Hiii there! I absolutely adore your vampire!skz, the way you write is absolutely so delicious and I could read it over and over and over (and have…I’m a loyal member of the blood legion/loyal vampire fuckers.)
I had a weird question- how would blood disorders work in your vamp!skz au? I personally have sickle cell- ig I’m just wondering if blood disorders would be a deal breaker- like if it would taste gross or unfulfilling for the vampire who drinks it. Would disorders like these disqualify admission into blood doll circles? Would there be a secret market of vampires who’d pay high price for “different” blood? How do you think it would taste to a vampire? How would vampire!skz handle a blood doll or a soulmate who has a history of imperfections with their blood?
I am so thrilled to be a part of this legion of freaks and I cannot wait to be reading more of what you post on here 💕
OH ANON. You sweet, blood-rich, gorgeous anon. You didn’t send a weird question. You sent a banger.
let’s talk about blood disorders in the Vamp!SKZ AU. And more importantly, what it means to be wanted when your blood isn’t what the world calls “normal.”
· · ──────༺♱༻────── · ·· · ──────༺♱༻────── · ·· · ──────
🩸 B L O O D D I S O R D E R S I N T H E V A M P ! S K Z A U 🧬
or: what happens when your blood is not “perfect,” but still yours.
❓ Q: How would blood disorders work in this universe? Would they taste gross, be dangerous, or disqualify you from being a Blood Doll or soulmate?
💉 SCIENCE FIRST, BLOOD SECOND:
In the vamp!SKZ AU, vampires are highly attuned to blood composition—not just for flavor, but survival. Their entire feeding experience is a chemical, hormonal, emotional interaction. Blood is more than liquid—it’s data. Memory. Soulprint.
That means blood disorders like sickle cell, thalassemia, hemophilia, etc., do register differently. But not as “gross” or “impure.” Vampire tongues and scent receptors don’t classify by human ideas of normal—they register signature. Think: distinct melody, not broken song.
⚙️ BIO-VAMP PHYSIOLOGY:
Abnormal vampires (like Chan, Minho, Hyunjin, Felix and Jeongin) have ultra-refined palates and metabolically enhanced processing systems. They can read your blood like a fingerprint.
They do notice when blood is oxygen-deprived, or contains misshapen cells, or coagulant inconsistencies.
But here’s the twist: 🧬 The rarer the blood, the more valuable it is.
It’s not about perfection. It’s about uniqueness.
🌑 W O U L D B L O O D D I S O R D E R S D I S Q U A L I F Y
💔 Absolutely not. You might not be mainstream market material in elite Blood Doll circles (the sterile, elite-approved feed farms for idle nobles), but:
Blood Dolls are chosen. Soulmates are fated. And fate doesn’t give a damn about genetics.
Some vampire households would reject atypical blood due to fear, ignorance, or outdated purity standards. But the trueblooded elite—especially Abnormals—are known to value rarity above all else.
Sickle cell blood? That’s a melody only a few can sing. And the right vampire? They’ll memorize your rhythm until it becomes gospel.
🛑 S E C R E T M A R K E T ? O H B A B Y Y E S .
The Shadow Market, often whispered as “The Velvet Below,” trades in all types of off-grid blood. There are factions of vampires (collectors, fetishists, anarchists) who seek out:
Blood with rare traits (sickle cell, hemophilia, RH-null, Bombay phenotype)
Blood from ill or near-death donors (said to taste “closer to the veil”)
Blood altered by intense trauma, hallucinations, or strong pharmaceutical history
“Bruised blood” (term for chronically ill donors with uncommon chemistry)
It’s dangerous. It’s underground. But it’s very real. And some vampires will pay entire estates for a vial of blood that tastes like nothing else on earth.
👅 H O W D O E S I T T A S T E ?
To vampires? Blood with disorders is often:
Deeper in flavour (like aged wine)
Softer or sharper in texture (depending on viscosity/coagulation)
Emotionally louder — pain and resilience imprint the blood with psychic weight
Occasionally more feral or unstable to drink — some vamps say it “fights back” or burns going down (not in a bad way)
It’s not about yum or yuck. It’s about experience. Chan would say:
“It sings different. I like when it surprises me.”
❤️🩹 H O W W O U L D V A M P ! S K Z H A N D L E A S O U L M A T E W I T H B L O O D I M P E R F E C T I O N S ?
Let’s go one by one, just a taste:
Bang Chan
Would immediately research your condition in its entirety. Probably already owns three private medical labs. Knows more about your body than your doctors.
“Your blood is yours. It chose me, remember? That makes it perfect.” Never feeds without tracking your vitals. Will invent a better treatment if one doesn’t exist. You’ll feel like both a temple and a miracle.
Minho
Barely blinks. Already knew. Says nothing, just makes subtle accommodations. Would kill anyone who even insinuated you were defective.
“It’s your blood. That means it’s mine. Problem?” Will literally destroy a blood bank and offer his vein in silence.
Changbin
EMOTIONAL REACTION KING. Cries when he finds out, not out of fear, but love.
“You’re still here. After all that. You’re still fighting.” Says your blood tastes like fire and steel and poetry. Calls it “warrior’s wine.”
Hyunjin
Romanticizes it instantly. Paints it.
“Your blood bends the rules and still blooms. That’s art.” Would never see it as weakness. Only story. Only strength.
Jisung
Worries about hurting you—asks a million times, makes spreadsheets, will delay feeding until he's 3000% sure it’s safe.
“You’re not broken. You’re just built different. Like... like titanium spaghetti or something?? I dunno—cool though!!”
Felix
Soft. Devoted. Will read your blood like Braille and cry over its history.
“Every cell chose to keep you alive. How could I not treasure that?” Makes feeding rituals sacred. Always checks in. Never rushes.
