charlie conway 🎈
for one of charlie’s surprise birthday parties, the ducks all pitched in to get one of those party rooms and a birthday cake at their local ice rink. they also accidentally got too many balloons so the room was just filled by the time they were all blown up. charlie thought this was hilarious and still considers it his favourite birthday

Connie: so what’s it like being Adams’s boyfriend?
Charlie: Once I asked him for a glass of water while he was mad at me and he brought me a glass of ice and said, “wait.”

Holiday Hero
I am not sure what to title this so I am open to suggestions. This is based on an ask I received a while back. About Adam having Charlie as his number 1 on his phone's speed dial. I just added some Christmas flair. Enjoy!
Adam shivered and pulled his jacket tighter around his body. Maybe if he knew where he was he could find a place to outlast the snowstorm. This was the last time he would drive in a snowstorm. Of course, how was he to know his car would die on one of the back roads near the cabin? Maybe he should have gone with his parents when they left. Adam sighed and pulled out his cell phone. He only had 10% battery left. So he could only make one call. He hoped the person picked up. Adam's hands shook slightly as he dialed the number.
“Come on, pick up, pick up,” He whispered into the receiver as the phone rang, “Charlie, please..”
“Conway resident!” Adam sighed in relief as he heard Charlie’s cheerful voice, “Charlie speaking!”
“Hey,” Adam started hesitantly, “Are you busy?”
“Banksie?” Charlie asked, “Never too busy for you what’s up?”
“Um…I am…my car…I am stuck,” Adam explained.
“Stuck?” Charlie inquired, “What do you mean?”
“My car died on the way up to my family’s cabin,” Adam recounted, “I don’t know where I am and my phone is almost dead.”
Adam was met with silence. He feared his phone had died.
“Charlie?” Adam asked.
“I’m here,” Charlie reassured him, “I am grabbing my things, I am coming to get you.”
“Charlie, you don’t even know where I am, I don’t even know where I am,” Adam argued.
“You take the same route every time you go to the cabin,” Charlie reasoned, “I will just drive that way and I’ll run across you.”
“Charlie, that silly,” Adam began to argue, “I only called in hopes that you could get in contact with my parents.”
“And let you freeze?!” Charlie argued, “No, I am coming to get you.”
Adam sighed, there was no arguing with Charlie Conway.
“Fine, but be careful,” Adam insisted.
“Of course,” Charlie said rolling his eyes
“Look carefully cause my lights aren’t working,” Adam replied.
“Will do, hang tight Banksie,” Charlie smirked, “See you soon.”
“Yeah, see you soon,” Adam reluctantly hung up the phone. All he could do now was wait. He really hoped Charlie wouldn’t speed. It wouldn’t be worth anything if they both were out of commission. At least it was no longer snowing so Adam wasn’t completely invisible. He rubbed his hands together for warmth. Adam may live in Minnesota but that didn’t mean he ever got used to the cold. Actually, despite being a hockey player, he hated being cold. Yet, you weren’t really cold when you had so much gear on.
Adam kept a close eye on his phone. His battery was almost dead. What would he do if it died and Charlie didn’t find him? He wondered how quickly you could freeze in a car. Then again maybe he would worry himself to death before then. Adam must have been panicking for a decent time because he didn’t notice the red sedan stop behind him. Until Charlie knocked softly at the window.
Adam hurried to unlock and open the door. He couldn’t see through the glass but he hoped it was actually Charlie. Adam let out a sigh of relief as he saw his best friend.
“Hey, ready to go?” Charlie grinned.
“Yes, I am freezing,” Adam replied, as he unbuckled, “Can you grab the presents in the back?”
“Yeah, the car is unlocked,” Charlie nodded, “Go warm up.”
Adam didn’t need to be told twice. He sped to the waiting car, slipping a few times on ice before finally making it to the passenger door. Adam sighed contently when he opened the door and the warm air hit his face. Adam hurried into the car and shut the door. His hands ached slightly from the temperature change. Yet, Adam was overjoyed, at least he hadn’t lost anything to frostbite.
