I guess it’s my turn to make a post regarding Maddie’s and their apology post, if THAT’S what you really want to call it. Shortened version of the long and incredibly gaslighting post, they explain that their mental health was the reason why they acted how they did and cast themselves as a victim without actually taking accountability for what they did.

Plenty of us on here, in the oc community, have bad days and horrible mental health issues, but you never see us give into those urges and weaponize it against people. Especially ones who have their own problems and are forced to drop them in the sakes for Maddie.

A majority of us who’ve been friends of theirs are getting angry and upset all over again, and it’s because we have accepted what happened and moved on together as a family. But now? We get this half-assed excuse for all the hurt Maddie had caused us with incoherent thoughts and we weren't given individual apologies for other things that they have done. It was solely based on OC Theft, Gatekeeping OC Ideas, and pretending to be two different people on Tumblr to receive gifts in giveaways or exchanges.

However this is what their post had forgotten to mention: (+sensitive topics & receipts)

Expressing how they wanted to S*lf H*rm themselves on a daily and constant basis in the Discord because they had a terrible day at work which made many of us stay up late, trying to help them only for them to vanish halfway through conversation and pop up the next day in the server to act as if nothing ever happened

In regards to the previous point, Maddie constantly made us in the Discord group responsible for their mental health by telling us that we were the only ones that were grounding them from h*rting themselves and had us constantly checking up on them to make sure they were okay.

Created a divide among the users in my own Discord Server and tried to make it their own.

On top of that they chose who they wanted to associate with and once that was settled, it was as if you weren’t able to speak with anyone else in the group. (Five other members, not including me, felt this way as well as we spoke after the incident)

Members in the server felt uncomfortable that they couldn’t express themselves in fear that Maddie would be angry with them! (p1) (p2)

Maddie never gave credit to edit(s) that were based off or inspired by others, and once you tried to ask them to tag the creator of the original post, their excuse was always, “Oh, I was already working on this type of edit, it’s just been in my drafts for a long time and just now got around to posting it.”

According to several users, myself included, we had bad experiences with Maddie that in normal conversation, they could always speak about things they disliked that we loved but the moment that we spoke about something we disliked that they loved, they’d shut down the friendliness and become passive aggressive.

Maddie would toss traumatic events into character backstories without giving it the level of consideration that it really needed. Not handling it properly nor respectively, just using them as fodder just to make a character seem tragic. Which is really gross for people who actually have dealt with such things.

Piggybacking off that ^, all of their age-gaped oc ships that they’ve created for no reason other than to make others uncomfortable and to ‘express” their own trauma.

They had over 10 (TEN) ships with age gaps, and the one that felt the most predatory was their 13 year old GOT OC (FC: Mackenzie Foy) and Robb Stark (Richard Madden). They literally used Mackenzie content from when she was only 17 when when Richard was 27.

They would also tell everyone to tag triggering themes for their tumblr posts so they could be filtered out for them but almost never tagged their own posts that held such themes. Hypocrisy at it’s finest, kids!

That inconsiderate and disgusting remark that they made about my late friend and oc creator Lizzie. Something I’ll never forgive Maddie for, but still deserve an actual apology for because shit that was NOT okay! (If you need a reminder, here)

There was much more but those are the main things that should’ve been discussed in that post. As I said many of us who had been friends of Maddie’s, actually no—Not even friends. Friends wouldn’t do that. We were mascots; the cheerleaders. We became their outlet and sole dependency on happiness, amusement, friendship, acceptance, and dare I say, likeability.

We were manipulated, gaslighted, guilt-tripped, and gatekept all for their benefit. Period.

Reader, if you happen to share this post with Maddie, be my guest! Or want to be a hateful anon and send me hateful messages, fire away! Your damage won’t measure up to what Maddie had caused me and my friends for years.

Maddie’s apology wasn’t an apology, it was just a massive text to say “Hey, this happened” and ended with “I can’t undo what has been done because I was in a bad place”.

Hi! While not new to tumblr it’s been quite a while and oh boy, I wasn’t expecting some of the drama that’s been happening all because of people moving from twitter to tumblr. Though I am a jc/xicheng main myself, I’m sorry y’all are having to deal with this.

Personally, I understand not feeling how fanon can change a character. I’ve felt this way about lwj sometimes (some ppl make him care too much about jc that it feels ooc) so I often avoid certain things and that even includes some themes of xicheng that makes wangxian completely different). Ah, I’m saying that gibberish to mean that I can relate to the frustration even if it’s not the same—

You should be allowed to vent and talk about it. You guys created a tag specific to that too and you guys don’t bother other tags either. I don’t see what the issue is personally with that.

Also, just bc I’ve seen this accusation a bit, I don’t think it’s the JC Stans who’ve been on tumblr for quite a while causing the drama so much as it’s those moving from twitter. Even some tumblr Jc fans have said themselves [paraphrased] “they created that tag quite a while ago. Best to just mute the tag and let them be.” Honestly, I didn’t even know that tag existed until people started pointing it out. If you’re in the general Jc tag, you don’t see the canon Jc tag stuff anyway.

I say the best thing is to just ignore them and keep posting meta/analysis there as you guys have been. I’ve seen fandom discourse get bad enough (*cough* FE3H fandom *cough*) that you just learn to ignore, block, and keep doing the norm. They’ll leave you alone when they see they can’t move you. And if they’ve blocked you, they’re only doing it to themselves.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I think we can definitely agree on just not vibing with certain types of fanon even if we aren’t bothered by it existing as long as we can still play our own way. I have no beef with Xicheng fans at all, it’s just not my thing (and I totally get you on the LWJ bit of it too).

I really don’t know why it’s suddenly such an issue now too! We had like eight months of total peace about the tag! It made sense for those of us here and allowed us to stop feuding and I was happy with that. It’s nice to just have an easy shorthand where both sides can filter out the one they don’t want and go from there.

Yeah I agree that it’s the Twitter fans. I’ve had a couple of people say that the tag has been overrun by antis and that’s what gets me there, cause I was one of the first to start using it at all, so can a tag really be overrun if that’s how it was always used? It wasn’t like we stole it or anything, I don’t think it existed outside of a few quieter blogs before my friends and I got in on the whole thing. I’m glad to hear that tumblr JC fans are also being reasonable about the whole thing.

<3 thank you Anon for the suggestion. I shall do my best to not start up new fights, but honestly I do tend to bite back when people bring the fight to my posts and inbox. But I shall continue to tag accordingly and hopefully all shall die down soon and we can return to our relative harmony.

Once Bitten, Twice Stupid prt.25

Keith was impressed. He was impressed by Lance’s work ethic. Since damn near throwing his laptop in Lance’s lap, the vampire had been typing and clicking away, distracting Keith from the videos he was supposed to be watching. His heart wasn’t in it. Pidge and Hunk might be a step above normal paranormal investigators, but they were still so clueless of the world around them. Peering over to look at Lance’s screen, Keith quirked an eyebrow. His feelings of being impressed changing as he barely stifled a laugh as he found Lance wasn’t working on ghost hunting, instead in the bottom of the left hand corner of the screen was a video of cat compilations playing as the vampire checked his emails. Pidge was going to be super cranky when she found out. Her wrath was nothing to laugh at, finding it somewhat annoying she’d declared herself boss of their weird club thing. Her passion couldn’t be faltered. She’d already seemed to have sussed out what she wanted to investigate next, which was one of the local pubs where guests had stated they’d seen ghostly apparitions and heard crying only to find no body there. Personally he thought the cries were probably from other guests having sex. He’d made that mistake before, before he knew what Adam was to Shiro. Having woken in the middle of the night to someone “whimpering” “oh, Jesus” repeatedly, he’d crept from his bedroom, barely three steps into the hall before he realised it was Shiro, and that the pair of them had left the door opened while they boned. He’d bolted back into his room, thrown himself down on his bed, then buried himself under his blankets as he tried not to hear what was happening between his brother and his boyfriend. The following day Shiro had walked with a limp, Keith feeling highly uncomfortable as he knew what’d happen. The following week when Adam had come down with hip pain, and Shiro was fussing over him ridiculously, Keith had invested in a new set of noise cancelling headphones. There were just some things about his brother that he didn’t need to know, ever.

Keith wasn’t aware that Lance noticed he was watching. Closing his email, the vampire opened up a blank word document. Thinking he was about to draft a letter, Keith had almost turned away when Lance started typing

“Don’t tell Pidge. She’ll shoot me”

Keith couldn’t help the almost giggle light laughter he barked out. Lance sighing at him, as Pidge dug into his side with her elbow

“Something you want to share?”

“No. No, Lance just clicked on a dodgy link and I was laughing at his stupidity”

Lance typed

“Thanks for nothing”

As Pidge sighed deeply, as Keith bit down his laughter. It wasn’t his fault Lance had been sprung doing the wrong thing

“Can’t you take this seriously?”

Lance raised his head to look to Pidge

“I didn’t mean to. I don’t know why Keith’s even laughing”

“Because you’re an idiot?”

