Growing up and escaping fundie-ism is wild (people should know I grew up indoctrinated in ultra fundamentalist Christianity, I think) because everyone is so obsessed with control and the world-ending that any functional skills outside of proselytizing are heavily discouraged (and, in some cases, effectively illegal).
So every year since I’ve left I get closer and closer to Mr. Darcy’s definition of ‘an accomplished woman’ but I get more and more likely to hit any man who talks to me like Proud!Darcy with a vase.
#it’s WILD#you wouldn’t believe the small things I enjoyed for the first time after leaving#things you wouldn’t even think of#or how many times I saw people portraying functional skills as ‘vanity’#not even just decorative skills#FUNCTIONAL skills#like if I cooked too ‘fancy’ and it wasn’t a cultural dish#I’d get scolded#they’d still eat the food and ask for more though#like you’re supposed to be perfect but you can’t be ‘impressive’#bc it’s boasting#religious trauma#christianity#ex christian#ex fundie#ex fundamentalist#cw christianity#tw christianity

Even after learning their secret identities, the hero community always insisted that there was something inhuman about the bats. No one doubted that their intensive training had a lot to do with it, but it never quite explained how they could evade a Kryptonian's super senses, how they could melt into shadows, how they could function so long with little food, little rest, little oxygen if need be. Most people dismissed their uneasy feelings, but there was something strange about the bats, something uncanny, something that made them different from the arrows and other vanilla human members. And, slowly enough that no one really noticed, it was getting stronger.
Until one day, during a diplomatic meeting with the ruler of the Infinite Realms, when High King Phantom turned to Batman and his brood and literally brightened. "Oh! I didn't know you had liminal members!"
Or: through a variety of factors (proximity to death, their own death/near death experiences, exposure to the Lazarus Pits, the favor of Lady Gotham, immersion in Gotham's own cursed ambient ectoplasm, being a close knit group who continued to expose eachother, etc.) the batfamily have been becoming liminal/ecto-contaminated without noticing. The powers they're developing have been subtle, and align with the skills they expect to have, so no one brought it up when they started being able to hold their breath beyond human limitations, or got so sneaky that they literally seemed invisible, or had a lucky miss when they expected a bullet to go right through them. And they always exuded an unsettling aura of fear, so no one else thought anything was out of the ordinary either. By the time they meet Danny, Gotham counts as one of the most fiercely defended ghost haunts on the planet, with so many territorial liminals patrolling the streets.
#bruce is probably pretty upset that he and all his kids are now noticably undead#also alfred stopped aging at some point and seems to be functionally immortal and noone really thought about that either#danny is able to explain so much shit to them#a lot of stuff that they thought was just normal vigilante behavior because 'hey we all do it' turns put to be very definitively ghost shit#I'm imagining them having something close to ghost powers but less flashy#like maybe they can't go fully invisible but they can meld into shadows well enough that they functionally are#and they can't become intangible at will but they can get potentially harmful strikes to pass through them#they have a common suite of powers because of the way they trained together but some of them develop unique skills#Barbara gets a bit of technopathy and Cass gets shadow travel and Jason has the strongest intimidation aura that sort of thing#dpxdc#dp x dc#danny phantom#dc#batfam#my rambles#my writing#edit: fixed a typo lol

MDZS x Firefly AU: A ragtag crew.
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#mdzs au#firefly#wei wuxian#jiang cheng#lan wangji#jiang yanli#Wen Ning#Wen Qing#nie huaisang#xue yang#A-qing#That's right! this month's flavour of MDZS AU is Space Western!#I recently rewatched the show and forgot that the lore essentially made everyone bilingual in Mandarin and English.#It's fun to hear characters talk in mandarin and now understand a little bit of what they're saying!#A Firefly AU fits them so well and I need to talk about it.#I have strong thoughts about my placement for all of these characters. Let's start with the most likely to be contraversial:#I think a less thought-out AU would pitch Wei Wuxian as the Captain or a Companion.#But there are a several reasons why that would simply not be the case:#Wei Wuxian is smart! He's good at what he finds a passion and interest in! Piloting is a complex skill that grants him a freedom to explore#He wants to kick back and chill! He would hate the responsibility of being the captain! That's JC's job!#In my heart he's also second in command - which does make WWX essentially Zoe and Wash smashed together.#Companions are also persons of high rank in this universe. Something WWX is very...not defined as.#Someone beautiful of higher social rank...someone who yearns for someone they want to explode in their mind...It was no contest.#I think there are a lot if really interesting things to explore with LWJ as a companion. Functionally they are similar to Courtesans -#But it isn't always about the sex - A Lan Wangji who sees himself only through the wants and needs of others -#is a really interesting angle I have been pondering a lot about.#Final thought to close up this long ramble: Yes. It is so essential that every space crew have a 'Weird Teen (girl optional) on board'.#Will I post more of this? Maybe! If people want to see more!

