HOW I THINK THIS IS JUST THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS EDDIE DIAZ GAY ARC PT. 1
You know that you love a character so much that you have all the explanations of why he's acting the way is doing now
Yes the cheating part sucks but if we see trough it
Eddie's not cheating Marisol with another woman
He's cheating with a woman he remembers his ex dead wife
And that's just realive how much he still proccessing Shanon death and he didn’t do it in the right way at first when he was supposed to talk about it with Frank in s3
However if we saw why he didn’t that's just a scene it comes in my mind and how it's important understand that maybe Eddie is just using a doppleganger of his wife as an exuse to something he faced at a special bachelor party 👀👀
Let's go first:
1)In s3 Bobby said to Eddie to talk about his feelings for grieving Shanon because Eddie was self distructing himself with the illegal fights -> Eddie talks about it with Frank but then he said to Buck that therapy wasn’t for him and then this scene happens:
Tumblr media
And what Eddie said after?
Tumblr media
Yeah. He didn’t need anymore the therapy because he was happy with the people he have now in that moment (his son and Buck)
2) In this season we saw Eddie talking with Bobby again about the Nun thing and Eddie is afraid and confused about why he can't commit to any of his past relantionships with women and why now he's having Chatolic Guilt regards Marisol -> Bobby said to him that Eddie doesn’t have a problem of commit to certain things (👀👀) and one of them is Shanon but Eddie always said that he married her just because of Christopher and he had some kind of duty towards her
Tumblr media
He doesn’t regret being married to her but he never said that he actually was in love with her and that's a thing that even Michael felt when he married with Athena. Michael never regreted to marry her and have his children with Athena but we know from s1 that he's a gay man
Tumblr media
But maybe just because Eddie now is scared that he will never commit to a woman. As with Marisol. He's just pretend that in this doppleganger he can find what he's missing as a female role for Christopher but as Bobby said to him he already commit in other things in his life like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(😫😫😫😫)
3) All the dialogue with Marisol last episode i think he meant something. She asked him if Eddie was okay and even though Eddie said that he's fine. Marisol asked him again if it was a truth or a lie. And even though Eddie said it was truth we know he's not okay. He's again romanticed his marriage with Marisol out of blue because he just saw her in another woman and his false memories of her are just coming through his mind because he wants to get attached to that feeling. Because in his mind he was happy with Shanon and his marriage with her was perfect. Like the scene with Marisol that just show how him, Christopher and Marisol looked as the perfect ready made family. Like with someone else:
Tumblr media
But we know he had panics attacks just of the thought of him, Ana and Christopher being a family and maybe this time is trying to not have them since he learned from therapy how to control them. But why he's trying to pretend to be in a perfect relantionship?
If we thinks about it Eddie seems more like he's living in his own telenovela for how the scenes went with Kim and Shanon but that's a way to not copy with something that it's happening in reality like the fact that he didn’t want Marisol to live with him anymore and he was having sexual problems with her after he figure it out she was a nun. Then he talked about it with Buck and he said to him that he wanted to break up with her but then what made him change his mind?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yep. It’s just took Buck coming out to him to made him rethink about his relantionship with Marisol and made her moving out. Eddie of course supports him. Buck is his best friend. But support someone and see with your eyes that your bestfriend is indeed bisexual is something else. Because Eddie loves Buck as Ryan said he loves him to the core. But see Buck with Tommy just makes him a little pissed off
Tumblr media
You can see it from how just an hug made him bite his lips with an angry mood and also what he said after just proves how much he's jealous of them. Then he spent all night making killing eye to Tommy as he did something wrong and we saw even Eddie watching Tommy yawing as if he's interest in what Tommy is doing. Later everyone leaves incluse Tommy, Buck and Eddie spent all night togheter being closer than ever. And we saw how much they were connecting their neurons togheter and in someway i think Eddie got that with no one he had ever have this much of connection. And that's why i think he's scared to analyze that emotion and he wants to hide it because he doesn’t get why he's jealous of Tommy and why he knows that nobody could ever be Buck

Eddie and Buck are clearly in a different party so... what if they walked by a pride party of some kind and drunk Buck yelled "Hey, I'm one of you" and got invited to join and Eddie followed saying "And I'm an ally!"
I WOULD DIE LAUGHING

i'm not sayin nothin, but eddie was thriving when he was hanging out with his new bud tommy on a regular basis but now buck is getting his tommy time meanwhile eddie is getting himself into a soap opera situation with hallucinations or doppleganger uncanniness cheating on his supposedly serious girlfriend with a woman who looks like his dead wife. he defs needs to go back to therapy but also he needs to maybe swear off dating for a while and just 'hang out with the boys'.

