Bird Symbolism in Revolutionary Girl Utena
There is quite a large amount of bird and bird-related imagery, symbolism, allegories and metaphors in Revolutionary Girl Utena, and i think all of them are very interesting. Here is a ~2000 word essay about the topic.
The Birdcage Garden: Anthy and Ohtori Academy
Tumblr media
This is perhaps the most obvious of the bird symbols in Utena. It is literally Anthy's cage. It is where she, as the Rose Bride, is supposed to spend her time watering the flowers. Touga talks about never letting her out of it once he wins her, and calls her a "lovely little bird." And doesn't that just sum up what so many people's idealized version of her is like? A pretty thing to be admired, only in captivity.
I think the birdcage can also be seen as a sort of microcosm of Ohtori Academy as a whole. Akio does call the school "a garden where people will never become adults," after all, and Anthy is not the only person trapped there, nor is she the only character associated with birds.
According to this analysis, "Ohtori" as a word can mean "big bird" in japanese, and is also a Japanese term for the Fenghuang bird in Chinese mythology, said to be "beautiful, immortal and rules over all birds." Sounds a lot like a certain someone in charge of this place, doesn't it? Which would make every person in Ohtori a bird, symbolically speaking, trapped in the cage that is the academy and ruled by Akio (who, despite being the biggest, and the one with the most control, is also a caged bird.)
Tumblr media
Additionally, the statue on the gate to the dueling arena is in the shape of a bird, before it transforms into a rose when opened. I am not sure exactly what this means, but I assume it is in some way symbolic of Akio, Anthy and Ohtori.
The Bird and the Window: Shiori and Juri
Tumblr media
The bird that flies into the window during Shiori and Juri's conversation in episode 17 is a Java Sparrow. Despite its name, it is a part of the Estrildid Finch family, but I think the symbolism for sparrows fits the context more, as they can represent love, devotion and compainionship, all of which are very relevant for Juri and Shiori.
Tumblr media
The bird is also the symbolic item for Shiori's black rose duel, which means we should associate the bird mainly with her. What, exactly, is the window, then? I think it is symbolic of Shiori's feelings for Juri, Juri's feelings for Shiori, or most likely both. The bird hits the window directly after Juri says "Is that all you have to say to me?" and turns to leave. The bird hits something it could not see in its flight, just as Shiori hits against something that hurts her, even if she doesn't understand it, in her conversation with Juri. The bird is shown to be lying still, presumably dead, after Juri reveals that she was never in love with the boy Shiori "stole" from her.
The bird is shown again after Juri throws her locket in the lake, and before Shiori finds it in her dorm. I've heard it discussed that this implies the bird retrieved the locket (probably through Anthy-as-Mamiya), and if the bird is symbolic of Shiori and the locket is symbolic of Juri's feelings for her, it would mean Shiori is the one to bring them back after Juri tries to rid herself of them. This makes sense.
The Bird Nest: Kozue and Miki
Tumblr media
The bird nest that Kozue rescues from the tree that is going to be cut down is symbolic of her and Miki. Or, at least they are symbolic of how Kozue views the two of them. The comparison is pretty straightforward; Kozue projects her and Miki's feelings of abandonment onto these baby chicks, who have been left behind by their parents, just like the two of them were when their parents divorced. I think she projects her protectiveness over her brother moreso than her own feelings about the whole thing, as Kozue likes to think of herself as very independent ("a wild animal") and very unaffected by it all. As seen by her attempt to save the birds in the first place, she is very willing to put herself at risk, and is less concerned with her own feelings/safety.
Now, I don't want to get too much into speculation, but I have to wonder if there was more going on in the Kaoru family than just the divorce and the too-high expectations for the "twin prodigies." Miki's uncharacteristic cynicism in saying "adults who tell you something is for your own good can never be trusted," as well as Kozue's total disregard for authority and her tendency to use her sexuality as a tool both concern me. Although Miki and Kozue's parents are not explicitly shown to be abusive, I do not think it is a stretch to say that there is a possibility that they were. It explains some of Kozue's behaviour in regards to Miki as well. It's not just posesiveness but protectiveness. She has needed to protect him before, and she feels she needs to protect him still (pushing the predatory teacher down the stairs, saving the birds she sees his innocence in.)
