Mashed up some roses with salt and rain water and then added a bit of vodka for preservation to make a rose potion! Fantastic for spells involving any type of love, sex, and can even make a great offering to deities that are associated with roses!
Edit: probably shouldn’t drink this!

That Midwest Magick
Tumblr media
Witchcraft in the American Midwest is a complex blend of indigenous traditions, European folk magick, spiritualism, and the influence of modern witchcraft movements. Unlike New England, which is infamous for its witch trials, the Midwest has a more subtle but rich history of magickal practices, folk beliefs, and occult traditions that have shaped the region’s spiritual landscape.
Indigenous Traditions and Early Beliefs
Before European settlers arrived, the Midwest was home to numerous Native American tribes, including the Lakota, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Ho-Chunk. Many indigenous spiritual traditions involved rituals, spirit communication, and herbal healing, practices that were later viewed as "witchcraft" by European settlers.
Common Indigenous Spiritual Practices:
Shamanic Healing - Medicine people or shamans used herbs, songs, and rituals to heal illnesses and communicate with spirits.
Dreamwork & Vision Quests - Dreams and visions were seen as powerful messages from the spirit world.
Shape-shifting Legends - Many tribes had stories of beings that could transform between human and animal forms, such as the Wendigo or the Skinwalker.
When settlers arrived, they often misunderstood these practices, sometimes labeling indigenous spiritual leaders as witches or sorcerers. The suppression of indigenous spirituality through boarding schools and forced Christianization led to many traditional practices being hidden or adapted.
Tumblr media
European Settlers and Folk Magick
The Midwest was settled by diverse groups, including Germans, Scandinavians, Irish, and Eastern Europeans, each bringing their own folk magick traditions.
German Powwow & Braucherei - German immigrants brought Powwow (also called Braucherei), a Christian folk magick system that blended prayer, herbalism, and magical charms for healing and protection. Powwow practitioners were sometimes accused of practicing witchcraft, but the tradition survived in rural Midwestern communities.
Scandinavian Trolldom - Scandinavian settlers brought Trolldom, a form of folk magick that included protective charms, rune work, and spells to ward off evil. Many Midwestern Norwegians and Swedes retained aspects of their magical traditions in the form of folk remedies and rituals for protection.
Irish & Scottish Witch Lore
Settlers of Irish and Scottish descent brought Faerie Beliefs and Second Sight traditions, which influenced local folklore. Stories of banshees, faerie rings, and "the Evil Eye" persisted in rural communities.
Witchcraft Accusations in the Midwest
While the Midwest did not experience the large-scale witch hunts of New England, accusations of witchcraft did occur in rural communities, especially in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Cases of Witchcraft Accusations:
The "Hex Murder" of York County, Pennsylvania (1928) - Although not in the Midwest, this case involved a Powwow healer who was murdered because his client believed he had been cursed. It highlighted the persistence of belief in hexes and folk magick in rural America.
Witch Scares in Rural Communities - Throughout the Midwest, stories circulated of "witches" who could curse livestock, cause illness, or use the Evil Eye. These fears often led to quiet shunning rather than full-blown trials.
Tumblr media
The Rise of Spiritualism and Occult Movements
The Midwest played a significant role in the Spiritualist movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Spiritualism—centered on communicating with the dead—was often seen as a blend of science, religion, and occult practice.
Key Spiritualist Centers in the Midwest:
Camp Chesterfield (Indiana) - A spiritualist community founded in the late 19th century, which remains active today.
Lily Dale Assembly (New York, but influential in the Midwest) - A center for mediums that inspired similar gatherings in Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois.
Harry Houdini (Wisconsin-born Magician & Skeptic) - Houdini, originally from Appleton, Wisconsin, became famous for exposing fraudulent spiritualists, highlighting the region’s deep engagement with occult practices.
Many Midwestern towns had local mediums, table-tipping séances, and Ouija board enthusiasts, blending occultism with folk spirituality.
