Sapphic Reading Challenge 2021

So, every year fellow author Jae puts together a different challenge (last year was F/F Fiction Crosswords) and this year, she’s doing a reading challenge, with different levels depending on how many books you want to read. But all of the books should fall into one of the fifty categories listed on the challenge page.

Anyway, I figured that I should let everyone know which of my books fall under which categories, if you’re looking for books to read to take part.

So, here are the categories that some of my books might fit into (and for reference, most of my series have free Book Ones or prequels, and many later books can be purchased through a Pay What You Want system if you buy direct from me):

Category Seven - Character with a disability or mental illness: A book with protagonist who has a physical disability, a chronic illness, or a mental disorder.

In Ember Academy for Young Witches, the main character is injured from a curse in the first book and that injury causes her chronic pain going forward. And if you’re okay with reading through a chunk of a series to get to the characters having physical disabilities, in The Aspects, a character loses a leg in Book Three and becomes a PoV character from that point on and in Book Ten of Freya Snow, Freya injures and loses most of her mobility in her right hand. (Also Freya pretty clearly has anxiety and depression but they’re not addressed outright until the final book.)

Category Nine - One-night stand to forever: The romance starts with a one-night stand, a fling, or a friends-with-benefits arrangement.

In Engineered Rebel, two characters start a friends-with-benefits relationship in Book Two that develops over the rest of the series.

Category Ten - Speculative fiction: A book with strong fantastical, supernatural, or futuristic elements, e.g., science fiction, fantasy, or paranormal fiction.

Well, this is all of my books, but the ones with Sapphic protagonists are Freya Snow (though not confirmed until Book Two), The Royal Cleaner, Aspects, Ember Academy for Young Witches, Ember Academy for Magical Beings, Engineered Rebel, and Castaway Heart (though the Sapphic protag isn’t a PoV character until Book Two).

(So, basically, every series of mine that isn’t Lady Ruth because Lady Ruth is ace/aro.)

Category Eleven - Ice queen character: The protagonist comes across as cold, aloof, and prickly (at least in the beginning of the book—the ice queen sometimes thaws a bit after falling in love).

The Royal Cleaner is the one for this category, though Seph (who isn’t a main character until Book Six) probably fits the archetype more than Caroline (who is there from Book One).

Category Twelve - Neurodiverse character: A book with a positive and realistic portrayal of a neurodiverse character, e.g., a protagonist who’s on the autism spectrum or has dyslexia, ADHD, dyspraxia, etc.

Well, once again, this is a good chunk of my series: Freya Snow, The Royal Cleaner, Aspects, and Ember Academy for Young Witches all have neurodivergent protags.

(And Lady Ruth, but again, not Sapphic, so it doesn’t count towards the reading challenge).

Category Nineteen - Historical fiction / historical romance: A novel that takes place at least 25 years in the past.

Okay, well, it’s just hitting me that Castaway Heart is set in the mid-nineties, so... it might count.

Category Twenty - Nerdy/geeky character: The main character qualifies as a nerd or a geek—meaning they are very enthusiastic about some kind of non-mainstream activity or specialized subject, e.g., a video games, science, technology, comic books, cosplay, collections.

Probably safe to put Freya Snow and Ember Academy for Young Witches under this as the main characters both spend most of their free time playing video games.

Category Twenty-Five - Your favorite author’s favorite book: A novel that is one of the favorite books of one of your favorite authors.

This isn’t really about my books, but just, if I am somehow your favourite author, your best bets for this category are anything by Arizona Tape, Romancing the Inventor by Gail Carriger, the Reluctant Necromancer series by Kaye Draper (if you like poly romances), or No Room at the Inn by Brooke Winters (if you like stuff on the steamier/kinkier side).

Category Twenty-Seven - Shy or socially awkward character: The protagonist is shy or uncomfortable/awkward in social situations.

This is tricky because so many of my characters are autistic, so it’s like, are they shy or autistic? But Freya Snow is probably the best bet here.

