Top 34 Yuri Anime

From mid-February to mid-March Akiba held a poll asking viewers what their favorite anime series were. Over 50,000 votes were counted and in the end, they organized the 34 entries by votes to declare which series was the most popular. While not including every yuri series, these titles do vary wildly from pulse-pounding action to salacious dramas and subtext filled slice of life shows. Of course, the eternal problem with popularity polls is that they only show what is, well... popular. So I have decided to organize the same 34 series into my own list, based on a mixture person preference, influence, and historical importance to the genre. Note that this list is not exhaustive, as there are more than just these 34 Here we go!

34. Kuttsukiboshi – No surprise here. While impressive from a technical standpoint, as this two episode series was written, directed, and animated by one may, Nayoya Ishikawa, this impressive feat does nothing to sate the deep loathing I have for Kuttsukiboshi. I found it not only nonsensical but disgusting and offensive at almost every turn.

33. Maria Holic – Ok this one has some funny moments and a solid opening theme but mostly it is about a cross-dressing sadist abusing the hell out of one of the cringiest characters ever written.

32. Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid – ew

31. Seraphim Call – Certainly not the worst but age really took a toll on this anime. It is entirely lost to history, only obtaining 12 votes in the original poll.

30. Love To-LIE-Angle - FANTASTIC TITLE, gross series that was forgotten before it even finished

29. Kurau: Phantom Memory – whut

28. Hidamari Sketch – How did this below average series get as many anime adaptations as it did?

27. Candy Boy – 2007 - 2009 was weird. I actually like parts of this one, as it is really cute, but you have to turn your brain off because full out incest. I have not heard about this one since 2009 and that seems to be cool with everyone involved.

26. The Girl in Twilight – I had never heard of this before doing this piece, which says a lot about this anime’s cultural importance. But it is a good watch.

25. El Cazador de la Bruja – worth one good watch and that’s about it.

24. My-HiME – Raise your hand if you have heard of this one. That is what I thought, and yet it is #13 on the original list.

23. Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn – There is no real place to put this one and that says more about it than I ever could.

22. Blue Drop – Weird show, you should watch it, but not memorable

21. Simoun – This one is actually a sort of hidden gem but it is lost to history for most people.

20. Destiny of the Shrine Maiden – It baffles me how this mostly mediocre mecha series was so popular. That being said, the ending of episode 11 is some of my favorite directing ever.

19. Saki – Ya know, you never hear about this one but it is actually one of the most popular, and was #6 in the poll. It is basically a mahjong sports style anime so I have no idea how it is so popular but hey, lots of people swear by it. The ultimate you “love it or hate it” show for a lot of people strangely as well.

18. Netsuzou Trap -NTR – I held off as long as I could. While really popular I cannot stand this anime, my loathing of it is rivaled only by Kuttsukiboshi.

17. Sasameki Koto – A pretty well-known yuri series. The books are FAR better, but still an enjoyable watch beloved by many yuri fans.

16. Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san – It pains me to not be able to place this one higher, as it is one of my favorites and so hilarious, but overall there are other series that just deserve to be above it.

15. Konohana Kitan – Adorable, just adorable.

14. Black Rock Shooter – It's astonishing that an (admittedly awesome) character design can spawn multiple anime adaptations, a hit song, and its own franchise. The anime adaptation packs some good old-fashion emotional suffering and cool fights but nothing really beyond that.

13. Strike Witches – Far more popular and influential than it has any right to be. One of the most salacious shows on this list I always feel uncomfortable watching it but I do love the characters.

12. Yuri Kuma Arashi – The creators behind this were clearly not sober and probably could have used a cold shower for other reasons as well, but it is an INCREDIBLE anime with some of the best, although extraordinarily odd, writing.

11. Liz and the Blue Bird – Things are starting to get a bit difficult now, this one is actually hard to place. Being only a year old we are not sure of the impact it has but the movie is beautiful and stunning with some really bad pacing.

10. Sakura Trick – Full of fluffy fanservice, and pretty popular. This is one that almost every yuri fan will enjoy.

9. Maria Watches Over Us – The show that revived the sister-love story, a lot of the most popular yuri would not exist if not for this gentle diamond.

8. Yuruyuri – A yuri somehow becomes one of the best slice of life series of all time. Its fame is well deserved, as the memorable characters and dynamics can be enjoyed for many, many viewings.

7. Bloom Into You – What started as a run of the mill yuri series became one of the most well-loved. One of the biggest anime of last year and a darn good yuri to boot. I wonder how we will look back on this one a decade later.

6. Citrus – DEAR GOD. I know how controversial this series is for many people and that some of you want to grab pitchforks right about now in response to me placing this high on the list but hear me out. Whatever your feelings about Citrus, and there is plenty of valid criticism to make, it is a very influential and popular anime. It scored the top spot on Akiba’s list by over 5000 votes. For me, it holds a special spot as the first real review I ever wrote (thank you, Erica, for the opportunity).

5. Sweet Blue Flowers – We are in the top five now, yet I still feel that I have placed this series far too low. It is one of the most grounded yuri series and ten years later its impact on the genre is still clear.

4. Strawberry Panic! – This was my first yuri and will always be special to me for this. But, there is no doubt that this series is actually worse than a lot of the ones lower than it on this list. I can almost feel the seething rage directed towards me for placing what can realistically be described as an aging, parodied, melodrama so high.Yet, as I gaze through my strawberry colored glasses, I see that Strawberry Panic has a magic to it. For so many in the American community, it holds a special place and I have heard my story with it reflected so often that I just started writing it on a speech bubble on the inside of the glasses I wear at conventions so that I know what people are saying to me when my mind wanders off. There is a reason it is nicknamed the gateway of yuri.

3. Kase-san and Morning Glories – A simply stunning, beautiful, and realistic story, this OVA movie is unlike any yuri before it. It holds nothing back in its yuri in its realistic depiction of a lesbian relationship. Kase-san is the best anime to come from twenty-gay-teen it just might change the genre forever.

2. Puella Magi Madoka Magica – Speaking of changing a genre, PMMM, my favorite anime of all time, did something truly incredible. Not since sailor moon as such a social phenomenon sprung from a magical girl series. The perfect writing, postmodern use of tropes, philosophy, and just pure awe-inspiring nature of the show has not been forgotten years later. The legacy of such a widely celebrated series is nothing short of god-like.

1. Revolutionary Girl Utena – Was there ever really any doubt? This series defined what yuri is for a generation. It is one of the defining works of LGBT and feminist media and possibly one of the most important pieces to come out of 90′s anime. Yuri, as we know it may not exist, were it not for this legendary series.

Well, that was fun but exhausting. Of course, this list is not perfect and I am sure that you more than disagree with me in a few places and I would love to hear them. An Untitled Document (Roman Angst Oneshot)

Roman groaned as he tapped his fingers against the keyboard of his laptop. The sunlight streaming in through the window left a blinding white glare on the upper half of the screen, but he didn’t quite care enough to be bothered getting up and closing the curtain. He instead angled it down, sinking lower into the wooden dining chair. His back would surely complain later, but a shower would probably fix any aches or pains from the awkward position.

