Weekly Reading List - Christmas Special

I have a confession to make. I’m usually not a big fan of Christmas fics, because more often than not, they are Americanized, ignoring the way Japanese celebrate this holiday, and well, it’s often self-indulgent fluff, occasionally with slightly OOC characters. 

But after the absolute hell of a year 2020 has been, both in the manga, but also in the real scary big world, with many of us spending the holidays far away from our loved ones, we all deserve the self-indulgence of pure tooth-rotting fluff, and immerse ourselves into the warmth of love, friends and family feels. So this list was made in the spirit of curling up under a warm blanket with some hot chocolate or rum-spiked eggnog, and indulge yourself in that fuzzy feeling, knowing even if it seems far away right now, we’ll get there again. And if being happy right now feels like something that happens to other people, remember that letting yourself immerse into the joys of an imaginary world and live vicariously through your emotional comfort characters is self-care you deserve.

And if I missed some of your favorites, don’t hesitate to add your recommendations or make your own list to help spread the Christmas cheer.

This one comes first and is always the one that always comes to mind when I think of my favorite todobaku stories. Maybe because the vivid descriptions won’t get out of my head, or because it’s about music and Baku has a bike and there’s this one line ("It's because I'm gonna figure out a way past all this fuckin' ice," Bakugou says, jabbing Shouto straight in the chest with one finger. "But I ain't about that sappy shit, so I'm not looking to melt it or anything. I'm gonna crack straight through."), long story short it’s my favorite and I’ve reread it a couple times

Summary:  Like so many things that had to do with Shouto, the question took Bakugou entirely by surprise. “Do you think I’m pretty?”

Summary:  Katsuki shakes his head with a sigh and an unbidden smile. Shouto's always been like an overexcited kid when it came to cats; Katsuki should've known he didn't stand a chance against them in Shouto's first visit to a cat cafe.

Summary: He's not a vengeful person, really, he's not.

But him and Bakugou have started this little on-going war of theirs back in middle school when they were 10 years old and Todoroki had accidentally—if you got Todoroki drunk enough and fed his ego well enough he would, in fact, admit that it was very much on purpose—accidentally fed Bakugou's limited edition All Might magazine to his cat.

Summary:  With half his sketchbook filled with drawings of the guy, Katsuki wondered if he’s already crossed the line of being insanely creepy. They’ve never spoken, and he honestly only knew the person’s name was Todoroki Shouto because of role call in class. Shouto was just… so unique to look at with his half and half appearance. It was hard for Katsuki’s eyes not to get drawn to him. Not to mention they shared several classes, so if Katsuki ever got bored and felt like drawing something, there he was.

He's already started walking away when Shouto blurts out, “See you tomorrow?”

Bakugou shoots him a smirk over his shoulder, as if to say, Duh.

Shouto stands and stares at his retreating back, and the thought of kissing him pounds along with the beat of his heart.

Summary: Midoriya is honestly unsure what’s worse: the tragic fact that Todoroki Shouto can make anything look objectively incredible or the fact Kacchan has six versions of the exact same photograph saved onto his camera roll.

Nobody saves a photo that many times by accident.

Kacchan set the bar, Todoroki raised it. That is not a good thing.

Summary: “Your hair looks real fucking nice.”

“I thought it was about time I grew it out,” Todoroki says, something wistful caught in his voice. “You were always saying I should.”

That’s true. And Bakugou is satisfied to know he was right about it looking good, but it’s not like he can share that with the fucking class anymore.

Summary: The breeze that sifted gently through a golden sea of tall, dry grass brought the tiny spike of a different scent. An inconspicuous little prickle down the spine, barely even worth paying attention to. Something no one else would even imagine being able to notice.

But Bakugou did.

Summary: Shoto Todoroki hated Katsuki Bakugou. And he had plenty of reasons to do so.

But he didn't know that how things can change for the two of them who saw nothing but trouble in each other's presence and life altogether. Katsuki was a trouble from the first time Shoto heard his name, to the first day he met the man.

