Jacob was your brother’s best friend, they met in elementary school and have been friends since. He lives across the street with his dogs that always went everywhere with him, well minus school of course. You knew him well, you knew he liked dogs, that he was really good at basketball and volleyball and that he had the voice of an angel, but the thing is nobody knew, not even your brother knew.
So, how did you find out? It was one very early morning on your annual family trip with his family where you woke up to find the nearest bathroom. On the way you walked by one of the large hallways in the cabin and found Jacob singing. You were in awe goosebumps formed because of how soft his voice sounded. Luckily for you, he didn’t know anyone had found him, so he just brushed it off.
That’s besides the point, Jacob was always kind to others, greeting people whenever he had the chance. He was known to everyone as an angel, reliable, kind and patient. However, to you, he was rude, entitled and impatient. You never understood how everyone spoke so highly of him, from his smile to his laugh. He suddenly started treating you poorly, purposefully ignoring you, not allowing you to join him on certain activities.
“Can you be nice to me for once?” You questioned Jacob who was sitting on his phone, not letting you walk past him.
“No”
“Dude, just move! I have shit to do”
This was what it was like for you being around Jacob, he was annoying only to you. When someone walked into the room, he switched to being sweet and patient, but once people left he was the complete opposite. Everyone saw your subtle change of character around him, you became almost withdrawn – Like your mind was preoccupied as you sat around Jacob. Nobody wanted to address the elephant in the room as to not cause an argument, but it got to the point where your brother decided to take matters into his own hands and confront his best friend.
One day when you were out with friends, he decided to call over Jacob to hangout. After hours of gaming and snacking later, you became the topic of conversation. The way Jacob spoke about you enraged him.
“Dude! Can you not treat my sibling like shit? It’s like they don’t even exist when you’re around them”
“What do you mean?” Jacob feigned innocence when he was far from innocent.
“You’ve got to be shit– You need to get your shit together! What’s your deal with them anyways? You were cordial and then all of a sudden it’s like a switch flipped and you completely changed”
Jacob sat back down on the couch in the living room, he grew quiet thinking about how his behavior affected your brother. He knew this act of speaking poorly of you couldn’t go on for any longer and it really shouldn’t. However, he didn’t want to drop the bomb on the real reason why he started acting up.
“You’ve been sitting there long enough, spit it out or you can’t be here anymore. I don’t want you around my sibling if you can’t treat them nicely”
“Fine” Jacob sighed, he scooted over offering him the other side of the couch.
“Please don’t be angry, okay?”
“I’m not going to wait on you forever dude”
“The only reason I started acting differently around them is because I realized I developed feelings. Not just a simple crush, but I feel like there’s something deeper and I don’t know what to you. You’re my best friend and they’re your sibling, I don’t want things between us to change. Please don’t tell them, okay? They can’t know”
“You what? What do you mean I can’t tell them?”
“Look, just hear me out okay?”
“Hear you out? No! You know what, get out of my house! You can’t just expect me to forgive you when you’ve been disrespecting them like that in front of my face! I won’t tell them, but sort yourself out or I will tell” He pulled Jacob up and dragged him to pack his belongings before shoving him out the door shouting more profanities at his direction.
The following week, you ran into Jacob at the park on your way home. He didn’t seem to notice you, so you quickly zigzagged through the crowd in an attempt to blend in. However your attempt seemed futile as he suddenly shouted your name.
“Hey, I was hoping to run into you!”
“Well I definitely wasn’t”
You turned your back to Jacob, pulling out your earphones to drown out his voice and continued your walk home with Jacob quietly trailing behind. You could sense his presence behind you, but decided to pay no attention.
“You can’t ignore me forever you know” He began to poke at your back, trying to get your attention.
“Come on, talk to me, please”
You stopped in your tracks causing him to bump into you, knocking the both of you to the ground.
“Jacob! What the fuck are you doing?”
He was on top of you, his soft warm eyes staring at yours. Normally, you would have pushed him off you, but this time something felt different. There was a certain warmth in your chest, a warmth that you haven’t felt before.
“You have really nice eyes”
“Thanks idiot, you’ve been staring at them for the past 5 minutes. Now get off of me before I scream”
“Fine, fine” Jacob slowly got up and straightened out his clothes before offering you his hand. You hesitantly grabbed his hand, allowing him to pull you up. However, he didn’t let go of your hand and instead interlaced his fingers with yours.
“Jacob, let go, please”
“No”
“Why?”
Jacob let your hand go, motioning you to join him on the bench by the lake. You joined him on the other side of the bench. You sensed his uneasiness, noticing the shake in his leg and his twiddling fingers.
“Jacob, what’s wrong? Why are you acting so weird?”
“I think I realized something that scares me. Please don’t say anything, okay? If you interrupt me, I’ll be too scared and not tell you how I feel. My mind has been going wild, like rogue waves crashing into rocks”
Your eyes met, he looked as if he were about to cry due to how glossy his eyes appeared. You scooted closer to him which usually never happened, but your concern grew.
“Your brother really got it out of me and I thank him everyday for this. Without him, I don’t think I would have realized my feelings for you… I didn’t realize I was being mean to you because I actually–”
Jacob paused and sighed, he slowly reached out for your hand and gently wrapped his hand around yours.
“I really like you and it took your brother kicking me out of your house for me to realize how much of an idiot I’ve been. I’ve known your brother for years, but he never let me talk to you until you got more comfortable around me and I completely understand since... You know, we weren’t really friends. Anyways, that’s besides the point”
“Jacob” You called out, he started to get side tracked and you were growing impatient.
“Right, sorry– I realized that I really like you. I know I’m just your brother’s best friend, but I really like you. I’m really sorry for treating you like shit and saying all those things about you. I don’t mean any of those things, I just. I did that to distract myself of my feelings and in turn, I pushed you further away”
“Wait, you actually like me?”
“Yeah, didn’t I just say that?”
You scoot closer to him, taking his hand in yours and resting your head on his shoulder. Jacob felt his heart rate rise, the sweat slowly building as you continued to lean on him. There was a comfortable lull between the two of you.
“You’re not going to say anything? I literally just poured my heart out to you” Jacob laughed, tightening his hold on your hand.
“Well, now that the waves have settled in your mind, my heart is yours… I guess, right, Jacob?”
“Right. Now I just need to go thank your brother because without him I never would have met you”