“Thanks, Pidge. If you’re so smart, what did you find”

“I never thought you’d ask. Okay, guys. I’ve got a plan for this weekend”

Hunk and Lance both groaned simultaneously. Shay laughing at the pair of them

“I think your assistants are too keen on your plan”

“They never are, but if it’s the five of us, we should be fine. Keith can man the camera, while we explore”

Keith’s internal humour dried right up. He wasn’t supposed to be being involved

“Why me?”

“Because you’re the photographer of the group. Now, guess what I found, guys!”

Pidge was way too into this. When no one replied, she cast something to the screen before getting up and walking over to the TV

“What’s that?”

Hunk already looked panicked at the thought of whatever it was on the screen behind Pidge, his tone just a pinched

“I found an old map of Garrison, it’d been miscategorized...”

“You mean you were snooping where you weren’t supposed to and found an old map that wasn’t supposed to be found, don’t you?”

Pidge shot Lance fingerguns

“Got it in one. You know how we guys knew about the tunnels under the town, and the old mine shaft from when Garrison was first founded? Well, I find it! The mine, I mean. They repurposed the mine into a temporary base in case they needed to retreat, but I bet you’ll never guess where the entrance is...”

Pidge drew herself up for the big reveal, Lance spoiled it

“It’s under the pub”

“... In... dammit, dude. I was going to say that”

“You snooze, you lose”

“You’re a douche”

“Rude. I thought we talked about this before”

“Yeah, but like... I’ve found the other entrance. It’s next to the cemetery”

Pidge perked back up, Keith had a bad feeling. Messing around in, and around, a cemetery wasn’t a thing. It wasn’t respectful. Those people who’d been buried there deserved to rest in peace

“Pidge, I don’t think we should be messing around near the cemetery”

Keith nodded his agreement with Hunk, Shay also looking uncomfortable

“It’s near, not in. Look, here, see this bit here, that’s where the gates are now. But you keep going a for maybe 150metres past that, down the slope bit and you come to where the entrance should be. It’s probably barricaded up, or even like buried, but we can still suss it out. No one’s been down there in like a hundred years, can you imagine what’s down there?”

“Pidge. This is really bad idea”

“But don’t you guys want to find the entrance?”

Hunk shook his head

“No”

“But...”

“It could really dangerous down there”

“We’re only going to have a look”

Lance sighed at Pidge

“We never just have a look. I’m with Hunk, I don’t mind if you can get access through the pub, but going out to find the entrance to a mine system that’s probably no longer stable isn’t a good idea. There could be a rock fall, or worse”

Pidge deflated

“So you’ll only go in through the pub”

“Yeah. Sorry, Pidge. I know you’re really keen on it, but it just isn’t safe”

Keith agreed completely with Lance... except about entering through the pub. Some things were best left alone

“Fine. I’ll go see them again... you guys are so lame”

“We’re only lame because we don’t want to see you hurt”

“Whatever. Why can’t you guys be on my side”

“It’s not about not being on side, it’s about safety. That mine has been closed up. There could be mould, or worse down there. You could get seriously sick, provided you don’t get hurt first. If anything happened to you, it’d break me to pieces”

“Okay. I get it. Fine. Whatever. Hunk, start packing up”

“But I...”

“You’re my lift. Right now I want to go home”

“Pidge...”

“I get it. Okay. You don’t want me hurt, but I’m not a baby. I’m also not a total buzzkill like you are. You always think you know what’s best, Lance. You don’t”

That wasn’t fair on Lance. Lance insisting on talking things out

“I love you, you idiot. You’re not listening to me and I don’t want your life in danger”

“I can take care of myself”

“I know you can”

Pidge brushed Lance off. Keith feeling like she was acting like a baby by having a temper tantrum over not getting her own way. Lance was genuinely concerned for her, his points valid

“Hunk, start moving”

Keith felt awkward as he said goodbye to Hunk, Shay, and Pidge. He’d walked them to the door, Hunk assuring him she’d come round and see sense once she calmed down. Keith wasn’t so sure. Wandering back into the living room, Lance had thrown his laptop to the other side of the couch, had his glasses off and his hands covering his face as he leaned back to rest the back of his head on the cushion behind him

“That went well”

“Yep”

“Are you okay?”

“Yep”

“Is Pidge going to be okay?”

“Nope. Now we have to go out tonight. I don’t wanna go out tonight”

Walking over to the couch, Keith dropped himself down beside Lance, poking him in the leg

“What do you mean, we have to go out?”

“Because I’ve known Pidge long enough to know she’s gonna wanna go snoop at the entrance”

Keith had suspected. Pidge had given up too easily

“She doesn’t listen when she gets fixated, does she?”

“Nope”

“And you have to go make sure it’s safe first?”

“Yep. Not the first time either. She found a club once in Platt, so I checked it out. Pretty much dealer central. Anything you wanted. Pretended my drink was spiked the next day. Let’s say we didn’t ever go to that club as a group”

“She’s lucky to have you”

“Yeah. It’s not just a me thing right. You wouldn’t want your little sister playing in an abandoned mine, would you?”

Lance moved his left hand up as he looked at Keith. Keith feeling himself nod, as Lance didn’t look as okay with things as he was pretending

“No. Hell, I wouldn’t even want Shiro poking around in there”

“Okay. I don’t know if it’s me overreacting, or if I’m being stupid”

“Neither. So why do we have to go?”

“I’m going, and you’re going because I figured you’d want me to not get myself killed on your watch”

“Is it likely?”

“Who knows. You stay in the car. I don’t want you hurt either”

Keith scoffed. Whatever Lance could handle, so could he. He wasn’t scared of deep dank tunnels and potentially being buried alive

“I’m a hunter”

“You’re a human. I’m going to grab something to eat. We might as well head off now, I can point the pub out on the way there”

Keith wrinkled his nose. He honestly wanted to veg out on the couch and recover from too much human interaction

“The sun’s still up”

“So?”

“People could see what we’re up to”

Lance sighed at him, letting himself slide sideways so he was leaning against Keith with his head on his shoulder. Keith’s heart did a weird beat, the closeness weirdly intimate... What was he supposed to do? Shiro normally hugged him or ruffled his hair if Keith sat against him the way Lance was right now

“Um, Lance?”

Lance made a show of groaning and stretching as he sat back up. What the hell was that? Why was Lance touching him? Now his arm felt funny...

“You’re right. We’ll wait. Dinner first, then near death adventure. Whooo hooo”

“I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not”

“Sarcasm is wasted on you”

“No it’s not, you’re weird”

Lance patted his leg, before shuffling forward on the couch

“I’ll grab a bag and meet you in the kitchen”

Great. Just great. Keith really didn’t want to be going on an adventure, but Lance had made his mind up and Coran had told him to look after Lance... which meant he had no choice but to do what Lance wanted.

With the sun still in the process of setting, Lance turned tour guide, describing the “pros and cons” of each business as he drove down the Main Street. Keith didn’t particularly care. He was more worried about being pulled over by the police with rope, two flashlights, and a shovel in the back. Lance didn’t seem to care, or maybe he did care and was talking about everything in an attempt to avoid the real issue of them about to do something very stupid.

Turning off the main road, the road to the cemetery was gravel. Old weeping willows marked the side every few dozen metres, giving it a weird feel when compared to the rest of Garrison. It was almost pretty. Cows gazed in a couple of the paddocks they passed, some kind of crop in others. He’d brought his camera because Lance had told him to, and now he really wanted to capture the view

“Want me to pull over?”

Lance was already slowing down as he guided his bronco to the gravel shoulder of the road. It wasn’t much, barely distinguishable from the road with the exception of weeds

“Huh? What are you doing?”

“You said you wanted to take a photo”

He had?

“No I didn’t”

“Yes, you did. You clearly said “I should take a photo”

Keith didn’t remember saying it... Maybe he had? Shiro’d teased him for it before

“I was thinking it...”

“And saying your thoughts out loud, apparently. If you wanna take photos, go for it. I’ll wait”

“Are you sure?”

Lance cut the engine

“Dude, don’t make this weird. Go take photos of the sunset”

Keith felt a tad foolish as he climbed out the car. Lance had told him to go for it, and now that he was, he kind of felt like he was keeping him waiting

“Are you sure you don’t mind?”

“Nope. I gave you a camera so you’d have something of your own to do. You like photography, so go crazy. It’s not like the mine entrance is going to pack up and leave town while I’m parked here”

Keith still felt weird about it, but Lance had said it was okay, so it must be.

Practicing with his camera was fun, Keith took as many photos as he could knowing he’d cull the ones that weren’t up to his standard later. There was something about taking a photo. About capturing that moment, because no two moments were ever the same. He’d never be standing out on this road again, at the exact same time, capturing the exact same things again. There was something beautiful in it... not that he’d describe it like that to anyone. He still got embarrassed when Shiro would make a big deal out of some great photo he took. Secretly he was pleased, but he didn’t want to let that show. He wanted to keep the feelings that went with the image to himself. It wasn’t like he was a professional, he was just a guy with a nice camera and a nice view. That was it.

As the sun dipped lower in the horizon, Keith climbed back into the bronco

“Good to go?”

