speaking of Les mis fix it fanfic —if you’re into Post-Seine Valvert stuff I recommend reading @breadvidence’s new tragicomedy “Dammit”! Because I’ve been enjoying it and it deserves more attention! And if you enjoyed my recent fanfic, it’s in a similar vein (brick-inspired anti-police post-seine black comedy Valvert that’s still very sincere) and I feel like we’d have an overlap in audiences XD.

A modern au fusion between the Brick and the modern-setting Dallas production of the musical , it’s a fic about Javert struggling to adjust to life after quitting his job while Jean Valjean struggles to adjust to Cosette going off to college.

It’s also a “lots of people live” AU where (many of) Les Amis survive their modernized-version-of-the-rebellion, and are put on trial for the murder of Claquesous/Le Cabuc. Apparently some of them are going to play a bigger role in the story later on, which is always fun.

I’m always excited by Valvert fics that Get the anti-police themes of the novel, and also that understand things like “Javert can really suck as a person, but he’s also deeply pathetic” and “Jean Valjean has his own very weird horrible angst outside of his relationship with Javert.”.

Idk I enjoy Valvert fics that don’t make them “perfect soulmates who slot together like puzzle pieces” but “deeply weird broken old men being extremely Strange around each other in a way that’s a bit of an emotionally complicated and Questionably healthy train wreck.” I just think that’s fun!

Writing Modern Steve Roger's Health Issues: A compendium

AKA How do Steve Rogers' MCU canon illnesses hold up in a modern setting?  

I am writing something that is SO NICHE and so NERDY I feel absolutely, positively deviant about it. Who knew you could have this much fun while eating a burrito and sitting in the sun on your back porch? 

OKAY! This one goes out to all of you writing modern AU's with a modern Steve Rogers. (There are literally dozens of us!). Let's go.

So, I find it somewhat problematic when people write disabled or otherwise medically complicated characters and are wishy-washy about the diagnosis they have. In real life, everyone I know with ongoing medical issues is a fucking expert on their exact shit. A great tumblr reference for disabled characters is Cripple Characters, but I also use reddit threads to read about people’s day to day experiences with different issues in their own words. If nothing else, just decide what your character has and take ten minutes and read through a basic website article about it. 

So let's walk through what modern Steve's medical history and diagnoses might be. If you feel like I missed any details or got things wrong, happy to have comments to that end.

We'll start with the list of “ailments,” going with the MCU canon and combining the images from the museum exhibit and screen shots of Steve’s enlistment forms:

Asthma

Scoliosis

Fallen arches

Partial deafness

Scarlet Fever, Rheumatic Fever

Heart arrhythmia

High blood pressure

Palpitation or pounding in heart

Easy fatigability

Stomach ulcers

Pernicious anemia

Nervous trouble of any sort

Caveat: I am not a doctor, but I am a person who enjoys reading medical journal articles about illnesses I do and don’t have. The human body is a fascinating and terrible place to live. Talk to me about your medical complications - I will always find them interesting. I love small talk about Crohn’s disease and/or extremely graphic details about the time you had surgery because one of your wrist bones was the wrong length. 

Sucks To Your Assmar: Asthma! How has asthma changed? 

Kids who have their asthma well managed at a young age are going to have less scarring and lung damage (this is called airway remodeling). Thus a modern kid will likely have less severe asthma than a kid born in Steve’s time. Further, allergy medicines got way better from the 1990s, so kids with allergy induced asthma would have had fewer attacks. Fewer attacks as kids = less severe asthma as they age. 

I would also note that asthma is highly connected to environmental issues. If Steve grew up in a house with cigarette smoke, cockroaches, rats, or mold present, as is fairly easy to imagine, especially without dehumidifiers in a swampy Brooklyn summer, those are environmental factors that would have made his asthma much worse. 

They are also all factors that kids today certainly face, depending on how you write your modern Steve’s childhood. While people today certainly can have very severe asthma, it’s also entirely possible that modern Steve’s relationship to his asthma is pretty chill and easy to manage. (My partner has relatively severe asthma with a lot of environmental triggers; modern allergy medicine was a big game changer.)

Let’s talk about scoliosis ~~

There are a lot of variations to how scoliosis impacts people. I have very minor scoliosis and it's barely a thing in my life. I’m not trying to speak for everyone, but for what it’s worth, there are professional athletes with spinal fusion. I used Kyra Condie as my justification for writing climbing coach post-spinal fusion small Steve Rogers in one fic. My younger brother and best friend in high school both had spinal fusions. 

In reality the athletic and physical abilities of people with spinal fusion vary pretty much exactly as much as people without spinal fusion, so you have a lot of leeway for how you decide to write a character with scoliosis. I recommend reddit threads to read about people talking about how their bodies felt before and after spinal fusion, or why they decided not to have the surgery, if you want to get a sense of how it might affect your character’s day to day life.

Wait, so how tall is modern small Steve Rogers? 

You can see in this article that gains in height post scoliosis corrective surgery/spinal fusion varies, but the mean was 27 mm (1 inch) and the maximum was 66 mm (2.5 inches). 

The more severe the curve in the spine, the more height gained with surgery. 

