I NEED HORSEY UPDATE OLIVE

Hehehe I mean spotty u got the doc already but I have more thoughts on it.

So the creatures follow a general story of how life was made and set on their world in that a long long time ago comets crashed down and distributed the first sprouts of life. The craters are still on the land and held sacred by all. But after the plants started thriving and growing the last comet fell which held the animals, specifically magic animals like the Equestrians, Kelpies, Silkies, and Lycans.

This is where the Folik and Fearn started.

Folik are strict herbivores and consist of Equus, Equestrians, and Silkies

Fearn eat meat and mostly known as Kelpies, Manticores, and Lycans

While not named Griffons eat both though over time have become more and more herbivores

It was simple as the populations kept growing. But the Equestrians grew much faster slowly taking over more and more. Their magic a particular power to them. Before now the Equus class wasn’t a thing there were just the horned horses that all had some form of magic.

That was until Queen Rayet. She was the powerful sun queen of the Equestrians that in a show of her strength took over the whole midlands of the world. Destroying its residents if they didn’t bow to her. While the Equus class says she was just protecting everyone the other side is the horror she caused. And here is where the biggest story comes from. The birth of the Equus.

On one hoof the higher hooves say that Queen Rayet was faced by her sister who wanted the power for herself. So they fought and when defeated the scorned princess used all of her magic to cut the magic from everyone who followed her victorious sister. But before she lost her horn Queen Rayet destroyed her sister killing them both with the beam

But this isn’t necessarily the truth and behind closed doors more often told in a different way. Queen Rayet was overusing her power and using her title of queen to control all creatures under the sun’s flaming gaze. Her sister couldn’t stand for this, attacking her to stop her destructive path. Even though Rayet was weaker she was still an incredibly powerful equestrian and defeated her sister who was barely above average in magic. The princess couldn’t let it go on any further and with her whole soul cursed the horned horses that followed her sister to lose their magic and horns creating the hornless horses known as Equus. In rage at what happened Rayet attempted to use a new form of magic but instead of it working it turned against her and burned her from the inside out.

Even in both stories the ending is the Equus being magic-less equestrians. But they still controlled all the land and kept it. Developing non magic weapons. They still had some access it was just less and harder to find as the equestrians who didn’t follow or weren’t around when the spell was cast kept their magic and horns.

Seeing the growing power the Silkies joined the Equus kingdom using their threads for many things as well as just being stronger in general.

While the griffons didn’t meld into the Kingdom of Cassyrris (Equus + Silkies under Equus Rule) they did ally beside them in fear of being taken over next. The manticore king Obsidian taking a pledge to the newly risen Queen Capricorn saying their kingdoms would help and supply each other.

The only other forces against the kingdom now was the Kelpies and Lycans.

But when the kelpies disappeared one foggy month the Lycans submitted. While not pledged to them the Lycans have decreased in size significantly and have harder times ahead as the Equus class looks down on their work as herders, butchers, and animal product suppliers.

A species of blep from cold steppes. Like most species of furred tetrapods, it keeps its young in a pouch for months until they are hardy enough to run about and eat solid food. It eats lichens, roots and mosses primarily, but is an opportunistic scavenger if those prove scarce. It lives in groups of variable sizes, with complex familial dynamics, but these groups can be spread out over great distances; they communicate by loud bellows that cover long distances despite great winds.

The frogs have their own gods too they say. Who look like frogs. And have aspects and values that the frogs care for, there are gods of flies, and gods of ponds, and gods of eggs.

And the cats have their gods too, gods of stalking, and gods of sleep, and gods of yarn and string. And even the smallest bugs have their own gods, gods of death that look like hands and feet, and gods of comfort that look the crumbs and dew drops.

When the beasts of the earth pray we do not see it, and do not know it, for their gods are not our own. And we so rarely notice them, because we so rarely notice that which is not relevant to humans goals.

