On Headcanon

Were you sitting at work today? Home? And suddenly that thought popped into your head, a little scene playing out about Copia, or Terzo, or Secondo, or Primo. A thought that filled you with excitement, butterflies dancing in your belly, which had you smiling because yes, in the world that makes you happy, that is what they are like. That is what they do. That is what they say. It's an amazing thing and it's good and okay, and you should be excited about it. Because you just added another chapter to the amazing story in your head. And you decide to post about it, but...someone left you an anon. Someone left you a comment. Someone vague posted. And it hurt.

This is happening far too often across tumblr, and it needs to come to a close. I understand that we all have vastly different ideas of who the Papas are and how the Ministry works, but that does not give a single one of you an excuse to say anything untoward or foul to anyone else on this platform. And this isn't talking about any particular group because more often than not, posts like this are used to justify the actions of others. You do not have permission to use this to further your agenda. Be kind. Choose to ignore that fic. Choose to stay off that person's blog. Stop making posts at the expense of others just because you don't like a particular aspect of their world.

On F! Reader and x Reader Fic

I have seen many posts since I joined tumblr to write for the Ghost fandom that express a dislike toward reader fics, and in particular f! reader fics. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'd like to just reflect on my own thoughts on the matter, and once again, I appreciate the time taken to read and perhaps understand where I'm coming from, and know that it is a place of care.

I am a woman. When I write fic, I am writing it to satisfy my own little world in my head. So naturally, I am going to make the reader female, because the universal you is not only the friends I share it with or those kind enough to read, but the you is me. Every sweet word whispered, or gentle touch from a Papa is something I wish would happen to me.

I do not have the right to invade someone else's perspective. I do not understand what it is to be a gay man. I do not understand what a trans person experiences every day, and therefore, I do not feel like it is my place to write these perspectives in an x reader fic, or more so than that, in smut. And otherwise, I'm just not comfortable in doing so. I know my experience, and isn't the first step of writing, writing what you know?

I want there to be inclusivity in writing, but that doesn't start with attacking other authors for writing from their own perspective. It doesn't start with making hostile posts about reader fics, because what's the outcome? You just end up with some people very hurt and unwilling to post their stories because they think it's unwanted.

If you feel comfortable exploring these topics, talk to your mutuals. Say hey, what can I do to gain a better understanding of the content that I'm writing? What can I do to ensure that I'm not fetishizing due to my lack of knowledge? Be a community, and help each other out.

On Notes and Reblogs

A note is not the value of your writing. Whether you receive just a few or hundreds, you have impacted someone. Someone loved your story. Someone is thinking about your story all day. Someone was able to make it through because that one thing line you wrote spoke volumes to them.

We put so much of our energy into worrying about notes that the reason we started writing in the first place is lost. It becomes a chore. There are a hundred WIPs sitting in our folders because it becomes so goddamn painful just to work on one.

No one owes you a reblog. No one owes you a like. And even though it's nice, and it's gratifying to see nice comments on something you worked hard on, notes cannot be used as a currency between followers or mutuals. It just becomes a poison. Your entire tumblr experience is going to be marred by the constant worry that you aren't good enough just based on a number.

Learn to appreciate the ones who do read. Allow your story to make you feel good because there it is! That thing you've been thinking about. It's written down. You brought it to life. That is far more valuable than a tumblr note.

hello liv! thank you for your service to the fandom, i spend such an inordinate amount of time sifting through all your reclists! i’ve been seeing drarry authors do their first line/last line posts for patterns and was wondering how that might pan out for reccers, so i had a question for you— what are some of the fics you find yourself reccing most often, across lists? do they speak to your own tastes? does a pattern emerge through them about the kind of asks you get? you always rec a really diverse range of fics but i do see some recurring favourites cropping up and was wondering if you had thoughts on it!