Seungmin
Dry humor activated.
“Well, if you die mid-bite, that’d be awkward. Let’s not.” But deeply respectful. Will advocate for you in any blood space. Gives no tolerance to elitist blood snobs. Will snark them into dust.
Jeongin
Terrified he’ll hurt you, so he learns everything. EVERYTHING.
“I’ll never bite without a backup plan, snacks, saline, and a playlist.” Ends up being your biggest fan and your softest nurse.
T D L R :
– your blood 🩸 is not “bad” or “gross,” it’s just built different™ – vampires taste everything 🧠🔬 — cell shape, oxygen levels, iron, hormones — it’s science but sexy – blood with disorders like sickle cell = 🍷 rare vintage energy – it might taste sharper, warmer, richer, or have an emotional “kick” — like spiced wine or electric honey 🧃⚡️
💅 You are not disqualified. You are couture.
– elite vampires might be snobs 🙄 but Abnormals? they’re out here like:
“mmm trauma-infused resilience with an iron twist? 10/10.” – secret vampire markets exist where your blood would go for $$$ bc it’s unique 💸🧛♂️ – flavor isn’t about “normal,” it’s about signature ✍️ – and if you're a soulmate? bitch it's FATED. they’d fight God for a sip 😤💍
· · ──────༺♱༻────── · ·· · ──────༺♱༻────── · ·· · ──────
Thank you for bleeding this question into my inbox. You, my dear, are not disqualified. You’re one of the rarest vintages in the vault 🩸🦷💌

Elon Musk’s minions—from trusted sidekicks to random college students and former Musk company interns—have taken over the General Services Administration, a critical government agency that manages federal offices and technology. Already, the team is attempting to use White House security credentials to gain unusual access to GSA tech, deploying a suite of new AI software, and recreating the office in X’s image, according to leaked documents obtained by WIRED.
Some of the same people who helped Musk take over Twitter more than two years ago are now registered as official GSA employees. Nicole Hollander, who slept in Twitter HQ as an unofficial member of Musk’s transition team, has high-level agency access and an official government email address, according to documents viewed by WIRED. Hollander’s husband, Steve Davis, also slept in the office. He has now taken on a leading role in Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Thomas Shedd, the recently installed director of the Technology Transformation Services within GSA, worked as a software engineer at Tesla for eight years. Edward Coristine, who previously interned at Neuralink, has been onboarded along with Ethan Shaotran, a Harvard senior who is developing his own OpenAI-backed scheduling assistant and participated in an xAI hackathon.
“I believe these people do not want to help the federal government provide services to the American people,” says a current GSA employee who asked not to be named, citing fears of retaliation. “They are acting like this is a takeover of a tech company.”
The team appears to be carrying out Musk’s agenda: slashing the federal government as quickly as possible. They’re currently targeting a 50 percent reduction in spending for every office managed by the GSA, according to documents obtained by WIRED.
There also appears to be an effort to use IT credentials from the Executive Office of the President to access GSA laptops and internal GSA infrastructure. Typically, access to agency systems requires workers to be employed at such agencies, sources say. While Musk's team could be trying to obtain better laptops and equipment from GSA, sources fear that the mandate laid out in the DOGE executive order would grant the body broad access to GSA systems and data. That includes sensitive procurement data, data internal to all the systems and services GSA offers, and internal monitoring software to surveil GSA employees as part of normal auditing and security processes.
The access could give Musk’s proxies the ability to remote into laptops, listen in on meetings, read emails, among many other things, a former Biden official told WIRED on Friday.
“Granting DOGE staff, many of whom aren't government employees, unfettered access to internal government systems and sensitive data poses a huge security risk to the federal government and to the American public,” the Biden official said. “Not only will DOGE be able to review procurement-sensitive information about major government contracts, it'll also be able to actively surveil government employees.”
The new GSA leadership team has prioritized downsizing the GSA’s real estate portfolio, canceling convenience contracts, and rolling out AI tools for use by the federal government, according to internal documents and interviews with sources familiar with the situation. At a GSA office in Washington, DC, earlier this week, there were three items written on a white board sitting in a large, vacant room. “Spending Cuts $585 m, Regulations Removed, 15, Square feet sold/terminated 203,000 sf,” it read, according to a photo viewed by WIRED. There’s no note of who wrote the message, but it appears to be a tracker of cuts made or proposed by the team.
“We notified the commercial real estate market that two GSA properties would soon be listed for sale, and we terminated three leases,” Stephen Ehikian, the newly appointed GSA acting administrator, said in an email to GSA staff on Tuesday, confirming the agency’s focus on lowering real estate costs. “This is our first step in right-sizing the real estate portfolio.”
The proposed changes extend even inside the physical spaces at the GSA offices. Hollander has requested multiple “resting rooms,” for use by the A-suite, a team of employees affiliated with the GSA administrator’s office.
On January 29, a working group of high-ranking GSA employees, including the deputy general counsel and the chief administrative services officer, met to discuss building a resting room prototype. The team mapped out how to get the necessary funding and waivers to build resting rooms in the office, according to an agenda viewed by WIRED.
After Musk bought Twitter, Hollander and Davis moved into the office with their newborn baby. Hollander helped oversee real estate and office design—including the installation of hotel rooms at Twitter HQ, according to a lawsuit later filed by Twitter executives. During the installation process, one of the executives emailed to say that the plans for the rooms were likely not code compliant. Hollander “visited him in person and emphatically instructed him to never put anything about the project in writing again,” the lawsuit alleged. Employees were allegedly instructed to call the hotel rooms “sleeping rooms” and to say they were just for taking naps.
