thinking about how i found someone a couple weeks ago who'd copied my entire personal website exactly for their own website (right down to the images, what each different page looked like, and the hobbies on the 'about me' page), and had it linked on their linkedin account where they claimed to be a software developer as their own work. and i emailed them asking them to take it down, obviously, because what the fuck, right? and i quoted a bit, in my email, from their linkedin post about their (plagiarized) site where they went on about how making "their own" site was an opportunity to let their own gaudy tastes fly free or some shit.

and they replied "lol so embarrassing I had chatgpt write that… ;_;"

followed by three paragraphs of an apology that was obviously, blatantly, also written by chatgpt.

they did take down the website, but like. i'm still astounded by the total lack of regard for other people & the blatant unapologetic plagiarism being used to try to get jobs. also like, the sheer lack of curiosity that goes into doing that — don't you want the satisfaction of making something that's actually yours? don't you want to mess around with things until you figure out something that works?

anyways i think about this every time i see posts defending using chatgpt to write essays or ai art or whatever. this is how you get people who don't care at all about boundaries, who never have to actually develop the emotional depth to articulate an apology themselves, and who never have to respond to the consequences for their actions because hey, they can just make a robot deal with it instead and shield themselves from any guilt, right? you never have to care about what other people are feeling if you can pass all your excuses off to a computer.

hi. so im trying to help make this website more accessible, by trying to add a screen reader, a dark/light mode toggle, and a font size changer. why i, a person with no computer background or interest is doing this, is a question i have asked myself and have no answer to, but i would prefer that this were done. could someone please guide me in this?

Espa worldbuilding wise i mean. i was supposed to be working on it but I wanted to do a quick recap :)

(No i barely have anything noteworthy yet. Don't matter!) (Forget what I said I got quite the ramble)

The state - The state the story takes place in is a fictional brazilian state located in the Northeast, awkwardly placed between the states of Bahia, Sergipe and Alagoas. No it does not make sense. Proceeding: The name of the state is Ipabara, and its capital is the city of Anaconda. Ipabara's current governor is a guy whose name I think could be really funny if I put a little bit more of thought into, so I'm not gonna say yet, and Anaconda's mayor is Enísio Souza de Góes.

Ciça's town - Ciça, from the start of the story, lives in a small town about an hour (by car) from Anaconda, not exactly in the seaside so there ain't any beaches there. The town's name is Sebastião da Graça and its mayor is [insert obsenely long name here]. Ciça's house number is the 11 btw. The place Ann and Espa, for their mission, are settled on is 129B, a few streets away.

The corp - IT DOESN'T HAVE A NAME YET. But it will. What I know is that it's also known as "the Dove". When influent people say "a little birdie told me [important and redacted piece of information]", the 'little birdie' is 100% the Dove.

Their hierarchy is divided in five positions: The leader, their council, the management, the field staff and the servants. The field staff is divided between handlers and weapons, although I should probably give them a better name. The weapons are the child soldiers and the handlers are the ones they answer to. The servants are also victims of human trafficking who are forced into domestic slavery for the higher members of the Dove. They have the least autonomy, but their immediate "superiors", the weapons, don't have it much better either. The weapons don't have authority to order the servants around. Just the handlers and higher ups can.

The weapons have an internal ranking that divides them into "Canaries" (top soldiers), "Vultures" (the hella good), and "Cranes" (average Dove child soldier). It doesn't grant them any privileges or authority to be of a high tier though. That is just a classification of their overall usefulness and value (which, inside the Dove, is very much defined by their usefulness) so management knows which missions to assign them or if they are worth the trouble saving if they get badly injured. Treats and privileges are granted arbitrarily by handlers and the most respected (the closest thing to authority a weapon is granted) weapons are the senior ones who've been there for the longest.

The servants are also the ones responsible for patching the weapons (and handlers) up after missions and cooking their food. Handlers get full meals three to four times a day, every day, but the weapons get a weird gross soup (their 'rations') with the suplements and nutrients they need, with an actual meal being only during breakfast when they eat the same as the handlers. The weapons can't cook for themselves. They don't know how. The higher ups like to keep it that way.

Regarding punishment for the weapons, everything is pretty loose, but there are a few guidelines in place. Every misbehavior on the part of a weapon is classified into four categories: Minor, mild, major, and capital. Severity of punishments is applied accordingly (although the handlers can sort of do whatever they want), with capital punishments being things like 'permanent damage' or injuries that take very long to heal from (which normally even a major rule-breaking wouldn't earn! because the Dove wants them in working conditions most of the time after all!), death, or refurbishment.