Thank you for your kind words and for the ask, anon! This was a very interesting way to adapt that ask game to my blog and I appreciate you for including me 💜 I had to take a minute and think about this because despite knowing that I’ve recced some fics over and over across lists, I’ve never stopped to analyze it in detail. Taking a quick look, I’ve tried to identify some patterns and I think these examples offer interesting insights:

1) I Am Not Who I Became and A Sword Laid Aside - two long fics I mention a lot (often alongside each other) because they combine some very popular tropes: recluse & powerful Harry, competent Draco, forced proximity, fast smut + slow emotional burn, D/s undertones

2) Clear as Mud and Unfinished Business are two personal faves I don’t see in rec lists often, they’re more like old-ish hidden gems and I love getting the chance to sneakily include them!

3) Take the Moon and Life goes not Backward: two favourites written by my friends! Funnily enough, they’re both kid fics which is a trope I don’t really care for lol. Reccing friends is one of my biggest pleasures in fandom, I’ve seen a lot of criticism/questioning around it which makes absolutely no sense to me - appreciating each other’s work and finding things in common is what brings us together in the first place 🤷🏻‍♀️

The main reason why I include any fic on a list is because I believe it’s a good fit. I always try to get a sense of what the reader is looking for bc it helps me find the right tone, but it can also get challenging if the request is too vague or too specific. Because I publish lists on demand I try to be as trope agnostic as possible, but at the end of the day I can only rec what I’ve read and enjoyed, so this will always be a subjective process (which I love! Imo rec lists are special and unique exactly because they are personal).

Back to the pattern discussion, I think seeing the same works mentioned on a regular basis reflect not only my own preferences but the ways it matches some emerging trends among the readers who follow me. Now the blog’s been around for a while and I don’t rec as much as I used to, it’s fair to assume that those who stick around have found in my blog similar tastes and fandom approach. In the last couple years I’ve noticed more requests around themes such as powerful Harry, competent Draco, bi and gay awakening, or fics where they take care of each other, bond over shared trauma and redeem or heal together. I think those reading trends are largely influenced by writing trends and vice-versa (especially in the Tumblr bubble!) so in a way we’re all collectively setting those trends and de-constructing or giving new meanings to old perspectives. That’s the true transformative power of fandom! Love that for us 🙌

I'm also so confused as to how this is what the fandom is known for. We have some good fics, we have hella good art, we have a M U S I C A L , and then the first thought people have of the Ham fandom is Miku Binder Third President Founding Fucker Slaveowner Thomas Jefferson.

I also find it kind of offensive (almost put insluting oh my ufckjg-) that they made a founder become this but like he'd probably be really pissed so please keep fucking up his memory lmao he deserves it

So like, I just remembered: it kinda romanticizes these guys??? The musical??? so like don't get me wrong i love the music but... it puts them into this light. This pink light. It paints Hamilton as an abolitionist who was outspoken about it. Once you're done gaining your second term and out of office, they can't do shit to it or your presidency, since it's over.

But then again I find men not knowing they'd make it down into the history books for starting the world's global power and the world's economic powerhouse pretty interesting. My Thoughts on the Alastor Ace Erasure rampant in the Hazbin Hotel Fandom

Disclaimer i am one Ace and don't speak for all Ace's when I say the fandoms treatment of Alastor makes me uncomfortable. I was and still am open to shipping alastor with other characters. But the constant Acephobia and Ace Erasure I see in this shipping content is to a point where I have to point it out.

First off I'm so tired of the "loopholes" folks list off for why they want to write smut with one of the only cannon ace characters we've gotten in years. I had to blacklist "nonsex repulsed asexual alastor" on ao3 because they aren't even bothering to list him as greysexual. Sure an ace can have sex with a partner once or twice. But they act like nonsex repulsed means the ace person can be written having sex every other chapter. AT THAT POINT IT'S NOT AN ASEXUAL PERSON ANYMORE.

At this point I'd honestly prefer it if they just said their fic au is that he's a homosexual. Because half the time them trying to work in "he's still ace guys! he's just also okay with doing a different sex position for each day of the week!" just comes off as Acephobic. And the few times they write him uncomfortable with the start of the sex it just sounds like Acerape or corrective rape. "He just doesn't know he likes it cause he's a virgin." or "he's uncomfortable until this partner starts making him feel good". The WORST ones are the "heat" fics where they have alastor think about if he had proper control of his body he wouldn't want to be having sex right now. because at that point it's just a date rape drug and they are using a fanfic trope to FORCE him to have sex against his will. And it's just so fucked up man.