20th-Century Witchcraft and the Occult Revival
By the mid-20th century, British Wicca and other forms of modern witchcraft spread to the Midwest. Key developments include:
Raymond Buckland's Influence - Though Buckland introduced Wicca in New York, his teachings spread widely through the Midwest in the 1960s and 1970s.
Festivals and Pagan Gatherings - Events like Pagan Spirit Gathering (PSG), held in the Midwest since the 1980s, became major hubs for modern witches and pagans.
Tumblr media
Hoodoo and Folk Magick in Midwestern Cities
Cities like Chicago, Detroit, and St. Louis became centers for Hoodoo, a form of African American folk magick that includes rootwork, candle magick, and mojo bags. The Great Migration brought these traditions from the South, influencing local magickal practices.
Occult Bookstores & Influences
The Occult Bookstore (Chicago, IL) - One of the oldest metaphysical bookstores in the U.S., operating since 1918.
The Buckland Museum of Witchcraft & Magick (Cleveland, OH) - Founded to preserve the history of witchcraft and the occult.
Modern Practices and Traditions
The Midwest remains a thriving area for witchcraft, paganism, and occult traditions. Some key features include:
Eclectic Witchcraft - Many practitioners blend Wicca, folk magic, and indigenous spirituality.
Revival of Traditional Witchcraft - Some Midwestern witches focus on Appalachian and Ozark folk magic, connecting with their ancestral roots.
Urban Witchcraft - Cities like Chicago and Minneapolis have vibrant witchcraft communities, including LGBTQ+ and activist-oriented witches.
Midwestern Witchcraft Gatherings & Groups
Pagan Spirit Gathering (PSG) - A major annual pagan and witchcraft festival.
Michigan Pagan Fest - A gathering for witches, pagans, and occultists.
Local Covens & Meetup Groups - Many small covens and informal groups operate throughout the Midwest.
The history of witchcraft in the American Midwest is one of quiet resilience and adaptation. From indigenous spirituality to European folk magic, from 19th-century spiritualism to the modern occult revival, the Midwest has fostered a unique blend of mystical traditions. Today, it continues to be a thriving center for magical practitioners, blending old traditions with new interpretations.

[Title]: Taglocks: How to Target a Person or Place
Related to Taglocks
Threshold Theory Binding Basics Introduction to Gnosis Energy Work Fundamentals Anchors Energetic Constructs Spell Logs Path of Least Resistance Blood Magic Spellcasting Basics
Introduction
A taglock stands as a fundamental element of spellcasting, bridging the material world with the energies, places, and people practitioners seek to influence. A taglock is, at its core, a tangible object that establishes a direct link to a specific target. This object serves as a conduit through which energy can be directed, manipulated, or harnessed in various spellwork and ritualistic practices.
The term "taglock" itself is derived from the concept of 'tagging' or marking something with a specific identifier, and 'lock,' which implies securing or anchoring a connection. Thus, a taglock effectively anchors the essence or energy of a person, place, or thing to the practitioner’s ritualistic focus. This tangible item could be something inherently connected to the target, such as a personal belonging or a biological sample, thereby ensuring that the magical workings are precise and targeted.
History
The use of objects to establish a connection with a person, place, or entity is a practice that can be traced back to ancient civilizations. The principles underlying taglocks are fundamentally tied to the broader concepts of sympathetic magic and animism, both of which have been integral to human spirituality and ritualistic practices for millennia.
Ancient Civilizations
Mesopotamia and Egypt: In ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian cultures, magic was an integral part of daily life and religious practice. Objects such as amulets, talismans, and personal artifacts were often used to protect, heal, or curse individuals. These items were believed to carry the essence or influence of the person or deity they were associated with. For instance, in ancient Egypt, hair, nails, or pieces of clothing were sometimes used in magical rituals to exert influence over an individual, embodying the early concept of taglocks.
Greece and Rome: The Greco-Roman world also embraced the use of personal items in magic. The Greek Magical Papyri, a collection of ancient magical texts, includes numerous spells that call for the use of personal objects such as hair, nails, and garments. These items were believed to create a sympathetic link to the target, enabling the practitioner to influence them from a distance. This practice reflects the underlying principle of sympathetic magic, where "like affects like," a foundational concept for the use of taglocks.
