Hi dear librarian! 1/? I was wondering if there's a term to describe a phenomenon that plagues so many films nowadays and partially responsible for the downfall of BBC Sherlock and MCU: it appears that the creators/screenwriters are afraid of or uncomfortable dealing with strong negative emotions. It's very obvious in Sherlock S3,S4, and MCU after Infinity War. They immediately interrupt an emotional scene with a quip, joke, or a solution. It really disturbs the plot flow, emotional buildup,
2/? and the tension of the show. E.g., in Sherlock S3E1 the reunion scene and the underground scene, in S4 the ghost Mary non-stop quips before the emotional hug. In S2, they really shouldn't have revealed Irene or Sherlock survived immediately after the event. I don't know what the writers were afraid of. Without a proper buildup, the resolution doesn't feel satisfactory. I'm very happy that in GOTG 3 they avoided this problem and it's probably the only MCU film worth seeing recently. 3/3 Another example is the Thor series. I know Thor 1 has many plot flaws, but they got the aesthetics right and with a Prometheus type of self-sacrifice, it feels like a proper fusion of technology and mythology. But later they wrote Thor as a laughing stock for his depression and in his own 3rd and 4th film, every remotely serious emotional scene was undermined by something. Just why?! That's part of the reason people say MCU doesn't feel relatable anymore. Thx for reading and stay cool!
Hey Nonny *HUGS*
Thank you for this insightful ask, and my answer is essentially this: shareholders and studio meddling, and probably bad writing by people who think they know better. A lot of the MCU, for instance, is SO boring and repetitive right now because they're too afraid, it seems, to stray from "what is safe", stuff that won't have people bitching at them, or they're trying too hard to recapture what made the Infinity Saga so amazing. They spent TOO long being praised and in turn stopped trying so hard, and under Chapek, dude was a greedy bastard who worked Feige to stress. I'm glad that they pulled back, it seems, and I hope it stays that way, hopefully so they can make new movies up to the quality of GOTG 3 again. Studios like Dreamworks and Indie studios are taking risks, and it's paying off, because people are bored with the sanitization of Disney and Marvel. Everything has to have no true villain in Disney.
That's not to say I don't still enjoy Disney, I do, but Marvel as-of-late has put out more flops than fantastics. And I suspect some of it is studio and shareholder meddling. It's a miracle Gunn got to do what he wanted for GOTG3, and I'm glad he did. With Thor 3 I feel like Taika got raked over the coals because he had to follow whatever plan they wanted for his vision. I dunno. Marvel for me is so hit-and-miss these days.
As for Sherlock... I think part of it was BBC meddling and another was ego-tripping, because Mofftiss continually put out winner after winner of seasons, so they thought, because just the TWO of them got an Emmy for TAB, well, they're good enough to get it for a WHOLE SEASON! (which, for the record on my opinion, I think Mofftiss are better at ONE SHOT episodes, not an entire series on their own... they run out of ideas and then throw whatever their weird fanboy fantasies want, and without a third writer to reign them in, we get S4). So yeah, that's what I mean by bad writing as well. I BELIEVE Moffat or his wife owns Pinewood Studios that they film in, so like... it's literal studio meddling, LOL. But yeah sometimes a writer or director can also be too big in their britches, and whatever they say, goes.
So yeah, I dunno. It's honestly a mix of everything and fatigue with the unoriginality of content these days. I think that's why I don't really watch anything anymore unless a trailer REALLY grips me, or it's recommended to me by a Lovely. I stick mostly to old-faves because I know I won't be disappointed, or fandom-related content.
What do y'all think?

I finally watched The Thing (1982) with Trevor tonight and honestly?? It's such a good movie, I don't think I'm over it. Also it's a little under 110 minutes, which is probably the best part.