Hollander has also requested access to Public Buildings Service applications; PBS owns and leases office space to government agencies. The timing of the access request lines up with Ehikian’s announcement about shrinking GSA’s real estate cost.
Musk’s lieutenants are also working to authorize the use of AI tools, including Google Gemini and Cursor (an AI coding assistant), for federal workers. On January 30, the group met with Google to discuss Telemetry, a software used to monitor the health and performance of applications, according to a document obtained by WIRED.
A-suite engineers, including Coristine and Shaotran, have requested access to a variety of GSA records, including nearly 10 years of accounting data, as well as detailed records on vendor payments, purchase orders, and revenue.
The GSA takeover mimics Musk’s strategy at other federal agencies like the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Earlier this month, Amanda Scales, who worked in talent at Musk’s xAI, was appointed as OPM chief of staff. Riccardo Biasini, former Tesla engineer and director of operations at the Boring company, is now a senior adviser to the director. Earlier this week, Musk cohorts at the US Office of Personnel Management emailed more than 2 million federal workers offering “deferred resignations,” allegedly promising employees their regular pay and benefits through September 30.
The email closely mirrored the “extremely hardcore” note Musk sent to Twitter staff in November 2022, shortly after buying the company.
Many federal workers thought the email was fake—as with Twitter, it seemed designed to force people to leave, slashing headcount costs without the headache of an official layoff.
Ehikian followed up with a note to staff stressing that the email was legitimate. “Yes, the OPM email is real and should be taken very seriously,” he said in an email obtained by WIRED. He added that employees should expect a “further consolidation of offices and centralization of functions.”
On Thursday night, GSA workers received a third email related to the resignation request called “Fork in the Road FAQs.” The email explained that employees who resign from their positions would not be required to work and could get a second job. “We encourage you to find a job in the private sector as soon as you would like to do so,” it read. “The way to greater American prosperity is encouraging people to move from lower productivity jobs in the public sector to higher productivity jobs in the private sector.”
The third question posed in the FAQ asked, “Will I really get my full pay and benefits during the entire period through September 30, even if I get a second job?”
“Yes,” the answer read. “You will also accrue further personal leave days, vacation days, etc. and be paid out for unused leave at your final resignation date.”
However, multiple GSA employees have told WIRED that they are refusing to resign, especially after the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) told its members on Tuesday that the offer could be void.
“There is not yet any evidence the administration can or will uphold its end of the bargain, that Congress will go along with this unilateral massive restructuring, or that appropriated funds can be used this way, among other issues that have been raised,” the union said in a notice.
There is also concern that, under Musk’s influence, the federal government might not pay for the duration of the deferred resignation period. Thousands of Twitter employees have sued Musk alleging that he failed to pay their agreed upon severance. Last year, one class action suit was dismissed in Musk’s favor.
In an internal video viewed by WIRED, Ehikian reiterated that GSA employees had the “opportunity to participate in a deferred resignation program,” per the email sent by OPM on January 28. Pressing his hands into the namaste gesture, Ehikian added, “If you choose to participate, I offer you my heartfelt gratitude for your service to this nation. If you choose to stay at the GSA, we’ll work together to implement the four pillars from the OPM memo.” He ended the video by saying thank you and pressing his hands into namaste again.

Samantha Delouya at CNN:
Sharon Savoy, a 65-year-old retiree from just outside of Toronto, had planned a typical three-month stay at her vacation home in Miami earlier this month. But then she abruptly decided to put the trip on hold, and now she wonders when she’ll ever go back to her second home. “I should be there right now,” Savoy told CNN. “But we’re trying to debate whether or not it’s a good idea to go.” Savoy is one of the hundreds of thousands of Canadians who make their home in warmer parts of the United States during Canada’s colder months. In fact, Canadians are the top foreign buyers of US properties — making up 13% of all home purchases in 2024, mostly concentrated in Florida and Arizona — according to a July report from the National Association of Realtors.
But as trade tensions grow between the two countries, many Canadians have taken the conflict to heart, loudly booing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at sporting events and boycotting US-made products. Some Canadian snowbirds are reconsidering their lives in the United States altogether. US-based Realtors in Arizona and Florida told CNN they are fielding calls from Canadians looking to sell their homes, and recent data shows Canadian tourism to the United States has slowed to a trickle. Stephen Fine, the president of Snowbird Advisor, a Canadian company that provides real estate, legal and insurance guidance to Canadians who travel south for the winter, said many of his company’s members feel “angry, upset, disappointed and frustrated.” “A number of them are considering alternative destinations to the US next year. Some want to sell their US properties,” Fine said. Savoy said that although she loves her Miami home, she is putting off a visit to show solidarity with her fellow Canadians. “I’m in these snowbird groups where people have been saying we shouldn’t be spending money in the US,” she said. “I don’t want my country to feel like I’m betraying them during this threatening time.”
[...] The drop-off in travel from Canada to the United States comes amid a bubbling tit-for-tat trade squabble between the two nations. The latest blow came this past week: US President Donald Trump said he would place a 25% tariff on all auto imports, which Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called a “direct attack” in violation of US trade agreements with Canada. Earlier this month, the Trump administration officially placed a 25% tariff on most of the other imports from Canada and Mexico. The president also ramped up threats to annex Canada and make it the 51st state. Canada responded by announcing retaliatory tariffs on billions of dollars worth of American goods, though the trade war threatens to plunge Canada’s economy into a recession. “It is clear that the United States is no longer a reliable partner,” Carney said Thursday, adding that Canada would look to shift to trading more with other countries. Miles Zimbaluk, an Arizona-based Realtor who offers cross-border real estate guidance for Canadians looking to buy and sell US property, said he believes politics isn’t the only thing motivating more Canadians to list their properties for sale. Zimbaluk said a weakened Canadian dollar has factored into some snowbirds’ decision-making process. Last month, the Canadian dollar fell to its lowest level against the US dollar since 2003, meaning that everyday goods like groceries and gas have become significantly more expensive for Canadians. It also means that Canadians stand to make a profit by moving their money from the United States to Canada.