We know Steve had scoliosis, we don’t know how severe it was (do we?). But if he was 5’4” without spinal fusion, and with all of his childhood fevers, and possible poor nutrition due to the Great Depression and untreated stomach ulcers, then it’s very reasonable that a modern Steve raised with proper nutrition and his gastrointestinal issues (see below!) properly treated and a spinal fusion could be easily 1-10 inches taller. 

I think it’s great if you want to write modern Small Steve as 5’4” - but I tend to write him as 5’7” or so. 

I think it is entirely likely that a modern Steve Rogers could end up being 6 feet tall given modern medical intervention and a healthy digestive system and adequate nutrition. As an example of how people with more or less the same genetics having different heights due to environmental factors, I know of one family of four brothers that immigrated from Italy in the 40s. Their height was 100% correlated to their age when they moved to the US/started having access to food: the oldest brother was around 5’4” and the youngest around 6 feet. The oldest was also a chain smoker and worked full time from around age 8, so you know, he was a fucking badass 5'4" Italian guy, if that's not clear.

What about fallen arches? 

Fun story, but I have fallen arches/flat feet and had a lot of foot pain as a kid, but I thought it was normal. I wear custom orthotics and/or birkenstocks and do exercises to strengthen my feet muscles and it's fine now as long as I remember to do the things I just mentioned. My dad had to have multiple surgeries on his feet, so I think it helped that they caught it earlier in me. 

Should I write modern non-serum Steve as deaf? 

Maybe! I think it’s lovely when people write characters with hearing issues. There are great blogs that cover ways to do that well (a good link, another one, and another one and I think this one on hearing aids is particularly good if you are trying to bring in subtle day to day routine differences a character that wears hearing aids may have. Another great option is, again, reddit, especially for questions around how sexual intimacy might vary in small ways that can be nice to bring in. (I am working on a fic with a seeing character whose ex is blind and also read a lot of couples first hand experience with sexual intimacy around that dynamic on reddit). 

But how likely is it that modern Steve would be deaf? 

I think that it’s reasonably likely that Steve’s hearing issues were a result of Scarlet Fever, which is a bacterial infection that can result in rheumatic fever, an inflammatory condition that develops in more severe cases of scarlet fever. 

Scarlet fever caused deafness - in fact, both Helen Keller and Thomas Edison had hearing loss due to scarlet fever infections. Further, sustained fevers of over 104 degrees can also cause hearing loss, so there is a reasonable chance that some other fever caused Steve’s hearing issues. 

Today, the kind of hearing loss caused by fevers and infections can usually be surgically repaired or never occur because we have better antibiotics and better medicines to treat fevers. However, I have a friend who has partial hearing loss and lots of other life long nervous system and fatigue issues due to complications from childhood chicken pox in the 80s (this vaccine came around in 1995).

I don’t know if it’s canon or fanfiction, but I often see Steve as having one bad ear. For what it’s worth, hearing loss in one ear is much less common than hearing loss in both ears. 

However, potential causes of hearing loss in one ear are infections that result in a high fever and some kind of head trauma, both of which are easy to imagine would have affected a Steve born in 1918, and while possible in a modern Steve, also easier to avoid. 

Heart Stuff: Heart arrhythmia, High blood pressure, Palpitation of pounding in heart, Easy fatigability

The aforementioned fevers that can cause hearing loss can also cause heart issues. I think it’s reasonably likely that Steve’s heart issues were from his fevers as a young kid, but I often write him with a congenital heart defect, because why not? 

These days, most of the time, such issues are detected at or before birth and fixed when the person is a baby, but there are plenty of heart issues that can require multiple heart surgeries at various points. Regardless, a modern Steve would most likely either have had access to corrective surgery or medication to manage these heart conditions. Which is not to say that he wouldn’t suffer mental and physical trauma from this medical complication. 

There are plenty of professional athletes you can find who have all of the above heart issues. And plenty of people with heart issues who have no interest in being professional athletes, so like, follow your bliss. 

Digestive System Stuff: Easy fatigability, Stomach ulcers, Pernicious anemia

I have easy fatigability under heart stuff too, because lots of shit can make you tired. 

My personal head canon is that Steve Rogers has celiac disease and/or lactose intolerance, it would cause all of the above. Both can also lead to poor growth - in fact falling off growth charts is one of the most common symptoms of celiac disease in children. 

While people have been aware of celiac disease since there were people, gluten wasn’t identified as the clear cause till the 50s. 

I typically write modern Steve with some kind of food allergy, and I think that addresses quite a few of his canon medical complications. 

Because so many causes of this category of symptoms are relatively easily solved with modern medical intervention/avoiding the problem, I would point folks towards Crohn’s disease if you are looking to write a modern character with medical issue that is more likely to be an ongoing source of similar medical complications today.

(Also, kids with Crohn’s are likely to have reduced height. I have a friend who has Crohn's whose 3 siblings are well over 6 feet and he is around 5'8" (so 4-6 inches aka 11+ cm shorter due to his severe childhood illness).)

Nervous trouble of any sort

Kids with medical complications and food allergies are much more likely to have anxiety. I’m so proud of all the kids making it through the day with anxiety. Luff you anxiety kids, I see you working twice as hard to be present as the non-anxious kids. Tough as hell. Give yourself a high five. I’m so damn proud of you.