“Yep”

“Cool. It’s not that much further until we reach the entrance”

Lance wasn’t going to ask to see the photos? Something about Lance not asking disappointed him. Not that he wanted to share, but now he kind of felt like he had inconvenienced him after all. Realising Lance hadn’t turn the engine back on, he looked at the vampire

“Seatbelt”

“Really?”

“Yep. I take the safety of my passengers seriously”

It was a dirt road with no traffic. Begrudgingly Keith pulled his seatbelt on

“Better?”

“Yep. Okay, let’s get this show on the road”

Lance slowed to a crawl as they passed the cemetery. It wasn’t much. A wire fence around the graves with a gate that’d seen better days

“It’s like heritage listed. They clean it up every couple of years. There’s actually a trust that makes sure the older graves don’t lose their markers from erosion and that...”

Not like in big cities where being buried only lasted for like 25 years before someone else was buried on top of you and headstone was tossed

“Cool...”

Lance snorted as he shook his head

“I’ll bring you back here sometime during the day. The old headstones are kind of cool”

“Do you have a headstone?”

“I don’t know, do you?”

Keith deserved that. Lance was dead and alive at the same time

“Sorry”

“Don’t be. No, I don’t. When I’ve been in one place too long, Coran helps me “disappear”. It’d be nice if I could actually age past this, but the people I used to know wouldn’t believe it was me anyway. I look too young to be me”

“You don’t age? At all?”

“I wish I did. It’s hard looking like a teenager. People try to say I’m “woke” or “lit”. Don’t even get me started on modern music. I miss the days when the lyrics told a story”

“You sound like Shiro. He’s the same”

“I would say he’d a smart man, but you’re both kind of... the same”

Lance’s comment got under his skin

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means I told you both you’re not a vampire from the very beginning as you both kept acting like you were. Seriously, you two are so alike that it’s laughable”

“I’m going through changes. You don’t get to be like that when you bit me”

“I bit your melodramatic arse to save you. And told you repeatedly. I’m not getting into this argument again, but you both need to use your ears when someone is trying to tell you the truth”

“How was I meant to believe you?”

“Because I saved your life?”

“You could have been planning to snack on me later”

“Keith, you might be a snack, but I try to limit my bread intake”

Keith blinked half a dozen times. Lance had to mean he was a human sized blood bag snack to a vampire, not that he was... what? Did Lance... no... Lance couldn’t... think he was hot. He was just himself... with weird purple eyes and black hair that was most definitely not a mullet... He didn’t have fluffy brown hair like Lance’s, that always sat in a kind of scruffy casual without being untidy. His skin wasn’t all brown and smooth, nor was he sporting eyes so bright and blue. Not that Keith noticed, like that, he was just observing him. Yep... Outwardsly Lance wasn’t a horrible looking specimen... maybe. He wasn’t sure... Why was he still stuck on this chain of thought?

“Dude, relax. It’s a joke. Okay, we’re here”

“Here” was a barren looking stripped hill. Half a hill, it’d been mined back to expose the stone beneath

“It’s all sandstone up there. They mined out the sandstone and shale. They eventually hit coal down there. Most of the older buildings in town are made from sandstone. I guess having the cemetery so close to the mine made it easiest when mishaps occurred. Don’t tell Pidge, but I already had a fair idea about this place existing. I mean, it had to exist, but we’ve got this old quarry further out that closed down in the ‘50’s, so I guess most people just think most of the stuff came from there or was shipped up from Platt”

“I don’t think I needed the history lesson. Your age is showing”

“I wish it was. I think I’m the only person in the world who hopes to wake up with grey hairs and the occasional wrinkle”

“I think you’re fine how you are”

Keith died on the inside. Fumbling his belt undone, he rushed to get out of the bronco. What the fuck was that? And was there any way to accident murder himself under a ton of rubble in the mine?

The 2021 Destiel Favs Survey!

The December, 2020 edition of the Destiel Fan Favorites Survey is now completed! I got 340 submissions, the most I’ve received since the first time I did the survey in 2017 (this is the fifth time). Since the inception of the survey, I’ve received 1372 surveys, reflecting the tastes of those in the fandom at the time they did the survey and completed especially with an eye toward highlighting excellent lesser-known works.

On the latest survey, 336 different authors were listed as favorites! 165 of these authors were added to the list for the first time. Across all five times I’ve given this survey, 700 authors (on the nose!) have been listed as favorites. You can view a list of all those authors, and links to their accounts, here!

On this survey, an astonishing 1,448 stories received a vote!! The majority - 891 works - were added to the collection for the first time, which is absolutely thrilling to me. 253 of the authors of these works had never been listed before, and now know - they’re someone’s favorite. How awesome is that?

Since the inception of this survey, 3,544 stories by 1,365 different authors have been named as someone’s favorite. All of these works are assembled in a collection that you can view on AO3 here! (works that aren’t on AO3 are bookmarked, as are the works of author’s who chose not to accept the invite to the collection; 210 invites are still pending from the 2021 survey; if authors don’t add their works by next weekend, I’ll bookmark them). Alternatively, you can view a list of every work in the collection, and a link to access the work if it’s still available online, here!

By far, the best way to navigate the collection is to go to the AO3 Collection and use the tags searches and filters to find works that appeal to you. That said, I know some people are curious about results. It’s outside my ability to make lists that include every work, and so I do in general compile some of the data and share those who got the “top” results (not in a ranking, only in alphabetical order). In the past, I've done an annotated "Top 20 Authors" list, where I list (in alphabetical, not ranked) order the authors who received the most votes and every work they have in the collection. I will not be doing that this year. I'll give the top 20 list, but not list all their fics - it's too much, and too many of these authors are the same as previous years. The goal of the Collection is and always has been to highlight the works of authors who don't get as much love and aren't as well known, and I've come to feel the Top 20 list doesn't serve that goal effectively. free PillowFort invites - would you like one? what is PF? glad you asked!

Do you know about PillowFort? Did you find yourself nodding (nay, weeping) about the post I reblogged yesterday about how the tumblr platform sucks for community building? The one with the quote, “When Authors stopped being friends and turned into content providers, new fandom members never learned to care.” from zoinomiko? PILLOWFORT MAY BE EXACTLY RIGHT FOR YOU. Lemme explain!

Pillowfort is like the best of the LJ/DW platform and the best of the tumblr platform, if all of tumblr had most of x-kit installed (snort). (forgive me if this list is long but that’s because PF is fucking amazing - I can’t help it!)

Such as:

following: you can follow others, they can follow you. your feed will be an endless scroll, like here.

reblogs - you like a post, reblog jand it will show up on your PF blog to all of your followers, just like here.

HOWEVER - if you are the original post creator, you control it. Forever.

if you are the post author/creator, you can delete it at any time - and it will be deleted everywhere. (god haven’t you wished you could do this for some of your tumblr posts where reblogs have content you despise but are now permanently out in the world???)

to reiterate: if you made a post, you are in complete control as to its existence - it never ends up reblogged out of your control, because it’s never embedded on someone elses’ blog as new content, even though it’s visible in the PF feeds of those who reblog from you.

you can tag posts when you reblog them, just like here

you can comment on posts (whether you reblog them or not)

as a commenter, you can delete your own comment at any time.

the comment structure is NESTED - like a well constructed forum or DW or LJ. If someone responds to you, it shows up indented under your comment. If someone comments on the original post, it shows up as not indented. Just as you’d expect.

if you’ve only ever been on tumblr you have no idea how much this creates relationships and real community. That post that I reblogged yesterday that talked about how “When Authors stopped being friends and turned into content providers, new fandom members never learned to care.” - THAT is what a forum designed for real discussion in a comprehensible visual format creates.

As the post creator, you can delete anyone’s comments. You are in charge of the vibe on your own original post.

this creates self-selected community involvement - if you’re a jerk, nice people will un-friend your blog and just leave it alone. If you foster happy healthy vibes, people will appear and join and comment.

This fosters a huge golden-rule environment that made some blogs a huge happy success on LJ/DW where mean people were banned and kind people were welcomed and celebrated; and some mean toxic successes - where healthy people went somewhere nicer. I‘m not even gonna bold that. Because fuck that dynamic on the entire internet.

you can create original posts your followers can read/see on their feeds

you can make these available to all without restrictions

OR you can make them any of these options:

un-rebloggable

un-commentable

marked/categorized as NSFW to help others screen

or visible only to mutuals

(a feature whereby we can create our own curated ‘friend groups’ is promised. remember, this is entirely new code they’re creating. features are being requested and implemented as fast as they can roll them out in a functional way)

Incidentally, if you have a problem, the staff is actually real humans who really respond to you! Shocking, isn’t it?

1. why did you choose your url?

It's a long and boring story, but the short version is, my last name is Rose, and Rose is also a convenient short form of Ambrosia, so there you have it. Entertainingly enough, I once came across a ghost story in an anthology that featured a character named Miss Rose Rose, but it was after I'd already begun using the handle.

2. any side-blogs? if you have them, name them and why you have them.