He wondered if he should get up and walk around for a bit, stretch his legs and give himself a break from his (apparently fruitless) efforts to work. But, then again, it seemed wrong to give himself a break when he hadn’t really done anything.

He had eaten breakfast- if cold leftover pizza and too-strong coffee counted as breakfast- and fed his pets. He’d even played with the cats for a while, and that had left a fleeting smile on his face as he sat down at the dining table with another cup of coffee and a bottle of soda to sip at while he worked.

The last dregs of coffee sat untouched in the cup, now cold and cloudy, while the soda was half-gone already. His teeth felt rough and slimy, coated in the absurd amounts of sugar from the unhealthy drink. The document on screen hadn’t changed since he sat down an hour and a half ago, the cursor blinking and taunting him. Sure, he’d written and rewritten and deleted a few hundred words, but nothing he’d written seemed good enough.

Writing was supposed to be his passion, the thing he could still grab and hold close to his chest when things got rough. It was all he had left at this point. He couldn’t dance anymore, not with the weak knees he’d inherited from his mother, and his own growing ankle issues from several years of working on his feet for whole days with no breaks. He couldn’t remember the last time he performed a song or in a play, the foggy memories of hot stage lights and elaborate costumes and giggling, whispered conversations in dressing rooms now leaving a bitter taste in his mouth. Drawing and painting was an option, still, but they were never really his, not after the ridicule he’d received through highschool from one particularly sharp-tongued art teacher.

Roman’s stomach growled, and he grimaced, glancing at the clock. Only eleven o’clock. He couldn’t eat until one, at the very least. He couldn’t let himself slip into comfort eating again, not when he still had a generously padded belly, not when flab swung off the bottom of his arms, not when his back fat poked unattractively out of the bottom of his binder, not when-

He shook his head, as if to clear it like one of the Etch A Sketch boards his nephew loved. He was in a bad enough headspace right now without spiralling down into a dysphoric, self-body-hating hellscape.

He instead turned his attention back to his phone, which sat on the table between him and his laptop, and continued scrolling blankly through social media. Memes and posts and videos flashed past his eyes, some of them drawing a faint smirk or an amused huff. He sent a few to Dee. He was well aware that his fiance was at work, but some of them would hopefully give him a smile when he went on break later.

He set his phone down again and took an absentminded swig from the bottle of soda. He winced as it grated against his teeth, the sugar almost hurting his teeth as it swirled down his throat. He ran his tongue over his teeth, prodding at them gently. He hissed sharply as he got to the loose one at the bottom of his mouth. Adults probably weren’t meant to have loose teeth, he thought to himself. He probably needed to see a dentist. When he could afford it. If he could afford it.

11:11am. Roman spent a few seconds trying to think of a wish, but before his mind could grasp a solid thought, the clock ticked over, and the moment was gone. It was all rubbish, anyway. Wishes didn’t come true, and life was cruel to those who didn’t deserve it. Dee was one of the best people he’d ever met, and certainly his favourite, yet he was a ball of anxiety and guilt complexes. He deserved to feel confident about himself, to love his laugh and his soft tummy and his small stature that put him at the perfect height for cuddling, to love his loud way of speaking and his passion for those he cared about. Roman certainly loved them, more than words could say.

He was jolted from his thoughts by his phone buzzing with a message from Dee. He must have been on break already. Roman had yet to pin down the break times scattered throughout his shift, so he never knew exactly when his beloved would be online during the day.

That was a complete lie, but Roman couldn’t quite face telling Dee he hadn’t touched the chores they discussed last night. He fully intended to do them before Dee got home, that was for certain! Just... not right now.

Roman let out a soft whine. He’d honestly been hoping that he would get a job request for the weekend, between rough finances and missing his older brother. Logan seemed happy to let them stay at his and Virgil’s house over the weekend when Roman was working, though that was likely because Roman was working for Virgil.

At least Dee usually didn’t seem to mind hanging out at their place while Roman was working. He spent most of his time with Logan and Virgil’s three year old son, Patton. Patton, for his part, adored Dee as if he’d hung the moon and stars in the sky with his own hand. It was cute to see, even if a tiny part of Roman stung with jealousy over being replaced as Patton’s favourite. He genuinely did love seeing the two of them cuddled up on the couch together, playing with toys or watching TV or talking.

It made him excited for the idea of having children, in all honesty. Dee had made his desire to one day have kids clear pretty early on, and Roman had to say he agreed. For a long time, he hated the idea of having children- mostly because he didn’t want to be pregnant, the very idea of it set off his dysphoria like an alarm bell- but he didn’t mind the idea of raising a child with Dee.

Speaking of... he turned back to the computer, squinting at the bright white screen. It was meant to be a story about adoption and found families and unconditional love and hope, but... he just couldn’t get it to click. No matter what he wrote, the tone didn’t feel right for what he was trying to hit. It was just... Wrong, and he hated himself for it.

Writing was meant to be the one thing. His thing. But it just wouldn’t flow, no matter how hard he tried, or what tips and tricks he tested out, or how many breaks he took, or what projects he tried to work on. He loved these stories and characters with his whole heart, and he knew people would be interested in this story- after all, he’d gotten a great reception from the first installment in his planned series. He could talk about them for hours, gush about his plans and ideas and characters, but when it came to actually writing them?

Not a chance.

His heart ached. He felt like he was spinning in the same circles as he had been for months. New house, an (ex boyfriend) friend turned vaguely irritating housemate, new pets, a possible new job that would pay well but he was certain he would loathe- despite Dee’s company during breaks- all of these changes were throwing him off rhythm, and while he was sure that they were for the best, and long term, they would help him live a Happy Life, it was upsetting.

A small, shameful part of him wanted to go home. Not home back to the shared house he had been miserable in, despite only living there for a few short months, not home back to Logan and Virgil’s house, but back to the house he grew up in. It was filthy and toxic, and the people there weren’t much better, but it was familiar. It was regular. He knew how to navigate the treacherous landscape of rotting food left piled in the kitchen, of insults screamed over minute irritations, of the stench from medical issues improperly treated, of prescription medications abused and leaving the mother who was meant to protect him in a drug induced haze, of his father bellowing and throwing things and breaking precious objects and walls (and, in some terrifying cases, people), of the two middle brothers fighting and not understanding why it upset him so. He knew how to try and keep the peace, and how to cope when he failed, as was so often the case in that household. He knew who to talk to and who to avoid in that neighborhood, who to run to if he got in a fight, who to stand up against and who to back down from. The scars from knife wounds in his youth had taught him lessons more valuable than his rundown school ever had.

He didn’t realise that he was crying until a fat tear plopped onto the dining table, narrowly missing his phone screen. He hated that he missed it. He hated that he missed his father, despite swearing off contact with him after coming away from their last conversation with a black eye. He hated that both he and Logan were deliberately keeping their mother at arm’s length, trying to save themselves from the pain of her likely-approaching death. He hated that his other brothers were good people, people he loved, and he couldn’t even go near them anymore out of fear for their parents.

Roman glanced at the clock blinking in the lower corner of his computer screen. An hour and a half had passed since Dee had messaged him, and he hadn’t moved from his slouched position at the dining table. He probably had roughly three hours to do everything else he needed to do before Dee got home. That should be plenty of time. Should be.

