Day 42

Colors! THEY RETURN! This one was inspired by two things.

Thing number one, I really, really, REALLY, REALLY do not like Mikan’s Anniversary Outfit. Junko's? Amazing. Mikan’s? It fills me with unbearable sorrow, why did they do that to her. I generally try to live a life of positivity instead of bitching 24/7. I’ve had people assume that I just like everything, however I do feel hatred, I just choose to not make that everyone else’s issue. That said, I cannot pretend that looking at this outfit on Mikan makes me very mad.

So I tried my own take. Admittedly feels too simplistic compared to some of the other designs, however I still feel happy with it. The primary inspiration was Mikan’s own hair along with her bandages. A dress that wraps around her, all purple of course, throw in some jewelry and my desperate attempt at fancy shoes, and you’ve got a cute Mikan dress.

The other inspiration for this is another VanadisValentine Fic! It’s been awhile since I shilled for her work.

The Marvelous Makeover of Mikan Tsumiki

An absolute classic of Soft Junkan, in my definitely unbiased opinion at least. I didn’t go the whole way giving Mikan a haircut or makeup and all that jazz, I simply wanted to put her in a nice dress courtesy of Junko. But the vibe was definitely inspired by that fic rest assured.

Another fun fact, well not really fun. This is another pic I edited after the fact, not for colors, I did in fact color this from the getgo. However when looking back on this art I really did not like how i drew Junko. I made her chin look fucking awful. So I edited it to make it actually look nice. So now the only way to see that original version is through a (of all things) Jujutsu Kaisen meme video made by a friend of mine, EpicLinkSam (enjoy that completely dead tumblr account link). Below is the video, and further below is the individual images making the bulk of the vid.

My mood in the recent months keeps going from bad to worse. Today I randomly fell into the rabbit hole of checking out other patreon artists, which always grounds me in reality and cheers me up, perhaps in a weird way. Essay incoming \o/

Authenticity is a blob of a word that sounds almost pretentious nowadays. It gets sneered at. You either sell your soul, or you don't earn with your art.

What's authentic, being true to yourself, will vary from person to person. It's like a sliding scale of suffering that you will tolerate in exchange for a coin, while convincing yourself that you have fun.

The harsh truth of modern world is that if your art pays for your living, you've already reached success, no matter how you may feel about the type of content you actually make for that money. Marrying passion and profession is virtually impossible, yet I'm doing it, only thanks to your support. I'm acutely aware that, even as I choose to be "real" and talk about an artist's money-making in a raw way, it's still patreon talk, and yes, I'll plug the link as well, so technically this entire post is an ad *fingerguns*

I just feel so privileged being able to create whatever the fuck I want, literally, I take no comms/requests/guidance on what and how should I draw/write, I post experimental, sometimes provocative stuff, and still make enough to survive. This sole fact should get me through the day, whatever other struggles I may be facing currently (I am. I don't wanna talk about it rn, instead I distract myself with this text), I should always remember the unique place in life I managed to carve for myself.

There are madmen (gender-neutral) who toss $10-20 at me every month. The majority "only" pledges $1, the notorious tier that gets treated as a tip jar with no rewards by many other creators. All of my rewards are the same at $1 and $20 (save for the one-time digital artbook download at $10, just to be perfectly clear), it's a conscious choice and a risk I continue taking because it's how I am. I used to split rewards between tiers in the past, before xiv, and it was a lot of busy work while it made me treat my art less as art and more as product. This pic goes into the cheap box, this pic goes into the expensive box. Every month. It's. Definitely not for every artist.

Logistic hell of splitting and delivering rewards, different posts with less comments per post, also my discord roles/channels would have to be split, nowadays it's just patron, whether you give me $1 or $20, there's no visual disparity, you're hanging out in the same cool kids' club, and collectively making happy noises on Fragments Fridays.

