author’s note: this is a short excerpt (maybe the first chapter?) of a story i’ve been thinking about for the past few weeks. this is just to establish the vibe of something that will probably turn into a series. i hope you enjoy a little melancholy.

“Joel.”

Tommy’s voice resonated in his brother’s ears. The eldest Miller was lost in his thoughts for what seemed like the 5th time in the past half-hour that they’ve been in the Tipsy Bison. He only responded by blankly looking up from his spot around the table.

“You alright, big brother? Wanna share what’s on your mind?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. It’s just,” Joel paused, hesitating whether or not he should be sharing his doubts. I mean, what a fucking coincidence would that be.

“I was walking around town today and... Jesus, I’m gonna sound like I’m going insane, which I probably am, but,” he let out another breath “I saw this person, this woman, standing in front of the barn and... it looked a lot like someone I knew back then. Before the outbreak, I mean.”

“Shit, didn’t think your memory was that good, old man.” Tommy joked, taking another sip of his pint.

That was the problem. His life 20 years ago and the one he was currently living felt like two different realities, he could have been mixing up his recollections. He wasn’t even sure he remembered her all that well, despite everything they’ve been through in a relatively short amount of time.

What he did know is that she was the type of person a kid would look up to: kind, passionate, crafty, incredibly smart and with a strange sense of humour. And while she was mature, she was also naïve, and indecisive, and petty, and emotional at times. But he remembered ardent feelings, feelings she displayed openly, without fear. The same couldn’t be said about him.

“Yeah, looks like all those hits to the head are finally taking effect.” he mumbled into his own drink, earning a chuckle from his brother.

“Listen, as long as you’re making sense, I ain’t complaining.”

The two sat around for another hour, chatting to a few people that stopped by their table for a quick hello. Tommy was mostly doing the conversing as Joel still found it a bit hard to adjust to a life in a functioning community. While the former was busy talking about supplies for the new playground with Dennis (Danny? Dean?), Joel felt like he needed another pint and headed to the bar.

It was Friday night, which meant the Tipsy Bison was busier than usual, with everyone celebrating the end of the week. It took a lot of convincing from Tommy to get his older brother to go out for drinks. He rarely ever agreed, usually preferring to stick to the bottle of whiskey he was gifted when him and Ellie first arrived. Nevertheless, Joel felt like he was finally starting to recognise some of the faces around town, which for him was a small accomplishment.

Making it to the bar, he patiently waited for one of what appeared to be three bartenders to serve him. The conversations all around him were all blending together as a soft rock tune played in the background for more ambiance. But it didn’t stop him from singling out a particular voice, a laugh, among dozens. It sounded more mature than the one etched into the far back of his mind.

He looked up from his spot at the far end of the counter, searching for the source of the anxiety growing in his chest. It’s been twenty years. It cannot be her. You are working yourself up for nothing.

And yet he strained his neck to get a better view, and there she was. Her appearance had changed slightly, she looked more rugged, more...experienced. But it was her, or at least the older version of her. You’re losing your damn mind, Joel, snap out of it.

As if she were reading his thoughts, the woman turned her head and the two made eye contact. Her smile wasn’t the only thing that had dropped as the glass she was originally drying found itself in pieces on the ground. 

Joel’s ears began to ring and he found himself backing away from the counter, bumping into a few displeased townsfolk as his feet clumsily carried him out of the pub. He didn’t even realise how suffocated he felt inside until he took a big breath of the fresh evening air, leaning against a utility pole for support, not trusting his knees to hold him up. His thoughts were racing a million miles an hour, his heart was just about 10 pumps away from officially stopping.

“Mr. Miller?”

Her voice, faint and quavery, came from behind him. It ain’t her, you are seeing ghosts. Go home. It took everything in him not to run away, to get hold of himself and his emotions as the world felt like it was crumbling down on him. Finally, after what felt like hours, he braced himself and hesitantly turned around to face his past.

It was just the two of them stood outside in the dimly-lit streets of Jackson. The only sound that filled the heavy silence were the muffled noises coming from the wooden walls of the Bison. Her eyes, those pleading eyes, glistened ever so slightly with tears.

“Joel.”

Because, I feel like bluey would kinda be like Ellie in the last of us. Ridiculously crafty and a very good shot.