Interestingly enough, Anthy interacts with these chicks as well. She advices Miki on how to feed and take care of them. Utena even comments on how unusually straight forward she's being about the whole thing. This might just be another instance of characterizing Anthy as a person who is fond of animals, and that is certainly part of it, but i think there is more to it as well. If these baby birds are symbolic of (Miki and Kozue's, but also a general) feeling of abandonment by parents/adults, as well as their potential abuse, what does that mean for Anthy not only knowing how to take care of them, but being eager to talk about it? Could it perhaps be that she, like Kozue, sees herself in them? Like Kozue, Anthy herself is symbolically a bird, but a caged one in contrast to Kozue's claims of being a wild animal. Could it be that Anthy has had to become an expert in taking care of those (herself) that have been abandoned or failed or abused by the adults in their lives? Rememeber that this is the same episode where she says that Akio is more like a father to her than a brother. A parallel is indirectly being drawn between him and the Kaoru parents.
If Miki and Kozue's parents were abusive, this might be a rare moment of Anthy empathising with other victims, telling them through metaphor how to take care of themselves. Although, it doesn't keep her from continuing to manipulate them, as she goes on to say her line about returning the chicks to their mother, which is what sets Kozue off. Anthy also says that she's never actually raised chicks before. Maybe she's not very good at taking care of them (herself) after all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's also what looks like two caged parakeets in Miki's flashback of their childhood. I assume this has similar meaning to Anthy's birdcage, as a feeling of being trapped, in this case by their parents' expectations for them. Kozue used to be a caged bird, but now claims to be a wild one, despite still being inside the birdcage that is Ohtori.
Brood Parasitism: Nanami and Touga (and Utena)
Tumblr media
The Kaoru's are not the only sibling pair in Utena to be compared to birds. In Episode 31, Her Tragedy, a pretty unique shadow play is put on in the Chairman's Tower about a cuckoo leaving its egg in another bird's nest, a phenomenon known as brood parasitism. It also references the fairy tale The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen. Perhaps the most interesting part of this play is that it's done in the style of the ones in the black rose arc, with C-Ko playing all the roles, the return of the monkey-catching robot, and Utena's fourth-wall breaking commentary at the end. I won't get into what this means, as it doesn't have anything to do with the bird metaphor, but maybe in another post.
This shadow play is about how Nanami and Touga were adopted, and specifically about Nanami's feelings on the matter. Of course adopted children are not parasites, but it makes sense for Nanami to think along those lines, considering her fear of being compared to animals or aliens, and of being ostracized by the society she lives in. Nanami doesn't actually know that she is adopted, only that Touga is, which muddies that interpretation a little. Perhaps it is about Nanami blaming Touga's birth parents for "leaving him in another nest"? Something about her resentment of Touga at this point in time, thinking of him as a parasite in their family? Or simply her fear of what not being his blood-relative means.
I'm more confident about the Ugly Duckling reference, and it being symbolic of Nanami's worry of not fitting in among her peers. Nanami mainly copes with this by thinking that the reason she doesn't fit in, is because she is actually better than everybody else, because she's related to Touga (being a beautiful swan among the common ducks.) The play ends with the cuckoo insisting that it will become a swan one day, when really it can't. It will never be a duck that fits in, either. It will always just be what it is, a parasite (a space-alien. A girl who lays eggs.) This reflects Nanami's despair at the idea that she's "just another fly in the swarm" after her duel in the next episode.
And like all the shadow plays this one can be interpreted as being about Utena as well. She is an orphan who is now being raised in Akio and Anthy's "nest". Although she wasn't placed there by anyone but Akio himself, so it's more about her insecurities about feeling like an outsider in their family. And like the Ugly Duckling/cuckoo, she is also out of place among the rest of the students, and dreams of growing up to be something she can't actually become, in this case a prince. (credits to this analysis on the shadow plays for helping me piece together my thoughts on that. Always cite your sources!)
Cuckoos can also be symbolic of one-sided love, and is the origin of the word cuckoldry. Make of that what you will.
Tumblr media
I should mention that Nanami also lays an egg of her own a few episodes prior. ...Or does she?
Her nightmare sequences show her fears of being compared to a chicken, a turtle, a frog, and of course, a space alien, but it is quite obviously a bird egg. And since we are later shown that Anthy has a chicken named Nanami, much like the cow with the same name, it can be assumed that the egg comes from there, and that Anthy brought it to Nanami's bed, perhaps via Chu-Chu. Could this relate to the brood parasitism of the cuckoo in some way? Is this not one bird (Anthy) laying its egg in another bird's (Nanami's) nest (bed) and getting them to raise it? is this what Anthy means when she tells Miki she has never personally raised chicks? Are all of these metaphors connected??? There's also the fan-theory that Nanami's egg hatched a reincarnated Chu-Chu, and in that case would he be the baby cuckoo while Anthy is the mother and Nanami is the duck? I'll be honest I'm not really sure what to make of it at this point. Draw whatever conclusion you want!
