Dp x Dc Why do I hear boss music?

Drabble or ficlet? Who knows I thought of this and would like to write a short dp x dc

The Joker was walking around gleefully he had escaped Arkham yet again but he hadn't done anything yet. Tim was on strict watching duty to see if he can catch Joker in a scheme before he did anything. Everyone else was either off-world, Jason and Dick, or in the middle of busting a trafficking ring, Bruce and Damian. So the Joker was still a high enough priority to keep an eye on but they didn't have the men to spare to take him back.

Tim knew he was being extra stealthy he did not want to become the next Robin victim he had enough clown trauma thank you very much. But he still swore the maniac had turned towards him with a creepy ass smile he always wears. But after an hour of just mindless wandering in the dark, the Joker had yet to do anything. That was until he turned down an alley toward a kid wearing headphones.

Now who wore soundproof headphones while wandering a back alley in the Gotham? Tim could only assume a tourist on top of the kid was prime adoption bait with black hair and pretty glowing blue eyes. Wait glowing? Tim couldn't tell properly from his vantage point on the roof across the street but it really did look like his eyes were glowing blue. And the Joker had noticed too, Shit the Joker was after a defenseless pretty meta. It's just a plus he had black hair and blue eyes, Joker knew Batman had an adoption type.

Time watched in slow motion as the Joker smiled at him and then reached for the teen. The Joker ripped the soundproof headphones off and Tim was hauling ass only stumbling when he heard boss music?

Danny was the final boss.

It started off as a joke between Sam, Tucker, and him, he was the ghost king after all so that means he was technically the final boss. If this were a game he would be the final showdown for heroes to protect the world. Pariah Dark was literally his final boss and he took that mantle up.

So what did the trio do they made a playlist of all their final boss music whether it was video games or movies and played it anytime Danny was visiting them, as he was now in Gotham working on his college degree. But what Danny never would admit is he genuinely enjoyed that playlist and listened to it when he was trying to amp himself up for what future project he needed to work on. Like now he was wandering the streets trying to get inspiration on his final project for class while listening to some boss music to stir up adrenaline.

Sometimes he forgot he was in the most crime-ridden town and that technically he was a meta so color him surprised when he was amping himself up this Freakshow wannabe ripped his headphones off. Not cool. But the worst part was the cord coming off his phone blasting the music. Now he can get away with listening to boss music but he will forever cringe at what started playing when those headphones were yanked away.

Philza has learnt a few things about Technoblade over the course of his sickness. The first being that the kid really loves potatoes. It didn’t matter how ill and uninterested in food he felt, if Phil put a potato in front of Techno, he would eat it. Even if he threw it up a couple of hours later.

Phil is a notorious worrywart. And having Techno sick in bed as a consequence of trying to meet Phil makes him think about the boy’s journey. Whether they were warm enough, if the weather was decent, if they had to walk the entire way? He’s especially concerned as to whether they were able to acquire enough for both of them. Because Tommy is young and Techno is a mage. Both kids and magic require fuel and a failure to supply it can be catastrophic. 

But despite Phil’s worries, Techno manages to keep his food down after the first day. Sure he’s only eating mashed potatoes but it’s still something. And it honestly brings joy to his heart when he sees Techno’s face light up at the plate of potatoes. 

And Phil laughs because he’s never met someone so in love with one food.

(And Phil cries because Wilbur never managed to keep any food down when he was sick.)

The second is that cabin fever sets in incredibly quickly for Techno. It didn’t even take a full day before he was complaining and trying to get out of bed despite how weak his legs were. There were many times Phil watched as Techno attempted to escape his plush prison, too sick to actually succeed.

Except there was one time Philza had left Techno alone so he could make dinner that night. He had assumed that the boy would be too tired that day to try and get up, and it wasn’t like Phil could just not feed them all. But apparently the second Phil took his eyes off him, Techno decided it was time for bad ideas! Which led to both Phil and Tommy being incredibly alarmed when they heard a thump from the bedroom.

What they discovered when they ran into the room was Techno. On the floor. Desperately trying to extract his legs from where he’d caught them in his blankets. Nobody had been impressed by the situation, and once Techno was back into bed and given the scolding of his life, he complained.