Category Thirty-Seven - Bisexual or pansexual character

Again, we’ve got quite a few here, so: Freya Snow, The Royal Cleaner, Aspects, Engineered Rebel, and Ember Academy for Magical Beings.

Category Forty-Three - Part of a series: A book that is part of a series. It doesn’t have to be book 1.

All of my books are series, so once again: Freya Snow, The Royal Cleaner, Aspects, Ember Academy for Young Witches, Ember Academy for Magical Beings, Engineered Rebel, and Castaway Heart.

Category Forty-Six - Set in the 20th century: A book that takes place 1901-2000.

Again, Castaway Heart is set in the 90s.

And last but not least, Category Fifty - Anthology, short story collection, novella: Read a book that is not a novel. It can be an anthology (collection of short story by different authors), a collection of short stories by one author, or a novella (17,500-40,000 words).

Castaway Heart is a trilogy of novellas.

You ask me this and you don’t specify which generation of the team. SMH. Lmao I know you meant the current main one but I feel the need to kinda explore a little with all three gens? Let’s see how this goes.

Star Fox 1st Generation: (of note, it’s interesting how all of them but Pigma had established families)

James McCloud - Smoker, suave, not as energetic as his wigmate, Peppy. And yet, he had enough in him to keep following his friend around. But honestly, James interested were more quiet and work oriented. A workaholic. Mind always on the team and the responsibilities he took on. Almost a complete perfectionist with a calming nature. His hobbies outside of work were few, and most were made with spending time with Peppy, Beltino, Pigma, the Greys and their families. Forming a taste for alcoholic beverages with Peppy, and appreciating the retro military look of space ships with Pigma, and the techno babbles of Beltino. Honestly, it still surprises him that he was able to find a wonderful wife in the end considering how work oriented he was, and focused. Vixy was possibly the only thing that kept him focused outside of work the most until she passed away. Then it was just Fox. And their times together were mostly focused on military history, documentaries, a continuous path of learning and studying. It was fulfilling and relaxing for James.

Peppy Hare - A much younger Peppy would be a spry little thing. More in shape, physically stronger and beaming to high heavens. And of course, a young husband and father like James. For his free time, besides catching up with the Toads and the Greys, Peppy would usually just spend time with Vivian and little Lucy. Before them, he was mostly into bar hopping with James around Corneria’s capital. Dancing with the single ladies and flirting. He was much better at it than James, honestly. He’s also a really good dancer. But once he tied the knot with Vivian and had Lucy, his world became just the two of them outside of work. He’d take them to picnics and spoil both with flowers and stories and nothing but his time to give to them. He’d even read his newspaper out loud so Lucy would know what the subjects were. She loved the voices he’d make. His family was everything…

Pigma Dengar - First time I’m thinking about this fool before he went to the dark side. And honestly, I can easily see him being more relaxed on his own. In the hangar after a hard day’s work upgrading Arwings with Beltino’s help. A good pack of cigarettes, a deck of cards, a handful of dice or maybe online gaming to keep his mind off things. Hell, I still see him being the kind of guy that would sit down with the kids and show them how to gamble honestly. Fox, Lucy, Slippy and Bill… And both Bill and Lucy remember the nasty little betting tricks too. Pigma was very much into gambling and taking bets on his off time too. He would get a lot of money, lose a lot of it, but in the early stages, it calmed him. Working on older models of ships helped him too. It’s rather unfortunate that this is where Lucy got some of her fascination for old model space ships, because of the magazines and books Pigma would let her look at. Modding was a big part of his younger life and he enjoyed that before joining the team. It… went away when things got worse.

Beltino Toad - I headcanon that, even if Beltino wasn’t part of the team, he was still a very important external force that helped out a lot. Especially with Pigma. So I will count him into my headcanon piece. He’s into making little machine toys. Like making little machine creatures and devices. To him, it keeps his mind sharp and there is always a new project on his table to go home to that isn’t an all consuming one. In fact, it’s one he could share with Slippy when he was old enough to walk. It helped with the two of them bonding and getting into other geeky stuff. Hell, Beltino was the type of father that would get into anything Slippy wanted to get into, so after that, he was a goner. Trading card games to video games, even modding them on the computer and making his own became his hobby as much as Slippy’s. In a way, spending time with his family was his way to relax.

