sometimes i think about my spn oc and how i rewrote everything about amara to interact with the story i was trying to tell about her. there were some really neat ideas in that i need to recycle for something one day. like, in the show proper, they just let amara take over a human baby and that’s fine, but amara’s not Meant To Be Here. this entire universe is one constructed in her absence. saying she can possess a human body should be like saying if you took a person and sent them to a universe where 1+1=3, they could just figure out how to function within that.
which in story took the form of Amara being something that could not be Understood, only Rationalized. a force locked outside the narrative who could only get inside and destroy things if given a role within it. by the Winchesters as A Monster To Face. by Chuck as Wayward, Unreachable Sister. and by miss oc as. simultaneously a projected creature to be saved, an amalgamation of injustices done to herself (and others) that would never be righted but could be made up for by being a part of this. and as something impossibly powerful that could be both protection and purpose.
and the Darkness wasn’t any of those things, really, but to have agency in her own story required new shackles, but ones she was always straining against. she wouldn’t fit inside the confines of a human mind, let alone a body, at least not well enough to leave it Intact. like lucifer burning through nick, but Worse. because the burns were an expected outcome of skin not strong enough to hold him. humans were built for angels, some were built better and some worse, but they’re meant to work. putting amara in human skin should disconnect the skin and mind and soul from the reality her brother built itself, i think. slowly. bit by bit.
and at the same time, i’d gone and written the kind of wild scenario you really can only write for your thirteen year old mary sue, given that spn oc the part of herald/high priestess/failed vessel. which she pursued with wild abandon like that would fix anything wrong with her <3
in the end, running alongside the borrowed family theming of the original show was my own theme of “how much self-annihilation will you accept to make your point. are you accepting it, really. or are you seeking it.” not just physically, in letting something unmake the base components of what you are as it tries to fit inside you or in it constricting and suffocating itself beyond self-recognition to get inside in the first place, but, obviously, it’s supernatural, how much selfhood do you cede to your family. is it worth it.
it was interesting, if nothing else. let thirteen year old me cook. she had ideas.

Trigun spoilers!! (Maximum and Stampede)
Ok, I'm gonna talk about the whole *trying to get someone to shoot you to prove that they actually believe what they're saying* thing as its been presented so far in tristamp and compare it to trimax. It's not super comprehensive, mostly based on the scene with Vash and Wolfwood in vol 2 of maximum and episode 10 in stampede with Meryl, Roberto, and Conrad.

Ok, so I'm re-reading trimax while re-watching tristamp as my roomate watches it, and I noticed this. Here, Wolfwood says "If you really believe I'm wrong, pull the trigger." He wants Vash to shoot/kill him to prove his resolve.

Here, Conrad seems to ask Meryl and Roberto the same. If Meryl really thinks he's a monster who is killing and torturing, she should kill him in order to stop him. If she really believes that, she should kill him.
These are two instances of a character asking to be killed by a person who criticized them (in trimax for killing Rai-Dei, and in tristamp for torturing/experimenting on children), so that they can prove their resolve.
Of course these are different situations. Even in that panel, Wolfwood wants Vash to kill him so that Vash can do it again, to save himself in the future. Wolfwood wants Vash to be able to protect himself. He thinks that it would be just to die to teach Vash how to live. Whereas Conrad really doesn't want Meryl to shoot him. He even justifies himself, "But before you strike me down, know that you're eliminating a world of possibilities."
I think these similarities say more about Vash and Meryl's characterization in relation to each other than Wolfwood and Conrad. Vash responds like this:

He is actively refuting Wolfwood. No, he's obviously not going to shoot him, but he has an answer. On the next page he says "You... told me back then... that my face looked better with a real smile. If you could see yourself through my eyes now... you'd see a man forcing himself to play the devil while his own heart cries out." Vash sees through Wolfwood. He sees Wolfwood's concern and kind personality and how he tries to justify his actions and life experiences.
In comparison, Meryl in tristamp, also is obviously not going to shoot Conrad, but she doesn't seem to have an answer to that. She says "poor baby" about Elendira, but doesn't really respond to Conrad. (Granted, she might've had time to come up with one if Elendira didn't start attacking them. Or she might not have considered Conrad worth a response.) Interestingly, Roberto does have an answer.

