Whew, look at how close some of those options were! Needless to say it seems like y'all want some lovely art to celebrate, so let's get to it!!!

I came up with as many options as I could provide for this poll, so I hope y'all are ready to pick out something! I'll be setting this once again for 3 days, but after the 1st day I'll be seeing what options are leading and prepare ideas and concepts for them ahead of time. (If the votes are a clear landslide I may just start working immediately!)

My AUs:

ANE: Is an animatronic reader x Sun & Moon fic that takes place post-virus! The animatronic reader is more like an OC and is a she/they. My first ever fic and one that I still plan to update. Sun is overly trusting with a saviour complex, while Moon is overly suspicious with some sort of an inferiority complex. Very slice of life-ish, with constant worries about being replaced; why can't things just settle down?

Walk In My Mystery: A sortaaa reader x Sun & Moon & Eclipse. The reader is evil and has a double life within a double life and it really is going to trail on - as of rn, they go by feminine pronouns as the Fiancee, and masculine pronouns as the Mob boss. Any relationship that eventually happens is gonna be pretty unhealthy. There's also past relationships that did happen that didn't end well, but I haven't posted those parts yet. The main focus isn't exactly getting in a relationship. They all just want the same person dead. All of them. :)

Take Me Away!: I can't specify who exactly gets shipped with the reader because it would spoil the mystery, but Sun, Moon, and Eclipse all show up here. The gender neutral reader is, let's say supernatural in origin, as they too are part of the mystery in itself. The animatronics are crashlanded in Antarctica after delivering and retrieving goods from an isolated base, now struggling to find some way of rescue while trying not to freeze up their internals.

Everything You Ever Dreamed: A gender neutral dream reader x Moon. Very Moon centric, but Sun does get some limelight, just not with the reader. Moon is tired of his mundane life and minimal time fronting, and while being programmed to put children to sleep, he feels envious of their ability to do so. He's tried and tried for a long time, but suddenly one day he actually dreams, meets the reader, has a taste of what freedom should be, and everything changes. For good and for bad.

Model/Fashion AU: A one-shot gender neutral assistant reader x Sun &/ Moon. I wish I could make more with em but I struggle with both fashion and coming up with a story with stakes for them, so they may be stuck in drabble hell, but I still adore em. Sun and Moon contest over the reader for their time and affections constantly, flirting on the daily, yet somehow none of them are dating. Sun and Moon are clearly making their intentions known, but won't jump the last leap to make it official, wanting the reader to do that so they don't feel like they pressured them into accepting their affections.

Great Comet 1812 Crossover: A simple crossover of the musical The Great Comet of 1812. Sun takes the part of Anatole and Moon takes the role of Pierre. I only drew Sun here, but I still think about these goobers whenever I listen to the songs uaghhh! (Also to those wondering who takes the role of Pierre's wife ahem sorry that's me, and even though that means he hates me and I am playing literal scum, I am married to the bias so LETS GO- /J) Many Sunhinged moments due to Anatole being so messed up :3

Subway Master Crossover: This one I parade around a lot, but it's a crossover of the Subway Masters from Pokemon Black and White, where Sun is Emmet and Moon is Ingo. I goofed around with them a lot during Halloween on my main blog, here's some of my favorite goofs of em, and of course, here's the og drawing. They still have the same pokemon team, I just like parading around Ingo's chandelure and agree with the fandom that Emmet likely breeds Joltiks.

General AUs/AUs I have not done:

These AUs aren't anything I have plans for, but they are things that interest me. Some I even already have designs for in mind! @/divinit3a had the great idea of also merging some AU ideas together, so while I'm leaving the options separate, I may try playing around with that too with the designs of these AUs mwehehe. >:3

Mer: I really want to make Sun a Cookie Cutter shark, but I'm still playing around with the ideas of the other two. It's so enticing to make Moon a squid or Octopus, but I want to explore some other fun options. Eclipse is my wild card, I'm really excited to find something elegant for him. All in all, I want to make them all separate species of mer.