Yes he is only confirmed as Ace and not Aro. Viv is intentionally not saying he's Aro because she knows it's a lost cause to tell the fandom he's not romantically into people. Because fandom will ship him regardless. So she prioritized making it clear he's at the very least Ace in cannon and there's no plans to give him a partner in cannon. I feel like the HuskDust bits in the final series is because she saw how much the fans shipped alastor and angeldust after the pilot. Alastor was locked in as Ace by the time the pilot was released and she said it on multiple streams afterwards that he would be Ace. Giving AngelDust a different love interest target just seems like the easiest way to shoot down the biggest Alastor ship at the time without saying she's doing it to sink the biggest alastor ship. Of course fans just latched onto Vox and Lucifier but made it worse by feeling the need to say Alastor's ace before putting him in a sexual situations anyway.

Sexuals have thousands of cannon sexual characters to choose from, from countless other series but they feel the need to fight to make the one Ace guy have sex. We get an Ace character and fans immediately try to work around it to still write smut with him. Aces can't even have one character. I'm looking up fics about a psychopath cannibalistic serial killer because he's the only Ace rep I've seen in years that isn't just fan headcannons and I'm getting punched in the face with so much Acephobia and corrective rape, it's horrifying. Aces can't go through the tag of a cannon ace comfort character without facing triggering amounts of acephobia. And that's just wrong. How can the fandom see this as okay??

If he was a gay character constantly being written into a straight ship with people excusing it as "well sometimes gay guys will have sex with women" people would be up in arms about gay erasure. But because it's an Ace character that they personally want to still ship with characters it's not Ace erasure. He's just an Ace that likes to have lots and lots of sex.

ALASTOR IS ASEXUAL. If you are in anyway trying to write Alastor in character or close to cannon. Then he does not desire sex that is the basic definition of Asexual. But yall can't except this tumblr sexy man doesn't want to have sex (because everyone wants to have sex\s). So you bend over backwards trying to explain to an actual Ace person why we are sometimes pushed or pressured into sex and how that's okay. How it's okay for you a not Ace person to write this Ace character being forced into sexual situations. Because "sometimes" Aces have sex. You're right we do sometimes have sex. I'm not saying everyone has to write Alastor as a virgin. But he's had sex once or twice in the last 80 years at most. It's more likely he's gone the last 80 years without any desire to have sex at all. So to go from that to suddenly having sex even once a week is too much sex for him to suddenly put up with. God my Ace brain can't even wrap my head around having sex every week (do you sexuals really do that?). And I haven't gone 80 years free from sexual expectations. To expect Alastor to magically be open to a bunch of sex is ignorant at best. Regardless of what character or ocfemalereadersona you try to push him to have sex with.

I don't know what else to say other than that i'm just tired. Tired and sad. The Ace community should be celebrating the fact that we finally have another Ace character in media. A character the show and creator have openly and constantly confirmed is Ace. But instead we are having to defend ourselves from our own terminology being weaponized against us to erase that characters Ace identity for smut fics.

How would you describe your writing style?

Just yesterday I was talking to my beloved fátima and I was telling her that I write by chance, not by choice. Basically it's like no thoughts just vibes, if inspiration strikes and I'm in the mood to do it, I do it, because I think better when I write stuff down. It's insane and I know it sounds ridiculous but it's completely true, I don't consider myself a good writer at all and I just do it because I enjoy it most of the time or because I needed to say something. That's basically it 😅

Do you have a guilty pleasures in fic (reading or writing)?

I'm a sap. The sappier, the better. I want everything overflowing with romance. I really do like my teeth-rotting fluff. And I feel like I can't write without it, like, it has to be romantic or I die. There's also a specific brand of smut that makes me weak in the knees always and I do enjoy my a/b/o tropes a little too much to be healthy.

Any fanfic tropes you can’t stand?