Canadian snowbirds have historically made the US (especially Florida and Arizona) their second homes during the winter; however, due to Donald Trump’s bellicose conduct towards Canada, snowbirds could be reconsidering calling the USA their 2nd home during the winter.

Weaponizing violence. With alarming regularity, the nation continues to be subjected to spates of violence that terrorizes the public, destabilizes the country’s ecosystem, and gives the government greater justifications to crack down, lock down, and institute even more authoritarian policies for the so-called sake of national security without many objections from the citizenry.
Weaponizing surveillance, pre-crime and pre-thought campaigns. Surveillance, digital stalking and the data mining of the American people add up to a society in which there’s little room for indiscretions, imperfections, or acts of independence. When the government sees all and knows all and has an abundance of laws to render even the most seemingly upstanding citizen a criminal and lawbreaker, then the old adage that you’ve got nothing to worry about if you’ve got nothing to hide no longer applies. Add pre-crime programs into the mix with government agencies and corporations working in tandem to determine who is a potential danger and spin a sticky spider-web of threat assessments, behavioral sensing warnings, flagged “words,” and “suspicious” activity reports using automated eyes and ears, social media, behavior sensing software, and citizen spies, and you having the makings for a perfect dystopian nightmare. The government’s war on crime has now veered into the realm of social media and technological entrapment, with government agents adopting fake social media identities and AI-created profile pictures in order to surveil, target and capture potential suspects.
Weaponizing digital currencies, social media scores and censorship. Tech giants, working with the government, have been meting out their own version of social justice by way of digital tyranny and corporate censorship, muzzling whomever they want, whenever they want, on whatever pretext they want in the absence of any real due process, review or appeal. Unfortunately, digital censorship is just the beginning. Digital currencies (which can be used as “a tool for government surveillance of citizens and control over their financial transactions”), combined with social media scores and surveillance capitalism create a litmus test to determine who is worthy enough to be part of society and punish individuals for moral lapses and social transgressions (and reward them for adhering to government-sanctioned behavior). In China, millions of individuals and businesses, blacklisted as “unworthy” based on social media credit scores that grade them based on whether they are “good” citizens, have been banned from accessing financial markets, buying real estate or travelling by air or train.
Weaponizing compliance. Even the most well-intentioned government law or program can be—and has been—perverted, corrupted and used to advance illegitimate purposes once profit and power are added to the equation. The war on terror, the war on drugs, the war on COVID-19, the war on illegal immigration, asset forfeiture schemes, road safety schemes, school safety schemes, eminent domain: all of these programs started out as legitimate responses to pressing concerns and have since become weapons of compliance and control in the police state’s hands.
Weaponizing entertainment. For the past century, the Department of Defense’s Entertainment Media Office has provided Hollywood with equipment, personnel and technical expertise at taxpayer expense. In exchange, the military industrial complex has gotten a starring role in such blockbusters as Top Gun and its rebooted sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which translates to free advertising for the war hawks, recruitment of foot soldiers for the military empire, patriotic fervor by the taxpayers who have to foot the bill for the nation’s endless wars, and Hollywood visionaries working to churn out dystopian thrillers that make the war machine appear relevant, heroic and necessary. As Elmer Davis, a CBS broadcaster who was appointed the head of the Office of War Information, observed, “The easiest way to inject a propaganda idea into most people’s minds is to let it go through the medium of an entertainment picture when they do not realize that they are being propagandized.”
Weaponizing behavioral science and nudging. Apart from the overt dangers posed by a government that feels justified and empowered to spy on its people and use its ever-expanding arsenal of weapons and technology to monitor and control them, there’s also the covert dangers associated with a government empowered to use these same technologies to influence behaviors en masse and control the populace. In fact, it was President Obama who issued an executive order directing federal agencies to use “behavioral science” methods to minimize bureaucracy and influence the way people respond to government programs. It’s a short hop, skip and a jump from a behavioral program that tries to influence how people respond to paperwork to a government program that tries to shape the public’s views about other, more consequential matters. Thus, increasingly, governments around the world—including in the United States—are relying on “nudge units” to steer citizens in the direction the powers-that-be want them to go, while preserving the appearance of free will.
Weaponizing desensitization campaigns aimed at lulling us into a false sense of security. The events of recent years—the invasive surveillance, the extremism reports, the civil unrest, the protests, the shootings, the bombings, the military exercises and active shooter drills, the lockdowns, the color-coded alerts and threat assessments, the fusion centers, the transformation of local police into extensions of the military, the distribution of military equipment and weapons to local police forces, the government databases containing the names of dissidents and potential troublemakers—have conspired to acclimate the populace to accept a police state willingly, even gratefully.
Weaponizing fear and paranoia. The language of fear is spoken effectively by politicians on both sides of the aisle, shouted by media pundits from their cable TV pulpits, marketed by corporations, and codified into bureaucratic laws that do little to make our lives safer or more secure. Fear, as history shows, is the method most often used by politicians to increase the power of government and control a populace, dividing the people into factions, and persuading them to see each other as the enemy. This Machiavellian scheme has so ensnared the nation that few Americans even realize they are being manipulated into adopting an “us” against “them” mindset. Instead, fueled with fear and loathing for phantom opponents, they agree to pour millions of dollars and resources into political elections, militarized police, spy technology and endless wars, hoping for a guarantee of safety that never comes. All the while, those in power—bought and paid for by lobbyists and corporations—move their costly agendas forward, and “we the suckers” get saddled with the tax bills and subjected to pat downs, police raids and round-the-clock surveillance.