Could I be making more money if I got rid of the $1 tier? Yeah. But, mercifully, after 2 years I don't need to. I legit make enough currently, my only worry is to keep what I have. Patrons don't stay forever, 2-5 people would leave every month, about the same number would join (hence my patreon ads, I need to keep people reminded of it, even if it makes me feel guilty every damn time). I did Research (tm) in the past to find out that my "bleeding" numbers are below average, i.e. it's good, people generally tend to stick around.

I put a lot of emphasis on the $1 because I'm kinda proud of what I managed to accomplish while staying self-detrimentally humble. Literally doing an impossible thing in a world that keeps burning down. So yeah if you've been feeling bad for only giving me $1, what matters is that there's enough $1s to make a difference. Together you're creating a phenomenon, and you should be proud.

There are many stupid little principles, hills that I'll die on, that make up my authenticity. I chose to speak of it here and now in order to sorta sell myself, so it feels hypocritical x'D But if I don't shine a spotlight on this, who will. I'm old and jaded and increasingly terrified of how insincere the internet's becoming. Everything's fake, sugarcoated, polished for sale. My art's always been a scream of defiance against all that, now that I'm more or less established, I wanna scream louder. Thanks for hearing my screams. You can scream with me too if you want.

ok so there's actually a story behind the last song i listend to: earlier i was revising some stuff we did in my thai class before christmas (bc our new course is starting tomorrow) and one of the words was "earthquake" and i saw the thai word written down in my notes and somehow i heard the word as a melody in my brain?? instead of my normal reading voice?? and so i went to look up the song and sure enough the word is there

🍄 - How did you get your system name?

Okay so technically a friend of ours thought of it.

But:

We've since extrapolated meaning from it that I will now share with you all.

For a little context: we grew up with musical theatre. We were majoring in it at university. And singing has always been important in our life. So in a general sense, we knew it had to be something surrounding that. Anyway,

I can't find it but we wrote a whole thing once about how

the concept of a songbook is a collection of a performer's go-to songs for auditions and such, and how some they may know much better than others, but they're all meaningful in some way to the performer, and each song helps showcase a different aspect of that person's abilities, and shows what they value and the versatility of the person. A performer will often take out old songs that no longer fit or serve them, and add new songs that they've only recently learned, but every song was once a part of the book. And I feel the same way about our system. We're all songs in the Songbook, and some of us are very new, and some of us have seen our worst and best moments. But we're all part of the same book, and we're all important for our own reasons.

That, and we've actually met and/or gotten to know a lot of headmates through singing.

While we were at school, we used to lock ourself in a practice room in the music building and do karaoke by ourself.

Specific songs had meaning/hit hard for some headmates, who would either have picked the song for that purpose, or have come to front during the song without even realizing. It's such a surreal experience.

🍐 - Are there any nonhuman headmates (in the system)?

Yes! Several! That number actually used to be much higher.

We've got a couple vampires, a couple werewolves, a couple introjects of dnd/LARP characters that are very unique (mostly elves but also some more obscure races). Uuummm... We have various magic users? Not sure if that counts... Some fae-adjacent people. A couple pure animals (A cat, a wolf, and a bird), a demon, a couple Time Lords, aaaaand whatever the hell Yakko Warner is.

A number of us/our headmates have personal Spotify playlists and/or Pinterest boards. And I would absolutely love to link them for you if you want.

Also! We made a Google Slide Presentation about each of the headmates our friends were likely to meet!

Each headmate has 4 slides.

An Introductory Slide, containing basic information like name/pronouns as well as a little blurb about who they are/what they're like, and other info like system role, indicators when fronting, and likes and dislikes (sometimes containing positive/negative triggers).

A "faceclaim" Slide (we don't usually use the word faceclaim), which is covered in mostly Picrews or personal art of the headmate, to get a sense of what they look like.

An Aesthetics Slide, compiling a lot of stuff from their Pinterest board if they have one. Outfits and aesthetics indicative of their color pallete, Pinterest quotes, things of that nature.

Aaand a Miscellaneous Slide! Most of these are just a bunch of tumblr posts that "fit the vibe". Also other various memes, or pics dreamed "not sophisticated enough" for the Aesthetics Slide.