He noticed numbly that he hadn’t yet changed out of his pyjamas, just thrown on the cat hoodie he’d bought at a convention a few years ago to show it to the kittens and see if they would cuddle up in the large pocket on the front. He probably needed to shower, as well. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d bathed.

... Well, that wasn’t entirely accurate. He knew he’d had a bath at least semi-recently, because he remembered using one of the bath bombs that he and Dee had gotten at the pharmacy near Logan’s house the other weekend.

He twisted a finger into his hair, pulling his fringe down over his eyes to inspect it. It didn’t feel too greasy, and it looked fine. He was probably fine. Though he should at least wash his face, to deal with his blotchy cheeks and red eyes, if nothing else. Maybe slap on some makeup and go for a walk in the pleasant weather outside. Take the dog with him, wander around town a bit.

As he stared out the window at Dee’s dog, who was sprinting wildly up and down her tether, probably chasing some bug or lizard, he felt his heart sink. He knew he wasn’t going to do any of that. Pipe dreams for someone with far more energy and functionality than he possessed lately.

So, instead, trying his best to ignore the looming sense of dread he felt, and the anxiety he could feel building over Dee’s return and subsequent disappointment over his lack of productivity, he turned his still tear-blurred gaze back to the too-bright screen of the laptop, readied his fingers over the keyboard, and attempted once again to write.

Beware long post below. Just some thoughts I had whilst I was re-reading twilight...... 

1) Sarcastic Bella is love. Sarcastic Bella is life. 2)  No one can take away my headcanon black!Emmett with gorgeous tightly curled hair. Plus this means that he can totally teach Jasper about racism and why fighting for the Confederates was WRONG and they can support anti-racism charities together.  3) Jess’s little comment about Esme not being able to have children makes me so sad. 4) Ok, so Carlisle is a freaking surgeon. Like he spends his days elbows deep in people’s abdominal cavities. I have even more respect for him now if that’s possible.  5) Charlie’s lil crush on the Cullens is tots cute.  6) Wasted vampire trope #1 - the base instinctual fear that all human characters have around vampires, even though they can’t understand it.  7) Apparently Alice doesn’t give a shit about appearing human 8) Cute sibling moments-why didn’t we get these in the films? 9) What was the whole ‘electric current’ sensation that passed between Edward and Bella in science class? Is that ever explained? Do vampires conduct electricity now?  10) God damn it Charlie Swan, stop being precious. Also the fact Bella gets so choked up about her dad putting snow chains on her truck makes me so sad. Poor girl. 

11) “No blood, no foul.” Not even trying to subtle are you Edward.  12) “...the doctor was in on it.” Literally almost fell over laughing. Poor darling Carlisle.  13) God, I forget all the angry scowling and even angrier silences.  14) I fucking love Bella’s petty inner monologue about rear-ending Ed’s volvo. Girl after my own heart.  15) Sam Uley-totally forgot he was only 19!  20) So Carlisle has been coming to forks for centuries. Even before the first settlers reached there. Interesting little fact nugget.  21) Angela is GAY! FFS Smeyer.  22) Bella’s equally petty inner monologue about non-fatally wounding Tyler so he can’t take her to the dance. This girl is a mood.  23) You know Emmett absolutely rinsed Edward about all his mooning and pining during their hunting trip. I’m talking about made up ridiculous cringe-worthy joke poetry about Bella’s eyebrows and some rather grotesque smooching faces.  24) “We all like to drive fast.” I totally headcanon that Esme is a fucking terrifying driver, after all she has shit to do-crazy vamp kids to keep in check, houses to restore, a very pretty husband to bone.  25) So much unsubtle foreshadowing. 26) “Grizzly is Emmett’s favourite.” This is 100% Emmett’s revenge on bear-kind for his almost-demise.  27) Wasted vampire trope #2 - vampires are able to communicate in tones too low and too high for humans to hear. Other animals however are a different matter. It’s not unusual for private conversation to be interrupted by baying dogs and the irritated meows of cats.  28) Why can Bella see blue veins in Edward’s arms? He doesn’t have blood? Did you even proofread this Smeyer? 29) Edward’s fears about facing Esme - I can just imagine Carlisle coming home to find Esme holding Edward there in a headlock, before looking up and saying your father’s here now, lets talk. Also poor Carlisle having to face Esme that evening and tell her Ed’s gone.  30) Wasted vampire trope #3 - the what Edward talks about his human feelings being hidden deep beneath his stronger vampire ones. I don’t feel we get to see much of this except for a few episodes of over-protectiveness and growling. This could have been much more interesting.  31) I would pay good money to hear more about Carlisle and Esme’s increasingly ridiculous and disastrous plots to try and get Edward and Rosalie together.  I mean we think of them as the wise, mature adults but we all know that the Cullen children get some of their crazy from their parents.  32) I want an AU where Alice didn’t get her visions of Jasper and the Cullens and went absolutely feral, when the Cullens do run into her it’s as an enemy who they eventually persuade to their way of life.....or not.  33) Jasper’s gift is absolutely terrifying....I mean being able to manipulate people’s emotions, get them to feel what you want and by extension behave as you want. Ed even says he can use it on a crowd. That’s like supervillain level.  34) “You are mythical after all.” Ok so now I want an extended world of fantasy/horror/mythical beings. I’m talking mermaids/sirens, fay folk, ghosts etc. Make Forks like Gravity Falls or something. Please.  35) Edward whiny bitch Cullen repeatedly asking Bella if she’s going to tell her Dad that he’s her boyfriend. And if you think he stops doing this once their married, you’re wrong.  36) Edward’s forehead kisses are tots something he learned from watching Esme and Carlisle. I will die for this headcanon.  37) Edward tasting Bella’s tears. WTF!? WHY? WHAT AM I READING SMEYER!? 38) Carlisle found a real vampire nest at 23 years of age. He is canonically too clever for his own good. FFS sweety.  39) I forgot how much I enjoyed the part with Carlisle’s backstory. Also my poor bby boy suffered through his transformation without making a single noise. Even human!Carlisle had the self control of a saint.  40) Wasted vampire trope #4 - I know this has been mentioned before but the whole, vampires don’t need to breathe and get no relief from it but do it as habit. What other human habits and sensations do they have which have been altered by their transformation. 41) Aro and Carlisle playing tricks to try and get each other to drink from the other’s food source. It didn’t work cause of vamp smell obviously. I know I write this as if it’s playful, but we all knows Aro was a total bitch about it.  42) Edwin. Charlie Swan you are precious. Never change.  43) WHY DIDN’T WE GET TO SEE ALICE AND EMMETT HOLD HANDS IN THE FILMS! 44) “Occassionally Esme would call them to order.” I would pay good money to see this. Also does ‘ that include them’ include Carlisle? 45) Edward muttering a string of swear words both old and new, in multiple languages under his breath is a mood I recognise.  46) “Esme and Carlisle, they’ll have to leave, to hide forever!”.....”We’ve been there before.” I want this and every story of all the stupid reasons why the Cullens have had to flee the state/country in the past. Carlisle sometimes wonders whether all the trouble is worth it. This never happened when he was on his own. 47) I am unsurprisingly very much in favour of growling, snarling Alice Cullen.  48) Why does Bella have a secret cash hoard?  Is that normal? Is it in case Renee’s dealers turn up demanding money? (Can you tell I’m not a Renee fan.) 49) Of course Esme installed fucking bombproof shutters on their house. My girl is so freaking extra.  50) How many speeding tickets have the Cullens collected over the years?  51) “He seems to stay just far enough away that I can’t hear what he’s thinking..” Was this just coincidence or did James somehow know about Ed’s power? 52) Alice sketches her visions sometimes - it’s something Esme taught her because sometimes her visions are so weird or disturbing or exhausting that Alice can’t voice them herself. So Esme came up with this way to try and help her get it out.  53) Wasted vampire trope #5 - vampires can speak so fast that humans can’t understand them. Just imagine Bella wandering in on a family discussion at the Cullen house and all she can hear is a high pitched squeaking because everyone is talking super fast.  54) Alice’s backstory makes me so sad 55) “Alice had a bit too much fun fabricating the evidence.” Ok, so two things: one, I absolutely wish we could have seen Alice destroying shit and two, I still don’t understand how they managed to convince anyone Bella fell down a flight of stairs, like did they have to push her down the stairs to ensure it looked realistic, did Ed spend ages artistically placing her in a suitable position. How did this work? 56) Also love that everyone just accepted that Bella would fall down stairs and through a window, she’s just that much of a clutz.  57) Also they stole a car and burned down a dance studio. The Cullens should have started a crime family, they wouldn’t have been good at it but it would have been hilarious.  58) Bella should have grown up with Charlie. End of. Renee sucks.  59) Charlie is absolutely crushing on Carlisle and I love it.