Star Fox 2nd Generation:

Fox McCloud - I see Fox as being rather similar to his father in many ways. At first, he didn’t have as many hobbies that were formed on his own. Most of them were things he got into with his friends, Slippy, Bill and Lucy. With Slippy, he actually tried watching some of the cartoons but instead he was into more live action fighters (similar to Power Rangers). And with Lucy, he got into model kits of space ships. He has a few still. Whereas with Bill, he got into sports like baseball and handball. Hell, all four of them were into playing against each other in any game. But once his father died, Fox became more sullen and quiet. His interests were more work focused with the occasional gaming with Slippy. His shell started to break after the war however. So gaming is something he’s into now, as well as reckless space racing which, much to Peppy’s dismay, is something he got into with Falco. And meditation. That he learned with Krystal.

Falco Lombardi - This bird has no chill. Joking, he does. Falco’s free time is dictated by what he feels like doing. Besides trying to not be the worst gamer in the team–and that doesn’t exactly relax him at all but he keeps doing it. But what he does enjoy is watching cartoons with Slippy. Funny enough, they both have an unofficial established bond over ‘anime’ series such as Dino Ball Z and Sailor Papetoon. Something about the sailors legs, man… Ahem. But out of everything, Falco is into anything that will give him a sudden rush. Flying for any reason, races, pushing his own limits in the cockpit. And outside of his Arwing, well… Falco is reckless due to him wanting that rush continuously. From bar fights to even amusement park rides. Not the best of hobbies, to want to feel the danger behind his actions, but it’s something he became addicted to in a way. Staying cooped up somewhere will only make him more aggressive due to ‘my thoughts won’t stop, I need to drown them’ so he needs to keep moving.

Peppy Hare - In comparison to his younger self, a much older Peppy is much more sullen. Quiet, always looking after the younger team. His free time is usually dictated by what he needs to show them–trying to find the patience to guide them when anything sparks off. But when things are quiet, he finds himself mostly contacting old friends such as Beltino and Pepper, especially after Vivian passed away. Sometimes he’d contact Lucy, ask her how the cadets are doing, how she is doing. However such things aren’t as often as him sitting down with either Fox or Falco to chat with them. And even then, strangely, he seems to bond a little more with Falco at times, taking the time to pry open the avian. Why? Just a hunch. They have quite a bit in common without either of them knowing. He’s also very much fond of tea. Don’t bitch at him about his leaf water, leave him be!!

Slippy Toad - Listen here. Slippy is a bucket of hobbies. When he’s not working on machinery, making new inventions for his team, guess what he’s doing? This guy is making games on his computer for fun, testing them with Falco on the side (because he knows the difficulty curve Falco secretly needs to get shit done in a game, and if Falco is able to complete a task, the games is way too easy). When not making or playing games, he is having forum/server discussions with some of his online friends about cartoons and shows he’s into. He will actually share this with Falco a lot if it’s something the avian is into as well. He will also get into online trading card games and goes into bidding wars over certain real cards that are mega vintage. He also has a toy figure collection he keeps around in his dorm on the Great Fox (most of them are at home with his dad though). He’s also into music. All of the music that slaps in the Great Fox? That’s all Slippy. Bless him. Lastly, one more thing. He owns a ukelele. He knows how to play it. That is actually the mostly relaxing thing he can do for himself when he does feel absolutely anxious. Just sit somewhere quiet, away from everyone and string away.

Krystal - She’s a bit more simple in comparison. Used to living on her own in the wilderness, most of her free time consists of returning to Sauria to help restore the planet as much as she can. Empathy work is also something she truly enjoys doing when the recipient permits her to do so. So far, Fox and Slippy permitted her to work on some of their mental wounds. And yes, taught Fox how to meditate and relax in the silence as she found out Fox was never comfortable being alone. Out of the entire team, she’s possibly the one that’s most comfortable being herself.

