Band of Fools

Now ongoing on AO3

Eddie lives, but between Chrissy’s death, Jason’s death, the town’s overall perception of him, and the state of his injuries; the government has decided Eddie Munson must be dead. He’ll get a new identity, a new life, far from Hawkins, Indiana, the moment he’s well enough to leave the hospital. They’ve got him in a guarded back room. Thankfully, they’re still letting the rest of the party visit him. Wayne’s the only person outside of them that was told Eddie lived, and even that was a fight. Eddie feels awful that Wayne’s life will be uprooted alongside his own, but his uncle tells him he’s just happy he’s alive. Whatever they gotta do to make sure he’s safe.

The problem is; Corroded Coffin. The band is devastated as the loss of Eddie. They’re angry with the whole town for how he was treated. They keep poking the bear. ‘The bear’ being anxious government agents that want all of this to go away quietly.

Steve sees it happening. The outbursts from the bandmates out in public followed by the ever watching plants in the crowds. They’re being followed. The government is assessing the risk. Steve knows Eddie’s recovery has been slow and painful. He nearly died fighting with them. Sacrificing himself. Steve owes him this. He knows he needs to be careful, inconspicuous. He makes sure he’s not being followed, and he goes to Gareth’s house, slipping into the garage from the window. He’s picked up some skills along the way. He waits. It takes an hour but the garage door slides open. Steve hides from view. The three of them shuffle in. They all look dejected. Steve knows the feeling.

Once the door has closed behind them, Steve carefully steps out from behind the storage boxes.

“I need you guys not to freak out-“

“What the fuck?!” The guys are on the defensive quickly. Steve winced.

“Sh- fuck. Shut up. I know- but listen you guys need to quiet down. You’re not safe.” He doesn’t know who could be listening even now.

“Yeah from assholes like you!” Gareth throws a can at his head, which Steve thankfully dodges. He really doesn’t need anymore head trauma in this lifetime.

“I know you don’t know me- or you do know me, but the old me. And I get not trusting that guy, but listen. You guys aren’t safe. You’re drawing a lot of attention to yourselves. I know you want to defend Eddie, clear his name and all that, but you’re being watched. You need to stop. I know that’s a lot to ask.” Steve’s never been great at explaining. He would have asked Robin to come along and help, but he knows she wouldn’t have approved of this little treasonous field trip.

“He didn’t do any of it. Eddie was a great guy, and this town fucking killed him. Why should we be quiet about that? Eddie always stood up for what he believed, and that’s what we’re doing for him now.” Jeff defended, looking like he was ready to add to Steve’s injuries.

“Who’s watching us?” Freak asked, quieter than the other two. He was staring at Steve, studying him.

“People who want all of this to go away.” Steve tries to make it as clear as possible without breaking NDAs that would likely get him killed too.

The three of them go silent, sharing looks, a silent conversation.

“Harrington… do you know what happened to him?” Gareth asks carefully, but there’s an edge, a hint of accusation.

Steve chews the inside of his lip. Maybe this was a horrible mistake. He just didn’t want to see anyone else get hurt. “Yes.”

The simple response hit the group with a shocking amount of force, like they all had to brace themselves from it.

“What- what happened to him? How did he…” Gareth sounded desperate.

“He got wrapped up in stuff out of his control, out of all of our control. You’re right though, he was a good guy. He never hurt anyone. But you need to listen, it’s all really complicated, but there’s people who need this story to stick. You all are making that harder, and I get it. I know how you’re feeling, but you’re going to get yourselves hurt. That’s not what Eddie would have wanted.”

“Don’t speak for him. You don’t fucking know him.” Jeff’s jaw set, his eyes were cast down. Steve could see the tears.

“I’m sorry, you’re right. He was your friend.”

“But how did he die?” Freak earned himself horrified looks from the other two, but they slowly turned their attention to Steve.

Steve couldn’t lie. He couldn’t describe some fake comforting version of Eddie’s death, and he definitely couldn’t tell them any version of the truth. “I… can’t.”