OH MY GOD!!! So happy someone asks about my au I have so much unexplored lore I’d love to go into.

I think most of blueys neighbours are friends are living- I don’t have the heart to kill them off. However most of them have also escaped to different parts of the country on day 0, meaning that as they journey towards Geraldton, it’s more than likely they encounter them. Lucky’s family was with them when they received the initial state mandated warning- meaning they cross paths the most. Jean-Luc is there too! His family was on holiday and he was separated from them on day 0. Bandit finds him while taking refuge in the hospital and agree to take him along with them to find his parents.

And yea totally Bluey’s creativity is a HUGE buff in her favour. Her dad isn’t in the soundest state of mind so her energy makes up for his lack of it.She’s often the one setting up traps around camp and using their surroundings to her advantage! I don’t think Bandit would let her handle any sort of weapon if he can help it, not at first. She really earns his trust though, being both tough and clever.

You clench your fists, empty now though they shouldn’t be. 

You weren’t expecting a betrayal like this. 

That thing is crafty, you knew this wouldn’t be easy, but for him to try to strike you down like this. To impose such rules on you as to make you helpless against something so big. 

Oh, you’ll hurt him for this. 

He thinks that just because this is his soul he can make all the rules? Ha. You’ve been doing this for longer than him. 

You clench your teeth into a bitter smile as you stand up, brushing soot off of your dress. 

None of this damage is permanent. Grace courses through the two of you like ichor, and he will reform himself exactly as he was. Frozen in time from the moment he ascended from abomination to shield. 

You rinse your hands in the same creek that killed him, letting the soot of his memories run off  like swirling ink.

Reverse Treasure Hunter AU

This is an au where the survivors are a small group that steal artifacts from museums and return them to their country of origin.

They still get into big fights with greedy white men who have no regard for other people, they just recognize that if artifacts should go to a museum, it shouldn't automatically be a British or American one. Because they mostly steal from those.

They also deal with cursed artifacts a lot, so those ones don't go to a museum or country. They get destroyed or disposed off.

The western world call then morally grey at best, but the countries who get their artifacts back hail them as heroes.

They call themselves: Velum Temporis (Vay-loom temp-poar-is), latin for 'the veil of time'.

All survivors go out into the field and do some heavy lifting. But a team doesn't work if they all do the same thing, so here are their induvial skills.

Coach: He is the leader of this group, He make sure everyone that everyone is doing their job and that the operation is running smoothly. He also makes sure people are taking care of themselves and that victories are celebrated with lots of food.

Rochelle: She studies the artifacts they are extracting. After all, not everything the group goes after is a random vase. She makes sure that the client is who they say they are, the artifact is what they say it is and if it's dangerous: how to destroy or contain it.

Nick: He is the groups spy and mole for when they need to infiltrate something more high tech then a museum. He uses his charisma and general con artist tactics to navigate his way to his goal. He likes getting to the artifact more then actually getting it, complaining that: "History is always so god-damn filthy." He's also good at cracking safes.

Ellis: He is the handyman of the group, and backup if someone gets put out of commission. He has knowledge on how to do the basis of each job and is a jack of all trades, except for research. He is too trusting to conduct a proper background check and knows it.

Bill: Bill is mostly there so these kids don't get themselves thrown in jail or shot. He teaches everyone hand to hand combat and how to fire a gun. He also volunteers to be the distraction a lot, using his old man status to talk with the staff for long periods of time, yell at guards for no discernible reason and pretends to have heart attacks.

Francis: Francis is muscle first and foremost, He also has connections with a lot of people that are willing to work with criminals. And are more trustworthy then Nicks connections. He is willing to put himself on the line to help his team.

Louis: He his a hacker and gadget maker. His creations and ability to break pass every security system put in front of him as made him the best hacker in the country. His work, when combined with Rochelle's, is the backbone of the whole operation.

Zoey: She is the one who does most of the actual stealing, she is given the info and gadgets that she needs and is sent in. She is flexible, crafty and great at improvising. For example, if she's caught outside of her target's building, she pretends to be drunk, works every time.

For your sleepover -- pls tell me your headcanons for Peter and Sunshine celebrating various holidays together. Are they traditionalists? Do they celebrate Hanukkah? Do they bake together?

Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year's):

They go over to May's house for dinner. They eat apples dipped in honey. May makes her famous homemade Challah bread and Sunshine brings a dessert of some kind. She makes an amazing spiced honey cake! They spend time with May and play some board games with her.

Yom Kippur:

Yom Kippur always happens 10 days after Rosh Hashanah and it's the holiest Jewish holiday. So it's one of the few times Peter and Sunshine go to a synagogue for service. They don't always fast (which is what you traditionally do), but do reflect on the past year and ways they want to be better for themselves and each other.

Peter hadn't gone to service since Gwen died. So he was quite nervous the first time he went. Sunshine kept assuring him that he didn't have to go with her, but he wanted to, he wanted to spend it with her. She held his hand the whole time, squeezing it so he knew she was there for him.

Halloween:

Sunshine goes all out for Halloween. She has several tubs of Halloween decorations she gets out. Peter compromised and said she could start putting them out after Labor Day. Their little apartment door is all decked out. They like to do costumes that are easy, so one year they were the couple from BeetleJuice, another year they were Ellie Sadler and Alan Grant from Jurassic Park. Sunshine brought a cheap knockoff Spiderman costume for her and Peter one year as a joke. Peter likes her costume better as it's more revealing.

Thanksgiving:

They go to Sunshine's family for Thanksgiving! I can see Sunshine coming from a very sweet and big family. So for Peter, it's overwhelming his first time. It's a lot of people. Sunshine finds him in the guest bedroom and they sit and talk for a bit. Then one of Sunshine's nephews comes in and asks if Peter can play with them. Peter says yes and spends hours playing with them outside, tossing them into the pile of leaves. Sunshine's heart absolutely melts when she sees Peter playing with her nieces and nephews! She is on him the whole time afterwards girl has a breeding kink

Hannukah:

They have a little menorah in their house that they light! They spend one night at May's house, which is where they make latkaes (her kitchen is bigger). I can see Sunshine making some banging kugel. Another night is spent with friends, another night is spent with Sunshine's Aunt who lives in the city. They give each other little gifts here and there and on the eighth night, give each other their main present. Sunshine is really good at gift giving. I can also see Peter being really crafty (he did make his own Spidey suit!) And making her sunflower and Sun pattern stuff. I can see Peter getting into knitting and making her scarves so she can stay warm in the winter when outside for recess!

Christmas:

They get Chinese food and watch movies in their pajamas (as is the traditional way when you're Jewish lol). Sunshine bakes sugar cookies and Peter eats more of the dough than actually helps. It usually ends with them cuddling on their couch, watching Home Alone reruns.

New Year's:

Sunshine drags Peter to a New Year's party. Always. I wouldn't say she's a huge extrovert, but she likes to celebrate with folks! Their first year, Peter was unsure whether to kiss her or not, so Sunshine took the lead and planted one right on his face. Now he doesn't hesitate lol.

Valentine's Day:

Valentine's day is when they dress up and go to a fancy restaurant. It's a miracle if Peter is able to keep his hands off of her before they get to the restaurant. They both buy each other flowers. Peter gets Sunshine sunflowers and marigolds, Sunshine gets Peter a mix of Malvas and Magnolias.

For their first Valentine's Day as a couple, poor Peter was so nervous. He tried cooking dinner for her and Sunshine had to step in. They ended up ordering Thai food and ate it on their balcony. Sunshine still swears it's the best Valentine's Day she's ever had.

Passover:

They got to May's for dinner. Peter has been leading the seder since Ben died. It's something he accepted long ago. But then Sunshine comes in and she's so proud of Peter and for the first time, instead of just reciting the story of Passover, he's actually lively and even sneaking in some jokes. May almost cries because it's almost like Peter is back to his old self, his self before death and lost love marred him.

Fourth of July:

They go to a friend's cookout. I truly believe Peter has a tank top of one of the founding fathers drinking a beer. Sunshine wears red lipstick which Peter absolutely loves and makes it known. Peter takes her to the top of the Empire State building because it has the best view of the fireworks.

Who is your style icon?

My style icon is a mix of two people. Tracee Ellis Ross, I love her use of fun colors and bold patterns and Audrey Hepburn. I love her use of tailoring and shapeliness of her outfits. The combination of these two is my dream fashion icon.