Sinusitis and Frequent colds

I mean, god bless modern decongestants and allergy meds. Celiac disease and lactose intolerance can both cause sinus issues, so here is another one of Steve's ailments that can be "cured" through that diagnosis.

Other stuff

When you look at the above, you can see a lot of scenarios where modern era Steve, like many children/adults today, had multiple surgeries and serious and scary health complications as a child, but as an adult would appear as a relatively healthy able bodied person, with the possibility of even becoming a top athlete if he was so inclined.  It’s also likely that some issues like chronic fatigue etc, might linger into adulthood as relatively invisible illnesses that nonetheless affect his everyday. 

In some ways his character arc given the advances of modern medicine could mimic his arc due to the serum. 

Being medically complicated as a kid sucks. Even if you have surgeries to treat and/or learn how to live with things like Crohn’s and celiac and reduce flare ups, lingering mental health trauma can have an impact. 

Lastly and most importantly, I have a personal headcanon that young Steve Rogers of any era spent a lot of time sick in bed and staring into a mirror learning how to raise one eyebrow and perform other eyebrow gymnastics so he could more effectively sass his nurses. 

IN CONCLUSION:

I think it's actually reasonable for an author to say, "My modern Steve never had any fevers, and got his severe lactose intolerance diagnosed as a baby, and had good nutrition, had medications/clean environment that prevented his asthma."

So this Steve is 6 feet tall and healthy as long as he doesn't eat dairy and takes his daily zyrtec (cetirizine - it's an allergy med). The only medical issue he has from canon left is scoliosis, flat feet, and an astigmatism.

You can also choose to write a Steve with more complex medical issues, and there are lots of things that can be good and interesting and value about that. I think the main thing is to pick a diagnosis and write it realistically, hopefully this helps some with that!

So, just thought of a couple questions for the blog. One, how much do each of the kids (Kanako and Asriel included) use the internet? Do they have some sort of internet fame due to the whole barrier thing? Second; What country is this Mount Ebott in? I've seen some different interpretations of where it is, from the US, to Canada, to the UK, to a fantasy world, and even sometimes fictional countries on Earth. So which one of those is this Mt. Ebott? Sorry if it's a lot. I'm just really curious!

Sorry for everyone who has asked me stuff and I haven't answered it yet. This week there has been construction work on my house, and I haven't really had time to think of the asks.

So let's get to the questions.

How much do each of the kids (Kanako and Asriel included) use the internet?

I don't have exact numbers. But they use it less than average compared to the average time spent on the internet by children and teens.

The humans were orphans from an orphanage that didn't have any internet. While Asriel and Kanako didn't grow up with easy access to the internet, even after the barrier broke, the children were given computers and phones over the first years after the monsters were free. They just never got really attached to it, as modern children do, because they were raised most of their lives without it. But as they get older, they do get more into the internet.

Do they have some sort of internet fame due to the whole barrier thing?

Only Frisk and Asriel do. Frisk because they were the only human to appear on live television for all the underground to see. So all the underground knows who Frisk is. And Asriel, because he's the prince of the underground... Well, ex-prince, since they no longer live underground.

The other humans, since they weren't shown to all the underground like how Mettaton showed Frisk, most of the monster kind don't even realize that they are the other souls (except the monster that met them in their journeys), since they heard that they died to collect their souls. They don't bring it up because, after everything, they just want a normal life without having to deal with the fame. Especially Melody, she doesn't want people to know that she was the one that caused the Snowdin accident. Even though it was just self-defense to try to survive, Melody doesn't want to face the families of the monsters she killed.

Even Kloverko doesn't have fame. I did say that they don't hide the fact that they are a fusion. But they don't just tell everyone that fact; they just tell their family and friends about that fact. So it isn't very well known.

What country is this Mount Ebott in?

My AU is in a fictional version of the US. With most of the past being pretty much the same but the present being fictional,.

Why? I don't feel like writing a full-back story about a fictional country. And the present is imaginary, just because I want to avoid talking about recent years in the world in general.

Alicent was not sure what she had expected when Aegon finally told her he had a real head of security and would stop “bumming Criston off of Tower PR's security desk,” but it wasn't this. He'd gone through legitimate channels this time, astounding given his fame was half “king's son who abdicated” and half “social media,” and still he managed to find someone who barely looked like a fit for the job.

The table where she sat overlooked the couch where Aegon had situated himself, sprawled out and taking up the whole thing as he typed away on his phone, far enough to give him some privacy but still close enough to get to him quickly if needed. That was one point in her favor, at the very least; but her even being a woman almost immediately negated the singular point. Her oldest son had found a steady girlfriend, had been dating her for years without incident, but Alicent could not forget how he'd been before the relationship.

She took a deep breath as her thumb gently picked at the spot where the paper for the coffee cup's sleeve was glued together, and finally walked to the table. It was nothing. Aegon was better now, he had agreed to let her vet this new security–and it wasn't like this woman was his type anyway.

“Miss Farwynd.”

She sat up straight at that, no longer leaning almost completely over the table. An easy smile, so charming that it made Alicent inhale a bit harder than necessary, pulled up the corners of her lips as her eyes lazily trailed up to her face. They were big and black, and Alicent dug her thumb nail into the seam of the paper sleeve.