Tumblr media
Last and probably least interesting is the third of Nanami associated bird imagery: the crow in episode 10. Crows can be symbolic of death, and it feels safe to say that this one is just here to set the mood of the scene, and as visual confirmation that the kitten did indeed die. Not too much to say there.
The Chicken and the Egg: The Student Council
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd be remiss if i didn't mention the student council's chicken and egg speech in this post as well, even if it has been analyzed to hell and back by hundreds of people before me. It is a reference to Hermann Hesse's book Demian. It is about breaking out of childhood and into adulthood. It is about escaping Ohtori, which is both the egg and the cage (and interestingly enough, during the speech birds can be seen flying by outside the cage of the elevator.) In Nanami's version of the egg speech she mentions "the cage of freedom" and how it cares for the chick. This something that ideally should be true for schools. A place that limits children, but in a way that prepares them for the adult world. Of course, Ohtori as a system has no interest in this, as it is a cage in its most literal sense: a place to keep people trapped. Trapped in their harmful behaviours, in their lack of growth, in their idealized memories of the past, and most of all, in childhood.
And with that, we have come full circle back to Anthy's birdcage as a symbol for all of Ohtori. Thanks for reading :)

I legally have to do this, but Sonia and Gundham for the duos? For obession's sake.
Tumblr media
AHHHHHHH I LOVE THIS SHIP.
Gundham, ostracized his whole life for being a nephilim, only finding compainionship with animals who doesn't judge by social status. Putting himself as the role of villian, he accepts a life of solitude and never being understood. BUT WHAT IF??!? This villian met a princess? Destined enemies at first glance but this princess has a kindred darkness in her? A darkness of loneliness, no one wanting to get to know them as a person, having your interests treated with reckless abandoned by others. Imagine Gundham giving his usual tirades but instead of being met with confused stares, he's greeted with enthusiasm! From a princess no less!
Sonia, studying her whole life to be a storybook princess for her people. Never getting to know anyone because her status scared everyone away. She wants to make a genuine true connections. And as soon as she leaves the comfort of her nation who only saw her as a delicate Faberge egg, she gets to live her life as a normal Japanese school student. Toast in mouth and all. She gets to meet all these amazing people that could possibly be friends? And she meets THE MOST AMAZING PERSON OF ALL. He's incredibly kind, as evident with how he treats animals. He shares her interest, something frowned upon in her castle. The way he talks is so fascinating. AND he treats her as an equal?
I don't make enough content with them. It's a bit hard for me to write for because Sonia is a bit boring to me (sorry Sonia fans). I get the appeal, don't get me wrong. But I don't relate with her personality or her experiences. And she gets shafted in the plot a lot. She was kinda reduced to a plot device to divulge information. And HOW - THE - FUCK did she not have a bigger role in chapter 4? I read something that Sonia was supposed to be a possible suspect in every chapter (Chapter 2 - she wore a wet suit to hide the blood | Chapter 3 - she was the one who last saw Hiyoko | Chapter 4 - She was acting the craziest from hunger | Chapter 5 - She was gone for most of it) so that's interesting.

Hey Fozz! I'd love to hear about your Chucky HCS!
