The TV hums softly as a random sitcom you've not gotten the chance to see yet flickers across the screen. You know you should turn it off, it's distracting you from completing your essay, one you've been procrastinating about finishing, but the background noise is comforting enough to let you keep it on, even if you'll have to rewatch it all later.

“Need help with that?”

You jump at the sudden noise, pen now clattering on the floor and rolling dangerously close to the sofa. You look up at where the voice came from, only to be met with a freshly shaven Miguel.

Embarrassment burns the back of your neck as you shift on the plush cushion of the sofa. The only thing covering the crinkled page of your otherwise barren notebook is an array of flowers around the margin and random notes scribbled out in heavy, blotchy lines.

“Am fine,” you smile, fingers spreading out to hide your work, or lack of.

Miguel just scoffs at you before pushing your hand away. “Such detailed notes,” he chides.

“It's meant to be an essay, but thanks anyway.”

You hear him stifle a laugh that you pray is sympathetic and not as amused as it sounds. It's shameful how far behind you are on your schoolwork when you have someone peering over your shoulder.

You aren't quite sure why you're so pent up on impressing Miguel, a man who is staying at his friend's house for some unbeknownst reason.

He sits down on the sofa next to you, a respectful distance but you can still smell his overbearing cologne and hair gel fusion. The sofa sinks slightly at his weight, a low creak eminating through the room.

He laughs, “let me help.”

Irritation bubbles deep in your stomach but you try to push it away, ignore it and keep going with the conversation. But when he acts so casual, even though he's stolen your bedroom, your only haven in this monstrosity of a household, you can’t help but feel annoyed with him.

“I doubt it,” you quip with an air of ignorance, fingers drumming erratically on the inky pages, “this is biology, aren't you like a chemist or something?”

A smirk curls at the corner of his lips at your sudden attitude, but he doesn't comment on it, leaving your opinion of him more distasteful than ever. “Well my degree says organic chemistry and molecular biology, so you're both wrong and right.”

“Mmm, so either, you're loaded, or up to your neck in debt.” you don't even try to hide the snark in your voice, “considering the fact that you’re staying here, I'm guessing student loan got the better of you.”

He scoffs at you, hand clasped to his chest in feigned hurt. “I'll have you know, I have a well-paying job, thank you very much.”

You flip your notebook shut, a small sense of relief washing over you now that disgrace of an essay is hidden, and shift to face him. “Then why are you here?”

He swallows, hard, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down. His gaze flickers between your face and the wall behind you, discomfort colouring his expression. The atmosphere of the room shifts entirely, and suddenly you feel guilty for hating him. Maybe he didn't mean to take your room, not on purpose anyway.

“I lost my house, not… not because of money or anything,” he pauses, plush lips pursed into a tight grimace before he continues, “didn't get a very good divorce lawyer.”

“I'm… sorry?” you've never been good at sympathy, always pushed the hard topic of emotions onto someone else so you can focus on something you're actually good at. But now, some weird part of you wants to comfort him.

“Hmm?” he looks back at your eyes, your breath catching in your throat, “Not your fault, querida, I was a silly man who did silly things. I made a mistake and lost the love of my life.”

“Don't say that.” you hate the way your voice softens. You want to keep this burning resentment for Miguel, loathe him for all eternity, it might seem petty but he deserves it. Yet, you want to pull him close, tell him to stop being so hard on himself and run your fingers through his hair until his jaw unclenches.

He shakes his head, casually, as if it was never that important.

“I couldn't stay faithful and I paid the price, she has everything she deserves leaving me with… nothing.”

An awkward silence fills the room. You don't know what to say to that other than, I take back my kindness and spit in your face for cheating on your wife.

“She was amazing, so full of life, and then one day… we just stopped clicking,” he leans back against the sofa, head craning back so that he's forced to stare at the yellowing ceiling, “it wasn't a spur of the moment, because I got bored thing. We had stopped loving each other, she had anyway.”