This explains so much:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Firstly, why her name is Kim. Secondly, the ultimate result of this storyline - which is Eddie working through the blame and guilt he feels for Shannon's death using Kim (because she ultimately is a plot device) but not before he ultimately tries turning her into Shannon (actively symbolized by him holding the 'S' key chain) which I think the people in his life (Chris, Buck, his parents) will realize and call him out for. But unlike in Vertigo, it may perhaps be Kim who confronts Eddie rather than the other way around especially after she learns he was seeing her behind another woman's back.
Eddie ultimately has to confront the "type" of women he is interested in, "why" he's interested in them, and if it is not only psychologically healthy (spoiler: it's not) but also if it is truly what he wants and, if not, what does he want?
Finally, to take a look at Vertigo on its head - it is the condition in which a person has the sensation of movement or of surrounding objects moving when they are not. I think Eddie has this, emotionally speaking. He believes he is moving on from Shannon's death because he is dating again not realizing he is searching for another Shannon showing that he has not moved on he is STUCK.

HOW I THINK THIS IS JUST THE FIRST STEP TO EDDIE DIAZ GAY ARC PT. 2
As I said in the previous post, Eddie is scared of his feelings towards Buck and Tommy and he doesn’t know what to do with that information and that's why he's trying to pretend with Marisol and he's living in his own telenovela with Kim but again we know who Eddie trust his son more than anyone else and the proof is just the scene before Eddie goes to the date with Kim:
Tumblr media
Very husbandisms of them. Also, the fact that Eddie lied to Buck about which girl was going out with. It's very telling. Because why don't say to your best friend that you find the copy of your ex dead wife and you wants to go out with her and cheat on your current girlfriend? Because he doesn’t want to get why this is crazy and delusional and doesn’t make any sense. And it's wrong for Marisol. Because again he's living in his own bubble and he doesn’t want someone to make some sense into him. And Buck as Bobby is one of the person he trust most and they can make him understand the truth of why he's acting the way he is. But Eddie doesn’t want the truth. He's not ready for the truth. But he can't escape from the truth because:
Tumblr media
Like...this is the first time that Eddie and Buck are alone sober with Christopher and Eddie knows Buck is bi and it just took a compliment from him to make Eddie blush (🤡🤡) as then he do with Kim at their date:
Tumblr media
And then what Eddie do from Buck compliment? He just goes to kiss his son and goes straight to the date. As he was trying to escape from Buck loft (and we know that Eddie was supposed to be at his date in 30 minutes as he said to Buck. So he could stayed for a bit but then i don't know if it's because of traffic or other stuff. He just go away)
Like again he's trying to escape from the reality and goes to his telenovela bubble to pretend nothing is wrong with him. While when he was drunk with Buck he just stayed all night with him like this:
Tumblr media
And we know that when people are drunk their true self comes out as:
Tumblr media
Did you see the raimbow light and Eddie checking Buck ass? Because that's what i see (🤡🏳️‍🌈). A rainbow light that comes out even from Buck after he kissed Tommy and Buck understand he's more than an Ally:
Tumblr media
Because really the lights were strange in this scene with Buck but they want to tell something as they want to tell something for Eddie too. The lights on Buck are first blue and green as in the mlm flag:
Tumblr media
Then the second light are red and yellow as the other colors of the rainbow (because he doesn’t just like men):
Tumblr media
While Eddie he has just all the colors of the raimbow because as we saw he rejects all the women who were around him and goes straight (gay) to Buck (🏳️‍🌈)
Also, Buck line when he said he does check hot guys ass and in this scene Eddie is checking Buck ass because there's not straight explanation of why his eyes are looking down to something (👀👀). And we know now Buck is bi but Eddie?
Eddie is just gay