Rating: E

→ On Hot Blondes and Drunken Hookups by Crossfire. (In-Progress 4/?) I love this so so much.

Summary: “I’m Bakugou. What’s your name, Pretty Boy?”

Shouto looks at the drink in his hand, then back to the beautiful blonde boy, then back to the drink and downs it in one go, ignoring the slight burn as it slides down his throat, and while it would have been more suave to appear unaffected, he gives his head a little shake. He takes a quick breath and forces the words out before he has a chance to realize what a massive mistake this all is.

“Hot blondes I want to bang can call me Shouto.”

→ Tick Tick Boom by Ajaxthegreat. (In-Progress 6/?) THIS is so good, I’m in love.

Summary: An exhausted socially awkward violin prodigy and a deaf punk rock drummer walk into a bar.

Summary:  The one where Deku watches Bakugou take Todoroki and their exhibitionist kink is unlocked.

Summary: Some undercover agents got hooked on drugs. Went full Stockholm Syndrome, flipped and joined up with the other side. As Bakugou’s palm went flat over Todoroki’s navel and dove beneath his closed zipper, Todoroki started to understand just how easy it might be to go rogue.

Summary: This particular fuckup begins when he saves a cat from a demon in a sketchy alley.

Well, maybe slightly before that when his esteemed hedge-witch mentor turned out to be an incubus who coincidentally turned him and his stupid nerdy neighbor into incubi.

Or maybe when he was born to a non-magic family, but early on developed minor magical inclinations that turned out to be not-so-minor and kind-of-hugely-destructive.

Wherever this fuckup was born, it’s culminated as follows: Bakugou has been an incubus for one hundred and twenty-two days, seven hours, and thirty-six minutes, has not had a single successful feed, and is essentially slowly starving to death. His mentor is suspiciously MIA and that stupid shitty nerd has managed to secure himself a two-person harem so it’s just Bakugou, starving. To death. Slowly.

Summary: Bakugou is a detective trying to solve a case that's been open for months. He ends up in a town and meets a man who could be his undoing...

Todoroki wasn't expecting the blonde at the bar to leave him wanting more...

Shouto hadn’t realized he was missing out, being so used to what he knew; going through the motions, a means to an end. His life for the last few years had revolved around mediocre sex as a way to abate constant desire, always at the forefront of his mind.

Unhealthy coping mechanisms are easier to hide when you aren't screwing your ex-classmate.

Summary: Ask anyone in Tokyo and they’ll tell you the same thing. That the No.1 Pro Hero Todoroki Shoto is the perfect hero. He’s kind to everyone, always the first to arrive on a crime scene, always the calm and collected hero everyone wants him to be.

It was ironic how things happened to lead Shoto to his current situation. Him moaning and shuddering like a teenager, clinging to the strong perfect body of the most wanted villain in Japan, Ground Zero.

Summary: “Yeah, man, okay!” The guy holds up his hands in surrender and Shouto shoots him another apologetic look. “I really didn't know you guys were married! I didn't see a ring!”

“Oh,” Katsuki says. He frowns hard for a minute and then grabs Shouto by the arm to whisk him away to his table with Izuku and Kirishima to guard him or sniff him or whatever weird territorial thing he wants to do.

TBH, Anon, I’ve been deep into SnK lately, so I’m not as current in my tdbk reading as I would like to be. But yes, RECS! I’ve got some great ones. As always, these are fics that I‘ve enjoyed, but YMMV. I’m not making any claims that these are the “best” tdbk fics or anything. Just have fun!

TheConcept of Us (E, WIP) by @castiiron - As per usual, Todoroki reaches upto brush hair away from Bakugou’s face before kissing him back. As per usualthey clean up lazily, Bakugou in charge of rearranging the sheets to a suitablesleeping position. As per usual, Todoroki spends too long in the shower,dripping wet hair onto Bakugou’s warm skin when he returns to slide into bednext to him.