“You can just call me Aldreda”, her island brogue was unexpectedly lilting, “no need to be formal when I'm the employee.”

“That is precisely the need for it.” She sat down before the other woman even had a chance to respond.

“Oh, come on now, not even Aegon calls me that.” Miss Farwynd's eyes darted briefly over her head to look at her son. It was all at once another point in her favor, a relief, and frustratingly disheartening. Alicent pressed her lips together, finally tearing the corner of the seam from the strip of glue to keep from humming in annoyance. The only thing she needed to concern herself with was seeing if Miss Farwynd was a good fit for the entourage her son surrounded himself with, if she seemed like she could keep him safe when he wasn't under her own or Yorick’s watchful eyes, not how being the focus of her attention felt. Even if this brief interaction did make it easy to understand what Aegon said she did to his comment section. She'd apparently drowned out the death threats and assorted vitriol from his “antis” by “summoning a flock of lesbians with her presence in the background.”

Alicent swallowed before she continued. “Aegon is Aegon, and I am not where he got that from.”

“Still though, I prefer it.”

“Miss Farwynd–” Alicent cut herself off as the other woman stretched in her seat, shoulders rolling as her back slightly arched and her large eyes squinted shut. She dug her nail into the already partially pried apart seam and started pushing, neatly tearing apart the sleeve so it stayed in one long piece. If she focused on that, she wouldn't focus on how attractive her son's security detail was.

“I get it, Lady Alicent, I do. Mainland customs and titles and formality and decorum-I don't give a shit. You were married to the king, you're not stupid. There's as much weight to my name as yours, especially back home. I come to the mainland though, I get to be…just some guy they let work security for an obnoxious influencer half the country doesn't like,” she gestured vaguely towards the couch where Aegon was sprawled with his coffee and his phone, “call me Aldreda.”

“If you're just using this job to run from something, I don't know how comfortable I am with you protecting my son. Aegon needs to be your priority.”

“Aegon being my priority helps run from things,” she leaned back in her seat now, one arm resting on the back of her chair as she took her coffee and brought it closer to her face, “that's all you need to know on that though. Can't go revealing tragic backstories to people I just met, especially when you don't get the fuckin’ Kracken Daily on the mainland spilling the worst versions of it.”

She stifled a laugh into her fist. It wasn't funny, or at least that's what she told herself. When Aldreda lowered her coffee from her lips, the easy, charming smile was back and it radiated as much self-satisfaction as Rhaenyra's smile ever had. The edge of the coffee cup sleeve was now fully free from the glue, the sheet awkwardly trying to unfurl while Alicent still held the cup. She did not have a type, and it was not this specific.

Silently, Aldreda got up from the table and walked back over to the counter. She was at least as tall as Criston, and the black slacks her pullover was tucked into hugged her ass a nearly infuriating amount. Heat flooded Alicent’s cheeks as she forced herself to look back down at her coffee and her hands. She didn't know what she had expected, except maybe better of herself. There wasn't any time for this in her life, she was a mother and a public figure and she was trying to get her ex-husband to update the will he hadn't touched since Helaena was born because the cancer was getting worse; further, this was her son's employee. Checking her out was nearly as unethical as the king doing as much to the daughter of the royal family's PR manager.

A second paper sleeve dropped in front of her, and Alicent looked up to see Aldreda leaned casually against the table. Her expression seemed even more self-satisfied than before, her lips parted in the smile this time and her black eyes lidded.

“That's much better,” she sat back down as she spoke, “we're familiar already.”

Alicent watched as she leaned forward again, propping her elbows on the table instead of draping her arms across the whole surface and lacing her fingers together to rest her chin atop them. The same expression from when she'd come back from the counter never left Aldreda's face. It was almost overwhelming being the sole recipient of that black gaze, but if she looked away Alicent would probably be disappointed.

“So, what did you want to talk to me about, Lady Alicent?”

“Just Alicent will do. All things being equal.” She tacked the second part on quickly, and in lieu of picking at the glued seam of the sleeve, she simply started drinking her coffee a little faster than was usual. She could control that at least.

I started it going "oh is this sympathetic [character]?" and then certain chapters hit and I went "oh noooooooooo" with eyes the size of saucers. Really interesting. Author has been going through it though.

I was part of this one, but so were about twenty other people, so I feel justified in linking this one. Incredible interlocking series of comics, stories and art, doing a single slice of life in a city when everyone's powers are swapped, and what happens to the city's superheros and villains when they try to recover and fix things. Gilad Pellaeon. I find it very hard to get into his headspace and I also tend to hc him as aromantic, which I know is not the general view of his character.

🍑-if I were to make a connection between my favorite character and another work I like, what would it be?

I'm going to assume my Maximilian Veers goes through the Odyssey in Space AU doesn't count.

The question being favorite makes this hard, tbh. Like, if you were to say in general, I think a Rise of The Guardians fusion would be cool with Vader as Pitch bc of the whole General Pitchner thing.

Also, so many favorite characters. Okay, I'm just gonna pick Don Simon Ysidro and stick him in star wars. I think he'd make an interesting immortal sith lord lurking in the shadows of the galaxy.

🍍-AU likes and dislikes?

