Is BL Being Overly Influenced by Modern Western Romance Tropes?
Short answer: No. anyways, in the following essay I will explain that James Cameron is a weeb...
(okay fine~~ lets actually do this)
TLDR: discussing what media globalization is, how fandom can distill it down to only American/European cinema, showcasing how a lot of current BL is influenced by countries within it's own proximity and NOT "the west" but each other, also James Cameron is still a weeb
I had seen a post that basically proposited that BL was being influenced by modern western romance tropes and had used things like omegaverse and mafia settings as an example. I found this, in a word, fucking annoying (oh, two words I guess) because it's micro-xenophobic to me.
It positions western - and really what we mean by this is American/European countries, we're not talking about South American countries are we? - cinema as the central breadbasket of all cinema in and of itself. Inherently, all following cinema must be in some way, shape, or form, influenced by American/European standards, and as such America/European countries are directly responsible for cinema everywhere else, and these places - namely non-white countries - do not influence each other, nor have their own histories in regards to storytelling or cinema and do not, in turn, also influence American/European film making either.
Now like, do I think all of that~~ is intentionally malicious thinking on behalf of folks in fandom? No, so chill out.
I do, however, think a lot of it is birthed from simple ignorance and growing up in an environment where ~The West~ is propagated to be central, individual, and exceptional as opposed to the monolith of "Asia" - by which we mean China, Korea, Japan don't we? How often in discussions of Asian countries is Iran, India, or Saudi Arabia brought up even tho they are all Asian countries? - or the monolith that is South America - in which some folks might believe regions like the Caribbean and/or Central America belong to, but nope there both North America.
Anyway, what we're talking about here is the concept of "media globalization":
"The production, distribution, and consumption of media products on a global scale, facilitating the exchange and diffusion of ideas cross-culturally." (source)
"The media industry is, in many ways, perfect for globalization, or the spread of global trade without regard for traditional political borders. [...] the low marginal costs of media mean that reaching a wider market creates much larger profit margins for media companies. [...] Media is largely a cultural product, and the transfer of such a product is likely to have an influence on the recipient’s culture." (source)
Typically when I see fandom discussing what falls under MG the topic is usually focused on how "the west" is influencing Thai/Korean/Chinese/Japanese media.
Enter, Pit Babe.
Surely Pit Babe was influenced by Supernatural right? Omegaverse is huge in the west - love it, hate it, meh it - it originated in the west - specifically via Supernatural after all.
Nah.
Omegaverse has been popular in Japan and China for almost a decade, if not longer. The earliest omegaverse manga I can think of is Pendulum: Juujin Omegaverse by Hana Hasumi which was released in 2015, almost a decade ago.
Tumblr media
(what if you added furries into omegaverse? WHAT IF?? - Japan)
There's countless popular omegaverse manga too, and the dynamics only moderately resemble the ones we're familiar with in the west. Juujin is part omegaverse and part furry/beastmen - the alphas are all beastmen the omegas are humans - while something like Ookami-kun Is Not Scary only slightly resembles omegaverse dynamics as a hybrid series - beastmen are really popular in Japan in part b/c of historical mythology (you see the combination of romantic Beastmen and Japanese culture & folklore in Mamoru Hosoda's work The Boy and the Beast and Wolf Children).
Megumi & Tsugumi (2018) is so popular they're an official English edition published by VIZ's imprint SuBlime and that's a straight up omegaverse story.
Tumblr media
(look at the omega symbol on the cover loud and proud baby)
So if Pit Babe was influenced by anything, it certainly wasn't "the west" it was Japan, Korea and China. Because those countries have a thriving omegaverse sub-genre going and have had such for 10 plus years now. Supernatural is popular in Japan, yes, and that may be where Japan and Japanese fans originally found omegaverse as a fictional sub-genre.
HOWEVER
Japanese fans took the sub-genre, bent it, played with it, and evolved it into their own thing. As such, other countries in their proximity, like Thailand, China, and Korea who read BL and GL manga, found it and were like "hey, we wanna play too!"
Tumblr media
(is that an omegaverse yuri novel I spy?? yes, yes it is)
When I watched the Red Peafowl trailer, it had more in common with Kinnporsche, History: Trapped, along with films and shows like: Jet Li's The Enforcer, and Fist of Legend, Donnie Yen's Flash Point, Raging Fire, and Kung Fu Jungle, Han Dong-wook's The Worst of Evil, Kim Jin-Min's My Name, Lee Chung-hyeon's The Ballerina, Baik's Believer & Believer 2, Yoshie Kaoruhara's KeixYaku, popular Don Lee films The Gangster, the Cop and the Devil and Unstoppable alongside BL manga like Honto Yajuu and Bi No Isu (probably one of the most well known yazuka manga to date).
youtube
youtube
youtube
Like, we're seeing a rise in mafia based BLs and people think that's because of "western influence" and not the absolute insane success of kinnporsche??? Especially in countries like China, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines and other Asian countries???
Mafia films and gang shows aren't even that popular here in America/Europe; don't get me wrong, they still get made and exist, but the last full length film was The Irishman which did not make it's budget back, and while Power is still on-going it's not a smash hit either. The heyday of Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, Goodfellas, and Scarface are long gone. And if you've watched any those shows or films they have very little in common with Kei x Yaku, Kinnporsche, or Red Peafowl in tone, or style.
Tumblr media
(who knew martin just wanted to make his al pacino/robert de niro fanfic come to life all these years?)
Another example, The Sign, which is clearly taking inspiration from Chinese costume dramas: Ashes of Love, Fairy and Devil, White Snake (and it's many adaptions), Guardian, & Ying Yang Master Dream of Eternity. Alongside Hong Kong and Korean cop and romance shows like Tale of the Nine-Tailed, Hotel Del Luna, Director Who Buys Me Dinner, First Love, Again, and previously mentioned cop dramas.
youtube
youtube
youtube
Like, I know y'all don't think Twins is influenced by, what, American sports classic Angels in the Outfield?? Gridiron Gang?? Rocky?? Nah that shit is inspired by the popularity of sports manga like Haikyuu!!, Slam Dunk, Prince of Tennis (which even has a Chinese drama adaption), and the like. And also probably History 2, & Not Me but I'm like 87% sure Twins is just Haikyuu fanfic.
So like, does this mean that there's NO history in which American and European cinema influenced these countries? What, no, obviously that's not true, American/European totally have had media influence on countries like Korea, Japan, etc.
Astro Boy by Osamu Tezuka considered "the father of manga" was inspired by Walt Disney's work on Bambi. Another more recent and prominent example is director Yeon Sang-ho and his film Train to Busan.
"And it was Snyder’s movie [Dawn of the Dead, 2004], not the 1978 original, that filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho recalled as his first encounter with the undead. “That was when I started my interest in zombies,” Yeon said, in an email interview through a translator from South Korea. Even today, he added, “it’s the most memorable and intense zombie movie I’ve ever seen.”" (source)
HOWEVER, the global influence doesn't stop there. It's not a one-way street. Yeon Sang-Ho was inspired by Zack Synder's Dawn of the Dead, a remake of George Romero's own work, but Yeon Sang-Ho's work has inspired countless Korean film makers to make their own zombie media; following Train to Busan there's been: Kingdom (2019 - current), All of Us Are Dead (2022), Zombie Detective (2020), Zombieverse (2023), Alive (2020), Rampant (2018).
And hey, wouldn't you know it now we're starting to see more zombie media coming out of places like Japan (Zom 100 the manga, movie, and anime) and High School of the Dead.
Do you know what Domundi's series Zombivor (2023, pilot trailer only) reminds me of? It's NOT The Walking Dead (which is the only relevant zombie media America has created in the last decade) it's Korea's All of Us Are Dead (2022). Comparing the trailers, the settings, the tone, it's clear where Zombivor is pulling inspiration from: Korean zombie cinema. NOT American zombie cinema.
youtube
youtube
youtube
In fact a lot of Domundi's shows - Cutie Pie, Middleman's Love, Naughty Babe, Bed Friend - are all very clearly inspired by Korean filmmaking, specifically that of romantic kdramas from the 2016 - 2020 era. Not always in story, but rather in technique.
This is media globalization. It's not simply ~The West~ influencing non-American/European countries but countries who are often more close in terms of: proximity, culture, and trade are going to have more influence on each other.
It is far more likely that Aoftion (Naughty Babe, Cutie Pie, Zombivor) was influenced by watching Train to Busan, All of Us Are Dead, and other Korean zombie shows and films than a single episode of Walking Dead.
My point isn't that this goes one way only, but rather it is very literally a global thing. This includes American and European film makers being influenced by non-American and European cinema.
Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Darren Aronofsky, Christopher Nolan, the Wachowski sisters, George Lucas and James Cameron have all been influenced by Japanese film making, especially the works of Akira Kurosawa, Satoshi Kon, and Mamoru Oshii.
Tumblr media
John Wick's entire gun-fu sub-genre is heavily influenced by classic Hong Kong action films, specifically John Woo films. Legend of Korra, The Boondocks, Voltron, Young Justice, My Adventures with Superman are all obviously inspired by Japanese anime but animated by a Korean animation studio (Studio Mir). Beyond that, the rise in adult animated dramas like Castlevania, Critical Role Vox Machina, and Invincible to name a few are very clearly taking inspiration from anime in terms of style. The weebs that were watching Adult Swim's Inuyasha, Bleach, and Dragon Ball Z have grown up and are now working in Hollywood.
Okay so like, what's the point of all this? What's the issue? Since American/European cinema does influence et all cinema does any of this really matter?
YES.
I take contention with this line of thinking because it centers "the west" and our supposed individual importance way to much. Declaring definitively that "BL is being influenced by western tropes" and then including tropes, narratives, and film making styles that aren't inherently western and actually have major roots in the cinema of various Asian countries, removes the existence of individual history these countries have which are rich, varied, and nuanced. It removes the "global" part of globalization by declaring "the globe" is really just America and Europe.
It distills these countries down to static places that only exist when American/European audiences discover them.
BL doesn't exist in a vacuum you can trace the development of Korean BL to the development of Korean het dramas almost to a T. You can also trace their development to the queer history of each country and how Thailand interacts culturally with China, Japan, Korea, etc and vice versa. It also ignores the history of these countries influencing American cinema as well. Don't mistake "the globe" for only your sphere of experience.
Anyway James Cameron is a damn weeb y'all have a good night.