i'm not reblogging the whole post again but @zorilleerrant you are so real for this
#there are a great many skills and crafts that do take time effort and whatnot to do decently well#i can verify that. i do SEVERAL myself#costume jewellery is not and will never be one of them#which is great because honestly more people should make things with their hands (if they have hands and those hands are functional)#it's good for the soul#the reverse of 'you're paying me far too much for this tbh'#is that it's probably the ONE thing that you can start doing for yourself for VERY little investment#have nice stuff almost immediately#and feel like a god for beating claire's at the own game

stormbringers fucking insane for using rimlaine as a contrast to skk. these two couldnt trust each other fully and rimbaud only believed he could help verlaine feel human, not truly be so, and still considered him Other, however much he believed them to be equals, verlaines humanity only existed in rimbauds eyes because he gave it to him. verlaines inability to accept his own humanity or even really that rimbauds feelings for him were genuine because he, alone, singular, monstrously set apart from humanity, should be incapable of receiving anything resembling affection or genuine understanding, such that it left him betraying his partner. and then they cannot exist as two beings working seamlessly together. rimbaud and verlaine in fact cannot exist as two beings at all, only as one conjoined entity. verlaine kept alive with rimbauds skill, and rimbaud, long dead and refusing that reality until he can find his partner, existing only as an extension of verlaine. while skk who do trust each other blindly, who do see humanity in each other enough to look past when they doubt it in themselves, who see humanity not as a defined be or be not, but as a set of values, as a do or do not. they are able to exist as one act in two parts. interdependent, always, even down to their skills, but still functioning as one unit in two separate cogs made to fit together.
#and then of course you have sskk who are two separate entitites entirely but are entwined all the same#by their own will. their skills are compatible yes but not dependent. they dont need each other the way the others do#they choose each other they choose mutual reliance. they choose to function as one entity.#im just rambling i need to reread sb but#wah#skk#soukoku#rimlaine#bsd#i drafted this earlier forgetting it was chapter day#so. sorry for talking abt sb on atsushi day i have an illness

Functional Skills vs GCSEs: Understanding the Key Differences
Functional Skills are not the same as GCSEs, but they are equivalent qualifications in English and Math. They focus on practical skills and application, offering an alternative pathway for those who prefer a more hands-on approach to learning. Here is my blog:https://lead-academy.org/blog/does-functional-skills-count-as-a-gcse/

Autistic people are often portrayed as being really genuine and kind and brilliant, but I would like to clarify that some of us are idiots who don’t understand people and just want to vibe with our 53 unfinished projects and maybe a cat
#actually autistic#autism#autistic#autistic adult#Autistics in media are often geniuses or brilliant inventors or whatever#and I just want to clarify that#i am an idiot#the autism does not grant everyone special skills or smarts#some of us just get the obsession with frogs or whatever#not all autistics are savants#that said#savants are super cool#and I love seeing autistic characters#I can absorb emotions and behavior patterns from books and such#but real people emotions are weird#autism also has the stereotype of being pure and innocent and kind because it’s often only considered in kids#I am a disingenuous and manipulative troll#i am petty#and thats okay#i actually like this#plus the stereotype of being unable to lie kinda works in my favor#except that most people don’t clock that I’m autistic because I’m an adult#I’m pretty good at masking ngl#I can pretend to be functional at times#anyway#if anyone needs me#I’ll be comparing the live action and original HTTYD movies word for word and note for note lol#audhd

it's nice that the genre framework of a mass-produced action novel tend to gamify empathy, isn't it? makes human interaction so easy to understand. if you choose an incarnation to raise, you can see your understanding of them increase, and watch their power levels grow as their bonds with others increase. save a person, and they are in your debt. play on their traumas you already understand, and you can earn their loyalty. this action earns you an ally, this one an enemy. human hearts reduced down to words on a page, skills, stats, bonds, understanding that can be used to borrow their skills.
makes it simple for kim dokja, a man who has next to no practical experience with deep human bonds, to comprehend how people work, doesn't it?
#narrates#orv#kind of an evil post here. raven's been pointing out the commodification of empathy#and how kim dokja's skills specifically tend to engender a mindset where other people are tools he can used#while she's been reading orv for the first time#rly got me thinking.#when the only framework you have for understanding the world still gives you a starting place for empathy#but is still a little bit fucked in how it functions ‼️‼️‼️‼️

