✨ Tips for Collecting Shells
Respect local laws: Some places protect shells, corals, and marine wildlife! Always check if it's okay to take them.
Ethical gathering: Only take empty, dead shells (never with a creature still inside).
Cleanse shells: Wash gently with water and sea salt before using them in spells or altars.
🐚 Shell Magic Ideas
Use cowrie shells in money bowls.
Sand dollars are amazing for transformation rituals.
Conch shells can be used as literal horns to call spirits or start a ritual.
Tiny auger shells make great protection charms to wear or carry.
Paper nautilus shells (if you can find one!!) are perfect for creativity and dream weaving magic.
other sites to use: Shelling tips , shell hunting in Texas , Where and when to find shells
Note: some shells match certain moon phases! Do extra research before using, and make sure the ones you're taking aren't still alive or home to a hermit crab! that can be a miniature trouble! especially if the snail inside is possibly poisonous or venomous.

AFRICAN HISTORY OF HARPOON FISHING
Fishing is an ancient practice in Africa, dating back 100,000 years, when modern humans started moving into coastal environments. The remains of thousands of fish bones and shellfish from sites on the southern African coastline dating to the Middle Stone Age testify to its antiquity. At the same time that human populations in Africa were developing more sophisticated terrestrial hunting technologies, they were also acquiring innovative and productive fishing and riverine hunting skills. Humans in Central Africa used some of the earliest barbed points, like this harpoon point, to spear huge prehistoric catfish weighing as much as 68 kg (150 lb)–enough to feed 80 people for two days. Later, humans used harpoons to hunt large, fast marine mammals
Archaeological research has shown that aquatic environments have been exploited for both subsistence and cultural purposes for tens of thousands of years. The Semliki harpoon, also known as the Katanda harpoon, refers to complex harpoon heads carved from bone. It is from an archaeologic site on the Semliki River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) which dates back 90,000 years. It seemed to substantiate that fishing and an “aquatic civilization” was likely in the region across eastern and northern Africa during the wetter climatic conditions of the early to mid-Holocene, as shown by other evidence at the lakeshore site of Ishango.
The site is littered with catfish bones and the harpoons are the size to catch adult catfish, so investigators suspect the fisherman came to the site every year “to catch giant catfish.” It is unlikely that the harpoons are much different from those used today (see reference for photos). The archaeologic site coincides with the range of the Efé Pygmies, which have been shown by mitochondrial DNA analyses to be one of the oldest races still existing on earth.
A project exploring the role of East Africa in the evolution of modern humans has amassed the largest and most diverse collection of prehistoric bone harpoons ever assembled from the area. The collection offers clues about the behaviour and technology of prehistoric hunter-gatherers. "The area around Lake Turkana is extraordinarily rich not just in fossils, but also in artefacts used to exploit the ecology of the area. In the case of aquatic resources from the lake, these artefacts are often harpoons or points made from bone. The harpoons range in date from around 13,000 years ago – late in the geological epoch known as the Pleistocene – to around 6,000 years ago, the middle of the current geological epoch known as the Holocene. The researchers used radiocarbon and other dating techniques on samples of shell and sediment surrounding the harpoons to place them in time.
Carved in wood, is the the figure of king Tut gessoed and gilded. The ends of the painted papyrus skiff were also gilded. The harpoon which the king holds in his right hand and the coiled rope in his left are made of bronze, like the slippers he wears, the uraeus (serpent) attached to his crown, and the inlaid eyebrows.
On the walls of many private tombs both before and during the New Kingdom, the owner is often shown on a small raft fowling or fishing in the marshes. While the action illustrated by this statue is similar, the king hunts neither fish nor fowl, but the hippopotamus, the animal sacred to the god Seth. Like many other objects in the tomb, it relates to the traditional spirituality restored by Tutankhamun

Hi! What kind of goods, do you think, Water Tribes are likely to export and import? North and South comic tried to make a story of oil discovery at the South Pole, but I hope they are not going to end up an oil-export based economy. Would they export furs? I am pretty sure rich folk in FN and EK would want the furs, but is it something Water Tribes be willing to do? Would they export ice (or waterbending services?) And what would they import, not just as luxury items, but as a staple?
Ooh, this is an interesting one.
Ice as an export makes a lot of sense. Everyone wants to keep food cold to slow down spoilage, and chilling food as a means to prep it allows for all kinds of methods. I'm sure waterbenders would make quick work of cutting ice into pieces and keeping it frozen throughout the shipping process and perhaps even installing the ice into cellars for customers.
Furs as they are, i'm not so sure about, as the qualities that make polar furs great clothes for polar regions can make them difficult to handle outside of those regions. My mom's rabbit skin parka can only be worn at -30°F or colder, otherwise, it's uncomfortably warm, and that's taking the stitching being worn out in places into consideration. Fur scraps to use as trim could be a good market. Baleen would be a hot commodity in a pre-plastic world. It can't be melted and poured into a mold like plastic, but it is a waterproof, sturdy material with plenty of give and with enough time and applied heat, will mold to the shape you bend it into. (For those unfamiliar with the details of corsetry: this is why baleen was used for corset bones. Not only did they offer sturdy, yet not brittle or shatter-prone support, but the baleen sewn into the corset would mold to the wearer's body due to their body heat, providing a custom fit once it was broken into or "seasoned.") Ivory, both fresh and fossilized, is easily carved, smooth to the touch, and has an elegant look. With any number of uses and the difficulty of obtaining it (fossilized ivory especially can only really be obtained through luck because it washes up in tidal pools after something someone dropped ages in the water), i imgine artisans of the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation would pay a lot for it.
Traditional art is another possible market, and craftsmanship has always been a means to bring in other resources irl, even before circumpolar peoples were pulled into a cash economy. To this day, a lot of money is found in selling traditional art of traditional material, including ivory, baleen, bone, antler, fur and skin, intestine, shell, sinew, nephrite jade, soapstone, grass, and driftwood. This art could come in the form of jewellery, sculptures and figurines, scrimshaw, miniature models of things like boats or dance masks, slippers, spoons, tobacco pipes, waterproof garments and wrappings of intestine and specialized sinew stitching, baskets, boxes, hairpins, traditional toys and more. People generally like to fill their homes with beautiful things, and expensive ones if they have the money for it. One can easily imagine nobility or even royalty spending a pretty penny commissioning, say, baleen scrimshaw illustrations of classical literary works for a library well-decorated with unique art from around the world and none of it captures darkness and light quite the same, or a matching necklace and earrings set of nephrite and shell beads to gift a beloved wife because no other material quite compares to the light in her eyes, or a likeness in memory of a father known for his strength and tenacity carved in ivory; a material so dangerous to come by, it takes at least four men to harvest a body that yeilds two pieces.
If they have oil, they might also have gold, but i don't think that's really all that much better in terms of exploiting indigenous peoples and damaging the environment and local ecosystems.
For services, i've mentioned before ways waterbenders fleeing the Fire Nation's genocidal raids in the south pole might make a living in the Earth Kingdom without giving away that they're waterbenders. I said stonecutting (carrying grit in the water makes it even easier) and drying grain for farmers (typically dried laying it out in the sun, if not done thoroughly enough you get mold). I could also see dehydrating fruit and veggies and mushrooms to keep them perserved getting an income, as well as laundry services. Canonically the best healers in the world are women from the north pole. Waterbending aids them in spiritual healing and perhaps physical healing as well, given that so much of wellness involves keeping body fluids where they need to be. One could charge a heavy fee for those skills and services.
A word about luxury imports vs imported houshold staples; what falls into which cattegory is subject to change as it's entirely based on how affordable and available various items are. For example, is something as ubiquitous and notable an aspect of the universe as tea affordable for all social classes? What about sugar? Foreign spices? Candles? Paper and ink? For simplicity's sake, I'll be going off of what is canonically or easily assumed to be available and frequently used in-universe as well as items imported into Native villages irl.