Okay, I saw the part in the noob!reader post about Kirby. I love Kirby and would love a Kirby!reader in hazbin hotel. Like how he is cute but can consume worlds and everyone is just like *pikachu shocked face*, same with him being able to pull out random weapons from his abilities. I can imagine he got there from a new weird portal and meta knight is like “where is he NOW?”.
Kirby is a being of chaos and I love him ❤️
I ALSO LOVE KIRBBY I WAS A BIG KIRBY KIN💗💗 🦆
HAZBIN HOTEL X KIRBY! READER
prompt: you lost the sight of your best friend only to be somewhere completely different.
Tumblr media
Meta knight was walking ahead of you as you picked up flowers with your cute smile. “Poyo!” You said smiling ready to show meta knight your flowers you picked up into a bouquet.
When all of a sudden, you were getting pulled into a red portal as you screamed out to meta knight who seemed to be in his own world.
“POYO! POYO!” You then get sucked in as meta knight turns to see nothing. “Reader/Kirby?…..where is he NOW!” Meta knight exclaims, his accent thickening in worry as he runs around the area calling out your name.
Meta was basically that Brandon rogers meme when he lost his “child” 😭
You swirl in the portal to get thrown out and roll into the feet of a person. “Oh my! Are you okay sweetie?” The sweet voice says as she picks you up. Charlie looked worry seeing you dizzy. “Poyoo..” you said with a dazed out look from your trip of the portal.
Charlie took you in her hotel, getting you water and suited to rest as vaggie checks up. After 24 hours, they kept you as you became part of the hotel staff.
I headcannon you once accidentally swallowed Angel because you saw him as a regular spider. You literally transformed into his color palette before Charlie made you cough him up.
Angel was so traumatized 😭
I imagine you literally almost ending hell’s population by yourself cause you were hungry..you dead ass ran through the streets eating random shit. Thank goodness Lucifer picked you up and ran.
You once walked into Lucifer brain storming and he saw you…he immediately had a new idea for his duck creation. He made you stay in his room until Charlie said it was your bed time.
Vaggie always keep tabs on you so you don’t cause trouble around the pride ring and the hotel.
IMAGINE HOW YOU LITERALLY ATE A BUILDING…A FUCKING BUILDING AND HUSK WHO TOOK YOU FOR A ERRAND STROLL WAS LIKE
Tumblr media
The egg boiz
Nahh cause you definitely had swallowed up the egg boiz to have a egg shell around you to hide in the egg shell like an ability.
Sir Pentious is always scared of the fact of you just eating him. But you don’t cause you literally get fed chips by the bar. So Pentious calms down and lets you have some time with him
Lucifer would probably make you inhale one of his rubber ducks so you can have a duck beak and wings just so he can chase you around with heart eyes excited that his hyperfixation became real
You have a duck hat and a duck pj set. ALSO WITH AN APPLE THEME SET WHICH IS FAMOUS IN MORNINGSTAR FAMILY ❤️❤️
I can see you always following Alastor like the egg boiz did in “scrambled eggs” 😭 except you just waddle beside him cutely
“Poyoooo… poyoooo..” you said softly as you tug on Alastor’s pant leg. Alastor looks down slightly entertained by your language and gesture for him to look at you.
“Well aren’t you an eager little thing…” alastor says picking you up and taking you to show Rosie his new found friend.
Husk once
STOP IT CAUSE WHAT IF YOU INHALED A KNIFE AND EQUIPPED IT ONLY YOU BE THAT FUCKIN MEME WITH KIRBY HOLDING A KNIFE😭😭
Tumblr media
YOU WOULD STAB SOMEONE’S TOES AND KNEES YOU ABSOLUTE MENACE!!‼️
You definitely stood outside of the Vee’s tower holding the knife with a smile as Valentino looks so scared closing his curtains.
#justiceforangeldust
Angel dust loves you to the point he might adopt you as a sibling since you are pink like him.
Charlie and vaggie are the parents who maintain what you eat and sleep. Dead as you were gonna eat a butterfly when vaggie picked you up like “NOPE! NOT TODAY!” And took you inside for the rest of the time-
See I can personally just imagine that Kirby gif where Kirby eats the whole ass meal on the table. So imagine the crew’s face seeing you do that shit 😭
I can see you getting on fat nuggets and just start to ride fat nuggets like a cowboy 😭💗
Angel definitely recorded it as you just smile while fat nuggets runs around the hotel freely.
I headcannon you bought a bunch a flowers for the crew and the was so adorable how you just picked each flower matching the cast’s colors
Imagine you just watching a hell cartoon and Vox is like “kill them! Kill your entire family” as you jolted shocked and cry at the scary tv man
Niffty once fed you dust particles thinking it wouldn’t affect you…it did cause you coughed and got sick. Niffty cried, not thinking it would harm you as she sniffles giving you soup in your room.
Niffty was banned from making lunch for you😭
Alastor be trying to troll you into eating cannibal meat, like dead ass he would make you a sandwich with “turkey” meat. But you could already smell THE MUSSTTT 🤮
So he failed with that mission. But at least you like his radio station and his jazz music.
Charlie brought you to her meeting with the first man so she can feel comfortable as you are kinda like her service animal.
Adam actually would like you cause you love to eat endlessly and you are pick up size. This mf will literally pick you up with one hand and dribble you like a basketball or treat you like a damn football💀
“Hey lute! Go long!” “Yes sir!” Lute replies back as she moves back far. Adam launches you making you scream as lute flies up and catches you.
“GOALLLL! FUCK YEAH!” Lute says accidentally throwing you off of the cloud floor they were on. “LUTE WTF?!” Adam yells looking at you fall before a portal had eaten you up. “Well damnit…I was gonna miss that lil pink shit.” Adam says before walking away with lute close behind him
Meta knight is back at home was tweaking out as he literally sobs eating with a picture of you on the table. He misses you deeply as he stares at the photo before looking down. “My friennnd…” he says with a sniffle as he covers his face.
Good ending was that you plopped down on the table from the portal as meta immediately hugs you as you smiled happily, showing him the flowers. You guys ate dinner happily!