///// TW FOR GROOMING AND MENTIONS OF CSA //////
(Note that this is for my own version of the Chucky TL despite it taking ideas from the series/TV show)
Tumblr media
You look like an angel (look like an angel) Walk like an angel (walk like an angel) Talk like an angel But I got wise
You're the devil in disguise Oh, yes, you are, devil in disguise
--------------------------------------------------------------
The true beginning of Chucky's descent into the career of a serial killer had happened in the office of child therapist and psychologist Amanda Mixter, someone who was bored with their profession due to it being fored upon her by her parents
Until she had laid her eyes and claws into the recently traumatized 7 year old Charles Lee Ray, seeing someone she could mold into her own personal social experiment and.... compainionship on the side since she found it "too hard and too time consuming" to find it in the appropriate dating fields with men her age
Having been gaslit by her to the point of convining the young boy into believing that he had killed his mother on his own volition with no help or coercion from the killer that broke in that night instead of the truth of him being threathen with both his and his mother's life if he did not do so, Chucky during this time until he stopped seeing her at the age of 15 thought that she was the closest thing to a mother and sister figure that he had at the time
-------------------------------------------------------------
It took years until Chucky had met up with Tiffany again in their adulthood did he truly realize what had happened to him since Tiffany's look back then looked a LOT how Mixter did when she was young and it would actually bother Chucky a lot and would sometimes even cause flashbacks to encounters he had with Mixter (but of course never told Tiffany about it and lashed out at her a lot, hence it being a big part of why The Sarah Thing happened)
It was only after hearing one of the songs that he and Mixter used to "dance" to come over the radio in Jesse and Jade's van during the events of Bride and having a panic attack hearing it in front of Tiffany did he finally decide to tell her what happened with him and Mixter all those years ago (and went into detail into how it was one of the mian catalyst to The Sarah Thing after they had Glen and Glenda)
To this day Chucky still has a hard time every time one of the songs from their sessions comes on and HATES being called Charlie even though his mother used to call him that before she died becuase Mixter called him that so much (and he hated it even back then, but never protested), and he has a high distrust of authority figures, especially around his children
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This is a extermely heavy duty headcanon so I totally understand if this is all a bit much for you and others, I just hope that you're able to find it interesting (is that even a good word for this??)!
Have a great day my friend!!

OKAY airy is a character who is interpreted depending on the bias someone already has abt the character based on their own personal experiences etc like this is true for every fictional character but its just the only way to view airy tbh like thats just him. airy is either a misunderstood person who died young and has no idea the damage he has caused bcuz of mental illness from decades of isolation and the trauma of dying or he is a sociopathic monster who is masterminding the entire thing and knows how horrible and evil he is. both narratives are valid although i would argue he canonically leans closer to the first interpretation due to his protrayal in episode 17 and 18 but whatever. like ppl do unironically think that airy is this supervillian and his whole weird autistic freak (affectionate) thing or whatever he has going on is just an act, partly due to their own experiences with people and other fictional characters. in my opinion airy is just someone who was a random guy and he found himself in a situation where he could become god and he did, and he uhh he is obviously not okay and he does not seem to understand morality or the harm he is causing other people AT ALL that doesnt make his actions okay but he might just actually be that stupid. like he does not seem to get it and he almost acts like that to a point where u have to wonder if thats on purpose?? if he's acting like this bcuz he doesnt want to face the consequences of his actions, which i would argue is also true. he is shown feeling guilt when talking abt the season one contestants he killed but outside of that he does not seem to care about any harm or destruction he's caused to these peoples lives, i would argue bcuz he is so disconnected that he physically can not empathize with them or understand what they are experiencing. he is for the most part only concerned with his own desires and wants, he wants to make his gameshow and that is what he's going to do regardless of who he hurts (aka literally everyone) he is disconnected from reality but he also obviously cares, he is not a violent person although he is strong and able to defend himself. he actually HATES hurting people and feels a lot of guilt relating to that and cares so much abt liam he wants him to be happy and feel better. but primarly he focuses on himslf bcuz he has to, he has been isolated for DECADES with his cassette player as his only compainionship and he puts that and his gameshow above everything else. he can obviously lie to get what he wants as shown in episode 17 (although not very well) anyway i would say that he knows he is hurting people and destroying lives deep down inside himself but he has to ignore that for his own sanity and the guilt is too much to bare. its also true that if these are all real actual people then that means that he did actually kidnap all the original contestants and then commit mass murder and they all had lives and families of their own, and that is literally not something he can cope with as seen in episode 17 in this way he almost parellels charlotte who also pushes her guilt deep down inside in order to get what she wants

the percys had been elinor's frequent companions during childhood, whether on her visits to alnwick, or after their arrivals at court. with no siblings of her own for compainionship, her mother had encouraged her towards her cousins, and from then on, she never went any significant amount of time without seeing them. at least until the matter with the seymours, that was.
it was an aggrevating thing, being an heiress without a father. if she were a man, she would have been free to control her own life long before her current twenty three years. if she had had a father, then her future would undoubtly feel more certain. and yet, she was and had neither, and instead was moved between households at the whims of others. at least when she was younger, she'd had her mother to fight for her.
nel had not seen alnwick, and had barely seen her percy cousins since her mother's death and her subsequent removal to the seymour household, and the longing that welled up within her found no outlet until she saw edmund across the gardens at hampton court. it was only her deeply engrained etiquette lessons that prevented her from sprinting across the grass to meet him.