Refurbishment is a whole topic on itself, because it's something the weapons are taught to fear and do anything to avoid, a fate they should not get close to no matter what. Its threat keeps them in line. Now, what is it?

Selling them!

The Dove has many partners, including some illegal/unethical brothels and other trafficking ring businesses. When a weapon commits something that is so hedioundous that the Dove will not keep them anymore (like a big rebellion which could be repeated in the future if they don't get rid of them), they throw the problem away to one of them. The weapons aren't 100% sure of what would happen to them if they were refurbished, but they have enough of an idea to know to fear it. Sometimes, if they are just too badly hurt, but not to death, they are sold out too.

Every weapon has a brand as well, somewhere in their body, in the shape of a dove. To signal property. They are branded as soon as aquired and their initial training is over. The handlers also have tattoos (although they are just. consensual of course) in a slightly different shape, to signal they belong with their fellow Doves. I'm not sure what is the brand's design but I'm not in a rush to define it.

The weapons also have three training sections a day (unless their current mission interfers with that) and have a strict sleeping schedule to be maintained in their best form.

The weapons are often referred to, in a more 'veiled' or secretive context, as "company assets".

They also have sort of an uniform that is not very strict, but is all black. Nobody minds it if they customize it. Hence why Espa can wear that bright yellow cape over hers. There is alsoa variation of it that is their "stealth uniform" for when they need to be more subtle, but I haven't gotten around to design it yet. Overall, clothing is not very rigid, and in many occasions they need to be dressed casually to blend in anyways so it's not like the higher ups care.

The weapons are also trained to be able to sleep anywhere.

The Shelfes - The Shelfe family is a powerful one from Anaconda, and their riches come all the way back from when slavery was still legalized. The couple made their money exploiting enslaved Afro-descendants and passed their resources to their oldest son, who started his very own lawyer firm. After merging it with plenty others, it became one of the most powerful of the Northeast and he settled himself as one of the wealthiest people in the state. He married to a Proper, Beautifull woman, and together they had three children. The oldest of them followed his father's footstepts and started his own business (with lots of help), a large cosmetics company; the middle one took over her father's firm and is its new CEO (can you tell I don't know how lawyer firms work. I will search it up later); and the youngest started working as a high executive of a chocolate company and rose up its ranks with his family's influence to become the co-CEO.

Seth Shelfe is the oldest "son" (they are not a boy at all. Not like their mom cares.) of the middle daughter, the lawyer, and has five cousins on their mom's side and a younger sister.

The Shelfes don't like the Dove very much. In fact the main conflict going on is of the family going against the corp. They have ties with the government and it is on their best interest to destroy the Dove. The Dove, of course, crafts a plan to anihilate them first, and that's where Ann and Espa come in. They are the most recent couple of weapon and handler sent in to nearest town (Sebastião da Graça) to subtly meddle with some warehouses the Shelfes own and get into their bank account to steal some good money.

Or that's what they are supposed to do, anyway.

All this to say. I'm working on it. Praying hands emoji. I'm not leaving it like the others, I'm working on it! And we are getting close the writing stage! Just a few more things on the corp (like its goddamn name. im accepting suggestions if you want to give any) and the shelfes, and we'll be ready to go. I also already have an outline of most of the story but can't share it because spoilers. That's it!

For the record, the stories are super fascinating! They lend a lot more dimensionality to the Pokemon universe, exactly along the lines as some of the more disturbing official descriptions of Pokemon. They are par for the course, though certainly fleshed out to some extent via short story format instead of a 1-liner.

Also, before anyone goes clutching their little pearls about this because it's Pokemon or because "Pokemon is meant for kids":

It's fine. It would be cool and fine if the stories were published and canon and if a Typhlosion was actually the husband of a human and they had a kid together. The stories are super neat! They're myths! And they would be super neat even if they were real historical events in the Pokemon universe! Your "god" of humans is a Pokemon. What exactly do you think that means for humans in that world? Lol!

Nothing about this is gross or weird, at least not in the cancel culture way so many people are ranting about.

Nothing about this deserves anyone "defending" Typhlosion. Typhlosion hasn't done anything that requires defending. Child-brain outlook. Embrace the myths.

I found a post where some lady was crying the Nile over the very idea that writers had spent their time writing this instead of writing PG stuff, because she couldn't fathom that anyone would spend time on anything that wasn't identically required as the end product ... and because these myths aren't PG, that made it an especial crime.

