2019.01.12
These days, I’ve been studying a bit of physics in preparation for starting my physio course in uni soon and I do this for about 1.5-2hrs every morning.
Right now I am using the Cornell method of notetaking to see if it is the right system for me to use during uni lectures in the future. I initially had a section at the bottom of the page for summaries but personally, this isn’t something I would normally use, so I modified the format to just have the page split in two columns. In the left column, I write down the syallbus dotpoint I’m studying, as well as extra notes and tips that help with my understanding. The right hand column is just to do notes as usual wih whatever format you tend to use. I am using the outline method right now, which is pretty standard.
Also, is it just me or is it easier to get work done in the mornings cause after I have lunch, I fall into a sort of slump and end up spending 4hrs on Youtube until it’s time to start preparing for dinner.

How to take Notes in Class
My first quarter of my senior year has recently just come to an end and I wanted to show how I take notes in class, if I have to because usually I get notes like in BC or I pre-write them at home like in AP Stats. So in the one class where I have to write my own notes, this is how I do.
I usually stick to an outlining method, however, I have tried the Cornell method of note-taking, mind maps, using charts, and even just writing down each and every word that my professor or teacher has said.
I will write any important things that my teacher has said, usually in a blue pen just because I heard once that blue sticks better in your mind and to be honest I still have no idea to this day whether that is true or not. Usually we'll start with a main topic, and I'll write down everything that I found necessary and I'll try and sum it up in my own words right the teacher is speaking usually off a powerpoint.
I'll make somethings shorthand and then took clear, concise, organized, and structured notes. You will see charts, images, or even emoticons when I am taking notes because these are easier visual images to learn and memories. If you teacher gives you a powerpoint beforehand, you can download them and write notes on the side or if you really want to waste paper, you can print them one-sided and just write on the back of it.
Use these questions to find out if you should jot down what your professor is teaching:
-Introductory remarks often include summaries of overviews of main points.
-Listen for signal words/phrases main reasons/overviews
-Repeated words or concepts are often important.
-Non-verbal cues like pointing, gestures, or a vocal emphasis on certain words, etc. can indicate important points.
-Summaries of the topic is important too
I hope this was helpful to everyone who is looking to solidify or improve parts of their note-taking method, while this form may not work for each class and depends on everyone as well I would recommend this for history, chemistry, biology, psychology, etc type of classes where it's more background learning. Then applying it in the classroom environment. I will post how I take notes for Calculus and Statistics and how I make my review sheets.

Can the Cornell Method be Reinforced with Technology?
Several years ago I started promoting the use of the Cornell Method to students as well as professionals because of its many redeeming qualities. It looks simple, and yet it brings lateral thinking, visual, and kinesthetic factors into the process. If you are not familiar go to this link: Cornell Method but simply put: Take notes, write keywords and questions on the left, come back to the page at another time and summarize.
Recently, I’ve realized that in some cases you may want to section folders in a note-taking application such as Evernote or Onenote to do much the same thing. Simpler, depending on your study or research habits. Just remember, thinking about what is worth writing down in part of the process and copy/pasting or typing is not the same by a long shot.
Find the way that works best for you. My suggestion is to use a handwriting app on your device of choice. There are a lot out there. My personal favorite is Fiinote, note everything or Fiiwrite as they allow you to write over the entire screen like a Neanderthal and place the words for you. The notes created can be uploaded and sorted in your favorite note management application. You can even take it a step further with apps like Index cards.
I’m very interested to hear what people think of this idea.

Why Learn Biology?
Tumblr media
There are many other fields which are very interesting in biology. They are neurology, embryology, Bio-lab technician, life scientist, clinical biologist, etc. It’s just that one has to make an effort to see and then knowledge makes itself perceivable to the perceiver!
Biology is one of the most flourishing disciplines today. When students graduate from high school, they are often confused about their careers. Most Indian students — pushed towards either engineering, medicine, and management by their parents — are unaware of all the various opportunities out there.
Unfortunately, due to a lack of awareness, students miss out on the diverse opportunities a field like Biology offers. And these go beyond medicine. Here are six possible career paths for students interested in Biology. It doesn’t cost a lot to study them, and you will be able to find a job that pays well.
1. Biotechnology
Tumblr media

You need creativity to study Biotechnology. After all, you’re creating a better world with an amazing combination of Biology and technology. A biotechnologist often works with genetics and living organisms to design vaccines, formulate medicines, find solutions to food productivity…the list is endless. To become a biotechnologist, opt for a BSc degree with a specialization in Biotechnology after 12th grade.
2. Microbiology
Tumblr media

Another creative field you can study is Microbiology. As the name suggests, it studies micro-organisms — organisms that are invisible to the naked eye. It focuses on the relationship between microorganisms and their various environments. If this appeals to you, pursue a BSc degree in Microbiology. You also have the option to specialize with an MSc degree.
3. Biochemistry
Tumblr media

Biochemistry is another unique field of biology. This field views living organisms in terms of their chemical composition. You will study and research the life-processes of living organisms. The work sphere of a biochemist is often shared with a microbiologist and a biotechnologist, with different approaches. A BSc and an MSc in Biochemistry will set you up for success in this field.
4. Botany
Tumblr media

Botany is useful and fun! This branch of science deals specifically with plants and herbs. It’s all about different species of plants and their internal structures. From the kind of stem a plant has to the kinds of flowers it buds, you’ll study it all. Another application is making use of the medicinal properties.
5. Ayurveda Science
Tumblr media

With its origins in India, Ayurveda studies medicinal plants with healing properties. Although it relies on ancient wisdom, it’s a burgeoning field with a lot of scope for practitioners and researchers.
6. Zoology
Tumblr media

Zoology is an interesting, inclusive field that studies animals and how they interact with their ecosystem. It draws upon ideas and methods from microbiology, biochemistry, and biotechnology. You will study the physical characteristics, their diets, and how interaction with humans impacts them.
And that’s not all. An interest in biology opens the doors to several other interesting options — neurology, embryology, life sciences, clinical biology, and more. Learning biology can be fun and fruitful.

All the best to you!