Nope. Since I don’t study art, I’m not currently actively trying to become better at it, all I do is doodle whatever silly idea I have at the moment without an actual clue of what I’m doing while at it and post it cause people seem to like it when I do, concrit is literally the last thing I need. By which I mean, I already know my art could be way better than it is, but getting better at it isn’t really the reason why I’m posting it. Yes and no! My fantasy drawings aren’t exactly telling a story, so I’m doing whatever with them - it’s not really headcanons, it’s just me playing around with any idea I find entertaining at the moment!! So yes, definitely, Baku and Mina as dragon shifters are still a thing I love a lot and I might draw more in the future! But that doesn’t exclude me drawing for the AU in a setting where only Kiri is a dragon either~

Sure, why not? Bakugou’s never hidden his feelings in the manga, nor has he ever felt embarrassed by them! He’s a bit awkward in showing affection I guess, but to me it feels more because he isn’t used to it than because he wants to hide it - if he were to start dating Kirishima he’d definitely have no problems with letting everyone know they’re in a relationship of that sort, I think :D well, it’s just my interpretation of it anyway haha

3: what random objects do you use to bookmark your books? post it notes, receipts, I’ve used flowers a few times, really anything that’s in reach

4: how do you take your coffee/tea? tea with a little bit of milk and honey, coffee depends on the day? typically with a lil bit of vanilla creamer. when I make my ‘fancy’ coffee at home with frothy milk on top I always top them off with a dusting of cinnamon

6: do you keep plants? ye! I have a succulent/cacti terrarium, some sunflowers, jasmine, african violets, tomato plants, hanging planters, and a few more I forget the names of!

1: How long have you been playing Slbp?

Since December of 2016, I think? Maybe late November? I remember playing it during a family trip and I was really put off due to everything looking so confusing at first.

2: What made you decide to download it?

People on Tumblr that I followed began playing about it and posting about it, so I was curious to see what the hype was all about. I had also been winded from a very, very dramatic breakup from a turbulent relationship, so I needed something to help myself get my head out of that space and move on.

3: Who’s route did you play first?

Of course… Oda Nobunaga. I don’t know if it’s because he was the first option that popped up when you get to choose or if he just looked all fiery and red, but I was into it. He turned out to easily be one of my favorites.

4: Favorite route?

God… I don’t know if I can decide between Kojuro or Nobunaga, even if I can’t remember either of their routes super well. I know everyone already talks about this, but I really liked MC in Kojuro’s route and I liked how confusing Kojuro could be at times, as well as endearing. I haven’t played all the routes so maybe this will change, but Kojuro and his whole “precious girl” and the whole plot seemed really interesting.

5: Least favorite route?

I’m not sure if I have one yet, and again I haven’t played all of them yet, but all I know is that Shingen’s route didn’t particularly leave much of an impression on me, but I really did enjoy his divine ending and it moved me a lot. His route itself however, just didn’t seem to leave much of a mark on me.

6: Favorite lord?

For overall, Kojuro. He’s steadfast and charming and everything I know I’d want for myself if that kind of person really existed. He’s my dreamboat boy, and I like his messy room and his Bontenmaru obsession. I think his relationship with the MC is the most evolved out of them all, and is really cute and mature and understanding. Also, jealous Kojuro makes me want to kiss his face all over.

7: Least favorite lord?

I can’t… I don’t have one… I love them all…

8: Favorite female character?

Umeko. I’d go gay for her. I haven’t played Saizo’s route yet but his sister? Sheeeeesh. She is so fine.

9: Favorite retainer?

Toramatsu Toramatsu Toramatsu Toramatsu. He is my small boyfriend and he looks so cute… I need his route. He just seems so right for MC and I mean it may not be the most dramatic route, but it would sure be a damn cute one. Plus, the way his eyes light up in battle makes me giggle. He’s so cute, who could say no to that brown hair and brown eyes?!

10: Favorite side character? 

I didn’t want to say Toramatsu because I already said Toramatsu, but Toramatsu. Let me be with my boyfriend.

11: Best villain?

Nobunaga in Shingen’s route. I’ve seen previews of Ieyasu as a villain as well but I really like Nobunaga as a villain because I’ve seen it myself. He’s a powerful one and he’s ruthless, and I love me some villains. He’s driven, and even Shingen notes that he acts as if he needs to take the world on his shoulders. He’s a villain with purpose, not just a cardboard cutout villain who’s got no real purpose. Nobunaga in Shingen’s route makes me so damn happy, especially when he says that line about him being the only one who can achieve unification. He’s got a reason for being the villain and he knows it, and Shingen’s death wasn’t just because Nobunaga was dicking around and decided to play with the Tiger for the shits and giggles. 

12: Worst Villain?

I can’t remember any specific villains but I hate villains who don’t have a real purpose or a shitty one that isn’t really worth all the trouble for. This reminds me of a Gillian Flynn (a favorite author of mine) quote that’s about female villains when she was talking about her novel Sharp Objects (a favorite book of mine), but I think this applies to villains in general as well.

“I particularly mourn the lack of female villains — good, potent female villains. Not ill-tempered women who scheme about landing good men and better shoes (as if we had nothing more interesting to war over), not chilly WASP mothers (emotionally distant isn’t necessarily evil), not soapy vixens (merely bitchy doesn’t qualify either). I’m talking violent, wicked women. Scary women. Don’t tell me you don’t know some.”