Royal: Eclipse is Sun and Moon sharing a body at the same time. I want to play with the idea of technically multiple rulers, but you never know which one you're going to get. Either you get the best or worst of both worlds, the more logistical one, or the more emotional one. They can change at will too as long as the other allows it, hehe >:)

Fae: I just love Fae AUs. I don't have ideas that haven't already been written by others, but it would be fun to explore some ideas anyway. I'll be looking into different bugs and folklore to base Sun and Moon's designs off of, as well as what their best may be for the background. :3

God: I want to design and write a Eclipse God so much and I only just thought about him while coming up with these general AU ideas. I definitely need to come up with a proper design and some sort of story, but God AUs in general are so interesting and I am begging for the ones that do exist to keep going. They are beautiful life altering sustenance. I seen people make him some sort of Chaos God, but I want to make him something more akin to just Change entirely. Someone who tilts the scales to bring change no matter how good or bad it may be.

There are plenty of other AU/Crossover ideas out there! I mostly added ones I personally like the most, but I legit love so many that I am more than happy to do others! So don't be shy~ share what you'd like to see!

Drop early chapters of EYED / Dreamlike: This is a Moon-centric x reader fic I've been working on for several months now and I originally planned to start posting it when I finished it or got really close to doing so. I dropped a sneak peek of it here! I find myself currently on a standstill on it's later chapters, which is why it hasn't been finished yet, but otherwise I am reallllly happy with it's messaging and pacing. (Rn I have plotted out 15 chapters but it's looking like it could be longer with how I write oops-)

The first chapters have been pretty polished at this point, so if people are really curious about this one, I don't mind to start posting the chapters up to a certain point. If this wins, I'll post the first 3 chapters for 3 sequential days, then 4 and 5 will come out in the next week, and then the last week I'll post ch. 6 for no particular reason mhmm yup I am not planning anything nefarious-

Drawing requests: This would be my first time doing something like this, and while I know I can pop out some bangers for y'all I also don't want to dig myself into a hole and leave y'all waiting for a long time. 😅So if this wins, I'll take the first 10 requests and draw them out! Hi! So my mind has been on the upcoming lunar eclipse, and it has me wondering about how one would affect Soap and other werecreatures in your AU? It's totally okay if you don't answer, I just have a curious mind 😅

ooooh interesting question…I think a lunar eclipse would make it physically incapable for werewolves to transform into wolves. Pretty simple for normal werewolves, but for direwolves it would probably suck really bad (as a refresher, direwolf werewolves have their wolf soul as the primary soul and are much bigger. A lunar eclipse would force them to transform into their human self for the duration that the moon is covered).

Just an ideaaaaaa-

What if instead of Sun dramatically crashing the wedding or impersonating the clone(Sun Cream) he…

Attends the wedding as Eclipse’s +1 (assuming Eclipse is invited) and congratulates Moon. He THEN invites Moon to his and Eclipse’s wedding!

Moon is obviously confused and disturbed by this, so he questions what Sun meant.

Sun tells him that he really was going to give Moon a chance after Moon started being nicer post-villain arc….

BUT then Sun was stuck all alone, with Eclipse, for an hour, and he realized in that time how much he loved Eclipse!

So Moon has to both deal with the Sun he initially fell in love with being at his wedding, but also thinks he’s the reason Sun’s marrying Eclipse because he paid Eclipse to take the original-

Sun and Eclipse act all lovely dovey throughout the event, they even directly kiss when Moon first questions what’s going on and continue kissing at different points throughout the duration of the scheme. The trick is to act unfazed…

Sun isn’t actually planning on marrying Eclipse in this scenario, he’s just trying to get through Moon’s skin.

For example:

Sun: “All aloneee~ oh Moon.. me and Eclipse had so much fun~” Moon: *aggressive eye twitching* “W-What KIND of fun…?”

