Arcane Daemon AU

Character: Silco Dæmon's name: Sintilla Dæmon's form : Black-necked spitting cobra (Naja nigricollis)

‘Sintilla’ comes from the Latin word ‘scintilla’, meaning ‘spark’. It’s the root of ‘scintillate’, meaning ‘to sparkle, gleam, or shimmer’.

Black-necked cobras can get up to 7 feet in length, but like her human Sin's a little on the small side, about 3.5 feet long.

Ever since she settled, Sintilla (or 'Sin') has preferred to ride on Silco's shoulder or wrapped around his arm. Crawling on the ground is just so undignified, and it's easy to get underfoot in Zaun. Plus the extra height gives her greater range if she needs to spit her venom. (She doesn't like to do this but we all have to do things we don't like to sometimes. And her aim is impeccable.)

Just about the only time she would leave Silco's side would be when he was with Vander; then she would coil around the neck of Vander's wolf-dog dæmon, nestled nice and snug in Skaha's soft, thick fur.

Sin's hood has been mangled since that night in the river, when Skaha gripped her in her jaws while Vander held Silco underwater. She fought like hell, though, and Skaha wound up permanently blind in one eye thanks to the venom Sin spat in her face.

Since then, Sin has been even more reluctant to part from Silco, often preferring to hide inside his clothes when he goes out in public. Her tendency to remain hidden this way has led to some disturbing rumors that the Eye of Zaun has no dæmon at all; rumors Silco may himself be encouraging.

People who make "dæmon AUs" and then just stick dæmons into the world of the story they're crossing over with are cowards. Sure, occasionally they include other things from the His Dark Materials series, such as witches and armored bears, but if you want to do something, go all the way.

Let's do more Dæmon AU bc I can never have enough Dæmon AU.

Dick's dæmon is a female Gyrfalcon named Anahida. She's very reticent. It comes across as majestic and very self-possessed, and in some ways that is true. But she's also reticent because that's just how they were raised. I imagine it's a religious sensibility thing for them that sorta bled into societal norm. It's just polite to not acknowledge a person's dæmon. After all, a dæmon is a person's soul made physical, and talking to them, I imagine, is like barging your way into someone's physical space. It'd just be more respectful if you kept interactions between humans and humans only. Human-dæmon and dæmon-dæmon interaction is reserved strictly for family.

I imagine it might be like this in most parts of mid-century America, too.

So imagine Dick and Anahida's surprise, when not only does Lew's chameleon dæmon, Amalthea, address Anahida directly and without qualm, but Lew does, too.

It's Weird. But what's equally weird, however, is how much Anahida and Dick like it. Especially Anahida. She's been going about so unseen for so long... it's nice. To be able to talk to someone outside of just Dick.

Carmen Sandiego Dæmon AU???

(For those unfamiliar: dæmons are creatures created by Phillip Pullman, the TL;DR is they are a part of a persons soul and they manifest as an animal that fits that person 👍, dæmons can touch each other just fine but another person touching your dæmon is taboo 😳)

(I have ideas for most of the other characters and hopefully I will be able to show these ideas, but for now this is all I’ve got 💪)

Not me thinking about a His Dark Materials au where Pete's dæmon Altia settles as a peregrine falcon while he's on his own as a kid, because the last foster home was terrible in all new ways. Not me thinking about how he's both elated and devastated, because his soul is the fastest bird of prey in the sky, proof that he's made to be a pilot, but she's trapped so close to the ground because of their bond.

Not me thinking about him seeking out a witch's clan and begging them to help, to free her from his tether.

Not me thinking about the matron ready to turn him away, stopping for a moment to ask him why. Doesn't he know he'll be missing such a huge piece of himself?

No, he says, she's me and I'm her and we'll never be separate, but she needs to fly, because I need to fly, but it's going to be too long before I can join her.

Not me thinking about the matron teaching him that secret, the secret of far-flying wings, because he understands dæmons the way witches understand dæmons, and his soul will never be happy on the ground.