Actually, writing this now, I’m really thinking of Masamune’s mother in his route. She kind of bugged me, mostly because Voltage could have emphasized anything that would drive her: her loyalty to her own clan, maybe focus more so on Date Terumune’s death, her brother. Instead, they chose to make the main point of her villainess (not a word, I know) none other than the fact that she hates Masamune for having heterochromatic eyes. That, is the basis of her hatred and then Date Terumune’s death is the cherry on top. Like, really? I would’ve really wished they’d focus more on that than the preconceived notion of “Yes, she hates her son mainly because he has a blue eye.” Not the worst villain but Voltage just has poor portrayal of her.

13: Do you play the event stories?

Yes. So much. And I go for the courtier’s prize so that means drawing blood.

14: If so, who’s event story do you read the most often?

Kojuro’s and Nobunaga’s are always first if it’s available.

15: Do you buy any of the epilogues?

Only of my favorites, and if I deem them to be worth it. I have mostly Nobunaga’s.

16: How many pearls do you have as of now?

Haha, I have six. I’m crying. I spent most of it on the epilogues.

We all know Bloodborne can be a difficult fandom for OCs given the vagueness of the lore, but a lot of us still enjoy coming up with stories for our hunters. I hadn’t seen an OC meme for Bloodborne so I figured I’d make one myself!

These are all the questions I could think of without getting into the nitty gritty of the lore. Of course, all questions are optional. You can remove any question you don’t want to answer, or add questions I might’ve forgotten!

Put my response under a ReadMore because there were a lot of questions! Please know that I haven’t played Bloodborne yet so some responses may seem a little off because I’m filling in gameplay knowledge based on what I’ve experienced in Dark Souls I and the Bloodborne wiki.

Name: Antares Mai Quyen Nickname(s): Auntie (sometimes Auntie Antares when addressed by their younger charges), Mai-Mai (used only by their parents when they were young) Age: 33 Gender: Non-Binary Agender (they/them pronouns) Sexuality: No strict preference for any gender, they’re currently in a relationship with a woman Height/Build: 6′5″ and fairly thickset (muscular with some fat over everything)

Personality description:  A reserved Hunter of Hunters, though those who become close friends with Antares know they are capable of sincere affection. The hunter is usually mindful of their size, choosing to talk quietly and walk slowly so that they don’t intimidate people, but also so that they don’t constantly bump their head into ceiling stuff and startle people with their outbursts of pain. Such gentleness is something that was internalized from being raised as a girl in a Vietnamese household (speaking from personal experience as a AFAB NB Viet). Children adore Antares and Antares adores them back, always willing to give the smaller ones either some sweets or a lift onto their shoulders. Indeed, the hunter seems to have a respectable position in Yharnam. However, Antares heavily dissociates and experiences extreme self-loathing in private because they are actually an Abhorrent Beast finally corrupted by the Old Blood. More to come about those sentiments and how Antares finally (sorta) succumbed to the scourge later.

Physical description:  Like most in their covenant, Antares wears the Crowfeather set around Yharnam. A modification of the Vietnamese áo dài is worn underneath all of the set’s heavier layers for casual wear though. During the daytime, they might wear the whole Crowfeather set minus the mask and hat if the weather’s not too warm because they find the overall outfit comfortable, even though most hunters may choose to separate work from daily life so people don’t stare at them. Antares doesn’t really mind such attention because they’re used to rude oglings, having grown up as an Asian (thick black hair, light to medium brown skin, almond eyes, etc. typical of Vietnamese people) in a mostly White European place like Yharnam. The hunter probably gets more stares because they’re relatively large and androgynous so there are plenty of people curious about Antares’s “true gender.” The hunter always replies stoically to gender questions, but replies may leave people more confused because their coherence reaches the shitpost plane of existence.

BACKSTORY

Introduce your hunter and their backstory. Alright this meme got so long that I got super tired of writing responses so maybe I’ll go back and edit this post, but read this other post for some backstory in the meantime.

Which class/origin did you choose for your hunter? Does this tie into their backstory? Lone Survivor, only because I usually start off as a tank character in Dark Souls before I build up my Endurance/Stamina. This origin definitely doesn’t tie into Antares’s backstory because they aren’t from the Fishing Hamlet.

Where is your hunter from? What brought them to Yharnam? Antares was born in Yharnam, but closer to the outskirts of the city where the relatively more common class people live. Their father traveled to Byrgenwerth from Saigon to study and brought their mother to the city later while she was pregnant with Antares. So really, Antares grew up as a Milquetoast with their father eventually working in the Byrgenweth libraries and their mother working in the clinic that would someday belong to Iosefka/Imposter Iosefka.

Did your hunter know any of the characters from the game before they entered the Hunter’s Dream? Yeah, they knew Eileen the Crow and then some of the other Yharnam hunter NPCs by extension. Antares also knows of the Old Hunters, but they haven’t met them. Other NPCs they don’t really know about if they appear outside the actual city streets of Yharnam (Micolash, Yurie, the Madara twins, etc.).

Had they fought beasts before entering the Dream, or is this their first experience as a hunter? Antares has definitely fought beasts before coming to the Dream. They’re a Hunter of Hunters so they’ve killed (and eaten) a few blood-addled hunters as well. 

CHARACTER DETAILS

How do they react to first waking up in the Hunter’s Dream? Do they remember anything about their life before the Dream? Hmm… I’m not really sure how to answer this question since I haven’t played Bloodborne and therefore haven’t had much thought about the Hunter’s Dream. I personally think they would be angry that they can’t Properly Die until they discover a way to leave the Dream. Antares honestly wants to die as a (mostly) human being before they become too blood-addled and kill someone else they loved again. That being said, yes, the Hunter remembers everything about their life for sure, even once they’ve come to the Dream.

Do they align themselves with any Covenants or other factions (the Healing Church, the Choir, the Old Hunters, the Unseen Village, etc)? As previously mentioned, Antares is part of the Hunter of Hunters covenant. Other than that, they don’t really align themselves with any of the other, for lack of a better word, more political covenants in Yharnam.

Do they befriend any NPCs in particular? Make enemies of any NPCs? Haven’t really thought about this because I haven’t played Bloodborne yet. Maybe Antares would be friends with Eileen the Crow, but they might know of Gascoigne, Henryk, and Djura through them also being Eileen’s friends. Meanwhile, they probably wouldn’t really have any enemies. They’re not often aggressive towards most people, I imagine.

Are they in a relationship? If so, with whom? Yes, they’re currently in a relationship with another Bloodborne OC of mine (Miriam Hashmi, a Byrgenwerth scholar).

How does your hunter feel about the Healing Church? About blood ministration? Considering that they’re now a fucking bloodthirsty Beast (not all the time fortunately), they’re probably feeling pretty resentful about the Healing Church and how the Church has continued trying to hide the consequences of blood ministration.