I think it'd be great if Eddie gets so unidentifiably jealous of Buck and Tommy that he goes out one night, get hammered, and hooks up with another man which sets him off on his journey to understand himself and his feelings.

recontextualizing this story through the lens of buck/eddie and what it means for them, is like. it's so interesting because recently, i got an anon that asked me (paraphrasing) if i thought 9-1-1 would actually "go there" with buck and eddie as individuals, and that three main characters discovering their queerness would be "too much" for the general audience. and, like, not withstanding that it's actually true to life — that queer people can and do naturally gravitate toward each other even when we aren't out / passing / aware of our sexualities at the time — it's also just like. the belief (or disbelief) that 911 wouldn't "go there" with their stories also comes with this inherent assumption that there's only one way to tell a queer discovery story.
like. when michael came out in season 1, he was already at the end of his journey. he had already walked through the self-hate and forced closeting and came out on the other side to self acceptance. when we meet michael, he is a queer man, a gay man (because the word is important), who has already stepped into self actualization and is ready to live his truth. this is not the story 911 is telling with buck.
and then with eddie, you have this character that is introduced with the idea of being perfect, as ryan said, of having it all together, only for the audience to realize he's not. only for the audience to realize that he's broken and cracked on the inside and that a lot of it stems from war. but most of it? most of it doesn't. most of it stems from his father, and from how he was raised. raised to shut it down, to swallow things whole even if they hurt, even if they make him bleed. he was told to keep it all quiet, repress repress repress. and so. i know this is an unpopular opinion, but to that end, i don't think an explicit queer discovery storyline is necessary for him, in the sense that, subtextually, i think it's already happened. season 5 was very much eddie's unrepression arc. we dug deep into the things that make eddie diaz, eddie diaz. and a lot of that was war. violence. chaos."warzones are my thing." but if that was all that his arc was meant to be, why have it end with a conversation with his father? they could have played that arc out in so many different ways.
for one, they could have had mills still be alive. they could have had her and eddie reconnect. they could have had her and eddie have a conversation where she shoulders some of the weight that eddie's been putting on himself and have him settle into the peace of the realization that he's not alone in this specific thing, that he never has been, that other people survived what he did and that he can find solace in them. but the writers didn't do that. they took it back to his childhood, to the root of where eddie diaz began and they said, this is where you need to go. this is what you need to address before you can heal and move on. so that conversation with his dad that culminated in him choosing wellness, in him choosing happiness, in him choosing safety in his body for himself has very much always read to me as queer acceptance even if not explicit (due to the assumed barriers that were placed on that story at the time).
eddie has always been with women, eddie has always liked being with women, so i'd be shocked if he's ever even thought about the nuances of his sexuality. but his unrepression in season 5, to me, has always made him open to the possibility of falling into whatever comes next, whatever that looks like.
this is also not the story they're telling with buck.
(as a side note, i'd just like to say that queer subtext is still queer existence. subtext is how our stories have been told for generations, well before we were able to take up space on the page, and subtext is still a wholly valid and beautiful way of telling a queer story. please don't forget that).
so then, finally, we get to buck, and he's so very new at this. so very green he may as well be a blade of grass on a country club golf course. and so, despite the fact that there have already been two queer storylines prior, this is the first time in 9-1-1 (and tv!) history, that we have ever gotten to see an unplanned queer character discover who he is at this intimate, detailed level. we get to see buck's story unfold in real time, we get to learn about who this actualized version of himself is, as he is realizing it, and we get to know and dissect the layers and nuances, the ebbs and flows of his sexuality as he's taking himself apart and seeing what's underneath.
friends. this is the story they've always needed to tell.
and so, when i think about buck and eddie, and i think about their progression toward a romantic relationship and what that would look like, realistically and in the eyes of the audience, buck has really always been the missing key. we've talked about it before — who he is, who he was, has in no way been ready for eddie on multiple levels. whether it was because of his insecurity, his lack of place in the world, etc, buck has always been (for lack of a better word) too immature for eddie. eddie is a single father. he doesn't have time to play games, and though he will always love and reassure buck when he needs it, he doesn't have time to heal buck for him. nor should he. so buck was the only one who canonically, canonically, needed to be yanked from point a to point z.
and. it's like everyone's said, even before the season began — buck has been on a hamster wheel, buck has been stuck in a rut, yadda yadda yadda, which means that, as far as the audience was concerned, what always was for buck (women) is what always would have been. and there was nothing in canon, nothing concrete to disprove them from believing so. so we needed him to fall into something, not just radical, but sometime new.
and when i think about buck, and when i think about eddie, and when i think about their stories both as individuals and together, buck has, realistically, been the only real stopping point. at least with eddie, when the time is right and buck/eddie go canon, we, the audience, can go back in time and we can look at the way he came into himself and settled into his identity as a person, as a man, and say, like, oh okay, this is the moment. you know? we don't need the writers to take our hands and guide us through the same processes buck is experiencing because eddie's already had his ah moment, he's already experienced the moment where he decides that his life and his needs and his joy and his liberation are just as beautiful and valuable and worthy like everyone else's.
so when people ask, like, "would 9-1-1 really go there with three queer discovery arcs?" it's just like. well yes. they already have. we've already there. in fact, we're well into the third and final act. buck, eddie, and the audience, are almost ready — as in, actively ready — for each other. and yes, sure, even after the meat of this arc has passed, there will still be some things buck and eddie need to learn — specifically, they will need to learn that, not only do they have feelings for each other, but that feelings for each other is actually an option — but. for all intents and purposes, this is the crescendo before the final chord. this is it. and the thought that we've been here, that we've witnessed these three beautiful queer storylines unfold with these three beautiful characters (two of which are gentle, loving, present men of color) makes me entirely too emotional for words. tbh.