Black Adam talk dump
The last time a DC film made me this emotional over its cinematography was Wonder Woman (like that entire history scene in the beginning, whoosh my art brain was happy). So I was super stoked that Black Adam evoked the same feelings again and I just love, love that DC’s art team keep doing throwbacks to classical paintings in their storyboards and colour keys. Thor: Ragnarok managed to achieve the same effect (a friend who worked on the production confirmed that was the intention) and I think its a really great way especially with superhero films pertaining to godlike heroes to create an epic atmosphere.
The soundtrack helped too, I thought especially with the techno tracks it might have been by Junkie XL but Lorne Balfe is a favourite too so my auditory senses were also very well fed. There are things I could say about the writing and hearing that it was rewritten multiple times kind of summed up everything that is wrong about the script.
However I have to give kudos to whoever did the final edit for release because they actually managed something rather coherent out of a film that very obviously felt like it had multiple voices directing it. Especially with the show and tell aspect, I read somewhere that one of the trailers contained a spoiler because back when that trailer was released that version of the film didn’t view that scene as a spoiler. So the fact that they still manage to pull off that twist despite the mess caused by higher ups was very impressive of the editing team.
Spoilers of more things I want to talk about:
Wow finding out that the statue of the champion was actually Hurut was heartbreaking especially since it was destroyed near the end of the movie; the statue had to be the only realistic image Teth-Adam had of his son since there don’t seem to be any other depictions of him from back then.
I think one of the cities was named after his wife? Again another ouch now that he had to live in the modern world without her while seeing the name everyday.
There is something to be said about a world where gods walk among mortals and how faith can be both figurative and real- I love the way that question was interposed in the scene where Teth-Adam was floating seemingly drowned and Amon calling for him because you can view it as either the power of faith of the Khandaqi people woke him up or he woke himself up with his own power and the faith was just symbolic. Other people might interpret that differently but I view it as rather ambiguous because I preferred it that way.
It’s quite obvious I’ve never read the comics and knew nothing of Black Adam beyond reading his wiki but I do enjoy how the writers changed his story in this film to be a critique of neocolonialism especially in context of the superhero genre. There is a lot I can talk about this topic and while I think the dialogue in regards to that is rather clunky it can’t be helped especially since a more nuance take on the topic might go over people’s heads.
The hint that Black Adam might be the villain in the next DC film also made this commentary really interesting, because I’ll be honest throughout the film I find it very hard to sympathise with the Justice Society. Given the clunky script I’m not sure if this was intentional even if it felt like it is for narrative purposes, because I know from a genre convention perspective we’re not supposed to view superheroes as an imposition of western authority but this film seem to be pushing that boundary for story purposes. Therefore it’ll be really interesting to see how DC will handle Black Adam’s character in future films especially if he’s hinted to be the antagonist against Superman. I’m aware of the shift in his character from villain to antihero in modern comics, but from what I read its more of a “this guy will punch Superman for plot purposes but will join forces with him to prevent the destruction of the world”, and less of “this guy will punch Superman to prevent him from carrying out western political agenda in this fictional Middle-east coded country”. So while the political commentary in Black Adam was an interesting direction for a superhero film to take (though I’m sure not unique) I do wonder how far it can be taken in context of the greater Hollywood climate for future films. (This is where fanfics can come into play but I’m sad that there are maybe only 9 fics on ao3 and none of them feature Black Adam ;u;)

Holy smokes, the horror elements in Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3 were all over the damn place, and for the story they were telling, damn appropriate.
James Gunn just kind of decided to push the envelope at Marvel one last time on the way out the door to the Distinguished Competition huh?

how many asks do you have rn and do you plan on answering them eventually?
i can't tell exactly right now because i'm not on desktop, but last time i checked (last week?) it was over 1800 (this ignoring my DMs because i get woefully behind on those and have had a lot lately 😳), and i can tell you for sure there are still messages in there from at least last year (from friends even, not just anons!) that i never got around to despite intending to/really wanting to answer them, and multiple varying topics that rattle around my head like the ball in an empty spray paint can, so while i'd love to say yes, i know many of them are lost to eternity with replies only in my mind, like phantoms of the askbox

Nanostructured ceramic coatings do not fatigue, finds study
Extremely thin ceramic coatings can completely change the properties of technical components. Coatings are used, for example, to increase the resistance of metals to heat or corrosion. Coating processes play a role for large turbine blades as well as for extremely stressed tools in production technology.
TU Wien (Vienna) has now investigated what determines the stability of such coatings. And the results, some of which were obtained at the DESY synchrotron in Hamburg, are quite surprising: the ceramic layers break down in a completely different way than metals. Material fatigue hardly plays a role; the decisive factor is the intensity of extreme load peaks (the so called stress intensity factor). This finding will change the method used to measure and further improve the resistance of thin films in the future.
The study is published in Acta Materialia.

The full documentary is now available to watch for free on YouTube. Please consider watching. People need to know the truth of this illness so that we can get the funding we need and deserve. This is another example of an illness that affects mostly women and is treated horrifically by the medical system.

Just got three more job apps out and on a list for employers to reach out to me if they think I'd be a good fit! (It had a lil essay spot to tell what u can do, what u like to do for work, etc and I think I did well in that spot!)
Got some filming done earlier so now all i need to do is edit that, post it, get the vacuuming done, do some Prolific, and figure out something for Housemate's bday bc Bday is coming up! (which is all I'm saying cuz i know ae will see this post. Not a huge surprise or anything but just A Little Something bc i want to 🫂)
I know im probably gonna drop tomorrow and get nothing done, but for today. For today, I am vaguely productive 🙌!