Had a story idea.
It's Halloween in Primp Town, and Schezo does not give a shit, but everyone else does. So, instead of staying in his cave and failing to fall asleep with all the noise from town, he's off chasing rumors of a magical artifact inside some nearby ruins that only appear on nights when the veil between life and death is thinner than usual. He finds the artifact, which I haven't decided what exactly it is...and it of course turns out to be sentient and cursed, and with a Halloween-themed curse at that because why the hell wouldn't it?
It turns him into the Headless Horseman for obvious reasons, pushes his spirit into the pumpkin head, hijacks the rest of his body, then rides out of the ruins and uses its full strength, summoning a small army of spirits and causing chaos by making the costumes of everyone in town real. Just how real, and whether or not it affects their mind along with their body, depends on the quality of the costume.
The ones I've figured out include:
Arle and Carbuncle as a Pokemon Trainer and a Pikachu. She still has her memories because her costume's just made up of normal clothes she got in Suzuran.
Klug as Strange Klug. So now there's two Ayashis and it is very awkward for both of them.
Accord and Popoi as each-other. There is no change, but a process has occurred.
Lidelle as Satan. This is of course incredibly awkward for Arle.
Amitie as a pirate. She actually ends up as a secondary villain because she's convinced she's a real pirate and considers the artifact Treasure so she wants it for herself.
Sig in his vampire alt. He's decided to do Pirate Amitie's bidding and it's clear from how dramatic and stereotypical he's being that he's also not in his right mind.
Raffina as Vivian from Paper Mario.
Ringo as a ghost. She thought the classic bedsheet look would be funny, and yes she is absolutely terrified of herself.
Maguro as Meta Knight, because why not.
Risukuma as a mad scientist. The curse ends up not even affecting him.
Draco as a genie. Specifically Witch's genie, for some reason. (you know why...)
The only way to get things back to normal is to destroy the artifact.

Smash Ultimate Roster Fun Facts:
(One per character and according to my headcanons)
Mario: Very supportive of the goals of the roster, even if he doesn't agree with their moral values.
DK: Can talk but only says, "Banana Slamma."
Link: Gender non-conforming and very adorable
Samus/Zero Suit Samus: Many think she's straight but she's actually aroace.
Dark Samus: Interacts with no one at all
Yoshi: Wags his tail often
Kirby: Petitioning for Bandana Dee to get in the next Smash Game (if there is one)
Fox: Feels a lot of guilt for ruining all the viability of half the Melee roster (more reasons why Melee is worse than Brawl and Ultimate lmao)
Pikachu: Belongs to Red but acts more independently.
Luigi: Slightly jealous of his brother, but its more of a friendly sibling rivalry thing.
Ness: Has the most obvious crush on Lucas.
Captain Falcon: Everyone loves this absolute Chad, and he cares about everyone as well
Jigglypuff: Still gets mad and draws on everyone's face when they fall asleep as she sings.
Peach: Sass incarnate
Daisy: Somehow even sassier than Peach
Bowser: Literally every kid's father figure
Ice Climbers: Feel like they deserve the hate they get for being so broken in Melee and Brawl.

Marth: Is the most attractive person in Smash
Lucina: Was filled with serotonin when she met Marth for the first time

Ganondorf: Is a Captain Falcon fanboy, hence why their moves look so similar
Mewtwo: Meditates so he doesn't get wrapped in the chaos
Roy: Is our boy
Chrom: Everyone's second adoptive father
Mr. Game and Watch: Is secretly a zombie because the Game and Watch games are dead
Meta Knight: Unlike the Virgin Fox, he, an absolute Chad, is proud of how broken he was, furtherproof Brawl is better than Melee.
Pit: BEST BOY AND A PURE CINNAMON ROLL
Dark Pit: Wants Shadow in Smash because, well, he knows better.
Wario: Still petitioning to get Waluigi in Smash
Snake: Goes, "Hrnnnngh," at the beginning of every few sentences he makes

Sonic: Has races against Acceleratle Hero

Ryu: Constantly training
Ken: Trying to get Ryu to live a little
Cloud: Still getting waking nightmares over Sephiroth

Bayonetta: Like Meta Knight, was proud of how broken she was.
Inkling: Has the most swagger out of everyone
Ridley: Joins Sephiroth in giving waking nightmares to Samus and Cloud

Note
Just for fun, the Hands set the Balance Forcefield to give everyone their power level of when they were strongest .Pikachu (SSB), Fox (Melee), Meta Knight (Brawl), and Bayonetta (four ) had a four-way duel. That did not end well.
It was absolute chaos. Whenever Meta Knight needed a quick rest he either camped via Dimensional Cape or he glided up really high. Meanwhile everyone had a hard time touching Fox due to constant wavedashing.