And Phil laughs because it's so simple, but Tommy was doing the exact same thing just a few days ago.

(And Phil cries because Wilbur could never manage to make it out of bed on his worst days, his very existence weighed down by something he couldn't control.)

The third is that Techno for all his silence is wonderful to talk to. The boy is incredibly intelligent and he has a wicked sense of humor. He has a love for the mythological, especially Greek. Phil has had the pleasure of listening to Techno recount his favorite myths. The way he tells them may be a tad unconventional, but honestly? Phil hasn’t had this much fun in years.

But at the same time, Techno is so clearly unused to talking to people outside of Tommy. There’s an awkwardness in how he talks to Phil, like he isn’t really sure what he’s doing. And there is a likelihood he’s naturally awkward. That Techno would communicate in the same way even if he was used to others. It comes across in Tommy as well, in how blunt he is with his feelings and questions.

But alas, Phil has become prone to worrying in recent years. His brain will latch onto anything that could be perceived as a problem and rotate it around in his head. But here, looking after Techno and listening to him talk, Phil can’t help but feel more content than he has in a while.

And Phil laughs because Techno has a way with words that is captivating.

(And Phil cries because Wilbur also had a way with words, Wilbur was able to spin tales from nothing and captivate people with only some words and a smile.)

The last thing is that Techno, in all his charm and awkwardness, holds a lot of similarities to Wilbur.

Phil laughs because he’s like Wilbur.

Technoblade doesn't know how to feel about this Philza Minecraft. 

He's a completely different man from the stories he and Tommy grew up hearing. 

The Philza from the legends and rumors was powerful, a magical prodigy and a kind soul above all else. The man in front of Techno is different. He doesn't carry himself like one of the most revered men in the world. He doesn’t appear as if he once held the might of nature in his very hands. He doesn’t look like High Wizard Philza Minecraft, Advisor to the King and Master of the Arcane Arts. 

The Philza in front of him looks… tired. Sad. And Techno doesn’t know how to feel about it. Because while he didn’t really have any expectations for what Philza would look like, this blows it all away. 

He just looks like… Phil. Weird old Phil who talks to crows like they talk back. 

Who still hasn’t kicked him and Tommy out yet. 

Because here’s the thing, Techno and Tommy are resource drains. They’re two extra people in a house built for one. There’s only enough space and resources for Phil and Techno is expecting that it's only a matter of time before they’re asked to leave.

So he’s not surprised when one day Phil approaches him with a request.

What he isn't expecting, is what the request actually is.

“Come help me out in the garden mate” Techno is shocked. “What?” 

“Come help me in the garden. The storm swept away a good chunk of the crops so I want to get on top of that as soon as we can” “But, why?” “Well I can’t just let us go and starve now can I?”

“No, I don’t understand. Why haven’t you asked Tommy and I to leave” It takes Phil a while to answer that one. He stills and gets lost in his head as Techno has watched him do so many times. And just as Techno begins to fear that he’s accidentally wandered into some unknown sorespot, Phil shrugs. “I can’t. I won't Techno”

And Techno can’t reply to that. He doesn’t know how. So he follows Phil into the garden and learns to help.

Phil shows him how to safely fill up buckets in the river, and shows him how to rinse off any mud that remains on the plants. Phil shows him how to cover any revealed roots, how to identify and remove broken stems. 

The process of saving the garden only takes a couple days, but Phil warns him that the garden itself needs constant upkeep. 

And he grows to enjoy it. 

Techno enjoys the constant and methodical calm that comes with looking after the plants. The routine of it grants him a peace that he's never found before, the garden grants him respite. 

And once the yard work is finished, he and Phil will head back inside to wash up and then Techno spends the rest of the day reading or playing with Tommy. 

But one day this pattern breaks. 

Techno has just finished putting the tools away, when Phil gestures for him to follow, and he begins to walk into the forest. 

Techno isn't sure where they're going. The forest is massive, there is so much more to it than the confined area the crows keep Tommy in. 

But something about the way he walks makes Techno think that Phil knows exactly where they're headed. 

They walk past clearings, over streams further into the trees until Phil comes to a halt. They’ve stopped in a clearing that contains a stream, the water clear and bubbling onwards. There’s a fallen log lying haphazardly on the ground and that’s what Philza lowers himself onto as he stares at the gurgling water.

