Cool Board Games for Your Library
Genotype
Tumblr media
Age: 12+
Number of Players: 1-5
Playing Time: 45-90 minutes
Players have to try and find different parts of the genetic code in order to create high-value plants. Most genetic codes are common so it’ll be tough to pull together the genetics needed to create rarer plants. Players earn points by how many plants and what kind they are.
Why it's good for a library:
Small storage space
Educational
Versatile number of players

tbh I find the terminally online “lesbian vs bi sapphics” discourse sooooo funny after existing in irl sapphic/lesbian spaces for a few years now. Like I’ve never once had a lesbian irl care about me being bisexual (even when I’ve had a partner who is a guy). It’s such a nonissue. We all love women and have shared experiences with queerness (and lots of different ones! Which is also normal and fine) and that’s all that really matters

something messed up about the acknowledgement that even adult animals play (and it's good for them), but play is discouraged of adult humans
part of this, I think, is the idea that if you are playing, you are shirking your responsibilities. and sure, humans can fall into the bad habit of using play as escapism and at the end of the day keeping food on the table/taking care of family, etc. should take priority
but if there's a mental health aspect to play in animals, why do we ignore those benefits for humans?

For any teachers who want to fold little gift boxes, especially around recital/holiday/graduation seasons. I make these to hold stickers, chocolates, treats, pretty much any small items for students to bring home. Same goes with board game pieces instead of using plastic bags. Great way to use sheet music photocopies that would have gone to recycling anyway.

For sheet music: Ko-fi (classicalsqueak) or SMP* (published by Ylan Chu)

I wish I could handle myself in an argument without fucking crying
#My dad just got back from a like. educator’s conference on ai#and was like ‘wow it’s just so amazing. I wish students didn’t use it to cheat but it’s amazing’#and he’s talking about how he would be fine to see art and writing and stuff created by ai if he couldn’t tell the different. and was like.#if you can’t tell why would you care? to me#and I was like ??? Because I want to see things created by my fellow man? because I want to see things created by passion and love#for the craft? because I want the stories I consume to benefit talented creators and not just big corporations?#Because I want people to being able to share their art with the world instead of it all being created by a computer trained on#nonconsenting parties??#and he was like ‘yknow you really shouldn’t position yourself so anti ai. you’re never gonna be able to get a job with that attitude’#and I’m just like ‘I don’t want a job that uses ai as it currently stands? and unless this shit improves drastically I probably won’t?’#and he was like ‘well you’re gonna fuck yourself’ and then went into this long metaphor and then said that this was just like how#I hate board games and that I shouldn’t commit so hard to my dislike of something bc I’ll be missing out#when that’s not even the fucking same thing! I wish I liked board games! I wish I could share in something that literally all of my friends#love and not be a fucking bummer at parties bc I either don’t play and look weird or I do play and feel like shit and probably act like#an ass! I wish I liked board games! I simply do not enjoy playing them! I find them stressful and unenjoyable!#I don’t like ai bc I don’t like the way it’s trained! I don’t like the way companies are trying to use it! I don’t want to make or consume#things that were created by an algorithm when I have beautiful art and writing and creations by passionate people who I think should be pai#and at this point I start crying bc he’s telling me I’m never gonna get a job bc god forbid I have some principles and keeps comparing it t#the board game thing which he already knows I’m fucking sensitive about!#and I have to run upstairs like a pussy bc I don’t wanna keep talking about it bc now I’m fucking crying#I hate how I can’t get even a little bit passionate without just getting emotional. I hate that I can’t handle myself#it sucks bc now I’m sure I just look like an idiot and my evening is ruined

Why Board Games?
Games should always have a place in class. When students are having fun and feeling good, their affective filters lower, and they become more receptive to learning. However, not all games are created equally. There has been lots of research and handwringing over screen time, and I think educators are responsible for providing alternatives if possible. Board games offer entertaining…