Rice is an easy starch to eat and store. I can easily see it used to suppliment a water tribe diet. Tea could be helpful for its caffeine, though it is not necessary especially if we assume they have fireweed to process into ivan chai which has B vitamins which also give's one energy.
With vegetables, buying them is a lot easier than buying soil, keeping it warm, and growing what they can. Potatoes are always a good idea, being a hearty starch with a lot of nutrients. Onions and garlic are quite flavorful. Fruit could also supplement nutrients that are hard to come by in such a meat-heavy and low-fiber diet. They preserve well dried or in jam and their sweetness makes them easier for children to eat. Dairy and soy products would be helpful with calcium deficiencies. Given their infamous fickleness, however, i think fresh fruits and dairy would be considered higher end items to be used up quickly before they spoil.
My heart wants them to have pilot bread/hardtack since unlike the other starches mentioned, it requires no prep to eat, and if it's packaged in a long, dark blue box with a sailor on it, so much the better. Vinegar and sugar are both flavorful and allow for more preservation techniques than freezing and fermenting alone, and so would be optimal to have. Whether or not they would buy up yeast and flower depends on if you think the Water Tribes would incorporate bread into their cultures, which i'm all for but some may think unnecessary. I don't think alcohol would serve any purpose but for sterilization, and if i'm honest, Water Tribesmen drinking gets a little too close to racist jokes for me to recommend writing no questions asked. Ginger and black pepper would probably be the most favored spices due to how compatible they would be to the flavor profiles of local foods, but other spices might also be common too.
Paper for ink and ink for paper would be a good investment for letterwriting and ordering specific goods rather than hoping a merchant will offer them. Theoricically, parchment and ink could be made domestically of skins and soot, respectively, but I'm not sure if that would be the more efficient use of resources or if imported paper and ink would be preferable.
When irl circumpolar people assimilated, the textile industry favored cotton, and so sturdy and often printed cottons were the defualt fabric brought into the villages. Without the circumstances leading to that (cotton plantations run on brutal slave labor and specific technological advancements that made it much easier to process) i think the fabic of choice would be linen. Linen is a much more low-maintinence and fiber to produce and its low elasticity makes it very durable. The antimicrobial properties make it a no brainer for medical uses (bandages, patient bedding, healer's smocks, just for a few examples) and the moisture wicking and cooling qualities would make it very attractive to a wife tending her oil lamp in a house that prioritizes insulation over ventilation or a hardworking hunter sweating into thick furs. Wool, with the way it insulates even when wet, might also be considered a good enough investment to import. Whether or not they have any sort of way to raise fiber domestically (some kind of fantasy musk-oxen, perhaps) is up for interpretation as canon doesn't seem to suggest one way or the other.
As far as for building and housewares: lumber and metal goods. Pots used by the irl Inupiat were typically carved of wood and water was boiled in them with hot stones rather than placing them over fire, ulu blades were traditionally sharpened slate, and arrowheads were shaped of bone or antler. Even scrap iron and steel can be repurposed for tools and art, making a good resource to have and probably a good deal for both sides of the trade. Wood was used irl, not always as the main building material, but almost always as a frame and typically for flooring. Storage caches were also typically wood as well as the stilt houses of King Island. Often the main source was driftwood as the environment and wildlife dependant lifestyle of the Inupiat made growing trees for lumber at such a scale close to impossible. A supply of well-treated, sturdy lumber would be good to have and use. If any of this was taken into consideration when Jianzhu was asking for a loan to get lumber to the Southern Water Tribe in Rise of Kyoshi, then it would come off a lot less like "the poor savages need our advanced wood boat technology" and more genuinely altruistic.

For the one word prompts-- Ember with Tabby!
Thanks so much for the submission! :) I went a little overboard - four pages on Word - but I had so much fun thinking this one up that I don't care lol. Please enjoy!
(One Word Prompts 3)
(Space Interns Masterpost)
“Fossilized egg of chóvolisaurus regina, extinct species from planet Brigid.”
The exhibit’s label was perfectly clear, but it was wrong. Tabby knew the difference between a fossil and a live egg – and the egg sitting in case in the museum was live.
So she stole it.
Tabby hurried back to Aegis and hid in her cabin.
It’s about two feet long, Tabby mused, and it’s got octagonal ridges. She pulled several bestiary tablets from her shelves and started swiping through pages of eggs. The shell is black, with silver and gold lines… Tabby ran her finger over the egg. Ridges are sharp to the touch, but not uniform…
When the rest of the crew returned from the museum, someone knocked on Tabby’s door.
“Don’t come in – I’m sick,” Tabby lied.
“Oh.” Glen’s voice was muffled on the other side. “You want me to get Slipper?”
“No – I just need some sleep,” Tabby insisted. Glen seemed satisfied with this answer and left, and Tabby returned to her research.
Maybe I need to stop going by species, and start narrowing it down by galaxy… Tabby went to her shelves and picked up several more tablets.
Several hours later, there was urgent knocking on her door.
“Ugh – what now?” Tabby demanded.
“Tabby, open up. It’s me.” Blare’s voice was low.
Tabby rolled her eyes and didn’t look up from her tablet. “I’m sick.”
“I know about the egg.”
Tabby froze. “What?”
“I know about the fucking egg – now will you let me in?”
Tabby got to her feet and crossed the room to unlock the door. It slid open to reveal stern-faced Blare on the other side.
Blare entered without invitation. “Where is it?” she demanded.
Tabby slid the door closed and locked it. “How did you –“
“The museum just went on lockdown over it.” Blare’s eyes fell on the egg, wrapped in plush blankets beside a pile of tablets. She stepped closer and knelt beside it. “How in Aries’s name did you do it?”
Tabby folded her arms. “I have my ways.”
Blare pressed her fingers to her forehead. “And I’m assuming you had a good reason?”
“It’s a live egg,” Tabby explained, “not a fossil.”
Blare sighed. She hung her head.
“It belongs in its natural habitat,” Tabby continued. “I’m taking it home.”
“Which is…where, exactly?”
Tabby uncrossed her arms and placed her hands on her hips. “I’ve narrowed it down to four galaxies, thank you,” she said crossly.
Blare spun around. “Quit being so defensive!”
“Then back off!”
“I’m trying to help you!” Blare snapped.
Tabby recoiled. “You’re what?”
“Yes!” Blare said. “I’m trying to help you. What are the four galaxies?”
“Um…” Tabby rattled off the names. “But – hold on. What do you mean, you’re trying to help?”
“Believe it or not, Tabby, I trust your judgment,” Blare said. She turned back to the egg. “You wouldn’t do something like this without a good reason. I’ll help you see it through.” She folded her legs and picked up a tablet. “How have you been determining its origin?”
Tabby took a few moments in silence, then she joined Blare on the floor beside the egg. “Well, this is what I’ve been doing…” She leaned over and swiped the screen on the tablet in Blare’s hands, explaining her reasoning. Blare nodded as Tabby spoke, interjecting only occasionally. Once Tabby finished her explanation, Blare got to work.
An hour passed. Blare and Tabby leaned against Tabby’s bed, swiping through tablets and comparing notes in easy silence.
“Oh, what about Horus?” Blare asked eventually.
“Huh?”
“Horus – it’s a planet of avian people.”
Tabby hummed. “Good thought. But no, it’s definitely a reptilian egg – so it’s got to be from a planet that…” She trailed off, lowering her tablet.
“What?” Blare asked.
“…What if it’s…not from a planet?” Tabby asked. “What if it’s from –“
“A moon? Or an asteroid?” Blare suggested eagerly.
An hour of research later, they reached a conclusion. Blare departed to the bridge to set a course, and soon Aegis arrived at the center of an asteroid belt. Brando, Slipper, and Glen looked bewildered. “What are we doing here?” Brando asked.
“Don’t worry about it,” Blare and Tabby answered at the same time. Then Blare pointed to Glen and said, “You can tractor us onto an asteroid, right?”
He could. Glen sent Tabby and Blare onto the surface of the nearest asteroid – an oddly-shaped clump sporting deep cracks.