Not me thinking about everyone who meets him after unnerved by his obvious lack of dæmon, the whispers that follow him everywhere, from university to flight school to the Enterprise to Top Gun, because his soul is free to fly as high as her heart desires, and he can always feel her right in the core of him.

(Not me thinking about years later, when the matron watches a boy grown to a man bring another to her clan, one who was as trapped as he once was, a falcon with clipped wings who only wanted to fly, ice blue eyes wary as he introduces Lapsae with soft voice, and no little bit of hope.)

dæmon au where after returning from hell, dean's dæmon comes back Unsettled. at first it's kinda fun; they Settled pretty early, so being able to change forms again is bizarre and novel. they have a great time teasing sam and his dæmon via matching forms and one-upmanship, and kids they interview on the job think it's so cool that the scary fbi guy in the suit's dæmon can run through shifts and change forms back and forth with their dæmons. (adults are pretty freaked by it, though. like here's a guy pushing 30 and he's still Unsettled? something's wrong here, capital-w Wrong.)

I have several ideas for different fics about soul mates. But one of them is about Daimoniums.

To be more specific, this will be a different universe with the premise of the His Dark Materials series of books and series, which is:

- Daimoniums are animal-shaped manifestations of their human’s inner persona

- children’s daimoniums don’t have a fixed form, they can shape-shift at will

- “settling” happens when your daimonium takes their final form during your teenagehood

- touching another person’s daimonium is usually a no go if you’re not lovers

- interactions between daimonium and a human that isn’t “their own” are rare

- interactions between daimonium are usual

- daimoniums are usually of the opposite sex to their humans

- daimoniums can only stay a few meters away from their humans. The pulling is painful and can lead to death

- daimoniums have their own heartbeats and fade into nothingness when they die

- if your dæmon dies, you die, the same if it is the other way around

- your parents’ daimoniums usually name your own daimonium

Although for this fic a slight change will be made which will be this:

- your daimonium is the manifestation of the inner self of your soul mate

As the bond of a human and their Daimonium is special, when they meet their other half it is something that both feel instantly.

So, with this premise I would like to know your opinions about the Daimoniums that will represent our protagonists.

In itself, the main couple will be Bowuigi but there will also be some other interaction from Peachrio.

Peach.

Dingo.

As I mentioned, this would be the representation of Mario's inner self.

I chose a dingo to represent Mario because Dingo, regardless of whether they are dogs or wolves (there are still scientific doubts about that), are very fast and agile, and just like a canine, they watch over the safety of their pack. Just like Mario protecting his loved ones, and goes so far as to try everything to make sure of that.

So in this case and following the premise of the film, Peach would arrive at the mushroom kingdom just as they showed us, but with the difference that this time she would be accompanied. At first it would be difficult for the Toads to get close to Peach because the little Dingo would make them recoil every time they try to touch her.

Coming a bit to the events of the movie, I plan on showing a bit about the Toads' interactions with the Dingo.

That if, as Peach came into this world very young, both she and her Daimonium do not know why they have that connection but they do know that it is something special.

Mario.

Swan.

I think a Swan is a good representation for Peach for two reasons.

The first more than anything is because swans are almost everywhere synonymous with beauty, elegance, love and fidelity. Second is because the swans defend their young and nests with everything, in this case as Peach takes care of her kingdom and her people.

Just as Mario has seen to Luigi's well-being since they were children, so would his Daimonium. Just like when Mario feels down because of family pressure about employment, his daemon would be there to cheer him up.

With his first encounter with the princess, I imagine that like Peach, her Dingo would act defensively because he would believe that they are in danger, only for after having left them lying on the ground, they both notice a slight change in the environment, something much warmer.

Mario and his Daimonium would feel the same way but unlike Peach and the Dingo, they would know what it means.

Luigi

With this one I certainly had difficulties:

Ocelot.

I know Bowser is a reptile, but I like the idea that his inner self is more like a cat. The Ocelot is a territorial animal and they tend to make ambushes. I have also seen many fanarts and read many fics that make Bowser purr and have some feline aptitudes, and the truth is that I love his cat version of Super Mario 3D World. So I imagine that Luigi's Daimonium would always be defending him, having a more extroverted attitude compared to Luigi, which would also cause him problems because we know that there is never a lack of mockery.