Another key feature of these slides is that everyone's slides are their favorite color, and the Introductory Slide is typed out in a font that either matches their vibes or is similar to their handwriting.

first, those arts are fucking GORJUS my sweettums. as someone who has lost the ability to draw, that is beautiful. i used to think of becoming a free style painter or to learn how to draw digital but somewhere along the way i just gave up and decided to simply settle on writing instead. even now, when i see art tiktok or recommendations of compilation videos on yt, i feel a bit of an ache in my chest. its just there, y’know?

second, i think you should do for it. maybe try opening up an account on a platform ur incredibly familiar with. perhaps tumblr? or even ig? or even tiktok works too! just any platform you feel safe and comfortable and know how to navigate is good.

and yeah, i can def say felt to the “it will make my mental health worse if i only get 2 likes or smt” bc same same same. i try to write good and capture the characters’ personality correctly while keeping the fic ‘alive’ only to end up with like,,,, hundreds of likes but no feedbacks or reposts or smt LMAOOO

as for a single tip i would give is to expect everything. not everyones going to like ur content and they will suddenly crash into ur inbox talking abt how they hated this fic or smt of yrs bc it was disgusting or not their thing. that has happened to me like,,,, 3 times???? i think?????? and and!!! be sure to do a bit of research beforehand, me thinks. see what kind of attention you would get when u start to post on ur page or account.

actually, i'd forgotten something recently relevant which is that back when i had v little following, i'd created n posted the following edit of a familiar meme:

it's just a meme right? anybody can do that. effectively anyone who can access the meme can easily edit out some words like i did. okay, so then fucking do it, bc taking the work of someone that u obviously must think is worth sharing n then euploading it to take the credit/notes instead of sharing from the blog that brought it to the community is disgusting imo.

so i left a p tame comment n offered them the gimp files too and included a link to the original. given how established that blogger was, i expected at least some response, whether it be an apology or deflection or smth else, but i never got one.

however, i'm remembering now that the blogger i'm talking abt happens to be close w at least one of the ppl who's been distorting as well as talking straight bullshit abt me :)

Why do you want to learn Finnish?

In all honesty, i dont really know.

Yes, i like the way it sounds, and I like some music and games from finland. But thats true of a lot of other countries and languages. So the question is why finnish, and the answer is probably the invisible pull of the universe or whatever lol

What are your goals?

Im really just doing this for fun, and so goals really feel hard to set. For now i just want to be able to follow along to music or the radio talkshows, then I'll know I'm on the right track.

My goals will chabge as my skill improves, and through learning the language i do expect to learn at least some of the culture, and I'm sure I'll have new speaking goals when i have new things to learn.

What are your learning methods?

I currently use a mix.

Some apps, some books, some radio and tv shows for casual listening, and some youtube videos (both explicitly teaching and some casual), and some fun activities like wordseach puzzles. I have ADHD so i need a wide variety of options so my stupid brain doesnt get bored too easily.

What role does this blog play?

This is where i Yap.

I'll make posts about what im learning, screenshots, funny stuff and memes (hopefully), music I maybe like, maybe doodles idk. Mostly though, a way to share my progress and take pics of my notebook or whatever to prove to myself im doing something. You know the difference between putting shit out there and not taking up any space at all is huge.

I have another account on a different website where i only follow feeds in finnish and will challenge myself to only use finnish on that website. At some point maybe I'll link these two spaces, but not now.

Are you planning to move to Finland?

Probably not, tbh. I'm proud of the land I live in despite the goverment here, and moving countries will not solve my problems. I'll visit someday, for sure. But who knows what the future really holds for me, I kind of just float through life and let it take me wherever it's going to take me.

Why did you specify "great lakes basin" but not state?

Because there's absolutely a unique culture that is in this specific area. If you live here and know enough about the surrounding area and other parts of the country, you know it too. It's more specific than a city or town but more specific than the state imo. And to be fair, people have been making their own definitions of culture and its borders that only have meaning to them for forever. This is what I feel is important to me and what I want to colour people's perception of me.