The moment Tabby’s feet touched down on the asteroid, triumph made her grin.
“This is it,” she said. “We’re definitely in the right place.” She tucked the egg under her arm and started walking.
“Where are you going?” Blare asked.
Over her shoulder, Tabby said, “I’m finding a nest.”
Blare hurried to catch up as Tabby started to climb a slope. “How do you know we’re in the right place?”
Tabby nodded to a nearby crevice. “Look at the indents: octagonal.” She patted the egg. “Our little friend has octagonal ridges. This is definitely a nesting asteroid.”
At the top of the hill, they found a wide crater.
“Could this be a nest?” Blare suggested.
“Maybe. Do you see scorch marks?”
“Scorch marks?” Blare echoed. She slid down into it and held a hand out to support Tabby.
“Yeah,” Tabby said, taking Blare’s hand. “If I’m right about this, then this species incubates its young by breathing fire on them.” She stepped down into the crater. “Come on, let’s look for cinders.”
They ventured forward. After half a minute, Blare noticed the first scorch mark. It was faint, but when Blare knelt to examine it, she determined it was ash.
They saw more singed stone as they carried on. As they approached the center, they also noticed fragments of eggshells.
“They match yours,” Blare remarked.
At the center of the crater, they found a raised bed of stacked rocks. The entire pile was brushed with black soot.
“That’s got to be a nest,” Blare said. Tabby nodded. “So, the egg will be safe here?”
“Yep,” Tabby said. “This is a communal species, so any nesting adult will likely take it.” She stepped forward and held the egg up to her face. “All right, little one. Glad you’re home.” She knelt beside the nest of cindery stone. She laid the egg down carefully, turning it slightly so that it didn’t wobble.
A staggered bellow echoed through the crater. Tabby and Blare spun around to see something magnificent standing at the top of the crater’s ridge.
“No way,” Tabby said. “It’s a dragon. It’s actually a dragon!”
The dragon leapt down, unfolding its wings. Iridescent black scales shimmered in the starlight as the creature glided toward them. Its scythe-like tail steered it in a gentle curve, and its wings tilted to bring it to a halt.
It touched down on the surface of the asteroid and trotted forward a few steps, towering over Tabby and Blare.
Tabby saw the scales on its throat start to glow gold. “Oh, fuck,” she said, scrambling to her feet. She rushed over to Blare and pulled her away from the nest.
The dragon’s jaws parted, and a jet of blue flames burst from its mouth. Blare couldn’t help but gasp as the fire engulfed the egg on the nest.
Tabby and Blare watched, mystified, as the egg withstood the heat. Tabby could feel sweat beading on her nose and forehead.
After about twenty seconds, the dragon snapped its mouth shut and drew its head back as the last of the blue flames licked at the egg.
The egg twitched. Its ridges began glowing gold.
“Is it hatching?” Blare asked eagerly.
A scraping sound came from the inside of the egg. The adult dragon sat and curled its tail over its claws, a satisfied purr rumbling in its throat.
“I think so,” Tabby said. She dropped to one knee to get a better look.
There was a pecking sound, and the top of the egg snapped off. A tiny head poked out, parting its jaws to reveal rows of serrated fangs. The hatching dragon croaked, then coughed – and a spray of embers burst from its mouth.
Tabby’s eyes gleamed. “Look at you!” she breathed. “Oh, you’re beautiful.”
The adult dragon leaned forward and nuzzled the hatchling.
Blare placed a hand on Tabby’s shoulder. “We should probably go,” she said.
“Yeah, you’re right.” Tabby got to her feet, stepping back without taking her eyes from the dragons.
The adult turned its gaze on Tabby. It bowed its head and blinked slowly.
“Oh, you’re welcome,” Tabby said, blinking in return. Then she looked at the hatchling. “You live a good life, okay?” she said. Then she tore her eyes from them, turned her back, and she and Blare walked away.

Stings
Bare-handed, I hand the combs. The man in white smiles, bare-handed, Our cheesecloth gauntlets neat and sweet, The throats of our wrists brave lilies. He and I
Have a thousand clean cells between us, Eight combs of yellow cups, And the hive itself a teacup, White with pink flowers on it. With excessive love I enameled it
Thinking ‘Sweetness, sweetness.’ Brood cells grey as the fossils of shells Terrify me, they seem so old. What am I buying, wormy mahogany? Is there any queen at all in it?
If there is, she is old, Her wings torn shawls, her long body Rubbed of its plush--- Poor and bare and unqueenly and even shameful. I stand in a column
Of winged, unmiraculous women, Honey-drudgers. I am no drudge Though for years I have eaten dust And dried plates with my dense hair.
And seen my strangeness evaporate, Blue dew from dangerous skin. Will they hate me, These women who only scurry, Whose news is the open cherry, the open clover?
It is almost over. I am in control. Here is my honey-machine, It will work without thinking, Opening, in spring, like an industrious virgin
To scour the creaming crests As the moon, for its ivory powders, scours the sea. A third person is watching. He has nothing to do with the bee-seller or with me. Now he is gone
In eight great bounds, a great scapegoat. Here is his slipper, here is another, And here the square of white linen He wore instead of a hat. He was sweet,
The sweat of his efforts a rain Tugging the world to fruit. The bees found him out, Molding onto his lips like lies, Complicating his features.
They thought death was worth it, but I Have a self to recover, a queen. Is she dead, is she sleeping? Where has she been, With her lion-red body, her wings of glass?
Now she is flying More terrible than she ever was, red Scar in the sky, red comet Over the engine that killed her--- The mausoleum, the wax house.

Bare-handed, I hand the combs. The man in white smiles, bare-handed, Our cheesecloth gauntlets neat and sweet, The throats of our wrists brave lilies. He and I
Have a thousand clean cells between us, Eight combs of yellow cups, And the hive itself a teacup, White with pink flowers on it, With excessive love I enameled it
Thinking ‘Sweetness, sweetness’. Brood cells gray as the fossils of shells Terrify me, they seem so old. What am I buying, wormy mahogany? Is there any queen at all in it?
If there is, she is old, Her wings torn shawls, her long body Rubbed of its plush— Poor and bare and unqueenly and even shameful.
Now she is flying More terrible than she ever was, red Scar in the sky, red comet Over the engine that killed her— The mausoleum, the wax house.

