at some point it's just like. do they even fucking like the thing they're asking AI to make? "oh we'll just use AI for all the scripts" "we'll just use AI for art" "no worries AI can write this book" "oh, AI could easily design this"
like... it's so clear they've never stood in the middle of an art museum and felt like crying, looking at a piece that somehow cuts into your marrow even though the artist and you are separated by space and time. they've never looked at a poem - once, twice, three times - just because the words feel like a fired gun, something too-close, clanging behind your eyes. they've never gotten to the end of the movie and had to arrive, blinking, back into their body, laughing a little because they were holding their breath without realizing.
"oh AI can mimic style" "AI can mimic emotion" "AI can mimic you and your job is almost gone, kid."
... how do i explain to you - you can make AI that does a perfect job of imitating me. you could disseminate it through the entire world and make so much money, using my works and my ideas and my everything.
and i'd still keep writing.
i don't know there's a word for it. in high school, we become aware that the way we feel about our artform is a cliche - it's like breathing. over and over, artists all feel the same thing. "i write because i need to" and "my music is how i speak" and "i make art because it's either that or i stop existing." it is such a common experience, the violence and immediacy we mean behind it is like breathing to me - comes out like a useless understatement. it's a cliche because we all feel it, not because the experience isn't actually persistent. so many of us have this ... fluttering urgency behind our ribs.
i'm not doing it for the money. for a star on the ground in some city i've never visited. i am doing it because when i was seven i started taking notebooks with me on walks. i am doing it because in second grade i wrote a poem and stood up in front of my whole class to read it out while i shook with nerves. i am doing it because i spent high school scribbling all my feelings down. i am doing it for the 16 year old me and the 18 year old me and the today-me, how we can never put the pen down. you can take me down to a subatomic layer, eviscerate me - and never find the source of it; it is of me. when i was 19 i named this blog inkskinned because i was dramatic and lonely and it felt like the only thing that was actually permanently-true about me was that this is what is inside of me, that the words come up over everything, coat everything, bloom their little twilight arias into every nook and corner and alley
"we're gonna replace you". that is okay. you think that i am writing to fill a space. that someone said JOB OPENING: Writer Needed, and i wrote to answer. you think one raindrop replaces another, and i think they're both just falling. you think art has a place, that is simply arrives on walls when it is needed, that is only ever on demand, perfect, easily requested. you see "audience spending" and "marketability" and "multi-line merch opportunity"
and i see a kid drowning. i am writing to make her a boat. i am writing because what used to be a river raft has long become a fully-rigged ship. i am writing because you can fucking rip this out of my cold dead clammy hands and i will still come back as a ghost and i will still be penning poems about it.
it isn't even love. the word we use the most i think is "passion". devotion, obsession, necessity. my favorite little fact about the magic of artists - "abracadabra" means i create as i speak. we make because it sluices out of us. because we look down and our hands are somehow already busy. because it was the first thing we knew and it is our backbone and heartbreak and everything. because we have given up well-paying jobs and a "real life" and the approval of our parents. we create because - the cliche again. it's like breathing. we create because we must.

**DISCLAIMER** I am not a financial advisor and anything that I say…
I'll be making these into (handmade) stickers and will be giving them out for FREE at both the upcoming Elfia event and at Heroes Dutch Comic Con (summer edition)
I actually don't think anyone from the Netherlands follows me on here but uuuhh if you do plan on going to one/both events, keep an eye out for someone in a badly made Taylor cosplay and you will be granted with one of these bad bois >:)
one of the things about having an unstable parent is that it can so easily ruin your future. you want to get out, but getting out takes having agency. it takes the resume and the grades and the stellar community service history.
but you have to choose your battles. you know if you sign up for an after-school activity, it'll be okay for a while, so long as the activity is parent-approved and god-fearing. over time, like all things, it will become an argument (i can't keep carting your ass to these things) or a weapon (talk to me like that again, see if you get to go to practice). sometimes, if you love the thing, it's worth it. but you also know better than to love something: that's how they get you. if you ever actually want something, it will always be the center of their attention. they will never stop threatening you with it. telling you of course i'm a good parent, i came to all of those stupid events.