Medieval and Renaissance Europe
Folk Magic and Witchcraft: In medieval Europe, the use of personal items in folk magic and witchcraft was widespread. Cunning folk, wise women, and witches often employed objects belonging to their clients or targets in their spells and rituals. These objects served as conduits for magical influence, much like modern taglocks. For example, poppets (dolls representing individuals) were frequently stuffed with hair, nails, or clothing scraps from the person they were intended to influence.
Grimoires and Magical Texts: The grimoires and magical texts of the Renaissance period also provide evidence of the use of personal items in magic. The "Key of Solomon," a well-known grimoire, includes instructions for using personal items in rituals to bind or influence others. The "Malleus Maleficarum," a notorious witch-hunting manual, documents the belief in and fear of witches using such items to cast spells.
Indigenous and Non-Western Cultures
African Diasporic Traditions: In various traditional religions and spiritual practices, the use of personal items for magical purposes is common. For example, in Vodou and Hoodoo, personal items such as hair, clothing, and personal effects are used in rituals and spellwork to create a link to the target. These items, often referred to as "personal concerns," function similarly to taglocks by establishing a direct connection between the practitioner and the individual they wish to influence.
Asian Traditions: In Asian cultures, particularly in traditional Chinese and Japanese practices, the use of personal items in magic and healing is also prevalent. In Chinese folk religion and Taoist magic, personal items are used in rituals to heal or protect individuals. Similarly, in Shinto practices in Japan, personal items can be used in purification and protective rituals.
Modern Revival and Adaptation
Contemporary Witchcraft: The modern revival of witchcraft, particularly since the mid-20th century, has seen a resurgence in the use of taglocks. Contemporary practitioners draw on historical and cross-cultural practices, adapting the use of personal items to fit modern magical frameworks. Books on witchcraft and magic frequently discuss the use of taglocks, emphasizing their importance in creating a tangible link to the target.
Neo-Pagan & Occultist Movements: Neo-Pagan movements, such as various forms of Wicca, have incorporated the concept of taglocks into their practices. These movements often emphasize the importance of personal connection and the use of physical objects to ground and direct magical energy. While these practices have evolved, they continue to reflect the ancient principles of sympathetic magic and the use of personal items to establish a magical connection.
Tumblr media
How do Taglocks Work?
Energetic Connection and Sympathetic Magic
In the practice of traditional witchcraft, the efficacy of a taglock lies in its ability to establish a connection between the anchored spell and the target. This connection is primarily rooted in the principles of sympathetic magic, a foundational concept that posits that objects can influence one another through their inherent similarities or direct associations; as well as energetic entanglement, the process through which identical energetic compounds can interact without direct spatial contact.
Sympathetic magic operates on the premise that a taglock, due to its intimate connection with the target, acts as a proxy or representative. The energy directed towards the taglock is believed to transfer seamlessly to the target, facilitating the intended transformation or influence. This is often articulated through the maxim "like effects like," underscoring the principle that items connected by similarity or direct contact can impact each other even when physically separated.
The energetic link established through a taglock is akin to an invisible thread that connects the practitioner’s will to the target. This thread is not a physical entity but an energetic conduit through which influence flows. The strength and clarity of this connection depend on the nature of the taglock and the amount of genetic material it carries. For instance, a strand of hair or a piece of clothing with trace amounts of skin cells creates a more potent connection than a mere photograph or written name. This is due to the energetic compounds that are unique to each person’s genetic sequence and their higher probability to be energetically entangled. While a sympathetic connection works well in most situations, having an energetic connection is significantly more reliable.
Incorporating Taglocks into Spellwork
Anchoring is a necessary step in the utilization of taglocks, involving the establishment of a lasting connection between the taglock and the target within a spell. This process entails affixing the taglock firmly to the desired magical outcome, thereby ensuring that the energy directed through the taglock manifests effectively in the target’s life. Anchoring is not merely about physical attachment but the energetic binding of the taglock to the spell's energetic design.
