Hey Sergle, how does one learn how to draw? Like, I am in my 20s, can barely draw a stick figure, and feel overwhelmed whenever I try to look up tutorials. Do you have any advice on how to start?

my Unprofessional advice on how to start in earnest, is to do it the way little kids do when they start learning to draw! which is to not approach it as learning at all. sitting down and scribbling out whatever comes to mind, reading a book or watching a movie and trying to copy the way the characters are drawn. draw a page full of cats. do it while you watch tv. doing all that w/o the Grown Up impulse to be embarrassed that you're new at a skill.

Hey y'all! Weird question time again! Do any of you have advice for where to buy good paper copies of road maps, specifically of the eastern united states? I'm thinking like the east half of Tennessee and parts of the surrounding states. Some context: I saw that post about using our phones for everything being a single point of failure (true) and my dad is very hard to find presents for but appreciates being prepared for emergencies (he spent most of his 20s as a firefighter in wildfire territory) so I think he'd appreciate having paper copies of maps he could like keep in the car in case his phone ever doesn't work. The problem: I do not drive, and I have absolutely zero idea what features make paper maps easier or more difficult to use, so idk how to narrow it down to which one(s) I should get him

there is not enough 92sies sprace. i know what you all are doing. 92sies fans did not get on their knees and pick up crumbs to ship spot and race for the rest of us to run off with it and apply it to livesies where not only do they not even directly interact, but fanon prefers because they find the actors more attractive, and then proceed to boil their characters down to 1-2 traits each and ship them in a weird almost f/tishy "dumb feminine man x angry masculine man" way. guys this is a class war not the yaoi war.

The most annoying thing about jewelry making is that I have never found a string or coated wiring that's easier to use or more durable than the spool of clear plastic fishing line my grandpa gave me when I was ten (because I wanted to make something or other, and he didn't have any nicer string). Idk how to do fishing knots but I can use metal crimps on it without breaking the string, which is nice. And I think that if I don't use it up, that spool will outlast the heat death of the universe. The only downside is that it won't stretch, but I've never liked the stretchy thread anyway, it ages poorly.

He's a neck pillow, and I am sure he's meant to be modelled after Haku from "Spirited Away", but my mind screamed "DRAGONJI!!!" when I first saw him. My partner was like "Put your Lan ribbon on him when you get him," so I did.

(Also thank goodness for a good neck pillow; my old one was giving me headaches.)

i’ve been looking at it like neither ichiro nor nemu have had the opportunity to explore who they are and grow up as themselves because they really aren’t at a place to do so

for ichiro, he’s crafted himself to being the perfect big bro he thinks his brothers need. like, he’s so focused on not being anything his brother’s don’t need it took nemu unlocking buried childhood memory #896 for him to recall a food he enjoyed enough to call a fav 😭😭😭 in the tdd manga, you see a lot of ichiro’s less than savoury sides of his personality, his hotheadedness, his very brash way of speaking, and a touch of ruthlessness. it’s all facets of himself that helped drive jiro and saburo away so he buried them once he got the chance to be the ‘adult’ figure in his brother’s lives out of a fear he’d drive them away again

nemu, on the other hand, is doing great lol unfortunately, she just got brainwashed just as she was coming into herself. however, because of she views herself as weak, she’s blind to the fact she’s always stood her ground in the face of wrongdoing. her standing up to otome??? her standing up to samatoki’s brand of violence??? her not even flinching when terrorists threatened to kill her??? that strength’s always been in her character but since she had to rely on her brother (and that reliance led to fuel samatoki’s violent lifestyle), she doesn’t see that about herself and only views herself as a damsel

I came up with another Tenzo HC that I think you'll like. We all know Tenzo likes reading about architecture, but what if he's also really into flowers and their meanings. So like Petunias are supposed to represent anger or being angry at someone. And then what if... Since ANBU just emotionally stunts our poor Shinobi, what if the way he learns to best communicate is by handing people the relevant flowers to express his feelings.

And we all love that HC of him growing flowers, what if the relevant flowers pop up because he associates that feeling with that flower? Like when it's a really really intense feeling, they just start growing.

