So, im teaching my kid how to lie to their dad.

HOLD. ON.

Geezus mother fuckers.

Theyre a late night reader like i was. Hes all about them getting a full nights rest. The two are not compatible, as you can imagine.

So ive been coaching the kid on how to read at night without your parents knowing. Told the spawn that so long as theyre being wise and stealthy i wont say anything. But if their dad catches them, game over i am enforcing the punishment/consequences.

My reasoning behind this is:

A. Youre only a kid once and this is the peak time for shenanigans. After all, they are in middle school. Thats when you start shenanegining.

B. Theyre adhd and autistic. They are reclaiming their time at night same as their dad and i do. We are a fully neurodivergent household.

C. Id rather this be their rebellion than something else. You give them a safe rebellion and they get the itch scratched 9/10 times. Okay maybe 7-8/10, but still, very preferable margins.

D. This kinda folds into point B. again: this is their time truly to themselves and they get to discover who they are with nothing but a book and their mind about them in the utter silence of the night. This is where personal philosophy is planted, where it sits and starts to germinate for kids like that.

My mom let me do the same thing, funny enough. It was how i survived that house. Hopefully this isnt some toxic shit im passing on

the day ray toro gets recognized for just how talented he actually is will be the day i can finally die happy.

because not only does he write some incredible lead guitar parts, his background vocals are. kind of nuts. like his voice just compliments gerard’s well anyways but some of the notes he’s hitting with the stability and tone he’s hitting them with is NOT something i usually expect out of a lead guitarist. perfectly belted B4s while jumping around and playing guitar is not an easy feat. he often sings higher than gee would live (though ray doesn’t actually have to sing as much? so he can allot for using his voice more in that way). ray’s voice is seriously very good. go listen to his background vocals on the chorus of dead! from live in mexico.

I am a product of the 1990s and as such I grew up on a steady diet of mecha anime and weird sci-fi/fantasy stuff.

One of my favorite—and I mean FAVORITE—things is what I have always referred to as "bulky 90s future tech."

It's all the super big, chunky, clunky, takes up all the space it can tech that mecha anime and 90s sci-fi depicted as being available in the distant future.

The tech from Cowboy Bebop and Akira are really good examples.

AND APPEARENTLY Y'ALL ARE CALLING CASSETTE FUTURISM OR SOMETHING?! LIKE, WHOMST THE FUCK WAS GONNA TELL ME I WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE OVER HERE DROOLING OVER BULKY 90S FUTURE TECH?! THE GREEDY, GREEDY BARBARIANS KEEPING THIS FOR YOURSELVES!

I've offically come full circle a decade later since I'm back hyperfixating on the Arthurian legend distracting myself from everything and listening to the same music as my 14 year old self was. But hey at least I have the confidence in drawing them now.

I love them so so dearly I'm going just a little insane, I'm sorry to everyone who doesn't know me beyond my usual fandoms, you have to put up with what rearranged my brain chemistry when I was a kid.

This started as just a few of the knights, Lancelot, Gawaine, and Galahad and then it became: "Oh but then I should draw __" and here we are. My designs are all over the place and I cannot be bothered to actually draw armor I'll die i just want to draw pretty patterns. But I think the mismatch of clothing styles and all that makes it cohesive?

And I'm going with Malroy and T.H White influence as it's what I know best, that being said all the boys have their coat of arms alluded to in some way but you might have to squint.

(my laptop absolutely hates me for this one. imagine exporting a file and then having to manipulate the sizing 3 times for it to even be able to upload anywhere, couldn't be me. I don't even know how to show the full thing..)

STAR TREK DIALOGUE ANALYSIS OVERVIEW

oh boy so i mentioned this project awhile back and after a long hiatus i'm finally done! (the irony that i wrote this and then took a second equally long hiatus but the point stands.)

i went through transcripts for TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise (thanks to chakoteya.net for those!) and calculated how many lines each main character has in each episode (and season & show as a whole), calculated means, looked at who had a lot of high & low line count episodes, made some graphs, and did some analysis on gender and race.

you can find my whole process & results on a spreadsheet here (it's a little messy. i'm sorry. if someone pays me i'll make it look nice and actually learn how to make good graphs in Google Sheets.) and i'll walk through some Big Results & reactions on this post here under a cut. just so this doesn't get too long, i'll breakdown each show, post my gender & race analysis, and a big list of every character with how much of a focus they get on separate posts. they'll all be tagged as "star trek dialogue analysis".

but first just a disclaimer – i do have professional experience doing data analysis but this is by no means a professional analysis and i'm sure there are plenty of mistakes because this was initially a small personal project that snowballed a little bit. if there are any Major Things you see that are wrong (i.e. i copy and pasted a totally wrong value somewhere) please reach out and i'll correct it if i can. also if anyone wants to use this data for anything, feel free but tag me because i'm curious!

all of the following graphs measure mean (average) lines of dialogue per episode, averaging all seasons (that they were a main character) together. please refer to the spreadsheet for more detailed information about exact numbers.

unsurprising results... this is the one Star Trek show that really never aspired to be an ensemble show. i was actually surprised by how few lines Spock and McCoy have in comparison to Kirk

also unsurprising that the two characters of color have the fewest lines per episodes in the 60s

Kirk had BY FAR the most lines of dialogue per episode out of all characters i've measured (115.20)

again unsurprising that Picard has more lines by such a wide margin

honestly fairly surprised by how few lines Data had (I thought he'd beat Riker by a decent margin) and was very surprised at how few lines Troi consistently has across the season. like i knew it wasn't many but dang... only 18 lines per episode on average.

and here we can see that ds9 really embraces being an ensemble show with everyone (sans Sisko, Ezri, & Jake) having around the same number of lines on average, probably the most equal overall of any Star Trek show.