Tell me you don't have a creative bone in your body without telling me you don't have a creative bone in your body.

It's Time To Investigate SevenArt.ai

sevenart.ai is a website that uses ai to generate images.

Except, that's not all it can do.

It can also overlay ai filters onto images to create the illusion that the algorithm created these images.

And its primary image source is Tumblr.

It scrapes through the site for recent images that are at least 10 days old and has some notes attached to it, as well as copying the tags to make the unsuspecting user think that the post was from a genuine user.

No image is safe. Art, photography, screenshots, you name it.

Initially I thought that these are bots that just repost images from their site as well as bastardizations of pictures across tumblr, until a user by the name of @nataliedecorsair discovered that these "bots" can also block users and restrict replies.

Not only that, but these bots do not procreate and multiply like most bots do. Or at least, they have.

The oldest ones have been created in March, started scraping in June/July, and later additions to the family have been created in July.

So, I have come to the conclusion that these accounts might be run by a combination of bot and human. Cyborg, if you will.

But it still doesn't answer my main question:

Who is running the whole operation?

The site itself gave us zero answers to work with.

No copyright, no link to the engine where the site is being used on, except for the sign in thingy (which I did.)

I gave the site a fake email and a shitty password.

Turns out it doesn't function like most sites that ask for an email and password.

Didn't check the burner email, the password isn't fully dotted and available for the whole world to see, and, and this is the important thing...

My browser didn't detect that this was an email and password thingy.

And there was no log off feature.

This could mean two things.

Either we have a site that doesn't have a functioning email and password database, or that we have a bunch of gullible people throwing their email and password in for people to potentially steal.

I can't confirm or deny these facts, because, again, the site has little to work with.

The code? Generic as all hell.

Tried searching for more information about this site, like the server it's on, or who owned the site, or something. ANYTHING.

Multiple sites pulled me in different directions. One site said it originates in Iceland. Others say its in California or Canada.

Luckily, the server it used was the same. Its powered by Cloudflare.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what to do with any of this information.

If you have any further information about this site, let me know.

Until there is a clear answer, we need to keep doing what we are doing.

Spread the word and report about these cretins.

If they want attention, then they are gonna get the worst attention.

Discoveries my nerd friends have found out about the DEI reporting site is that you need a valid zip code but everything else can be nonsense, including just copy pasting “who was phone” style internet memes - and more importantly, that the coding on the site is SO bad that you can easily use Inspect Element to change both the character limit and file upload size limit to your heart’s content. So it is very possible for someone to upload something that is like 75 TB and brick their whole database.

Thank you for your service, friends. The scariest woman I know, who also holds my job in her hand, was talking about that website with genuine fear this morning because she had just hosted a DEI focused speaker at our conference and I thought to myself, “tumblr can take care of this,” which is rarely true, but these are unprecedented times.

I've received quite a few requests in the past asking how I made 14DWY, what resources I used, how I organised my lore, etc. — so I figured I'd make one big post and share it with everyone else as well! It features a buuunch of helpful stuff I wish I'd known when I first made 14DWY, so hopefully this will help others too!

What engine do I use?

14DWY uses the Ren'Py engine!

There are two preinstalled games (called "Tutorial" and "The Question") that give you a basic rundown on how to use the program!!

Zeil Learning's video called "Ren'py Tutorial For Beginners" is also a good place to start for those who have no idea where to begin with Ren'Py!

General tips to keep in mind:

Make games for fun, not for fame. Too often, I see new developers create VNs with "trending tropes" because they see how successful it is and want the same level of popularity. As harsh as it sounds, this only makes your game feel hollow and superficial, and players will notice.

When using Ren'Py, it's better to have multiple .rpy files rather than putting everything into one large file!! It makes organising and finding things easier, and if something gets corrupted... at least you won't lose everything!

Plan everything beforehand, but give yourself room to expand and implement new ideas.

Start small and slowly expand over time. Don't start off with an overly ambitious project, as it can be disheartening when you put all this effort into something just for it not to gain any traction. Also, be grateful for your earliest supporters, as they're the ones who will lift your project off the ground!!

This is a personal preference, but I recommend starting off with itch.io as your main distribution platform. Most storefronts take a cut from your donations and revenue, and sites like Steam require a $100 fee just to publish your game on their platform. Itch is free, and you can even toggle off revenue sharing in your profile settings! (I like to keep it at 10% though, because I'm grateful for everything the site provides ♡)
