I actually have quite a lot of feelings on what makes a pattern 'beginner' or not, with embroidery. I'm not really quite sure how I would class a beginner pattern vs advanced patterns, because a lot of the skill in embroidery comes down to like. not the finishing it, but executing it. So I tend to see beginner patterns as ones from makers who don't hate beginners I guess. Have ample resources and advice on what colors to use, what materials to pick, stuff like that.

I consider a wide variety of stitches to be important early on so that the stitcher can learn what they like about embroidery. I often don't go super textured on my work I post here! But I'm also not trying to learn thread tension anymore. I can work embroidery faster than a lot of people, and my speed is something that marks me as pretty advanced - I already have various stitches committed to muscle memory and can pull them out. But I think one of the worst things a newbie can do is try to learn stitches before they even start. The process of embroidering is how you learn embroidery because you're building muscle connections and dexterity. You can see your progress as you go, as a newbie. It's pretty normal to see first timers online go: wait you can physically see the section I started in and then how I improved as I went. Because you went and made a thing and learned through doing! That's fucking rad.

Murderbot Discord Server - Transit Hub

For those who are new to The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells (and to those who are not new, too!), I'd like to post an invitation to our Discord server "Murderbot Transit Hub", currently run by myself and @broken-risk-assessment-module.

There are multiple Discord servers for the fans of Murderbot, but our server is created aiming to be beginner friendly. It has separate channels for each book, so that people can join at any point and have discussion without having to worry about seeing spoilers for the books you have not read yet. It is also a gateway to other servers, as it has links to many of them.

Currently, we are planning to start audiobook listening-along events for Exit Strategy. (We have done ASR, AC, and RP so far.) Basically, we stream one chapter per week, and people can just listen, participate in text-chat, share their thoughts in the relevant channel, etc.

New Murderbot Discord Server Launch

Hello, fellow Murderbot fans!

This is a post to announce that we are starting a new Discord Server where we can talk about "The Murderbot Diaries" series by Martha Wells.

There are already several excellent discord servers, big and small, in existence, but our emphasis is to be beginner-friendly, and has a relatively narrow focus on the book series.

All are welcome, including:

People who have just finished the first book and want to talk about just that book, without spoilers for subsequent books

People who have just started to read and are still confused

People who have never used Discord before and are a little worried about the protocols there

People who need to look up all these abbreviations, like 'lmao', 'artmb', 'ship', 'tmbd', etc. (I know I did...)

People who love the series and want to talk with people who are new to refresh their take

People who love tmbd and are happy to interact with newcomers

We consider our server like a hub-station for beginners (thus, named "Murderbot Transit Hub"). Find footing before joining other servers with more defined characteristics. With kind permissions by owners/moderators of other Murderbot discord servers, we have a page where you can find the descriptions and invitations to other servers, too.

There are no protocols with this new server - except

"if in disagreement, just agree to disagree - excercise tolerance and accept diverse views".

I myself am new to tmbd, Tumblr, Discord etc. (all from this year...), so, I am not a confident moderator. But I love to interact with people and talk about The Murderbot Diaries (TMBD).

Fortunately, the server is created and set up by a lot more experienced @crabs-brencil, so we are in safe hands!

Being on stage is a lot of fun! Even though I’m nervous around people, I don’t feel it as much on stage. My secret is that the stage lights are so bright that I can’t see the audience! Performing for people here is much scarier because I can see their reactions, but I do my best to keep my cool.

As for hobbies, I’ve recently started learning plant magic gardening! One of my siblings gave me this plant to look after that was nearly dying, so I healed it helped it make a full recovery with the appropriate care. Now I have a pet plant! I don’t know what type of plant it is yet, but I’m excited to find out! I’m probably going to ask around to see if anyone else has any sick plants they don’t want anymore. What do you think I should name this one?

(Shoutout to Moss from @askthedreamyversegang for teaching Cosmo magic! He knows one and a half spells and is far too excited about it.)