I’m writing down my Smash Canon, none of you can stop me.
This post tackles the Hands, the timeline, how the dimensions come together, where Tabuu, Galeem and Dharkon came from, and where fighters, trophies, non-fighter pokemon, bosses and the staff stay.
Hands
Master Hand and Crazy Hand are brothers, Master the older one by seven years, and the creator of the tournament. What originally started as him telling stories to his little brother quickly morphed into an inter-dimensional tournament, which he considers his greatest achievement.
Both of the Hands are powerful dimension warpers, although one is very careful with it to the point of seeming weak (Master), and the other one’s wrapped mental state severely limits his (Crazy). They’re both relatively new in the game, but neither of them are willing to play by the rules.
Interestingly enough, Master Hand’s core is actually less stable than Crazy’s. This is due to Crazy’s more loose attitude, allowing him to let out his inner energy more often.
Timeline
First Tournament: Simply named Super Smash Brothers. Master was 10 and Crazy was 3. Master was essentially putting on a show for his little brother. Pikachu was the winner, with Kirby as a close second.
Second Tournament: Named the Melee Tournament. Master was 12 and Crazy was 5. At Crazy’s and the competitors from the first tournament insistence, Master organized a second one where his brother could assist. This ended up causing the whole Giga Bowser incident. This is the tournament where Master introduced power restraints. The winner was Fox.
Third Tournament: Named the Brawl tournament. Master was 19 and Crazy was 12. Tabuu hijacked the tournament early in, took control of Master Hand, and Crazy had to go into hiding. Unbeknownst to everyone, he took the occasion to recruit two people: Snake, and Sonic. As thanks, once the tournament was over, Master allowed them to participate in the tournament. The (uncontested) winner was Meta Knight, forcing Master to rework the power restraints for the next tournament.
Fourth Tournament: Named the Sm4sh tournament as a joke by Crazy. Master was 25 and Crazy was 18. Upon discovering that Crazy’s dimensional range was larger than his, Master convinced his brother to use these powers to get fighters all over the multiverse. The tournament had a lot of difficulties, namely a lot of the fighters arriving later than planned, and Master accidently letting out Master Core. The winner was Bayonetta.
Fifth Tournament: Named the Ultimate tournament, Master Hand pulled out all the stops on this one: everyone is invited back, using his powers to their fullest extent to let in fighters they never could before, finally reworking the power restraints so everyone has equal chances, preparing invitations for later fighters in advance, things like that. Master was 29 and Crazy was 22. Too bad Galeem attacked a few days before the tournament, and that Crazy thought going to her sworn enemy was a good idea... they both have since been defeated, and made into glorified secretaries. The tournament is currently on-going, so no winner has been decided (although Kirby is now allowed in the winner’s lounge as thanks for saving everyone).
Dimensions
The dimension where the Hand brothers reside is in the middle of an entire cluster of dimension that essentially corresponds to Nintendo franchises. Master’s reach consist of this cluster, and Crazy’s extends beyond that, although it’s still restrained to video games. Galeem and Dharkon both exist outside of dimensions, and generally try to avoid them. As for the subspace...
Tabuu & Subspace
For every positive force, there is a negative force of equal scale. The subspace is that force to the dimension where the Smash tournament takes place, and Tabuu is it’s master. Unlike Master Hand and Crazy Hand, which are beings of actions, he prefers stagnancy, and as thus, tried to destroy their world. He would’ve succeeded if it hadn’t been for the Smashers.
Now without it’s master trying to endlessly expend it, the subspace is back to it’s natural state, simply simmering out of sight. One must wonder what could be hiding in there...
Galeem & Dharkon
Galeem and Dharkon are being that existed before time itself. Galeem represents light and order, while Dharkon represents darkness and chaos. Their home-realm was reduced to shambles millennias ago, and they now live in the spaces between dimensions. They hate each other for reasons only they remember.
Surprisingly enough for most civilization, Galeem is the one mortals would consider evil, and Dharkon good. They themselves are too ancient for silly things like human morality. After all, Galeem recreates the universes she destroys, and Dharkon’s sheer presence is enough for whole realms to collapse on themselves.
They ended up dragging the Smashers in their godly dispute, and getting taken several notches down and forced to live in company of other people might just be what they need to finally look around themselves.
Fighters, Trophies, Pokemons, Bosses, Spirits and Staff
Everyone lives in a settlement called the Smash Mansion, which started out as a modest house before being converted for Brawl, managed by the Hand brothers. The mansion is surrounded by a large forest. On one side of the forest, it eventually gives way to a beach and a never ending ocean. On the other one, the forest becomes thicker and darker until you arrive to the edge of the universe.
All of the fighters have their own rooms, and they are sorted by a number assigned to them when they first arrive. The trophies have a whole floor to themselves, and room together. The pokemons are kept in a single room in their pokeballs, but are let out quite frequently so they can get some air. The bosses all have tailored measures to keep them peaceful. For example, while Rathalos is allowed to wander the forest peacefully, Galleom is kept in the garage, deactivated, and Marx is allowed to live in the mansion, albeit with powerful power restraints. Spirits are summoned through a magical circle on the lobby’s floor, usually covered by a carpet.
The staff  are hired to help Master Hand manage the mansion, and they have a whole wing to themselves. I don’t know who all of them could be, but here’s what I have for now:
Galeem and Dharkon, secretaries and in charge of keeping the smashers in check while the Hand brothers focus on the tournament.
Cooking Mama, head chef. She gets along well with everyone in the mansion, but she’s not really a fighter...
Doomguy and Galacta Knight, security. Galacta guards the edges of the dimension, and she’s here because the brothers had taken pity on her and freed her some time after the Galeem fiasco. As thus, she’s eternally grateful to them. Doomguy guards the mansion, and he’s here because he just showed up one day and has refused to leave since then.
The Waddle Dees, servants. They help around the mansion every way they can and have been gracefully volunteered by King Dedede. For some reason, a certain bandana-wearing dee seems absent...

Troy vs Skye vs Chase vs Danny vs Auoroa vs Rufous in Super Smash Bros. What happens?
Troy picks Kirby cuz he’s trash for that lil blob of pink.
Skye picks Pikachu, her go to Pokémon.
Chase picks Zelda, can’t go wrong with a badass princess.
Danny picks Sonic because blue.
Aurora picks Lucario, he’s dark and mysterious like her, her words not mine.
Rufous picks Meta-knight to one up Troy.
After the characters are chosen the battle commences, it’s absolute chaos.
The mansion is a disaster, couches are flipped, food on the ceiling, and only one makes it out with all their limbs in tact.

It was chaos aboard the Halberd.
A few minutes ago, Meta Knight, Samus, Sonic and Pikachu had gone to the hangar for a free-for-all match. It had been business as usual -with Sonic unfortunately losing a stock early due to a mistimed recovery- until they arrived on the deck, where they were met not by the primed and ready Combo Cannon, but by the crew scrambling to deal with numerous malfunctions.
The fighters decided to put their match on hold, and after meeting with Captain Vul they determined that there was a stowaway in the Reactor, and possibly more than one.
“Well, what are we waiting around here for?” Sonic asked, “we’ve got a saboteur to catch.”
Meta Knight nodded, “Indeed. I will not allow my vessel to fall again.”
As the team made their way through the ship, they mentally prepared themselves for who they may be facing. most likely it was one of the villains, but it could just as easily have been one of their minions or even a newcomer hoping to get on Ganondorf’s radar.
What they found instead was Pichu in his Team Skull cap and a jetpack fiddling with a pile of smart bombs and a remote. Immediately, Samus went into Pokemom mode, “Pichu, this really isn’t a safe place to be playing.”
Pichu looked over at them in surprise, then grinned slyly, “You’re damn right it isn’t, mom.”
Everyone started. “Pi, Pika!?”
Sonic was the first to recover, “Did you just… speak English?”
“Ah, right, you wouldn't know about that yet,” he took off his cap, revealing a small bald patch next to his left ear with a faint surgical scar and a slight square-shaped bump under the skin, “Universal translator, courtesy of Ridley’s tech department. Just a little bonus to all these custom remote smart bombs they asked me to plant. Speaking of which,” his voice gained a dangerous dangerous edge, sparks from his cheeks coming dangerously close to the pile of explosives, “One wrong move and I blow us all to kingdom come.”
Meta Knight glared at the little rodent, “you’re with the villains?”
“What, Wolf didn’t tell you? Eh, I guess he wouldn’t want to tell anyone how bad I tore him up when he found me, prideful bastard that he is.”
“…Why, ” Samus almost whispered, “Why would you side with them?”
Pichu grinned, “Power, if you want a short answer. I know I’m the weakest Fighter here, especially with that stupid gimmick the Hands saddled me with. Taking the last two tournaments off to train didn’t really help that much, even if I can actually keep up now. Even back home I’m literally the baby version of your little buddy there.
“So I figured, if I can’t gain power and respect the right way, I might as well get it the wrong way. And now look at me! I was already G-man’s informant, and unlike your tubby bird I didn’t get caught until my grand exit! And now I’m moving on to the big leagues! I figure eventually, if I play my cards right, they'll be the ones working for me.”
He looked on in satisfaction at his fellow Fighters’ shocked, angry, and somewhat betrayed expressions, before putting his hat back on and glancing down at his remote, “well, I hate to scheme and run, but I'd really rather not be here a minute from now,” with that, he chucked one of the bombs at the ceiling and flew through, “Crappy landings, Suckahs!”
Meta Knight examined the bombs and swore in poyo, “He armed all of them separately! We don’t have time to find and disarm all of them, so we’ll have to evacuate.”
Sonic glanced over at Samus, who was staring blankly (or possibly angrily, at his height it was impossible to tell with the helmet on) at the hole where Pichu had been, “You guys go warn the crew. I’ll make sure our lady in armor gets out in time.”
Meta and Pikachu gave Samus a worried look each, then nodded and left the Reactor. Sonic then placed a gloved hand on her arm, “C'mon Sam, we gotta juice.”
She didn’t say anything, or even meet his eyes, but nodded and turned to leave. And as the two ran down the hall, Sonic wondered what all this would mean going forward. First things first, we need to warn Dedede he’s been compromised.