Weaponizing genetics. Not only does fear grease the wheels of the transition to fascism by cultivating fearful, controlled, pacified, cowed citizens, but it also embeds itself in our very DNA so that we pass on our fear and compliance to our offspring. It’s called epigenetic inheritance, the transmission through DNA of traumatic experiences. For example, neuroscientists observed that fear can travel through generations of mice DNA. As The Washington Post reports, “Studies on humans suggest that children and grandchildren may have felt the epigenetic impact of such traumatic events such as famine, the Holocaust and the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.”
Weaponizing the future. With greater frequency, the government has been issuing warnings about the dire need to prepare for the dystopian future that awaits us. For instance, the Pentagon training video, “Megacities: Urban Future, the Emerging Complexity,” predicts that by 2030 (coincidentally, the same year that society begins to achieve singularity with the metaverse) the military would be called on to use armed forces to solve future domestic political and social problems. What they’re really talking about is martial law, packaged as a well-meaning and overriding concern for the nation’s security. The chilling five-minute training video paints an ominous picture of the future bedeviled by “criminal networks,” “substandard infrastructure,” “religious and ethnic tensions,” “impoverishment, slums,” “open landfills, over-burdened sewers,” a “growing mass of unemployed,” and an urban landscape in which the prosperous economic elite must be protected from the impoverishment of the have nots. “We the people” are the have-nots.
The end goal of these mind control campaigns—packaged in the guise of the greater good—is to see how far the American people will allow the government to go in re-shaping the country in the image of a totalitarian police state.

This Breaking Bad pilot script that I recently purchased at an estate sale is an incredibly rare find! Still sealed from the production company, this authorized “research copy” marks the very FIRST DRAFT released to the cast, which would later be modified by the actors/director/producers. 📃
A "research copy" of a script also includes detailed notes, citations, and supporting information gathered during the research process for the project, essentially serving as a working document to ensure accuracy and depth of the story elements based on real-world facts and data. It’s a true piece of filmmaking history from the very beginning of the hit AMC show! 📺

I'm suffering technological oppression
(do not take this at all seriously, this is absolutely a minor problem)
Okay, so in my earlier time in my PhD program, I saved up and replaced my shitty old HP laptop with a Dell G3 3590. The relevant information about it for this whining session is that it has two main drives: the OS (C:) drive, an SSD with 220 GB, and then an HDD with 930 GB.
This was a pretty good gaming/academia laptop for a couple of years, but at that point, developed some wonky problems including erratic communication with my mouse, very slow processing times, and emitting a terrifying scream from the depths of hell whenever it started up (an alarm to tell me that a fan wasn't working, it turned out). This all developed post-warranty and for various reasons I ended up deciding on replacing it rather than having it fixed, so I saved up again and got an MSI laptop I refer to as "Pherenike" or "the Beast" for reasons I won't get into.
Pherenike only has one (SSD) drive with 800 GB or whatever and is incredibly fast and powerful for everything I've wanted to do, awesome. I wrote basically my entire dissertation on Pherenike, saved every file even remotely related to my research on it, and it was absolutely fantastic for a year. But riiiight after the warranty expired, the laptop's monitor started coming off and it could no longer close, which made it useless as a laptop. Worse still, the hinge situation got progressively worse until the screen was just sort of flopping around unless I set it up in exactly the right position and nobody moved it. It's gotten bad enough that I sent my dad a video about this known MSI issue and sadly left Pherenike with him after backing up its data.
Meanwhile, my university job really needs me to have a working computer of some kind. So I resuscitated the Dell, updated everything, and tried to figure out the old problems. The mouse has been fine thus far (/fingers crossed), the single dysfunctional fan is still causing the alarm but I can get past it with ESC for now, and I realized that part of the reason it had slowed down so badly was that the OS/C: drive, the SSD, was holding basically everything that mattered and was way too full. So I moved documents, pictures, and low-requirement programs over to the HDD/D: drive, and several updates later it's more or less functioning, even if it couldn't keep up with Pherenike (...if Pherenike could stay upright, anyway).
ANYWAY I saw that the cool new BG3 patch had released, but... even after moving every possible non-essential file over to the HDD/D: drive, the Dell's OS/C: SSD only has 53 GB (out of 220) free and I can't download BG3 onto my main drive (the SSD is a basic requirement for it to run properly). Everything else still on my SSD is either trivially tiny or something that came with the system and seems rather important to keeping it running. It seems absurd that this would amount to over 150 GB of the most valuable real estate on the machine (a lot of this seems to be "Alienware Command Center" or something like that, which is spread across a zillion different folders in different parts of C:) but so it is.
So I own the game and I have two computers that meet the specifications and one is the computer I am writing this post on, but I can't actually play it on either of them :(
#/flops dramatically#OH NO i have two laptops sounds stupid but i wanted to get back to bg3 now that i'm free only for pherenike to BETRAY me... :( :(#we'll see if my dad can figure out the hinge/monitor situation#but otherwise i'm stuck with the dell. which is fine. even gw2 sorta runs okay on it. but waaaaah#anghraine babbles#anghraine whines#anghraine's gaming#pretty sure i sold my soul to larian studios#long post

Fox News's Bret Baier recently interviewed Elon Musk and other Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) executives, outlining their plans for the program while sharing some harrowing realities about our federal government. Tom Krause, a member of DOGE tasked with overhauling the Treasury Department, revealed, "The Federal Government could not pass an audit." This remark raises questions about accountability within government regulatory agencies. Bureaucracies that provide oversight to corporations expect a high standard of accountability, compliance, and quality, but do they offer a comparable level of excellence and culpability in their practices?