As per usual Todoroki mutters into the static silence. “We can’t keepdoing this.”

And as per usual Bakugou responds.

“I know.”

I’m taking a risk and including a fic that hasn’t beenupdated/finished in almost two years. But this is my favorite kind of TDBK –when their broken edges can’t seem to align no matter how much the two men try.This is one of those fics where Bakugou and Todoroki keep breaking each other’shearts, yet they can’t let go of each other. Here’s hoping the author decidesto return to the fic someday. I LOVE THIS FIC.

DirectWould be the Best Approach (E, 8.7K) by @bideroo - Would it kill you tobe honest? Apparently, two of UA's most stubborn students think so.

Although primarily known for her humor andrarest-of-the-rare pairs, Bideroo brings a softer touch to this TDBK gem.Bakugou and Todoroki don’t quite know how to telegraph their feelings after ahookup (described in another Bideroo fic -- Well, Who WOULDN’T beCurious?), resulting in them taking a – you guessed it – painfully indirectapproach to getting together. Soft and sweet. (Note: If you usually avoid ficswith an E rating, don’t give this a pass. There’s no sex or violence, and tbh,the author could have easily used a T rating.)

don’tyou go overanalyze (no need to theorize) (T, 3.5K) by @armedetective - Fivetimes someone asked Bakugou Katsuki if he was dating Todoroki Shouto, and onetime Todoroki answered the question for him.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a reincarnation fic, and Ialmost never read works that are written in all lowercase, but something aboutthis caught my eye. Each vignette is a teardrop full of love that transcendstime and space.

MyBrother-in-Law (T, 5.3K) by citrussunscreen- Fuyumi isn't sure about Bakugou Katsuki when she learns that Shouto startsdating him. There were still small spots of doubt in her heart even after theygot married. Fuyumi wishes she had learnt much earlier that her worries werefor naught. TodoBaku.

I don’t think I’ve ever done a rec list without includingsomething by TDRKBKGO. I love the way they write Todoroki so much! In this highschool AU series Todoroki is Bakugou’s sempai, and he doesn’t quite pick up onhis kouhai’s not-so-subtle signals until it’s almost too late. This fic givesmy heart joy.

TheSilence of the Yams (T, 5K) by dinosuns- The door closes, leaving Todoroki alone in the one place he has alwaysfelt a little lost in. In Bakugou’s absence, the kitchen seems to have becomemore mysterious and cryptic than before. The counter seems more vast, theutensils are elusive, the drawers harbour great secrets.

As Simple as a Fake Relationship and a Near Death Experience by @castiiron​ (TDBK) - sweet little fake-dating one-shot with a spin

 The Perfect Hand Holding Equation by bukkobukkorosu (TDBK) - charming one-shot, sort of crack, where Todoroki gets obsessed with holding Bakugou’s hand.

Hero name: Cramp Crusher by @ethydium​ (mostly brotps, with a hint of TDBKDK) - I love fics where class 1a uses Shouto’s quirks for mundane purposes and he finds simple joy in helping whatever way he can. 

Staring At The Sun by Zethsaire (BKDK brotp is the focus, the ship is KRBK) - it’s hard to find a Bakugou-apology fic that feels in character, and I think this fic handled it in a really excellent way that felt in character. Also, featuring Bakugou in therapy and deaf!Bakugou, which makes it a really delightful read.

Nameless in Dark Oblivion by pretentiousashell  (Dabi/Hawks, WIP) - I’m usually not a hotwings fan, but this fic drew me in with excellent characterization and world-building, following up on canon events in a way that coincide a lot with my personal HCs.

So, nobody asked for this, but I’m gonna do it anyways ‘cause I need to show everyone my BakuTodo top favorites of all times in no particular order  (this list only includes top!Bakugou and bottom!Todoroki for those that are NSFW). I’ll only post here fics from AO3.