"you look well cousin," she said upon reaching him, "it has been far too long since we last met."

You told me to tell you about Cowboys. This was your mistake. /lh
So long story short most cowboys weren't the white straight heretosexual icons that they're portrayed as in most modern-modernish media! Alot of them were poc, wanted criminals, and queer!
Also alot of them lived in small groups so both split costs and for compainionship as well as protection.
Alot of people confuse ranchers with cowboys, but the main difference is that the cowboys would be working for the ranchers herding their lifestock. Alot of them didn't even own the horses they were riding, which is sad but also really interesting considering the steriotypes of cowboys and their horses.
But yeah alot of cowboys were queer. They didn't nessicarily fit into what we'd traditionally consider gay or trans nowadays, but male partnerships were common although spoken about in hushed tones. Alot of them also weren't very gender conforming either, although I know less about that admittedly, but I'm planning on doing a big research project on this stuff later for school because we were given free range on topics and I want to write about cowboys <3
staring at you with my autistic eyes and taking notes!! actually i do know one thing about cowboys! friend anon used to tell me this abt them all the time way back when actually, but i think its something like the original ‘cowboys’ were latino herders called vaqueros? i forgot exactly what friend anon said fhfjfbfjf im silly but i think theyre similar to what you described as early cowboys :3

The Voyages Of Ker'Tak and Skye Episode 2: Departure
Now, Ker'Tak and Skye had gotten along for quite awhile. Not six months ago had Ker'Tak's ship arrived on Earth, and not six months ago had the Human Skye befriended Ker'Tak in a rather peculiar way.
On instinct, they got along. In logic, that wasn't always the case.
"Ker'Tak, I honestly don't get it! Why can't they talk to one another and get it over with?" Human Skye asked during her training with her new phaser.
"Stay focused!" Ker'Tak called, "If you do not pass this exam, they will not allow you on the Starship."
"I am focused!" Skye called back as she shot down the rest of the targets. Her accuracy was lethal, "I just want to understand what makes this conflict tick."
"Very good," Ker'Tak complimented Skye, who was more impatient than ever, "This conflict is especially important because of the prey-predator relationship between the two species. One greatly fears the other, while the other wishes strict dominance and is bargaining for a one-sided agreement."
"So prey can't stand up to predator, predator wants to take advantage of that fear?" Skye asked as she holstered her phaser.
"Precisely," Ker'Tak nodded as she approached them.
"Ah, you see that makes more sense," Skye nodded as she registered her weapon and her personelle code into the computer.
Ker'Tak nodded as they made their way to the medbay, where each Skye was being taught medicine under Ker'Tak.
They had watched her take to the practice quiet easily, memorizing and practicing diagnoses, learning symptoms, performing low-risk surgeries, learning anatomy and biological factors.
Ker'Tak was rather proud of bringing this youngling into the feild of medical sciences.
Skye was quietly taking on one of the greatest mysterious illnesses of the Universe, one that plagued the Si'Nain's.
"Ker'Tak," A week seemed to fly by, "Ker'Tak come look at this," Skye was inviting them over to look into a petri dish she had grown for the week.
"Is this what you've been working on?" Ker'Tak peered over their student's shoulder.
"Yep, it looks more like a bacterial infection rather than a virus as you suspected. The rate of reproduction and the number of colonies suggests it's airborne. It's possible to take care of it with a few antibiotics, but which kind would be most effective?" Skye started theorizing.
"Erm, Human Skye?" Ker'Tak got her attention just as she got up to pace, "If we've been treating this as a viral infection, it's possible humans may be at risk to catch this. We've been administering a vaccine for it."
Skye looked over and shrugged.
"Actually, I had the shot, turns out that it's one of our kinds stomach flora, very rarely can it hurt us, so we'll feel little affect, and as soon as I can draw up an antibacterial that won't hurt Si'Nains, I daresay it'll hardly be a problem anymore," Skye chuckled as she continued to pace, "In fact, with your antivirals, and our antibacterials, we may have found the solution to 85% of illnesses within the Universe, at least for the time being."
Ker'Tak nodded, "You never seem to focus on the details, everything is in a bigger picture. You humans perplex me.."
