Birth (Andrew DeLuca x Amber Karev Imagine)
Previous Part Here
Tumblr media
Age Rating: 12+
Chapters: Two of Two
Fandom: Grey’s Anatomy
Head canon Ship: Andrew DeLuca x Amber Karev (Alex Karev’s Sister)
AN: Here’s the final chapter for the story you guys and I will try to post the next one as soon as I can and until then enjoy and I always appreciate and like and a reblog!
Editors Note: Hey guys so I just learned how to make GIF’s and decided to reblog this beautiful chapter with a GIF I made myself. Let me know what you think.
Summary: Amber gives birth to a girl with Andrew by her side and Dr. Montgomery delivering.
Words: 1441
Simone Griffith stands outside Amber DeLuca’s delivery room peeking through the transom on the closed door. It’s been six hours since she and DeLuca found out Amber was in labor. She was curious on how her chief resident was after her water broke causing Dr. DeLuca to have her close after his surgery and couldn’t help but go up and see how they are.
Also, after witnessing her grandmother have an Alzheimer’s episode, she wanted a reminder that there were good things in this world too, like babies being born. Alex Karev walks down the hall with a welcome home baby girl gift basket from him and Jo to give to Amber. He spots Griffith outside the room and clears his throat causing her to stand back and look at him.
“Dr. Karev hi I-I was just uh-”
“Spying on my sister while she’s trying to bring a new life into this world right this second?”
“…It looks weird, doesn’t it?”
“Yes!” Alex confirms causing her to look down in shame, “Is there a reason you’re doing this very weird thing?”
“I just…I just needed a reminder that there’s good things in this world too. And watching a birth happen in real time works more effectively than faith in humanity videos.”
Alex grins at that understanding where she’s coming from, “Yeah there is something magical about my baby sister becoming a mother.”
“That is all I am saying sir.” He motions for her to step aside and she does so. He walks inside the room to find Amber lying on her side in her bed with Dr. Montgomery behind her inserting the epidural catheter. Andrew is standing by her side and holding her hand as she groans at the needle insertion.
“Hey kid how are we doing?”
“Terrible! You’re lucky your ex-girlfriend knows what she’s doing otherwise I would judge her based on her poor choices from sleeping with you.” Alexs eyes widen at his sister’s knowledge of his and Addison’s past relationship. Andrew looks at him in shock as well just learning about this.
“Is this true or is it the hormones talking?”
Addison finishes the insertion and looks up at Alex in disgust, “You told her?”
“No! I swear I didn’t.”
Amber groans and lays on her back on the bed, “Oh please the nurses keep tabs on your love lives and they love to gush with me. They could write romance best sellers with Alex’s disaster of a love life. I mean I’m still at the Ava/Rebecca chapter and it is a doozy.” She turns to Addison, “For the record you could’ve done way better back then.”
“You know I’m in the room, right?” Alex points out before putting the pink basket on the table.
“I’m gonna check how dilated you are.” Addison sighs and feels the need to clarify to Amber while she does her cervix exam, “And for the record I didn’t date him. I found him attractive, I was horny and he was there. It was one time and I judge myself for it enough as it is.”
“I’m his sister I know how shameful you’d feel sleeping with him when he was an intern and an asshat.”
Addison grins at that and looks back at Alex, “I like her.”
Andrew asks trying to comprehend it, “Wait you slept with your sister’s OB and you didn’t think to mention it?”
“You slept with my sister and I had to find out after the fact.” Alex bitterly points out.
“I didn’t even know she was your sister man.”
“And I didn’t think my ex was gonna be delivering my sister’s baby over ten years later but here we are.”
Amber inhales and exhales in annoyance at their petty squabble, “Hey boys?” They turn to her and she looks disheveled while Addison checks her cervix, “I need you two to read the room because I have enough on my plate right now, I don’t need to mediate an argument between my husband and brother.” They quiet and look at her concerned as she continues, “I am just trying to squeeze a giant Escalada out of a compact FUCKING PARKING SPOT!” The boys look scared by her last exclamation.
“Very good.” Addison calmly says, “Swearing helps a lot, you’re at 7 centimeters.” Addison stands back up covering Amber with a blanket.
“Ugh I hate you tell me when I can start pushing this sucker out. Speaking of suckers exiting, Alex get out.” He looks offended by that as Amber continues, “You dropped off the gift and unless you can transport my daughter out of my body you are useless to me. And do me a favor. Let it be known that the only people allowed in this room are Dr. Montgomery and the people who provided genetic material to this baby otherwise they are gonna be in a world of hurt, now out!” Amber points at the door causing Alex to nod and pat Andrew on the back seeing the road ahead of him.
“God speed.”
Andrew nods, “Yeah.” Alex gets out of the room and closes the door behind him.
TWO HOURS LATER
I scream out loud as the next contraction comes and push per Dr. Montgomery’s instructions. While this happens, Andrew is by my side holding me encouraging me. My lower region is covered by blue tarps with Addison behind the curtain delivering my daughter, out of all of us I think she has the easiest job in the room because Andrew is no doubt in pain from me holding his hand with monster strength that’s coming from being in labor.
“Good Dr. DeLuca! Okay at the next contraction I’m gonna need you to really bear down but not until I tell you.”
I whimper at the never-ending cycle, “Oh god come on! I know my brother rejected you but don’t take it out on me!”
Andrew rubs my arm to soothe me, “It’s gonna be okay, you’re doing great, it’ll be over soon.”
I am too in pain and too mad at him to take in his soothing words, “If you think we’re having sex again after this you got another thing coming Andrew DeLuca!”
He chuckles at that and kisses the top of my head wiping the sweat off my forehead, “I think we’re stalled in the sex department until this kid goes off to college.”
I chuckle lightly at that but then I stop and gasp as I feel another contraction coming, “Oh god not again!” I scream as the pain courses through my body.
“Okay one last push Amber!” Dr. Montgomery instructed me and even though it hurts I do as she says, pushing with all my might. Andrew is holding me and encouraging me to push through my piercing screams. After what seems like forever, I feel relief in my body and slump back down on the bed panting for breath. I hear a baby crying and I felt my heart stop as I look down to see Dr. Montgomery holding our small, wriggling and bloody daughter already crying her lungs out. Addison is smiling and laughing in joy, “There she is!”
I’m so shocked by what’s happening I’m laughing and crying at the same time, “Oh my god.”
I can see Andrew laughing in joy too with tears glistening in his eyes, “Look at her oh my god you did that.”
“You helped.” I remind him. He takes the scissors from Dr. Montgomery and cuts the umbilical cord. After that Addison takes the baby to get her cleaned up and comes back a few moments later with our baby daughter wrapped in a baby blanket. She’s crying on the way until she reaches my arms and I hold her shocked at how tiny she is. I smile down at her still overcome with so much love and awe over this tiny human that made the last eight hours of pain I’ve endured so worth it, “Hi. Oh my god she’s…she’s…”
“She’s perfect.” Andrew finishes and I nod as he smiles. I can see the love in his eyes and grin at him.
“Here let’s go to daddy.” I carefully place the baby in Andrew’s arms and he handles her so carefully, no doubt shocked at how light she is too. He croons at the baby speaking words of affection in Italian cradling her head, “Ciao bambina, sono tua mamma e tuo papà.”
I sniffle and grin at the sight of both of them before cooing at our daughter, “Hi welcome to the world. Right now your the only pure and innocent thing in it at this very moment. And I promise we are gonna name you by the time you come home.” Andrew chuckles at that and we just enjoy this moment together as a family.

…………………………………………………………………
Of course, Jo was avoiding Arizona.
The second Jo heard that she would be visiting she planned accordingly. Arizona was there to teach the interns about the work at the Robbins-Herman Foundation, and both Surgery and OB residents and interns were required to attend. Carina thought she would be excited, as she was excited to see Arizona, but Jo wasn't.
Therefore, she was unable to escape it, even by trying to fake an emergency. Arizona wanted her up front to help her present and Jo did her best at trying to remain back especially as she and Carina talked. She ultimately ran away the second the presentation was done, avoiding all small talk with Arizona.
She had strategically stacked her schedule with a general surgery she knew was outside of Arizona's specialty.
She didn't want to see Arizona, she didn't want to talk to her, to hear the word she would say, she didn't even want to think of her being in the building. Until Melina went into labor.
Jo had promised Melina she'd be there to deliver her daughter as she had a cleft palate. She worked really hard to get a report with her and get her to trust her and the hospital. Melina's previous baby had died because of a medical error and up until her baby had been diagnosed with a cleft palate she had refused to deliver in a hospital.
So Jo of course stepped in the second Melina was in labor.
“You're doing great Melina, just a couple more pushes and your baby is going to be in your arms,” Jo said to her as she sat between Melina's legs. The head had been peeking out and Jo was ready to catch the baby.
“I want to feel her head, I want to know she’s okay,” Melina said, reaching forward as her husband held her up, and Jo took her hand and guided her down to feel her baby’s head.
“She’s got a lot of hair, can you feel it?” Jo asked her as she smiled.
“I can feel it,” Melina said as she cried with happiness.
“Okay, push, push,” Jo said as Melina pushed and the head was delivered. “Okay Melina, just give me a second, pause and breathe.”
“You're doing so good, my love,” her husband said as he focused on her, holding her up and as he leaned in and whispered words of encouragement to her.
Jo assessed the baby's cleft palate, as she cleared their airway. It didn’t look as bad.
“Okay, I have to push again,” Melina said as she felt another contraction coming.
“Okay push, push, and your baby's going to be here,” Jo promised her as Melina pushed and out popped and Jo caught the beautiful baby.
They let out a cry, as Jo held them up for Melina and her husband to see. Melina cried with happiness as her husband stood there in awe.
“It’s a happy and strong girl,” Jo said as she placed the baby on their chest as Melina held her baby.
“She's beautiful,” Melina cried as she cradled her baby. “Dr. Wilson, her cleft isn't that bad is it?”
“Let’s take a look, Jo said as she waited for Melina to hand the baby over.
She did reluctantly and watched intently as Jo took the baby girl over to the baby warmer. Jo suctioned her mouth as the baby cried and grabbed her flashlight. She looked in the baby’s mouth and lip to see the palate and couldn't stop herself from letting out a breath as she saw the large open cleft palate. The entire roof of their mouth was gone.
“Let's page the on-call pediatrician,” Jo said as the nurse next to her nodded and one of the other nurses ran out.
“Alright, I'm just going to take the baby to get them measured and weighed,” Jo said, turning back to give Melina a small smile.
“What do we have?” Arizona's voice shocked her and Jo nearly jumped back.
She didn't say anything as one of the nurses explained the case to Arizona as she assessed the baby. Jo stepped back and looked over at Melina.
“I have to push again.”
“Okay, let’s deliver the placenta.”
“What about my baby?”
“She’s got a severe cleft palate, but Dr. Robbins is the best pediatric surgeon I know, she’s in good hands.”
While she let Arizona focus on the baby, everything was in slow motion as she helped Melina. Jo listened to Arizona as she treated the baby giving her an assessment and before the baby calmed. Jo disposed of the placenta and Melina’s bleeding was under control as Arizona placed the baby back in Melina's arms.