The Goddess Of Love
You'll find her in the frothy waves of the ocean; which fall and rise ebulliently with the most minuscule draught of wind, You'll find her in the silken conglomerate of pearly clouds; floating smoothly in the sky, You'll find her in the mesmerizing rose petals; having an evanescent coat of scintillating dew drops, You'll find her in the vivaciously swirling trees; shedding their leaves sporadically with changing seasons, You'll find her in the fleet footed nimble rabbit; prowling innocuously around the farm with its abnormally round eyes, You'll find her in the dazzling sunrays; which fall incessantly on the earth until murky dusk, You'll find her in the queenly peacock; spreading its feathers to a full blossom at the onset of torrential monsoons, You'll find her in the golden fish whistling adroitly through deep ocean waters; incorporating an army of incongruous bubbles in its path, You'll find her in the winged birds soaring high in the sky; chirping in animation at the unveiling of twilight, You'll find her in the shimmering spires of the historical monument; which glisten profoundly under natural light, You'll find her in the mystical reptile; slithering its way non-invasively through the marshy swamps, You'll find her in the flocculent buds of freshly born cotton; sprawled in incoherent heaps on the soil, You'll find her in the milky peninsula of moon; nestling in equanimity with deleterious wisps of air, You'll find her in the rubicund complexioned radish; with nodules of ingratiating brown projecting in abundance, You'll find her in the viciously fluttering web of spider; having an intricate network of finely intermingled threads, You'll find her in the boisterously bouncing frog; croaking innocently in puddles of tainted water, You'll find her in the newly born infant; wailing out uninhibitedly towards its mother, You'll find her in the rustically humming bumblebees; which were unrelentingly busy round the clock in producing tones of sweet honey, You'll find her incarcerated in the hard shell of coconut; wherein lies the succulent layer of ravishing pulp, You'll find her in grizzly bears inhabiting the mountains; traversing harmlessly with several flakes of snow on their backs, You'll find her in the yellow lilies; having vivid shoots of red sprouting from its oval shaped core, You'll find her in the silver crested dolphin diving in and out of the undulating sea; spraying gallon of tingling droplets as an aftermath, You'll find her in tubules of delectable mushroom; protruding in perfect harmony from the moist land, You'll find her in crystalline water evacuated from the belly of earth; ubiquitously quenching insatiable urges of thirst, You'll find her in the solitary oasis lying forlorn in the desert; yet scintillating magnificently in daylight, You'll find her in globules of lukewarm milk; oozing profusely from the swollen teats of mother cow, You'll find her in thunderous snores permeating the stillness of night; wafting from the mouth of an individual in deep slumber, You'll find her in the persevering camel; impeccably traversing through scorching deserts; inadvertently moving its hunched back, You'll find her in blood red cherries; ingratiatingly dangling from branches of the tall tree, You'll find her in the droplets of salty sweat trickling down ones persona; after a good days-tenacious work, You'll find her in the profoundly blushing cheek; which got aggrandized by a frivolous poke to the ribs, You'll find her in the tender palm of a fairy; with infinite lines terminating into incommensurate forks, You'll find her in the belligerent eyes of a solider; unafraid to sacrifice his life for the nation, You'll find her in the pouch bellied kangaroo; racing at swashbuckling speeds through the dense forests, You'll find her in the conglomerate of green leaves; cascading from the roof of the hollow mountain cavern, You'll find her in the bubbling broth being made in freezing winter; providing some respite from the irrevocable cold, You'll find her in the nocturnal shadows; diligently staying riveted to the silhouettes of their masters, You'll find her in the enamoring mass of black hair; settling down with stupendous grace on the angular shoulder, You'll find her in the virgin oyster embedded at fathomless depths of the ocean; untouched the slightest by the adulterated ambience of land, You'll find her in the grandiloquent inscriptions of the palace; the resplendent fountains rising high in the air, You'll find her in the cow dung cakes adhering to indigenous village walls; shielding the dwelling from acrimonious rays of the sun, You'll find her in the philanthropic nurse at the hospital; who altruistically serves all those in pain and bizarre affliction, You'll find her in the spongy blades of grass; thoroughly cushioning the skull from a direct and unscrupulous contact with the stony ground, You'll find her in the vibrant shades of root color; which the artist uses to inundate his barren sheet of canvas, You'll find her in rotund bar of brown chocolate; which impregnates the tongue with an irrefutably sweet taste, You'll find her in melting white water streams; gushing incessantly from the summit of the snow clad mountains at the onset of steaming summer, You'll find her in finely sliced stem of coriander; which imparts substantial taste to the most lackluster of food, You'll find her embossed in the sacrosanct scriptures of religious books; all that literature written which circumvents immortal peace, You'll find her invincibly imprisoned in lips, which smile; generating the essence of life in the nondescript atmosphere, You'll find her embedded in incongruous recesses of the soil; harboring a fleet of terrestrial organisms in their cozy warmth, You'll find her squirting as untainted latex; gradually extruding from the stalk of pliable rubber tree, You'll find her residing in the glittering harp; whose chords produced a mystically melodious tune when dexterously struck, You'll find her incorporated in the furry mattress; with a jugglery of woolen threads extruding out, You'll find her embodied in the knotted handkerchief; tossed exuberantly in the air; tickling the cluster of eyelashes as it fell, You'll find her in the congenial glowworm philandering through the bushes; emitting an iridescent radiance to illuminate the night, You'll find her in the hapless slippers of the old grandmother; chivalrously distributing sweets amongst young children; recounting to them innumerable tales of the obsolete past, You'll find her in long trousers of flannel cloth; stitched with fibers of simplicity and care, You'll find her in pots chiseled of rustic clay; molded articulately with bohemian tribal palms, You'll find her in twinkling stars scattered to unfathomable distances in the cosmos; glistening amicably in the murderous blackness, You'll find her in the sapphire veils sequestering the woman's eyes; obliterating her from heinous evil prevalent in the world, You'll find her in the century old fossil impregnated with a pellucid demeanor; silently yet effusively portraying the tale of existence before a thousand years, You'll find her in the parachute bobbing indolently under the breeze; gently hovering down on the earth, You'll find her in crusty flakes of snow; affably clinging to the glass pane window of the dwelling, You'll find her in the cheeks of a newly born offspring; the scarlet tinge they acquire when he profusely cries, You'll find her in the bedraggled beard of an old man; nictitating enchantingly with the clean wind, You'll find her in the sacerdotal bells dangling low in the temple; giving out mesmerizing sounds when conscientiously strung, You'll find her in vibrant colors of the gorgeous rainbow; announcing its presence when water tumbled from the sky in dazzling brightness, You'll find her in the saliently thick veins of emerald green betel leaf; diffusing a ravishing aroma when meticulously chewed, You'll find her in the heavily dunloped toddler pram; which sways rhythmically; thereby putting the infant into a celestial calm, You'll find her in trunk of the mammoth elephant; inhaling bucket fulls of water from the river; sprinkling the same with rambunctious noises over the unsuspecting parrots, You'll find her protuberant neck of a pigeon; swelling it all the more blatantly with the arrival of winter, You'll find her in drifting weeds of algae; engendering a flurry of incoherent ripples on the surface of the forlorn stream, You'll find her in pot bellied ducks; discordantly croaking with their flaccid and yellow beaks hoisting small fish from the lake, You'll find her in the sneeze that turbulently hisses past slimy nostrils; transforming the supremely sophisticated into natural humans, You'll find her in all items of edible food; satiating the hunger of millions of bowels perishing due to opprobrious poverty, You'll find her in the juicy watermelon; yielding tantalizingly red water when astutely squeezed, You'll find her in the bushy squirrel scampering up and down the tree; onerously gnawing at chunks of stolen jackfruit, You'll find her in the mischievous faced chimpanzee; perfectly emulating the actions of his civilized counterparts on the bustling street, You'll find her in the cup of steaming filter coffee; which grants loads of reprieve from the insurmountable cold, You'll find her in the compassionate mascara circumventing the eyes; granting them with that thoroughly effeminate look which they vehemently desired, You'll find her in all those benevolent leaders; who chalk egalitarian policies for both the affluent and indigent alike, You'll find her in the tears which sporadically flow down the cheek; which culminate at instants of astronomical felicity, You'll find her in sparkling waterfalls plummeting down the slope; creating an ingratiating gurgling sound after kissing the earth, You'll find her in appetizing candy cones overflowing with sweet raspberry; instantly pacifying even the most pernicious of personalities, You'll find her in the jagged oars of a boat; securely maneuvering the bleary eyed passengers to the shore, You'll find her in raw chunks of mud; which discharge an exquisite redolence soon after the first spell of rain, You'll find her in plain strings which the sister ties to her brother on his wrist; symbolizing a perpetual bond of unbiased love, You'll find her in the soft toys that a child incessantly plays with; fomenting unprecedented smiles on his lips, You'll find her in underground cloistered tunnels; which provide unsurpassable reprieve to millions during times of pugnacious war, You'll find her in the nascent seed; which later gives birth to the gigantic sized tree, You'll find her in nostalgic memories of the past; making an adult reminiscent about his boisterous childhood, You'll find her in the pulp of ripened banana; producing a fabulous flavor when masticated, You'll find her in every incommensurate footprint on this earth; depicting the presence of a tangibly breathing entity, You'll find her in the blood circulating through your veins; instilling the energy to exist with the unfurling of each second, You'll find her in the eyes of your beloved; prompting you to audaciously leap into the sea of adventure, You'll find her in every heart throbbing beside you; intensely reinvigorating the spirit to uninhibitedly live, And you didn't need to spend a single penny to purchase her; a moment to applaud her; for all you needed to do was to profusely blend with nature and humanity; and you'll find her automatically, For she was none other than the supremely omnipresent 'GODDESS OF LOVE'.