“People tend to think of magic as this mysterious energy, as something to be utilized. I used to have people ask me what the trick was. How they could get so good at magic as well," Phil turns away from the stream now to look at him. Techno steps forward, his breath leaving his chest. Surely Phil can’t be…

"That's all bullshit. There is no secret and there never was one."

Phil reaches over to tap on Techno's chest. "This is where magic comes from. You. And nature. Magic is no more special than lightning or flame, it is simply another force within our world."

Phil sighs, and Techno can't help but think that Phil looks, sad. Resigned. And Techno doesn't know why but it makes him feel the same way as when Tommy cries. 

"I’ll help you Techno, I’ll teach you how to stop treating your magic like lightning in a bottle”

It's alive! IT'S ALIIIIIIIVEEE!! My greatest invention is finally finished, the best 100% OFFICIAL secret boss ever made!! BEHOLD, THE- What the hell is that. It's QUIDDO?!

Normally, this is the part where i start to tell you this little guy's tragic story, but this time there isn't much to talk about.

They were a simple Darkner, brought in their initial darkworld by a certain lightner. They didn't really do... Anything special, they just were there. And all of a sudden their lightner just abandoned them somewhere in another darkworld in complete isolation for no apparent reason.

Yet still, it didn't seem like all of this bothered Quiddo in the slightest, they were so... Neutral.

One day, a strange man somehow managed to reach Quiddo. Quiddo felt happy! They had a new friend! They played for some time with the man, it was fun! But when the man left, something clicked inside of Quiddo, a strange feeling deep inside of them.

Quiddo didn't know what it was. But i think, that if they're ever abandoned again, something horrible will happen.

Now, you may be wondering; "Mercair, what the hell is that thing, and why is it talking to me?!" And the answer is that Quiddo is actually the abandoned quiche from Waterfall from Undertale, isn't that crazy?! I don't know why they're talking to you, though.

Now, why would the quiche be in sans'? Mostly because of the thought of Sans being the person that left it in waterfall, and if sans stays the same in DELTARUNE as in UNDERTALE, then maybe that quiche still exists somewhere? Idk. And also i didn't wanted to make another oc for the skelebros house or the graveyard (the only other place in deltarune with a bench in it, i think).

Now, about their design: In this form, it's pretty simple actually. The head has a flower-like quiche shape, and it's slightly melting to represent that they've been there for a LONG time. As for the torso, i tried to include the bench the quiche is originally found at in their design, and so their legs and torso have a similar color and shape to a bench.

Their super form design: Now, this is where it gets somewhat interesting. As it's design is a reference of what i think are the three main characters in Undertale that are aware of timelines and resets; Frisk/Chara, Flowey, and Sans. It goes with the silly idea of 'what if Deltarune remembered what you did in Undertale?' sort of stuff, and so i made this amalgamation made out of sugar, echo flowers, and ANGER; Quiller.

Note: Tbh with you guys, i don't usually design monsters of this kind very often, so it's design is susceptible to changes. Perhaps some of you can give some ideas?

What is your favorite video game? (Or other type of game?)

Ok, so this is one I can never answer with just one definitive game, so I'll give you the list in no particular order!

Celeste: I mean, what can I say? It tells a deeply relatable story about overcoming your own mental mountain, and the absolute battle that can be on the way. The ups, the downs, the even further downs... then that stubborn climb back up. Plus, it's got really tight and well put together platforming mechanics, really good level design and art direction, and one of my favorite video game soundtracks ever.

Night in the Woods: This is the game that actually helped me get through a really, really bad depressive rut a few years back. You're put into the shoes of someone who struggles with a lot of aspects of life, and forced not only to confront yourself, but explore other peoples struggles at the same time, and the concept of growing up when you never really had the chance to be a kid. It fundamentally changed my perception on death. I'll never forget the line "When I die, I want it to hurt"

SLARPG: 4 gay ass furries go on an adventure, kiss, and learn deeply important lessons about themselves. It was kinda destined to be a game I loved. It's got a beautiful art style, a soundtrack I've listened to more times than I can count, and just a really lovable cast of characters. Plus, I'm real partial to notably sapphic furry women (and traditional JRPGs)

Terraria: I feel like being one of the only games I've sank over 1000 hours into makes this a pretty notable pick among my favs. Solid mechanics, one of my favorite games for mobility progression and tech, a good host of real fun boss fights, pretty much everything you could ask for! I do think there are times when the game just steps it the hell up and progression slows down a good bit (notably after plantera), but it's a seriously fun game to come back to and play every once in a while!