Nope, I have absolutely zero patience for Social Media Management (TM). If you follow this blog, you're getting the unfiltered Me Experience. I hope you've got your tag filters set appropriately 😂

3. how long have you been on tumblr?

Technically since 2008, I think? But I only really started using it ten years later.

4. do you have a queue tag?

See above re: social media management, haha. I never use the queue, I'm kinda surprised people still follow me tbh.

5. why did you start your blog in the first place?

Entirely to stalk @skybound2, which means she is directly responsible for the many amazing friends I've made via Tumblr (both online and IRL). Thank you, love!

6. why did you choose your icon/pfp?

It was the middle of the pandemic, I had a lot less patience for people's shit than usual, and I'd just gotten my hair cut like Andromache the Scythian's. So I decided to experiment with a slightly less friendly-looking avatar. I haven't decided if I'm going to change it to something more cheerful/inviting again...

7. why did you choose your header?

It's a photo of Auke Recreational Area, locally known as Auke Rec, one of the nicer places in Juneau to hang out with friends and have a barbeque/admire the view/generally chill. I have a lot of happy memories there, and while I love the lake in Chicago, I miss that particularly Alaskan combination of stunning mountains rising directly up out of the ocean.

8. what’s your post with the most notes?

a total Stranger Things shitpost I made in an hour, and most of that was finding a meme generator. I'm not mad about it, but I hope at least a few of the people who've liked and reblogged it have also checked out the fic it illustrates.

9. how many mutuals do you have?

Hell if I know. I'm not even sure I could estimate how many people I interact with regularly—I'm on here so erratically that it's kind of a revolving door, depending on who's around and who's awake at the time. But I definitely have those people who it gives me a little jolt of warmth to see their username in my notes <3

10. how many followers do you have?

Don't know, don't care. That way lieth madness.

11. how many people do you follow?

um...maybe 100? 🤷‍♀️

12. have you ever made a shitpost?

See above re: most popular post, haha. I've tried a few others but none have taken off to the same degree. Usually I'm more likely to be muttering to myself about my latest writing project.

13. how often do you use tumblr each day?

Depends. If I'm at the good part of a writing project, or if my life is particularly busy, maybe once. If I'm procrastinating, or sick at home in bed, or just braindead and in need of dopamine, I might open the app dozens of times in a day.

14. did you have a fight/argument with another blog once? who won?

Nah, fighting on social media's not my thing. The unfollow and block buttons exist for a reason.

15. how do you feel about “you need to reblog this” posts

I give 'em the ol' roll-and-scroll. 🙄📜

I do! (Though I feel like this sample set is skewed, haha.) Initially I sorta pooh-poohed them but as I got to know how Tumblr works I've come to enjoy them as ways to bond with people whose posts might otherwise get drowned out in the noise.

I do, because like all performers, I love talking about myself. Plus it's always fun to see which ones people actually send in asks for.

Volunteering Special: Tag Wrangler Training

What kind of prior experience is required or just good to have before you become a tag wrangler? I’m really interested in how this all works!

From the position description (my notes in italics), an applicant should have/be:

An Archive of Our Own account and familiarity with the Archive (It helps if you’ve had your account for a while & have spent time using it)

Legally of age in your local jurisdiction (This means 18+ applicants only, sorry! The Archive is based in the US, so that’s the jurisdiction)

Fandom knowledge and/or research skills

Ability to work as a team

Commitment to diversity and willingness to work descriptively, not prescriptively, in order to respect user tag choices (This means you have to be able to handle what taggers give you, because we never change what tags say. You have to be willing to take things as they are.)

Flexibility to adapt to changing rules and guidelines as fits the needs of the Archive users

Patience with the limitations of Archive tools (Not everything is possible, and you have to be okay with that)

There’s no experience required to be a wrangler. You don’t have to know a thing about databases or coding, which is a common misconception! Wranglers don’t do any of that; coding is handled by an entirely different group of volunteers. If you apply to be a wrangler, you will be taught all the skills you need during your training period.

If you’re looking for what to pay attention to, though, I’ll tell you that knowing what it’s like to tag your own works/use tags to filter works is very useful when wrangling tags. If you know how taggers and readers think, you’re better able to create tags that will be useful to them! But there are wranglers who’ve never posted a work in their lives, as well as wranglers who are prolific fic writers; some wranglers read tons of a works every week, others only read sporadically. No matter what your interaction level is, you can be a good wrangler.

There's some kind of training to be a tag wrangler, right? I'd love to sign up once they open, and someone told me there's training but I thought I'd ask. I want to help my fandoms out, y'know?

There is indeed training! Let’s take a minute to talk about it.

Now, I’m not going to get into the nitty-gritty details, because that’s not my place to discuss. Every trainee has a different experience, because wrangler training is largely self-guided. You’re provided with training materials, and there are mentors who will answer questions, provide advice, and check your work. But wrangler training involves exactly zero Zoom classes or groupwork. You do the training when you have time, your work is checked, and when you’re fully trained, you’re done! If you prefer more interaction, we have online spaces to chat with each other, commiserate, and discuss solutions to problems. If you just want to do your wrangling and be done, you can do that too. It’s up to you!

What was your training experience like?

For me, because I know myself and I am a chronic procrastinator, I did all my training in pretty much one fell swoop. It was easier for me to sit down and knock it all out at once than to do a little here, a little there. Of course, that’s not for everyone! But you get to set your own pace, and mine is “right now, thanks.”

I really enjoyed my training. I made some great friends in my “class,” which is how we refer to each group of wranglers who join at one time. I also had the opportunity to move from my small beginner’s fandoms (some of which I still wrangle!) to larger fandoms fairly early in my tenure as a wrangler. I got to work with more experienced wranglers, who taught me all kinds of skills and tricks, and I got to discover what my personal preferences are as a wrangler. I will also say that I found myself spending a lot of time in the wrangling chatrooms just for fun, and that many of those experienced wranglers were very kind and patient with me, were willing to answer even the weirdest or most basic of questions, and many have become my good friends. All of this helped make my training experience a good one!

A little note for all the wonderful people who are taking a moment out of their precious time to visit this little online space I created...

(I felt the need to write this because of some 'not so great' anon asks I've been getting ever since I started here and also because I've witnessed several of both, the good and bad fandom meltdowns in these couple of years)

From My Heart To Yours-

If it isn't clear to you by the kind of things I post or if you are new to this page, let me clarify it in one single sentence. This Is A Stucky+Evanstan Blog. There will always be mostly (if not all) evanstan and stucky content posted here. If you are uncomfortable with the ship, feel free to filter the 'evanstan' / 'rpf'/ stucky tags. I completely understand why it can be bothersome, icky for people, why some of you might disapprove of it. I acknowledge, respect and understand your views, feelings and opinions, I truly do. All I am asking out of you is to not be disrespectful, dissmissive about those of mine. Please understand that you don't have to see the things/content you don't want to on your dash. The block and unfollow buttons, options for filtering tags are there for a reason. Feel free to use them if you are uncomfortable with a blog or person (including me). It'll be taking the high road and bowing out gracefully if you make a habit of using these available options instead of passing around judgements and unnecessarily cruel critisism about people whom you've never even met/ know nothing about.

Personally I adore both of these Fandom Ships. I have for a long time. But it doesn't mean I don't support you if you love/are a part of some other fandom. I don't mean to disrespect or hinder any of the other ships even if they are regarding these same characters. I try and make sure to not intrude on anyone's creative space and expect that the same attitude & decency will be returned.

This blog is my way of letting out, expressing all that love, adoration I feel. I strive to be more creative with my thoughts, my way of expression as a person with each passing day. And being a part of this fandom helps me immensely with that. I've met some amazing people online because of this. Made good friends. It is a very dear thing to me. I have talked to folks who've experienced online hate from unreasonable, anonymous sources, I've also experienced a fair share of it myself. As someone who is a psychology-enthusiast-&-student-for-life, I can assure you the (good/casual/neutral/bad/hateful) things you say to or about people leave their impacts. Not just on them, but on you too. It might seem insignificant or small, irrelevant even; but it does change the way your thoughts work in daily life. Be careful and stop before you train your mind to naturally focus more on the bad things about other people rather than the good ones. So again, I kindly request you to not be mean or hurtful to anyone you meet online (or even in real life, actually.) Offering disrespect and negativity never made anything better in the history of ever.

Lastly I would like to give my two cents about another issue (that I feel can get really toxic if we are not careful) with the fandom culture. I have made no secret of the fact that I am a fan of Sebastian Stan and Chris Evans. Yes, I have and will always post a lot of appreciation posts about them (solo and together), their works and projects, some old tbt moments. You will even find imagines, headcanons, theories, fanfics about them along with the ones about the fictional characters they have played/continue to play.

But that doesn't mean I am going to act delusionally and ignore/ unacknowledge the fact that both of them are their own person. Two actual, real human beings. I don't mean to project any of this content that I am creating on them and their lives. Making anybody uncomfortable is not my intention behind doing this, not at all. I prefer to look at it this way- "This is a world that I've created in my own mind. For fun and entertainment. Sort of like an AU. Parallel Timeline. But please understand that the stories, theories, things I'll post and write on here are pure conjecture, a lot of speculations. Hypothesis and supposition. I don't want to lose the grasp on reality and be drawned in it too much or completely, up to the point at which violation of real people's boundaries starts to become a usual routine and doesn't feel wrong."