Cinematography?? In MY BL??? Not as likely as you think.
TLDR: it's a joke!!! but also legit sometimes I see "cinematography in bl" and it's just some basic pictures with mid-tone lighting and blue t-shirts. Let's talk film terms like: aperture, panning, tilting, and movement in film so we can see what goes into cinematography (with sources!). Also if I name a show you like as "boring cinematography" don't send me hate mail I'll laugh
(examples used: Our Skyy2 vs kinnporsche, 2gether vs semantic error, 1000 Stars vs The Sign)
If I name a show you like in this post as "bad cinematography" be chill about it, like, I ain't saying you can't like it, I'm just talking about techniques here not personal likability or overall show quality. I like badly filmed shit too say hello to my collection of Friday the 13th Blue Rays we're just here to talk techniques and like, educational stuff okay?
So the straight (heh) textbook definition of "cinematography" is: the art of making motion pictures. Which, frankly, tells you nothing. Like it's not wrong~~ but it's not informative either. Cinematography covers a lot of what we, the audience, visually see on screen:
"Cinematography is the art of photography and visual storytelling in a motion picture or television show. Cinematography comprises all on-screen visual elements, including lighting, framing, composition, camera motion, camera angles, film selection, lens choices, depth of field, zoom, focus, color, exposure, and filtration." (source)
So let's talk movement in film.
So when I talk about movement, what do I mean? I mean the way the camera, the characters, and the environment moves within a frame.
This video on Akira Kurosawa's usage of movement in a scene is brilliant:
youtube
Something as simple as having rain or fire in the background of a shot can enhance the emotions of a scene vastly. it gives the scene depth - literal depth, not narrative depth - that would otherwise be missing.
The way the camera moves and transitions leading the viewers eye back and forth makes what you're watching more engaging. You aren't consuming these scenes, you are engaging with them. They are apart of the story itself, giving the environment life and texture so the characters within them matter more.
And, look, I get busting out Thee Akira Kurosawa might be unfair, but if we're gonna talk cinematography we can't not talk the importance of movement on film.
To understand good cinematography you have to understand what makes it good and as such what makes bad or mediocre cinematography.
In connection with movement we gotta talk about camera techniques like panning and tilting:
youtube
"Camera movements are a fundamental part of video production. They can be a powerful storytelling device, heightening tension, evoking emotions, and bringing the viewer into the action. Without saying a word, camera movements can transform a scene’s entire narrative, and direct audiences’ attention where you want it." (source)
So we have movement of environment, of characters, and we also have movement of the camera itself.
Ok so like, where does the BL come in Pikachu??
I'm getting to that, I'm going to start with a more general example: Our Skyy 2 (Bad Buddy meets 1000 Stars edition) vs Kinnporsche.
youtube
Starting at 5:17 we have Pran stranded or whatever, and this shot is like, it's fine. It's boring as hell, but fine. Why is it boring as hell? Well it's flat, it lacks movement, it lacks depth.
When the driver drove off the camera could have panned to follow his movement and then panned back to Pran at a different angle to showcase his isolation. Honestly since the scene starts with a mid close up of Pran, I would have had the camera behind Pran as the driver drove away, and had the camera pan around Pran 360 so we get shots of his environment, and him, while also emphasizing holy shit he's like, fucking stuck in the wilderness.
In general, there's a big lack of movement in the scene. The camera remains almost entirely static, there's no attempt at zooming in or out, following Pran's movement, or showcasing his environment in any meaningful way. Even when Pran begins walking towards the camera the angle of the framing is still centered, rather than tilted downward or upwards to give us more dimension (non-BL comparison, the Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington does the "walking towards the camera" shots really well).
We get a cut of a medium close up of Pran, with a deeper focus so his environment is blurred out.
I understand the thought process of this shot, we want the audience to focus on Pran, but if the point of the scene is to emphasize he's alone, confused, maybe even a bit anxious at his new circumstances it could've been done better. Take a wider shot from this angle, open up the lens to allow for that background environment to come through and show him isolated. Maybe do a pan above him or tilt the camera up going from his feet up as he nervously ruffles his hair. There's options here.
This just adds more walking to the scene, which we already had. It doesn't enhance or emphasize anything about Pran's emotions as a character.
Anyway the camera continues to follow him and then we get another cut. And it's from the same angle as before, only this time we see a truck coming. The camera remains static, it completely stops moving, and we just wait for the truck to drive into the frame.
This whole sequence of events ends at 5:57 and while not a long sequence I find it frustrating because it's boring. The only way the audience knows that Pran is anxious is via Nanon’s acting, there’s nothing in the filmmaking that enhances or contributes to that feeling.
He’s alone, until he’s not, and that’s all the scene tells us. It leaves the scene lacking any tension as well, because we’re not getting a sense of isolation - how large is this space? How alone is Pran right now? What is the entirety of the environment?
Contrast this with a similar scene in kinnporsche ep06 where Kinn and Porsche are alone in the mountains. I don't have a video of this specific scene so I have to link the trailer, starting at 1:48 to 1:52, but see how we start mid-close up of Kinn and Porsche, then pan out from above them? This is a better showcasing of just how vast the environment around Kinn and Porsche are.
They're still center frame throughout all of this, the depth of the scene is in mid-focus so nothing is blurred out and you can see the sharpness of the environment.
It also places the audience in the same space as Kinn, who is looking up at the sky while the audience looks down at him. It makes the audience a more active participant in the shot, emphasizes the state of the characters, gives the audience a sense of space & environment, and relies a sense of emotion.
The additional fast zoom out also adds to the scene by adding movement and making it more dynamic.
youtube
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(my man pran looking like this 🧍)
Both these scenes are pretty short, but they're relaying similar information and one is way more dynamic and effective than the other. Both Pran and Kinn/Porsche are alone in the wildness, but in the latter there's a lack of space, a lack of movement, and a lack dimension. This is mainly a framing issue, so let's talk more about camera movement (panning, & tilting).
Here's a scene from 2gether vs a scene from Semantic Error.
youtube
(saw someone say 2gether had a high production value and chepie where??)
This entire scene with Sarawat and Tine is flatly shot. There is nothing in their background so no outward movement is happening, the lighting is even as are the colors, everything is at the same depth, and there's little to no motion in the camera.
The scene with Sarawat pushing Tine into frame. Why doesn't the camera follow Tine's motion of movement so the scene has more momentum? It just stops and the char falls out of frame before walking back into it. Then we get a series of cuts back and forth of close ups on Sarawat and Tine's faces. Back and forth, back and forth.
The editing leaves a ton to be deserved because if the back and forth did a quick pan back and forth with each beat we could build up tension, give the scene some texture, heighten the intensity of the argument. If we're going for something softer we could place them in on better set, or make the characters move themselves - have Sarawat walk away from the argument up those stairs, have the camera follow his movement as Tine chases him continuing the argument - or play with the lighting a bit, pan the camera down or tilt it something!
When Tine kisses Sarawat why doesn't the camera move with him in a more notable way? Why did we have a cut to a close up? And then we're back in a mid close up and more cuts and this editor is killing me!
This scene is 4mins long and the only engaging bit of filmmaking here is when the camera follows Tine when he steps closer to Sarawat putting the latter in the frame at 3:15, the entire scene is 4 minutes long.
I want to compare this scene to this scene in Semantic Error which is also all dialogue and also obviously filmed on a shoestring budget.
youtube
So right away the camera work here is smart, it starts off in an establishing shot, evenly lit, of Sang Woo and Jae Young both in the frame. Then we get a mid close up of JY looking down, then a tight close up of JY looking up.
The change in camera angle emphasizes his surprise at seeing SW here as he looks up at SW. The lighting has also changed, it's much brighter now. The camera also begins to move, where it was static before it begins to tilt and shift.
We get a cut to SW, the first one of this scene. JY is seeing SW in a new light for the first time, and as such so is the audience. By starting the scene off in an outward shot with both chars in the frame, they are placed on the same level and the audience doesn't see their expressions up close. So when we're hit with JY's close up of surprise and then SW's close up of his wet hair it holds way more impact. It enhances the feelings of JY's character for the audience.
The lighting behind SW has also changed, it's much brighter, and warmer compared to the cooler tones of light behind JY. The camera also slows, and continues to to tilt and shift. JY's world has literally been shifted on his axis.
We get another cut, this time medium on SW and notice, the camera stops moving for that moment and the light around him dims. It's not as saturated. We're moved out of JY's pov here and back into "regular" framing.
SW tries to make JY leave, we get a close up cut of the cut on JY's arm - hey editing used to display important and new information! - then the camera cuts to SW getting medicine and here's a small but important thing, when he tosses at JY the camera follows his movement. And instead of cutting away, when JY gets up thinking SW is hurt, the camera follows JY's movement back towards SW.
It would have been easy to make a cut there back and forth - like in the 2gether scene did over and over - but following the movement of the characters makes the scene way more interesting visually to watch.
Changing the angles of the camera from a lower angle (where JY is looking up) to a downward angle (where SW is looking down) makes the scene more interesting visually as well and enhances the storybeat of JY looking up at SW in a new light memorized. This contributes to the story as well, as it's JY who catches feelings for SW first so their are literally, on uneven ground until they're not later in the story. The camera is panning, tilting, moving with the characters even given the limited space. The lighting adds to the effectiveness, as do the minimal cuts.
On a technical level, the scene in Semantic Error is just better filmed. In my own opinion, the scene is far more engaging b/c the filmmaking is better, where in 2gether the reliance is almost completely on the actors to sell the scene with little help. And I'm not saying nothing about Bright and Win cause their stans wildin'.
Next, I wanna talk about aperture.
I saw a post that used this word and I didn't understand the context in which they were using it because aperture isn't a style of filmmaking its a camera setting or lens adjustment - it's the rate at which the camera opens and closes letting in light and focus.
"Aperture is the opening of the lens through which light passes. When you hit the shutter release button to take the picture, the camera aperture opens to the predetermined width, letting a specific amount of light through. A large aperture lets more light in, and vice versa. Aperture is calibrated in f/stops, written in numbers like 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11 and 16. The larger the number, the narrower the aperture." (source) <- really recommend this article if you want to learn about aperture in film.
A great non-BL example of aperture used for style is One Piece Live Action where cinematographers Nicole Hirsch Whitaker, and Michael Wood love using deep focus aperture in a lot of scenes.
But let's compare The Sign vs 1000 Stars.
youtube
youtube
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So when the scene starts, we're in mid-focus/aperture, everything is of similar sharpness and depth. Nothing is especially blurred out we're getting the full spectrum of Phaya and Tharn's environment.
When the camera switches to close ups of Phaya and Tharn however, we get a deep focus aperture. That's why everything behind them is so blurred out. In a close up of Phaya, even Tharn's face is blurred. The director wants the audience to focus specifically on these characters individually, so we can understand the weight of their dialogue. But when the camera wants us to see the characters as a unit, it cuts, pulls back out of that deep focus and everything is back in mid-focus again.
Here's another thing, it's subtle but it's important.
This scene also combines what we already discussed about movement. At :08 of the scene, in that first mid-shot the camera is actually zooming in closer on Phaya and Tharn. Not dramatically, subtly, but it is there. This is important, because at 3:23 we get another mid-shot of them, pulled out of that deep focus, and the camera begins to zoom out.
The camera also follows the movement of Phaya grabbing Tharn's hands, then pans back up to Phaya's face once again before panning higher into the frame and panning back to their faces and zooming in.
When we move back out of that deep focus, into a mid-shot the camera continues to zoom out on the two characters as they kiss.
I saw someone say that this scene wasn't "filmed like BL kisses" and, eh? Like it isn't filmed in that static style of filmmaking which has dominated BL filmmaking probably due to budgetary reasons. But
The Sign follows a similar filmmaking style as Kinnporsche and Domundi shows do. But also just like, basic filmmaking techniques you'd see in shows of the non-CW/soap variety.
The thing fans are seeing here is film technique (probably partially due to a larger budget). Movement, lens adjustment, panning and titling, lighting and color are all playing a role in this specific scene.
Cinematography baby.
(sidenote the VFX of The Sign is dope as fuck too)
Okay so let's talk Our Skyy 1000 Stars
youtube
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So this opening scene follows a similar structure to the scene in The Sign: mid focus shot of the two chars, into separate deep focus close ups. It's also a dialogue heavy scene like the one with Phaya and Tharn.
So why does their scene work better on a technical level than this one in Our Skyy 2?
The scene in The Sign combines techniques of aperture, movement, lighting, color and framing to give everything more impact.
In this scene with Phupha and Tian we get a similar editing style as the scene in 2gether: lots of back and forth cuts, very tight close ups, static camera movement. Where as the camera zooms in and out during mid-shots, the camera doesn't move in Our Skyy 2. It remains motionless even though a zoom in as the two characters lay in bed would add a lot to the scene itself.
In the close ups the camera continues to remain static, only changing angles when there's a cut. At 1:22 Phupha moves his arm to wrap around Tian, the camera could have taken a closer shot at his arm, and then followed his movement as he wraps it around Tian. Like how the camera followed Phaya's movement when he holds Tharn's hand.
Instead it's just a flat shot, we see his arm wrap around in a mid-focus above shot. The camera does move to follow Tian a couple times - at 1:50 for example. But overall, the scene is stiff - who sleeps like this frfr - in framing, in movement, in depth.
I want to say that I don't think this scene is bad - like I do the 2gether scene or the earlier scene with Pran - I think it's just, okay~~
And no, for none of these examples did I pick "the worst" shots or whatever. I'm not out to get any specific show, but tried to find comparable scenes and compare and contrast the filmmaking techniques used in both and how effectively they were used.
I want to leave off with this.
There's a lot that goes into cinematography, yes this singular shot of Furiosa is amazing, but what makes the scene amazing?
Tumblr media
youtube
Pay attention to how the camera moves (panning and tilting), when the camera moves (zooms in and out), the movement of the scene (the hair and sand moving), the lighting (Furiosa from behind is in darkness, her side profile more lit), the depth of the scene itself changing (as she walks away from the group the focus/aperture gets deeper on her, then when she walks out of the frame it grows larger to focus on the characters left behind).
All these little things make up what is "cinematography". The more you learn about the techniques used the more you can notice about film and what makes a scene powerful.
As BL gets more budget we're seeing shows expand their filmmaking catalogue more and more. Which is exciting! If fandom is gonna talk cinematography I think it's helpful to have the vocab to do so, and it's cool to watch a scene and be like "oh I see what they're doing here and why and how".
I mentioned other things that go into cinematography like framing, lighting, color, and there's also editing (which is separate). Idk if I'll make a post about those things cause I'm lazy and this shit takes forever to research and write but who knows~~

