So over the week I've been replaying Return of the Mammalians, because I haven't played it since the week Splatoon 3 launched and I wanted to see how I felt about it without the excitement of playing a brand new game clouding my critical judgement.

(spoilers for RotM below, just in case)

That said I didn't feel like it changed my opinion very much. RotM's biggest problem is that it feels like the developers thought of a couple of really cool ideas (The fakeout in the intro, Deep Cut being bosses, the lore in the Alterna Logs, the final fight against Mr. Grizz) and then put them all in the game without really trying to connect them all in a very tangible way, and as a result Alterna is a very nebulous space that doesn't make any sense from a narrative standpoint (if it was a human settlement why is it full machinery and tests only inklings and octolings can use? What even IS the treasure we assemble except "a tool that just happens to solve the current problem?) but only really exists for gameplay.

The story also suffers as a result of this, too. Narratively nothing really happens until the very end of the game, where we end up just kind of stumbling into Mr. Grizz's plot to fuzzify the world right as he puts it into motion. Octo Expansion got around this by using its lore snippets to give the supporting cast a story of their own that unfolded as you progressed through the game, and ultimately it's Agent 8's actions that push the story of OE forward. In RotM we just happen to be there when things happen.

But despite all of its problems RotM also just plays really well. The combination of OE-style shorter trial levels with Hero Mode-styled hub areas you have to explore for levels and secrets work really well together, and those hubs in particular are an absolute blast to dig around in for secrets and open up a little by little. Deep Cut are incredibly fun as ineffectual Team Rocket-esque villains, and the whole final fight against Mr. Grizz is really good, especially the music. I don't even think Calamari Inkantation is especially good by Splatoon standards, but 3MIX is genuinely just an astounding track.

But I think what ultimately makes me feel more positive than negative about RotM is that I think its' thematic undertones actually really work for me. Mr. Grizz's actual involvement in the story might have been mishandled but as a villain he works. I've already written about him a bunch so keep things brief Splatoon has always been about the dangers of clinging to the past, and Mr. Grizz pushes that idea to its limits, because he is the past. He is a relic of a lost age, and he is so desperate to return to the world he knows that he will burn the future and turn back time (metaphorically) to achieve it.

But there's also the Alterna Logs and the reveal that it was human dreams of seeing the sun that drove sealife onto dry land. I think there is a compelling argument to be made that they didn't need to explain any of that to begin with, but I also think the explanation works with everything the series has been setting up on a thematic level. Humanity is gone, and will never come back, but our dreams lived on in the minds of the inklings and the octolings (and the jellies, and everyone else), and while they didn't know why, they reached for the sun together, and by achieving humanity's dreams they earned the right to take our place.

The timeline of the bad endings in Splatoon (My AU)

Splatoon 2

Callie is found by Agent 4. The fight goes on as normal. Marie arrives with her low tide ink. However, she misses and Callie sneaks up behind her, forcing the hypnomask on her face. Agent 4, losing confidence, continues to fight, without the support of Marie. When it gets to the final stage, Agent 4 gets launched off the ride rails by DJ Octavio’s fist. Minutes away from death, Octavio gives Four a choice. Die, or join him. Not wanting to die, or have the pain of leaving both Callie and Marie on their own, Four decides they’ll take the latter option, and soon realizes the Octarians aren’t too bad.

Octo Expansion

As the elevator gets stuck, Hijacked Agent 3 is waiting for Eight. The fight goes on as normal, except Pearl and Marina are waiting on the surface. They already know what’s going to happen. All they need to do is wait for Eight to win against Three and carry out the plan to stop Tartar. But they don’t. Eight lost. Three takes them to be sanitized, as Cuttlefish breaks free. Meanwhile, Pearl and Marina are waiting anxiously for Eight’s arrival. It’s only when they realize… That it’s too late. Pearl is hit full force, leaving Marina distraught. She vows to make it right. She has to save Pearl. She has to save Eight. She has to save everyone. Splatoon 3