Do they fear the scourge? Are they afraid of turning into a beast? Afraid of becoming blood-addled? Of the unknown Cosmos? What are they afraid of? Antares could honestly care less about the Unknown Cosmos. They tend to worry about more visceral and tangible fears such as the Scourge.  What happens to a Respected Hunter once they become an Abhorrent Beast after all? Being a Hunter of Hunters doesn’t help much and Antares’s anxieties have multiply tenfold when they realize they hunt others just like themselves. Other than being caught and outed, they also have to worry about staying alive for their friends’ sake as well as about succumbing to the corruption and killing the same friends as a blood-addled monster. Should Antares somehow have some conscience returned to them after going on a rampage, the guilt would be too much to handle. 

Does your hunter relish in the Hunt or revile their bloody work? After killing their father while being blood-addled and beastly, I think it’s safe to say that Antares very strongly reviles being a Hunter. Also, it sucks having to eat a blood-addled hunter you once considered a friend just to satisfy your own hunger.

What is your hunter’s attitude towards Gehrman? Do they resent being trapped in the Hunter’s Dream? They don’t really think much of Gehrman after getting over the initial resentment of being trapped in the Hunter’s Dream (see first question of this section for reasoning behind resentment). While perplexed by his presence and the Doll, Antares comes to respect both as the Night goes along. Because they don’t go to the Hunter’s Nightmare to fight Lady Maria, they have no reason to think more negatively of Gehrman otherwise.

Does your hunter sympathize and associate with fellow hunters, or are they more of a loner who avoids other hunters? Do they leave notes for other hunters? Antares will gladly help others in need, but rarely asks for help themselves, especially while hunting a target. The preference for solitude is not based on cockiness, but rather a desire to avoid being outed as a beast if they need to transform to fight a particularly difficult mark and feed on the remains. Messages will be left to warn other hunters to stay away from their hunting territories as a result. However, the warning will be more along the lines of “There’s going to be a dangerous blood-addled hunter here. Don’t come around until I deal with them. - Antares” rather than obviously “There’s going to be a beast a.k.a. me here. Don’t come around if you don’t like seeing excess blood and gore because I need to eat. - Antares.” There might be more messages of a more positive vibe though. Antares might leave cute little sketches for hunters-in-training to find on patrol throughout Yharnam.

Does your hunter worship the Great Ones? Do they worship blood? Or do they have a different belief system? If they’re not devout, what do they value or prioritize in life? Antares certainly has respect for the Great Ones, but they’re not particularly religious otherwise. They prioritize family and close friends more than anything (well… more like just friends at this point in their life since both of their parents have been killed so there are no other really close relatives in Yharnam).

Do they have a special place where they feel safe or “at home”? Is there a place they’re afraid of or that they avoid? Ugh, this will be incredibly sappy, but Antares feels the most at home lying down with their head on Miriam’s thighs. They love having their girlfriend (or wife by the actual game’s timeline I imagine) stroke their hair. As for a place the hunter would be afraid of, it would probably be the Hunter’s Nightmare for reasons already/to be explained. But… it might be an unavoidable fate…

Are there any particular items your hunter holds onto for sentimental reasons, or items that serve to comfort them? A jade necklace and a bracelet made of wooden beads, jewelry that were given to them by their parents when they were a child. The jewelry’s all that’s left of Antares’s happier memories from before their parents were killed.

Do any of the discoveries in the game (about the old blood, the Healing Church, the Great Ones, etc) shock them? How do they react to these revelations? Perhaps the consequences of the Old Blood not so much because Antares is already experiencing their consequences. I guess they would still be shocked by how far back and all-encompassing the Old Blood history goes in terms of the Healing Church and the Great Ones. Some stuff they would feel angry and unsettled about though, especially if they went to the Hunter’s Nightmare as someone trying to figure out what the hell is really happening in Yharnam (but that isn’t really their main questline I suppose).

Does your hunter want to discover the secrets of the Healing Church and the origins of the scourge, or do they just want to kill some beasts and escape the Dream? What motivates them? I mean, they might discover some secrets during the Night, but they ultimately just want to escape the Hunter’s Dream.  Honestly, I don’t really know how to answer this question until I actually play Bloodborne.

How does your hunter feel about being effectively immortal? How do the unending deaths affect them over the course of their time in the Dream? See previous questions about Antares’s opinions of the Dream.

COMBAT AND STATS

Which primary stat does your hunter most rely on (Strength, Skill, Bloodtinge, Arcane)? Do they prioritize Vitality or Endurance? Strength and Endurance would be emphasized, with some Skill since Antares does wield the Blades of Mercy. Vitality might also be increased once Antares becomes a beast, but they don’t often prioritize this stat otherwise.

What are your hunter’s trick weapon and firearm of choice? Why? Saw Cleaver and Hunter’s Pistol are the usual combo. However, Antares can also wield the Blades of Mercy if they’re fighting a more skilled enemy such as a blood-addled hunter versus a crowd of corrupted beasts.

Do they make use of any hunter tools? Only the Old Hunter’s Bone for Quickening and the Beast Roar for keeping enemies back so that they can transform if needed.

What type of armor do they wear? Why? Usually the Crowfeather Set for style points. Otherwise, whatever has high defense against mostly physical slash/bite/etc. attacks to make up for the lack in emphasis on Vitality.

Describe their fighting style. Antares is not one who likes crowds, whether they consist of people at a Hunters’ Communion or beasts at some bloody hunting ground. They’re more likely to fight enemies one or two at a time, drawing them away from a crowd with pebbles. With their strength, the hunter would hopefully stagger and dispatch enemies quickly this way with just their hunting weapons. Beast mode only gets used when Antares gets desperate and really needs to up their strength even more either against a multitude of enemies or a really tough enemy. Honestly though, Antares usually doesn’t try to fight everything because it would take so much time and effort away from hunting down either a more serious beast or a covenant target.

Which Caryll runes does your hunter keep equipped? Communion to increase the number of blood vials they can hold to make up for a lack in Vitality. Anti-Clockwise Metamorphosis to increase maximum stamina. Hunter to increase stamina recovery so they can quickly restore their Endurance. It is a Covenant rune, though, so it might be replaced by Beast’s Embrace for gameplay mechanic reasons related to Antares’s storyline so that they can transform.

How much Insight does your hunter have? How does this affect them? Not much Insight because Antares care little for the mostly intangible. They still pay close attention to their surroundings nonetheless. However, they can only do so thanks to their heightened beast sense more than anything.

Does your hunter take advantage of Beasthood to fuel their attacks? How does it affect them? Oh my fucking god, all this time, I never knew there was an actual Beast Mode already incorporated into the gameplay. That being said, of course Antare takes advantage of Beasthood to fight. Not all the time though, only when desperate. It really messes with their psyche, though, because they have a hard time reconciling the fact that they’re both human and monster.

Is there a beast or type of enemy your hunter likes to fight? An enemy they avoid? Antares both loves and hates fighting beasts. They feel like they’re fulfilling their duty as a Yharnamite citizen every time they take down a scourge wolf or a blood-addled hunter. But they also feel like they’re succumbing to the scourge more and more because every kill seems to increase their bloodlust. Not to mention looking at every blood-addled hunter keeps reminding Antares of their own possible fate… The more Eldritch looking enemies really just befuddle the hunter in the meantime. Not too much felt when fighting them than some disgust and the previously mentioned confusion at how much creatures could exist.