Huh. This is a tough one because I read pretty much everything! Maybe I don't entirely enjoy the concept of a character switching genders for convenience purposes, like, making one of them female just for the sake of not writing gay stuff? Maybe that's the one.

And I'll admit the whole y/n thing threw me off immensely when I got into the f1 fandom, but now I just don't mind it, and I've read some cool self-insert fics since. Oh! The biggest pet peeve in this trope is the "face claim" thing, because if it's a self insert then imagine yourself in the fic, right. But that would be it.

Is there a story you’ve written that doesn’t seem to get much love?

I'm pretty aware of the fact that people don't tend to read many wips but man, the way my charlos!actors au fic (can't wait to soar) is getting sidelined is making it tough to write in general. And it's not even about the hits, the hits are solid and so are the kudos, but people simply don't leave comments on it and it's like... what am I doing wrong? you know? It's a little frustrating, to be honest. Though I do know that how we engage with media has changed, blabla, but it doesn't stop it from stinging a little bit. Which is why I always encourage people to reblog on Tumblr when they can and leave comments when they can because it really does make a difference in a writer's psyche.

I just wish it had a bit more engagement (but actual engagement beyond likes and kudos) because sometimes people comment ideas that they have about the story and things they want to see on them and that's where I draw inspiration from. Sometimes the muse runs out and you end up just going with vibes only and people help with that if they comment. That's the biggest issue with my writing style, sometimes I'm just in a dry spell and don't know what to do with my life, so I turn to the comments to see if people want to see something. And I write that something because they've inspired me to do so.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

374 total, as of right now. a good 200 of those are pacific rim fanfics, of which at least 70% are promptfills, because i used to be a fairly heavy promptfic writer.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

currently, exactly 1,309,300 words, but this will definitely grow—i tend to write between 150k-250k per year, depending on how things go (last year i hit an all-time high at 300k). i've written more total, but that's the amount that i've written since 2017 and not deleted.

3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

always! even if it's just a simple "thanks for the comment, i'm glad you liked it!" because comments mean so much to me and i want commenters to know that.

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I loved, I loved (I lost) i think? it's funny, because i love writing angst, but i rarely write things with a solidly unhappy ending—i almost always at least leave something on a hopeful note. no idea how this fic holds up because i wrote it ages ago now and my writing skills have definitely improved.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

what qualifies as "happiest"? i think this really varies from person to person. that said, my personal favourite ending of things i've written recently would have to be in nie huaisang and the no good, very bad day, which ends with 1. jin guangshan's head being cut off, and 2. poor huaisang fainting, just because i think it's hilarious as hell.

7. Do you write crossovers?

not really—i used to, but these days, i tend to write fusions more. i just don't particularly feel the drive for characters from different media to meet each other, and prefer to blend settings or worldbuilding instead. that said, i would like to write a zmyx/dmbj crossover, because i think a dmbj door would be wicked.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

not as much since i switched to mainly posting on ao3, but i used to, yeah. most of it was very repetitive and boring and unimaginative, but a while back someone called me a f*g hag for writing an entirely sfw fic and accused me of getting off to gay male sex and i was just sat there like goddamn. none of what you said is even close to the mark. i deleted it (it was anon on ffnet, and thankfully i had my settings configured to let me delete anon comments), but i do have a screenshot saved somewhere, i think, just because it was so absurd.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

ehhhhh? not really?? this is complicated because like, i have written a few fics with smut, but i wouldn't really say i write smut. when i have written it it's almost always been very vague, for a variety of reasons, and in service of the narrative. i'm just not particularly interested in smut, and don't read it, either.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

not to my knowledge, but i would hope that if it were to happen, my readers would let me know. i have a specific line in my ao3 bio that states that if my works are found anywhere but on my ao3, tumblr, or ffnet, then it's stolen and reposted without my permission to cover my bases.

11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

i had someone ask if they could translate a fic of mine years ago, but as far as i'm aware nothing came of it—i was very honoured, though!

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

i have! only one traditionally co-written, but it was an interesting experience. i'm not certain i could do it again, just because it requires a lot of coordination and effort.