To anchor a taglock, the practitioner must first select a taglock that has a strong and clear connection to the target. The effectiveness of anchoring is directly proportional to the relevance and potency of the chosen taglock. The next step involves ritually preparing the taglock. This can include cleansing the taglock to remove any extraneous energies, thereby ensuring that it is a pure conduit for the spell’s purpose. Common methods of cleansing include using elements like water, fire, or salt, each method tailored to the nature of the taglock and the spell.
Once cleansed, the practitioner imbues the taglock with the desired energy through a ritual. This may involve chanting, the use of symbols, or the invocation of natural forces to charge the taglock. The ritual acts as a ceremonial binding, infusing the taglock with the energy necessary to enact the spell’s purpose. During this process, the practitioner focuses intensely on the connection between the taglock and the target, reinforcing the energetic link.
Finally, the taglock is integrated into the spell structure. This can be achieved by pulling an energetic conduit from the taglock and into the spell’s anchor. This way, a solid circuit can be established. The key is to position the taglock in a manner that aligns with the natural flow of energy, ensuring that the spell’s influence is directed towards the target with minimal resistance. Just placing a taglock into a jar with other elements has a chance of establishing its own energetic connection, however it is not very likely.
Tumblr media
Unbinding Taglocks
Energetic Dismantling
The most effective method of unbinding a taglock is energetic dismantling, which requires the careful and deliberate dismantling of the energetic connections that have been established during its use. Energetic dismantling is a method that involves consciously deconstructing the energic structures and pathways that link the taglock to its target. This process ensures that the influences exerted through the taglock are effectively neutralized, preventing any residual effects from lingering.
The practitioner utilizes their energetic awareness in order to visually and mentally map out the energetic connections emanating from the taglock. This step is crucial, as it allows for a clear understanding of how the energy has been structured and directed. Once these connections are identified, the practitioner then introduces energetic compounds that are of the opposite frequencies of the energetic connections. This will cause the energetic connections to cancel out and become inert.
After all the connections have been severed, the practitioner proceeds to cleanse the taglock to remove any residual energy. This can be done using elements such as water, salt, or incense, depending on the nature of the taglock and the preferences of the practitioner. The cleansing process ensures that the taglock is fully neutralized, rendering it inert and free from any remaining influence.
Anchor Destruction
Anchor destruction is a more direct and often physical approach to unbinding taglocks. This method involves the literal destruction of the taglock itself, effectively dismantling the anchor that connects it to the target. Anchor destruction is particularly effective when the taglock is a physical object that can be easily manipulated or disposed of.
The first step in anchor destruction is to identify the nature of the taglock and choose an appropriate method of destruction. For physical objects, this could involve burning, breaking, or burying the taglock. Each method carries its own symbolic significance and energetic impact. For instance, burning a taglock in a fire ritual symbolizes purification and transformation, reducing the object to ashes and dispersing its energy into the air. Breaking the taglock into pieces represents a forceful severing of the connection, while burying it in the earth signifies grounding and neutralization.
During the destruction, the practitioner may recite incantations or prayers to reinforce the unbinding process, so long as they do not cause the practitioner to break their state of gnosis. This could serve to solidify the practitioner's will and direct the energy towards severing the connection. As before, cleansing is also recommended afterwards.
Cord Cutting (Not candle divination)
Cord cutting is a technique used to sever the energetic cords or ties that bind the taglock to its target. These cords represent the strings of fate, or channels through which energy flows, maintaining the connection established by the taglock. Cord cutting is a powerful method for releasing these ties, allowing both the practitioner and the target to move forward unencumbered.
To perform a cord-cutting ritual, the practitioner begins by grounding and centering themselves, creating a stable foundation for the work ahead. The taglock is then placed before the practitioner, and a clear intention to sever the energetic cords is set. This intention is crucial, as it directs the focus and power of the ritual.
A common tool for cord cutting is a ritual knife or athame, though other tools such as scissors or even one’s hands can be used depending on the practitioner’s preference. The practitioner then uses their awareness to feel for the energetic cords extending from the taglock and uses the tool to cut through these cords. Each cut is made with deliberate precision.