Sisko obviously has the most lines as the lead and Jake the fewest because of irl work restrictions (and less kid-centric stories).

i was surprised with how many lines Ezri had but then again her entire character was compressed into a single season so it seems fair. (interestingly, Ezri has the most lines out of anyone in s7 (996), even beating Sisko (874))

despite having the most lines in DS9, Sisko has by far the least out of any main character/Captain of the shows i've measured.

Janeway has the highest average line count out of any 90s character and third highest of any character i measured (69.51)

and again, with the exception of Janeway, we see that Voyager tends to be more ensemble focused than TNG which surprised me a bit given how later seasons are often criticized for ignoring a lot of characters but i think the very ensemble heavy early seasons balance things out.

the characters also generally seem to have more lines on average than either TNG or DS9.

and oof... yeah Voyager was it for the ensemble style show

Archer has the second highest average line count (86.68) for the whole study after Kirk (115.20)

apparently the inception of Enterprise was to recreate the TOS style triumvirate and for better or worse they certainly did.

some overall fun stats –

there are 162,455 total lines of dialogue spoken by the main cast from TOS to Enterprise

somehow there's only a ten line difference between the amount of dialogue spoken in TNG (43,148) and DS9 (43,158)

the 5 characters with the most dialogue per episode in Berman era Trek: Archer (86.68), Janeway (69.51), Picard (69.37), Sisko (50.72), & Tucker (46.03). notably only one woman and one character of color (more on this in a gender & race analysis post)

not including kids, the 5 characters with the least dialogue in Berman era Trek are: Mayweather (13.39), Sato (15.99), Troi (18.11), Kes (18.18), & Neelix (19.68). notably including three women and two characters of color (again, more on this in a different post)

the character who has the most dialogue in a single length episode is Quark with 189 lines in Who Mourns For Morn?

Mortimer: No need. I lost myself for a good while. Being the father of two wasn’t enough to pull me out of it. Time passed by and well, here I am. I’m not sure if I’ll ever find someone again, as for you, you will learn how to love again. I believe this story could help a lot of people in their grief.

Taryn: You really think so?

Mortimer: Mhm. So if I signed you on, are you willing to commit on this journey with my company and I?

Taryn: Y-Yeah. Absolutely.

Mortimer: Congratulations, Taryn.

Alex: It’d ruin the surprise and there’s no fun in that.

Kai: You’re awful. She was so nervous! Literally almost crashed the car.

Alex: She was, wasn’t she? My bad. 

Taryn: [ silent yelling ] Hola muchachitos.

Kai: ] I am so proud of you! 

Taryn: Thank you! Also I have you to thank!

Alex: Nah, I just sped up the inevitable process. That book was bound to get published. I read it, I hope you don’t mind.

Taryn: Alex!

Alex: Whu? I liked it!

Taryn: Hmph. Come over for dinner?

Alex: I’d like that, if Kai’s alright with it. He did tell me how terrible I am earlier.

Taryn: Would you stop being mean to the man?

Kai: Maybe… But I guess it’s fine if you came over.

Alex: Sweet. I heard your cooking is divine.

Taryn: I know a trick or two. This one could learn.

Kai: I almost caught the toaster on fire.

Alex: Sounds about right-

writing an observation about sally's shirt pattern because there seems to be more then one way to draw it

i've been thinking about nahyuta's title as the "last rites prosecutor" because i think it's an interesting part of his character that's immediately apparent from his first appearance... in japanese it's written as トムライの検事 (tomurai no kenji) with tomurai meaning funeral/burial. this is pretty self-explanatory considering his tendency to pray for the victim but i actually think it's really interesting that the localization opted for the term "last rites" instead

last rites are a specifically christian practice of praying for the dying to absolve them of their sins before they die - in other words, prayers given to the deceased wouldn't be considered last rites (x)

this is a pretty blatant contradiction of the original's meaning and what nahyuta actually does in the game but i think it's interesting to consider that the person he might be praying for is the defendant (and under khura'in's DC act, the defense as well), not the victim... even outside of khura'in we see that those who are proven guilty in murder trials are executed, and we know that nahyuta has been acting as a prosecutor under ga'ran, almost definitely sending several rebels and defense attorneys to their deaths in the process.

it would just be really tragic if his habit of praying came out of desperation at being forced to send innocents or even former comrades/friends to their deaths... whether it being interpreted as a funeral rite for the victim arose from the people around him or as another act of desperation from nahyuta to cover his actual intentions doesn't matter as much since i think one would have led to the other anyway...

you know when you're doing a drawing for your friend, and then you add more things because you know it would make them happy and be like "WWOAAHAHH SO COOLL YIPPEEEE YAYAYY!" when see the art

but then you start to think things like "if i don't do this right, they will think i didn't care while i was drawing this for them!!!! They will not be happy if they think this!!!!!!!!!!!" and then the drawing that was just a sketch, is now a full drawing, and that drawing that had to be finished in one day, now is for days, and when you realize it's now for a week, AND THEN IT'S FOR WEEKS OR WORSE!!!!!