I admit I am biased toward trimax over tristamp, but I do love how they work with Meryl's character in tristamp. In this way, we can see her contrasted with Vash's personality. She holds similar ideals to him, but Vash (as a 150-something year old) knows his ideals, and he knows what he believes, why he believes it, etc. Meryl, however is still learning. Roberto is teaching her.
This is a different perspective than Vash (again, they are talking to different people about different beliefs, but still). Vash responds by pulling at the fact that Wolfwood shouldn't want to die to better other people, but the fact that he does shows some good in him. He wants to be good (kind, helpful), but he expresses it in a way that makes it seem like he's being cruel. Vash points that out, that Wolfwood doesn't have to resort to this. However, Roberto doesn't point out the specific action of asking to be shot to prove a point but Conrad's hypocrisy. While Vash points out the action, Roberto points out the reasoning behind it.
Vash gets Wolfwood wanting to protect and help him, just not the action of getting him to shoot him. Roberto doesn't really acknowledge the asking to get shot part, but the fact that Conrad isn't and won't help anyone.
So yeah, I don't have a complete conclusion to what I think about this, but I thought it was interesting. I think it could be a cool insight into how Roberto influence's Meryl's worldview in tristamp and how it is both similar and differs from Vash.
Like, if tristamp Meryl was placed in Vash's shoes in this scene in the manga, Wolfwood asking her to shoot him to prove that killing is bad, how would she respond? Would she take a page out of Roberto's book and instead of pointing out what Vash does (You don't have to act cruel to get your kindness across), she might point out that killing him wouldn't make killing anyone else easier or some inconsistency with his logic.
Whereas Vash is more emotionally-focused (what feelings are here and where do they come from), Meryl is more logically-focused (the world doesn't work like that), which originates from Roberto? (And the purpose of it coming from Roberto is just to make it more obvious, there's a story to this part of her personality that we can see, so we are more aware?)
Let me know your thoughts, I could be totally wrong, I just got excited when I noticed the similarities in these scenes.

