Quick Animated Character Appreciation: ROTSM Kon-El Gives Me HEART ATTACK

Have I made it clear yet how much I enjoy this version of Kon-El? I don't think I have: This sugar-high-on-a-1000, raging-hormone/in-puberty, outdated slang-having, cocky kid was the best thing from the Reign of the Supermen movie and the entirety of that two-parter saga. He was such an adorably annoying little showoff and hustler (at least at one point with Clark) who you could tell had mountains more of depth beneath the surface just waiting to jump out! Perfect combination of Clark/Superman and Lex Luthor in every way, too! I love, love, loved it! He was exactly how the character should ideally be written and portrayed imo! (Side Note: Look at the tears that the girl behind him to our right [in the second image] is shedding! She adores this Kon-El that much. And I don't blame her!)

Superboy to a not-actually-dead Superman a few minutes after meeting him: *Probably dumps his ocean-sized amount of trauma onto him which Lex has already put him through in the short amount of time that he and Lex have known each other and been in contact* "...Seriously. A room full of hungry...bizarros."

A "resurrected", oddly calm yet probably very concerned Superman: "Sounds harrowing."

Superboy, now seeing his chance to hustle a new home with his other dad: "Soo, can I live with you or not?"

Superman with months-worth of 5 o' clock shadow: *Doesn't even get a chance to think it over yet, much less respond, due to them being interrupted by Steel The Third Wheel (but also doesn't say no)*

Gosh I'm so sad/mad we'll never get see him in Superman Media again because they permanently deaded that universe!! 🥺 (Plus they forced us to watch him get slaughtered!!!! 😩) I won't forget him anytime soon though!! He'll stay in my primary color-painted heart!!!! 💛❤️💙

it’s like no i don’t think theyre fucking or even necessarily have the desire to but yes i DO think they’re in love. and it sucks because there’s all these elements in their way but yes there is great love here… and i don’t mean good or righteous love, i just mean BIG. it takes up space and everyone can see it and it’s impossible to even truly be able to acknowledge it precisely because it’s so massive and suffocating. because i think lex has within him a great capacity for love and no one who truly wants it from him. so he projects all of it onto clark because clark wants it. and clark likes lex because he recognizes that there is something Different about both of them. clark is different but can’t express that and lex is visibly obviously different to everyone in smallville and clark sees him and thinks. there is something wrong with you on the outside that’s wrong with me on the inside. we are the same… and the real reason they’re so doomed isn’t because of The Narrative it’s because the entire relationship has been built in this cracked foundation of this mutual desperation to be able to give and take love. there’s this horrible deafening cry of please please please somebody see me love me pick me want me know me. and the entire thing is built on that and it’s not sustainable and it’s going to EXPLODE

i know that everyone's favourite form of clex in fandom is the smallville version of clex, since that is where the majority of clex fanart and fanfic originates from due to the friendship that clark and lex had in that show, but i've not watched smallville yet (i obvs will in the future i'm just a bit busy atm), so my current fav form of clex is the animated version from STAS and JLU. i love lex being an evil goddamn bastard and having this weird psychosexual obsession with superman, wanting to destroy him and control him and dominate him all at the same time, and not being able to choose which one he wants to do today. all the while clark is just standing there like "wow you're fucking insane"

Okay you all Bruce fans REALLY need to leave Lex alone because it literally makes no sense. Lex doesn't care about Bruce, Lex doesn't care about Batman, Lex doesn't care about Gotham!

I'm so f tired of coming to the tag dedicated to one of my fav characters only to see insecure Bruce Wayne fans crying and writing whatever horrible s**t they can come up with to "make fun" of Lex when we all know they are trying to prop Bruce up since apparently they can't deal with the fact that Bruce Wayne is a WHITE STRAIGHT RICH MAN that literally comes from generations of rich people that came from England and were more likely rich and noble ever since...