His first meeting with Bowser would be somewhat awkward and somewhat terrifying on the part of Luigi.

Well, now I'm going to explain a little what I want to do with Luigi and Bowser. So watch out for a few spoilers for the books and the His Dark Materials series.

Knowing that the human world and the world where Bowser and Peach live are not the same, I am going to take it as what are different dimensions

That is why neither the Toads nor Peach knew why she and the Dingo had that bond, because in this dimension there are no Daimoniums. So Bowser doesn't have one.

In their first meeting, Luigi's Daimonium tries to stay with him all the time as comfort and to protect him, at some point Bowser would order his subjects to separate them but both would desperately ask that they not do so because that would imply that strangers would touch Luigi's Daimonium and that being separated, they would have difficulties because a human cannot be at a certain distance from their Daimonium. Bowser wouldn't understand why they would both make such a fuss about it, so he does it himself and this is where the bond happens. Bowser may not have Daimonium but he is somehow connected to Luigi, when he took the Daimonium he felt a light current of electricity through his body, something he had only heard happen in tales and legends.

And that is where I will count because the rest I will write for the complete fic.

By the way, in all this I never addressed the Daimoniums by their names because the truth is that I don't have them yet but I would love for you to help me choose their names. You could comment on it or put it in your tags.

It must be remembered that Peach came to the mushroom kingdom very young, so it must have been the Toads, in this case Toadstool who named her Daimonium. While in the case of Luigui and Mario, it was the Daimoniums of their parents who named theirs. And the Daimoniums are the opposite sex of their humans.

As a bonus and also goes hand in hand with Spoilers, when an individual who does not possess Daimonium crosses into a dimension where they do exist, that individual will go through a somewhat painful process where their Daimonium will take form outside of their body. So yes, there is still a chance that Bowser will get one but time will tell because I already have the perfect animal to represent Luigi.

I was craving a dæmon sort of au so here, have some stinky little characters I just made for funsies. Ryuuji, who has a snow leopard dæmon named Freja and Kai, who has a fox dæmon named Taiyan!!

Ryuuji is a renowned demon hunter and Kai is the demon prince 🥴 I wonder what will happen

So I thought what if I tried assigning dæmons to some Wednesday characters

(Dæmons are from His Dark Materials and are basically manifestations of a person's soul in animal form that are basically lifelong companions. They're usually the opposite gender of their humans (idk why but same sex dæmon/human pairs do exist, they're just rare), and you can't go too far from them (unless you're a witch) without either dying or severing from your dæmon (this CAN happen under very specific circumstances, like with the right technology for example), but it's DEFINITELY TRAUMATIC. And I need to highlight that THAT IT IS NOT OKAY TO TOUCH ANOTHER PERSON'S DÆMON WITHOUT CONSENT. Touching another person's dæmon is literally taboo. It's revolting, evil, and it's assault of the highest degree basically. The most common times this happens is during moments of heightened emotions, either in like battle, or behind bedroom doors (like the exception to this rule is between you and your lover. THAT'S beautiful, cause that's like, the deepest intimacy you could ever achieve, touching your lover's SOUL)

The bond between you and your dæmon is absolutely sacred, and you can talk with them, they support you and guide you how they can, you keep each other company, you grow together, and as a child you play together too.

And as a kid, until a certain age (it's different for everyone but it's typically between 10 to 18, but much more common in between that), your dæmon can change animals (symbolism of how your personality is still developing and stuff from what I understand), and when you reach a certain age and "officially grow up", in a sense, your dæmon settles into one animal forever (that is, yes, a reflection of who you are))

This is gonna be fun :DDD

Wednesday's dæmon is a magpie, named Alistair

I can easily imagine that Alistair would be the only one who can actually reason with her LOL

Also I'm imagining this really tense scene where Tyler and Alistair are staring at each other, and Alistair steps closer to his hand that's resting on the table, as if he's trying to touch him, and Wednesday notices, freaks out, and immediately scolds him about it. Like this moment would practically prove to him that Wednesday has feelings for him..!!!!