Government regulations continuously pressure corporations and small businesses. Extensive regulations span environmental policies, guidelines for handling sensitive materials, data management protocols, and manufacturing rules, to name a few. The scope and stringency of these requirements vary by industry, with sectors such as pharmaceuticals, commerce, energy, and real estate often facing the most burdensome mandates. In addition, companies remain persistently threatened with unannounced audits and regulatory appraisals.
Pharmaceutical companies must navigate a complex regulatory framework. They adhere to protocols from bench to bedside, such as Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Tissue Practices (GTP), current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), and Good Documentation Practices (GDP), among others. Employees are burdened with superfluous and monotonous training requirements. Minor deviations or documentation errors trigger rigorous investigations that can incur substantial costs and delay product releases. Moreover, any changes to manufacturing specifications require additional FDA approval. Should a drug later exhibit a secondary benefit, it must undergo a separate approval process to avoid legal issues related to "off-label use." Every procedure -- from ensuring sterility and proper cleaning to managing recalls -- must be traceable and subject to strict, documented guidelines.

While you were sleeping ...
Two plane crashes in two days create the largest amount of fatalities in the US in more than twenty years
In DC a passenger plane collided with a US military helicopter, 67 people were killed.
Trump blamed Diversity and Inclusion polices under Democratic administrations for the accident, and refused to go to the site of the crash as it was 'just water'. However the current hiring practices for air traffic controllers were put in place when Trump was President.
A small private medical plane crashed in Philadelphia, killing all on board and injuring people on the ground.
Elon Musk forced the Head of the FAA out of office, as this individual was prosecuting Musk for accidents involving Musk's company SpaceX
Trump shut down the Aviation Security Advisory Committee last week as well as firing the Transportation Secretary, and put a freeze on all government hires when he was inaugurated, which left the DC tower with only one air traffic controller at the time of the accident instead of two.
Trump plans to put 25% tariffs on our allies Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on China (additional) as of Feb 1,
which is tanking the stock market and guaranteed to raise prices if trade wars begin
The a top Treasury official, having served in a non partisan fashion for 30 years is retiring in protest over Elon Musk seeking access to all federal monies through The Bureau of Fiscal Service
This secure system processes Social Security and Medicare benefits, federal salaries, payments to government contractors, grants, and tax refunds, among it's purview. Only a small number of career officials control Treasury’s payment systems. Experts do not know why Musk would need this level of access.
ELON MUSK LOCKS FEDERAL EMPLOYEES OUT OF THEIR ACCOUNTS
Workers at the Office of Personnel Management, have had their access to department data revoked. They lost access to the Enterprise Human Resources Integration database, which includes the dates of birth, Social Security numbers, appraisals, home addresses, pay grades, and length of service of government workers.
“We have no visibility into what they are doing with the computer and data systems, There is no oversight. It creates real cybersecurity and hacking implications.”
Trump changed the email system so that every single federal worker could be contacted with one email. all 13,000 employees of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, were flooded with explicit spam emails on Thursday.
The federal gov system email no longer has a basic form of security. Trump admin is now being sued for the lack of privacy for all federal employees
Trump has fired all prosecutors at the DOJ who were linked to investigations of Jan 6th insurrection, despite the fact they were only following the direction of their bosses. The prosecuters might file a class action lawsuit.
Trump fired the Head of the Consumer Protection Agency
which among it's numerous investigations held Wall Street accountable for cheating hard-working families and prevented the de-banking of Americans across the country
FEDERAL EMPLOYEES ARE NOT TAKING TRUMP'S FALSE 'BUYOUT' which has led to a begging email from Trump, the President has no authority and no budget to pay employees for not working.
Trump is telling federal employees to remove any pronouns from their email signatures
Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois is blocking any January 6 rioters pardoned by Donald Trump from working for the state, other states may follow suit.
Trump has gutted the National Labor Relations Board and moves to invalidate labor agreements with federal workers
Thousands of agents with the FBI are facing reivews, possible loyalty tests and terminations
ELON MUSK has put his employees into the General Services Administration which controls public buildings, he's taking their proprietary public-paid tech and planning to sell off government real estate.
REMEMBER, THE OFFICE OF DOGE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE 'ADVISORY' NOT LET LOOSE TO CONTROL THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, ONLY CONGRESS CAN SET THE BUDGET AND DIRECT SPENDING, ALL OF THESE ACTIONS ARE ILLEGAL.
SEEYOU IN COURT

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul wants to ban the use of real estate management software that sets rent prices via algorithm—what federal prosecutors say can amount to collusion that artificially inflates rents during a nation-wide housing crisis. Hochul is expected to announce the proposal in her State of the State speech Tuesday, a week after the U.S. Justice Department sued six of the country’s biggest landlords for allegedly using “anticompetitive pricing algorithms” to set rents. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the rent is too damn high and New Yorkers need our help,” Gov. Hochul said in a statement shared with City Limits ahead of her annual address.
“Last year, we passed the most significant housing legislation in generations, working to build more supply and increase tenant protections,” Hochul continued. “There’s more work to do, which is why I’m proposing new legislation to crack down on algorithmic abuses that increase the cost of living and force rents sky-high. We need to ban the sale or use of price-fixing software—so tenants have a fair shot at an affordable home.”
Should her proposal pass, New York would join jurisdictions like San Francisco and Philadelphia in prohibiting such software, which often uses competitor data to set suggested rents. A report by the White House’s Council of Economic Advisers in December that sought to “quantify the anticompetitive impact of algorithmic pricing on rents across the country” estimated the practice cost renters $3.8 billion in 2023, what its authors warned “is likely a lower bound on the true costs.”