Bruce fans are so insecure about their supposed fav that they need to bring down a character that doesn't even care for Batman. Lex doesn't care for anyone but Superman and the Metropolis gang: Lex cares more about Lois, Jimmy, Kon, Jon, Lana, and literally any superfam character over Batman. Heck, Lex cares more about Batman's villains than Batman himself. So why do you all *need* to keep doing this? It's tiring, ridiculous and only shows huge ignorance on the canon material.

And that's something that has me DONE with batfam fans: They refuse to read the source material and feed themselves on ridiculous fanon media and semi official content like the webtoon and pretend that's what Batman is and then cry when they see that actual Batman is cruel, arrogant and sad. These batfam fans can't stand that in canon there's someone richer and smarter than Bruce that, hold on, doesn't care about Bruce or Gotham at all!

Sorry that Lex doesn't care about the bats? But you all batfam fans are so - irritating! Don't you all have enough villains obsessed with Batman? Why do you desperately need Lex? Why do you jealous over the Clex relationship so pathetically?

I know I talked about less than a week ago but aren't you, Lex fans, tired of putting up with this? Why is it acceptable to destroy such a beautifully written character like Lex to prop up Bruce? I am tired, and I won't hold my words back anymore.

HI! Okay. I know you already got a question about fic recs a month or so ago, but I've gotta ask. Do you have any Clex fic recs that aren't super Smallville-centric? I could never get into Smallville and am thus the most oppressed clex shipper ever /j

But! Yes! Do you happen to have any suggestions for stuff like that? I super don't mind if Smallville is canon to the fics, but stuff where it's not the main centerpiece is soooo slay *twirls hair*

you've got me operating on hard mode here because, as you said, most clex fic is pretty heavily based on smallville, but i think i at least have a few set post-series where the comics influence is a lot more prevalent, so hopefully some of these will be to your taste!

Looking Glass County by Astolat

this one is a universe swap fic where the smallville version of lex (post-series) gets switched with his comics counterpart. i don't think it necessarily takes a lot of smallville knowledge to follow it, since it's not super canon-compliant anyway, and it's really interesting to see how the characters bounce off of each other. if you like astolat's writing style, you might also like Revenge, Moving On, and/or Reconcilable Differences, all by the same author and all with mixed comics influences. (to the best of my memory, all of them are comics-y enough to follow without watching much smallville.)

Useful Arts by rivkat

this one is technically a sex pollen story but it's a very plot-heavy one and the sex pollen elements are really only present for the first half of the fic. rivkat's stuff is some of my favorite and i love their characterization for lex. most of their other fic (to the best of my memory) is more obviously based off of smallville, so this is really the only one i can rec for someone looking for comics-inspired characterization.

Counting the Days by tasabian

lex goes to prison for a crime he didn't commit. clark goes undercover to investigate. the premise is very fun, and it doesn't really lean on smallville lore too heavily. their fic tends to pull a lot from the comics as well as the DCAU, so even though all of them are labeled with smallville exclusively, they really use more of a blend of canon from various different sources, so i'd rec pretty much any of their works.

An Alienated Property by Kantayra

lex and clark trapped on a red sun planet together. this one was on my other fic rec post as a "comics" fic (even though it's tagged with smallville) but i wanted to include it here too because i just love the whole "red sun planet" trope that much. to my memory, all of their fic except for "Clark's Secret" are set post-series and can be read as comics-based.

Wien's Law by obscureshipyard

this fic is mostly a series of one-shots that are mostly a mix of character study and smut, so there's not a lot of plot to summarize, but notably, the lex in this fic is a trans man, which does feature pretty prominently, if that affects whether or not it interests you. this is the only fic on this list that is exclusively comics-based, specifically not using the backstory of lex growing up in smallville. this author's other stuff is a mix of smallville and comics-based, but i haven't read any of the rest of it, personally.

i'm sure there's plenty more out there because god knows i've only scratched the surface of their ao3 tag, but from a quick look through my bookmarks, these are the main ones that jumped out at me as being divorced enough from the events of the smallville to be enjoyable for a comics-only fan.