Soon Charlie joined him in the car, “I put the presents in the trunk.”
“Thank you,” Adam smiled.
“Oh and I called your mom before I left,” Charlie noted, “I told her I was gonna bring you back to my house.”
“You are?” Adam asked.
Charlie nodded, “Your dad will call a tow and have them pick up your car tomorrow.”
“My parents aren’t going to be happy I missed Christmas,” Adam groaned.
“They should be happy you are alive,” Charlie replied, “I can take you up tomorrow.”
“No, it is Christmas and you need to spend it with your mom,” Adam reasoned, “My mom and dad will deal.”
“Well, I guess you’ll be spending Christmas with us then, Banksie,” Charlie grinned.
“I have a key to my house,” Adam reasoned, “I’ll be ok.”
“Nonsense, my mom loves you,” Charlie waved the notion off, “Besides she would be horrified if she found out you were alone on Christmas.”
Adam sighed, arguing with Charlie was futile. However, arguing with Casey was damn near impossible. He just hoped it wasn’t too much of a bother.
“Fine, just as long as I don’t have to be out in the cold anymore,” Adam relented.
“Good,” Charlie grinned as he buckled in, “Your car died about halfway between the cabin and my house.”
“How ironic,” Adam mused, “Can we go now?”
Charlie snorted and started the car, “Of course, Banksie.”
They drove in silence for a while before Charlie decided to broach the subject.
“Why did you call me?” Charlie asked, “Why not your parents?”
Adam was surprised by the question. He almost didn’t know himself. He just trusted Charlie would answer.
“I knew you’d be there,” Adam said matter-of-factly. It was the truth mostly. He also knew Charlie would be kinder to him in this instance. His mother would fret over him relentlessly and his father would question why the car died. He would ask why Adam didn’t check it before he left. Adam didn’t know which option was worse, but he definitely preferred Charlie over either of them.
“Of course,” Charlie laughed, “I will always be there for you.”
“Good to know,” Adam mumbled. He could feel his cheeks heat up and he knew it wasn’t from the car heater.
****
Casey was waiting for them when they arrived at Charlie’s apartment. She pulled Adam into a warm embrace. This banished the last bit of cold from his bones.
“I’m sorry for the intrusion,” Adam apologized.
Casey brushed the apology off with a wave of her hand, “You are never intruding Adam.”
“I tried to tell him that, too,” Charlie teased.
Casey chuckled, “Adam, you are always welcome.”
“Thank you,” Adam smiled.
“Come on,” Casey urged, “I have some hot cocoa waiting for you.”
Adam smiled gratefully. Casey Conway was a goddess among men.
So, Adam and Charlie drank hot cocoa. Adam called his mom and told her he was safe. At first, she was still worried. However, talking to Casey seemed to appease her. He promised he would call tomorrow morning.
Adam kept extra clothes at the cabin so he didn’t bother to pack a suitcase. Charlie laughed at the oversight and offered Adam his extra pair. Adam took them gratefully. When they had arrived Charlie insisted he carry in the gifts. So, they were seated comfortably under the Conway’s Christmas tree with the rest of the presents. All except two would remain wrapped until his family got back from the cabin.
Adam yawned as he followed Charlie upstairs to his room. Casey insisted they head to bed so Santa could come. Even though at 17 they both knew the truth, they didn’t argue with her. Adam was bone-tired and eager for sleep. Charlie insisted they share his bed. It was a tight fit for two teenage boys. However, Adam found it more cozy than restrictive.
“Thanks again for picking me up,” Adam whispered once they were securely in bed with the lights turned off.
“I’ll always come when you call,” Charlie promised, “Now go to sleep so Santa can come.”
Adam chuckled but nodded, “Night, Charlie.”
