"Tim Friede’s YouTube channel is home to a collection of videos depicting the Wisconsin-native truck mechanic subjecting himself to purposeful snake bites, blood slowly dripping down his arms.

For the past 20 years, Friede has been one of the most notorious “unconventional” medical researchers, undergoing over 200 bites from the world’s deadliest snakes — and more than four times as many — 850 — venomous injections. 

He did it all in the name of science.

According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 100,000 people are killed by snake bites each year, with countless more being disabled by the venom of the deadly reptiles. 

While life-saving anti-venom is available, very few countries actually have the capacity to produce it properly, given that most bites occur in remote and rural areas, and anti-venom requires arduous sourcing and accuracy. 

But Friede’s blood is now full of antibodies, following decades of strategic exposure to the neurotoxins of mambas, cobras, and other lethal slithering critters.

His blood is now the source material researchers are using to develop an anti-venom capable of neutralizing a broad spectrum of snake bites...

Friede started this hobby — which he is indeed adamant no one else tries at home — out of sheer curiosity in childhood. After playing with harmless garter snakes in his youth, he began keeping more dangerous species of snakes as pets. At one point, he had 60 of them in his home basement.

In 1999, he began extracting venom from his snakes, drying it, diluting it, and injecting himself with tiny doses — keeping meticulous records as he went.

He had one major hospitalization in 2001, when he was paralyzed and in a coma for four days. But instead of giving up, he doubled down. 

“In hindsight, I’m glad it happened,” Friede told The Times. “I never made another mistake.”

Jacob Glanville, an immunologist and founder of biotech company Centivax, stumbled on Friede’s videos.

Now, Friede is the director of herpetology at Centivax and serves as something of a “human lab” to Glanville.

“For a period of nearly 18 years, [Tim] had undertaken hundreds of bites and self-immunizations with escalating doses from 16 species of very lethal snakes that would normally a kill a horse,” Glanville told The Guardian.

“It blew my mind. I contacted him because I thought if anyone in the world has these properly neutralizing antibodies, it’s him.”

To develop the new anti-venom, Glanville and his fellow researchers identified 19 of the world’s deadliest snakes — in the elapid family — which kill their prey by injecting neurotoxins into their bloodstream, paralyzing muscles (including the big, important ones, like the heart and lungs).

The trouble is, each species in the elapid family has a slightly different toxin, meaning they would each require their own anti-venom.

But Friede’s blood contains certain fragments of each of these toxins; protein molecules seen across the various species. Because of his decades of service to science, his blood also contains the antibodies required to neutralize these toxins, preventing them from sticking to human cells and causing harm.

Combining the antibodies LNX-D09, SNX-B03, and a small molecule called varespladib that inhibits venom toxins, Centivax has successfully created a treatment effective against the entire range of 19 species’ toxins.

Their work, which was recently published in the journal Cell, will soon be tested outside of the lab. 

Trials will start with using the serum to treat dogs admitted to Australian veterinary clinics for snake bites. Assuming that goes well, the next step will be to administer human tests.

Researchers also believe that because the serum stems from a human, this should also lower the risk of allergic reactions when being administered to other people. 

“The final product would be a single, pan-anti-venom cocktail,” Professor Peter Kwong of Columbia University, a senior author of the study, told The Times.

Or, he added, they could make two: “One that is for the elapids, and another that is for the viperids, because some areas of the world only have one or the other.”

As for Friede, he maintains his affinity for snakes, though his last bite was in November 2018, when he said “enough is enough,” according to The New York Times.

By then, he had certainly done enough. His pursuit of immunity could feasibly save countless lives.

“I’m really proud that I can do something in life for humanity,” Friede told The New York Times, “to make a difference for people that are 8,000 miles away, that I’m never going to meet, never going to talk to, never going to see, probably.”

The ACO's global endurance racing ladder

I was asked by @historygeek12 on a short explainer for ELMS' support series, this has gotten slightly longer than expected (oops). But hope this helps!

Similarly to the FIA Global Pathway (from Karting to Formula One) the ACO has their own Endurance Racing ladder designed to help aspiring drivers to one day compete at the 24H of Le Mans. Part of this ladder, are ELMS and its support series.

Ligier European Series

The Ligier European Series, launched in 2020, is as quoted by the series itself ‘The first step towards Le Mans.’ This is both for young drivers and amateurs as both will be able to progress through the ranks.

Every car has a maximum of two drivers, but drivers are allowed to compete in the races alone. Most line-ups will consist of either Bronze, Bronze-Bronze, Bronze-Silver, Silver, Silver-Silver. A Bronze-Gold line-up is allowed but a Gold driver has yet to take to the grid this season. Depending on the rating of the drivers they can be categorised in the AM class (Bronze or Bronze-Bronze) or the Pro-AM class (Bronze-Silver).

