I know I'm very lucky to be able to have too surgery but I'm still struggling to love my body. I feel like I'm wasting this surgery by being overweight and not eating well. I also know that is untrue. Life has ups and downs and when I'm feeling better mentally ill be able to focus on myself physically. I do like these photos tho. Nearly 6 months Post op.

Being a black trans man how would you describe your journey so far ?

The one thing people dont really talk about but is very difficult as a trans poc (or any transgender person) is finding a job. Many employers would ask for me to bring in my ID and after seeing my name and gender marker they'd say they'll call me later but NEVER called back. This happened 23 times (yes I've kept count) in the past 2 years of my transition. A lot of people are very prejudiced. When I worked for Subway (last month) my manager constantly misgendered and dead named me (with a full beard in front of customers). Now that I finally have my legal documents fixed I will never take it for granted. Overall my journey has had its ups and downs, but I always told myself it DOES get better, and it did. 😁

You’re going to get really itchy, the hair is going to start coming in everywhere but before you see it you’ll feel it. Your throat might get itchy too from the cartilage growing to widen your vocal chords giving you an Adam’s apple. You’ll have a lot of voice cracks.

You’re going to get really hot like temperature wise your body will feel really hot all the time for the first bit. And you’ll want to eat, a lot. Your pee is gonna smell different (weird I know) and your sex drive will increase. Your little man is gonna grow and it’ll feel weird and super sensitive so change your underwear if you need to for the first bit.

Take lots of pictures please! You’ll wanna remember everything. I didn’t have this back when I started but you should try apps like these to help you document.

Or you can make a separate account to post all your pictures for safe keeping. I know a lot of people have trouble with this but if you feel the need to delete or hide any of your old photos pretransition please just keep a backup somewhere, anywhere, in case you want to look back on them. I wish I could.

Here’s a simple expectation of your HRT effects.

If you’re doing your T shots, try to document them too. For me after about a year, I habituated to the effects of testosterone which left me without the adrenaline rush I needed to do my shot, which left me with needle anxiety! So I actually missed probably 6 weeks of T. If this happens, try to see if you can ask your endo for androgel or another alternative they all deliver the testosterone the same way.

It kinda sucks but after a while, aquaintences or people you haven’t seen in a long time won’t recognzie you anymore. Or if they do, they might refer to you by the wrong name they’re really good about it usually once they see the man you’ve become. Just kindly correct them.

Once your body weight starts to redistribute and you gain muscle mass try to work out, even a little bit because this is your body’s prime time! You’ll gain muscle you wished you could before.

Take care of yourself, use your resources, connect with the community, be honest with your doctors, don’t compare your transition to anyone else’s. I know this is hard because before testosterone thats all I would fantasize about and obsess over but once your own transition starts it’s toxic to compare yourself to others. Everyone is different. I know you will do wonderful things and have a beautiful medical transition, I am SO excited for you and so grateful you get to start the part of your life. I love you! Good luck! ☺️♥️💉💪