Biggest dislikes tend to be modern AUs or historical AUs because I feel like the characters lose a lot of their context if the story wasn't already set on Earth in those time periods to begin with.

(Side note but a Star Wars high school AU would be way more interesting in the high school was still in the Star Wars universe. Just saying.)

That being said, I'll accept a lot of AUs so long as they have good and/or interesting worldbuilding. For those reasons daemon and soulmate AUs tend to be of interest (especially if the soulmates account for a and ace spec identities), as well as those "what would happen if I changed this one little thing" AUs.

One of my favourite genres has always been the spy action thriller. I especially love them when they're a bit tongue in cheek and are a metaphor for a relationship writ large. They're fun and stylish and sexy, and full of blockbuster action scenes.

That's what I tried to mash with OFMD in this fic. I always try to practice something new when I write these sorts of fics. For this one, it was action movie pacing and a plot full of intrigue.

This is very near the end! There's probably 2-3 chapters before it wraps and I'm posting about a chapter a week.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try to, most of the time. As long as I feel there's something to reply to. It's the least that I can do, though sometimes when comments pile up in the inbox it can also feel a bit overwhelming. And sometimes I let them sit there for too long at which point I feel weird answering at all.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I'm very much a happily ever after type of a writer but I do have two SessKag one shots that have unhappy endings. Foil (M) and Vagary (M).

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Super hard to say, since I'm all for happy endings. I'm restricting my choices to Jily fics since I was tagged for this question thing by my jily fam so... I guess Fall Fluff! It's a 500 word ficlet but the ending is especially sweet. 😉

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Hardly ever. There's annoying comments here and there, sure. I've got anon hate once from someone anti that particular ship. And I did have a popular chapter fic with a plot twist that became somewhat controversial. Hate is a strong word, but I got enough upset comments on it that though it's been a decade, I sometimes still cringe a little if I see a comment notification on that fic.

9. Do you write smut. If so what kind?

No. I have only one fic that's rated E on AO3. Some of my M rated fics might have sex scenes, particularly the chapter fics. But I don't write smut, I don't even like the word smut and its connotation. Because I like to write sex scenes that are tasteful, that are a balancing act of giving just enough detail and description. I like to focus on the feelings and the relationship development and I don't like naming body parts.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I've only ever written one proper crossover, where characters from different series interact (though even that took place in AU setting so it wasn't a crossover in the purest form) but it's never been published. I have done multiple fusion type crossovers, though, in which I take characters from one franchise (Jily) and insert them into the world of another established franchise (The Office). I'd say my Jily The Office AU fusion (In the Dumps, Rated T) and my SessKag Star Wars AU fusion (A Leap of Faith, Rated G) are the craziest, in that I've never watched The Office nor been a Star Wars fan lol

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Once, that I know of. My popular SessKag fic Chain of Love (M) was posted without my knowledge on Wattpad. After a reader alerted me, I tried contacting the thief. When they never responded, I contacted Wattpad and it was promptly taken down.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I have. Some of them are pre-AO3, though, so they're not linked with the translated work function. But the one that does show properly on AO3, is a Chinese translation for my SessKag one shot Cold (G).

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

I've made a few efforts with an IRL friend of mine, but they've both fizzled out sooner or later. I'm not sure I'm the co-writer type, honestly. 😅 I used to brainstorm a lot with my friends when I first started writing fic so that was co-writing of sorts, I guess.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

Since I've been writing them for half my life now, I guess I have to say SessKag lol

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Their Halcyon Days (M), my Jily chapter fic. There's plenty other Jily fics I like the ideas of, but will never likely finish. Shoot Me Straight to the Top (T) and the Bodyguard AU (M), for example.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Brevity lol. I like my one shots and I've been told I'm good at creating a whole story or scene in very few words. I'd say I'm also good at writing dialogue and conveying emotion. I also like semi-open endings, so I have a knack at ending my one shots at a point where it would be easy to imagine a continuation for them.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Inconsistency. When I don't have a writing routine established, such as now, I will only bother writing anything when I feel like it. And generally I feel like it once every other month, at most. If I don't have a writing routine going, I can happily go for months without writing a single word. I really should work on getting a routine going one of these years. Also I can't stand editing. I don't do first drafts. Or any drafts, really. I want to just write it once and then post it. Which is what I tend to do. I do proofread and do line editing, but I don't tend to do any deeper edits and have little patience to go make bigger adjustments to the story afterwards because in my mind it's finished and I've already moved on from it.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I don't hate it, I guess, but I don't see the point of it? Having terminology of another language in a fic is fine, imo. Cultural concepts like kimono or samurai don't really have good enough translations. Also I think using Japanese honorifics in dialogue serves a purpose. You could replace some with Mr and Miss, sure, but when you get to the nitty gritty, there are hierarchy levels and whatnot that English equivalents do not convey. But having entire lines of dialogue be in another language seems a bit unnecessary to me, 90% of the time.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

I've since deleted the fic since I was never going to continue it, but the first fic I ever published was a next gen fic for my favourite book series growing up: David Eddings' The Belgariad and the Malloreon.

ooh, okay for a crossover / fusion it would be really fun to actually put javi p in something like CSI (i'm currently rewatching it with my hubs) because he could say some outrageously cheesy lines and it would be fun to see his expressions at some of the murders.