The series races at the same venues as ELMS this season (except for the Imola round). And is also a support race at the 24H of Le Mans,

Categories:

Ligier JS P4, an entry level prototype that sits just below LMP3’s performance window. (But above Group CN which is used in championships like Radical one make series and the Indian Racing League.)

Ligier JS2 R, an entry level GT car acting as the second category in several Ligier one-make series; of which the biggest the Ligier European Series. It’s relatively low cost and easy in maintenance.

The champions of the JS P4 category will receive €150,000 to be used exclusively in 2024 to enter the Michelin Le Mans Cup. This will have to be with a LMP3 with a team selected by Ligier Automotive.

The champions of the JS2 R category will receive €100,000 to compete exclusively in the Ligier European Series the following year in a Ligier JS P4 with a team selected by the constructor.

Several drivers currently in the ACO ladder started their Sportscar career in this series such as Sébastien Baud (who now competes in WEC) and Gillian Henrion (who now competes in ELMS).

Weekend Format:

Free practice : 2 x 40 minutes

Qualifying : 2 x 15 minutes (Friday)

Race : 2 x 1 hour (Saturday)

Le Mans Cup

The Le Mans Cup, launched in 2016 when the GTC (GT3) category was dropped from ELMS. The series was primarily designed to increase the number of amateur drivers. Despite starting as a GT3 series the series now primarily has LMP3's entered with only 8 GT3 cars and 36 LMP3's taking the start.

The series is as quoted by the series itself 'the first step into the world endurance racing for the young stars of tomorrow.' The grid features 42 cars this season across three classes. LMP3, LMP3 Pro/Am and GT3.

All line-ups have to consist of two drivers. In the LMP3 Pro/Am & GT3 Class a Bronze driver is mandated with the second driver either Silver or Gold. In the LMP3 class line ups will be Silver-Silver or Silver-Gold.

All LMP3 cars are built according to the ACO's LMP3 Technical regulations, teams can choose between four chassis; Ligier JS P325, Duqueine D09, ADESS AD25, and Ginetta G61-LT-P325 Evo. In the GT3 class all FIA GT3 approved chassis are eligible.

The series races at the same venues as ELMS this season (except for the Imola round). And is also a support race at the 24H of Le Mans. As a support series to the 24H of Le Mans the series strays from its usual format. Instead of a single race they will have two race on the full La Sarthe circuit both an hour long. This weekend is called the 'Road to Le Mans' round.

Previously the GT3 champion received a Le Mans invite but unfortunately that is not the case anymore. Now the champions receive priority to apply to join the ELMS grid.

Laurens Hörr is an example of a driver climbing the ladder from the Le Mans Cup. He won the LMP3 championship twice and then moved on to race in several other sportscar series such as ELMS, also winning the championship there in LMP3 and now competing in LMP2.

Weekend Format:

Free Practice : 2 x 60 minutes

Bronze Test : 1 x 30 minutes

Qualifying : 15 minutes per category. (only Bronze drivers can qualify the car for the LMP3 Pro/Am and the GT3 category)

Race – 1 x 2 hours with the exception of the Road To Le Mans (2 x 1 hour) and Silverstone (1h50m) races.

European Le Mans Series

ELMS has a long history (I won't get into it all right now), being founded in 2004 years before the World Endurance Championship. The ACO president launched the series following the success of the American Le Mans Series.

The series has seen many formats, several names and many class changes over the years, LMP2 is the only class that has been there since its inception.

Currently the series is divided into four classes LMP2, LMP2 Pro/Am, LMP3, and LMGT3. While officially teams can choose between four chassis in LMP2, the formula has been Oreca dominated for years now. Which means the grid only features Oreca-07s both in P2 and P2 Pro/Am

In LMP3 teams also have the choice between four chassis (just like in Le Mans Cup.) The series however only features three different ones and is dominated by Ligier. In GT3, cars eligible must be built by a partner manufacturer recognised by the ACO/FIA.

In LMP2 a driver line-up must have at least one Silver driver and cannot have two Platinum drivers. In LMP2 Pro/Am the car must have at least one Bronze driver and cannot have two Platinum drivers. In LMP3 the car must have a at least a single Bronze, the other driver(s) can be Bronze or Silver. In LMGT3 the car must have a bronze driver and no more than one Gold or Platinum driver.