She also probably settled pretty early, like, at ten years old. Idk it makes sense to me that she'd already know who she is and settle earlier than most kids.

Tyler's dæmon is a golden retriever named Nyla

I know I'm a horrible person for this but if they had dæmons, Laurel Gates would almost for sure touch his... like, maybe especially when he's shackled in the cave, where he can't reach them. I'm revolted thinking about it...

Oh my gosh what if that's how Gates unlocks him? By touching Nyla... and THEN pulling them apart while he's shackled? Because Hydes can be unlocked through traumatic events, right? OH MY GOSHJWJDJWJDHWD. Like, maybe the Hyde still isn't coming out, so Gates, in a moment of madness and frustration, starts dragging Nyla away from him, and he's literally screaming from the sheer pain of it, pulling against the shackles to try to get to her, then he FINALLY transforms into the Hyde, saving both their lives but also severing them. Which would mean they can separate now, but at WHAT COST?

But this would explain why Wednesday wouldn't be able to identify he's the monster, because if there was a golden retriever running alongside the Hyde, Wednesday would've easily been able to identify that the Hyde was Tyler LOL. Maybe that's how it'd work in this universe generally tho, Hydes' dæmons get severed from them the moment the Hyde is unlocked.

But imagine Tyler and Nyla having to pretend nothing's wrong and taking extra care neither of them stray too far from each other, or else someone might suspect something. AAAAAAAA-

But uh other than that depressing stuff, I think Tyler and Nyla would find a lot of comfort and solace in each other. Like, they're literally all they have. Like, nights just cuddling with each other for comfort. Even when they're trapped in the cave and Laurel leaves them there, Nyla breaks out of the cage Laurel put her in and goes up to Tyler to try to give him some warmth.

Yes don't worry, even when you're severed, if you survive, you still have a connection with your dæmon, it's just never the same.

Enid's dæmon is an Arctic Hare named Amiel

I'm thinking since Enid wolfed out late, Amiel settled late, too. Maybe werewolves only settle when they wolf out 🤔 and maybe their dæmons merge with them when they wolf out, just because I think it'd be wildly inconvenient to have ur dæmons running after you in werewolf form LOL

AWWW I can imagine that, after wolfing out, Amiel immediately runs to her and presses his forehead against hers. And when Enid and Amiel are going back to the school, she's like, carrying him. And when Ajax runs to her and comforts her, he leaps from her arms and towards HIS dæmon and presses THEIR foreheads together AWWWW WHRUWHHRE

Ajax's dæmon is a curly tailed lizard named Ariadne

I just feel like they'd both be very chill LOL. I can imagine her chilling on Ajax's head while waiting for him to de-stone.

Also imagine Ariadne and Amiel cuddling when Ajax and Enid are having a moment together. Like THAT'S CUTE. Imagine... imagine... them being alone together in Enid's and Wednesday's room and them touching each others' dæmons for the first time aaaa wjdjwjdjje

Bianca's dæmon is a capuchin monkey named Aimone

They look like they're judging someone very intensely LMAOO

Idk I feel like Aimone will be this cool, intimidating dæmon sitting on Bianca's shoulder and looking down on everyone else.

And last but not least, Xavier's dæmon is a cobra, named Ophelia

In the description I found of cobra dæmons, the description that stood out to me the most was "just a touch dramatic", which Xavier definitely is HAHAHAHA. But I love the image of Ophelia chilling in his sleeve, watching him draw.

Also Xavier's parents' dæmons would totally name his dæmon after Ophelia Hall LOL

Final thoughts

Idk if Enid would be the only one out of the six of them that hadn't settled yet, but I honestly don't know who wouldn't be, cause they all seem to already have a decent idea of who they are. I'd assume Eugene isn't settled yet either, tho, and maybe not Pugsley yet either.