Cuttlefish is there to help Neo in the Crater. By now he has researched the ooze and has made a cure for it, hence why Neo can respawn. But by the time Cuttlefish is captured, Neo only has a jar of it left. Oh, and Deep Cut bully the heck out of Neo when they introduce themselves. They would’ve got more from the Squid Sisters… If they weren’t missing. This jar lasts Neo for a good while… Until right before the Frye boss kettle. The ooze is actually rather comforting… If it wasn’t for the fact that Neo was being turned into nothing more than a savage fuzzy inkling/octoling under the control of Mr Grizz… It would be pretty cute. Neo manages to capture Deep Cut and bring them all to Mr Grizz where he fuzzifies all of them. Cuttlefish dies and the plan goes through. Half of Earth is now fuzzy. At least the other half is ok… For now…

Side Order

Marina has completed the making of the Memverse. She has tracked down Eight and has put them in the position of the beta tester. She would’ve given them a companion… If Pearl was ok… Agent 4 was also tracked down and given the offer of being the Spire Defender. Which they accepted because Octavio had no real orders for them to complete. Agent 8, being sanitized, knew all the combat they needed to complete the Spire. But their consciousness along with Marina’s and others… Created Order. Which essentially possessed Marina and threw a spanner in the works. By the time Order had completed its plan, Eight and Four were both partially greyscaled, allowing some free will to remain intact. Not that it really mattered, as the other half of the world was now just a meaningless grey.

Loyalties

Agent 3: Tartar.

Agent 4: While being partially greyscaled, they’re still mainly loyal to Octavio. However, they do not want to upset Order, so serves it too.

Agent 8: Order, Tartar. Serves them both equally. Takes shifts inside the memverse, and shifts in the Metro.

Neo 3: Mr Grizz.

Hii! I've got two questions: how are the remaining domes structured? How many octarians and octolings are still around?

Hey bestie 👀 Thank you for answering my plea for an ask🙏

1. There are only two domes left in operation, one of which is Octopia, whilst the other one contains all the houses and farms needed to sustain the remaining Octarians. There's also a small, newly dug out dome which acts as a base for Four. Here's a very basic map to visualise it

I tried to do a more detailed one but I still can't draw backgrounds that well 😅😭

Essentially, Octopia looks exactly how level 2 of Octo Canyon looks in game, except all the platforms have been shuffled around so that everyone can traverse it easily. But the general look is still the same.

Side note: This is where I got the name of the fic. Cuz the level is called 'Welcome to Octopia'. Get it? Aha. Haha. I'm so funny and creative guys trust

The other dome is less fun, and just has all the essentials like houses and a (makeshift) hospital. It looks kinda like the settlements found at the bottom of certain levels in Octo Canyon.

See those houses down there? Yeah. I think most people don't realise that it's not just the lore that makes the Octarians a developed and civilised species, it's literally in the games. I imagine that the levels we play are situated high above Octarian society so that they could act as a last defence against an Inkling invasion, which also proves how propaganda really affects the beliefs of everyone trapped underground. That's just a headcannon tho!

Every other dome has been all but destroyed. Literally. Every. Single. One.

I mean, that's what happens when two of the campaigns are all about stealing electricity from the Octarians!! Yeah, they stole it first, but they're just trying to survive because they lost a stupid war 100 years ago and are still suffering because of it

*Ahem* Anyways!

2. There's only about 200 individuals altogether, as most Octarians have been splatted or sanitised/fuzzified, and most Octolings have migrated to the surface.

Whilst all sub-species of Octarians are intelligent, Octolings are more autonomous and don't necessarily need a leader to guide them, so there are only about 20-ish Octolings in Octopia. These are the people who were so influenced by propaganda that they refused to leave or the one's that just waited too long to do so and are now trapped once more.

The remaining Octarians are ones who weren't in the army when Grizz attacked, meaning some of them may have military experience and were injured so they weren't taken. Lots of them do want to leave but, as I mentioned earlier, they believe they need someone to lead them, and so far Four has proven she will do anything to protect them, so... they remain content for now.

Hey, not really an update, but a scrapped section of "A Maid's Pair of Shears"!

Working on the second draft now, but long story short, I was working on the subplot with Frye and Paper a bit. And the Fryper crackship demons possessed me.

Frye looked through a scrap pile. “Wow! I never knew how much scrap you had! We can do A LOT with this! The universe will be saved in no time!” She continued to eagerly scavenge through Paper’s old metal and junk, while Paper himself watched her. This whole situation felt so surreal to him. Sure, he’s been through some weird stuff before, like, SUPER weird stuff, but for some reason, this felt different than the usual crazy adventures he, Rock and Scissors had.