“Algorithmic pricing weakens competition because it can facilitate price coordination among landlords who would otherwise be competing,” the White House report reads. “Our analysis indicates that if price coordination was eliminated, there would be an economically meaningful decrease in price mark-ups for rental units using pricing algorithms.”
Among the most popular of these technologies comes from the company RealPage, which is the target of an antitrust lawsuit filed by the Justice Department, following reporting on its practices by the investigative news outlet ProPublica. RealPage has characterized the criticism against it as “demonstrably false,” saying its customers have “100 [percent] discretion to accept or reject software price recommendations.”
But in its legal complaint against the company and six major landlords who used the software, the DOJ alleges that, “RealPage replaces competition with coordination.”
“It substitutes unity for rivalry. It subverts competition and the competitive process,” the complaint reads. “It does so openly and directly—and American renters are left paying the price.”
Nationwide, nearly half of the 42.5 million renter households in the U.S. are considered rent-burdened, meaning they spend at least a third of their income on housing, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
In New York, that rate is even higher, with more than 52 percent of renters meeting that threshold, according to an analysis by the state comptroller last year.
Gov. Hochul is set to deliver her State of the State beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The speech will be livestreamed on the governor’s website here.

What Is a Desktop Appraisal and How Does It Work?
As technology continues to transform the real estate and mortgage industry, many traditional processes are being reimagined for efficiency and convenience. One such innovation is the desktop appraisal - a modern alternative to the conventional home appraisal method. For homeowners, buyers and lenders, understanding what a desktop appraisal is and how it works can offer clarity and potentially faster, cost-effective options for property valuation.
Understanding the Basics: What Is a Desktop Appraisal?
A desktop appraisal is a type of real estate valuation where the appraiser evaluates a property's value remotely - without ever setting foot on the premises. Instead of visiting the property in person, the appraiser relies on available digital data sources, such as:
Tax assessments
Multiple Listing Service (MLS) data
Public property records
Floor plans
Aerial or satellite imagery
Renovation permits and building records
By analyzing these records from their office, appraisers can generate a professional opinion of value. Desktop appraisals have become more prominent in recent years, especially during periods when in-person inspections are impractical or unnecessary, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic.
How Does a Desktop Appraisal Differ from Other Appraisal Types?
There are a few different types of appraisals in real estate and each serves a unique purpose:
Traditional Appraisals: The appraiser visits the property in person, inspects the interior and exterior and creates a comprehensive report based on direct observation and comparable sales.
Hybrid Appraisals: A third party (not the appraiser) collects on-site property data, including photos and measurements. The appraiser then reviews the collected data remotely and completes the appraisal.
Desktop Appraisals: The appraiser performs the entire valuation remotely, using only publicly available or third-party data. There is no physical inspection at all.
While a traditional appraisal is the gold standard for accuracy, desktop appraisals are gaining traction for being faster and more scalable, especially in low-risk or high-volume scenarios.
When Are Desktop Appraisals Used?
Desktop appraisals aren’t suitable for every transaction. However, they are an excellent option under the right circumstances. Common uses include:
Mortgage pre-approvals or purchase transactions
Home equity loans or home equity lines of credit (HELOCs)
Portfolio evaluations for banks and investors
Tax appeal support
Insurance valuation purposes
Market analysis for sellers determining listing prices
According to Fannie Mae guidelines, desktop appraisals are typically only allowed for purchase transactions and may come with property-type and loan-to-value (LTV) restrictions.
Advantages of Desktop Appraisals
Faster Turnaround Time: Without the need for scheduling on-site visits, a desktop appraisal can often be completed in a matter of days - sometimes even hours - compared to the one to three weeks it may take for a full appraisal.
Cost-Effective: Desktop appraisals are typically less expensive than traditional ones, with costs often ranging between $75 to $200, compared to $300 to $500 or more for full appraisals.
Less Intrusive: Since no one needs to visit the home, desktop appraisals are more convenient for homeowners who may not want the hassle of coordinating an in-person inspection.
Reduced Bias: With no physical interaction, the likelihood of subjective bias due to a home's appearance, location or occupant decreases.
Scalability for Lenders: Lenders with large loan portfolios can quickly obtain valuations across multiple properties, making this an efficient solution for bulk transactions.
Limitations and Risks of Desktop Appraisals
Limited Data Accuracy: If the data sources are outdated, inaccurate or incomplete, the final appraisal may not reflect the property's true market value.
Not Universally Accepted: Many lenders and loan products still require traditional appraisals. Desktop appraisals may not meet FHA, VA or USDA lending guidelines.
Not Suitable for Complex Properties: Homes with unusual features, major upgrades or located in volatile markets may require more detailed, in-person evaluation.
Regulatory Compliance: Appraisers must ensure that their desktop appraisal complies with USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice), including proper disclosures, data verification and scope of work documentation.
Desktop Appraisal Forms and Tools
To conduct a desktop appraisal, professionals typically use specific appraisal forms. The most common is Form 1004 Desktop, a variant of the Uniform Residential Appraisal Report. In some cases, a Form 70D may be used when fewer reporting requirements apply.
Appraisers may also rely on automated systems such as:
Fannie Mae's Desktop Underwriter® (DU)
Freddie Mac's Loan Product Advisor®
These systems assist underwriters in evaluating credit risk and qualifying borrowers efficiently, using data such as credit scores, income, assets and appraisal results.
Who Can Perform Desktop Appraisals?
Licensed or certified appraisers are the only professionals authorized to perform a desktop appraisal. However, appraiser trainees can complete them under direct supervision, making it a good training tool.
Importantly, the appraiser should have prior experience in the subject’s market area to ensure accurate interpretations of local market conditions.
How to Prepare for a Desktop Appraisal
If you’re involved in a transaction where a desktop appraisal might be used, here are a few steps to ensure a smooth process:
Provide Updated Property Information: Share recent renovation details, photos or available floor plans.