The thing is that Bakugou knows how difficult it is to kill off a desert plant like aloe vera, which makes the Todoroki’s unassuming expression cut at Bakugou’s pride all the deeper than if he’d had openly looked down on Bakugou for managing the near impossible. Bakugou scowls as he looks at Todoroki looking at the poor, dying plant, and finds himself momentarily distracted from his silent complaining (just judge me already, dammit, it’s not like I don’t know this is pathetic) at the way that Todoroki juts his lower lip out slightly as he examines the aloe vera. Bakugou doesn't even bother to hide the fact that he’s blatantly checking Todoroki out as he rakes his gaze across Todoroki’s face and –

“Can I take it out?” Todoroki asks, breaking Bakugou’s concentration.

“What?” Bakugou says, having not actually paid attention to what Todoroki was asking.

This was just one of those nights. One of those nights, where the illogical seemed plausible and all natural, as if nothing else could’ve been more obvious.

Which was precisely why, Todoroki could be hardly perturbed by the presence of a certain Bakugou Katsuki in front of his door, wearing his default scowl, looking as if he had tons to say.

Todoroki looked up, after having apparently caused the untimely deaths of his three friends. Uraraka was doubled over, clutching her throat as bits of food sprayed from her wheezing mouth, Iida had somehow mini-Recipro Bursted his way through the floorboards and was struggling to get back out of the crater, and Midoriya… Midoriya looked like he needed an ambulance. Or an immediate blood transfusion at least, his face was so white.

Todoroki doesn't know what exactly he's done wrong in his life to somehow accidentally start dating Bakugou Katsuki, but he has. Yup, has he ever.

If there’s one thing that Katsuki hates, it’s parties. If there’s one thing he hates more than parties, it’s his friends thinking that goading him will get him to do what they want.

To be fair, it usually works, but there isn’t a goddamn person here he cares to swap spit with. He gets that they just graduated, it’s exciting or whatever, but is a make-out game necessary to celebrate that?

It had started off innocently enough Shouto supposes, raise a bunch of dragonlings who had taken a liking to him and followed him wherever he went, what he hadn't expected was for these dragonlings to ACTUALLY be Half Dragon-Half Humans who could transform once they reach maturity. Perhaps if he'd known this beforehand, he would have been able to avoid the trouble this information brings later on.

A faint tickling sensation under the bridge of his nose was all the warning he received before Bakugou gripped the lapels of his uniform and hauled him in. The scent of the Alpha's peaking rut shot through him like a bullet, ricocheting off his insides and settling to quiver at the bottom of his gut, still warm.

Cross- eyed, Todoroki wrinkled his nose where it nearly met his classmate’s. He should have expected that reaction, honestly.

Alpha Bakugou Katsuki is allergic to suppressants, and Todoroki Shouto is a Beta with a grudge. Together they strike a deal that swiftly becomes more than either of them had bargained for.

Yeah, I guess I was.” He waits for Bakugou to snap something back, when he doesn’t, Todoroki continues, “Then again, he taught me everything I know. I wouldn’t have made it as far as I did if he hadn’t quite literally drilled it into me.” Bakugou sits up then, stretching his arms over his head before standing and moving back to his own makeshift bed. “You’ve got your own flair, I’ve seen it,” he says nonchalantly, surprisingly reassuring for something that came from a mouth like his. “You’re different to him.” Maybe it was something meant offhandedly, something Bakugou offered to him without much insight on Todoroki’s situation. Yet, until that moment, he hadn’t realised how much he had needed to hear it. How do you divorce yourself from someone that made you who you are, that raised you to their design, with the idea that you’d fall into their shoes? Todoroki hadn’t thought it was possible, to shake the feeling he was always going to be a clone of his father.

Favorite aspect of Todoroki’s character: I love my boy, from his resolute character to his forced maturity. His steadfast opinions and silly anxieties. He has so much room to grow and I love exploring and watching him change. He deserves the world.