She said a lot of things about the cleft lip and palate and her plan for the baby, but she also reassured them that they still had a happy healthy baby.
“You're lucky Dr. Wilson is one of the best.” Jo was quick to catch this Arizona as beamed over at her, but she could only manage a forced smile and a nod in agreement.
“I'll leave you two to get to know your baby,” Jo said as she quickly escaped the room, but Melina and her husband were too enthralled in their baby to notice.
“Jo wait,” Arizona called after her, but Jo was halfway down the hallway.
She didn’t wait or stop to look back as she started to run down the halls looking for any escape. She didn't realize how nervous she was until she stopped at the elevator, pressing the buttons on repeat before deciding she should take the stairs. She quickly ran and opened the door, but before she could escape into the stairwell, Arizona caught her arm. Arizona pushed her forward as they both stepped into the stairwell.
“I have to go, I have another case in the ER,” Jo said as she quickly tried to run down the stairs and escape the impending conversation she knew was about to happen.
“Jo wait please just let me talk to you for a moment,” Arizona said as she tried to plead with her and kept her grasp on Jo's elbow.
“Well forgive me for not wanting to talk about the man who fucken left me!” Jo yelled as she escaped Arizona and ran down the stairs.
“He only told me a week ago!” Arizona said in defeat as Jo paused, she didn't turn around, but Arizona went on.
“Up until then, he had told me that you both were still in Seattle, happily married and that both of you had adopted Luna. I mentioned that I was going to Seattle and that I was excited to see you all and he broke down until told me everything. About Izzie and the twins and Kansas and everything. I was so angry with him so much that I took a pit stop in Kansas just to yell at him. Then I saw how miserable he is out there.”
“I don't care,” Jo said, cutting her off and turning around to face her. “I'm glad he's miserable, he made his bed now he can lie in it. I rebuilt my life without him. I'm an amazing general surgeon and I'm at the top of my class for OB. I have a family, a daughter, without him. I rebuilt everything without him. ”
“I know,” Arizona said softly, as Jo let out her anger in a breath.
“When Callie and I divorced, we had the most bitter custody battle. I literally went to war with Callie over our daughter. And looking back I regret the way I handled things we both do. After I moved to New York,  we managed to repair our relationship and fall in love again…”
“Just because Alex is your baby brother and I'm bisexual doesn't mean that our relationship is anything like yours.”
“Okay hold up,” Arizona said, holding your hands up as Jo paused and huffed, crossing her arms. “I had no idea you were bisexual, so we're going to have to revisit this later. But I'm not trying to play matchmaker.”
“Oh really?” Jo asked, raising an eyebrow at her.
“Okay maybe a little bit but Alex is brother to me and you're family too, anyone who works at Grey-Slone is family to me. And I want my family to be happy. Callie and I had the worst divorce and now we're getting married again! and I love you and I love Alex and I'm not trying to take sides in this, but I am saying that there is a chance that you could repair your relationship.”
“Arizona, no.”
“Yes, because you two were so in love! Out of all the couples at Gray-Sloan you guys were the one every rooted for. I remember your third year residency when you and Alex, broke up. I thought you'd never forgive him then, but you did! You were so much in love that you repaired your relationship and came back stronger. I just want you and Alex to have the same happiness that Callie and I have.”
Arizona reached out and put her hands on Jo's shoulders, but Jo shook her head pressing her fingers to her head as she rubbed her forehead.
“You don't understand,” Jo said, looking at Arizona and begging her to listen.
“Alex and I didn't just divorce, he left me for his ex-wife and his kids! And I understand why he did it, but he still left me. It was a choice that he made to end our marriage, instead of trying to work it all out and be honest with me. He chose our divorce. And yes, I still love him, deeply. But I can never love him again because of the trust that he broke. If we ever get back together there will always be a part of me that will question if he's just going to leave me again. I can't live like that and I won't raise my daughter in a relationship like that. Luna doesn't deserve that, She deserves to have parents who love and support each other. Alex and I will never have that.”
“Is that why you're with Link?”
“Yes, Link is my best friend and I love him,” Jo sighed as she thought about the life she and Link had together and the ring he had in his drawer for her.
Arizona was silent for a moment. She looked away from Jo's eyes and nodded, before she pulled Jo in for a hug. “I know I'm sorry I didn't mean to over step.”
“Thank you,” Jo said, as she smiled and relaxed.
“I know that you have a life here in Seattle with Luna and Link, but I'd like to accelerate your studies and offer you a fellowship in New York. You are so talented and I've seen you handle tricky situations that most third year residents would drown in. Carina said that the two of you have transformed the maternity ward here in Seattle and cut the maternal mortality rate from 30% down to 3%. I want to implement those changes in New York and bring those changes to every single hospital in the US.”
Arizona beamed a smile and Jo stood in awe of the offer Arizona had given her.
“But you should also know that I've also offered Alex a job in New York and I think he’ll take it.”
“You can't play matchmaker, Arizona,” Jo said as she sighed and shook her head. “I know that it's only been a few weeks for you, but it's been three years for me. My daughter is the best thing that's ever happened to me and it never would have happened if he hadn't left me. And yeah, maybe we would have adopted her together, but it doesn't change the fact that he left. I'm alone and nothing you or him would change that. He made the choice to leave and I made the choice to stay away from him.”
Jo looked up at Arizona, pleading with her to accept this and she finally nodded. “I understand, but I'm still hoping that you'll at least come to visit New York, let me show you around the Robbins-Herman Foundation, please?”
Jo looked down but smiled. “I'll consider it.”
“Great,” Arizona said as she reached out and wrapped Jo in a hug. “Now tell me all about this research you and Carina are doing on intrauterine scarring.”
“Well, Carina and I have started researching how to use the uterus's ability to shed its lining and discard tissue to shed the scar tissue and completely rebuild the walls of the uterus again.”
Jo smiled as they started to walk downstairs together and Arizona hung on her every word. It was clear to Arizona that Jo was passionate about her work, and she was proud of her. It took a special person to succeed in this field and Arizona was so happy to have Jo be a part of this. They talked for hours, meeting after work at Jo's Penthouse where Arizona was able to meet Luna and she absolutely doted on her. Arizona was able to convince Jo to come to New York, at least for a conference and to look around the foundation. Yet, Jo didn't want to accept her offer of a job. Still, they promised to keep in contact and Jo felt good about having her friend back in her life.

Make it make sense,
I’m gonna give my opinion on some major deaths on Grey’s Anatomy because I am pissed about DeLuca.
10-makes sense;
5- wether they were alive or dead the story wouldn't have been affected;
1-thanks for the shock value buddy, you a bad storyteller;
Thatcher Grey 7/10
By the time when he died, Meredith was done with needing him. It was a death that finished her storyline with her father, which had been finished for a long while. It was a death that showed more Meredith's development than anything else.
Ellis Grey 6/10
One lives, one dies. It’s not a bad end, but it was a wasted death. There was still much to be explored in their relationship.
Adele Webber 9/10
For Richard to move on, it made sense; they had explored a lot of their past relationship by that point and she had moved on from him. Divorcing a sick woman would have just been cruel on Richard’s part and would’ve made him look like a dick.
Doc the Dog- -1/10
Undeserved, he was the goodest of boys
Henry Burton 8/10
Teddy’s husband was a sweetheart and they could have done a lot more with him, but that would have meant him working in the hospital and since he hadn’t any degree related to a medical field it made sense. I wish it didn’t, because I really loved him. His death also gave a new dynamic to Teddy’s relationship with both Owen and Cristina
Reed Adamson & Dr. Charles Percy 7/10
It was a mass shooting, people die. Here the writers really had a free for all on who they wanted to axe. Reed’s death was better than Percy’s.
Denny Duquette 9/10
It had repercussions on the story. I wished he would've lived and he was always fun on the screen, but yes, it makes sense.
Dylan Young 0/10
The bomb was out. Severd no purpose, other than to have George's weird sex dream realised in a fucked up way. Really the guy deserved to live
George O’Malley 4/10
He really could have just left. Sure, it was emotional and it was a big loss, but really he could've just left.
Dr. Craig Thomas 3/10
He was old, okay. Did he really need to die? No. He was a wonderful man that would've helped Cristina realise that returning to Sloan-Grey was the right move.
Derek Shepard 10/10
Derek was toxic, he sure as hell was and I loved the man either way, but without a complete character assasination him leaving the show would have made no sense.
Mark Sloan 3/10 & Lexie Grey 2/10
I'm grouping them because their deaths happened in close proximity, but something could have been invented for them to move in. Not even Sophia would've been an issue.
Samuel Norbert Avery 2/10
I'm giving it this grade because it led to that whole Maggie/Jackson nonsense. It was badly done on the long run.
Heather Brooks 1/10
-she was a good kid and the way she died was mean and just for shock value.
Paul Stadler-Jo’s ex husband 5/10
I get no one wanted to write an episode where Jo goes to court but and drag out the story some more but I would've liked it to be done.
Andrew DeLuca -10/10
Like George, he could've just left. He was one of my favorite characters so I'm extra salty about it and I went into it in another post.
Alex Karev's entire story ark -3/10
Here is a character whose death would have made more sense. What were they smoking in the writer's room when they came up with this, because I'm pretty sure it was expired.

Letting someone as nice as Todd down easily. Jo didn’t know how to feel. She on one hand did feel she needed to put herself out there. Especially considering Alex was probably out on the farm playing house with that woman. I knew i was only guarding my heart. I was only protecting myself. Todd was the opposite of the guys I dated. Making the list, overly confident, broody, tended to be blended from the same cloth as me. I just didn’t want to hurt him, but seeing his face fall it had kept reappearing in my the next few days.
I tried to be nice, I was caring especially towards my parents. And with being a new mother to Luna, I was harboring the care of my newly fixed heart after the way my husband left me. I just didn’t feel like it was okay yet to step out into the dating world. Of course it didn’t stop Link from asking the night before when I was holding a glass of wine in hand after tucking Luna into bed about the guy with the soft eyes at the hospital. I had waved my hand off as a brush off. “ I shut it down.” In response I felt Link’s eyes on me.
“ You’re afraid of putting yourself out there. I get it. After Amelia I felt like I couldn’t date. But not every guy is gonna turn out like Karev, You deserve to be happy Jo.” Karev; the name I had despised with my whole body; but I had brushed it off. I had turned my glaze to my best friend as I pressed play on the rerun of a rom-com The wedding planner, it was a cute watch. “ Thanks Link, I’m just protecting the guy. I’m a cruse okay. I’m incapable of having that lasting love.” A saying I stood by. After that Link had shut up but I felt his hand around my shoulder. We barely spoke this morning before I was due at the hospital. I had dropped Luna at the daycare; before I had met with Carina; we had shared a coffee; as I filled her in on Laura’s case. The peacemaker option, the baby’s heartbeat that I did the few days before.
Carina nodded as she made a comment; after. “ Good plan Wilson, it’s probably her best option with her record. We want to seek out the best living outcome for her and the baby.” Swallowing my thought I had tossed my empty coffee in the trash as I followed her lead into the room; where Laura was laid in her bed. I noticed the absence of Todd; I was kinda sadden to see he wasn’t joining us. He was easy on the eyes; I kept that note to myself as I held the chart to my chest. Eyes focused on the patient; of course my eyes did snap up when I heard him; the feet belonging to Todd; I felt a twitch of a smile hit against bare lips, My eyes met his for a second before I aimed my glaze to his sister.