So hey gang! It’s been a while since my last update, but a LOT has happened since then!
In my last post I forgot to mention that G&W rescued Pokemon Trainer at the beaches, and actually found Diddy Kong in the DK jungle! I was talking about how Shulk was handling some islands to the south, and we found Toon Link there, in the plains near a big reptile Rathalos! Shulk handled all of them just fine!
We went north for a while and found mountainous rocky regions, big volcanoes, and even went high up into the clouds, eventually even reaching Dream Land! Along the way we found Ness and Dedede!
We went back to that Octoling facility and found a route that led us to finding the great zap fish. That turned on the power, opening up a ton of pathways! In particular, it opened up a path straight to Little Mac!
At this point, we had explored everywhere and saved everyone we could! It was time for our big battle against Galeem, defeating Rathalos had destroyed his big barrier! I let Lucas handle this challenge, his PSI had really been kicking butt throughout the adventure!
Lucas did a fantastic job! Galeem never stood a chance. Unfortunately, that’s when the other guy showed up.
Dharkon.
Dude took over a bunch of people we never even got a chance to see! He created a whole new section to this world, a world of darkness. Everything looked totally wrecked and destroyed, chaos and desolation everywhere! Not to mention, a whole host of villains!
We had three options at first, and with our first choice we ended up in Hyrule! Lucas took the lead again and we pretty quickly found Zelda. Soon after, we also found the Mii Brawler and even Sonic the hedgehog! Sonic took the lead as we ran on into the lost woods to find Chrom and Young Link. Heading up to the master sword, we also found Cloud! Activating the master sword gave us access to the last part of Hyrule, ruled by Ganondorf. A whole host of tough foes waited for us there, but by the end we saved Ganondorf, and Lucas finished off the Demon King Ganon!
Our next destination took us to a realm of total chaos! Just a mish-mash of stuff from all sorts of worlds! It was clear that the person best suited to this challenge would be Mr. Game & Watch, if they’re gonna throw anything and everything at us, we’ll need the guy who can throw anything and everything back after all! It also helps that he’s the oldest person here, when asked a bunch of questions about information from many worlds over, G&W has a vast knowledge of just about everything! If he can, y’know, communicate. We found all sorts of people here! Luigi, K Rool, Meta Knight, ROB, just a whole host of people from varying places! Then, at the end of it all, we found him.
Marx.
Yep, I knew he’d be at it again if he had the chance! This time I took charge and personally knocked those fancy wings off of him myself!
The last place we visited was Castlevania! Mega Man took the lead to blast monster after monster! Richter, Ken, Robin, Ridley, they were just a few of the people the blue bomber rescued from that ridiculous castle! At the end of it all, Shulk took on Dracula himself!
We’ve also rescued quite a few people from the areas connecting these worlds, like Lucina and Incineroar. Now that we’ve taken out Dharkon’s protection, we’re just about to fight him directly! Here’s the team at this point...
Me, Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Fox, Pikachu, Luigi, Ness, Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff
Peach, Daisy, Bowser, Ice Climbers, Sheik, Zelda, Dr Mario, Pichu, Falco, Marth, Lucina, Young Link, Ganondorf, Mewtwo, Chrom, Mr Game & Watch
Meta Knight, Pit, Dark Pit, Zero Suit Samus, Wario, Snake, Ike, Pokemon Trainer, Diddy Kong, Lucas, Sonic, Dedede, Olimar, Lucario, ROB, Toon Link, Wolf
Villager, Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina, Little Mac, Greninja, Pac-Man, Robin, Shulk, Bowser Jr, Duck Hunt, Ryu, Ken, Cloud, Corrin
Inkling, Ridley, Simon, Richter, K Rool, Isabelle, Incineraor, and the Miis
This STILL isn’t quite everyone! Palutena and Bayonetta are big holes in this lineup, not to mention Roy! We’ve searched everywhere we can and rescued everyone we could though. Hopefully we’ll be able to find those last couple once it’s all over!

