Digiweek 2022 Day 2
(Sorry im late i was busy procrastinating)
I struggled with this one. I didn't have many ideas, and I was considering drawing the Jogress partners (which I'll probably draw someday), I decided to draw these three. This is my first time drawing Wizarmon and 01 Hikari, but I think it turned out ok.
In my AU, Hikari befriends Tailmon and Wizarmon when she's separated from Taichi in the Digital World. They both somehow escaped from being Myotismon's servants (idk its been a couple months since i last watched adventure and my memory is shit).

@digimon02countdown Day 7 - What do you love about Digimon Adventure 02?
While my attachment to Digimon started and persisted due to my love to the original Adventure, there are still quite a few things about 02 that always kept me around. I have already hinted at it in previous posts; the relationships, similarities and support between the "older" and "new" Chosen Children, the concept of the multiverse, Jogress evolution (also the fact that my OTP are absolute dads to the kids)... But I'd say the most important aspect for me is the bonding between the characters. And nothing signifies this more for me, nothing is as outstanding, significant and vibrant - as the development of the relationship between Daisuke and Ken.
I would argue that, overall, no relationship gets that much focus, that much visible positive development than these two. And yes, upon getting asked, I will never deny that, in my opinion, there is a sense of romantic tension between them too, but in this post, I just want to write about how fascinating, soothing and beautiful their bond is to me in general.
Their initial set-up is, once again, that of rivals. That is a theme Digimon has always been playing with - but I'd say no other series threw that trope for a loop like this before. On one hand, there is the fact that they're both playing football, even ending up facing each other at a point in the series where Ken is still considered to be that perfect, untouchable genius, good at and with everything, while Daisuke is considered a thick-headed knucklehead, goodhearted, but brash and not really talented in many areas - and yet, he still admired Ken at this point. Then of course, there is the fact that they're on opposing ends, enemies in the Digital World, having brutal, cruel fights against one another as Chosen Child vs. Digimon Kaiser - until the spell breaks, with the Crest of Miracles breaking Ken's curse.
And from now on, the boy - who's responsible for his own Digimon partner's death and the suffering of so many others - will have to face the aftermath of what he's done, dealing with guilt and self-esteem issues, feeling unworthy and unlovable.
But then there is Daisuke - the only one who immediately wants to give him the chance to atone for what he's done. He is not forgiving him right away, but wants him to be able to make up for everything - and with kindness and the persistence to not let him sacrifice himself and die, they achieve the unthinkable: Their Digimon combine, their hearts pound in sync. They seem to be connected in ways that make Daisuke get excited - and scare the heck out of Ken. He thought he didn't have anything or anyone else but his reborn Digimon partner and family, and now there's this boy he used to fight, he used to be enemies with... Who simply wants to be his friend, who wants them to be "partners" and work together.
It's confusing, it's scary. While Daisuke is sure that they're meant to be and fight next to each other, it takes time for Ken to feel ready to take the steps towards him, the others, forming bonds, friendships. But Daisuke being Daisuke makes it so much easier for him to let his walls down, slowly but steadily enabling him to show his gentle and soft side, starting to trust and rely on him as much as he does in return.
And Daisuke? Daisuke is displaying a sense of confidence and comfort that we rarely saw before - he tended to be so focused on impressing others, covering up his own insecurities with cockiness. But his bond with Ken makes all his natural kindness and straightforwardness come through easily. He may appear more simple-minded at first glance, but his heart has the right priorities - and he'll do what it takes to save Ken, from himself, from darkness, helping him to be his true self.
Daisuke doesn't doubt their connection for a second - and that's why it's so important that Ken is still able to shake him. That he has an impact on him like no other. He will give Ken all the time he needs to face his demons, to do the things that are uncomfortable to him - and he'll be by his side all the way.
They are partners, they've got each other's backs. And as long as they don't lose sight of themselves and each other, it will always be this way.

I wanna talk about Angewomon, LadyDevimon and Mastemon.
Tumblr media
Angewomon and LadyDevimon both debuted in Digital Monster Ver. S: Digimon Tamers for the Sega Saturn back in 1998.
Tumblr media
Angewomon is an Archangel, and LadyDevimon is a Fallen Angel who can be considered somewhat of Angewomon's dark counterpart. This is reflected in their designs, as they contain certain elements that mirror each other.
Tumblr media
Digimon World Re:Digitize features them as Partner Digimon of one singular tamer, Mirei Mikagure. Later in Digimon Cyber Sleuth, we get introduced to their Jogress Evolution Mastemon, almost 20 years after their own debut.
Tumblr media
The Starter Deck ST-10 Parallel World Tactician revolves around that very Jogress Evolution. It contains matching cards for Angewomon and LadyDevimon, and of course, Mastemon is featured in it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ST-10 Mastemon Alternative Art card was released in the Japanese format through the Starter Deck Complete Set 2021 and in the English format as Box Toppers in EX-02 Digital Hazard and AB-01 Adventure Box. The ST-10 Angewomon and LadyDevimon will receive Alternative Art Cards along with a matching Playmat in 2023s PB-14.
On the playmat, you can also see Mastemon's silhouette in between the two.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Starter Deck name Parallel World Tactician is also Mastemon's title. The Reference Book states that it leads an army of Angel and Fallen Angel Digimon. The BT3 card of Mastemon also makes a reference to this.
Tumblr media
In the upcoming BT-11, Angewomon and LadyDevimon once again received matching cards with mutual support effects, this time also featuring Mirei alongside them on the card.

↓ Original notes + "Why there's still no retcon of the lore" below ↓
First, the OG notes from the outdated post:
→ This count is not about “which was the very first digimon-human contact”, and yes about people with a digivice. Because if we were going to count who was the first human to have contact with a digimon, it’s actually two and they’re Oikawa Yukio and Iori’s dad, Hida Hiroki.