Undertale Yellow: Oh my GOSH, this game is too good for its own dang good!!! It's a fanmade prequel game to Undertale that tells the lovingly crafted stories of an all new cast of characters (bar like- two beasts who overlap), expands and explores Undertale's worldbuilding, has a REALLY GOOD soundtrack that's been stuck in my head for weeks, and just... more of what gave Undertale its magic. Having seen all three endings (and the neutral one being the most compelling somehow??), it's just amazing what the team behind the game managed to pull off. It's a passion project on a scale I've never really seen before.

Some honorable mentions: Beat Saber, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, Armored Core 6, Ghost Giant, Enter the Gungeon, and Minecraft

Ooooh that's a good one. I don't play a lot of games IRL so. Just mostly the genre here

Jin - Hmmmmm, I can see Jin using video games as an outlet for their anger when they were younger. Essentially those beat em up games that don't really require strategy and just beating things to a pulp. It's very cathartic.

Kohaku - Doesn't usually play video games, but she would like those survival/scavenger games. She already does it irl, so it comes easy to her.

Kenji - I think Kenji has a wide variety of tastes when it comes to video games, despite his appearance. I think the only thing he doesn't really care for or stomach are those war games n horror. His top faves would be jrpg and general turn based rpg's ( so think omori and undertale). Racing games are also very good.

Aiko - Fighting games,I think. Like smash, or street fighter. She would really enjoy those.

Beryl - Beryl has two older siblings, one of which is a more avid gamer than they are, so any equivalent to Smash or Mario kart is something they would absolutely enjoy. They have a guilty pleasure of beating the others in said games: you can't blame her! She's a younger sibling, they deserve some victories.

Danica - Indie horror is a favorite, surprising no one. But she actually tends to lean towards more cozy games. Think stardew valley or animal crossing.

Kiran - Puzzle games are something that Kiran gravitates to! But if I'm being honest, he's more likely to listen to video games soundtracks while working ( or napping) than sit down and play a game. He's more of a watcher than doer.

Alexis and Elliot - they have most experience with group party games ( with Cheren and Bianca) and absolutely love rhythm/ music games. Surprising no one lol.

Eva - Hmm. This one's hard. I have no doubt that Eva plays video games but not sure if I can place a personal favorite for her. She kinda just goes with whatever.

Wayne - Anything sci-fi. This kinda goes for movies too. Specifically stuff with cool aliens n stuff.

Jude - Horror lol. Indie horror, they think those are more compelling than triple A games.

Dante - Also horror, but don't tell anyone.

Ames - Hmmmmm. Another hard one. Really shows my lack of knowledge here lol. The best I can describe it is like ...funky? Funky little games, if that makes sense.Ream weird but endearing ones. Maybe Undertale like her brother. Yeah.

Ray - is very good at puzzle games, but also games in general??? The type of guy who you call to do a hard level for you. Actually now that I think about it, he would like Hollow Knight.

Naomi- Cozy relaxing games! She would find games like stardew valley amusing.

Carol - MYSTERY GAMES!!!! Ghost trick would be a fav. Also otome games, ironically.

Luca - I think he would really like the pokemon equivalent to Mario kart!

R.B- Doesn't exactly know, she's still figuring herself out in terms of her likes and dislikes. Penny and Luca are helping her with that. Right now she just goes with whatever.

Oh hey! I saw that you're a fan of Okage: Shadow King? That game always interested me, but I haven't really gotten into it. Can you tell me about it?