Post Arcade’s top 10 games of 2018
Quick warning to those in search of a little confirmation bias: Some of the year’s most popular plays — including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Fortnite, and FIFA 19 — just aren’t my bag. Power to anyone who enjoys these games, but I’m more interested in single-player games focused on storytelling. It’s just how I’m built.
With that in mind, 2018 was a bit of a mixed bag for me. There was a handful of truly standout games that satisfied my personal proclivities, but the overall depth of offering felt a little shallow. A sign, I suspect, of current gaming trends and appetites.
He said, she said: Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!
Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aimé on Labo's educational potential
Red Dead Redemption 2 review: An immersive and sympathetic tale of American outlaw life
And so my top 10 games of 2018 isn’t in fact a top 10 list at all, but rather a top five list, with an additional five titles I enjoyed added as honourable mentions in no particular order simply because I feel an illogical need to adhere to the tradition of a list comprised of 10 items.
Red Dead Redemption 2.
1. Red Dead Redemption 2 (Xbox One, PS3, PC)
Rockstar’s simulation of the Old West (or a couple thousand miles east of the Old West, if we’re being geographically technical about it) gives players a deeply authentic taste of what outlaw life was like a little over a hundred years ago. More than that, it delivers a profoundly tragic tale about a man who knows right from wrong and too often chooses the latter. Laugh all you like at the admittedly riotous horse fail videos that have been popping up on YouTube since its release; the moving story at the heart of this classic oater is going to be studied and dissected by critics and game design students for years to come.
God of War.
2. God of War (PS4)
Mockingly referred to as “Dad of War” prior to release due to its focus on the relationship between series protagonist Kratos and his son, this renewal of one of Sony’s most beloved franchises is daring, beautiful, and emotionally poignant. It picks up with everyone’s favourite musclebound demigod trying to create a new life in a land far away from the chaos he authored in Greece, only to come face to face with a fresh pantheon of angry deities. The real emphasis, though, is on Kratos’s interactions with his son, a constant companion for whom he feels an almost paranoid responsibility after the death of his mother. This more insular narrative tack results in the franchise’s best storytelling, by an Olympic mile.
Detroit: Become Human.
3. Detroit Become Human (PS4)
An absolutely enthralling depiction of a world in which believably humanoid androids exist and are at the cusp of joining us on equal terms as sentient intelligences — assuming they can mount a successful revolution. Its narrative is spread across a cast of multiple protagonists, each of whom can die permanently based on the player’s irrevocable decisions. Like most works from designer David Cage, its status as game is debatable. It’s not about winning or mastering play mechanics so much as it is about making decisions based on your sense of mortality and morality. Add in some of the year’s best production values and a sci-fi subject that has always fascinated me, and this one was bound to be one of my favourites.
Below.
4. Below (Xbox One, Windows PC)
The latest from Toronto-based indie darling Capybera Games, Below is a deliciously mysterious little role-playing game set on an island in the middle of the ocean. Travelers come, one by one, to discover the secrets lying at the atoll’s core. Nothing is explained; you’ll need to riddle out the purpose of everything you find. And when you die, you die forever. You’ll begin again as a new adventurer on the beach, all of your gear lost, forced to retrace the path of the previous hero. But not to worry; the cave dungeons are different for each traveler, and if you’ve done a thorough job of exploring you’ll have found shortcuts that will quickly lead you back to where the last hero perished. It’s atmospheric, splendidly scored, deeply challenging, and full of discovery.
5. Tetris Effect (PS4)
It seems odd that a Tetris game released in 2018 would compete for a spot on a list of the year’s best, but Tetris Effect is that game. Chalk it up to Zen. Tetris Effect is the most chill game I’ve played in years, with absolutely mesmerizing visual effects and a terrific soundtrack. It knowingly borrows from another great puzzler called Lumines by mixing a variety of block themes and aural soundscapes into its classic puzzle play, but it kicks it up a notch by adding virtual reality to the experience. Play with a PSVR headset and headphones on and you’ll be transported to another world, utterly immersed in orgasmic block-stacking pleasure. Well, perhaps that’s a tiny overstatement, but I doubt you’ll find a more pleasing puzzle game released in 2018.
And now the runners up…
Octopath Traveler.
Octopath Traveler (Switch)
This Japanese role-playing game from the folks behind the Bravely Default series has a terrific aesthetic that combines old-school graphics with modern filtering for a delicious diorama-like visual effect. It also tells a set of surprisingly grown-up fantasy tales centred on a group of memorable heroes, each of whom has unique talents and abilities that help them not only in the game’s tough turn-based battles, but also in bypassing more creative narrative obstacles while exploring.
Forza Horizon 4.
Forza Horizon 4 (Xbox One)
This open world racer is stuffed with enough activities to keep players busy for an hour or more every night for months on end. You’ll race on road and off, collect hundreds of real rides, take on rivals, shoot professional looking photos, go in search of well-hidden collectibles, and earn an almost endless procession of little rewards that will keep luring you into just one more race well into the wee hours. That it might also be the prettiest car game around at the moment is just gravy.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (PS4, Xbox One, Windows PC)
Huge and beautiful, this ambitious adventure set in Ancient Greece combines satisfying exploration of land and sea, delivers an impressive roster of historical locations and characters, and serves up some surprisingly challenging action. The sense of discovery is terrific, especially when exploring ruins that were considered old even in the time of Socrates. It eventually begins to grow a bit repetitive — you can only invade and conquer so many fortresses before it starts to feel more task than treat — but the elements focusing on characters and plot never grow old.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider (PS4, Xbox One, Windows PC)
The third chapter in Square Enix’s Lara Croft reboot doesn’t reinvent the wheel — we still spend our time hunting, crafting, exploring tombs and solving puzzles — but it does refine it. Using Lara’s bow, for example, now feels so intuitive and empowering that it makes other weapons feel passé by comparison. The real star, though, continues to be our heroine. Thoughtful, sympathetic, and compelling, she’s one of the most well rounded and fully developed protagonists appearing in games today, female or male. At this point seeing her in a new game almost feels like going to visit a very good friend.
Ashen.
Ashen (Xbox One, Windows PC)
This one’s like a Dark Souls game with, for lack of a better term, a soul. And a surprisingly gentle one at that. It’s got the core ingredients of one of From Software’s punishing role-playing games — including challenging block, dodge, and strike combat; severe consequences for dying; and a cleverly designed open world that rewards careful exploration — but it replaces darkness with light, and a sense of negativity with cautious optimism. You’ll be challenged throughout and recompensed for your determination and grit, but more than that you’ll feel as though you’re working toward a better world. It’s not what you’d expect from this sort of game, but it is oddly pleasing.

