Prompt 131
Okay, so first of all Dan would like to say it’s not his fault. Ellie was the one to bring some unknown object into the speeder and Jazz was the one driving. Or had Sam been driving- didn’t matter! It wasn’t his fault, he wasn’t the one shooting at them, he wasn’t the one to break whatever, he was not the one to open a stupid portal, and so it wasn’t his fault!
So why is he now like, five years old, and why is the speeder crashed in some sort of corn field. Why is everyone- except for Jazz whose now like six- also like three at most?! And- oh fuck the door just opened and… okay that’s a kid. Like, nine at most.
A kid and an adult, who he hadn’t noticed at first so again, it’s not his fault if he hissed at them and tried to hide his not-siblings behind him. It’s also not fair they’re apparently stuck to ghost speak for who knows how long, but at least they can understand the people.
“Martha, get some blankets, it’s happened again!”

Miko, playing a online game on her phone: 何こいつら?うざいんだけど死ね!!!
(Translation: Who is this guy? His annoying- JUST DIE.)
Optimus, who was working on decoding the Iacon database now looking at Miko: ミコ、そのような言葉は使わないようにしてくれ。他人の死を願う事はよくない。わかったか?
(Translation: Miko, please refrain from using such language. It is not good to wish upon someone’s death. Do you understand?)
Miko: はぁーい🫤
(Translation: Fine🫤)
Jack and Raf, who were playing video games now staring at the two just casually having a conversation in a whole different language:

I've been quiet these days... It's because I co-wrote and published a bilingual children's book set in my home country! Written in English and Spanish, my book is titled JUANITA and it's about the contemporary migrant experience in the Caribbean from a child's perspective.
Tumblr media
JUANITA is the ideal tool for both children and adults to learn English or Spanish as a second language. It features a main story, reading comprehension questions, vocabulary lists, and written reflection exercises.
And guess what! It's available right now worldwide on Amazon in both Kindle and paperback format!
Link to Kindle purchase: here!
Link to paperback purchase: here!
Link to Goodreads page: here!
Give us a purchase, rate, and review if you would like! For language learners and people looking for Hispanic and/or Caribbean representation, JUANITA is my recommendation to you!

not to be controversial on side but I hate it when people tell you to watch/read children's stuff for language learning. it's extremely excruciating for my brain to have to subject to those because I feel like I'm being talked down to. and it's worse when the "morals" are actually so bad it's not even a little bit entertaining. I'd much rather look for graded stuff made by adults for adults. this is also why I study a lot because when you get to an intermediate level, you don't have to deal with those anymore. you can just dive right in and actually enjoy engaging with the language via media.

I'm reading my way through the Alfons Åberg children's picture books translated to Mandarin Chinese I meantioned earlier.
And in 放松点,爸爸 (Flyg! Sa Alfons Åberg) there was a sentence with grammar that interested me.
他刚刚在玩,玩得很开心-把家里弄得很乱。
which i suppose means something like
"He had just been playing, and playing very happily, and thus made a real mess of the house."
Here's the illustration of this situation:
Tumblr media
It interested me first because I don't think I've encountered "progressive 在" together with something like 刚刚, which places the action of 玩 at a time before the time of the story's viewpoint.
The second thing was 家里 as the object of the last clause. I find it's easy from an English speaking perspective to think of 家里 as a prepositional phrase "in the house", which couldn't be an object in English and similar languages. But I suppose 家里 is actually closer to a noun phrase.
(I do have a book on Chinese morphology at home but I'm taking a bit of a break from it right now...)