Who is the most prolific in the Bridgerton group chat?

I think the person who is really good at getting people together and do social stuff is Bessie Carter who plays Prudence Featherington.

Which other celebrity would you trust to give you a tattoo?

It’s got to be someone that’s good at art because i want a cool tattoo. I’m trying to think! I know Simone’s really good at drawing. So I’d think she’d be able to give a cool tattoo and she does have a tattoo gun and she does know a lot about tattoos. Shelley Conn, who plays my mom on Bridgerton, is very crafty. She does a lot of DIY stuff but I don’t know if that translates to tattoos. So either Simone or Shelley. There’s so much pressure to get a tattoo that’s really meaningful that you won’t regret and I have such an inertia because I put so much pressure on it. So I think probably I’d get something really silly and meaningless. Maybe like a pug. I don’t know.

Where were you when you found out you'd got the role of Edwina Sharma in Bridgerton?

It’s actually a really good story. I was helping my mum on her allotment. So we were making a polytunnel with PVC tubing and I was measuring and cutting. I get a call from my agent telling me that I’m gonna be in glamorous gowns for the next six months so real juxtaposition there. The skill and the effort that go into making each of these gowns, I mean they’re couture gowns. So i had a lot of respect for the art that was created with the costumes.

How excited were you about joining the show?

I think the experience of new cast members is very different from the season 1 cast because, you know, when they were filming season 1 and when they were casting season 1, they, i don’t think they had any idea of what it was gonna be.

That is was gonna big as big of a phenomenon as it is. But joining season 2 and joining season 3, you know, we know how important it is to people.

What’s your beauty secret?

I have two actually. I’m feeling very generous today. The first thing is and I got from a lovely person that I met at British Fashion Counsel. The best “eyebrow gel” to get feathered laminated brow look is to use latex-free eyelash glue because I have very horizontal brows. So if you brush them up with latex-free eyelash glue, they stay and you get that laminated look without having to actually laminate them. The other tip is and I got this from a Youtube video that Sir John, Beyonce’s makeup artist, did where he said he uses eye cream as lip balm because it won’t add that glossy texture that Vaseline or gel might have. So it’s a matte moisturiser essentially.

What are three things you can’t live without?

I’m very practical- My phone. A phone charger. Electricity. But if I’m thinking non-practical: chocolate, tequila and tabasco. I love food so– yeah. All food related.

What style advice do you live by?

The best style advice I can give is: don’t focus on trends. Find out what you enjoy, what works for you regardless whether you see it on a magazine. Just be true to yourself. And don’t be afraid to experiment.

Truly, my go to look is jeans and a nice top. It’s just so effortless and classic and you don’t have to think about it too much. Right now, I’m loving the Levi’s Wide Straights, they are so flattering and easy to wear. And I love having a colorful, printed top on with some fun colorful boots. And that’s kind of my go to look everyday.

What’s your dream date?

April 25th, it’s not too hot, it’s not to cold. That’s from one of my favourite movies; Miss Congeniality!  

I think the first few dates I would prefer a drink, where you can look someone in the eye and get to know them and talk to them. But generally I love activity dates, maybe bowling or going for a hike. To be able to share an experience with someone is really fun.

What book do you recommend to everyone?

Essays in love by Alain de Botton. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. It’s devastating, but for me it’s about the exploration of what it means to be human. All About Love by Bell Hooks, I think, for young women, it’s a really important book to read.

Is there a TV show you wish you were in?

Succession. I say this in every interview like genuinely,I would love to be in Succession. My housemate and I are rewatching it right now in preparation for season 4 because it cannot come soon enough. I’m team Kendall, but my favourite interactions are cousin Greg and Tom Wambsgans. I think I’m probably a bit like Shiv or would be like a Shiv in terms of the character I would play.

What’s you go-to comfort meal?

God, I have so many! But my favourite meal is something called kothu parotta and it’s a very classic Tamil dish. It is just the perfect combination of salt, fat, acid, heat. And it’s just, urgh, the umami! It’s so good. But if I think about easy quick comfort meal, it’d just be a bowl of pasta with pesto.

How open are you about your life on social media?

Before the show I think I was really open about the ups and the downs. And I think that when you have a lot of people watching you, you do feel the scrutiny a bit more, and I have noticed holding myself back a lot and I think that’s something that I need to change. I want to go back to feeling like myself, but it’s a process of figuring that out.