Eclipse: “The kind of fun you’re expecting pretty soon in your honeymoon with Cream, Moon~”

And it literally all piles up until Moon literally breaks during the ceremony and starts attacking Eclipse for being with Sun at his wedding.

When he first fell sick during an eclipse, Sun somehow knew why and wasn't overtly worried. Moon, however, was terrified because he didn't know what was happening.

The sickness only lasts for the duration of the moon's path over the sun, but it worsens at its peak before slowly fading.

Three, Two, One: Part 2 of 3

Okay! This is ANGST. As soon as I saw the initial concept suggested by @terarria-sunflower I thought it was the most beautiful, playful, wonderful thing - and honestly, who wouldn't want to give the blonde chef a wee little smooch? HOWEVER, as soon as I wrote the first part, my mind immediately went to how that would look over time.

Over the next few days, the amount of public affection above decks between the two of you were demonstrated freely and recklessly. The egg-shaped timer was becoming a trigger for the rest of the crew to groan in disapproval, secretly relishing in the fact that Sanji no longer tainted the vessel with the thick smell of tobacco infused cigarette smoke clinging stalely to every crook and crevasse; while absolutely disgusted by the amount of overzealous intimacy was engaged between you.

Things were admittedly beginning to get out of hand. Hands, specifically Sanji’s, shamelessly roaming your body; pulling down the shoulder straps of your blouses to press feverish and hungry kisses against your collarbone and neck. Hands that grasped your waist and raked slowly and deliberately over your back and down towards your ass. Hands that began to toy at the hems of your skirts and pants to bring more flesh of your hips into light and expose your stomach for him to draw his fingertips towards more of your body; all to halt at the vibration and movement of the egg-shaped timer.

Groans and whimpers of dissatisfaction would flee from his lips as his time was complete with ravishing your body with his lips and tongue. His eyes were always completely blown with lust for more, but always staying true to the conditions you laid for engaging in intimacy. He would always halt his movements, raising his hands defensively while scrunching his eyes shut tightly as you let out a playful giggle at his actions. He couldn’t get enough of you, and you felt completely the same.

Nami was the first to suggest the two of you either save it for the kitchen, or join together in one another’s cabins to save the image of the two of you working to bring Sanji’s regular hit of endorphins and adrenaline from branding its image within the minds of the full crew. This led to Sanji, instead of presenting you with the egg timer and bouncing on the balls of his feet with giddy anticipation, to clasp his fingers around your wrist as he guided you to the nearest private area to engage in osculating with his lips firmly attached to you.

As his routine was meticulously catalogued within your journal, you did not live in fear of a pounce from the blonde chef out of the regular cycle of him asking for his hit at all hours. You noticed his movements were beginning to get hungrier and more desperate for the release of endorphins; his hands and body quivering lightly in anticipation and remaining that way after the duration was complete.

On the fourth day of you engaging in this game together; you noticed his body begin to shake more feverishly, his attitude no longer carefree but eclipsed by anxiety and restlessness. That was the first time you saw him unconsciously reach for his tobacco pouch and began to roll a cigarette out of his regular routine, halting as soon as his eyes fell over your body.

As soon as he found his fingertips grazing the pouch, he rose to his feet and set to briskly stride over towards you as you faced away from him. He snaked his arms around your waist and buried his head into your shoulder from behind; you raising your arms instinctively and stiffening under the shock of the firm embrace.

“Are you okay, Sanji?” you asked him quietly, prompting him to hold you further into himself and for you to tangibly feel how anxious his body was becoming.

The Going Merry had just successfully docked against the peer of a town to resupply a variety of items, including groceries on the vast list. Upon feeling how tightly Sanji clung to you and a small whimper falling from his lips; you immediately sought out the gaze of the navigator of your group.

“Nami,” you called to her, “we’re going to hang back here for a bit. Would you mind seeing to the groceries? I’ve written down the different items, please,” your eyes became wide and panicked, “I think we need a bit of time to ourselves here.”

Nami walked her way over to you, glancing towards the hidden face of the blonde chef and then falling her eyes back to you; an outstretched hand and a similar panicked expression falling over appearance.