you learn to balance yourself perfectly. you can either have a social life or you can have hobbies. both of these things will be under constant scrutiny. you spend too much time with her, you should be at home with family is equally paired with you're acting like this because you're addicted to what's on that goddamn screen. you cannot ever actually win, so everything falls within a barter system that you calculate before entering: do you want to learn how to drive? if so, you'll need to give up asking for a new laptop, even though yours died. maybe you can work on a computer at the library. of course, that would mean you'd be allowed to go to the library, which would mean something else has to bleed. nothing ever actually comes free.
and that bitter, horrible irony: you could be literally following their orders and it still isn't pretty. they tell you to get a job; they hate that your job keeps you late and gives you access to actual money. they tell you to do better in school; they say no child of mine needs a tutor. they want you to stop being so morose, don't you know there are people who are really suffering - but they revile the idea you might actually need therapy.
you didn't survive that fall the way other people would. you've seen other people scramble and get their way out, however they could. maybe you were made too-soft: the answer didn't come to you easily. it wasn't quick. it was brutal and nasty. some people even asked you why didn't you just work hard and escape during school? and you felt your head spinning. why didn't you? (they control your financial aid. they control your loan status. they love having that kind of thing). maybe in another life you got diagnosed sooner and got the meds you needed to actually focus and got attention from the right teachers who helped you clear hurdles to get up out of here - but for now? here?
the effort of trying. the effort of not-dying. that kind of effort was absolutely agonizing.
Who is the Wayne household butler's favorite "adopted grandson"?
I know we joke about it a lot, but even in the canon we can see several times how Alfred is closer to Jason Todd.
I want to be clear this is not to belittle the others, he really loves them.
But just as every parent will always have that child most like them, so too Alfred finds in Jason that little child most like him.
A street child hungry to acculturate, he hangs on the butler's words because he sees him as a worker compared to the billionaire Bruce Wayne so Jason slowly approaches and learns.
Because Jason Todd takes it all as a new chance, a new chance for redemption and learns what it means to have passions and hobbies.
And Bruce is there, but where Bruce is not then Butler comes: rules of bon ton, quotes from classic books, ethnic foods and anecdotes from the war and adventures in London.
That child then broke down and so many things fell out of place, maybe Jason just doesn't have all those memories. But the muscle memory and his favorite things remain. So maybe someday you might find him crouched on a rooftop intent on reading the paperback version of Northanger Abbey after cold-cocking three Black Mask goons at the docks.
if you hate the new dashboard layout and find it unusable, and/or hate Tumblr Live and want it gone forever
CANCEL YOUR AD-FREE SUBSCRIPTION RIGHT NOW
and send Tumblr Support a POLITE message telling them you have done so and why.
The ONLY chance of getting Tumblr execs to pay attention to existing user feedback rather than whatever the marketing department is telling them about new users, is to hit them in the wallet.
You'll still get the remaining time on your subscription before they start shoving ads down your throat, and if they haven't fixed shit by then, there's always adblockers.
This is the wording I used:
Hi Support,
I have just canceled my ad-free subscription due to the unusuable dashboard layout and the inability to permanently disable/remove Tumblr Live. In addition, I will no longer purchase merchandise or gifts. I am not willing to give money to a company which has made clear that it does not care about or listen to its userbase, especially the loyal ones who've been around for a decade or more.
If Tumblr reverts the layout changes or otherwise makes the dashboard usable again, AND provides the ability to permanently disable Tumblr Live (both at no cost to users), I will reconsider my decision.
Tumblr has made clear they only care about money. Let's speak their language.
There is no one "easiest" way to make money online, as the best method for you will depend on your skills, interests, and financial goals. However, here are a few options that are relatively easy and accessible for most people:
Online survey websites: Participating in market research surveys can be a quick and easy way to earn extra cash. There are many websites, such as Swagbucks and Survey Junkie, that pay users for taking surveys.
Selling items online: You can use platforms like Amazon, eBay, or Etsy to sell items that you no longer need or want. You can also sell handmade items, crafts, or digital products on these platforms.
Affiliate marketing: Affiliate marketing involves promoting other people's products and earning a commission on any sales made through your unique affiliate link. You can promote products on your blog, social media, or website.
Freelancing: If you have a skill, such as writing, graphic design, or web development, you can offer your services as a freelancer on platforms like Fiverr or Upwork.
Online tutoring or teaching: You can offer your expertise in a particular subject or skill by tutoring students online or teaching a class through platforms like Teachable or Udemy.
Remember, these options may not necessarily result in a full-time income and may require effort and time to establish a significant stream of income. It's important to research and carefully evaluate any opportunity before participating and be wary of any offer that seems too good to be true.