Freak’s eyes narrowed, but there was something behind them. A glimmer. “You can’t? You came all this way to, what? Protect us? From some mysterious villain out to get us for defending Eddie’s reputation. And you can’t even tell us how he died? And why you? Huh? Why is Steve Harrington, former king of hawkin’s high, delivering this warning? Eddie used to talk about you, your fall from grace. Said you had it coming, but he wondered, why it all went to shit. Why you started hanging around that new crowd. The same people who were in the news for all that weird shit with the kid. The body in the quarry… Eddie knew it all stunk. And now you’re here, vague warnings and looking beat to shit. A stranger telling us what Eddie would have wanted. So tell me Steve, will they find Eddie’s body in the quarry too?”

Steve clenched his jaw. His throat felt tight. This was a mistake.

Jeff looked like he was solving an equation in his head. He drew a sharp breath. “Is he-“

“Where the fuck is Eddie.” Gareth got in Steve’s face. He was shorter but he grabbed Steve by the collar with his non-casted hand, taking him by surprise.

Steve’s eyes were wide. How could he have seriously expected this to go well?

Vamp lilia was far too easy of an option so i went for something else that can bestow blessings jut like faes do ! Unicorn, he isn't on any particular side, just frolicking around. Lucky be the one who sets their gaze on such a rarity. pun intended

The other horses are... hiding as well yes but not as distant if you are their next meal. Kelpie Jade and floyd, wanted to keep them aquatic and creechur. They bite, they can shapeshift, good luck.

Lil Ortho vamp is looking around for his brother, very polite, will absolutely bite in defense do not be fooled by his tiny victorian child build.

Ace is the church's errand boy, janitor, altar boy, cook helper etc... He enrolled to be part of the hunter squad but wasn't deemed efficien enough. Stays just in case maybe just maybe Rollo changes his mind and takes him as a hunter. Hey he's got plenty of wits ! He will eventually succeed. (but he's so salty about it so jealous of deuce and epel)

Trey bakes the breads for the church, he can live off of refular food and just tries to live normally without being too tempted about the other kind of snacks he could have. Surely no one would dare just barge in the bakery call him out on his double nature, noo no one in the cast would think of that everyone is so polite !

Finally, Cater as a Rusalko (Rusalka but guy) He is sunbathing, chilling near another pond near fleur city. He might call you to come closer and keep you around to have a lightheatted chit chat ! Oh what happened to him ? sometimes he tells he drowned accidentally, sometimes he got drowned. No one really knows the truth.

y'know... for a setting that places so much importance in Language and does so many ice cool things playing with it (Correspondence/Discordance, Parabola & Irem, etc) i think there's a bit of a missed opportunity when it comes to the terms and words people use in their day to day life... like for example:

do you think radical revolutionaries would avoid words like "enlightening" in their vocabulary and flip them for LON-appropriate counterparts to signal their beliefs?

like substituting the word "light" with "blight". lol

similarly, pet names relating to light like "sunshine" kinda have a whole extra flavour tied to them, leaning into nostalgia, melancholy and/or danger depending on the people using it. irony, even

"honey" as a pet name also has extra connotations now and might actually bother some people instead due to the association with the drug...

do you think SMEN, taboo as it is, and seeking being a recognizable phenomenon even to the common londoner, would spawn swear words and insults? (imagine the weight of telling someone to Go Seek or Fall Down a Well)

the word "well" itself. well as an adverb, interjection, adjective. just. think about it. think about what it represents. idk something is happening to this word for sure

Why does Danny need a mask you might ask?

(no one asked lol) Jack made it so it could filter impurities from the environment 24/7, it's not really perfect but it helped him a lot early on, allowing him to be outside his coffin for a few minutes to an hr before his body starts shutting down

Damian might have accidentally gotten attached and doesn't want the others to find out about his friendship with the sickly meta child(they are literally the same age) especially since he doesn't think the overprotective father Danny talks about sometimes, who he suspects might be an ex convict, would allow Danny to talk to him anymore