What makes you happiest?

I’m on the journey of figuring that out. I think there’s a lot of pressure for us to have the answers to these complicated philosophical questions but I feel like the purpose of life is the journey and the experience of these things. I don’t think we are supposed to find the answers to these questions. But, things that make me happy? Food, watching a good film, hanging out with my family and friends.

What are you most excited for right about?

I just wrapped up filming on a movie which will came out next year- I cannot say when. And I’m developing a limited series at the moment, and there are a couple of things I cannot mention! I hate to be that person! But what I’m really excited about, in terms of the industry, is that there really is a push to have diversity in front of the camera and behind the camera, which is equally as important. Like, the projects that you hear circulating, whether I’m involved in them or not, are so cool and are gonna be so important for future generations in terms of representation and it’s incredibly exciting.

3. weapon of choice? any particular reason they chose their weapon?

Seph's weapon of choice is knives :D including daggers and throwing knives! His first weapon ever was a sword (because David required all his recruits to use swords) but later on Maffi introduced him to knives and he liked it way more. Since he was never super physically strong his fighting style was more based on agility & speed (or stealth if he could), so a small weapon that's easy to conceal was perfect for him!

As for Ellie, she started out with a sword as well and used it for a while. But overtime they started using it less and less, until they abandoned it altogether. Later on she starts using whatever she can find or just good old fists, before settling on a bo staff :D Mostly to signify her evolution/maturity and her finally getting rid of her "protagonist syndrome".

4. how crafty/resourceful are they?

Seph is very resourceful. He was on his own since he was quite young and for a long time he was living in poverty (ranging from extreme to managable). One of his major character traits is that he saves money/resources a lot... Sometimes too much, even when he doesn't have to, to the point where it affects his physical hygene. Overall I wouldn't call him a survivalist, but he can take care of himself just fine, even in dangerous situations or times where he has no roof over his head.

If Seph is resourceful, I'd say Ellie is more crafty xd. She's way worse at managing resources and has less "street-smarts" in surviving on her own. I would say they're very inventive and creative though. Besides, they were a fandom kid, definitely made cosplays and stuff like that, so that's got to count for something.

In short Seph is more practical and Ellie more crafty :3 But I do think they would both enjoy DIYs, Seph cuz he can save money and Ellie cuz its fun and she likes making stuff ^-^

                         section 31 were crafty.  they had spies everywhere.  they wanted her.  and ellie didn’t exactly know why but what she did know is that it wasn’t for anything good.  she had noticed the tail on her the minute she had stepped onto the promenade.  he wasn’t very good at his job.  she could see him as clear as day.  the thought that not even a very public space would stop them from trying  ,  caused her stomach to churn.  her feet had carried her to the one place that she felt safest.  hutz’ cart.  seeing the tall nausicaan  ,  had her body instantly relaxing  -  but that’s where he got her unfortunately.

                         a hand had encircled her elbow and tugged her to a stop. “  no !  ”  she exclaimed trying desperately to pull her arm from his grip.  “  get off me !  ”  brows are furrowed low over her brows as her body turns towards the agent.  it was annoying that the sudden thought of if he wasn’t trying to kidnap me  ,  i would think he’s kinda cute crossed her mind with no shame.  it wasn’t until she noticed the hypospray in his hand  ,  he was far to obvious and ellie was worried that no one was going to do anything.  but her knight in shining armour came to her rescue when she feels the prescience of her friend behind her.  his voice is a deep growl and the grip he had on the agents wrist was strong.

                         the agent grunted  ,  struggling to keep the grip he had on ellie’s elbow.  eventually she was released and she couldn’t help the smug look that crossed her face.  before she quickly fell behind hutz’ body  ,  as she tried her best to keep out of sight.  hutz keeps the man’s wrist in his grip for a couple of more seconds  ,  before he pushed him away.  the agent huffed  ,  fixed his uniform and turned on his heel  -  ignoring the stares of the people still lingering near by.  “  thanks.  ”  ellie mumbled as she looked up at the giant.  a soft smile tugged at the corner of her lips  ,  as her hand rubs at her elbow.  “  they really have no shame.  ”

I just realized half my house is nice and clean and the other 50% hasn't been touched yet and today's the day I break the half way mark. Today I'm doing (dish and laundry always) my bedroom and and hopefully the living room so that I can vacuum and walk around barefoot again for the first time in a really long time.