Skye looked up.
"Well, yea. If I were constantly focused on the details, I might miss what the bigger picture might have to show me, or what I could learn from other peices of the picture," Skye explained, "It's better to have a balance. To see the bigger picture and to focus on the details, but never selecting one in complete priority over the other."
Ker'Tak nodded, understandably a bit baffled by Skye's untimely wisdom. After all, she was 17 Earth years. Yet still oddly wise for her age, even in comparison to Ker'Tak. Although approximately 457 Earth Years old, Ker'Tak was the equivalent of a teenager in Si'Nain society.
The two left the lab, talking rather excitedly too, about possible cures, human medicine, Si'Nain cures, life cycles, wise "crack" wisdom.
They passed by other human volunteers, and in an instant Skye would say Hello, then return to her present conversation with Ker'Tak.
Ker'Tak happily listened to her ramble about the endless possibilities of the medical feild, now armed with knowledge that was far beyond her species' own.
"I mean, we could cure cancer! Stop HIV, end most chronic illnesses! Cure allergies!" Skye laughed heartily, "It's an open ocean of possibility Ker'Tak!"
Skye's laughter pinged in Ker'Tak's mind as a happy thing, loud and full.
"So, Human Skye, we disembark from Earth in approximately two Earth days, have you packed all your things?" Ker'Tak changed topics as this moving away from home was weighing on Skye's mind.
"Yep! Everything's already in my new quarters! The Captain said it was surprising how fast I was ready to move out. Honestly I need a change in scenery anyways!" Skye chirped rather cheerful.
Ker'Tak nodded mindfully waiting as Skye jumped ahead. A unique trait in humans was the oddly boundless impatience. Ker'Tak would have to add that to the manual.
She was relentlessly helpful, and open with the crew. Some found her honesty quite alarming, but Skye's endless innocent gaze got them to follow suit.
The departure from Earth was bittersweet for Skye.
"This opens up a new chapter in my life, Ker'Tak. Ooooh! I can't wait to see the stars up close!" Skye's excitement reflected in her squeal-speak.
Ker'Tak chuckled at the enthusiasm. Skye had spirit they had never seen before, they could admit that.
It took 3 months to sort 95% of human issues in space out, and outside of the rough introduction to life star-side, Skye was getting the hang of things.
She soon surpassed Ker'Tak in knowledge and ability, but refused a rank higher than theirs at every offer.
"I may be smart, but I still have plenty to learn from Ker'Tak! Plus, they're a great teacher, and much wiser than I am!" Skye would use the same excuses, even if most of them were no longer true.
So why does she stay? Ker'Tak found themselves pondering, She can't be that naive, can she? I told her everything about the High Council, and she's in her prime to rise to the top of the Council.
"Ker'Tak?" Skye's voice came over the comm. She sounded scared, almost in some kind of pain, "Could you come to my quarters please?"
"On my way," Ker'Tak responded strictly, walking down the halls of the ship post-haste.
They arrived to an open door, and a pained groaning coming from within. The lights above flickered, and torn fabric was strewn about.
"Human Skye?" Ker'Tak called upon entry into the dark room.
"Ker'Tak?" Skye's voice weakly drifted from her bed chamber, "Help.."
Ker'Tak hurried into the room, seeing Skye holding her arm, and tears running down her cheeks as another man stood in front of her.
Ker'Tak called for security.
"YOU BITCH! YOU SAID HE WOULDN'T CALL!" The man hit Skye with a blade, angry and hateful thoughts filled his mind.
This wild rage towards the wounded Skye insulted Ker'Tak. They watched as the man knocked Skye out, and as this stranger turned towards Ker'Tak.
"YOU BASTARD!" The man was clearly drunken, but Ker'Tak paid no mind to this fact. In fact, they felt an inexplicable need to protect young Skye. Ker'Tak felt...Close to her, in some way, as a friend. They had felt this pack bond to her grow stronger over the past nine months, as they had to come to know her on a personal level one would save for family, lovers, even, in Si'Nain society.
Skye was like Ker'Tak's little sister at this point.
Ker'Tak drew up his personal defensive weapon (PDW), and readied themselves for the man's attack.
The man swung low, striking Ker'Tak along his abdomen with the blade. Ker'Tak opened fire and stunned the man.
The thud of the man's body called attention to the room.
Ker'Tak carefully took up the unconscious Skye in their arms, muttering to themselves on how naive Skye had been to trust an inebriated man like that.