Lobsters live up to an estimated 45 to 50 years in the wild, although determining age is difficult.[10] In 2012, a report was published describing how growth bands in calcified regions of the eyestalk or gastric mill in shrimps, crabs and lobsters could be used to measure growth and mortality in decapod crustaceans.[11] Without such a technique, a lobster's age is estimated by size and other variables; this new knowledge "could help scientists better understand the population and assist regulators of the lucrative industry".[12]Research suggests that lobsters may not slow down, weaken or lose fertility with age, and that older lobsters may be more fertile than younger lobsters. This longevity may be due to telomerase, an enzyme that repairs long repetitive sections of DNA sequences at the ends of chromosomes, referred to as telomeres. Telomerase is expressed by most vertebrates during embryonic stages, but is generally absent from adult stages of life.[13] However, unlike most vertebrates, lobsters express telomerase as adults through most tissue, which has been suggested to be related to their longevity.[14][15][16] Lobster longevity is limited by their size. Moulting requires metabolic energy and the larger the lobster, the more energy is needed; 10 to 15% of lobsters die of exhaustion during moulting, while in older lobsters, moulting ceases and the exoskeleton degrades or collapses entirely leading to death.[17][18]Lobsters, like many other decapod crustaceans, grow throughout life and are able to add new muscle cells at each moult.[19] Lobster longevity allows them to reach impressive sizes. According to Guinness World Records, the largest lobster ever caught was in Nova Scotia, Canada, weighing 20.15 kilograms (44.4 lb).[20][21]Lobsters are invertebrates with a hard protective exoskeleton.[4] Like most arthropods, lobsters must moult to grow, which leaves them vulnerable. During the moulting process, several species change colour. Lobsters have 10 walking legs; the front three pairs bear claws, the first of which are larger than the others.[5] Although lobsters are largely bilaterally symmetrical like most other arthropods, some generapossess unequal, specialised claws.Eyestalk of a lobsterLobster anatomy includes the cephalothorax which fuses the head and the thorax, both of which are covered by a chitinous carapace, and the abdomen. The lobster's head bears antennae, antennules, mandibles, the first and second maxillae, and the first, second, and third maxillipeds. Because lobsters live in murky environments at the bottom of the ocean, they mostly use their antennae as sensors. The lobster eye has a reflective structure above a convex retina. In contrast, most complex eyes use refractive ray concentrators (lenses) and a concave retina.[6] The abdomen includes swimmerets and its tail is composed of uropods and the telson.Lobsters, like snails and spiders, have blue blood due to the presence of hemocyanin, which contains copper.[7] In contrast, vertebrates and many other animals have red blood from iron-rich hemoglobin. Lobsters possess a green hepatopancreas, called the tomalley by chefs, which functions as the animal's liver and pancreas.[8]Lobsters of the family Nephropidae are similar in overall form to a number of other related groups. They differ from freshwater crayfish in lacking the joint between the last two segments of the thorax,[9] and they differ from the reef lobsters of the family Enoplometopidae in having full claws on the first three pairs of legs, rather than just one.[9] The distinctions from fossil families such as the Chilenophoberidaeare based on the pattern of grooves on the carapace.[9]Lobsters comprise a family (Nephropidae, sometimes also Homaridae) of large marine crustaceans.
Lobsters have long bodies with muscular tails, and live in crevices or burrows on the sea floor. Three of their five pairs of legs have claws, including the first pair, which are usually much larger than the others. Highly prized as seafood, lobsters are economically important, and are often one of the most profitable commodities in coastal areas they populate.[2] Commercially important species include two species of Homarus (which looks more like the stereotypical lobster) from the northern Atlantic Ocean, and scampi (which looks more like a shrimp, or a "mini lobster") – the Northern Hemisphere genus Nephrops and the Southern Hemisphere genus Metanephrops. Although several other groups of crustaceans have the word "lobster" in their names, the unqualified term "lobster" generally refers to the clawed lobsters of the family Nephropidae.[3] Clawed lobsters are not closely related to spiny lobsters or slipper lobsters, which have no claws (chelae), or to squat lobsters. The closest living relatives of clawed lobsters are the reef lobsters and the three families of freshwater crayfish.
Lobsters are found in all oceans. They live on rocky, sandy, or muddy bottoms from the shoreline to beyond the edge of the continental shelf. They generally live singly in crevices or in burrows under rocks.
Lobsters are omnivores and typically eat live prey such as fish, mollusks, other crustaceans, worms, and some plant life. They scavenge if necessary, and are known to resort to cannibalism in captivity. However, when lobster skin is found in lobster stomachs, this is not necessarily evidence of cannibalism – lobsters eat their shed skin after moulting.[22] While cannibalism was thought to be nonexistent among wild lobster populations, it was observed in 2012 by researchers studying wild lobsters in Maine. These first known instances of lobster cannibalism in the wild are theorized to be attributed to a local population explosion among lobsters caused by the disappearance of many of the Maine lobsters' natural predators.[23]
In general, lobsters are 25–50 cm (10–20 in) long, and move by slowly walking on the sea floor. However, when they flee, they swim backward quickly by curling and uncurling their abdomens. A speed of 5 m/s (11 mph) has been recorded.[24] This is known as the caridoid escape reaction.
Symbiotic animals of the genus Symbion, the only member of the phylum Cycliophora, live exclusively on lobster gills and mouthparts.[25] Different species of Symbion have been found on the three commercially important lobsters of the North Atlantic Ocean – Nephrops norvegicus, Homarus gammarus, and Homarus americanus.[25]

Lobster recipes include lobster Newberg and lobster Thermidor. Lobster is used in soup, bisque, lobster rolls, and cappon magro. Lobster meat may be dipped in clarified butter, resulting in a heightened flavour. Cooks boil or steam live lobsters. When a lobster is cooked, its shell's colour changes from blue to orange because the heat from cooking breaks down a protein called crustacyanin, which suppresses the orange hue of the chemical astaxanthin, which is also found in the shell.[26]
According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the mean level of mercury in American lobster between 2005 and 2007 was 0.107 ppm.[27]
History[
edit
]
In North America, the American lobster did not achieve popularity until the mid-19th century, when New Yorkers and Bostonians developed a taste for it, and commercial lobster fisheries only flourished after the development of the lobster smack,[28] a custom-made boat with open holding wells on the deck to keep the lobsters alive during transport.[29] Prior to this time, lobster was considered a mark of poverty or as a food for indentured servants or lower members of society in Maine, Massachusetts, and the Canadian Maritimes. It has been suggested servants specified in employment agreements that they would not eat lobster more than twice per week, however there is no evidence for this.[30][31] Lobster was also commonly served in prisons, much to the displeasure of inmates.[32] American lobster was initially deemed worthy only of being used as fertilizer or fish bait, and until well into the 20th century, it was not viewed as more than a low-priced canned staple food.[33]
Grading[
edit
]See also:
Food grading
Caught lobsters are graded as new-shell, hard-shell, or old-shell, and because lobsters which have recently shed their shells are the most delicate, an inverse relationship exists between the price of American lobster and its flavour. New-shell lobsters, have paper-thin shells and a worse meat-to-shell ratio, but the meat is very sweet. However, the lobsters are so delicate, even transport to Boston almost kills them, making the market for new-shell lobsters strictly local to the fishing towns where they are offloaded. Hard-shell lobsters with firm shells, but with less sweet meat, can survive shipping to Boston, New York, and even Los Angeles, so they command a higher price than new-shell lobsters. Meanwhile, old-shell lobsters, which have not shed since the previous season and have a coarser flavour, can be air-shipped anywhere in the world and arrive alive, making them the most expensive. One seafood guide notes that an $8 lobster dinner at a restaurant overlooking fishing piers in Maine is consistently delicious, while "the eighty-dollar lobster in a three-star Paris restaurant is apt to be as much about presentation as flavor".[33]