It's been, like, 5 years and I've just realised that "house of (the) Lustrous" and "the Lustrous' house" don't mean the same thing.
Tumblr media
I went with "house of the lustrous" because it sounded similar to "land of the lustrous". I didn't take into consideration the tittle implies a family (and a rolay one on top of that) and NOT a building, the later being my original intention.

mmm essay about sally and kid gort in the tags (cw for child abuse, mentions of suicide, animal cruelty and a murder attempt. i always hope i don’t have to say this but just in case: i don’t excuse or condone any of her or gort’s behaviour at all.) this is literally not even touching upon everything i have to say because i hit the fucking tag limit lmao. NOBODY READ IT’S BAD BRAINSTORMING I JUST NEEDED TO GET IT OUT SOMEHOW
#thinkin too much about gortie side characters again.#sally this time and why she specifically talks about him the way she does#like dravo is obviously still shitty but to me he was. ‘just ‘neglectful#while sally actively hated and even felt terrorised by her own child#like. it’s not like i don’t understand her at all.#imagine you and your love don’t have much besides each other and your shop and you get pregnant and ready to raise a child#only for it to not be a child he didn’t and doesn’t cry ever and he learns everything so much sooner than most but then he never calls you#his parents and it’s not just a petty thing kids do sometimes you feel that he doesn’t see you as family and the worst part is that you#agree deep down#and as he gets older he doesn’t have any friends and actively rejects the notion of the entire concept#but then as time passes you hear about how he has entire groups of children following him and then several of them commit suicide#and that thing coming to sit with you and dravo at the dinner table says that he did what you did last week when the axe to chop wood broke#and you discarded it and got a new one#and he has these habits of ripping out flowers and making sure that they don’t regrow#and then you hear rumours about a friend’s daughter’s cat disappearing and think nothing of it#until you visit his tree house a month later and find a declawed cat and birds with clipped wings and crushed bugs that he keeps fondly#and then you see him with other children and they don’t know and his face is different and body language is entirely different#and were it not for the fact that you know better you would never see anything but a normal child#and you know that you are one who painstakingly brought this thing that should not be into the world and so you decide to end it all one da#and go to him as he’s asleep with the knife shaking in your hand#but he cries when you’re above him! screams at the top of his lungs!#so you beg for forgiveness even though you don’t deserve it through tears but as soon as the knife is put away you see the act drop and fee#his clever fingers having twisted your brain inside and out and you know that you can do nothing#and so the opportunity arises to at least remove him out of your life if not everyone’s lives and you take it immediately.#but you heard him talk. how he will close his fist around the world one day. and you know that it is not a matter of if but when.#like. imagine that. jesus dude.#like i hc her as someone that is messy and does not know a lot about life and she certainly wouldn’t have been a good mother but the love#or at least desire to love is there somewhere. and believing that having a child is really the only somewhat meaningful thing she can do#with her life. she’s not some hero or rich or anything of note. so there’s a lot obligation and not genuine desire for family here.#but she never really got the chance to be an actual mother in the first place so. who knows what that might have looked like

I am a person with a large vocabulary (in English)
I tend to use larger and more pretentious words because I like the way they sound and it's my humor. Words like rebuttal, amiable, quite, sustainable, appease able in my regular day to day conversations.
However with all this in mind, if I know another person has English as a second language AND are still learning, I would not hesitate to use a much more common vocabulary. If they are really new I would slow my speech, enunciate the important words and use basic sentence structure. To me this is common courtesy. I wouldn't assume by an accent or anything but, most of the time this works well.
Now, what I cannot for the life of me understand is how it is more acceptable for me to do this to a Child than a new English speaker.
I have had people ask me to not use bigger words around kids because they don't understand but those same people will mock those who are struggling with English. I do not get it. Kids need to soak in words. I got a large vocabulary by soaking it in from the adults around me.
Bottom line: kids need to be exposed to a large vocabulary. Adult foreign language learners are already trying as hard as they can, cut them some slack

Twitter is so fascinating. Watching people be like well I can't teach my child to read because I'm just too busy. Like if your kid can't read I can't Imagine how neglectful and probably abusive you are. Schools are equipped to teach kids to read. If they can't retain or reinforce the skills in any way it's not because they're just too stupid that's for sure.