Frye leaned up for a second. “Hey, ever since you gave Scissors a concussion or something with that wrench, you’ve been weirdly quiet.” She smirked a little. “What is it, guilt’s gettin’ to ya?” Paper smiled back. “Heh. As if.”  He slowly frowned again. “...It’s just that…. Doesn’t this whole thing feel… unsettlingly weird to you?” Frye listened further to his words. “Huh? What’s making you think that?” Paper sighed and thought a bit before speaking again. “Think about it. I know you’re a bandit who's probably been on wild expeditions and heists, and I’ve been through crazy stuff too, like going on a high-speed action adventure for key limes, and thinking I was gonna be killed when I sent Rock a GLITTER BOMB.” Frye’s eyes widened as she grinned at the thought of those scenarios. “Wow. Those examples alone sound absolutely insane.” “I know!” Paper facepalmed and groaned. He got up and paced around while continuing to explain how he felt. “Right now with the danger we’re all facing, I should feel like this is fairly normal with what I've been through…. But, something keeps nagging at me about how this all isn’t as normal and the things I’m feeling now are justified.. I don’t know why it’s happening, but it is…” He sat down and frowned.

Frye walked to where he was sitting and sat down next to him. “Paper… Let me ask you something. Do you think I feel like this is normal?” Paper looked at the inkling in confusion. “...What?” “Listen, just answer me. It’s important.” She told him, crossing her arms. Paper thought about an answer. “Well… Of course I do! You’re probably thinking that this is nothing compared to what happened in your life. You might be thinking that what I’m feeling is dumb!” Frye smirked slightly. “Well, you’re wrong.” Paper stopped and looked at Frye as if she had two heads. “Wait… You’re feeling what I feel? …HOW!?” Frye laughed at his shock. “Well, in a more positive way, if you will. Listen, me and my crew have searched for treasure in an underground utopia, tried to beat a kid up to get that treasure… and lost… were GIVEN the treasure when they were done with it, and to top it all off, we all fought a giant space bear who tried to fuzzify the world! And that all was RECENT.” She continued to laugh while Paper stared at her in absolute bafflement. “Then, this all should feel normal to you! And what you just told me sounds WAY crazier than all the crazy things that happened to me combined! How is that possible?”

Frye calmed herself down and explained something to Paper. “Look, you can go through what feels like the same thing a million times and still feel like it’s something entirely new, and that’s okay! It’s just a thing about life, and that being that it’s a big, wacky journey and every day’s a new adventure!” She smiled while thinking about her words. “...And the way I see it sometimes, it's not about the experience… It’s about the memories you make with it, no matter how similar it may be!” Her expression darkened for a bit. “So much similar…” She shook off those dark thoughts rather quickly. “But, the point is that none of this is normal, and there’s something wrong with your life if you think it is. Haha!” 

Frye smiled at the scroll, while he stared at her in offended confusion. “Didn’t you just say what I was feeling wasn’t dumb?” She laughed at him again. “...Look, I don’t even know if you’re trying to help me anymore. What’s the real point?” He said in irritation. Frye laughed and laughed… but eventually calmed down again. “Well… I guess the REAL real point of this is that life is meant to be unexpected no matter what! Something must be wrong with your brain if you think everything in it will feel the same and follow a plan, where’s the fun in that? I can already tell you’re on a wild roller-coaster in your world, and that should be fun considering all that goes on in it! Every day seems like an adventure for you and your gang, and I’m a bit jealous!” Paper listened to Frye carefully and chuckled at her last comment. “Really?” “Yeah! All I do during the week is do a newscast which people don’t even bother to actually watch. Day jobs are so boring…” The inkling shook her head at her day job while the scroll continued to laugh at her words.

Paper looked up at Frye with a warm smile. “...You send a lot of mixed messages… But, that did kinda make me feel better. Thanks.” Frye turned her head and playfully waved him off. “Eh, it was nothing. Glad I could help.” In a quick second, she sprung back up on her feet. “Now let’s go search through more scrap! And then get tetanus shots. We don’t know how dirty it is! Ha!” She leaped back into the scrap pile while Paper gazed at her in awe. She was so weird and goofy towards most things, but she was oddly wise at the same time.