Thinking about that "If K*ylo R*n were a woman everything would be better and this character would have worked" post, but after some consideration...I genuinely would have still hated this character.
Like...Idk maybe there's something to be said for the still-subversive nature of characters like this being allowed to be horrible women, but I don't hate this character because he's horrible, or even because he exemplifies a bunch of things in fiction I'm tired of seeing, I hate him because he doesn't feel fully-formed as a character to me and I don't think the movies know what they're trying to accomplish with him from a narrative standpoint (which are, imo, the biggest Story Sins a writer can commit). All of which would still hold true if this character were a woman.
#I WILL say. this character wouldn't be as popular as they are (and they ARE popular. fandom is not just limited to pockets of tumblr) if#they were a woman. nor would The Popular Ship be r*ylo. that's not me scaremongering about misogyny that's just. true.#we have SEEN that be true again and again and again#the OTHER thing about this character is that...I feel like he was MEANT to come across as#'he's so tortured and pained and complicated' but then they never did anything to SHOW ME THAT COMPLEXITY#if I look at like...(idk using another Tortured Male Character Who Did Bad Things) Theon. I've seen people doing caligula aegon parallels what are your feeling on this as both as someone in both fandoms?
I think I talked about this a bit with @kitsnicket once, lol, but I can kinda see some similarities. Moreso when it comes to personalities than actual political rule, because as governors Aegon and Caligula are very different. I've mentioned this before but it's a bit hard to get a read on how Aegon was as a reigning monarch because he did not reign for a long time (still more time than Rhaenyra's half-year tho shrug dot emoji), whereas Caligula had a bit more time, and had a far larger impact on his world's history than Aegon did. People in Westeros talk about the Dance, yeah, but not a whole lot, and they don't have very many strong opinions on the key players, except for Stannis calling Rhaenyra a traitor, while Caligula has been infamous for two thousand years and has practically entered common parlance the way that infinitely more influential figures have, though for decidedly less kosher reasons.
When it comes to them as people, I can see some surface similarities. Both were ultimately the victims of assassination, both seemed to have favored "new men" over the establishment, both had a period of debilitation and convalescence early on in their reign that also marked a pretty stark change in how the regime operated (Rook's Rest and Caligula's infamous illness), both have a reputation of being somewhat self-indulgent, both were succeeded to the throne by someone who was not their child. And both of them were clearly heavily affected by difficult early lives that had originally started out idyllic, though Caligula far more extremely. Aegon suffered from Viserys's neglect and the issues that caused him, clearly, after Viserys got bored of his newfangled boy baby, but he was still relatively safe, on a physical level, treated well, and surrounded by other family members. Caligula had a longer "cushy" period in his childhood, but after his father died his family was literally wiped out, often through extremely cruel measures (I think both his mother and his older brother were starved to death, and if I remember correctly his older brother was literally trying to eat his own mattress towards the end), and was a hostage from then on until his ascendancy. And while Aegon certainly has no positive feelings towards Viserys or Rhaenyra, they 1) weren't involved in his life all that much (which was part of the problem where Viserys was concerned) and 2) were not a danger to him. Caligula essentially being remanded into Tiberius's personal care was incredibly dangerous for him and his life was under constant threat in a way that Aegon's never was, so he was probably more paranoid in his life than Aegon ever was.
The main thing tho, and I am so sorry (not) to the antis who are definitely using the Aegon/Caligula parallels to talk about how Aegon sucks and Rhaenyra is The One True Queen (she ain't, none of them are, there's no good option they both suck because the system sucks, birthright monarchy is a scam and the Dance proves it, I can and will make this argument day in and day out), is that Aegon was nowhere near as bad as Caligula was. A lot of stuff about Caligula has been exaggerated and flanderized, especially with the amount of time that's gone by and the lack of objective sources, so a lot of what people think of when you say the name Caligula likely wasn't that extreme or flat out not true (the incest, the bit about declaring war on Poseidon and sending his army to stab the sea, the horse thing is iffy because the person who talked about it was Suetonius and Suetonius liked to just make shit up for no reason sometimes and you have to kind of look at the verified behavior/personality of the person he's talking about and then see if what he's saying lines up, it's why I believe him when he talks about Octavian gouging people's eyes out with his own hands or massacring every single senator in a city as a sacrifice just because he was pissed, but I don't buy the bit about him wanting to sleep with other people's wives, and I personally don't know enough about Caligula to make the call on whether the horse thing is accurate to what we concretely know about him). But Caligula also verifiably did a lot of really bad things. He had the treason trials, a continuation of one of Tiberius's most brutal repression tactics, whereas Aegon was far more merciful to people who had fought against him but now went over to his side. Like Aegon II with Rhaenyra's son Aegon, Caligula had a similar "relative of someone I despise who has wronged members of my family" younger person in his life in the form of Gemellus; Aegon deliberately spared Aegon the Younger's life and let him live relatively free of molestation, Caligula had Gemellus murdered (or forced to kill himself, which I don't wrinkle my nose at because tbf I don't know if Aegon wouldn't have also used that as an execution method if it were acceptable in Westeros, and it was basically the same as execution anyway in Ancient Rome, Octavian used it on one of his own fucking friends, true story). Caligula also just executed a lot more people who had just happened to get on his bad side than Aegon ever did; Aegon in general is just more merciful, softer, and not as brutal as Caligula was.
Like I said, there are some comparisons that work, but also a lot of key differences, mostly in terms of Aegon being a better person than Caligula, at least based on the public record, which is funny because again, the people making these comparisons are generally trying to take digs at Aegon/The Greens. But making comparisons between any fictional characters and the Julio-Claudians is always gonna be hard, because all of these bitches led really interesting and deeply intricate lives with a ton of ups and downs that makes it hard to compare them to more linear and limited fictional people.