I had to hold my tongue at Laura who had to mention her overbearing brother; Carina had mentioned she had one of those. “ It’s okay, they mean well. Overall this is the best option, I know it’s soon but we want to keep the baby in until it’s fully cooked.” The humor; the saying with the baby in the oven,  “ So we advise to do the peacemaker before the baby is born, there’ a good success rate, if you want Dr. Wilson can get you the papers to prove it. But I promise you’re in the best care possible.” At that for some reason I aimed my gaze over to Todd I could see he was a little nervous when it came to his sister, I wanted to reassure him. With a smile. I just hoped it didn’t give him the wrong impression.

B-Team (Andrew DeLuca x Alex Karev's Sister)
Tumblr media
Age Rating: 12+
Fandom: Grey’s Anatomy
Canon Episode: B-Team Shorts on YouTube
Ship: Andrew DeLuca x Amber Karev (Alex Karev's Sister)
AN: Sorry for being away for so long but hopefully this makes up for it. Amber Karev is taking Sam Bello’s spot from season 14 so there won’t be a love triangle.
Summary: Amber starts her first day as an intern and is met with expected obstacles. Meanwhile DeLuca tries to navigate his feelings for Amber after discovering her relation to Alex and goes to Carina for help who takes matters into her own hands.
Words: 8260
I walk around the dozens of boxes in my studio apartment frantically as I look for my keys. Today is my first day at work and I already lost my keys as if the universe hates me and wants me to be late. I probably look insane no doubt with my hand trying to hold my hair up in a ponytail, my other hand holding my coffee mug and wearing my pink panties with my casual sweater for the day.
“Damn it come on where are you?!” I sip my coffee when I feel something metal hit my lips. I stop suddenly and look down to find my keys inside the mug to my relief and disgust, “Of course two sugars, crème and keys like I always take it.” I don’t know why I’m talking to myself, so I pull my keys out and clean them.
After throwing the mug away I go to a mirror and try to put my hair in a ponytail when the band snaps to my frustration, “Grrr!” I throw the band away and opt for a hair clip instead praying it suffices. I grab my backpack, put my jeans on, grab my Adidas and open the door. I hop down the hall as I put my shoes on trying not to fall. I finally put them on and run to the elevator exhaling as it closes.
I run to my black 2012 Ford Mustang in the parking lot and hurriedly go inside and hope the engine starts. I turn the key in the ignition and by some miracle it starts the first time and I skid out of the spot and drive to the hospital as fast as I can.
Later
Andrew walks to the hospital across the park trying to keep his head together after last night’s revelation. He looked around hoping to find Carina so he can talk to her and figure out what to do. Ever since he figured out who Amber really is his mind has been wrestling with images of her in the bar flirting with her and having fun and images of her brother beating him up and the pain he faced after.
If she was a regular resident who was related to an attending, he wouldn’t be so conflicted but a regular attending wouldn’t have hit him. He and Alex were amicable after everything but he highly doubted Alex would be okay knowing his little sister slept with Andrew and start a fantasy football league together. It would make things more complicated for both of them especially for Andrew. And then there’s Amber who would be caught in the middle of it. The idea of that makes Andrew feel equally uneasy due to how fast and hard he developed feelings for her.
“Hey, didn’t I meet you at a bar somewhere?”
Andrew eyes widen at the familiar voice and turns around to find Amber smiling at him wearing a black sweater with her hair in a clip. Even in a slightly disheveled state he couldn’t help his physical attraction towards her natural beauty. Andrew grins slightly trying to remain cool despite his stomach being in a twist in her presence.
“Hey, I-I didn’t think I was gonna see you so soon after last night.”
“Well it’s my first day and I’ve had perfect attendance since 1st grade and I want to keep that up. You’re not carrying a coffee are you because I don’t want coffee on my cleavage the first day.”
Andrew chuckles, “No I’m weaning off caffeine I’ve uh got enough keeping me up.” He didn’t add that she was the reason he was up all night and not in a good way.
“Well your stronger than me. So, have you told anyone about us hooking up? Besides Dr. Robbins, your sister and Jo I mean.” Amber asks.
“Uh no not really I figured that’s not an impression you want to make with the other interns.”
Amber grins, “No definitely not, I don’t want them thinking I’m using nepotism and sex to work my way into an O.R. Plus, if it got back to Alex, it would go back to my family who would be freaking out that I wasn’t being usual responsible Amber.”
Andrew nods trying to keep a calm face over mention of her brother, Amber is oblivious as she teases him, “Even though we were totally responsible…twice.”
“It’s cool I get it.”
Amber looks at her watch, “Oh shoot I gotta go, my shift starts but we should hang out after and…catch up.” Amber makes her voice breathier at catch up.
Andrew looks at her and is more conflicted the more he spends time with her so he opts to escape, “Um yeah maybe I’ll let you know.”
“Okay see you later.” Amber rushes inside with Andrew watching her as his anxiety increases causing him to walk briskly inside the building. He tried to stay calm as he put on his scrubs and finally finds Carina in the MRI room that she’s using for her study.
Andrew sits next to her as she writes down her data, “I need your help.”
“I’m busy as you can see my patient is about to reach climax.”
Andrew groans, “You know there are other ways you could explain that without making it dirty.”
Carina continues writing without looking at him, “Andrea if you want my help for something don’t insult my work before or I will kick you out.”
“Right sorry. Um I have a personal problem and it’s pretty big so I need you to swear it won’t get out of this room, can you do that?”
“I am studying women during the most intimate and private moments of their lives of course I can keep a secret, what is it?”
Andrew tries to find where to begin, “Do you uh remember that night I walked in on you and Dr. Robbins?”
Carina doesn’t look up from her notes, “It’s hard to forget, it was a very nice night for us regardless. Once we went our separate ways of course.”
“Right well do you remember the girl that I brought with me?”
“The blonde who looks a little like Princess Diana, I remember her, did you get her number?”
Andrew bitterly chuckles, “No she wanted to finish med school with no strings attached so we decided to save a date if she ever came here again and she did.”
His sister still doesn’t look up, “Okay why is she here? Is it just for you?”
“No, she’s a surgical intern here.”
Carina still doesn’t look up despite that information, “And that’s a problem? We work long hours and she’s a surgeon like you so she doesn’t have to pretend to be interested.”
Andrew grimaces, “Believe me I wish us working together was the only problem. Do you remember when I was beat up last year by my boss after I helped his girlfriend walk home after she got drunk?”
“Yes, it was very scary I remember you saying to me I didn’t have to travel 14 hours just to see you even though I was okay with it.” Carina gets confused, “Wait a minute what does that have to do with…” Carina doesn’t know her name due to Amber quickly leaving after meeting her when she was fighting with Andrew.
“Amber.” Andrew finishes for her.
“Amber, what does this have to do with Amber?”
Andrew purses his lips in cruel irony, “Well the boss that beat me up, Alex Karev.”
“Uh huh.” Carina nods, still looking at her notes.
“Amber is his sister and I slept with her that night.”
Carina finally stops writing and looks at Andrew with wide shocked eyes and he bitterly nods at her response.
“Do you see why I need your help?”
Meanwhile
I walk down the hall and find the intern locker room. I enter the room and I see that it looks how it sounds, a locker room. It’s like the lockers we get at high school only it smells like ammonia which frankly is better than sweaty socks. I’m not the only one here I spot approximately 20 people in here all in light blue scrubs with their stethoscopes hanging by their necks.
I go to my assigned locker and open it to find my own scrubs and lab coats. The sight of the rest of my life is both exciting and dauting but I push through it and put them on. The only thing I brought from home that I’m using are my adidas and burgundy stethoscope my mom sent me as a graduation gift. I don’t know why she sent it maybe as a way to make up for being out of it most of my life but I took it because it’s not good to pass up free stuff in my position. I put the stethoscope in my pocket as a woman wearing a hijab next to me pulls out her flashcards.
“What are those?” I ask curiously.
“Their study material’s.”
“For what? We already passed the boards.”
The woman looks at me, “No I know it’s just that it helps me remember what I learned so I don’t forget it and accidently kill someone my first day.” She chuckles nervously.
I raise an eyebrow at her, “You don’t have to laugh I can tell your nervous.”
“So nervous!” The woman shows her true face and it is fearful, “I’m Dahlia by the way or Dr. Qadri I mean I’m still getting used to that title.”
“Yeah, I know what you mean, I’m Amber.” We shake hands.
“I mean it is crazy I wanted this for so long and now I’m actually here and it’s…” Dahlia looks around in amazement, “You know I grew up in Utah and went to state school pre-med, it was the only thing my parents could afford at the time.”
“Yeah, I went to Iowa State pre-med, I don’t even think some of these people even know what Iowa is.”
Dahlia chuckles, “You know I heard a rumor that one of the new interns is Dr. Karev’s sister, he’s the chief of pediatric surgery here.”
I raise an eyebrow, “Really? What do you think of that?” I want to know her opinion of me before finding out who I am so I can know who I’m dealing with. And so I can mess with her.
Dahlia scoffs, “I mean come on most of these guys are legacies and they don’t know the true meaning of hard work not like us. Their parents donated to their alumni so they can get in with a median MCAT average. I mean this girl coincidently matches at the same hospital her brother works. She obviously taking the easy route if you ask me and that route is named nepotism.” I nod at her statement and try to act like I don’t want to punch her. She’s oblivious of course and she asks me something she’s gonna wish she didn’t, “Sorry I don’t think I caught your last name what is it?”
“Karev, it’s Dr. Amber Karev.” I say with a grin as Dahlia’s eyes widen as she realizes she just called me easy and spoiled.
Dahlia stammers, “Uh y-your-”
“Taking the easy route named nepotism I think you just said.” I say as I glare at her offended.
“I-I am so so sorry I didn’t know.” Dahlia tries to rectify her mistake but makes it worse, “And can I just say your brother is a pioneer and I think your about to continue that legendary legacy of his.”
It isn’t even an hour into my first day and I’m already being compared to my brother. I’m starting to get annoyed by this so I need to walk away, “I’m gonna walk away from you now before you make this more awkward.”
Dahlia nods, “Smart you seem really, really smart and so pretty I mean it.”
I roll my eyes and focus back on my locker and she gets the hint and goes back to her cards. I knew I was gonna be accused of nepotism and favoritism when I got matched here but it still irks me when they think I’ve had it ‘easy.’ I mentally chuckle at that assumption, if only these asshats knew how ‘easy’ I really had it. Of course, if they actually knew about the crazy mom, absent dad and crazy brother who attacked me the stares would increase and instead of being accused of nepotism I would be accused of being schizophrenic.
I immediately remember my morning routine and pull out my small sudoku book and work on one page of puzzles. One page a day has been my routine since I was 16 and I realized there was a strong possibility my genes could turn on me. I know it’s silly to think a kid’s puzzle will keep the hallucinations at bay but solving puzzles makes me feel better for some reason. I go through the grids quickly even with the guy next to me, Casey Parker, chanting something that sounds like, “Don’t stand out, don’t throw up and call it a win.”