→ I’m ignoring all the inconsistencies with other material (WS & ▽) because they seem to not match well with the original count. So, in this case, Ken’s statement in the anime (Aug 2000) is the one to be accounted for here. I don’t know if Ryo counts as Chosen (possibly yes, judging by 02 flashbacks) but I’m not sure where to place him here.
→ I’m only adding Michael to the count, even if he’s not a main character and yes a side character, because 02 ep 14 had this statement regarding him. And I like Michael too so, let me have him there :V
→ Menoa states in the movie she met Morphomon when she was nine, and according to the Dash X novel version, she’s the same age as Taichi. Which means she became a Chosen in 1997.
→ I couldn’t think of how to include Maki & Daigo’s group in this because ▽ contradicts with the original lore’s math – The fact the Pt4 book released with the movie on Japanese theaters state them being in Elementary School the time they went to their adventure in the DW, and later the confession scene means they’re in University/College makes them possibly been Chosen Children way before 1995, and I’d take it granted that they were chosen by someone else IF weren’t for the Homeostasis being involved in the scene and the digivice being way too modern for that time (it was basically Taichi group’s model. If you look at Rui’s digivice in the leaked footage from DigiFes2022, his model seems to be different and an older version)
→ That said, Meiko is the only character in ▽ that does not fall into contradiction with the math count. Because in 1999 there was not only Taichi’s group, but also other 8 non-featured Chosen according to Kakudou’s notes. So we can consider Meiko one of those other 8 children.
→ When it comes to Wallace, I prefer to think he is game in the original math – Taichi and Hikari met that Koromon in 95, but they had no digivice until 1999. Which means it can be possible that Wallace had encountered Gummy-Choco’s egg before 1995 and only became an official Chosen Child later.
Now, the new notes:
→ To avoid spoiling any detail about the movie itself, I’ll make sure to tell you they might have changed how the math works only. It’s not like, “everyone gets a digimon at the same time” but rather… “A X number of people get partnered with a digimon in different periods of a year” – Which means yes, you can still count Rui and Ukkomon as the origins of the Digimon partnership, but that later in the same year someone else (or, say, Wallace in the main timeline) got a partner months later.
→ That said, I’m opting to update this list and work within the idea that various sources of partnership (Homeostasis, Holy Beasts, etc) can be counted in the math. Remember – Homeostasis (not referred to as this in the OG series but yes in the novels) had selected Taichi & co., but the Holy Beasts chose Dai-Miya-Iori. And some other entity probably chose Ken in August 2000. This could explain why there’s a higher number of partnerships happening at the same time in Adv’99 and 02.
→ As I mentioned before, and indirectly supported by the staff (check the official timeline at the top of the list), ▽ has violated the lore to the point it goes in direct conflict with the new 02 movie and the entire timeline. So I guess it’s better to consider ▽ as its own timeline/Alternate universe than forcing it into the main timeline.
→ That said, and since Meiko does exist in Kizuna/main timeline, I suppose Maki and Daigo also do exist, and maybe they got their “ages” retconned and down to something suitable to the universe’s math count. They can still be part of the previous five kids mentioned in Adv’99 anime/novels, but they are probably around their teen years, or even early 20s instead, not fully adults working for the government I suppose. Or alternatively, just not Chosen yet. Pick your favorite route, Maki/Daigo fans!!
→ Yes, the Koromon from the very first movie IS NOT THE SAME PARTNERED WITH TAICHI. This never was confirmed, and was just fandom's theory. Considering how ▽ also made this mistake and possibly was one of the lore's violation, I prefer to believe this means it's not the same Koromon/Agumon partnered with Taichi in Adv'99.

Spoilers! Digimon Adventure 02 The Beginning [Dub]
Tumblr media
Here's my full System Restore write-up of Digimon 02 The Beginning. Spoilers below!
In this movie, an adorable, sympathizing Digimon gives a poor, desperate kid the chance to make his humble wishes come true. Clearly they’re the villains of the piece.
Depending on whether you approach The Beginning from the perspective of Lui or the Zero Two cast, you’re going to find it to be a story about one of two things. Looking solely at Lui and Ukkomon, there’s a lesson in how wishes are fulfilled. You’re only going to get what you want out of a relationship if you express your needs clearly and understand the motivations of those trying to provide them. That applies double if they can magically grant wishes, as any good Monkey’s Paw derivative would illustrate. The Zero Two kids face a tale about the nature of fate. Not the dread over an inevitable tragedy as the last parts of tri. and Kizuna explored. Instead, the dread of learning that something wonderful originated from something awkward and manufactured, and how an origin point can be more uncomfortable than a fixed destination.
It’s a bombshell to both us and the established cast: the digidestined were created not to help a digital entity maintain order, but to help a abused four year old feel less alone. There are some staggering questions that arise from all this. Did Ukkomon empower Homeostasis to choose digidestined? Would the Digital World have been defenseless against its evils if Lui hadn’t made the wish? Why couldn’t Ukkomon get anyone together for Lui’s eighth birthday? Even if everything that came before this remains in continuity (and it’s supposed to), it twists the initial contact between child and Digimon into something forced rather than a divine destiny. That’s what the kids have to grapple with, and grapple they do.
What they come to realize is that even if their fated partnership had such shallow origins, they themselves made it genuine. They’re the ones who put the work into creating and maintaining these bonds, the same as any other relationship. The preservation of past canon reinforces that, allowing them to look back to Willis and Ken and even Lui himself to understand that such partnerships, well-intentioned as they may be, have the capacity to go wrong. Theirs didn’t (or at least they got better), and that’s still something to cherish. In this way, it’s still a struggle to accept fate the same way Tai had to in tri. and Kizuna, but coping with the past rather than the future.