It's been a long time since I've played it, but going from memory it was a unique little RPG with a cool art style and an amazing soundtrack! The story setup was that you play as Ari, who is the mute protagonist but in a canon way in that he is overlooked by everyone as if he's not even there to begin with because he is very thin shadowed. If I am remembering correctly Ari wants to go to the circus but his father, who found a cool jar, makes him stay home and listen to him ramble about his cool jar while Ari's sister gets to go to the circus. By the time Ari can get away the circus is over. He ends up finding his sister being attacked by a ghost who curses her to only speak in Pig-latin. The family acts like this is the end of the world for their precious daughter so they decide to use the jar to summon the devil (Or the devil's dapper little butler James) who basically tells them "Sealed in the Jar is Evil King Stan the Evil king of Evil. He can save your daughter from only speaking Piglatin but one of you have to sell King Stan your body, soul, and loyalty to get him to do it and in the end Ari is chosen because he is so thin shadowed that Stan can possess his shadow without being overshadowed himself.

Stan then Cures Ari's sister but turns her shadow pink, Just because, and the next day Stan decides to take over Ari's hometown, which doesn't go over well because the town thinks Stan is Hilarious so he throws a little hissy fit because "Nooooo I'm the evil king of evil not joy and laughteeeeeeer! STAAAAAAAHP!! D:<"

They end up learning that while Stan was sealed in the Jar a bunch of people stole his power, becoming a group of "Evil Kings" themselves and so Stan makes Ari, who is his slave and Stan is very possessive of (God I wish I had been a shipper when I played that because I'm feeling a ship coming on with this nostalgia) head out to hunt down the evil kings to get Stan's power back so he can regain his true non-shadow form and start spreading evil and conquering the world.

Ari's parents take it very well. Like in a "Mom! Stan and I are heading out to spread darkness and evil across the land in a cloud of malevolence and terror!" "Okay honey! Have a great time!" way. Along the way Ari picks up an array of party members who join for various reasons, like a scientist who studies ghosts, or a knight who has vowed to kill Stan but can't until he is whole again so has to help stop the evil kings! The story starts off like a simple rpg but gets deeper and gets kinda a more undertale meta-style twist later on. But that's not important, what is is that everything that comes out of Stan's mouth is golden!

I’m just thinking about this right now because I’m seeing Undertale and Deltarune on my dash but like

As a teen I was (gasp) a filthy Homestuck fan. And all the pathetic shit that came with it. I loved the Striders and Karkat and Nepeta. I loved the weird and random and crazy storytelling and the simple replicable art style.

Most of all, though, I loved the music.

Weird part to like about it I guess, but gosh is Homestuck’s music awesome. I’m the type of person who needs background noise at All Times, and at one point that led me to listening to Homestuck’s soundtracks as I did chores.

I’d notice, “Huh. This ‘toby “Radiation” fox’ dude shows up a lot.” And that apparently stuck with me. Because when I heard there was a game coming out with music by toby fox, and the game itself made by him too? I immediately needed to see this game.

To say Undertale is important to me is a major fucking understatement. I love all of the characters. All of them. The music is, of course, absolutely gorgeous. The game is both hilarious and heartwarming.

And this was my first game with a nonbinary protagonist. Or any other nonbinary character (which there are a few others). This was when I was just figuring out that I was nonbinary (you can imagine how I flipped when I found out ‘there’s a word for that feeling!?’) and my character(s) and other characters being referred to as they and them with absolutely no fanfare...it meant a lot.

And the characters? I really can’t talk about how much I love them. Toriel is my mom in my heart. I have made her Butterscotch Cinnamon Pie and it makes me so happy. Napstablook is just the friggin cutest and their shy awkwardness was so relatable I love them. Sans and Papyrus can always make me laugh. Sans got my lore-brain spinning and Papyrus was always there and always supportive. Monster Kid is the most precious little doof and they deserve the world. Undyne is a fucking badass and when she realizes you aren’t awful she is just the most fun to be around. Temmie is great (and also check her animations out on Youtube she’s so frickin cute and amazingly talented just do yourself that favor) and the music reminds me of Rugrats for some reason. Alphys is a fucking weeb with social anxiety and boy do I ever relate to that. Muffet has the coolest design and one of the more challenging and fun battles and she’s just so gorgeous to my love of the gothic lolita aesthetic. Mettaton is a fucking romp. That reveal of the EX form is magnificent. Asgore--I admit I’m not the biggest fan of him, but I always felt bad for him. He was a good guy trying to do what’s right for his people and it was hard and it hurts that you have to fight him (also that was a fucking twist gotdam).