🍍 What kind of AUs do you like? Are there any AUs you hate or just generally have beef with?

i am a sucker for romcoms, so often i like throwing a character in a film/tv show that isn't romantic and make it (because, this is me). but i also really love modern au's, especially when the characters have no connection with modern times. I've done it a bit in other fandoms and it's always fun getting them to deal with technology or IG haha.

I think my favorites change from day to day and year to year, but RIGHT NOW I'm fond of these ones:

At the End of the Road (the Untamed, Wangxian) I like this one because I feel it was a successful fulfillment of my artistic ambition, which was to write a sexy and unhinged fill for the prompt "practice edging". It basically wrote itself, I didn't overthink it, it's hot and funny and even has emotions! Also it has by far the most kudos, so it's my favorite in the way that your favorite child is the one who brings home lots of awards from school.

2. A Heady Cocktail (the Untamed, Lan Wangji/Jiang Cheng) is also Just Smut, but I am fond of it because it's my manifestation of the one specific flavor of this ship that I like. Two prickly characters who only know how to soften up in the presence of their mutual beloved, alone together and figuring it out. I had a good time playing with how Wei Wuxian was involved in their dynamic even while not physically present. 3. My Apple Tree, My Brightness (The Untamed, Wangxian) This fic is hella good and makes everyone cry, even me! It's a science fiction AU where post-siege LWJ, in seclusion, runs simulations to try to figure out how he could have saved Wei Wuxian. Spoiler: he couldn't, but it turns out to be worthwhile, anyway. The ending is especially well written, IMO, and the sci fi worldbuilding is pleasingly deft. I put this third on the list but it's possibly actually my favorite.

4. Veritas (the Untamed, Wangxian) A Fake Dating fic where a pining Lan Wangji agrees to be Wei Wuxian's "terrible" fake date to the Qin Su/Jin Guangyao wedding. Some parts of it feel rushed or underdone to me, but I'm proud of the humor and the climactic set piece, and The People do seem to really like it! I don't naturally think of myself as a humorous writer, but perhaps I am...good at it?? Oh, and, fun fact, I did more research for this fic than any other (not counting listening to a lot of vintage goth music for the Quiet Room).

5. Anchor Point (Sherlock, Johnlock) I'm only giving one slot to Sherlock fic in this list, and it has to go to this weird cool thing I made. It was for a kinkmeme prompt, a Sherlock/Truman Show fusion where Sherlock is Truman and "John" is an actor hired to play his John Watson. Mycroft is the mastermind. Writing this fic was a really educational exercise in making it seem like something Really Big was going on while not being able actually explain the details (a trick I learned from Moftiss, LOLLLLL) It was very tricky and fun and I'm still quite proud of it.

That's a hard question, but the first thing coming to my mind is how Cersei and Victoria Grayson (from the TV show Revenge, I don't often talk about her here, but she is one my fave characters ever) are similar characters. They are driven by their love for their children, are ambitious and determined, are the "queens", and have a secret affair. You can draw parallels between them. As for a fusion/crossover, I'm not sure, but I could picture Cersei in a Revenge AU where Sansa comes back under a secret identity to avenge her father's death, thinking Cersei is behind this, and with the resolve to cause her downfall.

Well, we all know it's Cersei 😂😭 But here's a few headcanons I have:

She has always hidden the bruises Robert gave her from Jaime because she knew if he found out what he did to her, he would kill him without thinking twice of the consequences (for them, for their children). It's also a way for her to protect Jaime, and I believe when he told her he would kill everyone in 1x03, she got worried and that's why she went to Lancel to kill her stupid husband (plus the fact Jaime ran away). In her mind, if someone ever found out about the wine Lancel gave to Robert, he would be casualty for Cersei.

Cersei has a complicated relationship with sex (I've been meaning to write an essay about this theme, but anyway...). She hates it, sees it as a chore, finds no pleasure in it, unless it's with Jaime. I think her perception of it would change drastically if Jaime and her had the freedom they wanted.

When her stupid husband got her pregnant, she never felt any love toward the "child" she was carrying. It felt like a parasite to her, and she only loved being pregnant with Jaime's children. When she got her abortion, she felt only relief. Also, I always use the book plot for this storyline, because I hate what they did with it in the show.

Cersei loves cooking and baking with her children. I always picture Cersei inheriting this love from Joanna (especially in Modern AUs, but in the Pentos AU, she finds joy in cooking and baking with little Joanna). Joanna (her mother) would have taught her the basics of cooking back when she was a little girl and she would do the same with her babies 🥺 Also, she has a sweet tooth, even more so when she is pregnant.

Jaime and Cersei used to steal (lemon) cakes in the kitchen of Casterly Rock.

Hamefura Pokémon AU

This is an idea I have been working for a long while. It was inspired by @dulcito-on-ao3 ‘s fanfic Cute and Fluffy! and @logo-comics Fortune Lover Pokémon DLC prompt.

This crossover is an AU where Fortune Lover was an otome game/pókemon game fusion. Maybe something like Scarlet and Violet where the protagonist goes to the Academy and you can choose one of several storylines to follow. The events of FL 2 could be added to beef up the plot.