Meanwhile, contrast that to Lui and you can understand his cynicism towards the concept of digidestined. Grateful to have his life turned around and unwilling to question the implications of Ukkomon’s actions, he doesn’t put the effort into maintaining a partnership because he never had the impetus to. Without the stakes the other digidestined faced, he’s allowed to continue living his fantasy, only realizing the implications when he sees other kids and Digimon risking their lives because of the wish. Feel to mark that as a possible clue to some of the above questions. Either way he goes to the other extreme, rejecting the wish entirely, inflicting some gruesome body horror, and making Ukkomon very sad.
In this regard, and our astonishment that Kari calls this out so bluntly, Lui and Ukkomon are simultaneously the story’s protagonists and antagonists. Lui’s wish and his initial refusal to rein in his partner are as responsible for this mess as Ukkomon was, while both seek to work together to find a more organic solution to make young Lui’s life better and not realize the wish’s final apex. The Beginning is very naive about the power of communication. Sympathetic as it tries to be towards Lui’s mother, a random stranger grabbing her out of nowhere is unlikely to suddenly reform an abusive parent. And it’s hard to envision a way Lui could have successfully articulated his wish better after it was already set in motion. But this movie follows a series where Davis reforms a former villain just by talking to him enough, so don’t act so shocked.
The movie certainly communicates its feelings about this world’s continuity. Its way of honoring everything that came before it while simultaneously being cavalier about how it’s incorporated is either incredibly frustrating or the most zen thing we’ve ever seen. Kari and TK know of Homeostasis and mention it by name, so they must know of the original five digidestined. But using that to question Lui’s claim of being the first would be distracting and fruitless, so we don’t see it. The epilogue is more intact than ever, with Davis consumed by ramen, Kari helping with a daycare, and Yolei hitting on Ken. But it also treats the notion of giving everyone a Digimon partner as a nightmare scenario with little elaboration. Not that it needs any after Savers and Ghost Game, but Zero Two’s ending relies on the idea of making Digimon accessible to everyone. And despite its close links to Kizuna, when the kids wonder if killing Ukkomon will end everyone’s partnerships, it never weighs on their minds that they may already have a shelf life. In fact, the destruction of the D3s suggest that the bonds are again limitless, possibly reversing mechanics we just learned about.
So why is it all right? Both the elimination of the digivices and the final narration suggest that even if the Digimon Adventure timeline is unbreakable, it is malleable. Events can swerve in different directions, new revelations can upset what we used to believe, contradictions can co-exist, and the rules and logic of the world can be made and broken on a whim. We have to allow ourselves to put our assumptions and expectations aside for the sake of a good story. We still seem headed towards the epilogue, but the surprises Kizuna and The Beginning throw at us suggest we should stay on our toes as we await whatever comes next. Remembering how dull it once seemed to be stuck traveling a narrow path to 2027, isn’t that what we should be wishing for?
My Grade: A
Loose Data:
Suppose we should start out with thoughts on the dub, which is mostly faithful and generally solid. Davis, Ken, Veemon, and Hawkmon are back in peak form, and Yolei sounds more natural and expressive than she did in Kizuna. TK, Patamon, and Cody are fine, while our substitute Wormmon does his best. Kari and Gatomon have the same voices from tri. and Kizuna but sound a little shakier this go-round. Armadillomon’s the same actor, but an shockingly stark downgrade in his direction. As the leads, both of Lui’s actors and Ukkomon absolutely deliver standout performances. Good luck getting that birthday song out of your nightmares.
As far as the script goes, some things like Hikarigaoka and a couple attacks don’t get adapted to dub equivalents, but everything’s pretty understandable. The conversation about switching to D3s is the only one that seems unfocused.
That “Journey 1, Route 1” bit at the start makes it feel like there’s some bigger plan in motion for more Digimon Adventure stories. But it also feels like whatever that’s supposed to be about should have started with Kizuna.
Even if the story is not really about the Zero Two kids, Davis, Ken, and Yolei certainly make their presences felt. Davis Davises his way into getting everyone on board working with Lui and with Veemon offers the motivational speeches. Ken keeps him in check and tries to inject reason to his madness, even if Davis’s introspective side shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise to him. Yolei is back to offering pure personality in her dealings with Davis, even calling out him and Ken’s “flirting” (which Davis blushes at!). Kari and TK occasionally bring up interesting points. Cody… he got them into a computer room?
It doesn’t matter for purposes of this movie and nobody is in a position to deliver answers, but they bring up Ukkomon’s connection to a higher power a lot. A connection to Homeostasis makes the most sense, but there were an uncomfortable number of helixes flying around when Lui dove into Ukkomon at the end there. That’s not usually good.
The effects of Ukkomon melting and later dying track well enough if you realize Lui isn’t actually changing the past. But his mother dropping dead is alarming since she wasn’t physically unwell when Lui made the wish. Her death suggests that Ukkomon taking control of her means it actually killed her years ago. Hope those classmates are all right.
We get the sudden canonization of the ol’ “digidestined count doubles every year” thing that was only a rough guide that even Zero Two proper didn’t actually follow. It still can only be seen as a loose estimate given its inevitable march to the “everyone on Earth is a digidestined” scenario the kids fought so hard to avert, and there are so many surprise digidestined cropping up before the Zero Two kids (Menoa and Meiko are just the recent ones) that it’s a disservice to steer the audience to any hard numbers. So it’s a strange choice to mention out loud, especially when Miyako or Ken just dropping the raw estimate would have sufficed for that scene.
It’s worth pointing out that Lui convincing his mother to stop abusing her kid is happening inside Ukkomon, so the improbable effectiveness of that act could well be one last bit of wish fulfillment before they hash things out. Wonder what would have happened if Davis actually had intervened in the first leap.

