the slope of my nose, the bump protruding out

petite lips with a sharp upper middle cut

big brown eyes that admires the world on

mahogany like skin that glints bronze in the sun

my family told me that I looked like my favorite aunt

and that meant more than any compliment a boy has ever said 

to any girl like a clean cut doll

my mother said my nose was like my grandfather’s when he was young

When he lived in Pakistan and spoke in my omitted mother tongue

i wish he were still sitting on that sofa and i was still his young innocent granddaughter  

but now my mind is gaunt and he’s buried six feet under

green and white were my soil

but I’ve been poisoned with weeds of red white and blue

I won’t let those colors destroy my family’s faces too