“Night, Adam,” Charlie whispered. Adam snuggled into the covers and fell asleep quickly. He doesn’t recall ever sleeping so soundly. Charlie’s warm body next to his was a comfort. It kept his dreams happy and his spirit light.
Casey allowed them to sleep in until 9. So Adam was awoken by a soft shake of his shoulder.
“Wakie, wakie Banksie!” Charlie grinned, “It’s Christmas morning and my mom is making French toast!”
Adam’s stomach grumbled softly at the mention of food. He yawned and stretched. Accidentally, punching Charlie softly in the cheek.
“Watch it,” Charlie laughed, “That’s intent to injury.”
“We’re not on the ice,” Adam replied opening his eyes, “Doesn’t count.”
“It so does,” Charlie retorted, “I guess I’ll forgive you since it’s Christmas.”
“You’re too kind,” Adam replied sarcastically.
“I know,” Charlie joked, “Now come on, you have some gifts downstairs.”
“I do?” Adam asked. Had Charlie gotten him a present or did Casey?
“You do, now come on,” Charlie urged, “Before the food gets cold.”
Adam rolled his eyes, “I’m coming, no need to break out the dramatics.”
Charlie snorted as he backed up. Allowing Adam to get up. He took his time following Charlie down to the kitchen.
“Morning, boys,” Casey greeted, “Come eat, and then we can open presents.”
“I will never argue with French Toast,” Charlie laughed and sat down. They ate in mostly silence. Adam didn’t dwell on how much he enjoyed the company.
Adam cleared the table after they had finished eating. He insisted on helping wash dishes before they moved to the living room. Charlie groaned but did help when Adam asked him to. It was quick work and soon they were all in the living room huddled around the tree.
“Now, Charlie was persistent that we get you something,” Casey explained, “It is not much, but I hope you like it.”
“Thank you,” Adam replied, “I will love anything you give me.”
Casey smiled and passed him two gifts. Charlie grabbed another smaller one but hid it by his side instead. It wasn’t time for that yet.
Adam took the gifts and held them close. He reached over and grabbed the gifts he had gotten for Charlie and Casey. Passing them to each individual.
“This way we can open them at the same time,” Adam reasoned.
“Smart idea, Banksie,” Charlie said eyeing the beautifully wrapped gift on his lap.
“Well, what are we waiting for,” Casey urged. Charlie and Adam took the cue, ripping into the paper that covered the gifts.
Adam’s smile grew when he opened the first present and found a hand-knitted sweater from Casey. He put it on before continuing to Charlie’s present. Charlie watched nervously as Adam tore open the gift and pulled out the painting.
“Oh, Charlie,” He sighed in wonder, “This is amazing.”
“It’s not much, but I painted it myself,” Charlie said with a small smile.
Adam’s eyes wandered over the painting, taking in all the details. It was a fairly simple painting, but the message was very deliberate. It was two hockey uniforms on each side, four in total. Each showed a different rendition of their Duck’s jerseys. The original green jersey and the updated white one. Charlie’s was on the left and Adam’s was on the right. If you looked closely you could see that some of the lines were crooked. That the colors weren’t exact. However, Adam saw none of that. He only saw a unique and wonderful gift.
Adam set down the painting gently and pulled Charlie into a side hug.
“It’s perfect,” Adam declared, “I love it.”
Charlie smiled, hugging back.
“Good,” He replied.
Adam pulled back and wiped the small tears that had formed in the corner of his eyes.
“Open your gifts,” He urged. Casey and Charlie nodded. They both eagerly ripped open the packages.
“Oh Adam this is beautiful,” Casey gushed. Her gift was a small tea set. The kettle was a deep blue and dotted with stars. The cups were painted to resemble the planets of Mars, Earth, Mercury, and Venus.
“Charlie mentioned you liked tea,” Adam recalled, “I thought of you as soon as I saw this set.”
“It is lovely,” Casey hugged him, “Thank you dear.”