Rough thoughts on the movie in no particular order now that I have a moment:
Going in with the heavy hitters 'cause I can't stop thinking about it but Lui's claims that he is the first person to ever partner with a Digimon are unsubstantiated and lack hard evidence - also, unless it was explained in Kizuna and Tri, I'm pretty sure Digimon Adventure contradicts this?? (I'll check into this when I have more time, don't @ me).
The implication that Ukkomon made all of the Digimon hostile towards one another so that the Digi-Destined would fight to defend themselves and therefore Lui is nonsense and even if there is nothing to directly contradict it in Adventure and 02, I'm gonna hard pass on that canon because it lends itself too much to the idea that all Digimon would just be wholesome and good if not for Ukkomon making them fight and that feels like it excuses the things that Devimon, Piedmon, MaloMyotismon, and the other villain Digimon did or removes their free will?
Also, have I mentioned what Lui said didn't make sense???? Lui might be closer to Tai's age so it's feasible he could have become digi-destined around the same time as Tai but DUDE, Owikawa and Cody's dad discovered the Digital World and Digimon when they were kids????? AND THAT WAS AGES BEFORE LUI WAS BORN. It just doesn't make sense unless this is some alternate universe where that didn't happen or Lui is a time traveler or something (which is possible they did time travel...)
Speaking of, I'm so interested in the implication that Lui went back in time and talked to his mom about his younger self and she seemed to snap out of it for a second, like, if that was a permanent change do you think he created another alternate reality in that instance?
Moving on though, Davis. DAVIS. Seeing him in the film cured my depression. His reaction to Lui's mom was so so so Davis and I felt so strongly about it and then Ken's immediate "we can't we could ruin our own future" response is exactly how I've always imagined a time-travel AU would go between them.
ALSO: DAVIS AND KEN. The flirting. Ken just straight up grabbing both of Davis hands. (He's so COMFORTABLE WITH HIMSELF NOW) Ken throwing himself off Paildramon after Davis. I'm LIVING. The little high five they did to congratulate themselves. Ken's remark that summoning Paildramon was a little much seconds after I was like "wow that's so gay and unnecessary". Both of them were just so on point in this film. Davis was upbeat and optimistic and just believes the best in people/digimon so hard and when his tendency to charge in got in the way Ken was there to mellow him out so he didn't do anything rash.
Yolei did feel kind of off for some reason in the film but that might have been because I was so excited for the film that I couldn't pay attention to everything that was happening. I was only able to see it once and I missed so many things I know it. I can't wait for it to be released physically so I can own it and just rewatch it a dozen times.
Speaking of Yolei, though, I cannot believe the film framed her like Uhura trying to come between Kirk and Spock (which is comically absurd btw). In nearly ever scene possible it's Davis, Yolei but slightly offset and then Ken beside Davis. Like the animators are desperate to push the Kenyako narrative, like, clearly they know about the Daiken feelings being very strong with fans but they were trying to visually remind us painfully hard that, hey, actually the pairing is Kenyako. But buddy did that feel forced and it's probably why Yolei felt off to me.
J U S T I C E F O R C O D Y. That's all.
THEY COULD HAVE LET ROBBIE DAYMOND DO A TERRIBLE TEXAN ACCENT!!! THEY SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST TRIED!!!!
Kari actually didn't have very many major lines in the film I felt like but I loved the little scenes of her at the beginning, actually, though, she was kind of just there next to T.K. the entire time because the film also framed them together so hard it's SO WEIRD THEY AREN'T CANON.
T.K. though. God he was just so T.K. in this film. The trauma of losing Patamon in Adventure and then whatever happened in Tri like. It was just the most T.K. thing to do and say when they were talking about what they had to do. But also, I loved whenever the cops showed up and Davis goes "WHAT, HOW DID THEY FIND US?" and T.K. was like "ARE YOU KIDDING!???? YOU AND YOUR BOYFRIEND SUMMONED A GIANT FLYING MONSTER!!!!"
Honestly, this movie was everything I ever wanted really. About three minutes before we went into the movie I was talking about ghost game with my friend and how I wished it hadn't been for kids because it had such great and frankly horrifying concepts and everything was just sunshine and rainbows for children and nothing bad ever really happened which was disappointing.
And then I watched The Beginning. This movie felt so much like coming home from the start because I felt like I knew these character's so well (I lost count of how many times I sat in the theater and said a thing, only to have one of the character's also say the thing a second later), and everything was so bright and nice and then it became an eldritch horror show.
Let me tell you, when I watched the trailer for the first time I said to my friend "dude what was with that trailer??? The music????? Why is it so sinister???" and, despite that, I still did not see the horror coming and neither did anyone else in the theater. Everyone and I do mean everyone went very still and quiet and tense the second the first hint of bad began. We were all so unprepared and it was very upsetting.
As I was leaving the theater, I heard a woman fighting with her husband over having brought their very little daughter to see the movie. The mom clearly thought it was a fun kids movie because it was animated and whoever is in charge of American films absolutely thinks all animated movies are for kids so it wasn't rated which is how the film industry always handles anime films.
They seem completely incapable of understanding that animation doesn't equal child friendly. Watching it, though, it's never been more clear that a Digimon movie was for older audiences than watching The Beginning. Like, this film was not for kids. This film was for us. The setting. The themes. The fact that 79% of the entire movie is exposition/dialogue...
When the little girl's dad asked her if she liked the film as it ended, he sounded strained and his wife was complaining that the film was going to give her nightmares and while his daughter said yes, she liked the film it was in a way that you could tell that no, she didn't really because she had no idea what was going on - it was bright and colorful and there were cute characters sometimes so that was probably fine but she couldn't have been older than six so it was probably very boring for her.