She shuddered in their arms as security came and took the man to a holding cell for the evening.
"Skye, you've got to stop being so-" Ker'Tak stopped talking. Something heavy was on Skye's mind, they could feel it in their sudden change in pitch.
"Please, just..Take me to the medbay," She whimpered. Ker'Tak felt their face go hot, enraged now.
The human concept of revenge is far from what Ker'Tak would call their next set of actions.
The Captain stared down the Doctor.
"You could have slaughtered that man," The Captian started harshly, "Doctor Ker'Tak, tell me what provoked such violent transgression against Human Gabriel."
Ker'Tak stood at attention. They weren't sure how to word this. So they reported the incident before the further harm of Gabriel.
The Captain perked up in interest upon learning of Gabriel's transgressions against Skye and Ker'Tak. The Captain sighed and nodded.
"I understand. Ker'Tak, you cannot take justice like that into your own hands. You are a Doctor, and although you have every right to defend yourself and your student, next time leave the reprimands and punishments of such crimes to me. Revenge is reckless," The Captain let Ker'Tak off with a warning, "This will not be going on your record, but please, refrain from such actions in the future."
Ker'Tak nodded, and thanked the Captain before being dismissed from the room.
Ker'Tak returned to the Medbay, the dull throbbing in their abdomen warning them that they would need another regenerate soon.
They pushed it out of their mind as they saw a frazzled human Skye trying to keep up with everything headed her way.
Ker'Tak took her by the shoulders and carefully leaned down. She froze, suddenly terrified.
"It's just me, Human Skye," Ker'Tak noticed her breathing get noticeably easier.
"Ah, thank god. Another regenerate right?" Skye asked them.
"Yes," Ker'Tak nodded and Skye handed them the injector.
She walked away, trying to keep herself busy. Being hurt the way she had just been wasn't something so easily brushed aside.
"Skye, take your break," Ker'Tak offered. She shook her head.
"No, I have to do better. I need to keep it together and to keep going. This is just a bad day. I can get over it," Skye sounded like she was lying to herself.
Ker'Tak shook their head, looking down at the bandages wrapped around her arms, and the bruises showing up on her face.
Ker'Tak walked over, picked Skye up from where she was standing, laid her down on a cot, and sat beside her.
"Rest. You're badly hurt. And dehydrated from all the crying," Ker'Tak scolded Skye half heartedly.
Skye sat there a moment, then reluctantly rolled onto her side. Quickly, she found herself dozing into a restless sleep, terrified and on edge..
Until the warmth of a friendly hug from behind calmed her down.
The first true lesson Ker'Tak kept in mind from that evening?
Not even humans can always trust those of their own kind, and all will resort to violence to either protect themselves or get what they want. Si'Nians were lucky they found a teenager to make first contact with.
Fear, hatred and ignorance are the enemy.

But then I saw the fear in your eyes, so, suddenly I was in love. You were just as scared. If only they could see mine.

Since we're having a lil revival of 2012 with the longest of Bury your Gays trope I have ever heard about finally coming to completion, can we all agree that Sherlock was ableist af?
They able-washed John in the most disrespectful way possible.
Do you know how many times "It's all in your head" has been used to discredit disabled people's conditions and pain?
Do you know how many times cane using disabled people get screams of "You're clearly faking!" when they take a couple steps without their canes?
Do you know how many times disabled people get told "well maybe if you tried harder you wouldn't be disabled"?
Sherlock had the fucking audacity to write a disabled character who's disability was cannonically all in his head?!?!
And Sherlock Holmes... Holy fucking shit Sherlock Holmes.
Sherlock Holmes as a character is so clearly coded as neutrodivergent, and all the writing around him boils down to "Isn't it so haaaaaaard dealing with a neutrodivergent person" or "Let's point at the austitc kid and laugh"
I would give specific examples but it's almost the entire fucking show!
And nearly every time, if its not a gay joke or jab, John is talking to someone they make a comment which basically boils down to "How do you deal with such a hard thing as a nuerodivergent person?" or "Let's causally mock and joke about a nuerodivergent person's nuerodivergent traits"
Do you know how often nuerodivergent people will suppress their nuerodivergent traits to just get acceptance? To hopefully make connections with people?
Do you know the fear that you are a burden to the ones you love solely because of your nuerodivergent? That you'll never find compainionship because of you're nuerodivergent.