Since LMP2 left WEC, ELMS has been the biggest supplier for the LMP2 grid at Le Mans. With a total of 13 cars making up the 17 car car LMP2 field at this year's 24H of Le Mans. Winning the championship in ELMS gets you an automatic invite to the following year's 24H of Le Mans as described below.

Automatic Le Mans Invitations:

LMP2: 1st and 2nd placed competitors in the overall classifications will receive LMP2 invitations. LMP2 Pro/Am: 1st placed competitor in the overall classifications will receive a LMP2 invitation. LMP3: 1st placed competitor in the overall classifications will receive a LMP2 invitation. LMGT3: 1st placed competitor in the overall classifications will receive a LMGT3 invitation.

Weekend Format:

Free Practice : 2 x 90 minutes

Bronze Test : 1 x 30 minutes

Qualifying : 15 minutes per category. (only Bronze drivers can qualify the car for the LMP2 Pro/Am and the LMGT3 category)

Does it really work?

Always with set pathways like these, there a pros and cons but I think it works rather well.

Malthe Jakobsen is a great example of how this works by looking at his career’s progression. He started his single seater career in 2018, doing two years of Formula 4 and winning the Danish Championship in 2019 but he ultimately switched to sportscar racing in 2020.

In 2020 he started competing LMP3, and continued to compete in the category across various series. He won the ELMS LMP3 Championship in 2022 and was invited by Peugeot to test the Peugeot 9X8 Hypercar during the FIA World Endurance Championship rookie test in November 2022. The following year he moved on to LMP2, finding quite a bit of success in it, (finishing on the podium at Le Mans winning the ALMS championship twice.) That same year he was signed by Peugeot as a junior driver.

Fast forward to 2024, Nico Müller left Peugeot for Porsche which left a seat open in one of their cars. This means Jakobsen was promoted and since the start of this year he has been competing in WEC as a factory Hypercar driver.

Johnny dropped the last of the kids out the window, a little girl exclaiming about her doll. Ponyboy looked around through a teary haze, coughing as he dropped to his knees. He spotted the doll that the girl must have been talking about, pushing himself up and running towards it. He was quick to grab it, turning and finding that Johnny had followed him with wide eyes. "We have to get out," Johnny was shouting, but Ponyboy wasn't understanding why. "We're running out of time!" He followed Johnny anyways, but the sound of cracking wood was loud. Ponyboy looked up and shouted as a flaming beam came down on top of him and Johnny.

"I'll get them, don't worry!" Ponyboy was running before he could process what he had just assured two strangers that he'd do. The man, Jerry, had tried to catch his arm, but Ponyboy was quicker than Jerry was. All Ponyboy could think was that he and Johnny had started the fire.

Ponyboy wasn't about to go through a flaming door, though the thought did cross his mind when a child inside shrieked; a sound barely audible over the roar of the flames. He looked around, finding a big rock that he used to slam through one of the boarded up windows.

Glass rained down on either side of the window, a passing thought that it was surprising that he hadn't cut himself to death when he climbed through. He had felt Dally's jacket catch a few times, and he could only hope that the jacket wasn't damaged, or that Dally would forgive him.

"Ponyboy!" Ponyboy's head jerked in surprise, finding that Johnny had followed him into the church. Ponyboy hadn't realized that Johnny had been following him.

"Is that guy coming?" Ponyboy asked, coughing when smoke filled his lungs. His eyes watered, and Johnny was reaching out hesitantly.

"The window stopped him." Johnny shook his head.

"Too scared?"

"Naw…" Johnny grinned, and Ponyboy's eyes widened slightly in surprise. There was no fear in Johnny's eyes for the first time in just over four months. "Too fat." Ponyboy laughed, a mistake on his part as he coughed, crouching down to get underneath the smoke.

"Where are the kids?" Johnny followed suit, crouching down as he shouted his question. Ponyboy looked around, not spotting a single 'rugrat' as Dally would call them. He grimaced before his eyes landed on the door that lead to the back of the church.

"In the back I guess." Ponyboy hollered back. Johnny made a face, and together the two of them stumbled their way through the church and towards the back. All Ponyboy could think about was how hot everything felt. He almost wanted to take off Dally's jacket, a thought that was there and gone in moments as a flaming beam dropped down behind them, a shower of firey sparks flying up into the air.

Ponyboy coughed as they got to the door, kicking it open as best as he could as more thoughts from the past started to filter through his mind. Was now really the time to be wondering why nothing hurt or to be remembering a time when he had wondered what it was like inside an ember?

Ponyboy had his answer for the last one, it was a red hell.

It took a moment for Ponyboy to realize that one of the kids was screaming his head off, probably what Ponyboy had only barely heard outside of the church. There were five kids, all huddled in the back of the room in a corner. Every single one of them looked to be eight years old or younger.