Several methods are used for killing lobsters. The most common way of killing lobsters is by placing them live in boiling water, sometimes after having been placed in a freezer for a period of time. Another method is to split the lobster or sever the body in half lengthwise. Lobsters may also be killed or rendered insensate immediately before boiling by a stab into the brain (pithing), in the belief that this will stop suffering. However, a lobster's brain operates from not one but several ganglia and disabling only the frontal ganglion does not usually result in death.[34] The boiling method is illegal in some places, such as in Reggio Emilia, Italy, where offenders face fines up to €495.[35] Lobsters can be killed by electrocution prior to cooking, with one device, the CrustaStun, applying a 110-volt, 2 to 5 amp electrical charge to the animal.[36][37] The Swiss government banned boiling lobster live without stunning them first;[38] Since March 2018, lobsters being prepared in Switzerland need to be knocked out before they're put to death, or killed instantly. They'll also get other protections while in transit.[39][40]
The killing methods most likely to cause pain and distress are:[34]
Any procedures whereby the abdomen is separated from the thorax
The removal of tissue, flesh, or limbs while the crustacean is alive and fully conscious
Placing crustaceans in slowly heated water to the boiling point
Placing crustaceans directly into boiling water
Placing marine crustaceans in fresh water
Unfocused microwaving of the body as opposed to focal application to the head
Fishery and aquaculture[edit]
Main article:
Lobster fishing
Lobsters are caught using baited one-way traps with a colour-coded marker buoy to mark cages. Lobster is fished in water between 2 and 900 metres (1 and 500 fathoms), although some lobsters live at 3,700 metres (2,000 fathoms). Cages are of plastic-coated galvanised steel or wood. A lobster fisher may tend as many as 2,000 traps. Around year 2000, owing to overfishing and high demand, lobster aquaculture expanded.[41] As of 2008, no lobster aquaculture operation had achieved commercial success, mainly because lobsters eat each other (cannibalism) and the growth of the species is slow.[42]

Ramblings From An Alpaca Farm In South Wiltshire: April 2017
Tumblr media
Roger Resilient was up next, sadly, as I was in the ring virtually all day, Sue was working round getting the alpacas lined up for me and could not photograph Roger as he competed in his big class. Common readers could do not forget that this was to be the massive Patou v Popham clash, the battle of the brown boys. Unfortunately Gary's boys have fallen by the wayside, his final contender being bumped to fawn at the Futurity. Graciously Gary conceded defeat and Roger was able to focus. I have to say he seemed pretty much as good as he ever has as he went in, and bugger me he snaffled second place! I should say I am unable to remember who came first, I can't even remember who else was within the ring. My thoughts was on other issues. My thoughts was on the massive one. I may see Sue waiting within the holding area with the big boy. Van Diemen Qjori of Patou was about to make his first entry into a UK present ring. Further, alpacas eat much less per pound than similar species and their waste product is wanted as a pure, low odor fertilizer. Their gentle, playful demeanor makes them supreme for elevating herds, one cause why alpaca farms have become more prominent all around the world. The commonest garments made from alpacas are sweaters. With nominal care, they'll actually final a lifetime. The fiber used to make these sweaters is processed utterly naturally, with no Fun Things to do in Hampshire animals harmed. The tip product is hotter than wool, pleasantly smooth to the contact, and naturally hypoallergenic. Over the past 25 years, more and more alpaca garments have come into prominence. Shawls, scarves, gloves, and even slippers are actually quite frequent. Alpaca socks are effectively famous for their warmth, breatheability, and natural odor prevention properties. Very similar to cashmere, alpaca sweaters are identified for their years of durability. Maybe this is because of alpacas themselves being quite sturdy. Their native habitat, in mountainous Peru, is mostly harsh. These animals have thrived quite well despite difficult local weather and terrain, and are adaptable to other situations as nicely. Though there isn't any concrete proof, alpacas are thought to be the oldest surviving livestock species on the planet. And so, durability appears to be a typical theme, from the animals themselves to the products produced from their fleece. An ideal option to learn extra about alpacas and the clothing produced from their fleece is to go to an alpaca farm. A number of are situated in nearly each state within the U.S. Not solely will you gain a better appreciation for these wonderful animals, you may simply add to your wardrobe too!
Our subconscious however sees the message and catalogues it. Although it catalogues it whether the individual will observe it or not is one other question. If they are strong willed and robust minded then they aren't going to observe the message. If nevertheless they're weak and pliable they may go get a cola or some burgers and fries. It all depends upon the individual. Luckily for companies then umber of individuals that can really resist this message are few and much between. Many individuals are weak and pliable and don't concentrate to what's happening outdoors their own little world. Most corporations nonetheless stopped utilizing the messages as regular advertising will get the job completed successfully. Lets face it people aren't as sharp as they use to be. In closing determining how to make use of subliminal videos successfully is a ability that eludes many individuals. It's not really needed anymore though as people will purchase absolutely anything. Here in the United States, however, there are so few alpacas that, up until now, no financial incentive existed to market fleece past the niche markets of hand-spinners and weavers. The entire national clip (all the fleece collected in a yr in this country) is now about 50 tons, compared to Peru’s four,000 tons. A commercial mill may course of that quantity in three days. In consequence, there may be little motivation for American large mills geared for sheep’s wool to modify in any approach to accommodate this new product. Two things must occur to vary the minds of American giant mill owners. The number of alpacas in the United States has to increase dramatically (which it is on monitor for) and breeders must start to breed their inventory with an eye toward fleece quality. The Alpaca Fiber Cooperative of North America (AFCNA) was established in 1998 to help its members in amassing, processing and distributing their alpaca fiber. Fiber apart, cash can actually be made in the marketplace for breeding livestock since that market is far from saturated and enjoys a robust demand. A quantity of things assure future market progress.
Gary and Felicia Sanders welcome you to our family run farm in Cornwall. We've stud males, breeding females, pet and guard alpacas for sale. We satisfaction ourselves in the way in which we care for our alpacas. Our expertise has shown that the quieter the alpaca the simpler they're to handle. Because of this we guarantee a calm and enjoyable strategy to their administration. Our alpacas are dealt with often from delivery, they turn into accustomed to human interaction and noise. Guests usually comment on how settled and relaxed our alpacas seem. Now we have been breeding alpacas since 2002. Running a combined herd of a hundred and twenty huacaya and suri alpacas the farm permits us to mix our love for the animals with a centered approach in direction of breeding enchancment. We're striving to create a top quality alpaca with superior fibre characteristics and sound conformation. We welcome guests and might arrangefarm visits/alpaca introduction courses to fit your requirements. We have a purpose built alpaca centre.
Growing chicks to chickens is difficult work however is quite fulfilling, especially when you’re about to learn from it. Chickens do change so shortly. Within only a month, you would discover improvement. On the start of life they're just little slimy egg contents and the following factor you understand they can now chirp their way to the coop starting an entire new life - a life that’s self-sufficient and nevertheless, unbiased. Jumping off from three to six weeks previous, a chicken sheds off its fluffiness and replaces it with feathers that may turn out to be more mature. Combs and wattles will grow and switch to a deep crimson hue. If you are raising cockerels, what you name a younger rooster, they will attempt to crow. At the age of 21-25 weeks, pullets will lay their very first eggs. Pullets are the young hens. One characteristic of a pullet’s egg is that its shell is weak and small. HARI SREENIVASAN: Now to our NewsHour Shares, something that caught our eye, which may be of curiosity to you, too. Disabled animals typically need a serving to hand with a purpose to stroll again. One Virginia man dedicated his life to ensuring they get that much-wanted leg up. The NewsHour’s Julia Griffin explains. JULIA GRIFFIN: That hum of equipment filling this Northern Virginia workshop means Derrick Campana is difficult at work. DERRICK CAMPANA, CEO, Animal Ortho Care: This is among the more final steps in the fabrication course of. JULIA GRIFFIN: What he and his group are fabricating are synthetic limbs, not for humans, like many orthotists, however for equally rewarding patients. Campana is the one of the world’s go-to specialists for animal braces and prosthetics, a ardour that began greater than 12 years in the past. DERRICK CAMPANA: A veterinarian got here to my office, and she introduced a canine that wanted a prosthesis.