Hot take maybe but I think Bertie would be FAR more likely to survive the first two months of Dracula than Jeeves would be. Bertie has a healthy sense of self-preservation. Jeeves consistently underestimates how dangerous a situation might get (Steeple Bumpleigh, the club book) because he’s overconfident about his level of control over any given situation. He'd handle Dracula masterfully if they faced off in England, but on Dracula's home turf? Much more doubtful.
I realize this might be a tough sell, so I will explain further (or it's not a tough sell, and I'm going to explain further because I want to). (criteria taken from @canyourfavesurvivecastledracula) Without further ado.
Would Jeeves and Wooster survive Castle Dracula?
Jeeves
Jeeves' survival will depend on how long Dracula finds him more entertaining than irritating. On that basis, I don't think he's long for this world. On the one hand, he has a huge wealth of knowledge about English society and culture that he can recite perfectly from memory. That should buy him at least a little time with noted teaboo Dracula.
On the other hand, he would be absolutely no fun as a vampire plaything. Jeeves cannot be got. Sneaking up on him while he's shaving will yield zero reaction (though that's at least good for his short-term survival--given that, although he DID take the crucifix from the old woman out of politeness, he certainly isn't going to wear it. The rules of fashion don't go out the window just because you're in a spooky castle). Then, although managing the whims of rich jerks is not an insignificant part of a valet's job, Jeeves usually does this by bending his employers to his will. Dracula is not the sort of employer this will work on. It'll just add insult to injury when on top of being impossible to scare, NOW Jeeves is telling Dracula that his favorite cloak is several centuries out of fashion and he's not allowed to wear it anymore.
Jeeves will 100% go exploring in the areas he was told not to go-- though to be fair, he MIGHT actually get away with this, what with his superpower of appearing in rooms without being seen or heard. Said superpower might save him from the brides as well (though this is by no means guaranteed). Since I find it doubtful that Dracula would come to rescue his annoying ass, not being noticed is his best defense.
There are a couple other things working in Jeeves's favor; the question is just whether they'll be enough to save him.
He DOES know shorthand, and could try to send coded letters. He might even have the foresight to squirrel away some extra stationary where Dracula can't find it. But could he get them posted? Would it even do him any good?
He certainly has enough cultural literacy to figure out what his new boss is pretty quickly. If he didn't chuck the crucifix out the carriage window, he might start carrying it around in his pocket.
Psychology of the individual, sure, but the individual in question is a 400-year-old vampire who lives in an isolated castle in a foreign country and is regarded as a terrifying mythological figure in the surrounding villages. Jeeves has never come up against anything this alien before, he's cut off from his normal resources, and opportunities to play people against each other are limited.
He probably has enough upper body strength from all that shrimping and fishing to climb the wall, so he COULD escape if he wanted to, if he survived long enough. It's just, again, that overconfidence, and also Dracula has a vast library full of rare old books that are entirely at his disposal. He's keeping his eyes and ears alert for potential escape strategies, of course, but I don't see him being as desperate to get out as Jonathan was.
There are just a lot of "depends on"s here, and I'm not convinced that luck would shake out in Jeeves's favor, all things considered.
Bertie
Bertie is so perfect for the job of Castle Dracula Prisoner it's like it was made for him. Think about it. Being held against his will in big manor houses comes more naturally to him than breathing. He's afraid of things that are scary. A lifetime of dealing with Aunt Agatha has made him the world's preeminent expert in "curl[ing] up in a ball in the hope that a meek subservience [will] enable [him] to get off lightly." He will NEVER go exploring in places he's been warned away from if nobody is forcing him to (Rev. Aubrey Upjohn's office notwithstanding. There were biscuits in there). He's both fun to talk to and easy to toy with (and extremely English). A+ prisoner. Dracula adores him.
In my opinion, Bertie is at Castle Dracula either because Aunt Agatha got some wires seriously crossed and thinks he’s going to meet an eligible potential bride (I mean, there are certainly brides there), or because Dracula has something Aunt Dahlia wants him to steal (far less likely, given that one of Dracula’s THINGS is famously not owning anything silver). Either way, he's shown himself entirely willing and able to escape down drainpipes if a sitch gets too scaly.
He DOES take the crucifix, and DOES wear it (which is what will save him during the shaving scene, because you KNOW he's going to jump a foot and cut himself like the dickens). He's read enough supernatural goosefleshers to be genre savvy about terrified old women cryptically pushing crucifixes into one's hands. I also think his sunny disposish endeared him to the villagers, and they were particularly vehement about urging him not to go. He doesn't speak German or Romanian, but he's empathetic enough to recognize Pure Terror. So by the time he actually gets to the castle, his imagination is already running wild and he's plenty aware that he is in imminent danger.
I think the biggest risk to Bertie will be the brides; whether or not he's susceptible to trances, if he thinks they're trying to marry him, it's against the code of the Woosters to turn them down. But that only becomes an issue if he comes face to face with them, which, luckily, I think is unlikely on account of the aforementioned "won't go exploring" (and if he did, Dracula would definitely rescue him).
I'm inclined to say due to his drainpipe-escape habits that he WOULD be able to climb the wall and MAY attempt to sneak into Dracula's room to look for the keys if his desperation grows to outweigh his fear. Whether he does or not, though, he does NOT have the stomach to attempt shovel murder, and therefore won't get magic brain fever, and may very well simply walk out the front doors when the people come to take the boxes away. OR he climbs his way out like Jonathan did. Either way.
When Bertie tells this story at the Drones later, Tuppy will say that no doubt it's been greatly exaggerated and all that probably happened was that he spent a couple months in an oldish house entertaining a weird loner.