You reach out, your fingers brushing against his much more calloused, harsh ones causing the hairs on the back of his neck to stand on end. You give his hand a gentle squeeze that lasts a little longer than intended, but the sweetness of the action doesn't go unnoticed.

The upbeat theme tune from the TV suddenly blares out from the speakers causing the two of you to startle. Your fingers tighten around his on instinct but you immediately pull your hand away.

Miguel chuckles a low, mellow sound that makes your ears perk up. “Sat on the remote,” he says, pulling it from under his thigh.

“Scared the shit out of me, Migs- Miguel,” you breathe heavily.

He nods, smiling uneasily, praying that the hammering of his heart is from the sudden shock and not from the kindness you displayed. But deep down, he knows the truth.

On 26th March 1797, James Hutton, the Scottish chemist and geologist, died.

Farmer and naturalist James Hutton is credited with being the founder of modern geology. The first to determine that the Earth is millions of years old, Hutton believed our planet is continually being formed. James Hutton was born in Edinburgh in 1726. He went on to study medicine and chemistry at Edinburgh University, and in Paris and Leiden. He took his degree in 1749.

In 1750 he returned to Edinburgh and resumed chemical experiments with friend James Davie. Their work on the production of sal ammoniac – a salt used for dying and working with brass and tin – led to a profitable partnership. Hutton moved to Slighhouses, a lowland family farm, in the 1750s. He spent 14 years running the farm. This gave him an interest in how land changed with the forces of wind and rain.

In 1753 Hutton became interested in studying the surface of the earth. He went on to devote his scientific knowledge, powers of observation and philosophical mind to the newly-named subject of ‘geology’.

Hutton went on a geological tour of the north of Scotland with George Maxwell-Clerk (the great-grandfather of the famous physicist James ) in 1764. He let his farms to tenants in 1768 and returned to Edinburgh. Between 1767 and 1774 he was closely involved with the construction of the Forth and Clyde canal.

Travels in Britain and abroad, as well as a time farming in Berwickshire, gave Hutton the opportunity to observe different rocks. He was intrigued to find fossilised shells high above sea level, and puzzled over other geological features. Hutton’s thinking was then influenced by reading about Joseph Black’s experiments with heated limestone, and by the proof of the power of heat demonstrated by James Watt’s steam engines. Hutton began considering the centre of the Earth as a massive heat source, where continuous processes destroy and reform rocks — the 'uniformitarian’ theory of geology. That led to his belief that the Earth was millions of years old.

Other scientists and philosophers vehemently disagreed with him. Many of these were 'catastrophists’ who believed that changes in geology happened as a result of natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions or floods. The debate continued for several decades during the 19th century, until finally geologists became reconciled to Hutton’s theory.

In 1785 Hutton presented his findings to the newly formed Royal Society of Edinburgh. He died on 26 March 1797 and was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh in the part of the graveyard known as the “Covenanters Prison”

Five years after Hutton’s death, mathematician John Playfair published 'Illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of the Earth’. This volume contained a summary of Hutton’s 'Theory of the Earth’ alongside numerous additional illustrations and arguments.

In a poll, James Hutton was voted the seventh most popular Scottish scientist from the past. It is remarkable that men like Hutton , David Hume, Adam Smith, Dugald Stewart, Thomas Reid, and countless others all came out of Scotland in the same era, all within less than a hundred year period, their thoughts and works were spread throughout an ever growing world as part of the Scottish diaspora, the era became known as The Scottish Enlightenment.

When it's not raining, or at least not raining much, and they need something--milk for the tea only one of them drinks, to smell the old books at the charity bookshop--or want something, like a bag full of new old records or needle and thread to reattach a fallen button, or even when all they need or want is to feel daylight on their faces and to be together, wherever they are, Adam and Harry walk holding hands or touching each other's arms or waists, side by side taking up most of the width of the pavement. They are as satisfied to walk nowhere, just a loop that takes them back to the block of flats where they are still the only souls in residence, as they are to walk to the Tesco or the chemist's or the chip shop where Harry breathes in deep draughts of oily-salted air and sighs delight just as if he were eating a whole bagful of vinegary chips.

