I have a friend who, like me, does not have “heart feels” when cooking. We need measurements. We need exact replicable steps. Cooking should be more like baking where if I follow instructions precisely I’ll have the same meal each time.
So when he asked his mom for her recipes he was vexed to find that she’d say one thing but use a lot more or less than the spice she’d said. Her approximated recipes were much less vibrant that the real food she made.
His solution: he weighed her spices before and after the meal while noting all the steps she took. Finally. A recipe that was true.

Discover the World of Spices | Spice Varieties, Cooking Tips, and Recipes
Spices have long been the soul of culinary artistry, turning simple ingredients into vibrant, aromatic feasts. These aromatic treasures not only define the essence of countless global cuisines but also provide a myriad of health benefits and historical significance. In this blog post, we'll embark on a flavorful journey through the enchanting world of spices.
A Spice Odyssey: A Brief History
The story of spices is a tale of adventure, trade, and discovery. For centuries, these precious commodities were traded along the famed Silk Road and Spice Route, connecting East and West. The quest for exotic spices fueled explorations, led to culinary innovations, and even changed the course of history. Spices were so valuable that they were considered currency and were at the heart of global trade.
The Spice Spectrum: A World of Variety
Spices come in a remarkable array of flavors, each unique in its own way. Here are a few spice essentials:
Cinnamon: This sweet, warm spice is extracted from the bark of the cinnamon tree. It's used in both sweet and savory dishes, adding a delightful depth of flavor.
Turmeric: Known for its vibrant yellow hue, turmeric is a staple in many Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines. It offers an earthy, slightly bitter flavor and is cherished for its potential health benefits.
Cumin: Cumin seeds have a nutty, warm flavor and are often used in Indian, Mexican, and Middle Eastern dishes. They add a rich depth to curries and rice.
Chili Peppers: From mild to scorching hot, chili peppers add heat and excitement to a variety of dishes. They are used worldwide and can be enjoyed in various forms, including powdered or dried.
Coriander: Both the seeds and ground form of coriander offer a citrusy, slightly nutty flavor. It's a key ingredient in many spice blends.
The Spice Rack: A World of Culinary Inspiration
Spices are the artistic palette of chefs worldwide, elevating everyday ingredients into gourmet experiences. They not only provide flavor but also offer numerous health benefits:
Anti-Inflammatory: Spices like turmeric and ginger are known for their anti-inflammatory properties.
Antioxidant-Rich: Many spices, such as cinnamon and oregano, are packed with antioxidants that may protect against free radicals.
Digestive Aid: Spices like ginger and peppermint can help alleviate digestive discomfort.
Metabolic Boosters: Some spices, including cayenne pepper, are believed to boost metabolism.
Cooking with Spices: The Magic Ingredient.
Using spices effectively in your cooking can transform your meals. Here are a few tips:
Balancing Act: Balance spices carefully, ensuring that one doesn't overpower the others.
Toast the Spices: Dry toasting spices before grinding them can release their essential oils and deepen their flavors.
Freshness Matters: Use whole spices when possible and grind them as needed for the freshest flavor.
Experiment: Don't be afraid to experiment with spice blends and international cuisines. It's all part of the culinary adventure.

thinking about jamil who's trying to impress you with his cooking, trying all sorts of dishes, different spices, different ingredients, spending hours cooking in the kitchen just to try and coincidentally tell you he's accidentally made too much food again, and it'd help so much if you could take it off his hands
you always do, smiling gratefully and accepting the food with both hands, your words of gratitude spilling freely from your mouth and it'd make him so happy-
but he's never seen you eat the food.
he's a bit confused, he's heard you mention to others that you don't get a lot to eat from the headmaster, and he's always seen you readily eat food others give you, the tarts you get from trey, the apples epel gifts you, even the dubious mushroom dishes jade offers... (no he wasn't keeping count!)
so he gets the courage to ask you one time, making it seem like it was another coincidence when he finds you at the library, making casual conversation before asking you what you thought of his food
"oh! i think it was delicious! grim seemed to really enjoy it!"
you... think?
he asks if you'd had any of the food, and you avert your eyes, seemingly hesitant
"ahh.. i haven't... i have awful spice tolerance you see..."
oh.
oh.
the next time he gives you "leftovers", he makes sure to tell you he made a non-spicy variant of curry, so you should be able to enjoy it
what you don't know is that he spent a few nights trying to perfect a non-spicy dish, researching different cusines and ingredients before finally setting on an eastern variant of curry that seemed to suit your tastes
but it's all worth it, the way you stared at him in awe, maybe realising this wasn't a leftover at all, and the way your eyes sparkled as you excitedly asked-
"oh!! do you mind if i try it now?"

Cal Kestis headcanon: because of his years of unsupervised living on Bracca, he has horrible eating and sleeping habits. He'll be up at 2 am chugging caf for no reason and thinking ration bars count as a meal. Greez is having an aneurysm. Cere is horrified. Merrin sees nothing wrong with this.

My friends of Dungeon Meshi
I have a gift for you and it is IRL Laios and Senshi
Someone gave this lovely Korean couple a supermarket that will sell them American cheese 100 slices at a time and I just… yeah it’s them
They have also acquired ostrich eggs and on the one hand they are the perfect people to have them and I’m delighted they did but on the other hand it does feel like someone should be trying to stop them
Not succeeding. Just… trying
I now feel a very visceral understanding for Marcille and Chilchuck’s experience because I am watching in mild horror but I would also have no choice but to try it given the chance
Note: if you’re gonna be a chickenshit about unusual ingredients you haven’t eaten before your Laios or Senshi fan card will immediately be revoked I do make the rules
There’s a bunch of fascinating things they’re doing with tripe and organs and things I’ve never eaten and absolutely none of it gives me the visceral urge to run of boiling noodles in American cheese
Also their mayo is in The World’s Worst Squeeze Bottle it looks like tentacles and it gives me inverse ASMR so watch with caution for shit to get weird but none of you are gonna embarrass this fandom by saying something like “oh gross guts”
The channel is called Try To Eat and I’m not gonna lie I have complete faith in their abilities to eat absolutely anything they want to

okay i've got to get this off my chest because i feel like i'm going insane
a herb is a plant with leaves that are used to flavour and/or add aroma to food, either as ingredient or garnish.
a spice is a plant substance such as a seed, bark, root or fruit that is usually dried and used to flavour and/or add aroma to food. spices are not herbs.
an aromatic is a vegetable that is used at the flavour base of a dish, also adding aroma. aromatics are not the focus of the dish, and are added to give background depth. aromatics include onions, garlic (and other alliums), carrots, celery, ginger, turmeric root, and chillies (i.e. peppers). aromatics are not herbs, and neither are they spices.
and while we're here, seasoning by definition refers to adding herbs, spices, salts, sugars, or acids to enhance the flavour of the food, not to add new flavours. good seasoning will merely amplify or bring out what is already there.
i know they're largely insignificant, pedantic distinctions but it's something that really gets my goat lol alright thanks for coming to my ted talk