Star Fox 3rd Generation:

Marcus McCloud - Unlike his father and his grandfather, Marcus is actually much more active when it comes to fun. A bit of a sports jock when in school and the Academy, he very much enjoys exercise to keep himself in shape and to keep his mind off things that can get under his skin. He enjoys gaming as well, but nothing compares to Skipper and Abby. Still better than Falco though, lmao.

Abigail Hare - Possibly the edgiest out of the team. She’s into reading books because of her mother, Lucy, and most of them are dark and spooky. Why? No dad, it’s not a phase. She also enjoys cartoons and is into retro space ships like Lucy (and got to drag her father into it as well). Now, the one thing her and her little brother, Valentino Hare, share in hobbies is that they both are actual super into healthy foods. This is mostly due to the shared rabbit disease passed down by mothers in Vivian’s bloodline. After Lucy passed away, Falco helped his kids to get into a much better diet and it became a shared thing between all three.

Skipper Toad - The oldest of the Toad siblings. He had to fight his way to stay relevant and boy, he’s merciless when it comes to his energy. Non stop, naturally caffeinated young man. From video games to schematics for lunch, to learning how to hack into different systems and databases to get information in a more proactive manner, he’s pretty much into many things that keeps him busy all the time.

Falco Lombardi - Like Peppy, he’s much older now, mellowed out, widower and a father of two. Abigail is his oldest, Valentino is his youngest (and that one stays on Corneria under the watchful eye of General Peppy). Ever since Lucy passed on, he’s been much more attached to his kids than ever, constantly checking on Valentino while with the team, and making sure the new team is able to stand on it’s own two feet. He finds it amusing how he’s the ‘gramps’ now, even though he still gets guidance from Peppy along the way. Sometimes Fox as well, but most of their conversations are just casual updates on how the new generation is doing. Honestly, he’s still kind of reckless, mostly to keep Marcus on his toes and to teach Abigail how to fly much better than what the Academy taught her. Honestly, the new team itself is his free time. He’d trade his place in there for nothing in the universe.

My Favorite Underrated Films (Part Six)

Marie Antoinette (2006):

Directed by Sofia Coppola. In a comedic yet beautiful re-telling of France’s infamous queen, Marie Antoinette is only a child when she and her equally young husband, Louis XVI, are crowned the King and Queen of France and demanded by their families to produce an heir to secured the throne. Isolated within the rivalry, gossip, and scandal of her newfound royalty, Marie Antoinette indulges in expensive and lavish parties, shopping sprees, and love affairs before her pampered lifestyle eventually leads to her tragic downfall. With luxurious set decoration and production design that are aesthetically pleasing of the palace and gardens of Versailles and a sweet, stylish wardrobe created to look like cakes and candies, it won the Oscar for Best Costume Design.

Boy and the World (2015):

Directed by Alê Abreu. One of the best animated films in history, Boy and the World is an unique Brazilian silent film that follows the adventures of a little boy named Cuca, who lives in a village with his father and mother. When his father decides to make the difficult decision to leave his family in hopes of finding work in the city, Cuca follows, determined to find him and reunite his family. As he travels through the city, he witnesses the life of field and factory workers, in constant fear and struggle of losing their jobs to machines replacing them to meet high consumerism at cheap costs, as well as the voice of the people fighting against poverty, wildlife destruction, and a greedy government. Full of heart and wonder, uplifting music and glowing colors that weave together a tapestry of Cuca’s life, it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Picture.