When the sun sets and the flat dims, they are both more aware of being alone--together, of course, but together alone--and even though it is a deep groove each of them has become accustomed to, lazing there, settled, caught in syrupy inertia that encourages staying down rather than ever attempting the treacherous slogging climb back up, alone is knife-edged and sharp-scented and thickens their throats with unshed tears even now. Adam shrinks into it, forgets to say aloud the things he thinks, accustomed as he has become to having no one nearby to hear them; he observes as if from a distance, stoic and still. Harry's sense of alone is of a space that wants filling, a creeping threatening something than can be outtalked, outrun, ignored in favour of noise, words, music, anything, anything to keep that thing at bay, just beyond, don't look at it and it won't find you.

Harry draws Adam out: asks him what he's thinking, turns on the telly and pats the spot beside him on the sofa, tells the stories of his scars. Adam draws Harry in: strokes his hair in a way that makes his eyelids heavy and his limbs languid, talks softly so that Harry must lean close and concentrate, holds his hand and now and then kisses his thumb or the knob of bone that juts out at the corner of his wrist.

In the dark they move beside each other, inside each other, humming in harmony, hands here and here, holding close, closer, their arms around each other containing the whole, safe world, the world they are creating together, in all the ways they have to touch and talk and walk together, feeling daylight on their faces even under covers, under cover of dark, the dark that used to frighten them but where they find the hands and arms that hold them, the whispers that now that I have you there is nothing to fear, now that I have you we need not be alone, now that I have you I will never, never, let you go.

Miss Anide is a 37yr old chemist who is very much not doing normal chemistry. In her early 20s, she lost a lover dear to her, and began spiralling after she failed to clone her. Now she's been trying to make a chemical that can bring people back from the dead and has taken many lives while doing so. And kill her boss while she's at it.

Her favourite experiment was on someone named Malley, who she successfully managed to get her boss's conscious into and get them out of her way. It was also the most interesting to watch.

You should vote for her because she's also a mother. The clone she failed to make ended up as her daughter and she loves Allay so much. She may be a little evil but she would never hurt a child. She has love in her heart even if it's violent.

Angel also loves cupcakes and would eat them in one go.

Ps. She has cybernetic tentacle limbs that come from her back! Cool!

When she’s not conducting weird experiments for mysterious benefactors (or just for personal enjoyment), she’s hanging out with her epic and cool wife Alice!!

Although Diana can be a lil withdrawn, Alice’s optimistic and excitable personality really brings out the best in her!! They do almost everything together: Baking, stargazing, long walks on the beach, vivisecting people…

We all know Bruce is a tea guy, it calms him down. As much as he’s surrounded by coffee, he’s pretty adamant on having tea instead.

He’s actually pretty good at cooking, he just doesn’t do it often. I mean- He’s a chemist, and has a degree in it.

Bruce is also like the middle ground of the Avengers, you really can’t be mad at the guy so he’s the mutual friend amongst all. Y’know?

I saw a headcanon where Bruce likes to eat vanilla frosting from the tub, and I personally want to give you a shoutout and a little kiss on the head. I love you and your headcanon and I think about it everyday.

Bruce’s canonical first name is Robert, I don’t care why he uses his middle name, trauma related or not, but every time someone addresses him as Robert he starts looking around in alarm like a caveman spongebob before realizing you’re talking to him.

His wardrobe consists mainly of formal casual, like that purple shirt I love so much and casual wear, like oversized band t-shirts and stuff. He doesn’t have any bright warm colors like red or orange and he doesn’t wear flannel.

I like to think when he first started in the whole science thing, he would always have band-aids all over his hands and arms.

He’s a weighted blanket type of guy, he really likes his blankie ok?

I think he’d really like swimming, he learned it exercised all of his muscles so it’s the only sport he’s ever taken up.