Quations (Apple II, Andrew P. Mandell, Bernie Dodge & Steven Buss/Edaptive Software, 1985)
Like Scrabble but with math - and impressively comprehensive. Minus as negative sign! Order of operations (PEDMAS, according to my tests)! Expressions that equal fractions (e.g. you can do 1/3=2/6)! Play it in your browser here.
Tip - press Enter on the title screen, then wait. Quato is an AI opponent. Press H during gameplay for important instructions. An equation can have multiple equals signs (e.g. 1+3=2*2=8/4). Equations can be extended in this way and others (e.g. 7=7 -> 77=77). And yes, an expression can consist of a single number.
To end a game without using all tiles (which is basically inevitable), all players must trade tiles or skip turns in a row, ending with a skip.
Don't choose 'See a Sample Game' - it requires disk-swapping, which is unsupported - unless you use the Side A and Side B disk images (ignore the work disk) in this alternate in-browser emulator which does support disk-swapping.

Why Wooden Toy Puzzles Are the Timeless Choice for Smart Play
When it comes to playtime, the choices can be overwhelming. Yet, one category stands out as a timeless classic: wooden toy puzzles. These enchanting toys have captivated children for generations, blending fun with education in a way that few other toys can match. Imagine your little ones piecing together vibrant shapes and figures while developing critical skills like problem-solving and hand-eye coordination. Wooden toy puzzles are not just about entertainment; they offer countless benefits that go beyond mere amusement. They spark creativity and ignite curiosity, making them an essential addition to any child's playroom. Join us as we explore why wooden toy puzzles deserve a cherished spot in your home!
The Benefits of Playing with Wooden Toy Puzzles
Playing with wooden toy puzzles provides a rich sensory experience. The tactile nature of wood is comforting for little hands, encouraging exploration and engagement. These puzzles promote cognitive development too. As children manipulate pieces to fit into their rightful places, they enhance spatial awareness and critical thinking skills. Moreover, wooden toys offer durability that plastic counterparts often lack. They withstand rough play while maintaining their beautiful designs over time. This resilience means kids can enjoy them for years, fostering long-term learning experiences. Social interaction also plays a role in puzzle playtime. Children often gather around to solve puzzles together, enhancing cooperation and communication skills as they share strategies and celebrate successes. The vibrant colors and shapes stimulate imagination—inviting kids on adventures through stories only they can create!
Maintenance and Care for Wooden Toy Puzzles
Wooden toy puzzles are not just durable; they can last for generations with the right care. Regular maintenance ensures their beauty and functionality remain intact. Start by cleaning your wooden puzzles regularly. A damp cloth works wonders to remove dust and dirt. Avoid soaking them in water, as excessive moisture can warp the wood. Inspect pieces frequently for any signs of wear or damage. Should you notice rough edges or splinters, sand them gently with fine-grit sandpaper to keep playtime safe. Store these treasures away from direct sunlight and humidity to prevent fading and warping. A dedicated storage box is ideal, keeping everything organized and protected. Using natural oils occasionally can enhance the wood’s luster while providing a protective layer against scratches. These simple steps will ensure that your wooden toys puzzles remain a beloved part of childhood memories for years to come.
The Environmental Impact of Wooden Toys
When considering toys for children, the environmental impact is an important factor. Wooden toy puzzles stand out as a sustainable choice in today’s eco-conscious world. Unlike plastic alternatives, which often end up in landfills and contribute to pollution, wooden toys are biodegradable. They can decompose naturally without causing harm to the environment. Moreover, many companies that produce wooden toys prioritize sustainable sourcing practices. This means the wood used comes from responsibly managed forests or recycled materials. Choosing these products supports ethical manufacturing processes and promotes sustainability within the toy industry. Investing in wooden toy puzzles not only benefits children's development but also reflects a commitment to protecting our planet for future generations. By opting for these timeless classics, parents can foster learning while also making conscientious choices about their consumption habits. Wooden toys puzzles truly embody smart play—where joy meets responsibility—and they will likely continue to be cherished by children and adults alike for years to come.