“Withdrawals,” you mouthed to her, no audible vocalisation fleeing from your lips to alert the carefree Straw-Hat pirates about the chef’s current predicament.

“I think I can manage to convince Luffy to keep us docked for a few more days,” Nami uttered lowly, “could see about getting a suite at an inn.”

You nodded in affirmation of the thought and gestured down to the satchel with your logbook and coin purse attached to it, reaching to unclasp it from your shoulder. You realised that Sanji’s grip was too strong on your shoulder to remove the bag from your body completely.

“Sweetheart,” you turned your face towards him, keeping your tone as low and calm as you could, “if you could relinquish your hold for just a moment?”

Sanji’s hands shakily removed themselves from your waist, but remained his forehead attached to your shoulder. You quickly removed your satchel and held it out for Nami to take from your outstretched hand.

“Expense is a non-issue for groceries or board,” you nodded to her, “if you could do your best with as much of my berry as you need, we would really appreciate it.”

“I’ll do what I can,” Nami nodded, glancing over to Sanji as his teeth began to chatter together with concern before hardening her resolve.

Sanji again laced his arms around your waist, his hands spread with his fingers clutching to your skin as if you would disappear in a gust of wind to fall your body away from him. You brought your hands to rest atop his forearms, soothing over the bare skin that began to glisten with a cold sweat.

“Sanji,” you whispered to him, prompting a small whisp of a whimper to escape from his lips in response, “honey, can you get to the ship’s bathing quarters? We need to set to regulating your temperature.”

He stifled in a gasp at the suggestion, before you felt him nod into your shoulder; his warm breath tickling at your neck.

You took him by the hands and began to lead him below the deck towards the bathing quarters. As soon as you shut the door behind you, you immediately fled to the bath and began drawing the last reserves of fresh water currently available to fill the isolated porcelain tub for the blonde chef.

Sanji leant is back against the wood of the wall, hands shaking as his eyes closed tightly shut to fight the fever overtaking him.

“Sanji, sweetheart,” you cooed at him, prompting his eyes to meet with yours immediately, “I’ve drawn you a bath. Would you like me to leave while I-.”

“I-I didn’t think it’d be-,” he gasped out, his forearms being clutched within his hands, “-I can’t-,” His words halted within his throat as he squeezed his eyes shut again and found the words forming behind his lips, “-I need help.”

“I know,” you soothed him with your voice, reaching your arms out towards him in comfort, “I’m here to help you.”

“Thank you,” he whispered, reaching his arms towards you as you began aiding him in removing his clothes to prepare himself. You unclasped the buttons on his wrists, followed by loosening his black necktie and unbuttoning his shirt down to its place on his stomach. You reached for his belt and began to unbuckle it; the metallic hilt falling away from the leather strap with ease. You halted your next step, removing yourself from his body completely and stepping away.

“Sanji, I’m going to turn around now, okay?” you informed him; “you’re going to finish getting yourself undressed and hop into the water-.”

“-Please don’t leave,” his voice hoarsely commanded you, the last syllable halted by a small desperate sob, “please don’t leave me alone.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” you informed him soothingly, continuing to hold your gaze firmly on the wall in front of you, “and as much as I want to see you undressed, I refuse to do so in your current state; completely vulnerable and suffering with this,” you narrowed your eyes at the wall, “I’ll stay with you, and once you’re in the waters and covered by the cloudy liquid I’ve made with aromatics, I’ll turn back around and help you.”

Sanji released a breathy and shaken sigh through his lips before again uttering, “thank you,” in a small hushed whisper. You heard his clothes pool at the floor, his steps harsh against the bathroom floor as he began his decent into the water with an ungraceful thud; water splashing up the sides of the rim and fall onto the floor.

“I’m going to turn back around, alright?” you declared, but remained stationary until you heard him confirm he was ready to receive your help.