Also, i know i share my HC with you a lot but i just feel like you always appreciate them <3

its so funny that u mention this bc just a day or two before i recieved it i was writing yamato and felt compelled to have him use a little flower symbolism! I didn't have him growing any flowers tho, just...ominously looming symbolism clinging onto a heavy thought.

i think this can be a really interesting HC to play with, especially when we consider how nebulous "flower language" is—like, for example the red spider lily has, apparently, the meaning of "elope with me" over here in the US, but in japan, the red spider lily is heavily associated with death, lovers separating, etc-you will see it in anime very often, i remember there was one i watched as a kid (hellgirl, i think?) that had them Everywhere and very ominously

and then there's cases where the flower is Supposed to have a meaning, but bc of how its practically used it has a different or even sometimes contradictory meaning,

for example the lily, in christian spaces the white lily is generally supposed to be indicative of innocence—which is probably why its used at so many funerals (symbolizing god washing out the sins after death and making the soul innocent once more, or something) but the fact that its used at so many funerals means that most people i know, when they see a lily, don't think "aw, how sweet..." we tend to go "oh god. the funeral flower." some even can't stand the smell of it

one of my friends gifted me a piece of jasmine incense he had got once for the same reason, that was a Strongly Funereal smell for him, but it was not for me.

then, there's also the individual meanings that flowers hold for people—

this is jewelweed, one of the most important flowers to me personally! it's native to most swampy, moist areas of the USA, it grows very fast, and tall, and spreads really quickly.

when i was a kid, we'd call this stuff "poppers" on account of how when you touch the green, dangling seed-pods, they would pop! like literally, they would explode, launching their seeds everywhere! here's a video of that.

I'm told that in the language of flowers In General, they represent motherly love, but to me, because of how i played with them as a kid, they will always specifically represent childish joy and wonder, as well as a certain amount of resilience due to how quickly and how well they take over an area (say hello to one of the few plants that can take on the invasive garlic mustard!)

this all to say, the associations between meanings and plants could be something that's really fun to play with—some of his meanings could be gathered from books, some of them could be gathered from the cultural knowledge he has access to, and more still could be developed from his own personal experiences with plants.

i'm not sure where i fall on how much yamato would internalize flower language...or i guess even what kind of flowers hed care about? i see him as somebody who tries to be, first and foremost, practical...

flower language is very poetic and mysterious, but there's practicality in mystery too—he's a ninja, after all, (and, ur right, given Anbu he seems to be a fairly repressed ninja at that) using symbols in order to communicate certain feelings could be very practical, if there are things that are difficult to say...

the only thing is that the person receiving the flowers from him would have to also know what they meant, in order for this to be practical...or there'd have to be a shared understanding of things related to the flowers.

I had one of those Moments today while socializing with a small group of friends I've made among faculty at my university (pretty much the only friends I've made since moving here, actually), who are a very SJ-ideology-right-down-the-line bunch as is most often the case in academia (they're all in the humanities, which doesn't help). The two most aggressively SJ of them, who frequently make references to how racist restrictive immigration policies are and how racist everything is in general, are a couple from Canada. Today they were ranting about the history of demographic issues in Quebec. I know next to nothing about this, but I understand from them that many decades ago the French spoken in Quebec was in danger of being supplanted by English and so measures were taken to get more immigration from French-speaking countries, then when that turned out to include a bunch of African or otherwise non-white countries the government went, "Wait, no, we didn't mean those kinds of people" and managed to turn this into a large influx of French people, mainly from Paris, instead. But the problem with that is that Parisians are used to paying tons of rent (because, well, Paris) and so were willing to live at a much higher cost than was the standard in Quebec, eventually raising rent for everyone there. Those two friends were vehemently denouncing this trend and the harm it did to the Quebecois who were already there; at one point one of them said that she "hated" the Parisians in Quebec for this.

And I was sitting there thinking, "Isn't this, in economic terms, just a variation on one of the main basic cases American conservatives make against immigration? Which I know according to you just entirely boils down to hating darker-skinned people, but if you listen to the genuine concerns some of the anti-immigration folks have, it's about how people from a lot of less privileged countries are used to lower wages so they'll accept a bunch of menial jobs for lower wages than Americans are willing to get for those jobs, and then the immigrants will cause wages to go down for everyone. In this case, instead of talking about how little people are willing to be paid, it's about how much people are willing to pay, but your 'hating' Parisian immigrants for what they're doing to the economy seems to be a very similar principle, no?"

And of course, as almost always, I kept my thoughts to myself, because I value not injecting tension between myself and some of the very few true friends I have in this geographic region.