As much as I love the fact he listens to classical music, he needs to get better music in his arsenal. Let’s be honest, there are WAY BETTER ORCHESTRAL SONGS ON SPOTIFY HE JUST NEEDS TO FIND THEM.

He plays piano, he looks like a piano kid. No other instrument, just piano.

He’s the type of student to be good at all subjects but excel in his topic. Like- he’s a straight A student, but when it comes to science he just becomes god.

His gym grades are build on his participation, he participates but he’s so bad at physical activities istg

He likes any type of puzzle except a select few, also- he hates jigsaw puzzles

I don’t really personally like Bruce and Natasha together?? I don’t understand how people saw chemistry, so I just wanted to say Bruce just wants a relationship, he wants to love and be loved. Bruce somewhat saw that in Natasha but it really just didn’t work out for him.

He actually has pretty good posture, as much as he scrunches over when working, he’s got incredibly good posture.

I feel like he’s got this hopeless romantic to him, like- he’s the type of guy to bring you flowers if you date? I feel like he’s got this classic idea of what a lover should be, y’know?

He doesn’t know how to ride a bike, or do some things usually taught to children by parents. His mom couldn’t teach him everything unfortunately.

This is kind of a two parter, how did Waston get wrapped up in all this and why didn't he go to the authorities? Like I get werewolves and undead are hard to believe but Hyde is a wanted man right?

That one was tricky. Watson is employed at first to track down the notes of the missing and presumed dead Dr Henry Jekyll, renowned chemist rumored to have been experimenting with a serum that can separate good from evil. In the AU it's not widely know that Jekyll and Hyde are the same entity. By the time they figure it out they are all too deep in and so desperate to get Larry's curse under control that Watson has held off on alerting the authorities. Though he fully intends to once their mission is over. Watson doesn't like having to work with Edward Hyde. Not one bit. but he does want to help Larry and Quincey and keep them safe. He also bonds with Adam, feeling very sorry for the Frankenstein creature and wanting to show him that the world has changed and there is a place for him in it. Admittedly it's a stretch, some suspension of disbelief is required to make it work but hopefully not too much. Watson is, as of the AU, also emotionally vulnerable and alone. Sherlock Holmes has disappeared on a case involving a vampire attack and is thought to be dead. Watson is very raw as this is not the first time he's lost Sherlock but this time may be permanent and he's barely coping. He's doing his best to solve cases in Holmes stead and as the undead keep rising he dedicates himself to their eradication once and for all. Deep down he's also hoping that if he stays with this group he'll find his friend alive somehow.

15th April 1710 saw the birth of William Cullen, physician, chemist and metallurgist in Hamilton.

Quite a day for the physicians/educators and key figures in The Scottish Enlightenment.

Cullen was born in Hamilton and educated at Glasgow where he became Professor of Medicine before moving to Edinburgh to take up a sequence of professorships at the University. Like a true "lard o' pairts" he became First Physician to the King in Scotland and President of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. In addition, he was a founder member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

William Cullen was a key figure in the Enlightenment. He was a friend of Adam Smith and David Hume but his achievements have not been so well recognized. Cullen was a great teacher who explored the relationship between medicine and science in a spirit of liberal inquiry and he played a major role in establishing the Edinburgh of his day as the world’s foremost medical centre. He attracted many students from overseas, and the medical schools and institutions founded by his pupils set the pattern for medicine in North America.

It was in Edinburgh, in 1756, that he gave the first documented public demonstration of artificial refrigeration. He used a pump to create a partial vacuum over a container of diethyl ether, which then boiled, absorbing heat from the surroundings. This created a small amount of ice, but the process found no commercial application.

William Cullen introduced the terms Neurosis and Neuroses and gave descriptions of anxiety disorders, eating disorders and other psychological problems 100 years before such disorders were acknowledged and accepted by physicians in general It was for these reasons that the Eating Disorders Services for adults was named the Cullen Centre by NHS Lothian.

He died on 5th February 1790 at his country house at Kirknewton in Midlothian, he is buried in the village Cemetery.