“Okay,” he sighed. You turned your body around to view him. His brows were furrowed, his teeth were chattering and his head was the only visible item above the shroud of the herbal waters eclipsing him.

“Oh, sweetheart,” you sighed in response, your brows downturned as you witnessed his distress, “I’m so sorry. I never meant for it to turn out this way-.”

“-I don’t blame you,” he snapped through clenched teeth, gritting them for every syllable, “this is my fault. It shouldn’t have gotten this out of hand.”

You instinctively reached your hand out for him, halting your action to not offer unwarranted touch in his state of complete vulnerability. You sighed and turned back around, sinking to sit on the floor with your back placed up against the wall of the raised porcelain tub. You drew your knees up towards your body and placed your elbows atop them, bending your right arm back to bring your chin to your wrist as you laced your left hand into your hair.

“I-,” you began, halting your words as a small pause fell over your chest, “-I am so sorry, Sanji.” Your eyes began to pool with a small glisten of tears as empathy struck you like an arrow to the heart at your crewman’s suffering.

“I didn’t think it was going to be like this,” you uttered quickly, a hiccup gathering at the intensity of your words, “I only ever wanted to just be playful with you. Just a game, I didn’t think you’d suffer like this-.”

“-Just a game?” he sighed out in a small whisper, one you nearly missed falling from his lips. His teeth chattered as his eyes snapped open; anxiety and desperation falling from his tone as he rose his torso up out of the water.

You released your hair from within your grasp and turned in your seated position to look up at him, flittering your gaze between his eyes.

“Is that all this is?” he asked you, his voice elevating and booming over you, “is that all I am to you? Something only here to entertain you?”

Your jaw began to quiver at the thought, your eyes widening in shock and sorrow, “Sanji, I-.”

“-I’m sorry,” he cut you off, his eyes attempting to soften while remaining in his manic state, “I-I think it’s just the nicotine leaving my system. I didn’t mean to raise my voice at you. I didn’t think before-.”

“-Sanji, I love you,” you proclaimed, cutting his sentence short and rising to kneel beside the tub to bring your torso to rest flush against the porcelain, “I just want you to know that.”

You held the wall of the bathtub, feeling the warm steam rising from the hot water while the sides top frame remained cool to the touch. Sanji’s eyes widened in shock, floating his gaze between your two orbs as you brought yourself up towards him.

“I loved you from the moment I first flustered you. Your smile, Sanji,” you giggled forlornly, taking your bottom lip between your teeth before promptly releasing it, “from the first pink blush I saw rise to your cheeks, I loved you.”

His lips parted as his jaw fell slack, his eyes beginning to glaze over with the mist of emotion falling to them. He urged his body closer to yours and falling his hands to rest beside your own at the edge of the bathtub.

“Why would I want to start this little game with anyone else?” you questioned him, arching your brow playfully with a small teeter of a bittersweet giggle followed by a small sniffle. Sanji placed his right hand over your left, warm from the bath as the water began to drip and fall down your forearm.

“You were never just a game to me, Sanji,” you nodded, falling your face away to gaze down at the checkered blue and white linoleum tiled floor, “it may have started that way, but I admit that I care so deeply for you-.”

“-I love you,” he confessed, reaching his left hand towards your chin to rise your eyes back to gaze at him, “I just want you to know that.”

You looked between his eyes and triangulated back to rest on his lips before returning your gaze back upwards to him. Hearing your words echoed back to you, falling from the lips of the man you adored was the most beautiful thing you had ever heard, your heart immediately swooning at his words.

His expression was full of adoration, but remaining manic and anxious behind his eyes. His brow was littered with sweat from the heat of the bathwater, and also the release of the chemicals falling from his body.

“Let me help you overcome this, Sanji,” you whispered, “let me take care of you and once you’re well again, I’ll show you how much I truly, deeply, love you.”

A small whimper fell from his lips as he relinquished his hold on your chin with a nod, turning back to fall back within the waters and resubmerge his torso.