"Shut up! We're goin' to get you out!" Johnny yelled, the kid looked as surprised as Ponyboy felt, though the kid had stopped hollering. Ponyboy took a moment to look at his friend, feeling almost disconnected as he watched.

Johnny wasn't behaving at all like his old self. He was constantly moving, his eyes darting around and it was obvious that he was forming plan after plan on how to get them out of the situation that they were in now.

Ponyboy saw Johnny break another window, turning and picking up the nearest kid to toss them out of the church.

Ponyboy caught one glimpse of his face; red marked from falling embers and sweat streaked, but he grinned at Ponyboy. He wasn't scared, and Ponyboy realized with a jolt that neither was he. It was the only time that Ponyboy could think of that Johnny didn't look defeated with a suspicious look in his eyes.

Johnny looked like he was having the time of his life.

Ponyboy ran closer, picking up a child and hissing as the child promptly bit him. He was quick to lean out the window, dropping the kid as gently as he could despite the hurry that he was in.

A crowd was there by that time, and the moment that Dally had spotted Ponyboy, he was hollerin' at him and Johnny to get out. Ponyboy didn't pay him any mind, turning back into the church to snatch up another kid. Ponyboy was relieved when this kid didn't bite him. Ponyboy dropped him out the window, not waiting to see if he landed okay or not.

Ponyboy coughed harshly, his breathing labored like it used to get when he was a kid. A wheezing that usually had Darry, Sodapop or their mama checking on him and having him sit down and take some time to calm down from whatever excitement or running around that he had been doing.

Johnny dropped the last of the kids out the window, a little girl exclaiming about her doll. Ponyboy looked around through a teary haze, coughing as he dropped to his knees. He spotted the doll that the girl must have been talking about, pushing himself up and running towards it.

He was quick to grab it, turning and finding that Johnny had followed him with wide eyes.

"We have to get out," Johnny was shouting, but Ponyboy wasn't understanding why. "We're running out of time!" He followed Johnny anyways, but the sound of cracking wood was loud. Ponyboy looked up and shouted as a flaming beam came down on top of him and Johnny.

Ponyboy was, surprisingly, still awake when firefighters had made it to the Church. In one hand, held tightly to his chest, was the doll a little girl had cried about. In the other, he was holding his best friend's hand as tightly as he could, a similar grip coming from Johnny.

And laying half overtop of Johnny, was Dally. He'd come running in, though Ponyboy hadn't remembered seeing him through the haze of red that had taken over everything.

The beam was laying overtop Ponyboy's lower back and overtop of Johnny's upper back. Dally was half overtop of Johnny, and there was rubble splayed out overtop of Dally's back. Ponyboy groaned, feeling too warm to be wearing a jacket like he was.

Ponyboy coughed harshly as Dally moved, pushing the rubble off of his back by simply sitting up on his knees. Ponyboy watched him through heavy eyes as Dally panted, checking on Johnny with an expression of panic.

Dally's head snapped up when Ponyboy groaned, Ponyboy's breathing was coming harsher as he looked around. It took a few moments for him to realize what had happened.

The Church had come down on top of them, and now they were trapped.

"Pony? Pone, hey-" Ponyboy coughed harshly, a feeling of panic bubbling up in his chest as Dally moved to sit in between Johnny and Ponyboy. "Quit that panickin' you hear me?"

"Dal-" Ponyboy's eyes were filled with tears and he couldn't breathe right.

"It's fine. You're fine. Come on, you're fine." Dally's voice sounded… odd to Ponyboy. There was a waiver that didn't belong there and for some reason, Dally's eyes were watery. "You and Johnny are fine. You and Johnny are going to be just fine."

Ponyboy didn't know who Dally was trying to convince, Ponyboy or himself.

"I found them!" A stranger's voice shouted. Ponyboy wasn't sure what happened, other than he felt immense pain and then everything had faded away to black again.

P5T OST Announced!

Yesterday, ATLUS held their pre-TGS media briefing, and while they showed P5T’s opening to attendees, they haven’t posted it yet.

That aside, there was also the announcement of the OST, available on launch day, both on CD and streaming! We also got the full track list, which has been translated by Persona Central.

Excluding the CD-exclusive demos and outtakes, the game contains 102 tracks, which is less than vanilla’s 110, but far more than Strikers’ 45, and seems to contain only 3 remixes of vanilla/Royal tracks. Furthermore, Disc 5 features Repaint Your Heart, and includes a very promising track name that probably alludes to Akechi’s confidant.