During the process, the practitioner may also employ visualization techniques to enhance the effectiveness of the ritual. This could involve imagining the cords dissolving into light, evaporating like mist, or being absorbed back into the earth. These visualizations help to solidify the disconnection on both an energetic and psychological level so long as one is aware that visualization in and of itself is not a spell nor energy work.
After the cords have been cut, the practitioner performs a cleansing ritual to purify the space and themselves. This ensures that any residual energy from the cords is fully cleared away, preventing any unintended consequences or lingering attachments. The taglock, now devoid of its energetic ties, can be safely disposed of or repurposed as desired.
Cord cutting not only releases the target from the influence of the taglock but also frees the practitioner from the energetic investment in the spell. This liberation allows for a fresh start, unburdened by the previous connections, and opens the way for new magical endeavors.
Tumblr media
Taglock Alternatives
Taglock alternatives are useful in situations where obtaining a physical item linked to the target is impractical or impossible, such as when working at a distance or in covert operations. Methods like visualizations, sigils, memories, elemental representations, and astrological correspondences may still establish a sympathetic link to the target. However, these alternatives often lack the direct energetic connection that taglocks provide, making them less efficient. The inherent uncertainty and reduced potency of these methods can lead to weaker or less reliable spell outcomes, requiring greater effort and near flawless spell design from the practitioner to achieve the desired effects.
Sigils and Symbols: Creating a unique symbol or sigil that represents the target can be a powerful tool. This symbol can be charged with energy and intent to direct the spell's effect.
Visualization Techniques: Instead of using a physical object, practitioners can employ detailed mental images of the target. This involves deeply focusing on the target’s attributes and characteristics during the spellcasting process.
Memories of an individual or location: Using specific memories that encapsulate the essence or identity of the target can serve as a focal point. Repeatedly recalling or chanting the target’s name or a descriptive phrase can help direct the spell.
Elemental Representations: Associating the target with a particular element (earth, air, fire, water) and using that element in the spell can establish a connection. For example, water could be used to represent a person with a flowing, adaptable nature.
Astrological Correspondences: Using the astrological sign, planetary influence, or birth chart of the target can provide a non-physical link. Aligning the spell with specific astrological times or planetary hours that correspond to the target can enhance the connection.

Looking for new people to follow
February 22, 2025 I am looking specifically for witches and pagans here on Tumblr who may share an interest or two with me.
Here are my interests:
Solitary eclectic witchcraft Pagan polytheism, or more precisely: I am a devotee/I work with Brigid, Hekate, Aphrodite, Loki and the folk saint Santa Muerte.
I do psychopomp work, but I don't consider myself a death witch (for instance, I do not work with graveyard dirt or bones etc and I also do not do rituals in graveyards, necromancy or this like that. No judgement if you do, it's not just not my thing.) You can read a bit more about me here: https://www.tumblr.com/cavorta/726898607274475520/re-introduction-what-am-i-doing-here EDIT - What I am NOT interested in: Astrology, Crystals and Stones, Green Witchcraft (I tried, but I am a very bad plant parent), Planetary magic, Demonolatry.
--- I am also looking for follow recs, so if you know folks who share the interests I have mentioned, feel free to point them at me in a comment.
Btw, I have unfollowed several people here who have not updated their profiles for one year or more, so I guess they won't return. But with what is happening atm with the Meta companies (Facebook, Instagram, Threads), I hope that some witchy and pagan folks have found their way to Tumblr.