 “Once I get through this,” he chuckled darkly, shutting his eyes and sighing as the bath aided him in regulating his temperature, “I’m going to destroy that bloody egg-timer.”

“Oh?” you asked him with a smile, quirking your brows up in question, “and why would you do a thing like that?”

“So when I take you into my arms to completely ravish you, worship you with my body,” he looked at you through the corner of his eyes, “I get to determine exactly how long I need to feel you against me.”

The fire within your chest began to rise upwards to blood your cheeks with its warm tint, a pit beginning to form in your lower abdomen; fluttering in anticipation and pool with desire at his suggestive expression.

“For now,” he shut his eyes with a small playful smirk, “you can set the timer and count down until that moment. Give us something to both look forward to, hm?"

It's been a really long day Eclipse thinks as he shambles back into his room, barely standing on his feet. It's been a very, very long day

Luckily, he's got the entire room to himself because the family left for-

"Before you decide to flop into the nest do take a shower please"

And then he promptly jumps because Killcode's somehow fucking there.

Eclipse glares, but then stops when it finally registers to him just what state his father is in.

He's bundled in the blankets, looking miserable, holding a cup of tea and somehow managing to give the feeling of a stuffed, red nose.

"The hell happened to you?"

"It appears-" and he's cut off with a sneeze that startles him from the simple loudness of it "appears that I've caught a cold"

What the actual fuck?

"You can do that?"

The effect of the disapproving frown is lost when Killcode begins to rapidly take in air for his next sneeze, only to immediately transition into coughing.

"I'll be back in a sec"

He rushes quickly into the bathroom, because he clearly needs to take care of his father right now. Why did the rest of the family leave him alone?

He's done with his shower in record time, basically jumping into his pants so he can rush back out the door before the idiot nightmare can start doing something like cooking. Knowing him, he'd totally try to.

"Don't you even fucking dare leave the nest! Back in there!"

The startled SCP crawls back under the covers, until only his glowing red optics are visible. He looks like a kicked puppy, and not like the ancient being he is.

"I'm making you soup! Now stay there or I'm tattling on you to Sun!"

That's a proficient enough threat apparently, because his father stays in the nest for the duration of his soup making. He doesn't even dare to poke his head back out.

Might just be because he's that sick

"Here, eat this. If it doesn't feel good just tell me, you don't have to eat it all"

The sad miserable whine is only somewhat for show he thinks as large clawed hands reach for the comically small bowl, pulling it into the darkness where it disappears. After some slurping noises, the empty bowl is presented to him. He takes it with a sigh.

"Now scoot over"

"No"

"No?"

"You'll get sick..."

He sighs again, already looking towards the ceiling for patience.

"Killcode, I'm an animatronic. I can't get sick"

There's a second of quiet, then

"Oh, right"

And then the giant, sad pile of blankets is shuffling over, making him space. Eclipse takes it gladly, finally collapsing into the bed.

It's great. He's happy to be lying here. But he needs something else.

So he shimmies over until he can throw his arms and legs over the sad Killcode pile, burrowing into the warmth the SCP seems to exclude. He seems warmer than usual. Does he have a fever?

There's a bit of sad, miserable moaning, but then a large arm wraps around him, and pulls him under the blankets.

He melts into the contact, feeling his systems come alive in a happy purr he knows soothes the giant, burrowing his face into the large neck. His wraps his arms around the closest metal surface to himself and squeezes.

That familiar head nuzzles into his rays, and he's going to excuse the stressed nibbling on them as the SCP suffering because of his sickness, but he does slap at what he can now feel is a large side.

"Stop eating my rays"

The whine he gets might make someone believe he genuenly hurt him somehow, and didn't just ask him to please keep his saliva to himself. It makes him begin to pull away.

"Noooooo"

In a chidish move he didn't expect from his father he pulls him against his chest, trapping him against the hot metal. He even rolls over him, just so he can't escape.

"Get off of me!"