Though if you find yourself at the mercy of a god for beasts, be warned for they will not be appeased by human means. And the god of wolves would destroy a human to save a wolf as quickly and calmly as one of our gods would kill a human to spare their follower.

Creature Fantasy Writing Tips #1 Sentient and Sapient are Different Words (and You Probably Mean Sapient).

There aren't a lot of resources devoted to writing creature fantasy, animal fiction, xenofiction, or similar human-free works, and I thought I'd help out a little by offering a few tips. My goal here isn't to judge or tell you that you're doing it wrong, but instead, I'd like to help you avoid a few pitfalls or give you more options as a writer. I'm also writing these after my brain is fried from getting my novel work done for the day, so hopefully this'll be coherent and fairly typo-free. With that in mind, here's your first tip. Sentience implies an awareness of self as an organism, while sapience implies wisdom, creativity, and near-ish human levels of intelligence. I think what throws people here is all those scifi documentaries about the "search for sentient life" in the cosmos. That phrase doesn't mean they're searching for little grey men with UFOs, it means they're searching for life larger than single-celled organisms.

If you sit outside reading this, turn around, and see that a squirrel has stolen your lunch, it is accurate for you to say "my sandwich was stolen by sentient squirrels." But if the squirrel shouts insults at you, came up with an elaborate plan to steal your sandwich, and this is part of the squirrel's four-year-plan to control sandwiches in your city, the squirrel is sapient. (It's also sentient, but since all squirrels as we know them are sentient, it'd be redundant to mention that.)

"So how far down do you have to go before life stops being sentient?" I've seen studies on sentience in beetles, so I'd assume below insects.

"Wait, but then.... where is the line between sentience and sapience?" This is a little tougher. Are crows, dolphins, gorillas, or whales sapient? It's a topic for debate, and rather than give you an answer, you can use those as an example of what the line looks like in your own writing.

This distinction can feel a bit pedantic, especially when your favorite scifi and fantasy writers are probably getting it wrong all the time. The thing about creature fantasy fans, though, is that they're here for sapient non-human protagonists, and they know the distinction. You will get angry letters if you mix these up.

That said... if you are writing sentient xenofiction, that's okay! Your audience may be smaller, but a book like Raptor Red by Dr. Robert T. Bakker was immensely popular and influential despite having just a normal Utahraptor as the protagonist. Depending on how you write them, you may get some claims that you're anthropomorphizing your characters. Maybe you want that, maybe you don't. That's entirely up to you. We'll talk about anthropomorphism and disanthropomorphism later on.

That's it for tip #1 =] Just a simple pitfall that writers find themselves in. I apologize ahead of time as you're going to see a lot of non-creature scifi/fantasy fans and authors say sentient when they mean sapient, and it's going to start to irk you as you fix it in your own writing. Just remember to be kind =] Unless you're in a situation where the difference matters, it's probably best to let it slide if someone uses sentience where they mean sapience. These drawings are a bit older, they were drawn in late 2023, but I've decided to post them for Mermay since all three are hippocamps! All three of these mares are the Grandmothers, aka monarchs, of their respective kingdoms. Both Orca and Lilypad also rule alongside a co-monarch, but I haven't drawn either of them yet.

Piranha is the fierce and ambitious Grandmother of Morrissey. She craved the throne from a young age, but unfortunately with the way that succession works; all of her aunts would have gotten the crown before it passed to her after all of their deaths. So. . . they needed a bit of "help" to meet their ultimate fate. Her sisters also needed "help," Piranha doesn't like sharing. Due to all of this. . . potential murder, she only believes that there should be a specific number of heirs and no more. Hence two of her daughters' deaths after the birth of a few granddaughters.

Orca is the cold and reserved Grandmother of Aerwyna. Though she was quite different in her youth, a major succession crisis and the loss of 16 foals has made Orca into the mare she is today. The crisis is still ongoing, with her only heir being her sister Dolphin who has also suffered numerous foal losses, leaving no one else after her to inherit the throne. While there is still a chance that the two sisters will have an heir one day. . . they are also both getting up there in age and each pregnancy becomes a greater risk than the last.