The Tyrannosaurus Rex is one of the famous extinct animals. He was the largest carnivorous land animal of all time, measuring forty-three feet long and sixteen and a half ft high, with a weight which will have approached seven tons. He had a huge skull (but a small brain), balanced by a long tail. His hind legs had been massive and powerful, but his forelimbs were very small and so they only had two digits on them. T. Rex fossils have been present in North America, and these date back to the last years of the Cretaceous Period. This was roughly sixty-five million years in the past. He was one of the final dinosaurs on earth before the extinction-causing occasion that befell all of the dinosaurs. There have been more than thirty fossil constructions unearthed that archaeologists identify as T. rex. Another fascinating mammal on the extinct animals list is the Quagga, which is a wild animal, half horse, half zebra. Not good, you want real stamina to flip by means of 42 pages of alpaca sites. So numerous measures were taken to improve this standing and we now pop up on or near the front web page most of the time, I nonetheless don’t perceive how it really works but it surely does. In actual fact I have simply had a look on Google and we're on the primary web page at the moment, fantastic! The website now gets in excess of fifty hits a day and the blog is read by folks from everywhere in the world. Critically, it is! I have a thingy on it which tells me where persons are that read it, how cool is that? So back to this raising cash malarkey. In 2007 we took on some alpacas from other small breeders (who wanted to stay small) and some from EP Cambridge (not a small breeder!) and marketed and offered them on their behalf.

The sun rose slowly, as if it wasn't sure it was worth all the effort. Another Disc day dawned, but very gradually, and this is why. When light encounters a strong magical field it loses ail sense of urgency. It slows right down. And on the Discworld the magic was embarrassingly strong, which meant that the soft yellow light of dawn flowed over the sleeping landscape like the caress of a gentle lover or, as some would have it, like golden syrup. It paused to fill up valleys. It piled up against mountain ranges. When it reached Cori Celesti, the ten mile spire of grey stone and green ice that marked the hub of the Disc and was the home of its gods, it built up in heaps until it finally crashed in great lazy tsunami as silent as velvet, across the dark landscape beyond. It was a sight to be seen on no other world. Of course, no other world was carried through the starry infinity on the backs of four giant elephants, who A'ere themselves perched on the shell of a giant turtle. His name – or Her name, according to another school of thought – was Great A'Tuin; he – or, as it might be, she – will not take a central role in what follows but it is vital to an understanding of the Disc that he – or she – is there, down below the mines and sea ooze and fake fossil bones put there by a Creator with nothing better to do than upset archeologists and give them silly ideas. Great A'Tuin the star turtle, shell frosted with frozen methane, pitted with meteor craters, and scoured with asteroidal dust. Great A'Tuin, with eyes like ancient seas and a brain the size of a continent through which thoughts moved like little glittering glaciers. Great A'Tuin of the great slow sad flippers and star-polished carapace, labouring through the galactic night under the weight of the Disc. As large as worlds. As old as Time. As patient as a brick. Actually, the philosophers have got it all wrong. Great A'Tuin is in fact having a great time. Great A'Tuin is the only creature in the entire universe that knows exactly where it is going. Of course, philosophers have debated for years about where Great A'Tuin might be going, and have often said how worried they are that they might never find out. They're due to find out in about two months. And then they're really going to worry . . . Something else that has long worried the more imaginative philosophers on the Disc is the question of Great A'Tuin's sex, and quite a lot of time and trouble has been spent in trying to establish it once and for all. In fact, as the great dark shape drifts past like an endless tortoiseshell hairbrush, the results of the latest effort are just coming into view. Tumbling past, totally out of control, is the bronze shell of the Potent Voyager, a sort of neolithic spaceship built and pushed over the edge by the astronomer-priests of Krull, which is conveniently situated on the very rim of the world and proves, whatever people say, that there is such a thing as a free launch. Inside the ship is Twoflower, the Disc's first tourist. He had recently spent some months exploring it and is now rapidly leaving it for reasons that are rather complicated but have to do with an attempt to escape from Krull. This attempt has been one thousand per cent successful. But despite all the evidence that he may be the Disc's last tourist as well, he is enjoying the view. Plunging along some two miles above him is Rincewind the wizard, in what on the Disc passes for a spacesuit. Picture it as a diving suit designed by men who have never seen the sea. Six months ago he was a perfectly ordinary failed wizard. Then he met Twoflower, was employed at an outrageous salary as his guide, and has spent most of the intervening time being shot at, terrorised, chased and hanging from high places with no hope of salvation or, as is now the case, dropping from high places. He isn't looking at the view because his past life keeps flashing in front of his eyes and getting in the way. He is learning why it is that when you put on a spacesuit it is vitally important not to forget the helmet. A lot more could be included now to explain why these two are dropping out of the world, and why Twoflower's Luggage, last seen desperately trying to follow him on hundreds of little legs, is no ordinary suitcase, but such questions take time and could be more trouble than they are worth. For example, it is said that someone at a party once asked the famous philosopher Ly Tin Weedle 'Why are you here?' and the reply took three years. What is far more important is an event happening way overhead, far above A'Tuin, the elephants and the rapidly-expiring wizard. The very fabric of time and space is about to be put through the wringer. The air was greasy with the distinctive feel of magic, and acrid with the smoke of candles made of a black wax whose precise origin a wise man wouldn't inquire about. There was something very strange about this room deep in the cellars of Unseen University, the Disc's premier college of magic. For one thing it seemed to have too many dimensions, not exactly visible, just hovering out of eyeshot. The walls were covered with occult symbols, and most of the floor was taken up by the Eightfold Seal of Stasis, generally agreed in magical circles to have all the stopping power of a well-aimed half brick. The only furnishing in the room was a lectern dark wood, carved into the shape of a bird – well, to be frank, into the shape of a winged thing it is probably best not to examine too closely – and on the lectern, fastened to it by a heavy chain covered in padlocks, was a book. A large, but not particularly impressive, book. Other books in the University's libraries had covers inlaid with rare jewels and fascinating wood, or bound with dragon skin. This one was just a rather tatty leather. It looked the sort of book described in library catalogues as 'slightly foxed', although it would be more honest to admit that it looked as though it had been badgered, wolved and possibly beared as well. Metal clasps held it shut. They weren't decorated, they were just very heavy – like the chain, which didn't so much attach the book to the lectern as tether it. They looked like the work of someone who had a pretty definite aim in mind, and who had spent most of his life making training harness for elephants. The air thickened and swirled. The pages of the book began to crinkle in a quite horrible, deliberate way, and blue light spilled out from between them. The silence of the room crowded in like a fist, slowly being clenched. Half a dozen wizards in their nightshirts were taking turns to peer in through the little grille in the door. No wizard could sleep with this sort of thing going on – the build-up of raw magic was rising through the university like a tide. 'Right,' said a voice. What's going on? And why wasn't I summoned?' Galder Weatherwax, Supreme Grand Conjuror of the Order of the Silver Star, Lord Imperial of the Sacred Staff, Eighth Level Ipsissimus and 304th Chancellor of Unseen University, wasn't simply an impressive sight even in his red nightshirt with the hand-embroidered mystic runes, even in his long cap with the bobble on, even with the Wee Willie Winkie candlestick in his hand. He even managed to very nearly pull it off in fluffy pompom slippers as well. Six frightened faces turned towards him. 'Um, you were summoned, lord,' said one of the under-wizards. 'That's why you're here,' he added helpfully. 'I mean why wasn't I summoned before?' snapped Galder, pushing his way to the grille. 