things from the tsunami arc that altered my brain chemistry irrevocably and eternally:
buck's hand twisted in christopher's shirt pre-wave
you're gonna be okay, kid and the hand on buck's face
the way buck cups christopher's head when he's finally got him in his arms
and the way he clings to christopher as soon as they're up on the fire truck for the rest of the episodes, always keeping chris nestled against his side or tucked under his chin whenever he's not saving people
how he freezes when he hears christopher fall in and just Knows its chris
buck finding christopher's glasses
the fact that we see the moment buck cuts himself and he doesn't even react because he's too heartbroken to feel anything else besides the grief
do i even need to mention buck carrying himself through most of LA on willpower alone?
or the black tent?
or buck calling maddie and not even worrying about telling eddie, just worrying about christopher, until he sees him at the VA hospital?
or how eddie nods as buck stammers through his explanation like he believes that its not buck's fault even as his heart is breaking over losing his child?
or the way buck hands eddie christopher's glasses?
or he was looking for buck?
how about the way eddie presses his forehead to christopher's temple?
and the Look between buck and eddie? buck, disbelieving, relieved, just utterly and completely relieved because whatever happens next, even if he never gets to see his diaz boys again, at least christopher is alive. and eddie, disbelieving, relieved, entirely and wondrously in awe of the man that kept his son safe and alive despite a tsunami.
and buck collapsing because finally, finally his job is done. nothing else matters now.
not to mention!!! the After
wait for me to come home my beloved <3
buck's whole voiceover
the way chris walks into the loft and rests his head against buck's stomach, trusting him to wrap him in a hug, and the way buck hesitates like he's not sure he's allowed
eddie pushing in, eddie, the strong silent type, filling the silence that buck would usually to try to drown (poor choice of words, i admit) out whatever thoughts are going through buck's head as he tries to object to being left alone
eddie's instantaneous, easy switch from nonchalant teasing to serious reassuring
two men five centimetres apart because they are gay!
eddie's hand on buck's shoulder and the fucking thumb on his neck... kill me :D
eddie being honest and vulnerable about his parenting
i love him enough to never stop trying and i know you do too because of course eddie has just had more than enough evidence of that, and not just evidence but tsunami-proof evidence that buck would quite literally go to the ends of the earth for christopher, but this quote, buddie or not, links buck to christopher, to that co-parent role, indefinitely and irrefutably
eddie's little comment about buck losing weight (sir... why are you paying so much attention 🤨)
and FUCK, perhaps the worst of them all, eddie pausing in the doorway, one hand on the doorframe, eyes down as he says buck's name and that little moment of hesitation before he looks up and says thank you. for not giving up.