starting with a big one: SUPER MARIO GLITCHY PAPER JAM

Desti in this one was formerly an octarian soldier and also rival to Agent 4 aka Meggy in this au, and as such had an impact on the bright eyed and bushy tailed newbie (Meggy had to reiterate... so many strategies because of her, one of the most annoying yet joyful eras of her life) she was also DJ Octavio's grand daughter so... you can imagine the conflict that would sprout from that after her untimely death in anime island

then we have smth i like to refer to the Triple Dose AU where Meggy get's the big three of shenanigans in splatoon (Sanitization, Hypnogoggles and Fuzzification, there was also a bit of grayscaling but that was temporary), Desti ends up filling in for Meggy during the Sanitization era since it was assumed Meggy died in the explosion (when really she got kidnapped by a crazy telephone) so she ends up getting flashbanged by the stuff that should have had happened to Meggy (who was being the lab rat equivalent to the world's worse blunt rotation)

Then there's that one off au (which i forgot to post) called Double Fuzz, where Desti and Meggy get fuzzified by Grizz (who used Desti's corpse as Fuzzy Ooze patient zero but thats another can of worms, and straight up kidnapped Meggy) they're stuck at the hip with Desti being a bear-cat-monkey-octoling amalgamation thing and meggy being a tiger-inkling-human mutant, and they have to figure out to escape from grizz and who they once were cause of amnesia shenanigans

Then there's SuperBowserGlitchy which has Desti being the rival to the Koopa King's own adoptive Daughter Meggy Spletzer (and also dating her but no one needs to know that) since Bowser unintentionally ended up blocking the sword of the Sephiroth that would have killed Desti with his shell

Finally we have my tari and desti swap au Animeta where Tari is the one that get's stabbed instead of Desti, (she's not dead technically- just stuck in cyberspace) Desti is currently working at SMG3's cafe and is a surprisingly good at making pastries (which helps in sells a lot) and is dating Meggy (and is also housemates with her), she ends up filling in the role for Tari would have through the years before 2024 pre-western spaghetti (where Tari is finally able to do smth bcs of the simulation being her playing field and stuff)

Because I have brainrot and am writing a big ol’ OC story, I’ve decided to open up asks for any of my characters! Below will be some rules for asks, and under the cut will be brief descriptions of all the characters available for questions, because I don’t expect anyone to remember all of them or go scrolling through all my posts to figure out who is who.

This will be updated if/when I create more OCs and their references are posted.

* You can ask them any questions, give them things, dare them, and other stuff!

* Please specify if you are asking a certain character(s), so I don’t get confused on who to have answer. If I’m not sure who it’s meant for, it’ll likely go unanswered.

* The only things I won’t allow are NSFW questions. As a general rule, if you wouldn’t ask a person irl about this/to do this, don’t ask them. If it's really bad, you might end up blocked.

* If you have questions about my characters/story meant for me, you can ask those as well! Please just specify if it’s a question for me! Please note that questions for me will likely be answered before questions for characters, as I plan to draw characters' answers.

Katrina: red haired Inkling. Big of heart, dumb of ass. Loves fried food. Usually gets herself injured in stupid ways doing stupid things. Agent 4 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon. Older sister of Rook, and best friends with Neil, Lora, and Hydra. Queer platonic partner of Capri.

Neil: teal haired Inkling. Stoic and serious. Keeps Katrina in check (while arguing with her all the while). Always dragged into doing Katrina’s stupid ideas. Best friends with Katrina, Lora, and Hydra. Agent 5 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon.

Waffles: yellow and purple haired Inkling. A fun-loving and naive kid who probably shouldn’t be allowed to participate in Turf War but does so anyways. Will befriend you (threat). The younger brother of Pancakes, and friend of Hydra.

Lora: purple haired Octoling. Aspiring fashionista and the median for Neil and Katrina. Sweetest person you’ll ever meet, but also a bit harshly sisterly. Former Octarian army soldier turned spy and Agent 6 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon. Best friends with Katrina, Neil and Hydra.

Pancakes: yellow and purple haired Inkling. Seemingly untrusting and cold, but actually a big softie who just doesn’t really understand how to express his emotions. Giant tactician nerd who rigorously studies Turf War maps. Older brother of Waffles, and boyfriend of Hydra.

Capri: orange haired Inkling. Seemingly stoic and serious, but really they’re just tired. Secretly mischievous and silly. Probably watches whatever the Splatoon equivalent of TikTok is all day. Former Agent 3 and Captain of the New Squidbeak Splatoon. Queer platonic partner of Katrina. Friends with Neil, Lora, Hydra, and Harper.