May your ancestral communications be clear and healing these Dias de Los Muertos 🤍 I did some cleansing work last night using a space cleansing chime candle I make. The candle is made with beeswax, soy wax, and Sage, Patchouli, Bergamot, and Lavender essential oils. I dressed it with Lemon essential oil and the herbs I used. The intentional herbs that I chose to help cleanse and balance my space while inviting forward and honoring my ancestors include Itzayahuatl, Rosemary, Mugwort, Cinnamon, and Jasmine. I also used small chunks of pink Himalayan salt to represent the 4 directions, so my intention would flow clearly through each direction 🌊 I cleansed my spellwork plate beforehand with Agua de Florida, Copal, and Palo Santo to invite warm and loving energies. I also cleansed myself with the Copal and Palo Santo 💗

Title: Finding Balance: Spirituality & Critical Thought
Related Articles
What is Witchcraft? Bias in Witchcraft Spell Logs Dualities Content Creation Vs. Personal Practice Spell Design Spell Dictation Spellcasting Basics
Finding Balance
Finding a balance between deep sacred connection and critical thinking in our magical practice becomes an art of integration. It requires us to honor and nurture the emotional and intuitive dimensions that anchor us to the mystical, while simultaneously engaging in rigorous analysis that hones our understanding and sharpens our discernment. By nurturing this delicate equilibrium, we embark on a transformative journey that embraces both the ethereal heights of the numinous and the grounded foundations of rational exploration.
Tumblr media
Keeping What is Sacred
Magic, a subject that has captivated human curiosity for ages, extends beyond illusion and trickery. It delves into the depths of human emotion, evoking profound sensations of awe and sacredness. In the pursuit of understanding what magic truly feels like, it becomes apparent that its essence lies in the ability to establish and nurture a deep connection with one's practice. This connection goes beyond mere intellectual comprehension and encompasses a profound emotional engagement.
To grasp the true nature of magic, one must recognize the significance of feeling a sense of profoundness. This emotion arises when one encounters something that transcends the ordinary, igniting a feeling of astonishment and reverence. It is an experience that goes beyond the boundaries of rationality, encouraging us to explore the mysteries of existence. In witchcraft, this profoundness stems from the recognition of the extraordinary within the ordinary, the extraordinary concealed within the fabric of everyday life.
Feeling amazed pushes the boundaries of what we believe to be possible, expanding our horizons and inviting us to question the limits of our knowledge. Amazement manifests when we witness phenomena that defy conventional explanations, leading us to contemplate the hidden forces at play in the universe. Awe arises when faced with the vastness and grandeur of the world around us, awakening a sense of humility and interconnectedness. It reminds us of our place in the cosmic order and encourages us to contemplate the intricate web of existence. In magic, awe emerges when we encounter practices or rituals that connect us to the natural world, reminding us of the interplay between the microcosm and the macrocosm, and highlighting the profound interdependence of all things. Sacredness, the final pillar of magical experience, emanates from a deep reverence for the practice itself. It is the recognition of the inherent value and significance of the rituals, ceremonies, or acts of creation that form the core of magical engagement. The sacredness of magic lies in the belief that these practices possess transformative power, connecting us to something greater than ourselves. It is through this reverence that we infuse our practice with intention and dedication, forging a profound and enduring bond with the magical arts.
In order to fully engage with the magic that lies within our practices, it is crucial to nurture and sustain these profound emotions—profoundness, amazement, awe, and sacredness. These emotions are not fleeting, superficial experiences but rather foundations upon which the magical experience is built. They foster a deep connection with our practice, enabling us to tap into its transformative potential and embrace the mysteries that lie beyond the veil of the mundane.
Keeping what is sacred entails cherishing these profound emotions and allowing them to guide our journey through the magical realm. It requires us to approach our practice with a sense of wonder, curiosity, and reverence, ensuring that our engagement remains meaningful and enriching. By cultivating these emotions, we unlock the true essence of magic, embracing its transformative power and experiencing the extraordinary in the ordinary.
Tumblr media
Retaining a Critical Eye
Critical thinking within witchcraft embodies a multifaceted approach that engages the mind in a systematic and analytical manner. It encourages practitioners to question, evaluate, and challenge beliefs, ideas, and concepts that underpin their craft. Far from negating the mystical elements of witchcraft, critical thinking acts as a compass, guiding practitioners to distinguish between reliable information and unfounded claims. It enables them to discern between what resonates with their personal truth and what may be mere speculation or fabrication.