That is one of my few complaints about the film, actually. It was nearly all talking and exposition. I wish there had been more action. I wish it had been a little more light hearted and goofy at times. The eldritch horror/really messed up part of the movie felt like it went on forever but that might have just been my lack of prepardness for it. I was just so shocked even while my brain was like "yes, this is what we always wanted I AM LIVING" - also because I imagined that kind of awful, dark underbelly of the world of Digimon existing for the character's I already know and love.
Nothing is going to stop me from headcanoning that Davis reaction to Lui's mom being The Worst was so immediate and visceral because he's dealing with his own trauma from his mom's refusal to accept that he's trans, okay?
I didn't care a great deal for Lui and Ukkomon obviously disturbed me to no end - I know it wasn't Ukkomon's fault, they didn't know better but also it's fair to say that I was scarred for life about Lui's parents and the baseball bat scene and I would probably like Lui a lot more if his story weren't all conjecture and exposition. Also he was so negative (understandably) and was such a downer the entire film, honestly, thank god Davis and his endless queer energy was there to breakthrough to Lui and help him see the light of queerness friendship.
Anyway, did I mention Lui's claim that he's the first ever human to partner with a digimon doesn't make sense to me? I've thought about it a little more and, fine, maybe it's possible that Lui could be the first person to partner with a Digimon but the idea that everyone else became Digi-Destined because of him and Ukkomon still doesn't sit right. Oikawa didn't get a digimon until he was an adult and died and so even though he knew about Digi-World he technically didn't become Digi-Destined and the Digital World could have existed for ages before anyone partnered with a Digimon. Those things aren't mutually exclusive, I have to remind myself, but it just doesn't feel right to me and their claims being baseless seems more legit.
Okay, I'm done, that's it for my rough thoughts on the movie, I think. They probably won't get any clearer. I'm gonna use the film to further my Trans!Davis/Daiken headcanons for sure though.
One last thing though and it's that my friend said he hated Lui because Lui took away from the 02 kids and I had to remind him that Willis exists in Hurricane Touchdown and the majority of that film is Willis and Davis talking/fighting and the other kids just existing. It's not some wild new Digimon format to have a new Digi-Destined to center the plot around.
And speaking of the plot, a final thought is on the bit where their Digivices weren't relevant anymore. That isn't off-brand either actually. I don't like that they disappeared because I have an emotional attachment to them but I understand that the narrative was not needing to prove their bonds with their Digimon and therefore anyone can have strong bonds of real friendship with or without a Digivice aka being Digi-Destined - it also makes sense with the whole "we didn't need the tags and crests to Digivolve our Digimon because our real strength comes from within" narrative that the OG Digimon Adventure established. The Digivices and tags/crests were just tools to remind them of their bonds with one another.
Anyway, that's it. I'm shutting up. This post got so long I'm sorry but also if anyone wants to share their thoughts on the movie or my bad takes but in a fun way that's cool feel free. I'm always here to talk about Digimon and how this is gonna influence all my future headcanons things but seriously don't @ me out of malice. K THX

my feelings on The Beginning. I welcome discourse and dissenting opinions, but I do NOT welcome hate. Also I'm going to bed literally right after publishing this, so I will talk to y'all tomorrow.
I loved Fullmetal Alchemist: Digimon The Beginning a lot. Seeing the English dub was a wonderful experience and it brought me back to the reason why 02 was my favorite season in the first place. I also appreciated seeing the subbed version tonight, as it helped solidify the plot in my head.
I adored Daisuke especially. I loved Daisuke's emotions and his dialogue and his ability to strike friendship into the heart of anyone. I loved his adorable interactions with Ken, his chaotic interactions with Miyako, and his extremely ship-worthy interactions with Lui. And that scene where Ken pointed out how calm he was? Extremely powerful. Also Daisuke's queer energy was off the charts in this film, just saying. That alone means so much to me.
Also Takeru was SO in character when he was like "I know there is the possibility of Digimon partner-induced nuclear war, but hello??? Patamon might die????" I realize that's an oversimplification of his point, but it felt so right for him.
So like... I don't want to get into arguments about this, because I always feel like I'm wrong about lore and people yell at me just for thinking things they think are "wrong". So these are just my personal opinions which are obviously in no way accurate.
But in my opinion, Lui wasn't the first person to partner with a Digimon. I felt that Ukkomon was unreliable and untrustworthy and unstable, so I don't trust anything he claimed was true. I don't trust Ukkomon's concept of being the reason for Digimon and human partnerships to be accurate. I mean, I could bring Hiroki Hida and Oikawa into the mix. Or Maki and Daigo (if you try to tell me tri isn't canon just because of some interview, I'm going to block you just fyi).
I also don't entirely buy Ukkomon to be the reason the Chosen Children were even Chosen. Wouldn't Lui have been part of their adventure if that was the case? There are so many reasons the Digital World needed the Chosen Children that had absolutely nothing to do with Lui and Ukkomon. The whole Digital World's existence wasn't even mentioned regarding Ukkomon.
I really just don't trust anything Ukkomon did or said. He litterally brainwashed, manipulated, and eventually killed Lui's parents, so forgive me if I find what he says hard to believe. But I seriously loved that Ukkomon was chaotic and untrustworthy. It made for a fascinating "villain". I loved that we were lead to believe some new lore that may or may not be true, depending on how much you believe Ukkomon and Lui.
I also want to believe that now that the digivices are gone (which already happened to Sora, Taichi, Yamato, and implied Mimi, Jou, and Koushiro), that they will receive Digi-eggs soon, perhaps after they go through more important situations in their adult lives. If you know me, then you know I'm not the biggest fan of the ending of Kizuna, because I felt like it was a personal attack on my adulthood. I want more than anything for there to be a reason for Taichi and the others to see their Digimon again. I believe the ending of The Beginning gave us hope that Taichi's bond with Agumon transcends his own broken digivice.