Ensure Public Records Are Correct: Verify that tax records and MLS listings accurately reflect the property’s square footage, lot size, and features.
Be Aware of Eligibility Requirements: Understand that not all properties qualify for desktop appraisals.
Understand the Timeline: While faster than traditional appraisals, the timeline still depends on data availability and the appraiser's schedule.
The Future of Desktop Appraisals
As digital solutions continue to reshape real estate, desktop appraisals are expected to play a larger role, particularly in:
Pandemic or disaster response situations
High-volume markets
Remote property evaluations
Green-lighting fast closings in competitive markets
Government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have already tested the risk performance of desktop appraisals and found them comparable to traditional ones in certain scenarios. As tools and datasets become more robust, expect desktop appraisals to become even more common in mortgage lending.
Final Thoughts
Desktop appraisals are a sign of the digital transformation sweeping across the real estate industry. They offer speed, cost savings and convenience- but they aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution. By understanding how they work, when they’re used, and what their strengths and limitations are, both lenders and borrowers can make informed decisions about property valuation.

Chicago Real Estate Market: Trends, Opportunities, and What to Expect in 2025
Managing a business involves more than just delivering excellent products and services. Financial management plays a critical role in the success of any business. For many business owners in North Carolina, bookkeeping can become an overwhelming task that diverts attention from core operations. However, outsourcing bookkeeping services can streamline financial processes, save valuable time, and lead to significant cost savings.
Here's a closer look at how professional bookkeeping services can optimize financial management.
Time Savings: Focus on What Matters
Every business owner understands the importance of time, and bookkeeping tasks can quickly take up valuable hours that could be better spent on growing the business. Managing financial records, categorizing transactions, and reconciling accounts can be complicated and tedious. Outsourcing these tasks to experienced bookkeepers frees up time to focus on strategic goals, customer relations, and other business operations.
By trusting experts with financial duties, owners ensure that these tasks are handled efficiently and accurately. Bookkeepers use specialized tools to organize and maintain financial records, making the process faster and more reliable. As a result, businesses avoid spending time correcting mistakes and can rest assured that financial records are up to date.
Financial Clarity: Informed Decision-Making
Clear, accurate financial data is essential for making informed decisions. Without up-to-date reports, it can be challenging to understand the true state of a business's finances. Professional bookkeeping services provide valuable insights into cash flow, income, and expenses. Business owners gain a clear picture of financial health, which is vital for planning and budgeting.
Regular financial reports, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow summaries, help identify trends and highlight areas for improvement. With this knowledge, businesses can adjust strategies, identify opportunities for growth, and make smarter decisions that lead to success. Understanding the numbers simplifies the decision-making process and helps ensure long-term sustainability.
Reducing Costs: Avoiding Errors and Penalties
Handling bookkeeping independently often leads to mistakes—whether it's misclassifying an expense or missing a tax deduction. These errors can result in costly penalties, missed savings, or poor financial decisions. By working with professional bookkeepers in Chicago for real estate, businesses can reduce the risk of errors that could lead to economic setbacks.
Experienced bookkeepers ensure that taxes are filed correctly, transactions are properly recorded, and all necessary deductions are applied. This not only helps avoid penalties but also uncovers potential savings by identifying overlooked deductions or financial inefficiencies. Outsourcing bookkeeping services, therefore, saves money by preventing costly mistakes.
Streamlining Operations: Efficient Financial Management
Bookkeeping involves more than just tracking income and expenses. It also includes managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and tax filings. Keeping up with these responsibilities can become overwhelming, especially as a business grows. Professional bookkeeping services automate many of these processes, ensuring they are completed efficiently and on time.
Timely payment of invoices and the smooth processing of payroll help businesses maintain strong relationships with vendors and employees. At the same time, timely billing and collections keep cash flow consistent. By handling these essential tasks, bookkeeping services allow business owners to focus on other aspects of their operations, while the financial side of the business remains in capable hands.
Scalability: Adapting to Business Growth
As businesses grow, so do their financial complexities. Whether it's increasing revenue, adding new employees, or expanding to new markets, the need for more detailed financial management arises. Professional bookkeeping services can scale with a business, providing tailored solutions as needs evolve.
Outsourcing bookkeeping allows businesses to avoid the cost and hassle of hiring additional in-house staff or purchasing expensive software. Bookkeepers can adjust their services to accommodate changing demands, whether it's managing more transactions or overseeing more complex accounting tasks. This scalability ensures that businesses are equipped to handle growth without compromising on financial accuracy.
Data Protection: Safeguarding Financial Information
When it comes to financial data, security is critical. Storing sensitive business information—such as revenue details, tax filings, and payroll records—requires a high level of protection. Professional bookkeeping services use secure systems to ensure that financial records are safely stored and only accessible to authorized personnel.
By employing encryption and secure cloud storage, bookkeepers safeguard against data breaches and fraud. Additionally, regular reconciliations and audits help detect any discrepancies or signs of fraudulent activity, providing an extra layer of protection for the business's financial assets.
Conclusion: Why Bookkeeping Services Are an Investment
Outsourcing bookkeeping may seem like an added expense, but it's an investment that yields significant returns. By entrusting financial management to experts, business owners save valuable time, reduce the risk of costly errors, and gain valuable insights into their financial health. From improving cash flow management to identifying areas for cost savings, professional bookkeeping services help businesses optimize operations and increase profitability.
For businesses in North Carolina, professional bookkeeping is not just a convenience—it's a strategic asset that ensures financial processes are efficient, accurate, and secure. By freeing up time and minimizing costs, bookkeeping services allow businesses to focus on what matters most: achieving long-term success and growth.