Do they often summon the Old Hunters or hunters from other worlds to aid them? Not really, Antares is a bit of a lone fighter.

PLOT DECISIONS

Does your hunter’s story deviate from the central plot of Bloodborne? In what ways? I guess so. I’ve mostly filled this meme out for an Antares who exists in @thesaint-jimmy‘s pre-game timeline of the Bloodborne universe. By the game’s time, I would have had Antares become an old hunter who has long left the Dream like Eileen. They would be more like an NPC the Good Hunter encounters.

Does your hunter try to rescue any of the civilians of Yharnam? Are they successful? Of course. Despite their introvertedness, Antares still tries to keep an eye out for others in Yharnam. They are successful only with some, though (namely those NPCs who safely make it to Odeon Chapel except for the crotchety old man and the suspicious beggar). Suspicious beggar dude and Antares immediately sense that they’re both Abhorrent Beasts and fight because they obviously have different thoughts about controlling themselves/endangering people when in Beast Form. Crotchety old man is just a loss Antares grimly but firmly accepts because they’ve gotten so used to losing people over the years of the Hunt. Father Gascoigne’s daughters are another story however because Antares has always been protective of children. To know they indirectly caused the deaths of a former acquaintance’s children brings about a great sense of shame and failure.

Does your hunter kill the Impostor Iosefka or let her continue her work? Thanks to their heightened beast senses, Antares probably smells there being a different Iosefka in the clinic. That certainly raises suspicion so the hunter would check everything out and discover the Celestial Mob experiments, much to their horror. After all, being friends with someone who was once cruelly used for experimentation would make such work leave an incredibly disgusting taste in Antares’s mouth. They’d definitely kill the Imposter Iosefka before mercy-killing all of the Celestial Mobs she’s made for experimentation. 

Do they fight Djura or befriend him? What about Eileen the Crow? Befriend both Djura and Eileen. I imagine them both knowing Antares before the game timeline of Bloodborne.

Do they choose to side with Alfred or Queen Annalise? Perhaps Alfred, though they are a little concerned about his trustworthiness given his evident devotion to Master Logarius.

Does your hunter enter the Chalice Dungeons? I personally would enter the Chalice Dungeons because they seem like cool places to explore and practice combat skills. Antares probably wouldn’t be interested in them though.

Does your hunter enter the Hunter’s Nightmare? Do they defeat the Orphan of Kos? Maybe to the first question and no to the second question. I imagine there could be a timeline where Antares dies as a blood-addled beast so they’re sent to suffer eternally in the Hunter’s Nightmare. 

What is your hunter’s final choice at the end of the game? They accept Gehrman’s offer so they can leave the dream. But hmm… it would be interesting to consider an Antares who decides to take Gherman’s place if they think forever leaving their friends with their humanity still whole would be a better fate than eventually succumbing to the Scourge like Father Gascoigne.  

If they accept Gehrman’s offer, what does your hunter do once they’re free of the Hunter’s Dream? Immediately return home to their loved ones and try to continue living their life as Yharnam continues to descend into Hell. I don’t know to be honest. Antares has never been one to work actively towards the Greater Good, but they’ll provide support as needed.

If applicable, how does your hunter die? I don’t know because I want my Gaysian character to live a wholesome life well into their older years with their loved ones but… I also love Soulsborne style tragedies.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your hunter? I have a Dark Souls AU version of Antares where they’re far more chill as a character because they’re not a monster trapped in an urban hellhole. Get Out (2017)

Jordan Peele’s debut film caught me completely by surprised. Buoyed by the (at the time) unanimous positive reception of the film, I decided to watch the film blind, eschewing my habit of reading reviews and listening to podcasts about a film before watching it myself. Ignoring the “spoiler culture” debate, I can say that the film’s “surprise” really did catch me off guard and perhaps made the film a more heightened experience than it would have been had I knew about the premise beforehand.

With that in mind, I’ll do something that I haven’t really felt the need to do and leave a big SPOILER WARNING line break here on the off chance that you might want to watch the film and discover its premise on your own.

Given Peele’s pedigree as a creator, perhaps it’s not surprising that he would make a film that touches on and satirises the supposed “post-racial” landscape of a post-Obama America, and in some ways the film might have worked much better in the alternate reality where Hilary Clinton won the election and liberals were busy congratulating themselves for electing both the first Black president and the first female president. In the world we live in now, where demagogues rule the political class and have effectively divided the citizenry into an us versus them mentality, many of the film’s satirical moments take on a darker tone.

The opening scene of the film is reminiscent of a sketch from Key & Peele:

A young Black man, Andre, is walking in what is seemingly a white neighbourhood when a car begins to tail him. Trying his best to avoid a confrontation, he turns around and walks in the other direction, only to be assaulted and subdued by the driver of the car. I don’t know if Peele wanted the audience to think of his previous sketch during this scene, which similarly reproduces the fear that Black men must have of being seen as suspicious simply because of their race, but while the sketch ends with a cute visual gag showing us the only way Black men can deescalate a conflict (by essentially being white), the film leaves us with a sense of dread and uncertainty as Andre is dragged into the trunk of the car and driven away. Little did I know that this opening is a set up for a reveal that could top any K&P sketch.

After the cold open, we are then introduced to the main character of the film, Chris, and his girlfriend Rose. We see that they are in a picturesque, loving relationship that is threatened by the fact that Rose’s parents do not know that Chris is black. But this tension is quickly diffused by Rose, as she points out that her father would have voted Obama for a third term if it were possible. On the way to Rose’s childhood home, a white police officer seemingly harasses Chris but is quickly rebuffed by Rose, who essentially accuses the police officer of perpetrating implicit racism.

It’s meant to be a celebratory moment — for the audience it reaffirms the belief that resistance is the best way to confront racism, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that while Chris is willing to comply with the police officer’s demands, Rose is the one who chooses to stand up to this petty harassment. It certainly helps that Chris tells Rose that he found it “hot” when she defended him from the cop, confirming that as voyeurs thrust into this interracial relationship, we should feel good about these two characters and what they represent in 2017 (particularly in light of Loving (2016), the film that chronicled the life of Richard and Mildred Loving).

We’re meant to find Chris’ meeting with Rose’s parents awkward, particularly because their family has two Black servants named Georgina and Walter, but the film really turns when we first meet Rose’s brother Jeremy. When the family sits down for dinner, Jeremy sizes up Chris and begins to describe his physical features. It’s a conversation that’s off-putting, because Chris is trying to be polite and the rest of the family is trying to play off Jeremy’s blunt examination of Chris’ body. At this point we’re still meant to think that the family is embarrassed at their son’s behaviour because it’s inappropriate, when in reality, it’s because Jeremy is dangerously close to revealing their family’s true purpose. It’s also the first hint to the audience that there is something wrong with this domestic scene, as the scene ends with Jeremy trying to put Chris into a headlock, reminding us of the opening sequence when a masked assailant choked out Andre and kidnapped him.