I do not agree with the mentality of blaming, hating on people/past partners in their lives for no other apparent reason than the fact that 'they know my favs'. I completely agree that there are actions and things which people need to be held accountable for at times. Yes, you can talk about it with me but please try and remain respectful (if not that, at least be decent enough) toward all the parties involved.

Even though we as fans have invested a lot of our time, creative efforts and emotions in these two men; It does not mean they owe us, or need to explain every part of their personal/professional lives.

Please remember and don't let it be hard for you to accept the fact that these two people are not the exact fanfic versions of themselves that you read about on tumblr, they are not some experminted and perfected, flawless personalities that you've created in your own minds. It is possible for humans to mess up at times. It is only natural. Don't judge people based only on their worst mistakes, or more precisely the negative stuff you read 'online' (which 9/10 times is pure speculation and made up. fake. not facts.) Chris and Seb do not need to cater to every whim and need of the fans, they do not need to make decisions based on what people feel about them online. They can and should do whatever they want to with their lives without having to experience judgement and public scrutiny about every little step taken. Please stop putting celebrities on a pedestal and measuring them up to some impossible, unrealistic standards. If you feel too much devastation, hurt over some action of your 'fav', my advice would be to take a step back. Relax. Distance yourself from the Fandom for a bit. Do not let the 'stanning' consume you, your behaviour, rational thought process and most importantly don't let it ruin your kindness.

I love the analogy that there lives a good and a bad wolf inside every human being. Your reactions, response to things, all of it depends on which wolf you decide to feed and empower at the given moment. Choose kindness. Choose gentler responses. Choose Love over Hatred. Always.

I think the lovely @musette22 (who btw, is one of the most compassionate, talented and creative people I've met here, because of our shared love for these boys 💙) voiced this thing better than I ever could.

For the fandom talk meme thingy: C (not trying to start drama I swear), I, K, R, and X. =D

C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.

Hmmm, there are a few ways of answering this. One is by listing all my NOTPs, which would be excessively long and ultimately boring because it essentially boils down to “anyone else with either member of my OTP.” I monoship my primary pairings, so I’m pretty strict on what I do and do not like.

(With the way fandom is now, I should clarify that NOTP means that I personally do not like a ship and I therefore go out of my way to avoid it - by muting terms, carefully filtering tags and search results, curating my own space, etc. It doesn’t mean I think the ship is badwrong or that anyone else should stop shipping it. It just means I do not ever want to see it.)

This feels a little less specific on that front, though, maybe more just: people like this and I’m meh about it?

So Allydia comes to mind. I don’t hate it, and if the Sterek’s good enough I’ll still read a fic with them as a background pairing, but I don’t ever like it as a romantic ship. While I ship Lydia with lots of different characters, including Cora, I’ve always seen Allison as straight, so I suppose that’s part of it? And I love Lydia & Allison as bffs - I see them as entirely platonic, like Scott & Stiles, so introducing romance just doesn’t work for me.

Another one is Sheriff Stilinski/Peter Hale. I...I don’t understand it. Unlike the last answer, this background pairing will prevent me from reading a Sterek-central fic.

I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?

This turned into a complicated and kind of roundabout answer, so I’m putting the rest of the questions under a long-post cut!

I stopped frequenting tumblr for two main reasons:

that whole weird purge thing that made me think everyone was leaving, so I just gave up, which might’ve been premature cause it seems like folks are still going strong on here

the emergence of antis, specifically within the Voltron fandom (although they’re everywhere at this point)

There’s a saying in fandom now:

“Why is the younger fandom generation like this?!??” “Tumblr raised them.”

For me, for years, tumblr was a really wonderful space where I had a lot of great conversations and read very thoughtful threads that helped me to learn some important things about myself, other people, and a world much wider than my own.

But I was an adult when I joined this site, and it really does seem like there’s a whole new crop of kids who have no actual context for ideas like social justice, the need for canonical representation in our media, and a lot of other things that eventually got folded into a big ball of disconnected rhetoric that they now fling as hard as they can at the heads of fandom creators who are committing the ultimate sin of creating content for ships they don’t like.

It’s late, and I don’t feel like getting into a whole Essay Rant about all that.

So on an entirely personal level, I quit running appreciatejack (my Check Please/zimbits/Jack Zimmermann blog) because someone sent me really vile hate for daring to ship Shiro/Keith from Voltron (two unrelated adults in a cartoon). It’s why I turned my ask boxes/anon/chats off on most of my blogs, and then eventually just...got tired of running them.

When I started up appreciatederek, I got a couple asks from people who wanted to know if it was going to be multiship or just Sterek, and when I said it was Sterek, they presumably went off to find other things they were into, because I never heard from them again. Y’know, the reasonable reaction. And then the rest of it was wonderful: finding content for it, and getting responses from people who enjoyed that content.

I thought appreciateshiro would be similar, but it was all so messy from the very start. The Sheith tag was FULL of hate. I was initially checking it every day, trying to find artists and writers and gif-makers to reblog and encourage and support, like I’d done in Sterek fandom, but instead I’d spend literal hours blocking people who came into that tag just to talk about how much they hated the ship.

Every day, I’d look for content for my OTP, and every day I’d come away from it angry and sad and frustrated. I never seemed to run out of people to block. And they never, ever seemed to run out of hate.

It was exhausting. It made me reluctant to go on tumblr at all. And eventually I just...sorta stopped.

So the answer to this question is more, I guess, “fandom made me stop liking tumblr, and in the process I stopped liking most fandoms.”

I’m sure you can kinda tell from the fandoms I’m currently the most invested in.

I love Sterek, and I will always love Sterek. Part of that’s the ship itself, of course, and part is because I had an incredible fandom experience with it. People within this fandom are still really great - always so welcoming and super excited about new content, even so many years on.

Otherwise, my current fandoms are kiiiiinda tiny:

Xanatowen (Gargoyles), which currently consists of exactly 2 people and 12 fics (3 of which are mine).

Trevorcard (Castlevania), which only has ~200 fics on AO3.

Taibani (Tiger & Bunny), which is an oldish fandom with only ~600 fics on AO3.

Remember, I came from a fandom that has SIXTY THOUSAND fics.

So while I feel very lonely and very sad about the low content levels in these fandoms, they’ve also given me the space to let go of some of my fandom hurt & anger and remember what it’s like to just...peacefully love something. Found family. This is probably a big part of why Sterek was my first real fandom, because the idea of Pack makes it incredibly natural to build out relationships beyond just the central romantic pairing.

It doesn’t have to be a werewolf thing, though. I’m honestly not hugely fond of the whole puppy piles concept - I’m less interested in “biological urges make characters literally physically all snuggle up together in bed” than I am in the actual build of the friendships, and the concept of choosing people who will become the family you’ve been missing for whatever reason.

Maybe it’s reconnecting with biological family, or maybe it’s discovering that your friends have been filling that space for you all along, without you even fully realizing it. (The concept of “home” is another big one for me. Home is where your heart is etc etc.)

And hey! Now I can pull back in another question from earlier: about “pairings” that I might not have initially considered. As I suspected, I do have more! Mostly platonic.

For instance: Derek and Sheriff Stilinski becoming bffs. I thiiiink I can probably tie my ABSOLUTE LOVE of this concept back to HalfFizzbin’s can't be hateful, gotta be grateful. And then Cupboard Love really has to be the source of ALL my alive!Hales feels, which also includes folding Stiles into their family.

Fic is largely responsible for building out Derek’s relationship with Boyd, Erica, Isaac, his sisters...making them into an actual pack and friends and family in the way the show never bothered. And frankly while I don’t like canon!Scott at all at this point, I love his friendship with Stiles in fics, and I absolutely believe Stiles and Lydia would be amazing friends once he got past his crush on her. I’d point to another fic here, owlpostagain’s will to follow through, as the ultimate source for major Team Human feels.

So yeah. I’m always going to be drawn to stories about family, in whatever form that takes, particularly if it’s one that’s a little bit off the normal white-picket-fence path.

In Tiger & Bunny, it’s Barnaby joining the Kaburagi family, and learning how to be a dad and a friend to his new husband’s daughter.

In Gargoyles, I’m completely obsessed with the (canonical!) idea of a family that consists of a man, his wife, their son, and the chaotically loyal fae babysitter/tutor/third parent. It is not a stretch to tweak this the tiiiiiiniest bit to turn it into a nontraditional family structure of a man, his wife, his son, and his fae boyfriend. Honestly.

In Castlevania, the fic that made me sob my eyes out at one point does something the show would absolutely never. It gives Alucard the time to rebuild his physical home while befriending the people in the little town that crops up around it. It’s about Trevor and Alucard falling in love, but it’s also about them making a place for themselves in a world where that kind of comfort and stability and friendship is so badly needed.