Here are some important notes:

Edit: @famousnintendopokemonlamp made a point that it’s odd for Eevee to only bond with mages. I changed that and made it so that they are just rare in the wild.

Edit 2: Switched Sandslash in Keith’s Team for Phanpy since I thought it fitted him better. Added Fidough to Maria’s Team.

Edit 3: Mary’s Tropius is a gift from Alan.

After discussing it with @dulcito-on-ao3 I decided that the setting will be modern but still retaining the noble society elements. Meaning that Sorcier is still a kingdom with nobility but they have access to modern technology like Pokédex’s, Rotom Phones, etc.

The Pokémon take the place of Magical Creatures. Normal animals still exist in this world because I don’t want the implication that humans eat Pokémon.

While Pokémon exist all over this world, they are most common in the Kingdom of Sorcier. Researchers think it’s because Sorcier has more magic than anywhere else so Pokémon are attracted to it - because they are Magical Creatures in this setting.

While magic is still mainly found on nobles, both nobles and commoners can become Pokémon Trainers. But, Pokémon Trained by mages are usually stronger than those Trained by non-mages, especially those Pokémon with typing that are compatible with their Trainer’s magic.

Mages whose Magic Element is compatible to a Pokémon typing can boost the power that Pokémon with their magic.

Eevee is a special Pokémon in Sorcier as they are very rare in the wild, so dedicated breeders exist. Even amongst nobles they are uncommon and are often a regarded as a symbol of great status, especially if they are evolved. The characters who have one are:

Katarina Claes - Shiny Eevee that later evolves into a Shiny Umbreon. Was a gift from her father.

Maria Campbell - regular Eevee that later evolves into an Espeon. By chance she found a wild Eevee and befriended it.

The Princes - Gerald (a small and fluffy Flareon); Alan (a Glaceon): Ian (an Espeon); Geoffrey (a large Vaporeon)

Selena Burke - shy Eevee wearing an Everstone but later gains confidence and evolves into a Sylveon.

Noelia Flores - a Flareon. One of her few evolved Pokémon.

Katarina’s Pokémon know about her past life and support her on her plans to avoid doom.

Katarina remembering her past life is part of a plan that the Legendary Pokémon Ho-oh and Celebi came up with.

Almost all of Katarina’s Pokémon are Shiny. The in-game explanation was to show how privileged and spoiled Villainess Katarina was by having a team consisting of rare Shiny Pokémon.

The Pokémon League equivalent is called The Pokémon Tourney. It was originally exclusive to nobles but for the last 100 years, commoners have been allowed to participate.

Trainers must be at least 15 years old to participate.

To qualify, they need to earn at least eight Honours (aka Badges) by battling against the Arena Champions, the ‘Gym Leaders’ of this setting (Arena Champion comes from Champion/Championne d'Arène, the French term used for Gym Leaders).

The Evil Team is called Team Dark. Members include Marchioness Dieke, Sora (later deserted), and Sarah. Team Dark seeks conquer Sorcier and use Pokémon to rule the world. Most members use Dark Type Pokémon.

This AU is GeoKata endgame, at least with how I’m writing it.

Here are the main Pokémon Teams of the main characters:

Katarina Claes

Shiny Eevee/Shiny Umbreon ♂ (Nickname: Biscuit) - starter/first Pokémon; he evolved into Umbreon after Katarina awakened from her Dark Magic coma.

Shiny Ekans/Shiny Arbok (Nickname: Noodle) - found it injured in her field and nursed to health; represents Katarina’s toy snakes.

Shiny Pumpkaboo/Shiny Gourgeist (Nickname: Pumpkin) - found in the woods near the Royal Villa; represents Katarina’s farming.

Shiny Pawniard/Shiny Bisharp (Nickname: Blue) - gifted by Gerald on her 16th birthday; represents Katarina’s sword fighting.

Poochyena (Nickname: Pochi) - found during the Keith’s Kidnapping equivalent event. This Poochyena has darker fur than a regular Poochyena, being almost black; it is the result of Team Dark’s experiments to empower Dark Type Pokémon; similar to a Shadow Pokémon but without “the door to it’s heart” closed. It represents Katarina’s Dark Magic and canon Pochi.

Absol (Nickname: Vanilla) - found during the equivalent of the mission where Sarah has a Dragon Dark Familiar; represents Katarina’s “knowledge of future events and desire to prevent her doom.

Other Pokémon Katarina has are: Shiny Galarian Yamask found in the ruins used for the practical exam; Shiny Flygon found as a Trapinch during a visit to the Adeth Duchy.

Gerald Stuart

Flareon ♀ (Nickname: Fluffy) - starterfirst Pokémon; smaller and fluffier than the average Flareon, making it extremely cute; knows Scary Face. Represent show Geordo looks like a handsome fairy tale prince but has a hidden, sadistic/scary side.

Bisharp - a knight Pokémon to protect royalty

Aegislash - in reference to Gerald using a sword

Charizard - I thought it would be cool if Gerald rode on this Pokémon.