Dæmons also constantly mirror what their humans are doing and reveals more about the interaction of the humans. Like, if there are people having a romantic interaction, the dæmons might start nuzzling each other. If they're arguing, the dæmons might be growling or cawing or hissing and just getting angry at each other. Like, that scene where Lucas, Carter and Jonah harass Wednesday. All their dæmons would be staring each other DOWN. And when Wednesday and Tyler first kiss, their dæmons were probably gently going to each other and started nuzzling each other lovingly. AAAAAAUGHHH

Also Laurel Gates would definitely be the kind of person to make her dæmon attack other people's dæmons (this usually causes pain to the dæmon's human, but not the same as if she actually hurt Nyla herself). Like she probably did that to Tyler when she was first dragging him to that cave to unlock him. She probably also punishes him by hurting Nyla (or... NO, making Tyler hurt her... NOOOO). She probably also does this to Wednesday in Crackstone's crypt or something. But Wednesday would definitely do this back to her (and maybe to other people too?? Like, people who mess with the people she cares about?? idk tho)

(what if... and I'm completely making this up now this is NOT canon to the dæmon lore of his dark materials AT ALL... but what if just before Tyler is severed from Nyla, because of the Hyde changing his personality, he unsettles?? Or does the Hyde have his own dæmon that makes Nyla shift into its own animal when he takes over in Tyler's body??? idk I'm just rambling at this point I don't even know what I'm saying)

Should I... should I write a fanfic of this universe. I actually might. The potential this has!!!

Restricted touches

“Elain, you are about to pass out from exhaustion,” Anwar spoke from the perch Elain usually had around the kitchen for him. “Just take a break.”

“I can’t,” was her only answer as she continued to mix the batter of the new recipe she had come up with. 

“You can't take a break or pass out?” Arwan rebutted, exasperated. “Because you can definitely pass out, I can feel how tired you are, you know.” 

As the months passed and the day of Nesta’s and Cassian’s mating ceremony approached, Elain felt more stressed. She loved how much trust her sister had in her, to believe that Elain could be in charge of the decorations like the ballroom, the flower arrangements, the table’s center, and the cake. However, she should have known it would be too much work for one person.

So that led them to today. Elain had started baking 5 different types of cake since before the sun had gone up, Cassian and Nesta were coming during dinner for cake testing. The thing about Elain that Anwar disliked was how much pressure she would put on her shoulders and how she thought she deserved no help.

“I’m only going to tell you that if you pass out and Feyre finds you on her floor, I will tell her everything,” Anwar said angrily.

“And what exactly is everything,” She asked, rolling her eyes at how dramatic her dæmon could be while serving the batter in a tray to put in the oven.

“That you aren’t sleeping because you dread seeing the shadow singer the next day and how you are going to bed incredibly late to not have to think about it and how you are basically slowly killing yourself” Anwar answered exasperatedly, flapping his wings.

“Anwar!” Elain exclaimed, offended, turning to look at him after putting the cake in the oven. 

“You can’t even tell me it’s not true!” he rebutted glaring at her.

Elain sighed and dropped herself on a chair. 

Anwar expecting a comeback waited on his perch but when Elain rested her head on the chair and hid her face with her hands staying quiet, he was at her side in an instant, he landed on her shoulder and started rubbing his head against the side of hers trying to console her and give her some comfort. 

“I’m sorry Elain,” he murmured in her ear, “I’m just worried about you.”

Elain let a small sob get out and Anwar could feel the tears running down her face and had returned to trying to comfort her, neither aware that someone was watching. 

Azriel stayed behind the wall, his shadows going everywhere and not knowing what to do to console Elain besides repeating over and over to Azriel how heartbroken she was, and why.

She was in the same or worse scenario as Azriel, neither being able to sleep nor being able to stop thinking about the other. Azriel had started to not get more than a couple of hours of sleep, it was starting to affect his senses and making him sloppier when on missions. They were both slowly wasting away since that night. 

“ Oh poor Petal,” murmured Senka from his shoulder as she tried to catch a peak of Elain. “ you need to go in there and console her!” She exclaimed, flapping her wings and taking off from his shoulder. “ That's how we will make it right!”

Azriel caught her before she could make a line for the kitchen, “ no.” He said firmly with his most intimidating voice.