Dahlia asks something from her flashcards, “Okay which is the artery that splits to the right common carotid in the right subclavian?”
Casey and I immediately answer even though I’m at the 3rd grid right now, “Innominate.”
Dahlia scoffs, “No that’s not it, it’s…” Dahlia checks the answer in the back and realizes we were right, “Crap!”
I don’t even look up from my book when Levi walks in chipper as ever. Frankly I’m amazed he even got into this program after he botched his first day here. It was the day of my interview and also the day he dropped his glasses into the body cavity during a surgery. And that was before he became a doctor, which says a lot.
“Good morning!” I wave dismissively at him too caught up in finishing the page before my shift, only three grids to go, “I think my mom forgot to pack my stethoscope, is it gross to borrow one?”
“Yes.” I look to find Taryn Helm sitting on the bench with her headphones on clearly stressed, “And shut up I need to get in my zone.”
“Nobody is talking except him.” I blankly say as I get to my final grid.
Casey explains to Dahlia, “Taryn’s nervous.”
“I’m not nervous!” Taryn snaps, “I’m in my zone.”
A voice I unfortunately recognizes whoo’s as he enters the lockers, “Day one baby! Let’s go!” Vik Roy tries to high five Levi who is carrying stuff. I roll my eyes at him and try to focus on my puzzle even when he tries to high five all of us even Taryn who is just as annoyed by him.
“No.” Taryn says dismissively causing Roy to retreat.
“What’s her deal?”
“Zone.” We all explain.
“How are you so not freaking out right now?” Dahlia asks.
Vik smugly grins, “Because Dahlia I don’t freak out, I don’t get jitters and I crush first impressions.”
I snort at that as Casey sarcastically dismisses, “Clearly.”
Vik catches my book as he chuckles and asks me, “Sudoku? What are you 13?”
“No that’s you.” I say as I finish the puzzle and Casey chuckles at my insult, “You know if you did as many puzzles as me, you’d probably be capable of an intellectual conversation. And that’s required by doctors…dude.” I say the last word with venom and he rolls his eyes.
“She’s right about that Dr. Roy.” I turn to find Chief Bailey behind me and I get my act together closing my locker to stand in front of her.
“Good morning chief Bailey.” The others gather in front of her with me at the front center. The chief doesn’t looked the least bit impressed with any of us and honestly I wouldn’t blame her.
“Explain to me why I was just in the conference room and you all were not?” We all look at her confused since none of us got the memo to meet her at the conference room, “If I’m somewhere you are supposed to be you had better be there too, any questions?”
“Uh Chief I heard a rumor that one of us will get into an OR today and be able to scrub in.” Taryn says eagerly. I can tell she’s hungry for surgery and will be hard to deal with this year.
Bailey answers, “Today you will have the opportunity to prove that you’re ready to scrub in, one of you might surprise me.” I grin at the opportunity to scrub in on my first day. I took the initiative before I came in to memorize the steps of basic procedures from appys to lap choles. It helps that I’m a pack rat who didn’t throw out her medical textbooks. The others are getting giddy as well including the douchy one who thinks he’s got more of a chance than any of us.
“So, there’s a chance?”
I decide to step in and show off, I would kick myself for not trying harder to beat this arrogant jerk, “Chief I would like to point out that I know all the steps to a basic procedure. If you ask me about an appy I can-”
The chief has none of it as she interrupts me, “I have five rules memorize them; rule number one don’t bother sucking up. Rule number two nurses will page you will answer every page at a run. A run!” The chief walks out and we all follow her as she continues to list all of her rules while we walk around the hospital, “That’s rule number two. Your first shift starts now and lasts 24 hours. You're interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain. You run labs, write orders, work every second night until you drop, and don't complain.
We stop outside an on-call room, she opens the door revealing bunks inside clearly used, “On-call rooms. Attendings hog them. Sleep when you can where you can, which brings me to rule number three. If your resident is sleeping, don't wake them unless your patient is dying. And you better sleep alone in here and not with anyone else especially attendings.” I raise my eyebrow at that comment. I wonder if that rule applies to one night stands with senior residents before you were even hired. I decide not to think on it and just listen, “Rule four: The dying patient better not be dead when they get there. Not only will you have killed someone, you woke your resident up for no reason. We clear?” I notice she left out one rule so I gingerly raise my hand like I’m in elementary school again.
“Yes?”
I put my hand down, “Um, you said five rules that was only four.”
Bailey finishes, “Rule number five, when I move you move.” We follow her to Jo Wilson who stands by the nurse’s station with a tablet on hand, “This is Dr. Wilson she is a senior resident and will assign you to someone’s service, Wilson they’re your problem now good luck.” The chief walks away and we stand in front of Jo.
“Um okay let’s see what we got here.” Jo reads through the tablet, “Parker and Helm you’re with Hunt in trauma, Qadri you’re with Dr. Webber, Schmitt you’re with DeLuca and Karev your with the chief of peds” At least she didn’t call Alex by his last name but I’m still bitter at this unfortunate turn of events. I try not to let my distaste show as Jo dismisses us.
I walk through the hospital and thanks to the directory I find the peds floor pretty quickly. I look around trying to find Alex in the sea of nurses and little kids. I see him by the nurses station talking to a couple I assume are parents of his patient. I wait till the parents leave, I don’t want to cause a scene in front of them. I know I should be a professional and normally I am but when your working with the brother who left you during the worst time of your life all bets are off. As soon as the couple walk away I walk towards Alex and clear my throat indicating my presence. He turns to me and look off guard by me but manages to speak in an even tone.
“Hey what are you doing here?”
“I’m on your service believe it or not.” I try to speak as numbly as I can, there are kids and they don’t need to see a unstable blonde while their recovering.
Alex’s eyebrows are raised as if he’s just as shocked as I was, “Jo sent you?”
“Dr. Wilson sent me yes, is she the kind of person who arranges a family reunion in the guise of an intern working for an attending?” I ask genuinely because I don’t know Jo but from what Aaron said Alex has a habit of hooking up with unstable women.
Alex narrows his eyes, “No she’s not and I would appreciate it if you didn’t make assumptions of a woman I love.”
I inhale to keep my emotions in check and get into the mindset of an intern, “Look can you just give me an assignment so I can get through your service and end this day quickly?”
Alex sees he hit a nerve and relents, “Fine Oscar Montez he’s in for a gall bladder removal. I need you to prep an O.R. take his labs and prep him before surgery.”
I nod tersely and walk away from him to prep an O.R. for my first patient.
Later
Andrew sits next to Carina as they speak in Italian so they won’t get overheard. Carina is upset with her brother over unknowingly sleeping with the sister of the man who almost killed him. Andrew is still in a mind boggle over this situation he somehow got himself in.
“How did you not know who she was? Didn’t she tell you her last name? Karev isn’t that common.” Carina admonishes in Italian.
“It just happened.” Andrew responds in Italian, “We met at the bar we got to talking she said her name was Amber that’s it.”
“And she didn’t tell you her brother works here?”
“No well…” Andrew pauses as he remembers what she told him after they walked in on Carina and Arizona.
“Well, what? She told you didn’t she and you didn’t connect the dots like an idiot.”
“I mean she mentioned having two brothers and one was named Alex but I just thought it was a coincidence and he didn’t tell anyone about a sister named Amber. There weren’t any dots to connect neither of them gave that much information or no information at all.”
Carina raised an eyebrow, “So you slept with a woman you didn’t know anything about beyond her first name?”
Andrew rolls his eyes, “You know I don’t shame you for having random one-night stands with women you know nothing about.”
“Yes, you do, you did that the other night remember?”
“I walked in on you about to sleep with my boss and roommate, and now you’re doing the same thing but with Hunt.” Andrew states annoyingly, “How am I supposed to react?” Just then Levi Schmitt knocks on the door agitating Andrew, “What?!”
Levi looks at them timidly, “S-Sorry um I’m Dr. Schmitt and they put me on your service Dr. DeLuca.”
“Of course, they did.” Andrew says under his breath at the unfortunate timing.
Levi looks at the screen curiously, “What kind of research is this? Can I help?”
“No look I’m busy at the moment so go help Dr. Karev with Oscar Montez do his labs and pre op tell them I sent you.”
Levi looks at him confused, “Uh but he already-”
“Go now that’s an order.” Andrew says tensely, causing Schmitt to walk away in fear. Andrew leans back and pinches the bridge of his nose trying to keep his mind together, “Where were we?”
Carina thinks, “Why did you sleep with her when you knew nothing about her?”
Andrew sighs, “…She seemed nice, I mean she was sarcastic and she had a bad attitude but that was because I kind of hit her and spilled coffee on her when we first met.” Carina’s eyebrows raise at that as he continues, “We ran into each other at the bar and I bought her a meal to apologize. We ate, we talked and eventually she dropped the attitude. She was nice, she was funny, smart she made me laugh and you saw her that night she is hot.”
“Very hot.” Carina adds.
“Yeah, the point is we got around the personal information and I started to like her and she started to like me we flirted and…after we left you two, we went back to her hotel room. I think you know the rest. It was all a coincidence.”
Carina looks at him curiously as a dark thought comes to her, “And she didn’t know who you were? Did you tell her your full name?”
“Um yeah what does that have to do with anything?”
Carina sighs at her brother, “Oh Andrea your still such an innocent bambino.”
Andrew looks at Carina confused, “What are you suggesting?”
“Maybe she knew who you were and wanted to get back at you. Maybe she planned to meet you and sleep with you so she can report you to the chief and get you fired.”
Andrew chuckles thinking it was crazy, “Carina she’s not some KGB sex mole I think I would know that. And why would she target me specifically? I dropped the charges against her brother.”
“Yes, but before that you almost sent him to prison for two years. When I heard about what happened I wanted to punch that man after what he did, perhaps she feels that way about her brother too. Does that sound so crazy?”
Andrew looks at her in thought as the idea starts to make sense. Now that he thought about it Amber was light on the details concerning herself especially her last name. He didn’t think much of it but perhaps his sister was on to something. However a thought stops him from fully considering it.
“She was eager to leave when we were fighting, if she really wanted to get back at me she would have stayed. Why did she leave?”
“You would have thought it suspicious if she stayed. Does she seem smart enough to come to that conclusion? Plus, you chased after her maybe she anticipated that too so she could seduce you back in bed. Was she forward when you came to her?”
Andrew pales at that logic as he has fully considered it now and wants to get ahead of it before another Karev comes after him, “Damn it. And just when I thought this nightmare was over for me.”
Carina looks at her brother sadly over his predicament, “I’m sorry Andrea.”
“So what do I do? Do I report her or something?”
Carina rolls her eyes, “You want to report an intern you slept with while you are technically her boss? I don’t think she needs to fire you if your gonna do it yourself stupid.”
Andrew closes his eyes in despair, “I guess I’ll just ignore her unless it’s about work. Speaking of work, I have to go.” Andrew stands up and walks out the door before adding, “And I know what you want to do but don’t Carina I don’t need my big sister fighting my battles for me. Please leave this alone and do not interrogate her.”
Andrew leaves Carina in the room. Carina looks at her notes before deciding to ignore her brother and find out more about this girl for Andrew’s sake.