Litleo - a birthday gift from Katarina; lions are a symbol of royalty

Tyrantrum - another royal Pokémon; red body with golden crest match Gerald's colors

Keith Claes

Tyranitar - starter; originally a Larvitar he befriended before being adopted by the Claes; small Pokémon that grows big and powerful, like how Keith was a timid kid that grew confident

Cottonee - Something small and cute because Keith is so precious

Golurk - a reference to Keith's Earth golems

Garchomp - caught as a Gible during a visit to the Adeth Duchy; a connection with Millidiana who has Dragon-Types

Bonsly/Sudowoodo  - another tiny cutie; it grows tall and lanky and looks like a Grass-Type, referencing how Keith helps Katarina with her farm

Phanpy/Donphan - yet another tiny cutie that grows into a powerful Pokémon

Mary Hunt

Lilligant - starter/first Pokémon; an elegant Pokémon and it even wears a flower on its head like Mary

Roserade - another elegant Pokémon

Vespiquen - because Mary is like a queen, plus it is good for her plants

Meganium - another good Pokémon to have in a garden since its breath can revive plants

Tropius - a gift from Alan. I just added this one because it grows fruit on its neck.

Serperior - another regal Pokémon; I think Mary would get a Snivy in response to Katarina getting her Ekans

Alan Stuart

Glaceon ♂ (Nickname: Gliss) - starter/first Pokémon; he chooses to evolve his Eevee into a Glaceon instead of a Vaporeon to stand out.

Gyarados - originally a Magikarp represents how Alan went from feeling inferior to Geordo to finding his strengths.

Lapras - it sings enchanting melodies.

Primarina - a birthday gift from Mary; another Pokémon that sings

Kricketune - another musical Pokémon

Shiny Tyrantrum - a royal Pokémon; the shiny is blue with a silver crest, so the colors match Alan.

Sophia Ascart

Gardevoir - starter/first Pokémon; it has red eyes like Sophia, and it's part Fairy-type representing Sophia’s dream of being a fairy.

Shiny Phantump - red-and-white colors

White Flower Flabebe - white color matches her hair

Togetic - white color; part Flying-type to match her Wind Magic

Clefairy - another fairy; people say this Pokemon came from the moon so it connects to Sophia being a reincarnation from “out of this [Sorcier] world”

Galarian Ponyta/Rapidash - it’s an unicorn! What kind of girl who loves stories wouldn’t want an Unicorn?

Nicol Ascart

Swanna - starter/first Pokémon - swans are beautiful but dangerous; Nicol is gorgeous, and I headcanon that you don't want to make him angry

Noctowl - represents how smart he is

Corviknight - dark plumage like how Nicol has dark hair

Chatot - ironic because Nicol is a quiet person

Liepard - in reference to the dream of being a cat

Shinx -  because Nicol dealing with an energetic kitty is funny

Maria Campbell

Sylveon ♀ (Nickname: Caramel) - starter/first Pokémon; wild Pokémon that bonded with her after she discovered her magic. Fairy-Type is the closest thing to Light. (It was originally an Espeon due to it being Umbreon’s counterpart).

Teddiursa (Nickname: Alexander) - meet during Keith’s Kidnapping equivalent event; represent canon Alexander

Audino - a Pokémon used by healers

Pikachu - Maria is the protagonist of FL, like how Ash is Pokémon's

Alcremie (Ruby Cream form) - represents Maria's baking skills; Ruby Cream form because pink is Maria’s color.

Fidough - another representation of Maria’s baking skills, this time bread instead of sweets.

Raphael Walt/Sirius Dieke

Shuppet (Nickname: Orion) - starter/first Pokémon; it was Sirius' Pokémon initially; it knows what happened and bonded with Raphael because it saw how sad and lonely he was. It absorbs negative emotions so it would try to help Raphael.

Phantump - may or may not be the original Sirius Dieke; has some unusual coloration: red leaves and gray eyes.

Sableye - A Dark/Ghost Type to match his Dark magic and how a vengeful spirit possesses him

Mismagius - the spirit of Raphael's mother; has unusual coloring: red accents and gray eyes

Polteageist (Antique Form) - represent his love of tea

Cofagrigus - Dark Mage that killed his mother reborn as this Pokémon

I prefer writing long fics with several chapters... but I like both. What I end up writing depends on how much headspace I have at the moment 😅

Long fics give you more freedom to explore several dynamics and to worldbuild more— it's a deep dive. Short fics let you brush over details and write only what you want to write, without stressing over how to incorporate it into a plot.

🍑 If you could make a connection between your favorite character and another work you care about (whether a crossover/fusion or a wonderfully “pretentious” literary reference) what would it be? How would it work?

I have trouble imagining crossovers if I'm honest? To me, characters are products of their world and how they were brought up, so crossovers are hard for me to write. Even just modern AUs are harder for me to work with compared to canon divergence or simply adding one element to the existing world (like with Soulmate AUs). I just need my pieces of media to remain separate entities fhjkdkshj.

Now to make a wonderfully pretentious literary reference (I spent 3 years in literary preparatory class— there's nothing more pretentious than that)... I have compared Nozel to Bérénice's Titus in some author note (prolly my favorite play of all time— it has some of the most wonderful lines ever written and I could talk about that play at lengths. love it so much). The overall plot seems fitting too, at least when writing Nozel in any kind of romantic plot.

Not necessarily a scene, but I always find myself writing about siblings, especially if they have a difficult/unusual relationship.