This turn is when the film begins to dole out its absurd premise and also begins to make the audience raise questions about the so-called post-racism society that the election of Obama was supposed to represent. We get a quick hint that the Armitage family’s “progressive” views on Black bodies derives from admiration when we learn that Rose’s grandfather failed to qualify for the 1936 Olympics because he lost a race to Jesse Owens. This loss triggered an obsession for the Armitage patriarch — rather than react negatively to losing to a Black man, we learn that he admired the physical superiority of the Black body and wanted to find a way to claim it for himself.

The film plays on the scientific racism that still pervades, if the recent Charles Murray controversy is any sign, our society today. While various racists used the scientific method to claim the superiority of the White body over the Black body, with phrenology being one of the big examples of how science was perverted to make racist claims, Get Out inverts this trope by having the all the white characters in the film declare the superiority of the Black body. It is a play on race that is meant to offend the very people it is meant to preach to, because these characters are the definition of East Coast liberals. Billy Hawkins “The Black Student Athlete: The Colonized Black Body” writes:

The Black Body has always been valued in this society for its physical abilities. The main reason so many blacks are now located outside their native lands is that they were needed for physical labor in the early United States. Blacks were not sought to take part in the intellectual development of this country; their existence in the United States was strictly for the physical devel- opment of this country (e.g., working in the cotton, rice, and tobacco fields). (33) 

And this is very much how the people in the film situates Chris and the other Black characters in the film — they are valued only for their bodies because of their perceived physical superiority. With this outlook on race in mind, we find out that the Armitage family has used science for their own nefarious purposes, not to find a way to denigrate and reject Blackness, but to subsume and consume it. For this family, and their (mostly white) friends, Black bodies are desirable because of their physical strength, and are sites for colonization.

This colonization is where the horror element of the film is situated — the Armitage family has discovered a way for white people to literally colonize Black bodies by putting their brains into the bodies of the various Black men and women that Rose and Jeremy have kidnapped. The reason why this revelation isn’t seen as farcical is because of the prescient and very real issues that America faces today. Racism and the exploitation of race isn’t “over”, and we don’t live in a “post-racist” world. In a way, it’s a natural evolution of George Yancy’s discussion of the Black body in his article “Whiteness and the Return of the Black Body”:

Within the white imaginary, to be Black means to be born an obstacle at the very core of one’s being. To ex-ist as Black is not “to stand out” facing an ontological horizon filled with future possibilities of being other than what one is. Rather, being Black negates the “ex” of existence. Being Black is reduced to facticity. (237)

The Black body, and what it means as a political and existential entity, is tied directly to how it is viewed by a white body, and the idea of a white consciousness invading and colonizing a Black body is the epitome of rendering Black consciousness invisible.

It’s why I think this film was created in anticipation of a Hilary Clinton win, because it would have served as a stark reminder of why Americans shouldn’t just pat themselves on the back for voting down the racist fear-monger. In this hypothetical reality where we are living under President Hilary Clinton, the Black Lives Matter movement wouldn’t have simply folded and disappeared into the ether of liberal good intentions. The issues that Black Americans faced in 2016 would still confront them in 2017 and the Armitage family is meant to remind us of how dominant whiteness still pervades the halls of power.

Of course, in the context of a Trump presidency, the satire found in the film re-configures itself. For example, there’s a scene where Chris’ friend Rod tries to go to the police to report Chris’ disappearance. He runs down the entire story about how this crazy white family has hypnotized and kidnapped Andre, Chris, and potentially many other Black people, only to be laughed at by the cops listening to his story. It’s important to note that the cops are Black as well, so it’s not easily read as simply a take on how white police officers treat Black victims. Instead, this scene reads as a condemnation of authority and power, particularly when we see the various abuses of power perpetrated by the White House in the last month. Rod is forced to take matters into his own hands and save Chris himself because he realizes that the system that is supposed to protect him is actively working against him.

The fact that the film works in either political context is what makes me appreciate its satire. The film reveals a sad truth about race in America that is both timeless and apolitical, making us understand how far we still need to go as a society before we can look back and see this film as completely absurd. When you think about the greatest piece of satire, Swift’s A Modest Proposal, the idea of turning Irish babies into food in order to solve poverty is makes as laugh now. But when the Irish were denigrated by the British in the 18th Century, one can only imagine how the political elite would have received such a scathing attack. Maybe we’ll look back on Get Out and laugh at how simple-minded we were as a society, although hopefully it won’t take us a hundred years to reach that point.

Indeed, the film’s ending warns us against seeking an immediate catharsis. We are meant to feel a sense of elation as Chris single-highhandedly kills off each member of the Armitage family, building to the catharsis of Rod’s appearance at the end of the film when he comes to rescue Chris. But while Chris is safe, the problem that the film raises isn’t still lingers in the air. We don’t know if the horrors that the Armitages inflicted on their Black victims are ever exposes, and the kidnapping of Andre remains an dangling thread that is, at least in the moment of the ending, simply ignored. The movie certainly has a “happy ending”, but the question is, “happy for who?”.

It would be amiss of me to not mention the other interesting qualities of the film. First and foremost, I appreciate that the film trusts and allows the audience to figure out the premise by giving them clues that look obvious in hindsight. For example, there’s a scene where we see Walter sprinting the grounds of the Armitage home in the middle of the night for no real reason. But when you learn that Rose’s grandfather put his brain inside Walter’s body and remember that he was a sprinter who admired Jesse Owens’ body, his late night sprinting makes sense. The grandfather is flaunting the fact that he has successfully colonized a Black body and is as good, if not better, than Jesse Owens. There are many moments like this in the film that let you piece together the “gimmick” long before it reveals itself.

The small moments of the film expose bigger questions about the racial politics of America beyond the ones raised above. When Rose disarms Rod by telling him that she knows he wanted to have sex with her, we see that racial fetishization isn’t as easy as normative whiteness trying to consume Blackness. Rose knows that Rod desires her, perhaps because of her face, and he himself is unable to escape her accusation and can only respond by retreating from her.

There’s also another moment when all the white “guests” invited to the Armitage home to inspect Chris is disturbed by the introduction of a Japanese man named Hiroki Tanaka. The film could have simply left it at “white people want Black bodies”, but the introduction of a Japanese character who bids on Chris’ body complicates this simple Black-White dichotomy that exists when we talk about race in America. In terms of the power exchange found in the racial politics of America, where do Asians fit in? Are they the colonizers or the colonized? The film doesn’t answer this question, but I appreciate that it at least raises it.

I tend to have more milk than cereal even though I fill up my bowls to the top with cereal. XD 2: do you like the feeling of cold air on your cheeks on a wintery day?

I live in Florida so the coldest it gets is usually around 50-60 during the days and 20-30 at night, if we’re lucky. But, yes, I do, very much so. 3: what random objects do you use to bookmark your books?

I don’t read books, but back when I was in middle/high school, I used to just fold the edge of the book and using a pencil, put a dash where i last left off, or being an artist, I would create my own little bookmarks using a normal piece of paper. 4: how do you take your coffee/tea?

I don’t drink coffee/tea, I probably drink cappuccino and that’s only from WaWa’s when it’s cold enough and I usually put cream and like 2-4 packets of sugar in it.  5: are you self-conscious of your smile?

Only when I haven’t brushed or recently ate something like lasagna or some sort of pasta. 6: do you keep plants?