Later
After I reserve an O.R. I go to Oscar Montez’s room to do his labs. I wrap the tourniquet around Oscar’s upper arm with my gloves on and grin assuredly at him to make it easier for him. He grins back either to be polite or because he finds me attractive. When it came to teenage boys, they usually fall head over heels for me because I’m fire, whatever that means.
I found from the chart most of his labs were already done and Oscar told me another intern was also here taking his labs. The only thing left was his bloodwork and I didn’t want whatever hungry intern swooping in and stealing my patient. By some coincidence that intern, Schmitt came in stunned by my presence while I wipe an alcohol rub over the vein.
“Oscar’s my patient.”
I raise an eyebrow at his excuse, “No he’s not he’s mine go find your own and try not to steal them this time.”
The guy doesn’t leave as he walks to my side, “I’ve already done the rest of Oscar’s labs, his pre op, he knows me.”
Oscar chimes in, “I-It’s cool.” He looks at me with a smile confirming his attraction to me, “I’m cool with it.”
I smile at him, “Thank you Oscar.” I turn to Schmitt with a glare that catches him off guard, “And you, I don’t know who sent you but you can tell them Dr. Karev sent me here first and to check twice before they screw up again.”
“Well a senior resident specifically instructed me to draw his blood.”
I scoff, “Well Dr. Karev asked me and he’s the attending so I win and you lose now walk away with some of your dignity left.” I try to insert the needle into Oscar’s vein but I miss causing him to yell ow, “Sorry Oscar.”
Schmitt tries to step in, “That’s the wrong angle.”
“Back off.”
“You’ll miss the vein.” Schmitt tries to grab my arm to take over.
My patience reaches its limits, “Schmitt if you don’t take your hands off me in the next two seconds you won’t have hands.” He relents and I try again but miss the vein again causing Oscar to yell ow again. Alex walks in and I put the needle away.
“What’s going on?” Alex asks.
“Dr. Karev, I was just running Oscar’s labs like you asked.” I say in a clipped tone directed at Schmitt.
“There might have been some confusion on who exactly was supposed to do it but…” He looks at the glare I give him and he cowers, “But we’ve totally got it under control.”
Alex puts his gloves on rolling his eyes, “Your butchering his arm Glasses move.” I’m glad Alex thinks it was him and not me because the last thing I want on my first day is to be seen as an incompetent intern who can’t even find a vein.
“Oh no that wasn’t me that was…” Schmitt tries to explain but Alex has none of it as he takes over and we walk to the other side of the bed.
“Don’t expect much from intern’s Oscar, that way you’ll never be disappointed.” I roll my eyes at his comment, “Karev present.”
“But she isn’t even-” Schmitt underestimates me but fortunately I looked at his chart and thanks to my almost eidetic memory I know what the prognosis is and what the surgery is.
“Oscar Montez, 16 has cholestasis that is currently not responding to dietary changes, he’ll need to have his gall bladder removed.”
“And the approach?”
“It has to be open. The scans show adhesions and it’s too difficult to take them down with a minimally invasive approach.”
“Very good Karev.” Alex says and Oscar notices the similar names we have.
“Karev? Is she your sister or something?” The kids question causes a silent moment for me as I come up with an answer.
“Or something.” The response clearly hurts Alex, he’s acting like it doesn’t but I know him well enough that those are his ‘I’m in pain but I’m gonna act like I’m not shoulders’ I guess a small part of me feels bad but I made it clear he’s not family to me and I’m not his family either.
Schmitt chooses now of all times to ask, “Dr. Karev, chief Bailey mentioned that one of us might be able to operate today. I do have O.R. experience.”
I snicker lightly, “O.R. experience, is that what you call it?”
“Do I get a say?” Oscar asks, scared for his life.
Alex glares at Schmitt specifically, “You dropped your glasses in the surgical field.”
I nod amused by it and add for Oscar, “It’s true, I was there it would’ve been a lot less hilarious if the patient didn’t make it.”
Levi looks at me insulted and tries to rectify it, “And I promised that nothing like that will ever happen again.” He points at the stupid sports band holding his glasses in place which doesn’t impress me or Alex.
“Right because I told the nurses I want you on B team today.” Schmitt looks pleased but for some reason I can see this heading south for him.
“Oh, what’s B team?”
Alex explains, “Well if it’s in a bed pan you clean it, if it’s in a barf bucket you clean it, if it’s blood you clean it.” I grin slightly at this as Levi’s face falls from despair while Alex goes back to the patient, “Oscar, well get you prepped in a bit.” Alex leaves the room and I decide to point out the obvious to Schmitt who probably doesn’t have enough social skills to realize.
“He hates you. And frankly I’m not crazy about you either.”
Levi nods, “I might have slept with Dr. Wilson.” That statement causes me to laugh out loud as I would never see a gorgeous woman like her reduce herself to getting in bed with this fumbling mess. The only reasons I could think was she’s desperate, dying or lost a bet and I haven’t seen any of those in our interactions so far.
“I’m gonna go now try to double glove when you’re picking up shit Schmitt.” With that I leave to get Oscar prepped for surgery. Along the way I find DeLuca in the surgical floor sitting at the station going over charts and decide to brighten my day just a bit.
“Hey.” Andrew looks up and sees me before turning his eyes toward the desktop again.
“Hey.” Andrew sounds aloof for some reason but I try to look past it and engage him in conversation.
“So, first day here is a bust so far. I was supposed to do labs for a peds patient but then Glasses comes in saying he was sent by a resident. I practically had to fight him over the damn needle and like an idiot I botched up the bloodwork…twice. Don’t tell anyone though.”
“Well, uh you’re an intern and interns are supposed to make mistakes.”
“Did you stab a person twice in the arm on your first day here?”
“No but I did accidentally pose as an attending and got caught when a resident tried to get me to stabilize a woman’s spine on my first day.”
I widen my eyes at that statement and my curiosity is peaked, “Really?” For some reasons hearing that he has war stories at work makes him more attractive. Maybe it’s because I’m comforted in not being the only messed up one out of the two of us.
“Yeah it’s as bad as it sounds trust me.”
“I would be shocked if it wasn’t.” Andrew grins slightly at my comment, it’s a first real reaction I got out of him today so I go for the kill, “Maybe you can elaborate more tonight assuming I’m still alive and not exhausted to death. I was thinking a night in town like we said.”
Andrew looks up at me with a solemn look that I haven’t seen in him since we first met. I don’t know what his problem is, could he already know about my past from working with Alex? I don’t know why Alex would tell people that part of my life that is mine to tell alone. Especially since he was clearly so ashamed of our family that he left as soon as he could and never looked back. I know I did the same thing but there weren’t any loose ends to tie when I left. Aaron was somewhat sane, and I kept my distance from mom, there was no one to leave behind in that hell hole. Could Andrew have figured it out somehow and that’s why he hasn’t given me a clear answer?
I mentally shrug it off, he’s a doctor he’s probably had a long day and doesn’t feel like going out tonight.
“Unless you’ve had a long day and you want to reschedule?”
He chuckles lightly for some reason, “I have had a long and stressful day, you wouldn’t believe it.”
I nod understanding, “Okay so how about tomorrow night then? You can pick out the place as long as it’s not that disgusting bar we met at last time. I can still feel the sticky residue on my fingertips.”
He licks his lips and looks at me in thought before answering, “Um…yeah tomorrow night would be good for me. I’ll text you the deets assuming you’ll give me your number this time.”
I grin at him, “Okay but let’s not exchange phones out in the open. I’m not up for exposing my sex life in public so…” I write my number discretely on a sticky note by the station and drop it in front of him. He takes it and puts it in his coat pocket. He looks somewhat tense and I want to ask what his problem is but he speaks before I ask.
“I’ll uh I’ll text you.”
“Great I hope it’s soon. I have to go see you later.” I turn and walk away from him as I walk down the hall and enter the elevator, I exhale a sigh of relief at my good fortune when someone stops the doors from closing all the way. I see a woman I think I recognize entering the elevator with me where only two of us occupy the space. She has a serious look on her face like she means business and after a few seconds I know where I’ve met her. She’s Andrew’s sister.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carina enters the elevator slowly and stands next to Amber who looks at her strangely. When she saw her passing her number to Andrew at the station, she knew she had to do this if her brother didn’t. She wants to protect Andrew from having his heart broken and possibly getting fired because of some vindictive woman who holds a grudge for her brother and will do anything to exact revenge no matter who gets hurt.
Amber looks at her curiously, “Um hi I almost didn’t recognize you with clothes on.” Amber chuckles to ease the tension, “I don’t think we properly met, I’m Dr. Amber Karev and-” Carina stops her midsentence when she pulls the stop button stopping the elevator. Amber looks at her confused as Carina faces her with a serious look.
“W-Why did you just do that? Is there something wrong or-” Carina ignores her question and instead grabs her face so she can look her in her blue eyes as she interrogates her. She notes that her eyes are a unique blue with a greenish tint but she moves on from that. She needs to know what is going on and if her brother is in danger once again. Amber stands still clearly intimidated which is exactly what Carina was hoping for before speaking to her for the first time.
“Are you a good person?”
Amber blinks with Carina’s hands still on both sides of her head, “What?”
Carina clarifies, “Are you a good person? Not perfect just morally do you consider yourself a good person?”
“I…This is very confusing for me.”
Carina ignores her comment and repeats herself, “Are you?”
“Um…Y-Yes.”
Carina continues, “Have people called you a good person before? Have you ever been accused of being manipulative or used anyone to get your own way?” Amber still looks at her confused but answers fearing what will happen if she doesn’t.
“Um no I haven’t if I did, I would’ve gone into politics instead of medicine.”
“Your funny.” Carina states matter of fact, “How many sexual partners have you had? I won’t judge.”
“Men or women or otherwise?”
“All of the above.”
Amber mentally counts, “…8 well 9 but I don’t know if it counts by your standards. I’m sorry, what is this about? I am very confused and a little scared right now.”
“It’ll be over soon; do you have a criminal record?”
“No well yes but it’s a juvie record and it was sealed when I turned 18.”
“What was the crime?”
Amber looks at her shyly as if ashamed of herself, “I might have possibly bashed a man’s knee with a crowbar but I don’t know you well enough to get into it and I was sent to juvie for three months after that.”
Carina tries to look past that as she can tell this girl has a rough past that led her to do that to someone, “Do you have any siblings?” She knows the answer but wants to hear Amber’s response.
“Two brothers. One works here and the other is in Iowa, he’s a mover.”
“Are you close with them?” Carina keeps a close eye on her reaction.
Amber shakes her head, “No we’re not it’s…it’s complicated and until last month I haven’t talked to the brother who works here for almost a decade.”
“Why is that?”
Amber sighs as if old memories are haunting her, “Because he left me when I needed him the most and I have resented him for it. I would elaborate but I don’t think a horror story is what you need before going to bed tonight.”
Carina sees that Amber is telling the truth, when the subject turned to her brother she didn’t flinch or grovel. She just gave an honest answer, “How old are you?”
“23.”
Carina looks at her slightly shocked at her age, “That’s awfully young to be a doctor, were you a genius baby?”
Amber shakes her head, “N-No I was just really desperate to get out of town and my mom was a librarian so I spent a lot of time reading books.”