Hydra: (he belongs to @austin-the-creechur, but as he’s very important to my character’s stories, he is available for questions!) cyan haired Octoling. Loud, extroverted, and confrontational, but has a heart of gold. Loyal friend and anarchist. Raised in the Splatlands. Has a Smallfry companion lovingly named “Little Buddy”. Agent 3.0 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon. Best friends with Katrina, Neil, and Lora. Friends with Waffles and Rudy. Romantic partner of Pancakes.

Egg: light orange haired cephalopod. A formerly fuzzified cephalopod, who was rescued by the New Squidbeak Splatoon and later cured. Shy and timid, but tries to be friendly and will probably do anything you ask without questioning it. Friends with Capri, Katrina, Neil, Lora, and Hydra.

Rook: red haired Inkling. Raised by the Salmonids before being reunited with her older sister Katrina, and now resides in Splatsville with her Smallfry friend, Puck. Local "I-lived-under-a-rock" who doesn’t understand inkfish culture. Takes everything too seriously, but is trying to be a little more lax, as per requested by her sister. Friends with Neil, Lora, and Hydra.

Kouser: light yellow haired Inkling. Lives in the desert of the Splatlands that surrounds Splatsville. Another person who doesn’t understand Splatsville culture. Runs on a “dog eat dog world” mentality, and regularly mugs people for food and money. Self conscious about their scar. Has history with Hydra.

Harper: blue haired Octoling. Sassy lil bitch with a talent for rap and music. Will do what she believes is right until the bitter end, and will fight for it too. Cares deeply for her friends and loves doing things with other people. Hates being alone. Throws herself into risky situations without thinking first. DJs for a job as DJ D33P-C. Has seen The Horrors. Agent 8 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon. Friends with Capri, Katrina, Lora, and Neil.

Rudy: teal and pink haired Octoling. Part of a motorbike gang. Sassy and rude to everyone, including her friends, but is only joking towards people she actually likes. Holds grudges like her life depends on it. Fiercely protective of her friends, and is not afraid to throw hands at anything. Friends with Hydra.

Chipper: orange haired Octoling. Runs a restaurant named Aloha Eats, which Katrina is a regular of. Uses various Salmonid ingredients in her food, collected by striking a deal with and working at Grizzco occasionally. Technically doesn’t have a license for it, but can provide ability-boosting food and beverages.

How would this work in game

So! How I would make these fuzzy Ink fish work in a game standpoint- well, genuinely, it would be very different- so i would understand if it weren't actually possible for it to exist in Splatoon 3. In this idea, I'm mostly going to focus on Octolings and Inklings, cause to be frank, I'm not sure as of rn how the octarians would work

Different combat

Given the fact that these are supposed to be mammals, I can't imagine them really using gun, but how would they fight against the enemy? Wouldn't that make it too easy to shoot them from afar without them attacking? Yes and no!

Fuzzy inkfish would be separated by categories, those with bones and those with not, those without bones are able to still swim in ink and often will still have the weapons they once had, but will usually use them a bit wrong (like just absolutely beating the crap out of you with a gun as I'd it where a fancy stick) kinda like the salmonoids in that aspect, but being able to swim, throw bombs and so on, just using the weapons wrongly, that, or attacking you with teeth and claws

Those with bones will be actually faster than an ink fish when running, but a bit slower when it comes to a race between swimming and running, they are able to still use ink though, as it oozes from their body (like Mr. Grizz!) and are able to throw slashes of ink from their claws (like Mr. Grizz-) and can use ink to slide across it, depending on how fast they where running before hand means how fast they will glide though the ink, they will be faster than an inkfish when gliding through ink compared to their swimming, but they will very much struggle with changing directions or right corners, which is what you can use to maneuver away from them

Fuzzy ink fish can usually jump higher than a normal inkling, but aren't able to super jump, they also can't swim through ink, so they are slower at climbing walls, because they are literally climbing on them instead of swimming through ink

Fuzzy ink fish with bones are kind of the "Elites", given they have supers just like a normal ink fish, one of these powers is the killer wail, that they can do by literally shooting this beam out of their mouth (cause howling I guess-) they are still able to booyah bomb, it's just called something different, given the fact that they growl and hiss n what not