Ready Player One (2018):

Directed by Steven Spielberg. Based on the novel by Ernest Cline. In the dystopian year 2045, the world’s most valuable economic resource is the OASIS, a virtual reality universe where the limits are your own imagination. When the game’s creator James Halliday dies, he leaves behind a contest, where three keys are hidden in the game that will unlock an Easter egg. The first player to find all three keys and unlock the Easter egg will inherited half a trillion dollars and control of the entire OASIS. Wade Watts, better known by his avatar Parzival, enlists the help of his geeky 80’s and 90’s pop culture loving friends Art3mis, Aech, Daito, and Sho to find the clues, beat the challenges, and win the three keys before IOI, an evil corporation determined on capitalizing the OASIS, wins the Easter egg. Full of dozens of actual amazing Easter eggs from classic movies and video games and spectacular special effects that earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects and brought to life some of the best reality bending, adrenaline fueled action scenes and characters, Spielberg claimed that it was his third hardest film to direct, Jaws being the first and Saving Private Ryan being the second.

phoenix  jasper  dresden  was  born  the  youngest  of  seven  children  ,  in  a  home  with  little  to  no  stability  .  parents  who  were  fueled  by  their  children’s  failures  ,  a  temporary  relief  from  their  own  .  all  of  the  dresden  children  were  clever  and  they  knew  how  to  survive  within  the  conditions  they  were  granted  ,  but  only  one  found  a  true  and  healthy  path  to  follow  .  at  a  young  age  ,  phoenix  was  fascinated  by  computers  ,  especially  in  a  time  when  they  were  rapidly  developing  into  the  complex  systems  they  are  today  .  but  ,  as  a  dresden  kid  ,  having  a  simple  fascination  wasn’t  enough  .  they  had  to  make  use  of  their  skills  to  put  food  on  the  table  and  keep  the  roof  over  their  heads  ,  especially  during  the  chilling  winter  season  .  when  he  reached  high  school  ,  he  began  hacking  into  the  school  systems  to  change  students  grades  on  assignments  ,  tests  ,  or  even  final  marks  for  a  large  fee  .  he  also  did  minor  things  like  changing  an  absence  on  a  given  day  .  as  long  as  there  was  money  on  the  other  end  of  the  exchange  ,  he  took  to  it  .  in  his  free  time  ,  he  worked  on  computers  ,  building  and  repairing  ,  and  often  times  hacking  into  places  he  was  not  supposed  to  .  his  excellent  test  scores  in  high  school  and  for  college  entrances  ,  as  well  as  an  internship  ,  led  him  to  the  gallagher  institute  after  his  first  year  of  college  .  

the  troubled  past  he  experienced  still  sticks  with  him  to  this  day  ,  an  innate  distrust  and  standoffish  bearings  around  new  people  he  encounters  .  when  pushed  ,  he  shows  immense  indignation  and  aggression  ,  and  often  experiences  violent  outbursts  when  he  cannot  contain  those  emotions  for  long  (  although  this  is  most  often  when  he’s  alone  ,  mirrors  and  walls  as  his  victims  )  .  aside  from  this  ,  he’s  generally  pretty  geeky  and  gets  excited  about  computers  ,  video  games  ,  movies  and  books  #nerd  ?  he  has  a  big  heart  even  if  it  takes  a  while  to  fully  show  it  ,  and  always  works  to  put  a  smile  on  other  peoples  faces  !  slightly  a  very  chaotic  mess  .

Kaede’s twin: Akamatsu Shikimi Shikimi goes to Hope’s Peak Academy as a Reserve Course student. More easygoing but just as firm and assertive as her sister. Despite being mistaken as Kaede frequently in public, she doesn’t despise her twin, even going as far as pretending to her so Kaede can take a break from the limelight. Can play the piano (as well as guitar and violin) but only at a beginner level.

Rantaro’s 2/12 sisters: Amami Youko (2nd child), Amami Misaki (1st child, 3rd partner) Youko is Rantaro’s only full sibling. She attend’s Hope’s Pass High School, Rantaro’s old high school prior to being scouted. More mature than her older bro; has a no-nonsense attitude and quite studious. Easily annoyed by Rantaro’s childish antics but worries about him a lot whenever he travels. Misaki looks up to Rantaro a lot and strongly considers him a role model. She tags along with him frequently, except during his travels and is up to date with his vlogs. She is currently in 4th grade.

