The levels of pettiness it's takes for Jack to go back to patient and tell him he will do the surgery that he previously said he wouldn't because it would most likely kill him just because Sneed told him not to is so freaking hilarious oh my gosh I love this talented moron

period dramas to watch if you liked My Lady Jane (or period dramas in general)
1. The Artful Dodger
Tumblr media
Jack and Belle are basically Jane and Guildford if they were Australian and..blonde?
it's set in 1850s Australia and heavily features medicine in the plotline as Jack is a surgeon and Belle aspires to be one. Its central plotline and romance are top-tier.
2. The Great
Tumblr media
Catherine and Peter had the same love x hate that Jane and Guildford did.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, The Great is a WONDERFUL show and more people need to be introduced to the hope and anguish. The Great is set in 18th-century Russia and follows the rise of Catherine the Great and the show is kind of a dark comedy.
3. Dickinson
Tumblr media
like MLJ this is a rewriting of history, specifically the character of Emily Dickinson, and the main couple is so easy to root for!
Dickinson follows Emily's life and her relationship with Sue in 19th-century society. it incorporates modern language, music, and references within the universe, to explore the constraints of gender and sexuality at the time.

Hey, here’s a bunch of things I watched recently that you should too
Bottoms (Lesbian fight club, absurd asf, hilarious AND had my pookie bear Ruby Cruz)
Willow TV series (continuation of the movie, fantasy, magic, lesbian princess/knight 😱, canonically gay Disney princess 😱)
Lisa Frankenstein (I have enough posts and reblogs about it.)
Yellowjackets (New Jersey!, cannibalism, plane disaster, lgbt+ representation, soccer team = queer coded)
Renegade Nell (colonial England, evil (but not really) gingers, silly con artists, magic 😱)
The Artful Dodger (Oliver Twist continuation, Victorian Medicine, Victorian Australia, Peter Pan and Remus Lupin are Dodger and Fagin)
Last two can be found on Disney+ but I recommend using Movierr for any of these cause Disney supports Israel (BOOO)
sooo… I recommend it.

one thing i do like that the artful dodger does (i couldn’t tell if it was intentional at first, but seven episodes in i believe it is!) is that, yeah, sure belle is “innovative” or whatever but the only reason she needs to be is because her family is the one preventing innovation (and the only reason she Gets to be is because of who she is). charlie only got injured because she was taking a carriage to the hospital. ether is banned because her father said so. the hospital is a cesspool because of who her father appointed head surgeon. people are killed in raids approved by her father. every single problem in this show is caused by the upper class.
i feel like a lot of times shows like this have a “cynical worldly sad” paired with “hopeful” - but this show shows time and time again that jack’s “cynicism” is 1. very earned and 2. not really cynicism at all. it’s care for his patients. experiments aren’t worth it if the patient dies/suffers unnecessarily. and belle’s “hope” is not actually hope - it’s naivety and privilege (which isn’t inherently bad but she’s not painted as the Ideal between the two). jack doesn’t need to change his outlook - he needs a system overhaul. “your family are the real thieves” is really the crux of the show in many ways. it hits as hard as it does because it’s saying out loud what the show has been hinting at the entire time.

I thought that it was stupid that Brandon Sanderson had the narrator of Tress of the Emerald Sea call all the unnamed sailors "Dougs" when he could have just called them, you know, sailors. But then I started using the term. Turns out having a word for "yes, we know that realistically all these individuals have unique identities and personalities, but they're not the focus of this story so we're going to treat them as faceless background characters" is surprisingly useful.