Note
Probably an odd question, but what do you think the speech patterns of all the characters are? Just the way each one talks and all that
I can’t promise I’ll do all of them or that they’ll all be good (mainly because talking about anything involving analysis of auditory speech isn’t my strong suit) but I’ll try to do a few of them.
Also my sibling @theirkenshavethetardis (who has said themself that they don’t really know a lot about video games) added some of their own headcanons, which I’ll post in the keep reading link below.
~~~~~~~~~~
(BotW) Link: He doesn’t speak, he mostly gestures and whatnot.
Samus: Pretty blunt and straightforward but not rude, will crack a sarcastic joke with a straight face.
Fox: Straightforward and focused, speaks more analytically than someone like Samus or Falco, and he tends to be more polite (especially towards authority figures).
Bowser: A bit more rude and snappy (as one would expect), he tends to talk big and exaggeratedly, and while he does use insults he doesn’t use them as often as others expect from him.
Ice Climbers: They tend to speak more politely and positively, and they often speak in unison.
Marth: Also polite, but in a more apologetic way; he tends to speak more negatively (but not in a “you must be fun at parties” kind of way).
Meta Knight: He tends to speak very formally, to the point where it takes someone a second to process the fact that he essentially said “I’m off to stab God” with different words.
R.O.B. (not legible by most people): Speaks literally and somewhat formally usually, but has wayyyyyyyyyyyy too much sass to be considered “formal”.
Lucas: Casual, he tends to speak a bit quietly, but he references memes more frequently than most others in Smash.
Wii Fit Trainers: They’re pretty polite, although a bit more serious usually–they’re not very formal, but you wouldn’t call them casual either.
Palutena: Somehow both the extreme ends of casual and formal, and serious and jokey. Graceful and divine if you’re not well acquainted with her, but the embodiment of chaos to those who know her well.
Shulk: Speaks scientifically because he is a scientist but also pronounces “sauce” to rhyme with “horse” like a wrong person would do.
Inklings: Use a lot of slang and tend to speak casually; they all also reference memes a lot.
Ridley: Manages to combine screeching with the speech patterns of the worst person you’ve ever met but like, somehow with everyone at the same time constantly.
Simon: Formal and serious and tone, and speaks with a mid-to-late 1600s dialect.
Sibling’s additions:
Mario: Talks quickly and gestures a lot. Gets loud without meaning to when he’s excited.
Dr. Mario: isn’t this just mario wtf
Donkey Kong: He Monkiy
Yoshi: Yoshi noises.
Kirby: Mostly makes baby noises. Occasionally references a meme. Once Sans got him to recite the entirety of Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up.
Pikachu: Mostly Pikachu noises. Uses emphatic gestures to get its point across.
Pikachu Libre: Pikachu but in Spanish
Luigi: I like to imagine him having a bit of a stutter, and that it gets worse when he’s nervous.
Jigglypuff: Jigglypuff
Peach: Her voice is almost musical. She could run an ASMR youtube channel in her free time if she wanted, and no one can prove that she DOESN’T.
Daisy: Swears like a sailor, which shocks a lot of people at first. She’s very loud and brash and brings life to any conversation.
Bowser: Yells most of the time without meaning to, but if he’s upset he gets very whiny and grumbly like a small child.
Pichu: Pichu
Spiky-eared Pichu: Pichu
Mewtwo: Mostly speaks normally, but occasionally finds an interesting word online or something and will use any excuse to repeat that interesting word because it sounds nice.
Mr. Game & Watch: Beeps a lot. The beeping intensifies with emotion.
Wario: Meme-loving fuck
Sonic: He has big ADHD brain and sometimes his thoughts are faster than his mouth, so he’ll trip over his words or say the wrong thing.
King Dedede: Occasionally he’ll forget a very common word and become frustrated, halting a sentence or conversation so he can try to find the word he was looking for. Often, he’ll remember the word hours later and shout it without context.
Lucario: Lucario (”You know Lucario can use telepathy right?” “Oh. What did I put for Lucario?” “’Lucario’” “No thoughts, head empty.”)
Charizard: Charizard
Ivysaur: Ivysaur
Squirtle: Squirtle
Diddy Kong: Is monkee
R.O.B.: He sure does beep a lot
Villager(s): When no one else is around, they revert to their true language: Minecraft villager noises
Wii Fit Trainers: Both have a hard time turning off their “professional” voice, and will sometimes say things like “Great job!” or “Remember to control your breathing” in contexts outside of fitness training.
Rosalina: She whispers her thoughts to her lumas, even when they aren’t thoughts she means for others to hear. This makes it easy to know pretty much everything about her.
Greninja: Greninja.
Duck Hunt Duck: Quack
Duck Hunt Dog: Boof
Shulk: Is really feeling it (They asked if Cloud was “the guy who’s really feeling it” and now insists that Shulk is just Cloud but younger)
Isabelle: Sounds like she’s in customer service, complete with “how can I help you today?” and “sorry for the inconvenience”, but that’s actually just how she talks
Incineroar: Incineroar
Piranha Plant: Mostly plant noises
Joker: Makes batman references because if he doesn’t, his name is a waste. No I don’t understand who or what this character actually is. Fight me.
Sans: Always sounds dead tired, even though he sleeps half the time. His puns are legendary.