Lilypad is the kind young Grandmother of Nimue. Unfortunately for her, there has been a murder mystery happening with the mares of Nimue's Mangrove Dynasty. Currently only her and her niece, Seagrass, are the only documented female members left of the dynasty. Although they aren't direct female descendants, there had been so much chaos that when Seagrass was born and Lilypad had come out; they were happily accepted into the line of succession. Though. . . they still never figured out the murderer.

When I began researching for the ecology in which to base my setting, I found that the landscape of Bulgaria worked perfectly, and as I dove deeper into my research I fell in love with the language and culture, and knew that I wanted to incorporate both into my setting. 

I am looking for someone fluent in Bulgarian who can help me navigate and utilize the nuances of the language. I am specifically aiming to name characters and locations and have them sound authentically Bulgarian. I also intend to learn Bulgarian, separately from this, so that I can eventually do my own translations! In the Rain Ravine towns, it's very common, particularly for Karktosu, to wear fancy mane covers, made of thin ropes woven into pretty shapes, with glass pieces beaded throughout. They serve to hold down the mane of those who let it grow long, and can also generally be a fashion statement. It's not uncommon for them the be passed down through a family and modified many times by the wearer to change or add patterns. In areas closer to the sea, they may be worn with a cloth that completely covers the mane underneath, protecting it from damage from salty air while out and about.

These are the Heads - the mostly spiritual leader of the central Foru micro-state collective. Their role is to be a guide for all the leaders (archs) in central Foru and speak for all of them on an international level. They also bless lands and people and generally are well-liked by them. They can make big decisions, but it's ultimately on the archs if they comply (but the pressure is strong).

Every head has a more specialized role, each representing a 'sense' of their one shared soul (hearing, seeing, touch, thought...) and people they are patrons to (the old, the "rich", the leaders, the priests...). Each central Foru micro-state usually has its favorite head that they want to see the most in their community when bringing them news or blessings.

The Heads are the center of a religion practiced in the region. In short - the Heads share one spirit that in ancient times belonged to a priest who misused their power to get to the spirit world and instead became forever stuck in the material world. After many reincarnations, the priest became a wise leader who learned to speak with the spirit world and make final peace between the worlds of spirits and the material.

I would need to go into more religion details to go over that but that can be a separate post. Let's talk about how they get their role.

A 'competition' is held to determine the best leader, most spiritually attuned, most well-thinking, and best-presenting individual. The Heads in position at the time with a few other high-ranking individuals will judge the participants and then make their pick at the choosing ceremony. Luckily there are not too many to choose from, there are many requirements to participate.

However, the one picked isn't one that will become a head, they would be far too old at the time. Instead, they will force their system to make a rare phenomenon happen. This means making more of themselves with cloning (having babies grow out of diploid cells with no need for another person). This is usually achieved when under high amounts of stress and loneliness.

The uniima egg naturally holds 4 larvae but usually only 1-2 develop fully while the rest becomes food for the surviving ones. This clone egg has 4 identical whites (pre-babies) in them that get special care to ensure at least 3 survive. There have been heads with one member before and with 2 and 3, but 4 is a miracle as the bottom corner larva almost never develops enough to hatch. This egg is very lucky.

The identical quadruplets are given to be raised in different environments. These environments will decide what they represent as adults. It will also give them better perspectives of the world, making it easier/more difficult to make big decisions when the time comes.

Additionally, because there are 4 heads this time, a new environment had to be introduced. This environment was that of small communities, minorities, and generally people living in poorer conditions (yes, for the past Heads, war was more important than their people suffering (it's a very central Foru thing)). Unfortunately for The Ear, they are not respected everywhere, and many people assume them to be a fake among their siblings.

You can also see the heads have each their own signature and each Head generation has their own symbol that is recognized outside their writing systems.