Killcode whines again, going limp. He only moves to pet and occasionally nuzzle him

Eclipse just sighs, settling in for a night of cuddling

do you think it would be possible for Afton to modify the virus and tweak it's acceleration somehow? Assuming the one year duration is true and no other factors slowed it. Also the virus could've mutated or something. We don't know much on the virus and how it works.

Yeah Ruin is gonna have an even worse time if what I'm expecting happens happens

Tbh. It doesn’t matter if it’s accelerated or not I think. It’s the psychological impact of it that’s going to matter with Ruin.

Ruin’s still going to have the fear of being a carrier. He’ll fear becoming truly infected. He’ll fear spreading it to his friends once they come for him: he may consider himself a danger and refuse help, especially with the thoughts he was left with (that he could’ve saved his Monty if he’d faced his fear of returning to his dimension to find his friends) that may damage his resolve/esteem/confidence the longer it takes for them to retrieve him.

He may even consider himself better off dead if it really gets to him; the whole reason he was a-okay with dying right after he completed his goal was because he had nothing else to live for, he just wanted to return to his Monty (in death) who is now not dead. And now actively rejecting and wishing Ruin pain and kidnapping him and etc etc. You have to imagine how much that hurt Ruin, and how time and fear will worsen that into something a little more permanent despite Ruin’s acting.

BUT they do kind of need Ruin to be somewhat lucid if they ever want to cure it in decent time, he literally mentions having the antivirus in his systems. If it does spread to others, Ruin is the only one with an antivirus on hand, and it’d cost Eclipse valuable time to make one from scratch. Losing Ruin here is a double blow to Eclipse’s faction in that regard—he’s also the other most capable mind present. Which is why he’s priority No.1 to Eclipse. Despite not liking him, Ruin is an important asset now more than ever.

If I am 5.2 astronomical units away from a lamp that flashes off for two hours every 40.5 hours versus 6.2 astronomical units away, presumably the intervals between the flashes of the lamp will appear to me to have the same duration in both locations, even if it takes longer for the light to reach me in the second case. Like, the relative timing of events is the same, if I'm not accelerating or decelerating away from the lamp.

So I don't understand how Rømer's calculation of the speed of light using eclipses of Io behind Jupiter is supposed to work; presumably even if the light takes longer to reach the Earth on the far side of its orbit, the interval between Io disappearing and reappearing is going to be the same? What incredibly obvious thing am I missing here?

DISCLAIMER: All are personal opinions and may be inaccuracies. I was re-watching the MW3 reboot campaign play-through today and was bugged to no end. So I'm ranting. THIS IS NOT TO SHIT ON ANYONE THAT LIKES THE NEW MAKAROV. I’m a Vladimir Makarov IP apologist in any universe. It’s all on the screenwriters.

MAKAROV’S CHARACTER & REBOOT MW3

The campaign was confirmed to be originally a MW2 DLC, and it feels like it… It’s like they have a checklist of events: bombing the airport, 141 capture Makarov, Soap’s death… and they’re just putting these events in random durations with repetitive playthroughs in between the events. Shoved together and spackled with fanservice and gut-punches with no emotional scaffolding. It’s pacing by brute force. Ticked the tragedy box, tossed the explosion, and went next.

The Two Makarovs

MAKAROV IN THE OLD TRILOGY (Mainly on MW2&3; 2009-2011)

OG Makarov was so impressionable and well-perceived that it partly contributed to the lack of screen them he had. Every time he appears, he succeeds. He rarely appears but appears when you’re distracted in attempts to stop his aftermath, and terminates the player instead. That’s what makes him terrifying; he seemed unstoppable until his demise. It’s intentionality that was put into designing each mission, and his speech that enforced charm in his character. His conviction ticks out atrocities like mere chores.

When he monologues, “All it takes is the will of a single man,” at the beginning of MW3(2011), we believe it.

OG Makarov was terrifying because he didn’t just kill—you never saw it until the world burned. He didn’t monologue to flex. He meant every word. When he narrates, it wasn’t bravado. It was proven truth by that point. The restraint in his appearance made him feel larger than life. We felt his presence in the absence of his body.

