My Week(s) in Reviews: June 9, 2024

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (George Miller, 2024)

Disappointing. It's impossible to not compare this movie to Fury Road. The sad thing is, when you do compare this to Fury Road, every single aspect of it pales in comparison. Anya is really good, here, but just never feels like Furiosa. And Chris Hemsworth is a blast, but he goes full-ham in the most distracting way imaginable. Then there's Miller's direction, which is tedious compared to his work on Fury Road. The structure of the film is awkward, and the pacing is damn-near unbearable, draining the action set-pieces of almost all of the balls-to-the-wall adrenaline in which every single moment of Fury Road was drowning. And the cinematography is a complete bore compared to the eye-melting shots by which Fury Road was almost exclusively composed. All that being said, on its own, Furiosa is not a bad movie. Unfortunately, however, it's impossible to experience it on its own in a world where the infinitely superior Fury Road exists. - 6/10

In the Land of Saints and Sinners (Robert Lorenz, 2024)

I really like this brand of slow-burn, quietly human, small-town action-thrillers. Add in this stellar cast and that pitch-perfect climax, and this is the best of its kind I've come across in at least the past few years. - 9/10

The Beekeeper (David Ayer, 2024)

Far from good, but just action-packed enough to keep it from being a complete waste of time. - 4.5/10

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (Wes Ball, 2024)

The absence of Andy Serkis felt significant. But other than that, this wasn't bad. Overlong? Definitely. But far from bad. I don't have much to say, really. The mo-cap work was fantastic, and there were some really interesting/exciting set-pieces. The cast were pretty solid straight through, with the highlights definitely being Freya Allan and Kevin Durand, who steals every second of screen-time he has. - 8/10 For Reference... My Updated Scores for the New Planet of the Apes Films: Rise: 7.5/10 Dawn: 9/10 War: 9.5/10 Kingdom: 8/10

I also revisited Peter Jackson's The Frighteners and Christopher Landon's Happy Death Day & Happy Death Day 2U. The Frighteners is every bit as amazing as it was the last time I watched it, except for how poorly the effects have aged. And the Happy Death Day movies were just as fun as they were in cinemas. I really wish we'd get more of that concept and delivery, and more of Jessica Rothe as a scream queen.

#10 - Vaccine Horror: 23-year-old suffers devastating injury after being given three vaccines at once.

Within ten minutes of her injections, Alexis Lorenze went temporarily blind, began vomiting, and then things went horribly downhill from there.

Before Nurse Angela intervened, UC Irvine staff mocked Alexis's injuries, laughed at her, and subjected her to extreme delays when she requested help while suffering from unbearable pain.

After Alexis's horrific vaccine injury went viral, she was transferred to the ICU, likely due to the mounting public pressure on the hospital. And the doctor who mandated these shots on Alexis has since disappeared from the picture.

Thankfully, Alexis is slowly getting better and has regained vision in both eyes, but still suffers from setbacks and a great deal of pain.

Alexis says as soon as she starts getting “a little bit of strength back,” she’s going to join forces with the vaccine-injured community to take down the criminal medical system that injured her.

usually I would believe that unless there is a corpse we're shown, the character is not dead. but considering the show is on s8 now and we still have no chris in sight, I'm not convinced this time that he'll be back. even though his death scene really was sketchy. the dream flashback was in all twdu fashion a death fake out. but when those wanderes walked past his corpse... I was heartbroken. that said, they could still bring him back and I wouldn't even think of it as a retcon. I just don't think he'd be able to add to the story now without travis or nick around. ugh. I could have accepted it if lorenz' had wanted to leave the show and they had simply written him out by his request, but he's the total opposite; willing to continue chris' story and even play him as a villain 😭

I would have loved to see Chris come back and have a whole villain & redemption arc. But Season 8 just ended and that was the final season of FTWD, so we sadly did not even get a chance to get him back😭

27. Which character do you feel “meh” about?

Tbh, like... a lot of them. A lot.

40. What character do you always recruit, no matter which route you are playing and why?

LORENZ!!! LORENZ!!!!!! If I had to pick absolutely one single non-DLC character to recruit and couldn't recruit anyone else other than the students I started with, it would be Lorenz. I will not let him die, first of all. Secondly, he is far too precious to me to not recruit.

For DLC it's Yuri, and for non DLC it's Lorenz. Purple boys, purple boys, purple boys!

9. What is your favorite scene in the game (can be in the main story or a support convo)?

I'll name a few since I'm not sure which one I like most.

One is the BL post Lonato map with this conversation:

Firstly I like that he actually gets pissed off and snaps at Byleth. That's something the other lords don't do and it becomes a huge zzzz fest when there's so much of a lack of real emotion toward Byleth. Byleth being the player's proxy ended up with a lot unnecessary worship from the other characters, and though Dimitri also falls into that as literally every playable unfortunately does, he has the most tension and aggravation with Byleth that is out of genuine emotion. In the timeskip he doesn't put Byleth before literally everything ever and actually pushes them away. In this scene he was so angry and distraught that he outright snapped at Byleth for the first time. He catches himself, but he had a very realistic reaction to the options you're given to be able to say to him, where his first reaction is to snap regardless of the person but because of the situation.

The scene when Dimitri finds out after Edelgard being the Flame Emperor, after the cutscene. Again the voice acting work REALLY sold that scene. It helped with the intensity of the emotion and made all the lead up about Dimitri up to that point so much more worth it. Like, yes he could've been mad... but could he have been Chris Hackney mad?

AILELL! I really loved the scene when Rodrigue told Dimitri what's what! That wasn't a man trying to reason with his king. That was a dad trying to steer his son back onto the right path and scold him as needed. It's funny, because Rodrigue tells Byleth later that he doesn't have it in him to scold Dimitri, but he's the goddamn only one who did!

The scene with the man who admitted to having a hand in the Tragedy of Duscur. Dimitri's anger is very notable, but he has so much growth showing in that scene. You can tell he's fuming, but he still composes himself to be fair and understanding. Most people would hear something like that and send them to their death, but Dimitri holds off on that because he wants to consider the actual conversation before deciding anything.

At this point he doesn't want to kill people unless absolutely necessary, and he'd rather consider all his options for what to do before he takes this man's life - something he can never take back and has learned the hard way after taking many lives during the war. If the guy he had arrested was truly doing it for the welfare of Faerghus in his mind, that's something Dimitri also always keeps in mind as the prince/king, and he understands that sentiment. If the man was being genuine, Dimitri is able to understand it was not a wholly malicious act and doesn't want to immediately respond maliciously. I think it also takes a lot of self control to be able to do that given that his own father and best friend died because of something this guy was involved in.

That scene wasn't something that seemed to stand out to many people, but I love the growth Dimitri is shown to have there.