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

pingpangxie/tiesanjiao (romantic)...............they have set up an entire shopping mall in my mind, and i adore them deeply.

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

i don't think i have any wips on ao3 that i really want to complete, but i guess if we consider all my wips, the sun telling the same lies about how beautiful the world is, which is my sunrise sha hai parallel. i've been tinkering with the outline for a bit now, but i have yet to actually start writing it, but i care about it so much and want it to be written so badly, because there's so many fun things in both worldbuilding and canon changes that i've got prepared.

15. What are your writing strengths?

i'm a very descriptive writer! people have told me that my writing is very immersive because of this, and it makes me very happy, because i love describing things. also, not something most people comment on, but i love putting layers of meaning into every writing choice i make—especially lately, my writing is all blue curtains, as it were.

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

i have been known to love a massive paragraph, alas. my record so far is a 500+ word paragraph. i only would say it's a weakness because sometimes it can get hard to remember the point of the paragraph, but i'm skilled enough that i usually do fine.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

depends; if i speak the language, then maybe, but usually, i write dialogue in english......................but that said, all the dialogue i write for cdramas/cnovels is technically written in chinese in my mind and then translated into english in my writing, which is why sometimes i'll make references to the phrasing that only works when you consider the chinese version of what is said.

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

on ao3, warriors! this is probably the first fandom i ever write anything for, actually, but anything i wrote pre-2016 either only exists in hard copy, or has been deleted.

19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?

i have so many baihe ships i want to write for but i have yet to finish a single goddamn novel so unfortunately i can't actually do that. however i am planning on doing a baihe writing challenge for march since it's my birth month, so hopefully i'll get at least some writing done in that vein (it'll probably be yunze chuan and shuang jing heavy since those are the things i've actually finished, but i'd like to write something for fgep, ruzhui, etc).

20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written

not a fanfic, but a series: sunrise ‘verse! if i had to choose an individual fic i'd probably struggle a lot, i like so many of them! so i'm putting a series here :) this is my proudest achievement and my favourite world i've come up with. i have so much lore behind this and so many things i want to do with this, and it's a series i've done a lot of experimental things with and plan to do more experimental things in the future, and i think it's really pushed me as a writer.

I also once had a pretty big b*tjokes writer comment on an old fic (like three or four years after I'd written it, when I was no longer In The Fandom) claiming I'd stolen their ideas and needed to either remove my work or credit them despite. only having read a few of their works very briefly. the work of mine in Question being a prompt fill. and me just following a lot of the trends of the fandom at the time? like sorry you don't actually have a trademark on hurt/comfort sick fics buddy it's a Fairly Popular Concept. anyway yeah that's about it.

I don't think I've fully written or published any crossovers, however! every character I've ever liked has been thrown into a killjoys au in my brain at one point or another (including but not limited to: the scooby doo gang, the penumbra pod gang, the eos 10 gang, Cecil and Carlos wtnv, ect). myself and jon plotted a whole magnus archives/mst3k au that I Wish one of us had written, and another mst3k/the mechanisms au that started as a joke and become so insanely important to us it sincerely helped us get together as a couple. we also had an overall eos10/penumbra podcast crossover that I personally never wrote anything for but I think jon Started some unpublished fics that never got finished.

honestly I'm kind of past the point of hoping to get back into writing due to. complete lack of willpower. but I wish I'd gotten round to writing the third trans Hardy fic I had planned at one point </3

idk!! I think I'm good at capturing like. very specific moments of domesticity and comfort. and I think when I'm imagining A Scene I'm quite good at getting the vibes of that scene across. but other than that I'm really not sure

oh god uhh. actually writing. linking scenes together. Plot other than just vague "here's two characters hanging out and existing". the list goes on

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I don't think I've actually attempted it myself? due to most characters I've written have been. incredibly British. I will say a pet peeve of mine in Reading a fic is when it is a fic in 99% English that'll have a large chunk of dialogue in another language, without a translation available somewhere for it. like a word or two is fine but if there's some actual plot in there and you're expecting me to Google translate it, that feels kind of the same as when subtitles simply say (speaking french) or whatever instead of Telling Us What They're Saying