Carina is impressed with her but stays on task, “Okay final question, what did you know about Andrew DeLuca before sleeping with him?”
Amber looks at her even more surprised if that was possible, “I guess he’s closer to you than he let on that night.”
“He is my baby brother.” Carina states coldly, “I love him and it’s my job to protect him, even if he can be an idiota sometimes. Now tell me what you knew about him that night before you two had sex. Tell me the truth and I won’t be mad I swear.”
Amber swallows but decides to be quick about it and state the facts, “Um…I didn’t know much about him. I met him at a bar and we ran into each other at work that morning, that’s how we recognized each other. When we first met he spilled cold coffee down my chest and elbowed me in the nose. I was pissed at him when we saw each other again but he offered to apologize in food and I took it because he seemed sweet and he wasn’t creepy about it like most guys. I knew he worked here but I didn’t get matched here until a month later so…now I’m just waiting to see where it goes if it goes anywhere.”
Carina looks into her eyes and sees what she was hoping for, complete and udder lack of malice. She knows now that this girl isn’t out to get Andrew and it was all just some coincidence on both of their parts. For once her brother was right and she was wrong making it both reassuring and annoying.
She shakes her head at her, “Your just another innocent bambino in this aren’t you?”
Amber looks at her blankly trying to process what just happened, “…If I say yes will you push that button and let me walk out of this elevator alone?”
“Yes.”
“Then yes I am an innocent…whatever you called me.” Carina finally stands back, pushes the button and keeps her hands to herself. Amber is still standing there frozen from shock until the elevator doors open and Amber walks out like her life depends on it.
That Night
My shift is over, it’s been a grueling 24 hours but I survived them with my sanity intact. Although my mind is still at a fog from my encounter with Carina DeLuca at the elevator. When she was interrogating me in there I was taken back and frightened. I don’t know what about me gave the impression I was manipulating Andrew that night we first saw each other. I barely said two words to her because she was preoccupied with reuniting with Andrew and I was in the middle of it along with Dr. Robbins. If anything her behavior that night was more alarming than mine at least one of us was wearing a shirt. I shake it off and decide to just get home and rest before the next day.
I try to ignore the blisters on my feet as I walk inside the locker room with Casey and Helm where I find the others just as exhausted.
“Wait did you scrub in?” Dahlia asks Casey after noticing the blood on his top.
“No but I was really close to Dr. Kepner when she shoved her hand in a gaping leg wound.”
I sit on the bench massaging my knees, “At least you saw a gaping leg wound.”
“I didn’t even get to see a leg.” Helm adds.
“Did anyone scrub in today?” I ask and they all say no to my relief. It would kill me if Glasses or Roy got to scrub in before I did. All of us are disappointed that the job we’ve always wanted is just B level grunt work.
“Are we ever gonna set foot in an O.R.?” Casey asks.
I chuckle, “Schmitt won’t in our lifetime.” He looks at me offended.
Helm smiles, “Hold it Schmitt was the first to kill a patient, Vik you owe me 20 bucks.” I chuckle at that as Schmitt tries to defend himself.
“I didn’t kill a patient.”
I grin at him before deciding to tell the others, I’ve had a weird day and I need something to take the edge off and making fun of Glasses is working so far, “No he just dropped his glasses in an open body cavity in the O.R. before he even started here.” All of them laugh and are shocked by my statement.
“Wait.” Dahlia chimes in, “Your Glasses?!”
I laugh, “Oh yeah I was there and it was worse than I made it sound.”
“You were all over Twitter!” Roy tells Schmitt with a laugh.
“Wasn’t the patient a little kid?” Helm asks.
“Yeah, I said it was worse than I made it sound.”
Schmitt stands up clearly having enough of the jokes and yells out, “My face was sweating and they accidentally slipped off!” I continue to laugh until I see chief Bailey approach behind him with a blank expression.
“Hello chief Bailey.” We all stand up and face her like soldiers going into battle which isn’t that far from what we’re doing.
“Who’s on call?” Bailey asks some of them raise their hands but I don’t since my shift ended, “A big rig flipped over on the five. Incomings about 8 minutes out.”
Helm is still hungry for surgery like us and asks what’s on our minds, “This means that one of us will get to scrub in tonight, right?”
Bailey looks at us confused, “Why would you say that?”
“This morning you said that one of us will get the opportunity to operate today.” Vik clarifies.
The chief looks at us astounded, “What I said was that today you would have the opportunity to prove yourselves ready to scrub in, not that you would scrub in today. Now, seeing as how all of you are doctors, I would think that you were smart enough to understand that difference.” We all stand there shocked at her statement, even me as I also hoped to scrub in on a surgery, “I don’t see anyone moving.” The interns on call exit out, “And what are you all still here for? You just finished your first day as a surgeon. Congratulations, go home.”
Bailey leaves us and I purse my lips at the cruel intention of getting us amped up only to be sourly disappointed in the end. It was like high school all over again, only I didn’t have black hair with green streaks. And instead of a promposal from Connor Lendel it was a surgery I was hoping for.
Casey is just as shocked, “The chief played us.”
I bitterly nod, “Yep like fiddles with MD’s”
Schmitt tries to chime in for some reason, “I mean she technically didn’t say that we-” We all groan and admonish him over his bad timing.
I put my casual clothes on, grab my backpack and get out of the hospital for a much needed power nap.

AN: I've loved the idea of Jo and Lexie being best friends forever and I'm so excited to share this with you all!
……………………………………………………………………
Lexie woke up to a lot of noise at Jo and Alex's house. Pots and pans were banging down in the kitchen, the shower and subsequent fan were running from the bathroom down the hall, and Cristina and Owen were loudly having sex in the other room. She groaned and rolled over in the empty bed, pulling her husband's pillow over her face.
She and Mark had bought a house because the apartment was getting too small for them. Plus they wanted extra rooms for Sofia and any future siblings they had. When they moved out of the apartment they expected that their new house would be ready, but the contractor had found an issue with the plumbing. In the meantime, She and Mark were staying at formerly Meredith’s, now Alex’s house for a few days.
Alex and Jo's place was always noisy, unlike their quiet apartment. Despite several hours of sleep, Lexie was still tired and rolled over trying to doze off again. She and Derek had stayed late clipping a rather tricky aneurysm and she had the morning off. Despite the loud noises around her, soon enough she was able to fall back asleep.
“Good morning Mrs. Sloan,” Mark's smooth voice drifted into her ear as she woke up and felt his feathered lips over her cheek.
“That's Dr. Grey-Sloan to you,” Lexie said as she smiled and he turned to kiss her lips.
“Well, Dr. Grey-Sloan, how did you sleep? Mark asked, pulling back and drying off his wet hair.
“Pretty well, you?”
“Okay, but maybe we should see if we can stay with Derek and Meredith. It's a frat house out there.”
“It's not a frat house,” Lexie said, rolling over and watching Mark get dressed admiring her husband's body. “And Derek and Meredith have the DC thing, we're not getting in the middle of that.”
“Karev is drinking coffee out of a paper cup. Wilson is passed out on the floor of the guest bathroom, so I had to shower in the master bath. Yang and Hunt are going at it like bunnies 24/7, and there's barely any furniture. Our mattress is on the floor Lexie, the floor!”
Lexie bit her lip to hide her smile at her husband's distress. Mark had never had to live with roommates before. Even in college, his parents had paid for him to have his own apartment. At their apartment, they'd never had more than one other person staying with them, except for when they had Sofia and babysat Zola overnight.
“Alex is using paper dishes probably because the dishwasher didn't get started last night. Jo’s got the flu and the toilet in the master bath is broken. Cristina and Hunt aren’t always going at it and Jo said that she and Alex are in the process of buying more furniture. They just can't agree on anything.”
“Yeah, well the sooner the plumbing in our new house is done, the sooner we get out of here,” Mark said, leaning down to kiss her again and Lexie laughed and tilted her head as their lips met. “I’m heading to work, what time will you be in?”
“I don't have to be in till later but I'll meet you for lunch,” Lexie said, pulling him in for one more kiss.
“It’s a date,” Mark said, smiling at her with a twinkle in his eye that she loved so much.
He kissed her goodbye one last time before heading out and Lexie got up and headed down to the kitchen. Cristina and Owen were finishing up their breakfast, running around, trying to get out of the house in time for rounds. She went to grab herself a mug of coffee but put the pot back the second she got a whiff of the foul-smelling drink. Alex must have used some bad beans and Lexie decided to forego coffee and head straight for the shower.
She turned on the hot water in the guest bathroom and let the shower warm up. Then she went over to the cabinet, pushing away the pillows and blankets where Jo and Alex had spent the night on the floor. Lexie grabbed her toiletry bag and went back to the sink only for the door to slam open as Jo ran in. She headed straight for the toilet and immediately vomited.
Lexie ran to kneel beside her friend and rubbed her back as the rest of Jo’s stomach contents came up. Luckily, Jo wasn't sick for very long. When she was finished Jo leaned against the wall and closed her eyes. Lexie put a hand on her forehead, but Jo swatted her away.
“Let me see if you’re still running a temperature,” Lexie insisted, going over to the cabinet and retrieving the thermometer.
“I don't have a temperature,” Jo insisted with a shake of her head.
“You look flushed. Have you been able to keep anything down?” Lexie asked, completely ignoring Jo's protest as she came back with a thermometer.
“I’m not sick,” Jo said as Lexie sat down next to her and tried to put her hand on Jo's forehead again.
“You just threw up, I think that counts as being sick,” Lexie said, crossing her arms and giving Jo a look. “Do I need to call Alex and get answers from him?”
“No, please don’t call Alex. I barely convinced him to go to work today, I'm not sick,” Jo said, biting her lip as she leaned forward and whispered to her. “I think I'm pregnant!”
Jo looked at her with a terrified expression. Lexie went wide-eyed and her jaw dropped.
……………………………………………………………………
Lexie quickly decided they needed to go to the drugstore for an actual test. They both got dressed and ready before they got in the car and headed out. They had barely spoken more than a general acknowledgment of needing a test. As they drove, Lexie looked over at Jo from the driver's seat. She leaned against the window, buried in Alex's oversized hoodie.
The two of them had been best friends since Jo’s first day. Jo had a sort of fight or drive inside of her. She never gave up. She fought for what she believed was right and Lexie admired her for it. They were also both prone to nervousness and squirrely behavior as they often talked each other out of a spiral. Lexie felt like she could confide in Jo and they both would talk to one another about anything and everything. Lexie felt like Jo got her like no one else did and like they had known each other forever. With Jo, Lexie finally felt like she had a best friend. One that wasn't already Meredith's friend. Jo was her person.
“How far along do you think you are?” Lexie asked, breaking the silence.
She remembered Jo complaining about her period cramps exactly six weeks ago, so she could only be that far along.
“I don't know, six weeks or so,” Jo said with a shrug, confirming Lexie's theory.
“What makes you think you're pregnant?”
“I'm throwing up all the time and my period is a week and a half late.”
“Are you sure it’s not just stress from the resident firing? I mean your entire back was covered in hives. Stress can delay a period, you know, and Alex said you had a fever last night.”