I think we all kinda need that in our world right now. So I love being able to find it in fic, for the characters who’ve grown to mean something to me.

WIP Report 4/22/20

So just a heads up (I know, I gotta stop starting sentences with so, it’s a bad habit) on how things are going and what you can expect to see soon and slightly less soon! Here’s a quick rundown on what’s in progress ‘round these parts.

Sorry, this is long because y’all ought to know by now I’m a wordy bitch! So (I did it again) buckle up I’m about to ramble.

Backlog - I still have some works to crosspost here from AO3, so you’ll still see some of my older work pop up in the evenings for the rest of the month. I’m going to do some of my older one shots for the rest of this week, and then Sunday will be the college AU multichapter I did for the first week of Lukanette Month last year (not Hey Gorgeous but a different college AU I did before that). Again if you’ve already read my AO3 stories and you don’t want to see them again here you can use the ‘backlog’ tag to filter.

Weekly Prompts - I’m still doing them, although I missed last week’s and I may actually miss this week’s (or it may inspire one of the kiss prompts) just because I’m so behind. But I’ll still be doing those, they’re fun and they help me from getting tunnel vision on a project too badly. As a reminder the @mlweeklyprompts is open to anybody and is any ML ship allowed, no ship required, just check the rules and tag the blog so that you can be reblogged. And if you don’t feel like following the rules, there’s no prompt police, so you can do what you want, it just won’t be reblogged if it’s outside of the guidelines.

Beautiful Dreams - I’m so thankful for the people who’ve let me know they enjoyed the first chapter. Now that I’ve started posting this will be my absolute priority until it’s finished. I love this fic, I’ve been working on it a long time, and I’m really excited for it. I know it’s a little heavier than my usual fare but it’ll still have happy endings all around so I hope you’ll stick with me. I’m expecting about a week to a week and a half between updates. The first four chapters are mostly written so there will be some editing and polishing that has to happen (I’m still debating about exactly where to to put the break between chapters two and three) and I will also be working on the last two chapters so that hopefully by the time the first four chapters are up, the last two chapters will also be mostly done so there won’t be a huge delay there. These are long chapters compared to my previous stories, so there’s that too. Chapter 1 was the shortest by quite a couple thousand words so far.

Gamer AU - Also high up on the list. I’m actually debating making this a separate story from the rest of I’ll Never Not Know You and splitting it into chapters because it’s getting to be kind of a monster to do all in one bite. But, even if I do that, because I write terribly out of order I don’t have a part 1 to put up yet. I was thinking I could finish this week but I just got so behind last week that I don’t think it’s going to happen, I’m still catching up on the have to do list and I haven’t even had a chance to touch this yet.

April Kisses - I’ll keep this going if I can get some short ones up over the next couple of days to give me some breathing room; I hate to give up so close to the end - there’s only 9 days left (8 because I wrote a short cute one for tomorrow already). They’re not really worth delaying the other projects over, though, so I’ll just have to play it by ear and see where I’m at.

The Soulmate AU - I hear you guys that want this, I love it a lot and once I get through the rest of Beautiful Dreams I really want to focus on this and toss some ideas with my writing buddies and see if I can really get this one rolling again. I have a beginning, I have an end that I love, I just...have to figure out what happens in between and I haven’t had a lot of time to focus on it. If I decide that I just can’t make it work as a full length story, I promise you will get what I’ve already got. If worst comes to worst, I can write about a paragraph to connect the end and the beginning and you’ll just miss out on the long distance stuff.

I’ll Never Not Know You - I still have some things that people requested that I haven’t done yet, and they’re still on the list, but again these will be backburnered a bit while I focus on Beautiful Dreams, and to be honest, I think it will be a good thing. I won’t say I’m burned out on first meetings, I don’t think it’s that extreme, but these were originally meant to be fun and short and they’ve started turning into these huge monsters, which isn’t a bad thing necessarily because I like the pieces I’ve done, but they’re work, when they were meant to be just quick, fun little pieces to go between the longer stories.

Other Stuff - I still have a list of ideas for Across All Realms, I’m still planning on a part 2 (and possibly 3) for Man’s Best Fang, I’ve got five or six other things in various stages of writing, some of them AU’s that I’m really excited about (Although WHY I keep writing AUs involving stuff that I know NOTHING ABOUT is really beyond me, but then again if I stuck to what I know that would be like...knitting. It would be a knitting AU. Knitting and dogs.) As we get closer to the end of Beautiful Dreams you might start seeing some of this stuff in WIP Wednesdays or SSS as I start looking ahead.

A quick note on WIP Wed/SSS - I just want to thank everybody who likes or reblogs those WIP Wed and SSS posts and/or tells me that you’re excited for a particular thing, that’s actually both super encouraging and really helpful because it helps me prioritize, and while I absolutely try to write what I like and the things that are important to me, your excitement gets me excited.

So thanks for sticking around and reading through all this mess! I hope that gives any of you who might want to know a rough picture of the plan going forward.

1. Tell us about your current project(s) – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?

Currently, I’m working on a fic titled A Monstrous Manifesto, which is a fic entirely inspired by Cat Valente’s poem of the same name. Every line is a chapter, every noun is a part of that chapter, and every single beast named corresponds to a Spectre, allowing me to dig directly into their heads and demonstrate their full psychology.

Progress stopped unfortunately back in July on part four - a fiend, which I picked Deadly Beetle Stand for, because I just couldn’t get into his head. Kiril played soundboard for it and I’ve been humming and hawing over him trying to figure it out, but let’s be real it’s gonna come to me in a dream.

Because see here, most folks who’ve read my works, if told to point to my best, it’ll either be a) my breakthrough with Armour Adventures (which tbh if I redid I’d do better on), b) In Kismet Marcescence (which I need to sit down and plot out properly before I continue), or c) rather unexpectedly to me, Green Grows The Asphodel. Guess everyone likes that soft MiAlba where Alba gets his bastardization arc, but also I let him speedrun it in Broken Shine The Stars and people seem to like that one too, so.

The thing is with AMM is that this would be my greatest work. Like AA, it’s gen, but here’s the one advantage I’ve realized I actually have over pretty much everyone else in this fandom: I am myself a monster, fictionkind and all. I’m a Devil and a feral little beast, which means when you offer me Spectres - warriors of the dark and death who are all based around animal motifs - I take one look and go “oh! You’re like me!” and proceed to write them as actual monsters while having some unspoken and long-winded conversation about what it means to be human, what it means to be shunned, and what it means to belong among the broken.

It means that I write Spectres wildly different than anyone who isn’t Kiril (who is on the same wavelength as me and we argue back and forth about the inner details of everyone’s monstrosity), which means when I do it, nobody’s seen this shit before and apparently people seem to think it’s cool. So AMM is the very epitome of that style, of that psychological and philosophical discussion. I don’t really have a background of research in either of those things, so any similarities to works or theories already out there is entirely coincidence. Cat Valente’s poem was the first stepping stone I ever took to accepting myself for who - and what - I am. I owe as much of my identity and confidence to her as I do Zamorakian philosophy, which built my personality and is a major part of how I survived the middle school era of my life. The least I can do in return is offer the best of me out into the world.

4. Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like)

“Somewhere deep below conscious thought, below his training and the life and this Lemurian body, buried under lifetimes of war, buried under the idea that a Spectre was a fighter, his blood remembered how to love the memory of the fallen.” - Beneath Blood Ties

BBT is one of my most unappreciated fics, which makes sense as it’s set almost two thousand years prior to Classic, starring a fourteen-year-old Lemurian Minos and the Saint who raised him, Aries Kirien, whose name is probably still spelled Kiriel at least once in the fic because no beta we die like Gold Saints.

The original inspiration comes from Seanan McGuire’s Once Broken Faith, and the line in question is Toby reading the Luidaeg’s blood memories after the latter told a young Karen that she couldn’t speak Faerie even in her dreams - she speaks it in her blood memories, and Toby notes that her blood remembers.

It stuck with me, though I’ve read OBF approximately a million times. It, along with A Killing Frost and An Artificial Night, are my three top Toby books. And it responded to me as someone who’s fictionkind: I couldn’t speak the language I spoke as a Devil in my dreams, or in the waking world, but I know some part of me remembers it. Would know how. The Chaorruption filters all of that into English because it thinks it’s helping, but if I were a magical creature right now, in this world, I’m pretty sure my blood would remember.

So I wrote about Minos, and the sorrow he carried. The premise of BBT is that a Pope realized some Spectres come back, went around before they became Spectres, and kidnapped the lot of them to train as Saints, leaving them all traumatized as fuck, unsure of who they were or who they followed, and messed up for lifetimes. I also wanted to show more that Spectres were more than what the Holy Wars made of them, and about digging through that exotrauma to remember that they could be kind.

Spectres, originally, would make sense as really just Hades’ servants and the ones who keep the Meikai running. Pretty sure that means they know every single death rite that’s existed in the past three millennia. Pretty sure they know how to be respectful of the dead. Pretty damn sure that below all that soldiering and war, they’re all really exhausted librarians who want to do their job and also dig graves.