So that's it, mostly. You can all stay tuned for when the movie is available on streaming/blu-ray, because you KNOW I'll be photoshopping ponytails onto Ken again. Also I'm planning a Daisuke/Lui fic at some point.

This incident has been happening in Japan for several days. Because the production team's speech issue has angered all fans. A few days ago, Japanese loyal fans began to boycott the the movie version and have been scolding it for several days. Because according to the interview, they don't really want Taichi and his Digimon back. Today, Mr. Kakudou, the director of Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02, also released the settings for the ending of 02.
Tumblr media
Chat room about the Digimon movie and 02TV’s final reply As part of the promotion for the Digimon movie that is currently being released, a conversation between Digimon's monster designer and the producer of the movie, Digimon Adventure at the time, was released in a Twitter chat room. The purpose of this article is not to discuss the content of the film. In part of the chat room conversation, the producer (hereinafter referred to as P) made such a statement. Although not completely accurate, the general idea is: "In the final chapter of Digimon Adventure 02, the protagonists have grown up and their children have gathered together. Before that, children with partner Digimon from all over the world will also appear one after another, but looking at the world in recent years situation, I began to think that those children would later be involved in conflicts in various places and their lives would not be peaceful.” As for how this is connected to this movie, let’s not talk about it for now.
The final chapter of Digimon Adventure 02, especially the scenes 25 years after the production in 2002, is said to be as if the number of years in between was not considered at all, but in fact this is not the case. I think based on what I still remember Write these down. The process leading up to this scene was discussed with the script writers including the series director, but it was said that they had not been considered at all and were not polite to the other script writers. So let me write a little bit about what exactly I considered and how long I thought about it. First of all, based on the setting of the previous TV anime Digimon Adventure, human children and digital monsters will become partners. This number will double every year. The stage of the previous work was also 1999, which was the year of the real-time screening. The number was 8, which were the protagonists of the show. In "02", which was set in 2002, there should be 64 people becoming new partners, and 3 of them became the protagonist team of the show. In the climax of the final episode, children with partner Digimon from all over the world gathered together, totaling more than 100 people. The exact total is slightly less than everyone, as there must have been some people who were unable to participate for some reason at that time.
Based on this premise, 25 years later, not only children, but all humans, including adults, have Digimon partners. So what happens during this process? Having a partner Digimon means that it will need corresponding living space and food for at least as long as that Digimon exists in the real world. Some abilities may be quite dangerous. This is fine when the numbers are small, but once the number reaches a certain level, they may become targets of discrimination and segregation, and of course there will also be motivations for military use. In fact, conflicts and disputes occur all the time in the world. Even if this were not the case, there are still many areas in the world that are dangerous just to live in. Children with partner Digimon will be in great danger. This extends all the way to adults and even affects the way religions exist, a process that cannot always be peaceful throughout the world. It is foreseeable that even from the perspective of a relationship with the digital world that is almost the same as the real world, this may shake the stability of culture, country, etc. Why do we still need to increase the number of people who have partner Digimon despite this? That is the relationship between human evolution and Digimon. I have said it before in an interview or in an online discussion. In short, after experiencing these global dangerous situations, finally 25 years later, the partner Digimon spread to everyone in the world, which made it possible for the protagonists to meet in peace after a long absence. This is the last scene. It would be extremely difficult to describe just a small part of the process, and the plot would become very heavy, so I chose to use narration to simply describe "this road is not smooth." I think that's as far as it can go for a Sunday morning children's show. So what are the protagonists doing during this period? I also thought about it some.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the number of children with partner Digimon began to increase at an accelerated rate, and the protagonists could not remain idly by as they fell into danger. What begins as a campaign to protect the children could turn into a global run. They may be involved in various conflicts. Taichi, who has a high enough ability to overcome dangers, plays the role of solving the situation starting from local areas in this situation. Twenty-five years later, the profession that marks Taichi as an adult is diplomat, but that is not a profession limited to one country, just because I cannot find a good enough word to describe a person who stands for freedom and wants to bring peace and friendship. Due to his busy activities in many fields, he got married and had children later than his junior Daisuke, so Taichi's child in the final scene is almost the youngest. The last picture should let people understand that there is such a thinking experience behind it.
Also write about other characters’ situations. Not long ago, when the Partner Digimon spread to all humans and actually resolved many disputes, people began to study the cause of all this. Of course, Koushirou is also one of them. As evolution is understood more and more, the obstacles that stand in the way of evolution come to light. For example, this is also the reason why the Dark Masters  are extremely powerful, and this is also briefly mentioned in the novel version of Digimon Adventure. However, where does the force that hinders evolution come from? It seems to come from extraterrestrial sources. In order to find out the reason, we first needed to investigate the moon, so Yamato and Gabumon were chosen. Unlike ordinary investigations, no one knows the dangers of forces that impede evolution. Not all Digimon that become human partners can evolve into a complete Ultimate form. Digimon must have high combat capabilities and rich experience, and they must not be too big to be transported to the universe. In some cases, they must be able to travel in space. activities, so Yamato, who has such a Digimon as his partner, is one of the first suitable candidates. On the moon, Yamato said, "Next time it will be Jupiter." This was a tribute to "2001: A Space Odyssey" and wanted to show that this part is all about evolution. Before graduating from medical school, Joe senpai was responsible for the rear support of Taichi and the others, and participated in the activities of Doctors Without Borders in both the real world and the digital world. Sora, Mimi, and Hikari's final career was to ask female script writers to provide opinions. Before that, they must have supported them in the areas they were good at, such as the clothing and food of the children they were responsible for protecting. Among the juniors who were still students when Taichi and his friends officially started their activities, there was Daisuke who still wanted to eat delicious food everywhere. In response to the increasing number of crimes involving Digimon every year, Ken volunteered to join the police Digimon Countermeasures Section established at that time in order to prevent others from making the same mistakes he made. Watching Ken's activities, Iori realized that there was more to evil than just hatred, so he became a lawyer. Miyako and Takeru also have many other things to do, so they will wait for another opportunity to talk about it. We considered these plot points before finalizing the script. When I was working on the previous film that is now being released, I gave the producers a few months of handouts and simulations of who would be doing what in the 2010s, as well as simulations of the world situation, but none of it was used in the end. . seki P, who was talking in the chat room, was also present at the time. He must have heard that I said that the world would not be peaceful. Didn’t he remember it? As I said before, the purpose of this article is just to make it clear that the final scene of Episode 02 was made with many factors in mind. How the subsequent films were made is irrelevant. Maybe I will write more about Digimon Adventure and 02 at that time, but that's it for now.