Do you you know how fucking horrible it is to realise that people will just deem you a freak for stimming?
Do you know how heartbreaking it is when you start info dumping about your favourite thing because you find it fascinating and want to share it with people because it makes you happy and you want them to be happy too, only to have them shut you down and tell you you're being annoying?
Do you have any idea the deep fucking sadness when you suddenly realise that all the "new friends" you made that day and all the "nice things" they were telling you were sarcastic and they only were being friendly with you to mock you to your face and you didn't realise and they probably all laughed their fucking heads off because of it?
And Sherlock, Sherlock took nuerodivergent ableism and turn it into lil jokes that everyone can laugh at.
BBC Sherlock could have been a wonderful representation and a great chance to show that solderaity between those who face nuerodivergent based ableism and physical disability based ableism is not only important but also highly beneficial to both.
But they didn't do that.
BBC Sherlock able-washed one of the most famous disabled characters in literature and made its main character a punching bag for nuerotypicals to laugh at.
And for that I will never forgive them.
Signed, an austitc cane using disabled woman.

Alright I’ll elaborate. While any form of sex can of course lead to disease, as far as I know having sex with multiple partners and certain., types of genital acts.. are more likely to spread disease than others. One partner for life (as opposed to casual sex with multiple people you don’t know) and avoiding certain types of act (ok I’ll just say it: avoiding anal, even CDC warns against it) are well known medically verified ways to lessen spread of STDs (open to correction if I’m wrong).
i mean yeah sounds pretty reasonable. i doubt that's like, THE reason (i think human pscyhology is naturally predisposed to monogamy and life time compainionship) but im sure its a contributing benefit.

❝ you’re important. ❞ // For Ghost!
@oflockhearted
“I... I...”
Her voice trailed off. There was this odd look in her mismatched eyes, one which was difficult to describe: a faraway look, as if Tifa’s words had triggered... something.
She knew they weren’t real. She knew they were just... figments of her mind, made so much worse by the experiments that she’d endured. Every day, she could hear them, whisperings of her worthlessness tickling her ear as she tried to sleep, or hushed statements of her weakness and failure following her as she walked through the slums. Orion helped a lot, but sometimes... they were too strong. They’d start screaming at her, drowning everything out as cries of agony and yells of hatred overwhelmed her very existence. She’d see the fire, her fellow robed people, Jonathan, mom, dad, Athena, V̷̮͋̌o̷̻̐͐ͅï̵̫̮͊d̸̻́͑ and...
. . .
Him.
Above the screams. The begs for mercy... there was something else. Something... terrifying. Even worse than the masked one.
And he . . .
No. She couldn’t think about that now. She couldn’t let them know. If they ever found out of her hallucinations, of how twisted and warped her mind truly was... how would they react? Would they even want to be near her? Or... would they abandon her. Leave her to be alone again, just her and Orion, cast aside to wander the world in isolation.
No, she’d tell them later. When she knew they wouldn’t leave her behind. This couldn’t be kept a secret forever; sooner or later, they would know...
With trembling arms, and crystal beads in her eyes, Ghost reached out and wrapped her limbs around Tifa, quivering.
“Th-thank you, Tifa,” she murmured softly, pushing her forehead into the other’s shoulder. “I... haven’t heard anyone s-say that to m-me in a long t-time...”
She sniffed; the pangs in her chest just weren’t going away; and that was all right. To have such wonderful friends beside her brought nothing but joy to soul, for so long she’d ached for some kind of positive compainionship with fellow members of her own species: and she’d never realised how much she’d been craving it until she heard it, saw it, felt it... and how it warmed her delicate heart. The last person to have spoken with such kindness and care to her... by Gaia, did she miss him...
It had been Jonathan.

aaaa i thought i could do it without being pressured but oh well🥲 at least i am only one fic away from considering it all done☺️☺️ anyway i do love the fact that my mom found a new hobby hahah. before she doesn’t like plants because she said it’ll bring insects or what but then i’m glad quarantine did something to change her mind hehehe at least there’s fresh air here now🥰
i believe in you rozé!! you can do it!! ngl the genya fic had me in shambles bc that boy is the loml, izuku aside 🤧
and honestly i didn't expect to get into plants either!! quarantine made houseplants trendy (since the feeling of compainionship + relatively low effort compared to a pet or kid + plants make people feel happier) so there's that, but also: they're pretty!! the bugs do make me want to curl up in a ball and wither away though :')