Senka rolled her eyes and swat at him with her wing. “ do not use that voice with me.” She warned and wiggled herself out of his grasp. “ You are both clearly miserable, why not go and fix things?”

Azriel sighed and ran his hand through his hair, “ Rhysand” He answered with an obvious tone. 

“ well fuck Rhys!” She exalted loudly. 

“ Senka!” Azriel reprimanded her. 

“It’s not fair that he gets to be with Feyre no matter what and suddenly you don’t get to have a choice about your own relationship!” Senka exclaimed, annoyed. “ if Aster knew about this, he himself would be kicking Rhysand for this” 

Azriel’s shadow hand informed him that Elain had begun standing up but was looking pale not being able to stand properly. He and Senka had moved to the edge of the wall to peek at the door and when Azriel saw Elain go down, he lunged himself catching her. 

He landed on the floor back first with her on top of him. He had a good grip of her and held onto her neck.

“Elain!” Anwar screamed, flapping above them anxious and worried. “ Elain, Are you okay?”

“ I’m fine,” she mumbled tiredly.

“What happened?” Azriel asked as he re-adjusted Elain closer to his chest and reached a sitting position with her on his lap. 

Anwar looked both ways before getting closer to him making sure not to touch him. “ She-,” he started not sounding sure if to confide in him.

While Elain and Azriel had always had a gentle and blossoming friendship, Anwar was unsure what to make of the shadowsinger. His first days in the world were foggy and confusing but he could remember bits and pieces, most of his clear memories involved the shadowsinger. 

“ Please Anwar” Azriel pleaded as he hold the owls gaze, “ I need to know if we need to get Magda” 

Anwar shook his head, “ she hasn’t slept well in days.” Was the only thing he said before landing on Elain’s lap and curling against her. “ not since the solstice incident.” 

“Oh, poor girl.” Senka lamented landing on Azriel’s shoulder

“I’m fine,” Elain murmured with her eyes closed, and snuggling closer to Azriel, she put her arms around Azriel’s neck.

Azriel’s cheeks turned red and neither Anwar nor Senka could hide her laughter.

Elain for the first time since being washed out of the cauldron, felt safe. She opened her eyes and could see Azrael's siphon and his armor, she could feel something soft next to Azriel’s hair.

Senka. 

Elain gave the bat a small smile and reached for her. Anwar and Azriel stayed quiet as Elain reached for Senka, no one stopping her and when her fingers finally reached her, Azriel closed his eyes, enjoying the sensation and the love of that single touch.

Touching someone dæmons was forbidden in Pyrinthian. Your dæmon was an extension of your soul, touching someone's soul could feel like the worst violation ever, and even amongst mates it was frowned upon but having Elain reach out to his soul and touch it with such care and gentleness, reminded him why he loved her so much. 

Anwar had climbed on his other shoulder next to Elain’s head and had started rubbing his peak gently on his cheek.

Arcane Daemon AU:

Character: Jinx/Powder Dæmon’s name: Morrig / 'Rig' Dæmon’s form: Various (see below)

Though the daemons of children can change form at will, they eventually settle on a fixed form around the time the child reaches adolescence. At the time of Act 1, Rig hadn't settled yet, but the form he used the most often was that of a brush mouse (Peromyscus boylii)

Rig, however, did not settle, though after the explosion at the docks he never took the mouse form again. By the time of Act 2, he spends most of his time as either a large Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) or as a hooded crow (Corvus cornix). This is a reflection of many things: Jinx's mercurial nature, her arrested emotional development, and the conflicted nature of her identity.

In both of these forms he typically perches on Jinx's shoulders, which are pretty much constantly covered in little claw-scratches and talon-pricks as a result. She doesn't seem to mind.

At the end of Act 3, Rig finally settles on the crow form, as Jinx ceases to be in conflict over who she is.

I took the name Morrig from Morrigu, another name for the Morrigan. Neither Jinx nor Powder ever called him Morrig, though; he was always just Rig.

Rig's eyes have changed as Jinx's have: first to blue after the warehouse explosion, then pink after her 'resurrection' via Shimmer.