Digimon Adventure 02 THE BEGINNING | Some thoughts on the retcons
Tumblr media
It is still kinda magical to me. Today is the official release of Digimon Adventure 02 The Beginning and me, in Germany, actually could see it on releaseday in cinema, instead of waiting like a year for it to make its way to either BluRay or ovr to Germany in general.
So, yeah, I just came back from Cinema and... I sure have thoughts.
Like in general: It was a very fine movie. Not great. But good enough. Felt more like an OVA, to be honest, and be it just because of the very short runtime. But... It was the first time since 2001 that I saw a Digimon movie in cinema. And did I start crying on the opening credits? You bet I did.
But... That's not what I wanna talk about. I wanna talk about the retcons.
Because boy, did the movie retcon a lot of stuff. I mean, technically it retconned basically the entire Adventure-verse base lore, the reason for the Chosen Children and of course the epilogue.
Also it completely retconned Digimon Adventure tri. - which, let's be honest, was probably the best call on their end.
Let me talk under the cut, just to make sure nobody gets spoiled who does not want to get spoiled.
So, the movie basically retcons the entire thing about the first chosen children (aka the stuff that tri. basically is build around), by... mostly ignoring they existed or at least moving them much, much closer to the events of Digimon Adventure, than what tri. had imagined.
Now the entire reason for the chosen children existing is, that one child made a wish in 1996, the wish leading to the events of the very first movie - and that of course leading to everything else within the timeline.
The child of course is the "first chosen child" the movie is about, Rui. This child per chance - or maybe in an attempt of the universe to create balance (more about that in a moment) - got partnered with Ukkumon, a Digimon that is at least implied to be linked to the Homeostasis. At least Ukkumon can make strong wishes into a reality. And Rui wishes to have friends who are like him. And because he is partnered with a Digimon, Ukkumon makes it that other children get partnered with Digimon, so that there are more children like Rui.
And, yeah, that one wish leads to everything else, to more and more children being paired with Digimon partners - until eventually every person on the world has a Digimon partner (which is what the epilogue said after all).
Now, I find the story with Rui interesting under the idea of balance.
Because... Well, the homeostasis is always kinda ill defined and runs into the same problems like Star Wars (like, yeah, Anakin brought balance to the force, just not in the way the Jedi expected). The show itself barely explains it, the novels go a bit more into it, then tri. is very chaotic about it and... that was it.
But in a way the situation with Rui seems to be very much about balance. Because you have this child, who is poor, whose father is comatose, who gets beaten and abused by a clearly overworked mother. And this child, who really has anything imaginable thrown at him, he gets his wishes fulfilled. Which weirdly enough brings a bit more balance into the world, right?
It is an interesting concept to use the homeostasis for. Way more interesting than "dark vs light".
Weirdly enough it also kinda fits very well with the idea behind the Adventure children, who were back then created around the idea of "children struggling with real world problems". While nobody is abused like Rui, they are mostly very much struggling. So, yeah, they are a lot like Rui in that regard.
It is also kinda funny. Digimon Adventure 02 went very strong originally (especially in the finale) on the "the digital world as a vehicle to fulfill wishes", which this again also takes up. And in a weird way the epilogue also took up in a ridiculous way. With the kids not only fulfilling their dreams, but doing it to a frankly stupid amount. Like, they do not only do what they wanted to do as kids, they are literally the most successful at it (except Miyako, who does not get a dream, she just gets to produce babies, ugh).
This also gets toned down here. While for the most part the chosen career paths are still mostly the same (with the big exception of Miyako) to what we saw in the epilogue, they are no longer "the best" in it. Daisuke just makes ramen, he does not need to have a worldwide ramen franchise, you know?
But yeah. There is of course the big one. In the epilogue every human has a Digimon partner. And... Well, Digimon Adventure 02 released in Germany in 2001. While I already knew the ending from the Japanese run (because I got first access to the internet, just two weeks before Digimon Tamers released in Japan), I do very much remember coming home from school on 9/11, wanting to watch Digimon and... well, 9/11 being on every single TV channel. So, one of my first thoughts even as a child was: "Wait, everyone gets a Digimon? Even the terrorists?" And I also wondered about the people, who do not want a Digimon.
Which very much is what this movie lands on, when they face the possibility of every person getting a Digimon partner.
Weirdly enough my adult self, 20 years later, is a lot less world weary, than my 12yo self. Because as an adult seeing this part of the epilogue retconned, I cannot help but wonder: "But maybe it would have been good, if everyone had a partner? Maybe it would have helped heal people?" But that might just be my idealism talking there.
So, yeah. It is a bit bittersweet to see this ending, that very much feels like a definite ending. (And really, I hope it is. Like, I know Digimon Adventure prints money, but maybe... just... let's move on?)
I don't know. I have a lot of complicated feelings right now about this, I have to say.
Just needed to ramble about this, I feel.

