There's a post about American tourists not bothering to learn the language of the country they visit versus at least making an attempt, and I don't wanna derail it because it's not a tourist story but I remembered two incidents from when I worked retail.

Once, I was ringing someone up, and I was supposed to ask "Do you want help putting it in the car?" I did, and the customer stared blankly before saying slowly "I don't speak English. Español." I blanked for a second, but I do remember some words from high school, so after a bit of pause I pointed out to the cars and asked "Ayudar?"

I remember her expression just lit up suddenly, and she shook her head and said no. I added "Sorry. Mi Español... mal. Muy mal. Habla poquito." The lady laughed, reached over the register to pat my hand, and said "No. Good. Good." And for the rest of our encounter, she would tell me the Spanish word for whatever I was ringing up.

Years later, at another store, I was ringing up a couple and their teenage son. The couple spoke Spanish, and they wanted cigarettes. But I couldn't understand what one they wanted.

I said "No habla. Poquito. Perdon..." and pointed at the box behind me. "Roja?"

They helped me figure out what they wanted based on the color (They wanted the gray box. I said "I don't know 'gray.' Perdon."

Of course then it turned out the teenager spoke English the whole time, he'd just not said a word until I was finishing up their purchase (his parents looked happier) and he just said "'Gray' is gris. Also you're saying the formal 'sorry,' you wanna say 'lo siento.'"

When I told these stories years later, I mentioned how both times they looked happier after I spoke. My friend told me "Yeah, they were happy because you were making an effort."

Modern au scarian with the cactus ring being a bit is SO FUNNY there are so many ways this could go.... you've got the 3rd life is a play concept, you could have it be a spur of the moment joke with some cactus gummies, it could be a meme in a socmed au, maybe they just went on a hike and grian accidentally elbowed scar into a cactus and now nobody will let either of them live it down. The possibilities are endless im truly obsessed with this