In the story mode, little buddy would be a bit more important in game, given the fact that these mostly mindless animals are most likely going to want and eat the lil fish, so using him will often be a very good way to keep their attention elsewhere (they might make very quick job of him though) so treat it as a game of keep away, throwing little buddy and calling him at the last minute to not have him as someone's dinner

Lore wise, I like to imagine that later in, they find a cure for all the fuzzy inkfish, allowing them to have their memory and "humanity" restored, but most changes to have them back to normal might not completely "fix" an fuzzified victim, they might retain animal like claws or paw pads, cat eyes, a bunny nose, sometimes even ears and so on, furry can usually be removed if they take air loss supplements, even with all of this, they might retain some animal like behaviors, purring or being wildly entertained by sticks, liking to be scratched under the chin or behind the ears, or randomly really wanting to cannibalize one of their fellow ink fish- (such hungry desires can be easily fixed if you visit a barber show and ask for the trimmings, eat the tentacle pieces nobody is using)

Those that got bones though- well, they will be a bit more animalistic, sometimes they will have moments in which they respond like an animal, especially with anger or excitement, they also will have to retail any tail that they grew, given the fact that its part of their spine, they are more likely to need a higher doze of supplements given their bodies wish to continue growing hair and whiskers or whatever they grew before, a lot of angst potential here guys-

Splatoon headcanon- Fuzzy inkfish

Okay so! In splatoon 3, return of the mammalians, I was sorely disappointed when said mammalians where just...hairy and brainwashed, literally that's it, which had let me down so bad, given the fact that slight alteration of character model and brainwashing had already happened before (sanitization) and genuinely, the occasions haven't changed much behavior wise, so this is how I have headcanoned what should have actually happened in splatoon 3!

Behavior

Given the fact that the fuzzy ink fish are now mammalian, depending on the inkfish, they might hiss, scratch, bite, and attack like a wild animal, really depending on the type of animal they are based off of, I imagine most would be bearlike because it is Mr Grizz that made this happen, but imagine, a fuzzy inkling with Spirulas growing out of their head like sheep horns, completely ramming a another inkling a good couple of feet away! Making interesting gameplay! And given Japan seems to love cat girls (can't blame them) give a octoling some cat ears and very agile and bam! Happy fans- (I will probably talk more about behaviors in a different post)

They also do not use weapons! Given the fact they are mammals, they use their animal like features instead to fully attack [this is what will be explored in a different post]

Body

I need bullet points for these because there is a lot I wanna go through

Mammals aren't just fluffy creatures, they also have these cool nest things called bones and warm blood

So fuzzy ink fish will first experience "fever" like symptoms as their ink slowly heats up, and over a long period of time (depending on how much furry goop they have been exposed to and how long they have been a fuzzy inkfish) and go into a hibernation like state, when they come back to, their body will have had the changes, first, they are not hot blooded and have furr in their tentacles

Later on, their body will slowly shift to a more animal like appearance, like hands slowly enlongating and growing large claws, more hunched like posture to more easily run in four legs, growing new teeth that are more mammalian in nature (could be herbivore, could be carnivore) some will grow more furry along their extremities as well, some will even grow more animal like ears and eyes

At this stage, most of these bodily changes are still reversible with enough medical equipment, as the ink fish are still majorly cartilage and ink, so they can be reformed (kinda how they can still change into a squid or octopus)

Yet, when their bones start to grow, these changes are mostly irreversible, bones will form after a good couple of months, this will make fuzzy inkfish tanks compared to normal ink fish, the skeletal structure has downsides however, like the inability to turn into a squid/octopus anymore, given the fact that you can't really shapeshift into something as small as a squid, where would all those bones go??

But their inability to shapeshift smaller does not mean they cannot shapeshift at all, by or consuming the fuzzy ooze or ink, their body will grow in size, and they take a much more animal like shape, like how a human where to turn into a werewolf, in this form, they do high amounts of damage by the swings of their claws

Their bones and thicker skin would also do that one think most inklings and octolings can't do, get in water, cuz let's be honest, unless the oceans are actual acid, having a body with thicker skin, bones and muscle tissue, probably makes these Fuzzy Inklings/octolings able to actually swim!

Also, when their skeletal structure is growing, they will likely also grow tails (you can't have tails otherwise, yah need the spindle bones to make it, no-?)