What would it be like if people in your community looked out for you?
What would it look like if people outside your most-texted friends and closest family knew you and were invested in your wellbeing and were willing to make deliberate effort to contribute to it?
What would a healthy supportive community, full of a wide variety of people who aren't all necessarily friends, look like?
What would make your community more like that?
What structures or opportunities already exist that might enable that? Are they sufficient? Why or why not? If you don't know what kinds of organizations etc exist in your community, how could you find out? If they aren't sufficient, what could you do to contribute or create new opportunities for relating with each other?
What barriers interrupt opportunities for healthy connection and support in your community? What would effectively addressing those barriers look like?
What would be the easiest possible first step that one busy person could take to start to make your community more connected? Can you think of anything that you personally could do?
What kinds of skills or ideas would be necessary that you can't provide? How could you find people with those kinds of skills or ideas who are also interested in community care and who might be willing to work together?
You're probably marginalized by at least one form of oppression. Most people are. You're probably busy and tired. Most people are. What would make it possible for you to contribute anyway? What would make it possible for other busy tired people to contribute?
If you want your community to care for you—if you need that, as I'm convinced all people do—you might have to figure out how to care for your community first. If you wanted that, how would you start?
#being deliberately vague wrt 'community' here because it can look like many things#your neighborhood? people who go to your school? your local cultural or religious community? your local music scene?#but i specifically mean larger groups. not just friend groups.#a functioning community that actually works as a broad support system requires a lot of people#with a lot of different perspectives/experiences/skills/needs etc#it can start from almost any large group#but to become effectively supportive there has to be some catalyst to encourage ppl to value&cultivate care and respect#as well as difference and personal autonomy#thatdiabolicalfeminist

Seeing people's opinions on ABA here and everything they say is so far removed from everything I'm learning in my classes and seeing from people in the field that I've come to the conclusion that either no one on this site actually knows what ABA *is*, they think it's still the same as it was back in the 60s, or behaviour analysts in the US don't abide by the ethical code like they're supposed to.
Knowing the US, I would genuinely believe any of these.
Cause wdym ABA is just "teaching people to mask" or "teaching people to not be autistic". We are EXPLICITLY TOLD that we CANNOT touch a behaviour unless it's socially significant - i.e., it causes harm to the person doing it or those around them, or it severely limits the person's ability to access supports necessary for their quality of life. No one is out here taking children and forcing them not to stim - and if they are, its a massive breach of the ethical code and you can legally report them to the board of ethics.
And don't get me fucking started on what some of you think a punishment procedure is. You'd need to go through every other possible intervention before even THINKING of starting one, and even then you'd need multiple supervisors, a gigantic stack of paperwork, EXTENSIVE communication with and consent from the client, and One Million safety measures before you could even get permission to tell a client "no, don't do that", or remove their access to television - which, by the way, is about as extreme as the "punishments" get.
Do remember that it's called a "punishment" in the scientific sense - a consequence that reduces the likelihood of a behaviour reoccuring - NOT in the typical sense. A high five could be a punishment to someone. So could a compliment.
Even when a client literally tries to STAB you you have to use the least invasive and least restrictive safety measure possible, you can't just lock them up and you CERTAINLY can't sedate them unless it is literally your only option.
So either y'all have never actually interacted with actual ABA and are just repeating stuff you read online, or you've had the misfortune of meeting an incompetent or unethical practitioner (which, seeing how "Behaviour Analyst" wasn't a protected term until THIS YEAR, and ANYONE could claim to be one, is very possible).
Or maybe the field itself is full of incompetent and unethical and ignorant practitioners! From the US, that wouldn't surprise me.
But ABA itself (and it's derivatives, like IBI) are EXTREMELY useful and effective tools for helping people of all kinds learn the skills they need to lead better lives. Maybe it's not right for everyone - few things are - but the incessant demonization and unwillingness to actually DISCUSS, instead of just throwing around misinformation and fearmongering, is both unproductive and actively damaging people's ability to access supports they might actually benefit from.
And this is coming from someone who used to have the same opinion of ABA, btw.
#can you tell i'm angry about this#but for the love of god seriously people#the entire field is centered around making people's lives better#i assure you no competent professional gives a shit that little timmy likes to flap his hands#early IBI is strongly correlated with increased intellectual function and adaptive skills in children with developmental disabilities#applied behaviour analysis#ABA#I'm so tired of seeing people talk shit about something they clearly know nothing about