“You’re welcome,” Adam smiled. He turned his attention to Charlie as he finished unwrapping the gift.
“Oh, this is so cool!” Charlie grinned. He pulled out a steel, circular key chain. On one side it read “96” and on the other “99”. Around the edges, on both sides, were the numbers of the other Ducks.
“I ordered it specially made,” Adam informed him, “That way we are with you no matter where you are.”
“It is marvelous, thank you,” Charlie shot him a warm smile.
“Before we open any of the other gifts I think you have one more,” Casey addressed Adam, “Charlie?”
“Right,” Charlie stood and slipped the small box into his pocket, “Will you follow me, Adam?”
Charlie shifted nervously as he waited for Adam’s response.
“Ok, sure,” Adam said standing up, “Where are we going?”
“Just upstairs,” Charlie replied.
Adam nodded and followed Charlie back up to his room. Adam sat on the bed as Charlie shut the door behind them.
Charlie rubbed his hands together nervously. He was about to make the best decision ever or the worst.
“Everything ok, Charlie?” Adam asked.
“Yeah, I just hope I haven’t mistook the signs,” He said taking a seat next to Adam.
“Oh?” Adam asked.
“Yeah, I was gonna wait until after Christmas but then you called,” Charlie explained, “So, it felt like the right time.”
“Charlie, what are you trying to say,” Adam asked.
“I..I got you a second gift,” Charlie explained pulling out the small box, “If you like it, it might be the most useful.”
“And if I don’t?” Adam asked.
“Hopefully, you’ll let me down gently,” Charlie mumbled. He softly plopped the gift into Adam’s hands. Adam wanted to ask more. To figure out why Charlie was being so cryptic. However, it seemed the answers were in this box so he might as well open it. So carefully Adam undid the small bow and pulled open the box. Inside there was only one thing. On a small pillow in the box sat a single sprig of Mistletoe.
“It’s mistletoe,” Adam observed, “You are giving me a sprig of mistletoe?”
“Well, I was kinda hoping we could use it, now,” Charlie replied shyly, “It is a Christmas tradition.”
“You want a Christmas kiss?” Adam gasped.
“If that’s ok,” Charlie answered, “It seemed the easiest way to tell you how I feel.”
“How do you feel?” Adam asked, growing amused.
“It’s obvious isn’t it?” Charlie asked. Adam smirked at how red his face had become.
“Well, you can never be sure,” Adam reasoned, “I think you should be more obvious.”
Charlie sighed, his face as red as Santa’s rosy cheeks.
“I like you,” He mumbled.
“What was that?” Adam teased, “I couldn’t really hear you.”
“I like you!” Charlie blurted out, looking up. Adam was smiling brightly.
“So, you just want a Christmas kiss?” Adam asked.
“Well, I wouldn’t say no to more,” Charlie replied, “However we have to start somewhere.”
Adam rolled his eyes at the antics of the other boy. He would never tell anyone, but he was grateful his car had died.
“We can start with a kiss,” Adam replied, “Maybe see where it goes from there.”
Charlie gulped and nodded. He pulled the mistletoe out of the box and held it over them. Charlie closed his eyes tightly and puckered his lips. Adam laughed softly and cupped Charlie’s cheeks to pull the boy forward to meet his lips.
Charlie melted into the kiss. Both their lips were chapped and the small amount of stubble Charlie had tickled Adam’s lips. However, it was hands down the best kiss either of them had ever received. Charlie pulled back after a few moments.
“Wow….” He breathed.
Adam laughed, “Thank you for the gift.”
“Any time,” Charlie replied, still dazed.
“Merry Christmas, Charlie,” Adam said as he rubbed his thumb across Charlie's cheek.
“Merry Christmas to you too,” Charlie replied as he grasped onto Adam’s collar pulling him into another kiss.
Adam smiled into the kiss. Charlie was right, the mistletoe proved to be very, very useful.
