eastern Airlines then sponsored an official attraction; If You Had Wings! It opened January 1972, less than a year after the park opened. It was unique in that it was a free ride; that might seem strange to hear today, when all you have to pay for Disney is admission, but back when the park opened, you had to pay for admission AND a ticket book which you could spend on certain attractions. However, If You Had Wings, being a sponsored attraction that was basically an advertisement, was free with admission and could be ridden as many times as one would like.
It was a fairly simple ride, an Omnimover ride that travelled through various simple sets, mainly using projectors. A highlight and an interesting point in ride tech was the “speed room” - a huge wrap around projection screen encased an incline in the track, with fans blowing and trying to give the guest the feeling of taking off in an airplane. This could be argued as a predecessor to a bunch of technology that Disney uses in its rides today, but I think it’s best compared to both the Circle-Vision 360 shows (which are huge 360 degree movies, mostly found in Epcot today) and Soarin’ which uses a huge dome-shaped projection screen to give the illusion of flight.
At the very end of the ride, as guests exited, there was an Eastern Airlines travel agent to help book their next vacation.
The thing most people remember about it is the theme song, If You Had Wings, written by Buddy Baker! Listen to it here, with the song starting at 1:00:
youtube
Unfortunately, Eastern Airlines would drop its sponsorship with Disney in June of 1987. Disney then removed any reference to the airline in the park and closed the ride; it opened again about a week later as “If You Could Fly”, but without its signature theme song, disappointing fans of the ride. This version was closed in 1989.
Delta took up the opportunity to partner with Disney, and reopened the ride with all new music and scenes as Delta Dreamflight. However, Delta’s sponsorship would end in 1996 and the ride would close yet again and reopen as Disney’s Take Flight, which actually kept the same music and scenes with only a few minor lyric changes. The attraction was not popular, though, and was closed in 1998.
Replacing Delta Dreamflight was an all new attraction: Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, hugely popular and still in the same spot today. It actually uses the same Omnimover ride system, which isn’t so much of a surprise as Disney loves Omnimover rides, but it also uses the same track layout! Disney has a habit of doing this when replacing rides, as it’s extremely expensive to rebuild the track layout from scratch and far easier to just use what’s already there.
Eastern Airlines, the former sponsor of the attraction, would go the way of the dodo and shut down in 1991, only 4 years after dropping its sponsorship with Disney. If you’d like to know more about it, Defunctland made an excellent video about its history here:
youtube
Today, sponsored rides at Disney are a rarity; the only one I can think of off the top of my head is the Chevrolet sponsored Test Track at Epcot, which is similar to If You Had Wings in that it ends with basically a huge advertisement. (You can buy a car there. Literally. Who goes to Disney World and buys a car? I really wanna know if someone’s done that.)
Unfortunately, since it was not a particularly popular attraction and it’s also a fairly old one, what I can find is basically relegated to just a few pictures of the ride. I will still add those to the queue for you, though!