'Um, before who, lord?' said the wizard. Galder glared at him, and ventured a quick glance through the grille. The air in the room was now sparkling with tiny flashes as dust motes incinerated in the flow of raw magic. The Seal of Stasis was beginning to blister and curl up at the edges. The book in question was called the Octavo and, quite obviously, it was no ordinary book. There are of course many famous books of magic. Some may talk of the Necrotelicomnicon, with its pages made of ancient lizard skin; some may point to the Book of Going Forth Around Elevenish, written by a mysterious and rather lazy Llamaic sect; some may recall that the Bumper Fun Grimoire reputedly contains the one original joke left in the universe. But they are all mere pamphlets when compared with the Octavo, which the Creator of the Universe reputedly left behind – with characteristic absent-mindedness – shortly after completing his major work. The eight spells imprisoned in its pages led a secret and complex life of their own, and it was generally believed that — Galder's brow furrowed as he stared into the troubled room. Of course, there were only seven spells now. Some young idiot of a student wizard had stolen a look at the book one day and one of the spells had escaped and lodged in his mind. No-one had ever managed to get to the bottom of how it had happened. What was his name, now? Winswand? Octarine and purple sparks glittered on the spine of the book. A thin curl of smoke was beginning to rise from the lectern, and the heavy metal clasps that held the book shut were definitely beginning to look strained. 'Why are the spells so restless?' said one of the younger wizards. Galder shrugged. He couldn't show it, of course, but he was beginning to be really worried. As a skilled eighth-level wizard he could see the half-imaginary shapes that appeared momentarily in the vibrating air, wheedling arid beckoning. In much the same way that gnats appear before a thunderstorm, really heavy build-ups of magic always attracted things from the chaotic Dungeon Dimensions – nasty Things, all misplaced organs and spittle, forever searching for any gap through which they might sidle into the world of men. [1] This had to be stopped. 'I shall need a volunteer,' he said firmly. There was a sudden silence. The only sound came from behind the door. It was the nasty little noise of metal parting under stress. 'Very well, then,' he said. 'In that case I shall need some silver tweezers, about two pints of cat's blood, a small whip and a chair —' It is said that the opposite of noise is silence. This isn't true. Silence is only the absence of noise. Silence would have been a terrible din compared to the sudden soft implosion of noiselessness that hit the wizards with the force of an exploding dandelion clock. A thick column of spitting light sprang up from the book, hit the ceiling in a splash of flame, and disappeared. Galder stared up at the hole, ignoring the smouldering patches in his beard. He pointed dramatically. To the upper cellars!' he cried, and bounded up the stone stairs. Slippers flapping and nightshirts billowing he other wizards followed him, falling over one another in their eagerness to be last. Nevertheless, they were all in time to see the fireball of occult potentiality disappear into the ceiling of the room above. 'Urgh,' said the youngest wizard, and pointed to the floor. The room had been part of the library until the magic had drifted through, violently reassembling the possibility particles of everything in its path. So it was reasonable to assume that the small purple newts had been part of the floor and the pineapple custard may once have been some books. And several of the wizards later swore that the small sad orang outang sitting in the middle of it all looked very much like the head librarian. Galder stared upwards. 'To the kitchen!' he bellowed, wading through the custard to the next flight of stairs. No-one ever found out what the great cast-iron cooking range had been turned into, because it had broken down a wall and made good its escape before the dishevelled party of wild-eyed mages burst into the room. The vegetable chef was found much later hiding in the soup cauldron, gibbering unhelpful things like The knuckles! The horrible knuckles!'

A month in a (quite a big) nutshell: December
Yeah so just a heads up, this is quite a long entry.
Alrighty, I can’t believe we’ve actually got to the end of the year... 2016 was a wild year. I passed IB and am now studying in university. This is probably the biggest change in my academic career so it really is pretty big. I look forward to the next year and what it may bring, and hope that I am constantly learning something new.
Okay so highlights of this month. Definitely the maths test I did that was worth 5%. Rumours were going around that it was actually worth 25% and that is a really big difference so I was a little shaken because I really felt some topics I had to do a lot of work. But I did really work my hardest and revised and practiced so many questions and it paid off because I got 78.5% which is a FIRST! I am so happy. At first I was scared of getting the grade because I wasn’t sure if I had done well or not, so I was thinking to myself it’s okay because it’s only worth 5%, but now that I actually did well I’m disappointed that it’s only 5% haha. Life never pleases. But the test did go quite well, I’m a little annoyed because there was seriously not enough time, because I had only gotten half way through the last question when they called that time was up, and it was a real shame because I knew how to do the last parts that I didn’t get time to get to. But life goes on. I have done well and done myself proud for sure.
Okay I also met up with some friends this month. Whoop whoop. Went to Westfield with the hoe for shopping and just some basic shenanigans, very cute of course. And I also met up with my sixth form girlies because one of them finally came back from uni since she’s the only one who moved out. That was real nice, we just caught up and it was just really nice to see them again since I don’t see them often ever really; uni takes over everyone’s lives okay.
Christmas this year was pretty madness. 24th-28th I was basically out all the time. So 24th we went up to Norfolk and spent the night there. I finally watched Home Alone haha. Everyone always talks about how it’s a Christmas film but I’ve never watch the first one fully so that was nice. Christmas day we came back down to London, mainly because I was adamant in being home to open my presents, I’m such a kid I swear. Notable gifts: my beautiful Fossil watch, cute socks/slippers, cute Vera Wang perfume, and a hairbrush (haha). My family hear me go on and on about my amazing baby Barbie hairbrush that I legit feel I’ve been using ever since I started brushing my own hair, and it is cracked and just so damaged like it is actual trash. But I’m very picky with the type of brush I want so I haven’t been able to find one that I like enough to change, my Barbie one was just perfect okay.
Okay but back to I think this was Christmas day. We were eating prawns and I swear I have had enough prawns and broccoli to last a lifetime. No more for me for a while. But yeah I’m getting on a tangent so there was this ridiculous prawn shell incident where I was peeling the shell of this prawn and my mum said I didn’t need to because you can eat the shell apparently, and because I had just about finished peeling it I just ate it and oh my goodness there was the tiniest bit of shell that I could not swallow for the love of me. And it was just there in a limbo, and I could feel it in my neck and sometimes it would hurt a little, and it legit stayed there for hours and hours and hours, even on my ride home back to London. Eventually it went when I was brushing my teeth that night. So random! I looked up various ways to get rid of it and everything, I was getting worried. But yes it was all good after I brushed my teeth, haha.
Alright, boxing day now. I have a relative who bought a house recently near Brent Cross so we went to the shopping centre over there and then went to his new house and met up with some other relatives who were also visiting. I bought a very nice khaki long bomber jacket from H&M, sharing with my sister. Very nice and cheap buy, been looking for something like this for a while now so I’m glad I got a bargain! Very cute, they have two small children and they are just bundles and bundles of energy. I will never forget the little girl’s creepy unicorn toy that she loved so much. We had a crazy fruit feast too haha I live the healthy life okay. When they went they both hugged us and the boy was so cute, so he hugged me and went to hug the next person but sort of paused and looked at me then smiled and gave me a thumbs up so randomly, it was SO CUTE! We were all laughing at his cuteness and I was just like hell yeah he gave me a thumbs up.
I also went Lakeside but the only notable thing from there was the ridiculous queue at Zara. Waited half an hour with my sister so that she could buy this oat she’s been wanting for a while, so I bought a cute tee as well since she was in line.
So we got a new car earlier this year and this Christmas was the first time we properly tried to use the sat nav, NEVER AGAIN because it was horrific! In the end I had to get up Google maps on my phone and my dad was basically driving blind by what I was saying.
28th I met up with the same relatives (good god we saw them so much this Christmas) and my uncle’s family and went yum cha down Chinatown, very nice. Their baby Jessica, my cousin, is SO CUTE! She waddles so cutely.
Okay that is it for this month and this YEAR! Extra long entry this month because… I don’t know I just did a lot over the Christmas days so I had more to write I guess… I don’t have a new year’s resolution… I just, I don’t know. Didn’t make one. 2016 was definitely a big year, but I look forward to writing the date incorrectly.
Here’s to the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017!