Shuichi’s Uncle: Saihara Yoshio Yoshio is the younger brother of Shuichi’s father. He takes in Shuichi after his brother and his wife move overseas, leaving their son to his care. He is a private investigator of a small detective firm, and takes Shuichi as his assistant. He lets Shuichi read confidential case files and would indulge him with a meal of donuts and hot chocolate on some afternoons.

Kaito’s grandparents: Momota Shou, Momota Asuka Shou and Asuka are the parents of Kaito’s father. Kaito was left to their care when his parents died in a tragic car accident. They have a tree house in their backyard where Kaito usually played as a child and Shou would often take Kaito to an open field to stargaze at night. They were quite traditional in their beliefs, and Kaito unconsciously absorbed some of their patriarchal views.

Maki’s favorite (in the orphanage): Shimizu Reika Reika is timid and shy, and mostly didn’t play with the other kids in the orphanage. She would often trail Maki whenever she had errands, and liked clinging to her. She aspires to be a “responsible big sister” like Maki to the other kids, doing her best to conquer her social anxieties. Maki initially disliked Reika’s clinginess, but eventually develops a soft spot for her (since she was mostly well-behaved anyway).

Korekiyo’s older sister: Shinguji Miyadera Miyadera is frail and sickly. Fearful of her short lifespan, she spoils her younger brother to no end. She would frequently visit Hope’s Peak to bring him food, random knick knacks or relics she manages to get a hold of. She would often message him to ask about his well-being, which sometimes irritate Kiyo but he lets his sister be. The siblings care for each other greatly (but not to the point that it becomes incestuous).

Kokichi’s organization D.I.C.E: names confidential A group of pranksters led by Kokichi. After being alienated from his family, he forms this ragtag group of outcasts to commit trivial crimes such as harmless pranks, vandalism and petty theft. They are basically a family unit to him.

Tenko’s Aikido master: Maeda Hikaru After the death of Tenko’s mother (at the hands of own father), Tenko was adopted by Hikaru, who is a good friend of her mother’s. Hikaru owns a dojo and trains Tenko with aikido. They invent a variation of aikido that they subsequently dubbed “Neo Aikido.” Hikaru has spent most of her life in a loveless rut, and she channels her bitterness with preaching to Tenko her biased views on men. Coupled with Tenko’s bad experience with her father, she develops a close-minded negative perception of men.

Kirumi’s mother: Tojo Kazumi Kazumi is a single mother, and doesn’t actually know who Kirumi’s father is. She had been completely drunk one night at a college party, and was too inebriated to notice she’d been having sex with a man. Her girlfriend subsequently left her while her family disowned her when she decided to keep the baby. She worked hard to be able to provide for Kirumi, taking up small part-time jobs apart from a day job during her early-twenties to her late-twenties. This inspired Kirumi to take a part time job when she was old enough. Currently, she works in a bookstore.

Angie’s late grandfather: Yonaga Arell Arell took care of Angie when her parents left the island to find jobs overseas and have not returned ever since. He teaches Angie obscure traditions of their island and the religion of Atua. An artist himself, he teaches Angie how to do visual art and sculpture, even teaching her how to apply incantations to her works of art. His eccentric way of speaking was picked up by Angie. Arell contracts a deadly disease when Angie was 9 years old, and unfortunately dies after 2 years.

Tsumugi’s little brother: Shirogane Takumi Despite sharing a lot of interests with her sister (video games and anime), Takumi teases his older sister a lot. He would also often bother Tsumugi when she is sewing a costume. Their parents are often too busy at work, and with his sister’s shut-in personality, Takumi feels lonely. He secretly admires his sister for her geeky attitude and talent for making beautiful cosplays. Tsumugi finds him annoying, but nevertheless pampers him when she has time. She would also try to dress him up, even in girl’s clothings and he doesn’t mind.