I've got to plan around Lola's school time. Ellie will also be home today because she has a fever. I'll be making soup and all the hot tea she's willing to drink today. Lola was sick for maybe 36 hours so ideally it will pass quickly for Ellie too. I've been making them lots of herbal salt baths.

I'm hoping our check cleared the bank because I really need to order groceries. I'm sad all the summer fruit is gone. I'm not loving what I saw at the store yesterday. I need to research the seasonal foods in my region so I can find something to be happy with. However roasting pumpkin seeds after we carve our pumpkin will be great I just hope I don't mess them up this year.

My kitchen is finally fucking spotless! Well aside from some dishes but I'm going to do those soon. And now with access to my art supplies and kitchen space to crafty things I've got a whole list of stuff I want to make now. Candles, soap, Christmas decorations...And I won't even start on all the cooking and baking projects I'm planning to do. So yea I'm going to make a fall/winter bucket list because this year I can actually do the things I set out to do without drugs fogging my brain and ruining everything 🙃

My body is getting tired of doing stuff all day but my brain is loving the energy from all the clear space and getting rid of things. My recycling is not going to shut its so full of old school work books and coloring books. It's weird to get rid of stuff from when the kids were tiny but it's time to keep moving in life and make space for their current interests.

Knuckles Show Review – A Low-Stakes Climb

The live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie series that started in 2020 has delivered entertaining adventures starring everybody’s favorite Blue Blur and his ever-growing stable of friends. One of the highlights of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba. The fish-out-of-water gags and his strict adherence to the echidna warrior code, which is in stark contrast to Sonic’s fun-loving personality, made for an enjoyable dynamic within the cast of characters. Knuckles, the new six-episode streaming show on Paramount Plus, tries to carry forward that dynamic. However, thanks to low stakes, a palpable disconnect from the larger Sonic story, and too much emphasis on the human characters in the world, it falls short of the heights reached by the two theatrical films.

Warning: While I try to remain as spoiler-free as possible, some aspects of the narrative and characters are mentioned throughout this article.

This spin-off series follows Knuckles as he trains Wade Whipple (Adam Pally), the goofy police officer from the first two Sonic films, in the way of the echidna warrior. Though Wade is fine as comic relief in the films, I often struggled with placing so many of the emotional stakes at the feet of this character. This becomes particularly true once his family joins the show. The weakest parts of the Sonic movies are the scenes featuring the human characters. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 appeared to learn that lesson, as it sent many of the main humans away on a trip, but the inverse is true in Knuckles; on multiple occasions, I wondered why we were focusing so much on the family drama of Wade instead of what Knuckles was up to off-screen.

The family storyline that consumes much of the latter portions of the show can be compelling in bursts, but it almost feels like an entirely different show altogether. The show does very little to inform viewers why we should care about these characters aside from the fact that they’re related to Wade. The mother character (Stockard Channing) is the most likable of the bunch, particularly when the other major players feel like cartoonish caricatures of sitcom archetypes – even more so than in the movies. Thankfully, when the titular character is on screen, it’s another strong performance by Elba. I’m also happy that much of the CGI of the Knuckles character looks great, particularly when in fights.

The action sequences of Knuckles are the highlight. One scene, in particular, takes place in a kitchen and benefits from crafty camera work and a simulated single-take effect. The action scenes are well-paced throughout the six-episode season, but they do shine a light on one of the most significant shortcomings the Sonic franchise must overcome if it hopes to expand out in spin-off series such as this: Sonic’s gallery of enemies just isn’t that deep. Having the main antagonists of Knuckles be two rogue agents of GUN and a guy who used to work for Dr. Robotnik demonstrates this in irreconcilable ways. Sure, we’re promised Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and we could still get the introduction of characters like Metal Sonic or Chaos in future media, but this series shows that the pool is pretty shallow.