“No, it can't be that because Leah was fired a few days ago. Things have gone back to normal, but I'm still puking,” Jo said, shaking her head and rubbing her forehead. “I can't believe this is happening. Alex and I have been so careful. I have an IUD and we've used condoms, not all the time, but still!”
“If so then why do you think you’re pregnant?* Lexie said, glancing over at her again. *Do you have any food aversions, cravings, frequent urination, or breast tenderness?”
“No, well kinda, my boobs hurt, and I've been tired, and of course, I'm puking all the time so I don’t have much of an appetite.”
All of a sudden the realization dawned on Lexie. The symptoms she was describing to Jo were exactly what she had been experiencing the last couple of days. Her period had always been off or barely there due to the birth control she was taking. So she couldn't be sure if she was late. Yet, she had a touch of nausea, her breasts were sore, she suddenly hated the smell of coffee, she had been peeing like crazy, and she was always exhausted.
“What is it? You're making a face, why are you making that face! Do you really think I’m pregnant?” Jo said, her voice growing more panicked as she spoke.
“I don’t know,” Lexie said, knowing that her eyes were as wide as saucers as she glanced over at Jo having stopped at a red light. “But I think I might be pregnant!”
Jo’s eyes widened and her jaw dropped. Then she scrambled to grab the plastic barf bag on the car floor and threw up. Which pretty much summed up how Lexie felt at the sudden realization that she could be pregnant too.
……………………………………………………………………
“Hey, Karev,” Mark said, spotting Alex at the Nurses’ station and walking over to him. “What time is the plumber supposed to be there to fix your toilet?
“Um, I think sometime this evening,” Alex said looking up from his tablet. “Why?”
“No reason,” Mark said with a shrug.
Alex nodded and went back to looking at his chart. Despite how close Jo and Lexie were, Alex and Mark had only hung out when the girls did. Mark felt weird hanging out with the former residence alone. He stood next to the nurse’s station wondering how to talk to him.
“Do you need anything else, Sloan?” Alex said slowly, looking back at him and raising his eyebrows. He seemed just as uncomfortable as Mark did.
“Has Jo said anything about Lexie feeling off recently?” Mark asked, raising an eyebrow.
Most of the time Lexie and Jo kept their conversations between themselves. However, occasionally Lexie would tell him about whatever was going on with Jo, so he figured Jo did the same with Alex.
“She's your wife, shouldn't you already know what’s going on?” Alex asked with a smirk and a raised eyebrow in return.
“She keeps brushing me off,” Mark said, leaning against the desk. “I know something was off with her. I just can't put my finger on it. I know she hasn't been feeling well, but I have a feeling it’s more than that.”
“Eh, she's probably just got the flu like Jo does,” Alex said with a shrug. “They hang out all the time. I'm surprised they aren't both sick already.”
“Maybe, Lexie was a little nauseous yesterday,” Mark said, watching a few of the other staff walk by. “Is that how it started for Jo?”
“Yeah, it was that and a fever,” Alex nodded, looking out from his chart with a frown.
“But she’s doing better, yeah?” Mark asked not sure if it was his place to ask.
“Yeah, she was asleep in our bed when I left,” Alex said, with a shrug of his shoulders.
He tried to seem nonchalant about it, but Mark saw him pull out his phone and check his messages from Jo. His frown deepened when he saw there were no new messages.
Mark nodded thinking about Lexie. It was probably just the flu but. “It just feels like it’s more, and I get the feeling that she's trying to hide it from me.”
“Well, I'm sure whatever it is, she'll tell you eventually. Lexie's not one to keep secrets,” Alex said, giving him a reassuring nod.
Thanks, Mark said, breathing out a sigh of relief. "You're probably right.*
*Probably?* Alex asked with a smile as Mark chuckled.
“Should we be friends now because Lexie and Jo are each other's person?” Mark asked, with a shrug.
They had spent a lot more time around each other now that he and Lexie were crashing at the house. Still, he wasn't sure if he wanted to be friends with Alex.
“Nope,” Alex immediately said as he turned to walk away.
“I take offense to that Karev,” Mark called after him, but Alex just laughed.
Still, Mark couldn't help but smile. It was that playful banter that the two of them had. Now, he wondered if it would grow into an actual friendship.
……………………………………………………………………
The light turned green and the smell of the vomit in the car made Lexie's stomach churn as Jo tied up the plastic bag and set it on the floor. She decided to make a left turn and head straight for the hospital instead of the pharmacy. She was hoping Jo wouldn't notice their sudden change of directions, but of course she did.
“No Lexie, please I don't take us to the hospital. I don't want anyone seeing me like this,” Jo pleaded with her.
“As your chief resident, I am insisting that we get blood tests. We need to know for sure,” Lexie said, taking a deep breath and trying to calm her nerves.
“You're not my chief resident anymore,” Jo said, crossing her arms and glaring at her.
“No, I'm a fellow, which means you definitely have to listen to me,” Lexie said glaring right back at her. Jo pouted and sat back in the seat as Lexie pulled into the hospital parking lot.
Lexie had to practically drag Jo into the hospital, but they managed to sneak in and occupy an empty patient room. There they each took each other's blood and sent it to the lab. Jo got sick again and Lexie held back her hair, tying it into a bun. Lexie thought about admitting Jo just in case. Her forehead was hot to the touch and she admitted to not having kept anything down since yesterday morning. As Jo finished spitting in the bowl, she leaned against the wall. Lexie put her arm around her shoulder as they leaned their heads against each other.
“What are you going to do if you're pregnant?” Lexie asked, staring at the wall of the bathroom.
“I don’t know,” Jo whispered as she grabbed Lexie’s hand. She intertwined their fingers, as they often did, and gave her hand a squeeze. “What about you? Are you ready to be a mom?”
“Yeah, I’m ready for kids,” Lexie said and for the first time, she was.
Lexie smiled and looked over at Jo to see a smile spread across her face as well they both giggled and put their foreheads together.
“I don't know if I'm ready, I'm only a second-year resident and Alex is never home. We're both focused on our work right now. We haven't even talked about kids, other than the fact that we don't want them right now,” Jo said, letting out a sigh and shaking her head. “But you and Mark, you talked about this or at least the possibility of it. This is what you want, yeah?”
“Yeah, it is,” Lexie said as a smile spread across her face.
She and Mark had talked about whether they wanted kids now or in a year, now that she had passed her boards, even though she was still doing her fellowship with Derek. They hadn't decided to start trying yet. Something that Jo knew all about, of course. Yet, now that it was in front of her though, Lexie was excited. She felt ready and she knew that Mark would be over the moon.
“Will you be my kid’s aunt and can I be your kid’s aunt?” Jo asked, giving her a nervous smile. “I mean, I know you have Meredith and your other sister, but I don't have anybody and I want my kids to have a family, a big family.”
“Of course, I'll be your kids' aunt and you can be my kid's aunt. You're my best friend, Jo, we’re family,” Lexie said, giving Jo’s shoulders a squeeze. “Does that mean you're thinking about keeping it, if you're pregnant?”
Before Jo could respond, Stephanie came in with their labs, handing them to Lexie. Lexie had specifically asked nurse Riley to deliver her their labs themselves but Riley was never good at listening to her, or anybody else. Thankfully Stephanie was Jo's other best friend and she could keep a secret. Stephanie looked Jo up and down from when she stood in the doorway of the bathroom. “You look like shit.”
“Shut up, I'm having a crisis here,” Jo said glaring at her.
“No, you're not, you just have the stomach flu,” Lexie said, a bit disappointed that she wouldn't get the chance to be Jo's kids' aunt just yet, as she read over Jo's labs.
“Oh thank God,” Jo said as she put a hand on her chest and leaned her head back. “Wait, what about you?”
Lexie took a deep breath and looked at the piece of paper scanning for her HCG levels. She stared at the words before looking over at the numbers. Her HCG levels are in the 10,000s. She was definitely pregnant.
The whole world faded away as Lexie stared at those numbers. Thoughts about what life would be like filtered through her head. Pregnancy, birth, babies, toddlers, kids, and teenagers. Life with their baby and Mark. She could see it all now, a little baby that would be theirs. She could imagine them with Mark's blue eyes and her brown hair. She hoped they'd smile like him and have his nose.
“What's going on? Wait, did you two think you were pregnant or something?” Stephanie said, looking between the two of them.
“What, no,” Jo tried, and failed to lie to her.
“Oh my god, you did!” Stephanie said, her eyes going wide as a smile spread across her face.
“Shut up, I’m sick you can't bully me or I’ll infect you.”
“No, you stay away from me,” Stephanie said, holding up her hand and taking a step back. “I’ve seen how bad you are. I do not want that.”
“Okay, enough,” Lexie shouted, coming back to the moment as she looked between the two of them and stood up, stepping into her toll as a physician. “Dr. Edwards prep the room and get an IV going on Dr. Wilson. Jo, you're dehydrated, so I'm admitting you for fluids and rest. Give her one tablet of Ondansetron and see if she’ll keep down some water before moving to solids. Page me if there are any changes or if she can't keep anything down.”
“No, I wanna go home,” Jo protested as she tried to stand up, but swayed and turned pale before she sat back down.
“I’ll call Alex if you protest,” Lexie said, knowing that threat would get Jo to listen as she turned away. As she left the bathroom, however, Alex swung open the door to the room.
“Where’s Jo?” Alex said with a panicked look in his eyes.
“She's in the bathroom. She's okay Alex, she’s just a little dehydrated and I'm going to have Edward start an IV on her,” Lexie said, turning around as he ignored her and raced into the bathroom. The second he saw Jo, he knelt down next to her, wrapping his arms around her.
“Are you okay? One of the nurses said you were here,” Alex said, moving to pull Jo into his lap.
“She hasn't been able to keep anything down so I brought her in for fluids and rest,” Lexie explained as she watched Alex check Jo over, putting a hand on her forehead. Unlike with her, Jo didn't push him away and instead, leaned into Alex’s touch.
“I don't want to, can't I just go home?”
“Let's get you set up with some IV fluids and some nausea medication, then we can go home,” Alex said as he got up and pulled Jo up with him before picking her up and carrying her over to the bed.
Lexie watched Alex brush the hair out of Jo's face and she knew that she was leaving her friend in good hands. She had seen Alex in love before, but not like it was with Jo. They weren't just lovers, they were partners and they were good for each other. Jo let him take care of her, when she resisted everyone else. And Alex cared for her very deeply, more so than he had for anyone else. She walked over to the door before Jo caught her trying to sneak out.
“Wait, Lexie!” Jo said, reaching her arm out to her.
Lexie turned around, She couldn't help the smile that spread across her face. The second Jo saw her, she squealed and Lexie couldn't help but share in her excitement. Stephanie and Alex looked between them, confused, before Stephanie’s eyes widened and her jaw dropped as she looked at Lexie.
“You have to surprise him and not just tell him. Do it over dinner or do something cute like with a cupcake, okay!” Jo insisted as Alex looked as confused as ever as he watched their exchange.
“What’s going on?” Alex asked, but they both ignored him.
“I’ll do something cute I promise, but you just get some rest and I'll check on you later,” Lexie said before she left the room and went off in search of Mark.
She knew that Jo was right and she wanted to tell Mark in some special way. But first, she wanted to see him. Lexie walked down the hall lost in thought, before she ran into Meredith.