Himiko’s mother: Yumeno Chiyoko Chiyoko used to be a Magician’s assistant. Now, she works as a stage director while her husband works as a stuntman. She is very outgoing and bubbly. She would always recount how her day went during dinnertime with her family. During weekends, she likes taking Himiko out for a day at the park, or watch movies. Himiko is very close with her mother as she often brings her up in conversations, although she dreads being affectionate with her in public.

Keebo’s father: Iidabashi Manabu Prof. Iidabashi is a talented robotics engineer of Future Foundation. He fathered Keebo with one of his former subordinates, who left the organization after leaving him Keebo upon his birth. Not wanting to be an absentee father since his job eats up a lot of time, Manabu homeschools Keebo until he was enrolled to Hope’s Peak, bringing him along whenever he reported to his office. He is quite overprotective of his son and is very quick to defend him.

Miu’s estranged (real) father: Keane Bellerose Keane was a French tourist visiting Japan that had a brief affair with Miu’s mother. He lost contact with the mother after leaving Japan, and never knew he fathered a child. Being an illegitimate child, Miu’s stepfather mostly neglects her while her mother is mostly away from home. Keane eventually learns about his daughter and attempts to reconnect with her.

Ryoma’s family cat: Sunny A turkish calico, named after the same breed in the game Neko Atsume. Along with Ryoma, they are the only survivors of the massacre that claimed the lives of Ryoma’s parents, two siblings and an aunt.

Backstory/Background:

Raven is born one half of a pair of twins to his mother, an author, and his father, a businessman based in Japan. Because of his fathers work at this time their father was hardly around so Raven’s mother would often raise the children alone. That was while they were living in Canada. As a child Raven would often wander around the area around his family’s home. This would lead to him eventually wandering far too closely to a pond near the family home and falling in, almost drowning. Following this incident and surviving Raven would soon after become quite sick and take some time to recover from this all together. He would suffer hearing loss because of this happening, making things more difficult for him overall.

Raven and his twin sister would soon start to go to a boarding school as toddlers for a while. Though this doesn’t last very long before their father decides to officially move the family out to Japan as he has found greater success in business there. Some time after arriving the twins would be sent to an academy and be taught to speak Japanese. This would help along with attending a school with both foreign and native students. Over his time there Raven would start to get into more and more geeky interests, especially in manga and video games. Though he would not have too many friends at this time.

Growing into his teenage years nothing all too exciting happens initially as Raven and the rest of his family lead a relatively calm and normal life at this time in their lives. That was until the night a fire broke out mysteriously and destroyed the house and killed both his parents and sister, and ended up maiming and burning the teenager who barely managed to survive the incident. Because of this event Raven, while still in ICU at the hospital is approached by a Reaper, who is able to contact Raven as Raven has brushed so close to death that his ‘sight’ has changed. Allowing him to see spirits and other such beings.

Raven accepts the offer and goes to make a near full recovery, with lingering asthma as the most significant thing to happen because of the fire. Orphaned now and with nowhere really to go Raven, now a recruitment for Reapers is invited to a Reaper school where he can finish out his normal schooling and take the Reaper courses with others who have been in a similar situation and given similar offers as he has been given. Raven graduates from the school with exceptional grades. 

As an adult Raven manages an average life still, when he is not Reaping. Raven takes on a job at a local Japanese Model Magazine that is one of the most, if not the most popular in the country. He becomes an article writer for it. As well he has also inherited his parents own wealth and partial ownership of the rights to his fathers company, and his mothers revenue for her stories. Though Raven refused to actually use the money from them as he desires mainly to use his own money to get himself ahead. As well as enjoys the simple work of writing articles for a magazine. As well, Raven has sold a few books and manga of his own, which has gotten him quite a bit of his own notoriety and fame with the people of Japan.

Almost making him as popular as some of the models that work with the magazine. He is also friends with many of the models and often pressured by fans and his friends alike to take part in more photos, not exactly as a model. Though Raven has got issues with that as he has kept most of his scars from the fire hidden and thinks that the scar over his eye would ruin any photo op.