Understanding the significance of critical thinking in witchcraft unveils its ability to safeguard practitioners against blind adherence to dogma or misleading information. By cultivating a critical eye, practitioners can scrutinize the sources of knowledge they encounter and assess them for validity, reliability, and coherence. Critical thinking becomes a shield against misinformation and misconceptions that may permeate the realm of witchcraft, allowing practitioners to build a solid foundation of understanding based on evidence, reason, and sound judgment.
Integrating critical thinking into daily magical practices is crucial for developing a well-rounded and informed approach. One way to achieve this is by cultivating an attitude of curiosity and inquiry. Practitioners should actively seek out diverse perspectives, explore different sources of information, and remain open to new ideas and interpretations. This mindset enables practitioners to continuously expand their knowledge, challenge preconceived notions, and refine their understanding of witchcraft.
Another vital aspect of integrating critical thinking is the development of analytical skills. Practitioners can hone their ability to analyze information, evaluate arguments, and identify logical fallacies. This empowers them to critically assess rituals, spells, or claims made within the witchcraft community. By applying logic and reason, practitioners can make informed decisions, distinguishing between practices rooted in tradition and those lacking empirical support.
Moreover, embracing skepticism as a tool for inquiry is essential within the realm of critical thinking in witchcraft. Skepticism, in this context, should not be misconstrued as dismissiveness or cynicism but rather as a healthy dose of questioning and inquiry. By maintaining a healthy level of skepticism, practitioners can avoid falling prey to unsubstantiated claims or unrealistic promises. They can embrace a balanced perspective that allows room for exploration while retaining a discerning eye.
Tumblr media
Keeping the Scales Balanced
In the realm of magic, the pursuit of critical thinking can sometimes evoke concerns about the potential sterilization of the mystical arts. The fear of analytical scrutiny eroding the emotional and sacred connections inherent in magical practices is not unfounded. However, it is essential to recognize that finding equilibrium between critical thinking and magical experience is key. By exploring this delicate balance, we can foster a harmonious integration of rational thought without undermining the profound and enchanting aspects of personal spiritual encounters.
The notion of critical thinking can evoke images of sterile analysis and detached examination, which seemingly stand in contrast to the emotive and sacred dimensions of magical experience. However, it is crucial to approach critical thinking as a tool rather than a detractor. When wielded appropriately, it can complement and enhance the magical journey. Critical thinking offers the opportunity to examine beliefs, rituals, and experiences with a discerning eye, ensuring that they align with reason and evidence. It enables practitioners to navigate the vast landscape of spiritual exploration without blindly accepting unfounded claims or succumbing to cognitive biases.
To strike a balance between critical thinking and emotional or sacred connections within magic, practitioners must acknowledge the value of both. Emotional and sacred connections serve as conduits for personal experiences, imbuing them with meaning and significance. These connections enable practitioners to forge a deep and intimate relationship with their craft, allowing magic to become a source of inspiration, transformation, and empowerment. Emotional and sacred connections form the tapestry that weaves together the fabric of magical experience.
However, the integration of critical thinking need not detract from these connections. Rather, it can enrich and refine them. The key lies in embracing a nuanced approach that encompasses both rational thought and emotional engagement. Critical thinking provides a framework for evaluating personal spiritual experiences, encouraging practitioners to reflect on their own beliefs and interpretations. It allows for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms at work in spiritual encounters while preserving the awe, wonder, and mystery that make them magical.
An important concept in navigating the balance between critical thinking and magical experience is UPG (Unverified Personal Gnosis). UPG refers to personal spiritual experiences and insights that may not be universally accepted or supported by external sources. While UPG holds immense value for the individual, it is essential to rationalize and contextualize these experiences within the framework of critical thinking. This process involves reflecting on personal biases, considering alternative explanations, and examining the internal and external factors that may have influenced the experience. By undertaking this introspective and analytical exploration, practitioners can embrace the magic of their personal spiritual encounters while incorporating critical thought.

