THE ULTIMATE DINNER ROLLS: soft, fluffy, buttery and totally irresistible!

I did everything wrong and we still have edible rolls. These were supposed to be the Amish Dinner Rolls from @kingarthurbaking. But I was in a hurry and thought it said 1 cup of potato flakes, an ingredient in the Star bread I make all the time. It was supposed to be mashed potatoes in normal moist form. So the dough was super dry and not coming together. I realized my mistake and started adding water hoping that would do the trick. I ended up with a decent looking dough and started letting it rise. Then I read a lot of discussion of the recipe online and realized it should have been much wetter, but it was too late to add more water. So I let it rise, which it didn’t. At least not much. Then after about 2 hours’ rise, I started rolling the balls of dough, of which you are supposed to do 16-24. I made them too small and did 32. Then I set them to rise a second time, which they didn’t. At least not much. Then at 8pm, I baked them and waited for them to get golden. Which they didn’t. When I finally pulled them out, after about 25 minutes, I brushed them with unsalted butter and sprinkled some pink salt on them and we tried them. The boy loved them! And husband and I thought they were pretty good. Considering I thought they were going to rocks, this is pretty amazing. I think I’ll have to try them again, doing everything right next time. L99k at him! He's the runt of the batch but I'm gona love him forever, any ideas about the patern he's got?

I have not seen that kind of a pattern before, but it is quite adorable regardless.

That said, if he is the runt, be sure he gets adequate care- If he cannot get milk from his mother, you will need to consult your closest veterinarian to get milk replacement for boosting his immune system. If the pup cannot get to the mother's teat, be sure to help him get there, but if the mother rejects him or he simply cannot latch on, you will need to bottle-feed him, roughly every 2-3 hours.

You will need to keep the pup in a warm environment, especially now, during the winter. Being so small means it will not be able to keep itself warm, so consider a heating pad with a towel over it.

If the mother is rejecting the pup, you will also need to help him eliminate. After feeding, wipe its rear with a warm, damp cloth to prompt it to eliminate.

Be sure to check for hydration as well- Runts become dehydrated quickly. The above problems are much less of a concern if the mother is willing to care for it, but this one is necessary even if the mother is caring. The usual check for dehydration works- Pinch the skin, and if it pops back instantly, then it is fine, but if it remains pinched, it is dehydrated. Fortunately, Fidough are much easier, and can be easily determined if they are dehydrated just from touch, due to feeling dry and flaky.

Be sure to weigh him every day. Also, be sure to bring him in to a veterinary clinic to have him assessed, as there is much I cannot tell from a picture over the Internet.
