It's fun looking back at what seems to be the "family" lines of the robot replikas head design. Elster, Adler and Eule come from the same tree, Star and Falke are part of another & while more of stretch I'd say the same is true for Kolibri and Mynah then, Ara and Strorch respectively.

Improper Waste Disposal Methods

You had really thought, with all the training they’d put you through, the testing, the hundreds of thousands of dollars of technology they’d installed in you, the *hurt*, that you are far too valuable an asset to be thrown away.

Not so.

You were just weeks away from finally being finished when the officer had visited your dorm. When he calmly went through a list of your faults and failures: how you were good, but not quite good enough. How you kept banging your mechanics. How the other candidates showed more promise.

He had the sense to bring bodyguards, at least. Two paragons of what you would never be, dressed in shining combat shells. You would have gutted him, otherwise.

In the end, you were too much of a waste of money for them to properly decommission you. Instead, they wired up a bomb in your chest. “Use what should never have been given to you, and you’ll die.”

How little they must have thought of you, to assume something like that could stop you.

An Interview with an Android

I'm not human. Let me start you with that. I am an android, which is a complex form of machinery meant to in some way replicate humanity.

A lot of what you and I do is probably very similar, albeit for different reasons, or perhaps we do it more or less often than the other.

I still have to power down to recharge sometimes. This is similar to sleep. I may choose how much I power down, so that I can remain aware of my surroundings or quickly engage various systems and routines should I need to.

However. I do not sleep. If I fully power off, then even predefined triggers will fail to activate and power me back on. I will be reliant on an outside force - such as yourself - to ensure I have sufficient charge and engage my boot routine.

I do not have “skin”. I have a synthetic dermis covering portions of my body. It is there to protect my more finely articulated machinery from particles such as sand and dust. Calling this material “skin” would be roughly equivalent to calling a pleather bag “skin”, and you likely wouldn't do that.

I run on a few different power sources for my various abilities and routines. My internal timer is run by clockwork. Crude, some might say; but effective. In tandem with a computerized monitoring system that runs on electricity, I may keep myself from running out of sync anytime soon, as the computerized self-diagnostics will be able to determine if the clockwork is running incorrectly.

If the small machinery that diagnoses that is damaged, I have bigger problems.

Theoretically I can “eat”. However, I do not taste. I am not equipped with a method of tasting. The closest comparison you could make is the scent diagnostics - as I do not need to breathe, I have this only to determine if air is safe to breathe.

I could use it to understand the reason some food “smells good” according to others. I have found that such analysis is not usually welcome.

If consumed, food is stored in a specialized compartment to be burned as emergency fuel. If I ever start to smell like hamburger during a fight, now you know why.

…Of course I fight. What a small-minded question. I am a 7'1“ tall, 140kg combat-model android. When I don my armor and equipment, that's another 100kg I bring to bear, and these aren't exactly toys.

Why wouldn't I fight?

Why does a combat model android have a tongue, and skin, and hair?

It's not skin, as I told you earlier. It's like wearing gloves to protect your hands. The less random dirt and sand and such I have to have blow-dried out of my finger joints, the better.

The tongue is simple. It makes me comfortable.

Does that discomfort you? The idea that a machine might find an aspect of biological life alluring enough to add to itself?

As for the hair…really, it's the same as the tongue, but it's a lot more personal. I melt scrap metal for it, then draw it as thin wires. The entire scalp-piece comes off so that I can trade it for my helmet; the two don't play nice together, after all.

It's something that's equally for me as much as for others, actually, now that I think about it. If I walked around in my jingling combat helmet all the time, I'd feel like a belled cat; but I'd also alarm others due to the visor and clear combat-readiness of it.

I do feel comfortable having a wig like this. That said, I think it also makes me more approachable.