But I like this sentence here best, because that’s pretty much the climax of the plot here: that there is, in fact, something underneath all his exotrauma, all the current trauma he’s been dealing with. That below all of that bitterness and war, he’s a better person than what Athena made of him.

Idk, I just think it’s neat and no I’m not projecting being ‘kin on him again. /j

5. What character that you’re writing do you most identify with?

Albafica, to nobody’s surprise. I mean, come on. A guy with a fuckton of traditionally-feminine beauty whose looks keep getting brought up, is very introverted, has seen some shit, just wants to kill people who hurt what he cares about while also not hurting the people he does care about, really wants you to keep your damn distance, is super touchstarved, and holding onto his humanity with his fingertips? Come on the only things he’s got that I don’t is an actual male reproductive system and naturally blue hair.

Once you realize that especially in TLC Athena’s actions are pretty damn horrific, especially to her Saints, Albafica has the perfect setup to become a Spectre. Seriously, if he’d been offered Luco’s deal but while holding a dying Lugonis, do you really think he wouldn’t have taken it? I explore that more in Broken Shine The Stars, but like. Albafica is the perfect fallen angel of a character. He has genuinely good intentions. He’s hurting so damn bad and only fucking once in his entire onscreen performance is that acknowledged (shoutout to Luco for that one), and if you take his sorrow and let him turn it into anger, he’s a glorious monster indeed. Albafica’s descend into monstrosity and Spectrehood is exactly what would happen if I got angry and also hadn’t been fucking nerfed physically.

I love him way too much.

6. What character do you have the most fun writing?

Surprisingly, Aiacos. Alba’s hard as fuck to write. Aiacos, though. You’ve heard me go off about Aiacos at length, but like. He’s the very embodiment of the worst person you can become while still loving, still surviving. Aiacos is the type of person we’re all capable of becoming, and we all should be terrified of becoming, because every single choice he’s ever made is completely understandable and that much more horrific for it.

It’s somewhat unsurprisingly easy to get into his head. He’s fun to write because he scares me. Because if I let him do all the dumb, selfish, sadistic-looking, survival-focused things, then I don’t have to worry about doing it myself. I let him look out for only himself when the pieces are down, so I can do better.

Also I haven’t seen anyone else write him that way (Kiril being the obvious exception here), so it’s double the fun because new territory.

11. What do you envy in other writers?

Hey. Hey you fuckers who can plot shit. Give me the number of the demon you sold your soul to. Let me PLOT SHIT.

15. Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?

Summaries! Titles are easy, I steal them from songs and Toby books. They’re just fancy wordplay and I have literally a list on my fic spreadsheet of titles I want to use. Summaries, though, are very important. People don’t pick fics based on title and tags, they pick based on summary. They’re your hook into the work, so you’ve got to give the audience your premise short and sweet and actually sounding appealing.

Sometimes I can write them no problemo. Other times, they’re a fucking nightmare. I try to imply the tone of the ending in my summary, because I have absolutely been blindsided by the ending in a way I really didn’t like because I thought the summary was hiding the ending. (Example - there was this one fic that made it sound like my OTP was going enemies to lovers, and it wasn’t, it wasn’t, it needed the fucking dead dove do not eat tag, stopped just short of serious nonsexual noncon (which wasn’t tagged at all), and ended very unhappily and it messed me up for days, I did not like it.)

So for my summaries I set the scene, set the tone, and imply the tone of the ending so you have a vague idea of where it’s going. Easier said than done.

21. What other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)

Anime, probably! Manga wouldn’t lend itself too well to my style, but I’d enjoy short anime episodes, I think. I honestly don’t know. Someone tell me what my stuff would work good as. I dunno.

22. Do you reread your old works? How do you feel about them?

For fic, all the time! I write what I want to read, and since six out of seven of the Dohko/Kagaho works on AO3 were my fault, I’d better get used to reading my own writing for pleasure. Fortunately, I like most of my writing recently, so that’s pretty all right!

Don’t ask about what I had up on ff.net. Don’t. It’s old and bad and I didn’t know how to write.

23. What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?

Hmmm... I want to rephrase this better as ‘what fic exists only as a concept and has done so for the longest out of all the concepts of fics currently in my head’, and hmmmm. Honestly, it’s either Shion and Aiacos’ romance fic where they also get a daughter (which has a title actually, The Lost Sea Fantasia, but still hasn’t been written); or it’s Wyvern Rose and the Trials of Lightning, which is about 15th century Rhada’s two daughters, the elder of which is surprise-given his surplice and his job when he dies right before Hades does, and the younger of which is kidnapped by a spiteful goddess who doesn’t like the elder of the two.

ToL is a fic that I have somewhat plotted out, but really needs a lot of work. I’m not really sure how to go about writing it, because whenever I sit down to sketch it out, it never comes to me. It does, however, lend itself well as a bedtime / campfire story that Albafica tells Regulus while they’re out on a mission together, as part of Alba sneakily teaching Regu how to be a Spectre without anyone knowing. It’ll stay a concept for a long while until Rose crashes into my headspace and actually fucking tells me more about herself other than “oh yeah btw I’m fucking Julia” like thanks, already knew that from Julia herself, tell me more about you you awful little Judge of a dragon princess.

EVERY FOUNDER SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CONTRARIAN

Lately hackerliness seems rather frowned upon. But she did not contradict them. When a friend of mine used to grumble because he had to write a paper for school, if that will restrict you or make it seem like work. So I'm not suggesting you be good in the usual sanctimonious way. Don't feel like you have to invent some explanation to account for all the effort technology companies have expended trying to make sales would be a good time to start any company that competes with TV networks. 05, or 4. I agree you shouldn't underestimate your potential.

The constraints that limit ordinary companies also protect them. Recently I've had several emails from computer science undergrads asking what to do about it. These get through because I'm a programmer too, and the rate at which it changes is itself speeding up. Robotics, for example. Language courses are an anomaly. There are two ways to do that, because you can start today. Getting rejected by investors can make you less attractive to investors.

So if they're all squawking, perhaps there is something amiss. People are always asking you this, so you think you're supposed to be. If you're making a valiant effort and fail, they'll cut you a break. But they may not realize that such laws, though intended to protect national security and intellectual property turned out to be more politics, and less scope for individual decisions. The answer probably depends on the type of company you're starting, so long as you're not wasting your time. And the very best ideas. YC's alumni network is certainly among the most valuable things you could do. If I were running a startup, there are companies you can hire to manage it for you. At the bottom you'll find the subjects with least intellectual content. I don't know enough about music to say. I suspect it's the startup world is evolving away from their current model. The computer world has a name for this: premature optimization.

So I don't think we'll ever reach the point where they got rich from some multilevel marketing scheme. I discovered that one of our teachers was herself using Cliff's Notes, it seemed par for the course. It will be longer on the Internet in 20 years, I wouldn't dare to make any predictions, except that things will change a lot. The earlier you pick startups, the qualities that come up in the supporting arguments are toughness, adaptability, determination. But when you do something in an ugly way. Most people overestimate its role, but it has been experimentally verified, in the Gmail sense everything I've told you so far. After all, projects within big companies were always getting cancelled as a result of arbitrary decisions from higher up. The best case, for most people the latter is huge the former should be too.

TV networks will fight these trends, because they usually have a class of powerful bureaucrats who are paid mostly by seniority and can never be fired. If you're friends with a lot of people, particularly those who've started ordinary businesses. If you major in economics it will be higher. But after I'd been there a few months I realized that if you invest in startups is not simply that they trained their filter on very little data: 160 spam and 466 nonspam mails. But the two connections are distinct and in principle one could start a startup that seems like it's going to get filled. One of the most dangerous sort, because they're so nervous. Subject free 0. No. But seeing what startups are really like will at least show other organizations what to aim for. Till then the best I'd managed was to get the fastest possible standing quarter mile. Smart-alecks have to develop a keen sense of how much they can get into grad school in economics, but if so this is a serious idea. Growth drives everything in this world.

So you have to do is help it. And most importantly, what are you interested in? Unfortunately the sort of poking around that leads to new ideas. If they were just like us, then they had to move back to Canada and live in their parents' basements. You don't need to: it lets them choose their growth rate is, because we're up in the noise, statistically. You can use the need for growth as a form of evolutionary pressure. They still met with them, but because authenticity is one of the five marked contexts as making a token more specific.

The other connection between startups and what passes for productivity in big companies. Would the city be described as hip and tolerant, or as reflecting traditional values? And passion is a bad way to put it, because it may turn out to be an intellectual contrarian to be a good investor, the deal flow of the whole economy. And she wrote three separate essays about the question of what sort of person to start a new channel. During Y Combinator we measure growth rate per week, partly because there is a limit on the amount of math you need as a hacker is a lot more Googles. In the so-called real world this need is a powerful force. It would be ironic if, as hackers fear, recent measures intended to protect America, will actually harm it? They say they're going to flake. But if you talk to startups, you find practically every one over a certain size has gone through legal contortions to get programmers for the same reason that, if I were a couple is a big opportunity.