MW 2 & 3 was a psychological cat and mouse chase, not just a military one, where we’re always a few steps behind Vladimir Makarov—you weren't facing Makarov head-on; you were trailing behind him, constantly cleaning up the blood while he was already onto the next thing, honing the mysteriousness of his whereabouts and making us wary of what worse he’s capable of.

In the old Modern Warfare franchise, Makarov appeared for a total of approximately 23 minutes across the trilogy.

Suppose his scarce appearance is a double-edged sword, as you can argue the writing lacks character depth; we knew very little about Makarov’s childhood and other backgrounds until he started his military career.

However, you never had to understand him emotionally to be captivated. He wasn’t sympathetic—he was conviction made flesh. The kind of man who “kills” Yuri without blinking because “loyalty” means nothing without absolute submission and stands firmly with his cause (at least in presentation, that he didn’t act remorseful. However you can argue that he didn’t want to kill Yuri and want fate to decide his death by letting him bleed instead.). That cold clarity was his depth. The way his philosophy eclipses sentiment. He believed in the chaos he sowed. Not for attention, not for ego, but because it was necessary in his eyes.

MAKAROV IN MW3 (2023)

I low-key enjoy how Activision approached the reboot version of Makarov. His obsession with time and emphasis on following strict planning is a new take. Even though the OG and reboot share the same IP, they’re two different characters. I don’t mind Makarov killing his subordinate (Ivan) to prove a point and assert dominance by acts of bombing (to be fair, if we’re generalising both OG and Reboot’s actions can overlap to certain degrees).

Reboot Makarov wasn’t bad—it’s that he was built on gold and then left on a scaffolding. You see the core of something magnetic in him: the obsession with time, the ritualistic nature of his act, the crispness of his tone. That’s potent stuff (And thanks to Julian Kostov’s lovely acting). The writers had something. They just didn’t follow through.

They gave him the camera, but not the weight. It’s like watching a blade being waved around without ever drawing blood that means something. I defend his ruthlessness because he’s a terrorist leader, not a misunderstood poet. He should be brutal. That’s what makes his philosophy so chilling. But there’s a difference between writing a cold-blooded tactician and just using him as a dramatic prop.

Like—imagine taking a man obsessed with timing, and then throwing him into a campaign that has no rhythm. It’s ironic in the worst way.

Depth doesn’t mean redemption. It means rationale. Conviction. Internal logic.

In the MW3 reboot, Vladimir Makarov appeared for 23 to 26 minutes, which is nearly half an hour in a campaign lasting between three and a half hours.

More screen time DEMANDS depth; the longer the exposure, the easier it is to spot flaws. This is where details compensate for the presentation. You can’t spotlight a character and not build the scaffolding underneath. When you take a previously mythic figure like Makarov and put him under the lens of modern characterisation—where audiences expect layers, contractions, psychology—you have to compensate for the loss of mystiques with intentional intricacy.

But instead of nuance, we got… vague charisma and half-baked menace. They wanted us to swoon and fear him, but didn’t give us reasons to do either.

CHARISMA VS. CHARM

Charisma: something raw, innate, gravitational. OG Makarov had it in spades.

Charm: an outward performance, a weaponised allure. Reboot Makarov leans more into this—he’s more emotive, and he smiles slightly. But charm needs context to matter. Without a strong spine of motive and clever writing to reinforce it, it becomes style over substance.

The OG and Reboot encapsulate both to some degree, but it’s clear how Activision wanted to write the Reboot Makarov as this charming, dangerous warlord; they gave him more screen time, but I feel like we’ve barely seen his potential before the MW3 reboot campaign.

Collaterally, Soap’s death felt empty. It's the ultimate indictment of their pacing. If one of the core emotional pillars of Task Force 141 falls and barely lands, something’s broken. It didn’t hit because the stakes weren’t earned, and Makarov wasn’t set up as the monster behind the curtain—he was just another player on the board.
