In Sinfully-desilicious, we are going to celebrate and honour the indigenous/traditional rice varieties of Tamilnadu. Among 150 revived  indigenous rice varieties, this deep purple-black coloured rice stole the show as a showstopper for its umpteen health benefits. It’s a triad combo of tasty, healthy, and robust flavours. Enumerating its health perks, the most prominent one is the anthocyanin pigments which acts as strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. It also contributes to the sweet and nutty flavours of the rice. Other attributes are -naturally gluten-free, rich in protein, natural fiber, vitamins, and nutrients, also a good source of iron for vegetarians, less in glycaemic index, reduces diabetes and promotes weight loss, good for heart patients, and helps brain activity. In KKR Idli (I’ll abbreviate Karuppu Kavuni Rice as KKR, ), we mix this indigenous KKR with parboiled rice along with urad dal and fenugreek seeds. Here, I used Rice flakes/Poha/Aval as an optional ingredient. Did a little steak & rice tonight. Reverse-seared a big rib-eye and cooked up some black (forbidden!) rice. - Steak: Seasoned steak all over w/ salt/pepper/parsley. Stuck on rack over a pan & set into a 210F oven for about 45-50 minutes. Removed & put in hot pan w/ a bit of oil. Added butter/garlic & seared on each side for a couple of minutes each while butter basting. Removed & let rest for about 5-10 minutes. - Rice: I forgot I still had a bit of black rice so decided to use some. Cooked it up & strained. Added chopped up cheese & green onions. - Sauce: I made a creamy horseradish sauce for the steak. Mixed up horseradish cream/mayo/dijon mustard/sour cream/green onions/salt. - Result: Simple & delicious. I didn't trust my reverse-sear the way I should have & pan fried the steak longer than I should. Should have just done a minute(ish) per side instead of 2(ish). Came out more medium than medium rare. Black rice is always good but is chewy & can be a bit bland so the cheese was a good touch. B for Bulk. 

Buying in bulk can make a huge difference in reducing packaging waste. Lots of grocery stores offer this for nuts and grains . Save your old jars or stock up on cloth bags or mason jars. Have the cashier tare the weight of the jar for you first, then fill her up! My favorite bulk section is at the Marquette Food Co-op, where I restock quinoa, rice, various seeds, baking goods, maple syrup, and snacks. What can you buy in bulk?

Take action: Keep some jars in your grocery totes so you’re prepared to buy in bulk next time.