Installing low-profile villains for the franchise’s first streaming series could be forgiven if they made their mark, but they feel like retreads of what Dr. Robotnik was trying to accomplish in the first movie; their entire motivation is to capture Knuckles to steal his power. Ellie Taylor and Kid Cudi deliver fine performances as the rogue GUN agents, but the characters rarely serve as anything more than plot devices for the characters to progress on their personal journeys and foils in fight scenes. We do learn of their motivation later in the show, but at that point, I only cared about them because when they showed up, it usually meant an action scene was coming.

When you aren’t watching a fight sequence play out, you’re usually enduring a joke shotgun blast with a relatively low hit rate. The seasoned comedic delivery of actors like Adam Pally, Paul Scheer, and Cary Elwes do wonders for some of the jokes on offer in Knuckles, but it’s often not enough to keep the momentum up and running. Instead, in the times when Knuckles wasn’t on screen, I was more enthralled by the heartfelt moments, which, much like the humor, have a relatively low success ratio. Much of the family dynamics are framed around an absurd bowling tournament that apes the vibe and storyline of Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story a little too closely, making it difficult to connect to the characters or the overarching narrative. Knuckles feels noncommittal when it comes to the tone it’s going for. While it’s not impossible to be an action-comedy series with sentimental moments, it’s a trickier line to walk than Knuckles can accomplish.

And it would all be forgiven if the story felt essential – or even consequential – to the world of the Sonic series. But instead, having not yet seen Sonic the Hedgehog 3, I can’t help but feel that Knuckles has that sitcom quality where everything ends up right where it started. Sure, there’s a journey with some sentimentality, minor character development, funny gags, small Easter eggs, and enjoyable action scenes, but if someone asked if they needed to watch Knuckles before going to see Sonic the Hedgehog 3 when it arrives in theaters this December, I’d be hard pressed to find a narrative reason to answer them in the affirmative.

That’s perhaps Knuckles‘ biggest flaw: Despite its sometimes fun and heartfelt moments, it feels entirely inessential. Video game adaptations have an outdated reputation for being bad. Knuckles isn’t outright bad, but when compared to its contemporaries like Fallout, The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and even Sonic the Hedgehog 2, it feels like a video game adaptation from a bygone era.

as a child, jamie believed in “safeguards” or “protection spells”, the knowledge of which he passed on to ellie. this would typically entail taking a small object of any significance and venturing out into the woods to bury it. he believed that burying an object would provide them with good luck and protect them from any danger, but after ellie’s initial disappearance, he lost faith in the practice. ellie continues to practice these spells even after jamie leaves home.

jamie is very firmly straight edge, meaning he doesn't smoke, drink, or consume any substances. however, he finds the smell of tobacco really comforting, partly due to his uncle jack's constant chainsmoking habit. jamie will often accompany people while they are smoking, for this reason.

while they never officially celebrated any holidays or birthdays in the ainsworth household, jamie would still get presents for ellie and jack every birthday and sometimes on christmas. he'd either save up for months to buy something nice, steal something, or make something by hand. he's quite crafty, so gifts were often handmade cards or origami animals. one year, he stole a book on trees for ellie, and it's long been her favourite ever since.

continuing my thoughts about Joel in the RE universe, i agree for the most part!! I think Joel's advantage is that he is hella crafty and good at solving puzzles which would make it easy for him to navigate the police department and unlock weapons along the way. He also possesses the ability to make something out of nothing. Leon can craft bullets and healing things, but Joel can make bombs, durable melee weapons, and shivs with ease. However, while I think Joel likely has the skills to escape raccoon city... he is very selfish (unlike leon or claire) and self-preserving. He's just trying to get the hell out of dodge and doesn't give two shits about trying to topple umbrella or save sherry or whatever. He just wants to get out before the city is nuked or the police station blows up. That may change if you were to put ellie in the position of sherry, but even so, Joel only grows to care about Ellie over time. Claire saves Sherry within one evening. Joel is annoyed with ellie and doesn't trust her for the beginning of the game. So yes, Joel would survive but likely wouldn't damage umbrella or fight bioweapons like Leon does afterwards!

Adding to what you said, I agree Joel wouldn't actively chase Umbrella down. Hell, I bet if he gets his hands on a working car, he will be out the city before dawn. That would especially apply if he were to protect Ellie or Sarah. If we're talking about post outbreak Joel there's no way in hell he will look for help in the RPD. So yeah, he will play it smart and keep his distance from the center of the city and will just work on making his way out.