“Hey, Mark said you were sleeping in today. What are you doing here so early?” Meredith said, greeting Lexie with a smile as she turned around to walk beside her.
“Oh well, umm, Jo was sick so I brought her in and I figured out that I'm pregnant,” Lexie said, shrugging her shoulders as she smiled. “Surprise.”
Meredith's face instantly lit up as she grabbed Lexie's arm and pulled her down the hall away from the nurse’s station.
“Oh my god, you're pregnant!” Meredith squealed and Lexie smiled letting out a laugh of excitement as she pulled her in for a hug. “I'm going to be an auntie! How long have you known? Have you told Mark yet?”
“I've known for 2 and 1/2 minutes. I haven't told Mark, and yes you're going to be an auntie,” Lexie said with a smile as Meredith laughed.
“Well you have to tell Mark soon,” Meredith said with a nod. “And with the new house you guys are moving into, it’s perfect timing.”
“Jo said to do something cute, tell him with cupcakes, but I don't know how to present a piece of paper to him and make it cute,” Lexie said, looking down at her labs in her hand and folding them carefully to put away in her pocket.
“Jo Wilson knew before me!” Meredith said, frowning as she smacked Lexie’s arm.
“Don't hit me. I'm pregnant,” Lexie said, rubbing her arm. “Jo knew because we both thought we were pregnant and so we got our labs together.”
“Jo’s pregnant?!”
“No, she just has the flu.”
“Oh thank god,” Meredith said, putting a hand on her chest and letting out a breath of relief. “The world does not need another evil spawn right now.”
“Mer that's so mean,” Lexie said, smacking Meredith’s arm.
“What, it's true,” Meredith said, before linking their arms and leading her down the hall. “Come on. Jo was right, it has to be cute and I'm sure April knows the perfect place to get the cupcakes.”
……………………………………………………………………
Lexie waved to Meredith as she drove off, having dropped her off at the new house with one box of cupcakes. She and Meredith had talked before they both got pulled into work. Despite her promise to meet Mark for lunch she found herself avoiding him, lest she spill her secret right away. Finally, the day had ended and Meredith helped her with their plan before Meredith dropped her off at their new house.
The bungalow was a little blue house with a stone porch in the Queen Anne neighborhood. It was just a few blocks away from Meredith’s old house and a five minute drive to the hospital. It was the perfect house, with four bedrooms and an open floor plan kitchen and living room with a decent-sized backyard that would be perfect for Sophia and their future kids. Lexie smiled as she thought of the baby she was carrying growing up in this house. She glanced at Mark's text again confirming that he was only a few minutes away as she sat on the porch stairs.
She didn't have to wait long as Mark's car soon pulled up into the driveway. He got out of the car and did a little hop as he jogged over to her. His smile was so bright and happy as his eyes crinkled. Lexie bit her lips as she watched him, trying to keep her happiness contained until she told him. She knew he was going to be so happy when she told him. It was the one thing that he’d wanted the entire time they had been together.
“Hey,” Mark said, bending down to give her a quick peck before he sat next to her on the steps and put his arm around her.
Lexie leaned into him and he kissed her cheek again as his beard, mustache, and goatee scratched her cheek, but she didn’t mind. “Hi.”
“So what's up?” Mark said, setting her with the look and a single raised eyebrow. “And don't tell me it's about the tile in the kitchen, I know you, Lexie. What is going on?”
His expression changed from amused to concerned as he studied her face, but she just smiled and handed him the box of cupcakes. Mark raised his eyebrow again, but just opened the box. Inside were two cupcakes, one blue and one pink with a little pair of fondant baby bottles and booties with a little banner that said ‘Hello Daddy.’ Mark's jaw dropped as he stared down at them.
“I’m pregnant, we are going to have a baby!” Lexie said, letting a smile fill her face, yet her voice seemed too loud against his quiet shock.
“For real you're pregnant?” Mark asked, looking up at her in astonishment as he reached out and placed a hand on her stomach. Lexie just smiled and nodded as she put her hand over his. “Oh my God, we're having a baby!”
Mark smiled so beautifully big and wide and his excitement seemed to radiate off of him. He quickly set down the cupcakes and wrapped his arms around her. He kissed her, the excitement between them like fireworks on her lips. She wrapped her arms around his neck and his hands settled on her waist. They kissed for a moment before Lexie pulled back and leaned her head against his forehead.
“Are you excited?” Lexie asked, already knowing the answer.
“Yes!” Mark said quickly, pecking her lips again. “But are you? This wasn't planned, I mean, I know we talked about having kids soon, but I want to make sure you're ready for this, Lexie.”
“Yes,” Lexie said, letting a smile slip across her cheeks as she let out a breath of excitement. “I’m so happy and so excited to have a baby with you.”
For the longest time, she wasn't ready to have a family with Mark. When they started dating she was just twenty-four and she wanted to enjoy life and have her career. Mark was at a different stage in his life, he was ready to settle down and have a family. The two of them clashed on this, but now they were finally on the same page. Mark agreed to wait until she was an attending to try for kids and Lexie was ready to have them. She had her career and her 20s were behind her. They had settled into their lives together and everything was good between them. And now they had their baby.
“This is going to be so great Lexie,” Mark said, smiling so wide and his eyes sparkled like the stars above her. “We're going to have a baby. You and me as a family. My whole life, I watched my friends marry and have families of their own, Derek and Meredith, Callie and Arizona, hell, even Jackson got married before we did. But the day you agreed to marry me and this day, the day you told me we were having a baby are the happiest days of my life. They’re worth the wait and I can't wait to have even more happy days with you.”
“I love you, Mark Sloan,” Lexie said leaning in to give him a quick kiss. “Even if you're the sappiest person I have ever met.”
Mark laughed as Lexie giggled and she leaned against him. She picked up the cupcakes and took off the decorations before she handed one to him and grabbed the other one for herself. As Mark took a bite of the cupcake he got frosting all over his big nose and she reached out to wipe the frosting away. Lexie smiled as she studied his face, she loved his nose, his eyes, and the way he smiled. She'd be delighted if their baby looked exactly like him.
They finished the cupcakes and Mark kissed the frosting off her lips before pulling her up as they walked to the car. It had been a long day, full of surprises and excitement. Lexie leaned her head on his chest as Mark led her around to the passenger side door and opened it for her. He grabbed her hand as he helped her in. Then he quickly did her seatbelt for her before jogging around to the driver's side and getting in.
“Alright, Dr. Grey-Sloan, ready to head back to the frat house?” Mark said turning on the car and turning on the radio to her favorite pop station.
“Why, yes I am Dr. Sloan,” Lexie said with a giggle as Mark sent her one last wink before he turned his eyes to the road and drove them home.
Lexie turned up the volume and started singing along. She had just enough time to listen to a few songs before they pulled up to the frat house. Again Mark came around to her side of the car and opened her door for her. He took her hand and wrapped an arm around her waist as they walked inside.
They walked into the house and heard the TV on. Lexie walked into the living room to see Jo and Alex lounging on the couch. Alex was upright with his feet propped up on the coffee table. While Jo was laying sideways across his lap as he held her. As they came in, Jo picked up her head to greet them.
“Hey, you so did you tell him yet?” Jo asked with a smile, despite how tired she looked.
“I did!” Lexie said as the two of them shared a pair of exciting smiles.
“Are you going to tell me what this is all about?” Alex asked, looking between the two of them with a raised eyebrow.
“Nope,” Jo said as she glanced up at him with a smile and Lexie giggled.
“We’ll tell you soon enough, Alex,” Lexie said with a smirk, looking back at Mark.
Alex just sighed and shook his head, but he was placated when Jo reached up and kissed his cheek. Lexie went over to sit next to Jo, but Mark quickly intervened by pulling Lexie back with the hand around her waist.
“No way am I letting you get anywhere near… that,” Mark said, gesturing to Jo with his hand.
“I'm not that sick,” Jo said with an eye roll.
“Yes, you are. You two should definitely stay away,” Alex said, running his fingers across her forehead and pulling back the sweaty little hairs that stuck to her skin.
“He's lying,” Jo said, with a yawn as she covered her mouth.
“Sure he is,” Mark said sarcastically as he and Alex shared a look and Lexie laughed.
“We should be getting to bed anyway,” Alex said, as he turned off the TV with the remote, then stood up and slipped out from under her.
“But I want to finish the season. We only have two episodes left,” Jo protested, with a pout.
“We can finish it tomorrow,” Alex said before quickly scooping her up and carrying her bridal style.
To Lexie's surprise, Jo barely protested. Instead, she laid her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes. Lexie waved goodbye to them as they walked past. Jo waved back before they disappeared up the stairs.
Lexie then let out a side as she went to sit on the couch before Mark pulled her back again. “Wait, I've got to spray it down with Lysol or something before I'm letting you anywhere near that. On second thought, maybe we should consider getting a hotel until Wilson's better.”
“Don't be ridiculous,” Lexie said with an eye roll, but she walked to the kitchen instead.
“I'm not being ridiculous, I'm protecting the mother of my child,” Mark said as he followed her into the kitchen where she saw Owen and Christina eating takeout at the island.
“Hey you guys,” Lexie greeted them as they quickly greeted her back.
“How come you guys are back so late?” Cristina asked as she took another bite of the udon noodles.
“Oh we just stopped by the house to look over things for a second,” Mark said, with a bigger grin than he should’ve had as he looked over at her.
“It's pretty late for that,” Owen said, but they just both shrugged and Cristina and Owen seemed to accept their answer.
Lexie went over to the fridge staring at it for a second before Mark came up behind her. “Anything strike your fancy? If not, could I make you dinner?”
“Oh butter pasta sounds really good,” Lexie, in excitement as she turned around and went to the cabinet to grab the box of pasta.
“Pasta it is,” Mark said as he grabbed the butter and parmesan cheese from the refrigerator to get started the meal for her.
“Are you going to cook for me every night?” Lexie asked with a smile as she handed him the box of pasta.
“Well I’ve got to make sure you stay healthy,” Mark said as the two of them shared a smile and their eyes danced with excitement.
“What’s going on between you two?” Christina asked, giving them a weary look.
“Nothing,” Lexie said, barely giving Cristina a glance.
“Just a whole lot of love,” Mark said with a smile, his eyes soft and bright as he stared at her wholeheartedly and Lexie could only smile back with the same loving look.

Greys Anatomy - Goodbye Dr Evil Spawn
So as much as I was a massive Izzy and Alex shipper back in they greys hey days.... I do not know how I feel about this ending (and I should be happy).
I want to make it known I haven’t actually seen the last couple of seasons of greys but I didn’t mind Alex and Jo as a couple.
Now I always figured we would someday hear about the kids Izzy had from when she froze her eggs using Alex’s sperm but I did not expect it to be like this.
Everyone is saying the creators blew 16 years of character development- I don’t completely agree. He would do anything for kids - especially his ! So I see him wanting to be apart of their lives - but just leaving Jo like that and writing letters saying he is now happily back together with Izzy and it’s like they were never apart .... uhhhhhh yeah I don’t know.
... I kinda would have rather he died but at the same time I loved Alex and Izzy (hopefully she isn’t to hung up on dead Denny anymore *sorry*) but poor Jo 😢
Anyway goodbye Alex