It is Natural
Within the realm of magic, the adoption of a critical approach may occasionally trigger periods of doubt. This is a natural consequence of engaging in a practice that delves into the unknown and challenges conventional beliefs. Recognizing the normalcy of doubt is paramount, as it allows practitioners to navigate their magical journey with authenticity and introspection. Moreover, understanding when to step away from magic and take a break can prove invaluable in restoring clarity and rejuvenation. Lastly, it is essential to resist the allure of mystical experiences and not neglect critical thought, as both are integral components of a well-rounded and balanced approach to magic.
Doubt, though often seen as a hindrance, is an inherent aspect of the human condition and, by extension, magical exploration. When undertaking a critical approach to magic, practitioners may question their beliefs, rituals, or experiences. This questioning should not be regarded as a sign of weakness, but rather as a testament to an inquisitive mind and a desire for deeper understanding. Doubt propels practitioners to examine their beliefs and motivations, enabling growth and self-reflection within their magical journey.
In certain instances, recognizing when to step away from magic and take a break becomes crucial. Engaging in continuous magical practice can be mentally and emotionally demanding. It is during these moments of respite that practitioners gain clarity and perspective. Stepping away from magic allows for introspection, allowing one to recalibrate and reevaluate their practices without the pressures of immediate engagement. By embracing the occasional break, practitioners can return to their magical pursuits with renewed vigor and a fresh outlook.
However, it is imperative not to succumb to the allure of mystical experiences and disregard critical thought altogether. While mystical encounters hold an undeniable fascination, practitioners must be wary of allowing these experiences to overshadow the importance of analytical thinking. By maintaining a balance between the mystical and the critical, practitioners cultivate a holistic approach that incorporates both awe-inspiring encounters and discerning analysis. This equilibrium ensures that magical experiences are grounded in rational exploration while embracing the profound mysteries that lie beyond the boundaries of everyday perception.

I'm currently writing the ritual for the Full Moon/Ides of March, that our local eclectic witch circle will be working. Instead of a traditional quarter calling, we will be calling the Winds. I'm really happy with how the calling and releasing turned out and want to share that with everyone ☺️. I think it could work in a multitude of rituals.
The calling of the winds:
Anatole, Eurus, Apeliotes, Subsolanus, Ostroni, Levante! Gods and helpful Spirits of the East Winds, both named and unnamed, we call upon you to descend, witness our rite, and hear our call for aid!
Mesembria, Notos, Auster, Sundroni, Ostro! Gods and helpful Spirits of the South Winds, both named and unnamed, we call upon you to descend, witness our rite, and hear our call for aid!
Dysis, Zephyrus, Favonius, Vuestroni, Ponente! Gods and helpful Spirits of the West Winds, both named and unnamed, we call upon you to descend, witness our rite, and hear our call for aid!
Arctos, Boreas, Aparctias, Septentrio, Nordroni, Tramontana! Gods and helpful Spirits of the North winds, both named and unnamed, we call upon you to descend, witness our rite, and hear our call for aid!
(working)
The releasing of the winds:
Gods and helpful Spirits of the Winds, both named and unnamed, you have descended and heard our grievances, our call for aid, you have witnessed our rite and know the goal for which we aim.
We charge you now to tell every plant and stone, every insect, animal, bird, and fish, every desert, plain, field, and marsh, every swamp, jungle, and forest, every mountain, canyon, and cave, every stream, river, lake, and sea!
Shout it to the Gods and Ancestors, and to every helpful Spirit!
Whisper it to the living who have open minds and hearts!
Go now, depart swiftly and gather all who shall aid and ensure our will be done!

The witchblr community sure is… something. A lot of folks hiding behind pseudonyms passing on judgement and gatekeeping without actually participating in real world witchcraft…

My Full Moon Tradition 🌝
I don't celebrate the full moon for just one day because the moon is full for up to 3. So I celebrate the "day of the full moon" as day 2 of the celebration and day 1 is the day before and day 3 is the day after.
I believe the full moon lasts 3 days and I bask in the moon for all 3. Celebrations include making moon water for both drinking and spell work, dancing in the moonlight, singing to the moon, communing with mother moon and letting her give my heart a big hug.
My relationship with my spirituality is very intimate and loving, so that seeps into all the ways I practice.