Paulina and Sam suggest Danny to try to become a singer in order to change society's opinion about ghosts a little. In the end, the otherworldly sound of his voice can at least be used for the benefit of Realms.
And it seems like the Everlasting Trio is really liked by the public. At first they just release a few songs (Exams kill, Battle with myself, What an Autopsy Won't Show, Among the stars). But a mysterious atmosphere mixed with understandable teenage problems begins to take over teens playlists. Their fans want more and more.
So, when under the pressure of the public and profit-hungry bigwigs all bans on the presence of ecto creatures in the United States are lifted, the Trio goes on their first Tour.

Jason stumbles upon Phantom's songs completely by accident. It was painful to hear them for the first time but at the same time it was as if he could breathe again because he had found someone similar. Someone who understands, and who doesn't judge him for coming back wrong. Jason listens to his voice on repeat and the rage seems to recede and subside. There is sadness of loss and fear in the songs but most of them end bringing some hope and this thought gives Red Hood more strength not to break down for another day. and then another, and another..And one day, the green eyes in the mirror do not scare Jason but shows him that he belonging to something more. Todd can't explain it more precisely, but it was as if the waters of Lazarus inside him had calmed down and he was no longer enemies with them. He even jokes with Tim that he is finally rest in peace and ready to live a full undead life when his brother (God, his lil brother whom he wanted to hurt recently because of his own stupidity), asks him about his strange behavior.

Jason forgets how to breathe again. His favorite band, and most importantly his favorite vocalist, is coming to Gotham with a concert. For many years now, none of the nonresidents have dared to take such a risk, but it seems like Phantom has absolutely no instinct for self-preservation. Well, as a true fan, Red Hood will do his best so that none of the gothamites spoil the Trio's impression of their first concert here. Danny is beside himself with excitement. Their concert in the hometown of the Red Hood was approved. Of course, there is no chance that he would be able to meet such a busy vigilante but Phantom continues to dream. If he'll fly a little over the city instead of sleeping after rehearsals, maybe he'll get an autograph from at least one member of the bat clan.