It's not just because fakers and opportunists are annoying, but because it's so much harder than they expected. If you tag along on a friend's investments, you don't understand YC. I'm hopeful things won't always be so awkward. The programs you write in classes differ in three critical ways from the ones you'll write in the real world, programs are bigger, tend to involve existing code, for example, you can let the numbers speak for you. Childhood was getting old. So the fact that you're mainly interested in hacking and you go to grad school to become a big, evil company is trying to stop them in order to do well on tests. They may be enough to kill all the opt-in lists. Investors like it when you're ramen profitable. Often the other party doesn't really think about what they want when they want it, and we soon dropped the pretense. They want to know whether you're about to plow through a block of foam or granite.

Hi There!

Are you new here? Well, hello. It’s nice to meet you. My name is Sarah. I’m turning 34 years old in June and I’ve been writing since I was 13/fanfic writing since 15. I have a BA in English and a MFA in poetry. I don’t use either of them for shit. My grammar is terrible sometimes. I won’t judge you if you won’t judge me.

For those of you who’ve been here awhile, this is just a refresher. Skip this post if you don’t care about my life.

So, what brings you here? Fandom? Which one? I primarily use this to post writing and gifs and such about OUAT/Captain Swan. Yes, the show is over. But I don’t care. I will write these idiots falling in love every way I can until the well runs dry for my muses. My thoughts on Season 7? If I don’t have to talk about it, that’s cool. I didn’t watch it, tbh. I watched the Captain Swan scenes, felt a lovely pull for Alice and Robin, but otherwise did not partake. I sometimes wish season 7 hadn’t happened because it undeniably broke the CS ship and I kind of miss when it wasn’t a hateful shitshow in some corners of the fandom. I respect your views on it, though, if you liked it or hated it.

What do I write? Well, primarily AU stories. I’ve had a bit of a knack for them since I was younger. I try to keep them as in-character as possible, but sometimes you’ll see something I’ve written and think “Huh! This is slightly/outrageously OOC!” I apologize for that. Even the best attempts still miss someone’s expectations. (The older the fic, the more likely it is OOC, honestly.)

I like fluff and smut. Plain and simple. I have ventured into angst, I will sometimes write canon-verse stories, I like to switch POV, I do not like writing or reading whump, I will never be caught dead writing rape, non-con, or dub-con. I try to add warnings for anything I think will be a bother to someone, but sometimes I do not succeed. If you ever think I should tag or tw something, pop a message in my inbox.

I do my best to be friendly with as many people as possible. Does that mean I don’t have anyone on here that doesn’t like me? No. I’m sure there are plenty of people who don’t. Just as there are people that I don’t care for. I stay in my lane; I keep doing my thing. I don’t much care what anyone has to say about me otherwise.

This is a safe space. I believe in love and rights to all nationalities, genders, races, religions, sexuality, and everything in between. I am a bisexual white woman. Chances are, I don’t know what you’ve been through if you’re not that exact specification. I will do my best to never step on your toes. Unless you’re a Nazi or a Trump supporter. In which case, get the fuck off my page. Block me. I don’t care. I don’t want you here. You will not enjoy anything I post.

I have a slew of weird health issues. Confirmed, I have anxiety and depression. I have PMDD and PCOS, and now there’s a possibility that I’ve developed endometriosis. That one is new and scary to me because I don’t know if that’s true yet. I have binge eating disorder, as well. I am overweight by more than I can stand and wish desperately that I could get it under control.

I drink a lot of coffee, I smoke cigarettes, I know neither of these are good for me in the long run.

Other things/fandoms/stuff I love: Marvel movies, Friends, GoT, Wheel of Time, Colin O’Donoghue, Jennifer Morrison, Josh Dallas and Ginnifer Goodwin, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Queen/Bohemian Rhapsody. There are bunches that I’m forgetting, but I do my best to tag everything so if you don’t like something, you can filter out that tag. If a post is about me/my life, I tag it “sarah for life stuff” so you can ignore that if you want to. I’m extremely bad about tagging my general posts so sometimes random memes and shit will just be tagged LOL. I’m sorry for this inconsistency but I’ll work on tagging all that as “random” from this point forward.

I work front desk at a hotel, so you’ll see front desk jokes and stories sometimes. I also teach freshman composition at a university, but after this semester I am quitting that for at least a little bit.

The Rag-Tag Gang - so they’ve coined themselves. Majority of them met in their freshmen year, a group of friends who’ve gone through wild adventures together. They’re the first people that Cade felt comfortable with after high school, the group of people that he felt he could have the fresh start that he thought he would never get. All of them mean the world to him and he knows he’s partly who he is today because of them. Whether they know it or not, they’ve helped him grow and while he still knows he has a lot more growing to do, Cade is forever in debt to them. Since joining the Vixens, he hasn’t been able to spend as much time with them but as of late Cade’s been trying his best to make time for all parts of his life.

Michael and Trevor

Cade’s past roommates. They were stuck together freshmen year and they’ve all been friends ever since, a rag-tag group who just take things one day at a time. Michael’s a biology major, highly intelligent, and logical but you’d never guess that from looking at him. He’s asleep 90% of the time and when he’s awake, he’s getting high and trying to shoot rubber bands at Trevor. He doesn’t do well in big crowds but as long as he’s with the group he does better.

Trevor on the other hand is a theatre major and video game extraordinaire, specialty being Mario Kart. Often times he’s seen laughing, will pop into random accents on the fly, and he’s notorious for pulling pranks on Cade. Trevor and Cade are the closest from the roommate trio, but they chalk that up to the two of them having theatre and starring in a few productions together. The two still hang out but Trevor tends to be a bit passive aggressive about Cade no longer being their roommate.

James

James is often the mother hen of the group. He keeps all the others from getting too crazy and reminds them that they all need to actually do schoolwork. But he knows how to have fun and challenge him to a game of poker? James turns into a whole other person. He’s a music major, focusing on music therapy for children. Cade and James often bond over instruments and James has been teaching Cade how to play the piano for the past couple years. When it comes to newcomers to the group, he tends to be a bit on edge but warms up once he knows the person has good intentions.

Allison

Another theatre major, Allison is more interested in the stage production side of things and she has an eye for detail. She loves everything about art and literature and spends a lot of time with Cade just chatting for hours about those topics. The two of them were very close (along with Megan) up until Cade joined the Vixens. There’s a little tension between the two of them, but Allison loves Cade like a brother and just wants to see him around more. Allison is a spitfire woman; she says what’s on her mind and doesn’t have much of a filter but she loves more than most people in the world.

Megan

Darling little Megan is usually seen with Allison, the two of them roommates. Cade met Megan freshman year, her and Allison in the room across the hall from Cade, Michael, and Trevor in the co-ed dorm. She’s the friend in the group who is always a bit out there when it comes to ideas and conversations. She’s also a theatre major, but her focus is more in her art major with her passion in photography. Cade helps out Megan whenever he can; she used to call on him a lot to be her model. Megan’s tiny, full of energy, and pretty much spiriting a golden retriever.

Piper

The sunflower girl, Piper is a hippy ray of sunshine. She loves anything and everything about the planet from animals to sunflowers and how the world just exists. Piper’s often wearing anything flowy paired with a flower crown. Full of laughs, she’s carefree and compassionate. Cade and Piper met through the theatre program as well; the two classmates during a seminar. Piper also comes from a large family and never left home before college so when she became part of the friend group, she instantly felt at home. Piper’s often teasing James to lighten up and live life.

Dylan

Dylan is the “normal” of the group. As normal as their group really gets. Dylan’s a math major, spends most of his time with his nose in textbooks and writing down equations. Dylan’s the reason Cade got through his math class his sophomore year and the two became friends from it. Dylan doesn’t drink or smoke with the others, but he’s always up for hanging out with them and having a good time. When the group has their Mario Kart nights, Dylan’s usually keeping score on who is winning after the tournament that proved he couldn’t operate a controller. He’s also the most supportive out of the group, going to all their performances, showcases, presentations, etc.

Ricky

They’re another big personality, loud and wild with stories to tell everyone who wants to listen. They came into the group by sheer… luck? A wild karaoke night that ended with Ricky dancing on a table and Cade laughing on the ground, the rest of the group instantly adopting them. They study art but have big ambitions to travel the world after graduation and live in a camper with rescue dogs. Ricky is very open, the one of the group who will drop everything to come to the aid of another. Sometimes there’s conflict between James and Ricky because they like to bring random strangers to the get-togethers, but Danny wouldn’t be in the group if it weren’t for Ricky.

Danny

Danny’s the newest to the group, coming in at the end of sophomore year. Ricky met Danny when he first transferred. They found him lost in the halls entirely unsure of how to get to his next class so they helped them out… and brought Danny to the friend group. It didn’t take too long for Danny to fit it, another music major who also has a passion for archaeology (but he keeps it to reading books and studying about it). He’s generally laid-back and doesn’t get into too much craziness, preferring to sit back and enjoy the scene. Cade and Danny got along pretty well, the two of them bonding particularly over pinball (another crazy story). Danny’s the boyfriend of Dylan, the two of them having been dating since midsummer.