Digimon Adventure 02: Digital Partner - Final Thoughts
Okay, this one is a bit of an enigma. This is a Wonderswan "game" that's not much of a game. From what I can gather from the extremely sparse info on the internet, it exists more as a peripheral to other Digimon games. I started "playing" it to poke around and see if it was worth "completing," but...I don't think you can complete it?
The general concept for this one is just bizarre. You teach digimon words and then fight using those words. The game does not explain this very well. Also, the digimon all seem to speak perfectly good Japanese so why am I teaching them words to begin with? The only thing that I kinda thought seemed fun was that you can counter attack by playing shiritori (or "atamatori," which I didn't know existed) with the enemy digimon. You can also match the word's "genre" ("Apple" and "Orange" would both be in the fruit "genre.") This has potential but the execution was iffy. Additional thoughts below the cut.
Notes:
-The game starts with Gennai asking if you're a boy or girl (he assumes you're a boy at first lol). I was excited to play as a girl for once and pick my own name.
-You're supposed to beat the game within 8 in-game hours before the portal to your world closes. However, the goal of "communicating with digimon" is so vague, that I'm not sure if there's a way to fail?
-The world map is tiny and based on Digimon World. (Misty Trees, Infinity Mountain, Dragon's Eye Lake, etc.) There's also very little variety in the digimon you can speak to and the stuff they have to say. I think I spoke to like 4 different Elecmon and heard 3 Numemon say the same thing several times too (I only really played for an hour). The only things to do when entering a location are: talk to a digimon or fight a digimon.
-You can have 2 digimon in your "room" at a time. Your room is where you can check their stats and teach these partners words. Presumably they grow based on what you teach them and maybe digivolve? You can return digimon back to where they came from and pick up new ones. Unclear if they lose everything you taught them when you return them.
-Some random partner digimon are featured from the anime (most but not all). They all tell you that they've been "waiting for you." This kind of goes against the anime's one-digimon-per-chosen-child thing...guess I'm playing as a Mary Sue
-This game is in black and white, which is fine, but sometimes the map isn't detailed enough to figure out how to enter a place or what textures are supposed to be (it's hard to tell that the lake is a lake, for example).
-If nothing else, this game has cute character animations:
Tumblr media
-There is zero info online from people who have played this game (at least not in English). There's no English translation which is obviously a big part of that. No walkthroughs or playthroughs to give me context. I did see a thread where someone was mocked for asking for a walkthrough though, so I guess that tells you how much substance this one has
I might poke around a little more to see if I can get one of my digimon to digivolve or something, but I think I'm safe in skipping this one for the most part.

Digimon Adventure Fanfic
Hello, I'm shamelessly shilling my fanfic: Digimon Adventure: Dark Tidings. It's set post 02 following some original characters and following up on some of the plot points that 02 left hanging. It is canon complaint and sfw and uses dub terminology.
Months after the defeat of MaloMyotismon, American DigiDestined Daniel receives a message from the Digital World. Embarking on an adventure to find his missing brother in the Digital World, Daniel and his partner Blue the Dracomon will find themselves entangled in a larger plot where new threats are rising and old loyalties are questioned. If he and his new friends can't uncover the details and find the power within themselves, the fate of both worlds may come to an end.
So far 2 chapters are out and I've written up to chapter 6. Please check it out and give me some constructive criticism.

draceempressa "also ngl, Taichi's adventure from "another elementary shonen mc "all the way to "corporate slave who is still idealistic and maintain his individuality and idealism "is an interesting premise, considering in animangames, you just fade to the background when you matures. Taichi remaning as the mc and maintaning what he stands for wven as an adult is a nicd contrast to that, which ,i appreciate."
SEE, AND THIS IS WHAT I WANT FOR HIM. First and foremost, Kizuna didn't even display him as a corporate slave yet, but as a young adult without direction who had lost his way and played "performative adult" instead. A part of him had denied his past, his connection with Digimon and even his own partner - even if he STILL used the fighting as escapism in my opinion, because there he could still lead, still make an impact, still have control to some degree. And that is still making my heart ache, considering how much 02 and Tri showed us how much he always missed Agumon, how much he loved him and hated to see him hurt, corrupted, gone... Basically, he had to get in touch with himself again through the wake-up call that was Kizuna to find his true self (again).
I know a few Japanese artists have picked it up already and I love to imagine that Taichi will work part-time for Koushirou's company while getting his diplomat education done through the years - and that WILL take many years and there will be times when he'll hate everything about it. He will hate the government, he will hate the circumstances, he will hate the bureaucracy - and yet, at the same time, he will love enduring all of this, because he will finally know what he is doing it all for. Or rather - he will have found the answer in himself all along. As I said - you can get the kid out of the Digital World, but never the Digital World out of the kid.
And as much as I love to imagine it... I also want to SEE it, I want to see him thrive again. So badly.

how do u even start getting into Digimon?? there so much stuff, i dont even know where to begin. like, there is like a hundred shows??? do i start with the first one that came out??
Idk man it just happened??
No, but seriously, don't worry about it! There aren't even that many shows if you ask me. I'll put a list below the cut! I'll list all movies too, so it'll look like more than it really is. Also the dates are the japanese air dates.
Obviously starting with the first season, Digimon Adventure is an easy pick, it also has the most sequels and movies.
But aside from the Adventure related media, all other Digimon Seasons are completely self-contained, and you can just go and watch any! They also all explore "Digimon" and the Digital World in different ways. I personally loved them all.
For the anime I also highly recommend watching the Japanese original. I'm sorry for anyone who grew up with it, but I can barely stand watching the English Dub at all. If you know German though, the German Dub is really good. I still prefer the Japanese original, but the German Dub is at least a translation and not a fan fiction.
The same basically goes for the games. You can just pick any of them up! Also, all Digimon games kind of do their own thing in terms of gameplay and mechanics. There's similarities too, but usually each have their own vibe. A lot of the DS titles do work very similar though!