And Asriel...my frickin baby. He is my brother and I love him. I just want to give him hugs and snuggles and pet his head and make everything better and just ow my heart.

This man, this dog, made a whole-ass game. Not alone, but like, he did so much of it.

And he just keeps frickin going.

When Deltarune came out as a “Survey Program” I downloaded it and was blown away. I cannot tell you how much I loved it. I fell in love with Seam and I listened to The World Revolving and every possible remix on loop.

(Unfortunately I haven’t played Chapter 2 yet because right after I got Chapter 1, my computer died!

and the executive dysfunction didn’t help either. But I’ll get to it I swear)

AND THEN

So I hate SWSH for a number of reasons, (*coughdexcough*) but Pokemon has always been part of my life. And while not the best song in the soundtrack (which is Battle! Gym Leader and you can fight me on that) his contribution, the Battle Tower Battle Theme, is a bop and I love it.

AND THEN A-FUCKING-GAIN

I legitimately CANNOT WAIT for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and to have toby’s music in my ear while my Fidough wrecks everyone with it’s Flower Power.

And then on top of this, this fucker plays into the meme culture because of course he does

top 5 albums? 💛

 *cracks knuckles* let’s GO. In no order:

1. Planet Her, by Doja Cat just a solid album, zero skips, every banger bangs, and the slow songs are beautiful. Perfect way for her to showcase doing more “serious” music and solidifying her persona as an artist. You can just tell she’s in her bag with this one. 

2. Burd, by Wilma Vritra it’s experimental, it’s rap, it’s deep house, it’s jazz, it’s...a lot of things. It’s an incredible collab between two very different artists who made a 40 minute masterpiece. Another no skip album, unlike anything else I could try to compare it to. They did a follow up album, Grotto, that is just as good, but different. 

3. To Pimp a Butterfly. I don’t need to write a paragraph about this one. 

4. Trees etc. by naran ratan is one of my favorite things period. It’s not an album I really recommend because it’s kinda weird lol but I could listen to all 22:22 of it on repeat indefinitely. It’s electronica mixed with jazz - sounds like a very modern, creepy RPG. If you like Mort Garson or the Undertale soundtrack give it a listen 

5. Turn off the Lights by Kim Petras. It’s Halloween so I’m legally obligated to list this one

oh my gosh i love you’re writing so much. like, i can just tell you put a lot of thought into what you write and that you really enjoy doing it. i don’t really know how to explain it, but your writing always just has such a nice feel to it and it’s always so comforting to read :)

First of all...Thank you so much! 💓

Like- I honestly don't consider myself that much of a good writer, I can tell that the way I express myself through words has gotten better ever since I've started dedicating myself to it, but I always felt...I don't know, like it was still pretty amateurish and I'm just not sure of how to grow out of this phase.

You can imagine that writing in a language that's not even your own is no easy job, and it's not like I've taken some specialised writing courses or such, I'm still in high school lol. But I'm glad one can see my attempts to put effort into it nevertheless :)

It's nothing but a mere hobby for me, something I do to kind of keep myself entertained aside from playing the piano or spending 4 hours in a row listening to the Undertale soundtrack lmao.

Although I am pretty passionate about it, and it's a relief to know that it conveys such a nice feeling for the ones that actually take their time to give my work a chance.

i think the real beauty of toby fox's work is what one youtuber i recently watched pointed out: if you know the leitmotifs, you can literally read each song like a book. it's why you get youtubers who have only played neutral routes listening to "hopes and dreams" and going "isn't this Home? and...the theme kind of reminds me of ASGORE. And there's that melody of Flowey's....IS ASRIEL FLOWEY?" and this is the real potential of leitmotifs, especially in video games. of course most people who use leitmotifs use them somewhat in this way, but there are zero songs on the UNDERTALE soundtrack that don't link back up with one or more other ones. If you know what to listen for, you can picture what's going on at any possible moment in the game. people who have never played the game can listen to ASGORE and go "this feels like a battle neither party wants to fight, but for some reason is forced to anyway." i've seen at least four or five people listen to Battle Against a True Hero and go "this doesn't sound like the kind of battle theme you get when the player's in the right." you can read them. they tell the story all by themselves. it's so wonderful.
